Work and Play Become One……..

(By Tsem Rinpoche)

Whether we are working in a place for the next 1 year, 10 years, 100 years isn’t the issue. The issue is while we are working there, we treat everyone, and our work as if we are going to be there for a hundred years. Why? Because wherever we work, we are working with other PEOPLE. People have feelings, impressions, can be happy and can be hurt. Hence when we are working there, we should never think, these people don’t matter, I am just here for a short time so it doesn’t matter what they think. But we should think, while I am here I AM GOING TO MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY. I am going to be kind to everyone. I am going to make everyone like me and I am going to like them. Then wherever we go, we create respect, love, care and good feelings from others towards ourselves. That is so important as it will affect other areas of our life.

We may plan this or that for the next 30 years but we can die tonight. Everyone in between is insignificant or just a stepping-stone to get where I want would be a bad attitude to have. Because whether we live 30 years more or 30 hours more, it is WHAT we create in our environment which is of the ultimate importance. Do we create distrust, laziness, irresponsibility and dishonour? Or the environment we create is trust, responsibility, kindness and integrity? Whether we live long or not is out of our hands, but what we do during that time is in our hands. Life is much more than getting ahead at the expense of others. Getting ahead in life is fine, creating a happy, trusting, caring environment along the way IS MOST IMPORTANT.

If we use people and a place as a stepping stone..we lose everyone’s respect and we lose respect for ourselves. We may get the money and material items, but when we lose respect for ourselves, then we become bitter and unhappy. Even angersome eventually. That would not be a good result for all the hard work. Hard work must result in happiness of the mind not just material gains. HAPPINESS FOR OTHERS AND OURSELVES IS THE ULTIMATE RESULT OF WORK AND CAREER WE SHOULD SEEK. A happiness that brings zero harm to others.

  1. Doing work in such a way that others don’t need to correct us, or push us to meet the deadline is such a wonderful way to give back to others in the office. Free love to them.
  2. Helping another member of our team to finish their work, or cover for them in emergencies without agenda is a nice spiritual way to live.
  3. Never backbite about other people in our team. We have issues, talk it out in a pleasant manner with the attitude to solve the problem but not to win. Winning is not everything. Sometimes you can win, but lose everything in the process. Talk to iron things out is the best motivation. Never create schism or insinuate. Make peace and harmony.
  4. Be honest. Come when you are supposed to and leave when things are done… Never leave your work for others to cover for you. You send a message to people that you haven’t any integrity. Integrity is the basis of trust. When you create trust in people’s mind, you create a harmonious attitude and environment. Everyone enjoys harmony.
  5. Buy lunch, a birthday card, a snack, a drink and stuffed toy for others in your team from time to time. Soup when their sick. Be caring with each other. Don’t think of the office as just a place to get as much freebies and money as you can. But a place to share, give and return kindness too. When? Whenever necessary.
  6. We all have personal problems that we bring to work sometimes and we can’t help it because it disturbs us. So if we have reacted negatively to someone because of it, apologise from the heart when you have calmed down. Bringing our problems to work is an inevitable, but apologising from the heart is wonderful. Apologies do not make you lose face in the long run. In fact, it helps you to gain face.
  7. Sure your quitting time may be for example 6pm, but if there’s work, finish it and support your team. If you run out, after a while people feel you are not with them and then eventually they will not be with you. Teamwork is not about the work, it is about how you make others feel when you finish the work and not leave it to them. It’s called caring and compassion.

Work and play are not different when your work makes a huge difference in other people’s lives. The concept of work and play being different is applicable sometimes but not in all circumstances. There are times when we go to ‘play’ after work AND it becomes work. For examples being stuck in traffic, your friends cancel appointments, overcrowded loud shopping malls, relationships that drag us down, being with people who are totally into themselves, getting to a party that is totally not happening or meeting people who are not for real. These are some scenarios that play time becomes worse than ‘work’ time.

The purpose of work is to support ourselves so we can do activities that make us happy. But if our work is such a nature that it brings others happiness, then we are priviledged to work in such a job and it is not really a job. Hence we should not treat it as work or job in the traditional sense of the word. Because helping others bring happiness to ourselves so that is not work. Hence timing is not the issue anymore. It’s about giving it your all, and getting a lot back as a result.

