Dalai Lama in Protector Setrap’s Chapel in Gaden!

Every Monastery has their specially appointed Dharma protector in all Tibetan Monastic institutions
For Example:
Gaden Shartse Monastery – Protector Setrap
Gaden Jangtze Monastery – Pelden Hlamo
Sera Mey Monastery – Protector Thao
Sera Jey Monastery – Thatring Yangsang (Hayagriva)
Drepung Gomang Monastery – Six Armed Mahakala
Drepung Loseling Monastery – Four Faced Mahakala
The monks of each Monastery will propitiate the Dharma protectors of their monastery usually once a month as a group and request the protection, blessings and assistance for the growth of dharma and well-being of the sangha.
The picture is of His Holiness Dalai Lama visiting the Protector Setrap’s Chapel in Gaden Shartse Monastery, South India recently. He is consecrating the chapel with prayers. How beautiful.
Since I am from Gaden Shartse Monastery, the protector of Kechara is Setrap also.

This is a powerful picture of Geshe Tsultrim Gyeltsen, Kensur Kyabje Lati Rinpoche and the current incarnation of Trijang Rinpoche meeting together in the year 2000 when Trijang Rinpoche was 18. All three lamas are Dorje Shugden practitioners. In fact Geshe Tsultrim Gyeltsen was the one that first encouraged my practice of Dorje Shugden when I was 16 years old when I joined his beautiful Thubten Dhargye Ling centre in Los Angeles. I lived with Geshe Tsultrim Gyeltsen for 8 years before proceeding to Gaden Monastery in South India. Later Kyabje Zong Rinpoche came to our Los Angeles centre and granted sogtae (permission ceremony) to practice Dorje Shugden for life as requested by Geshe Tsultrim Gyeltsen. Geshe Tsultrim Gyeltsen had tremendous faith in Trijang Rinpoche.
Kyabje Lati Rinpoche was innovative, dedicated and very much focused on bringing dharma to many. He had tremendous faith in Dorje Shugden as I had the honour to meet him many times. He would seek advice from Dorje Shugden many times via the oracle of Gaden Monastery. Geshe Tsultrim Gyeltsen and Kensur Kyabje Lati Rinpoche have since passed away while the current Trijang Rinpoche is a perfect lineage holder and practitioner of Dharma while he keeps Dorje Shugden as his personal protector as he has done so for many lifetimes.
This is a powerful and beautiful picture of three great lamas of Buddha’s lineage and also of Gaden Monastery. ~Tsem Rinpoche

Thank you Rinpoche for the picture and the information on the different Dharma Protector for each of the monasteries respectively. This picture itself worth more than a thousand words. With H.H. Dalai Lama presence in the Protector Setrap’s chapel in Gaden Shartse Monastery, not only it helps to negate the negative comments of our Dharma Protector but it also serves to increase one’s faith in it. May many more beings will generate tremendous faith in this Dharma Protector practice.

This is truly a very powerful picture, Lord Setrap has always been playing a very important role in my life. I was very lucky to have born in a family where we were nurtured into Dharma since very long time ago, even my grandmother knows about Lord Setrap’s, she would always chants the mantra whenever she’s free. And because I used to stay with her so I grew up with a lot of mantras in my mind, which I consider a good thing. I’m thankful that I was able to live with her although the condition at that time wasn’t really good, but she did what she could and gave us the best! I still miss her until now, I believe that Lord Setrap has guided her to take a good rebirth.
This is beautiful picture because it shows the Dalai Lama about to engage in an offering to the Dharma Protector Setrap. This reflects the great respect the Dalai Lama has for these great enlightened Dharma Protectors for continually upholding the Dharma, protect and provide for the great monastic institutions such as Gaden. We may be unsure of whether Setrap exists or not or whether he would help us or not But for the monastic community, they have no doubts and they rely themselves wholeheartedly to Setrap, whom they consider as part of the Buddha jewel of the 3 jewels of refuge. If the almighty Setrap is good enough to protect the Sangha of Gaden, then he is good enough for any of us.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us this blog. We really need protector practice because all of us has our inner obstacle and outer obstacle when we want to practice dharma. We are glad our Kechara house has our in house protector Lord Setrap that help us to over come all our obstacles.
A while ago, someone asked Rinpoche why did Rinpoche gave his students and Kechara Setrap’s practise. To summarised it simply, according to Rinpoche, because Setrap is Gaden Shartse Monastery’s protector and if it is good for the 600 years old Gaden, it is good for his students and Kechara. Very logical to say the least.
The Gelugpas emphasized a lot on lineage and authenticity of all the practise and dharma that are being preached. Therefore there must always be a reliable source that will eventually trace back to Buddha Shakyamuni himself. Gaden is founded by Je Rinpoche Lama Tsongkhpa in 15th century and he is said to be the 2nd buddha of our era who continues to preserve Buddha Shakyamuni’s dharma for us to enjoy in kaliyuga. The protectors in Gaden were assigned since Je Rinpoche’s time to protect the dharma and practitioners for more than 600 years. Since Rinpoche comes from Shartse, so his centre Kechara is affiliated with Shartse. It is also logical that the protector practise for Kechara is Setrap.
Setrap’s practice has a reliable source and it’s practise is mainly to help practitioners to clear inner and outer obstacles so that they can focus more on practising the dharma. Having His Holiness to visit his chapel in Gaden is an obvious and inevitable proof that Setrap practice is authentic and sincere practitioners will sure see positive results if they practise it well.

It truly is such a beautiful photo, its so nice to see H.H.Dalai Lama consecrating the chapel. I grew up with Setrap in my house with the blessings from Rnpoche. Rinpoche had always given me tsatsa’s and pendants of Setrap, teaching me Setrap would protect me from harm and bad dreams. Thank you Rinpoche for bringing us closer to the Dharma.
In today’s environments with so many distractions, such as wrong views, lack of faith, anger and laziness for most lay practioners like us, creating a connection with the enlightened Dharma protector such as Lord Setrap Chen will be of great help in fulfiling our dharmic wishes. Lord Setrap’s protective energy will help us in subduing our afflictive emotions, clears our minds of doubts, renews our energy and fill us with faith in our Lama and practice! It is said that our spiritual protector Lord Setrap is one of the most outstanding of powerful Dharmapalas. It is vital that this most powerful, most needed and wonderful ageless practice is available for Today’s needs.I

I was among one of the fortunate ones who visited Gaden Shartse monastery where we witnessed the offerings of jewels from Tsem Rinpoche and Kecharians being offered onto the statue of Dharmapala Setrap. The monks said to us that they usually do not adorn the statue upon request by people but because we are Tsem Rinpoche’s students, they made an exception. How kind of them.
Thank you Rinpoche for bringing Lord Setrap as our Protector in Dharma journey. I feel I am truly fortunate to have recited Setrap mantra and Serkym offering to clear obstacles when doing Dharma work, and I will continue to keep Lord Setrap as my Protector.

In Kechara, we have the Setrap Puja everyone monday night at 8pm in English and Tuesdays for the Chinese puja. In Kechara itself we can propitiate to the sacred Protector Setrap himself and seek His help and protection for our daily life and spiritual practice. We are grateful to His Eminence Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, our Guru for bringing and bestowing this sacred practice direct from Gaden Shartse Monastery.

I heard there is also always a protector the monasteries share. For whole Ganden this is Chogyal, whole Sera has Jamsing and whole Drepung has Nechung.

When we are doing Dharma, the Dharma Protector will help us by clearing our obstacles in order to continue our Dharma work without much interferences.. =)