How can you make a cut off time when you are happy and others are happy because of you? Think deeply about that. We are being paid to bring others happiness. How can that be work? Bringing happiness to others will bring happiness to ourselves. Of course having said that, we would like to meet with friends, go karaoke, walk in the park, pujas, retreats, a drive, shopping after ‘work’ sometimes and THAT IS FINE. The point here is that if you have the good affinity to work in a organisation/job that benefits others, don’t treat it as work. Don’t treat it as a job. It is much much much more than a career. It is better than any career you can ever have. Careers give us money and a sense of purpose hoping that will bring happiness. But money and false self purpose doesn’t ever bring happiness. Check it out. A job that brings purpose and satisfaction is something that enriches the lives of others SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM. Having a job like that is not a job. We should never view it as so. We should think our job is actually happy time or enjoyable time.
  8. Are we lucky enough to work with people that give to us, share, generous, supportive, loving, kind, and always there to talk to us? Then why is being with these people considered being at work? It looks like enjoyment to me. Sometimes people at ‘work’ turn out to be better than people we have at home, our partners, even long time friends. Why do we label people at work, just work mates? They can turn out to be super-duper, loyal, loving friends. Even better than people we have labelled our partner or friends. Many instances of that.

We have to change our perspective. Sometimes we bring all our problems from our friends, relationships and home to work. We make our work mates listen to us, console us, be there for us, but we give nothing back. When it’s 6pm, it’s quitting time and we are gone!! People outside of work bring us problems, and people at work solve it for us. It sounds like the people at work ARE OUR REAL FRIENDS sometimes. Check it out. Sometimes we feel happier with the people at work than outside of work. True? It can be true. We have to ask ourselves, why don’t we do more for our work mates? Why do we do more for people outside of work? Because one is labelled for fun and the other is for work? That is wrong perception if we examine it closely. What do we do for others at work? How much do we share or give or do we just take. People at work give us the livelihood to spend it on ourselves and friends. And if your workmates are wonderful group of people on top of livelihood, they also give you friendship, love, understanding, an ear at times, advice, support and care. Don’t we have a ethical and humanistic attitude to return that? Of course we do.
  9. Just because we didn’t go to school with them when younger, or have intimate relations with people at work does not mean they are not worth our time, energy, evenings and weekends. Remember, when we see it as ‘sacrifice’ of our evenings or weekends with these people at the office is when we label it work. But how come when we go with friends/partners, it is not a sacrifice of our free time? Because our view is wrong. Whether the people that support us and care for us are at work or outside work is NOT THE CRITERIA. The criteria is that these people HELP ME..and it just so happens they are from work. So when I hang out with these people in the office or outside beyond my ‘working hours’, it is not work, but it is with friends and enjoyable… THAT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER.

If we want to get ahead, we have make our priorities more important. If we have a passion for painting, but we don’t set time aside for it, then how to be recognised for it or accomplish it. If we are into relationships that get us nowhere, movies, food, gossip, dancing, or very protective of our attachments and not willing to let go of anything to accomplish a bigger goal, then a bigger goal cannot be achieved. Being in some sort of job or work and not going all the way will lead to disappointment. We have to go all the way in whatever job we are in. We have to think that whatever we do, must be the best we have done.
  10. It ‘s important to not always expect support in the office. The office may have some project or whatever going on, we must make sure we attend. It gives the whole office a feeling of solidarity, support and loyalty. Whether at home or at the job, we should go all the way. Don’t treat others according to our own labels. We should treat them for who they are without being judgemental but with discernment. Judging and discerning seems similar but differentiated by motivation.

If work and free time is made into such a distinction like the ex-berlin wall, then you will not treat the people at work as they deserve especially if they are good people. This is not always the case, but it can be. You treat the people at work as work and subtly you send a message that they are not worth you maybe. Just a thought… In general look carefully and see who is with you…

Work and workmates should not always be viewed as having a cutting off time. When the whistle blows..bye bye! Remember, see where your friends really are. Who is there for you and give you words of wisdom. Remember their kindness whether it is at work or home.

Thank you for the thoughtful view points of the idea to work. There are some people looking for a way to escape from work. When we discover our purposes, we will change our attitudes toward work and start living to inspire not retire. If our career can make others happy it is a great result for all of us.

This post has the richest and fullest lives attempt to achieve an inner balance between work and play lifestyle..

HAPPINESS FOR OTHERS AND OURSELVES IS THE ULTIMATE RESULT OF WORK AND CAREER WE SHOULD SEEK…….worthy words to ponder. Happiness is when what we think, what we say, and what we do are in harmony. Whoever is happy will make others happy. Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort. Happiness comes when our work and words are of benefits to others , it becomes one. I see no difference, and for me there is no difference as the one that feels happy I will be happy too. When we work without agenda for others, happiness comes naturally then. All happiness comes from desire for others to be happy. Coming into dharma is the best choice. Learning, practicing dharma and putting it into action makes a happy ending.
Thank you Rinpoche for the profound teachings.

All of us have different form of expectation in every situation we are in, be it in a family, work place, dharma center and etc. But it is important to realise that no matter where we are, we should be responsible of our work and not pass the undone job to others. We should not put differences on others and prioritise only to certain people or team. Therefore it’s important to set the right motivation and think that every job we do should bring happiness to others. And because of that we should do it properly. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this teaching.

I agree with what Rinpoche says. We cannot “use” our colleagues as a stepping stone or treat our colleagues like tools. This is what Dharma is about “Happiness for others and ourselves is the ultimate result of work and career we should seek . From my personal point of view, i feel that when we want to work harmoniously in a team must start from ourself but not just hope others be good with us then only we do so. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the teaching and guiding us. ??

This is what Dharma is about “Happiness for others and ourselves is the ultimate result of work and career we should seek.” Recalling back before I join into Dharma activities, my life was terrible. Working in secular world make me feel insecurity on work, relationships and it affected my health as well. Though, you have kind intention to re-correct the situation, but the people seem to ignore and even backfired you. No matter how hard working you are, people keep on getting a piece of you.

Somehow, I’m grateful now that I’m contributing myself more into Dharma, to change and transform myself to be better. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the teaching and guiding us. ???

“HAPPINESS FOR OTHERS AND OURSELVES IS THE ULTIMATE RESULT OF WORK AND CAREER WE SHOULD SEEK.”-a great statement. Everyone want to live happy and see others happy too. If our career can make ourselves happy and others happy it is a great result for all of us. I have learned that the article provides a lot of ways to be happy and make others happy at work. Thanks for the sharing.

  8. Edward Ooi on Jun 12, 2015 at 4:50 pm

I agree with what Rinpoche has written. We cannot “use” our colleagues as a stepping stone or treat our colleagues like tools, in fact, we should not anyone like that because that is taking advantage on people, selfish and cold-blooded. I totally believe that if we keep on treating people like that, no one will come and help us willingly. Nobody would want to help someone who is as troublesome as how it has been described by me earlier, unless the person is super compassionate.

My father always tell me to never treat anything as work, you have to do it like you mean it or don’t do it at all. Now that I think of it, it makes a lot of sense. If you enjoy doing something, it will never feel like work. There is also another saying that goes like this: Choose A Job You Love, And You Will Never Have To Work A Day In Your Life. Which I think it’s quite accurate. Don’t you think so?

The lessons that I have learnt from this article are to never treat anything like work or you will never enjoy doing it AND never use and treat someone like a stepping stone and tools. If we do that we might be successful but we will never earn people’s respect and we will not be happy at work.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article, It is fantastic. What this helps me is to change my thinking that ‘work’ and ‘play’ can do at the same time as long as the job is benefiting others then we should enjoy it. Besides this, I understand is that we should finish our job before leaving, instead of pushing the job to the colleagues, the things we do not like sure the others do not like too. Our perception for our job is the main point to cause us if we are happy during working hour, if we don’t change our mind and like to differentiate ‘job’ and ‘work’, no matter how many jobs we change, we are not going to enjoy it. But the point for me to think about is whether my job benefits others? But this would not be an excuse for me to be good to my colleagues.

  10. Wan Wai Meng on Jan 9, 2015 at 3:55 am

Many of Rinpoche’s teachings, can be applied into various situations which makes it not rigid at all in its implementations. So whichever place brings us benefit in comparison to other places we should value that place above other places even it is called ‘work’ and cherish the people in that environment.

Whether we work, play, have a relationship, an amazing career, hobby it is all directed towards the pursuit of happiness, in fact it can be said that all actions we do it to bring about some sort or form of happiness.. contentment or otherwise . This is what separates people who are spiritual and those who are worldly, spiritual people will tend to look at long term happiness, worldly more to instant and short term happiness. Spirituality looks at the happiness and well being of all beings, examples of great personages are people like Gandhi and the Buddha, they benefitted millions from their actions and views, it has been said many times that buddhas worked for the happiness of beings, and worldly or selfish beings worked for their own welfare. So look where the buddha got to and where the worldly beings got to?

Thanks Rinpoche for the profound sharing, the whole article 100% touched our daily life style.

Like Rinpoche always say: ” One Cannot But Many Can”; team work is the best solution for every work but how to be harmoniously work in team is really not a easy work.

From my personal point of view, i feel that when we want to work harmoniously in a team must start from ourself but not just hope others be good with us then only we do so. Hence as we started to be good with others sure we are creating the positive Karma to meet better person surrounding us.

Thanks Rinpoche once again to introduce Lama Tsongkhapa and Lord Setrap practice that help us to be a better person toward others…

  12. Vinnie Tan on Oct 8, 2014 at 1:43 am

This is definitely an insightful post. There is just so much knowledge that we can pick up from reading this article.

Personally I agree with everything that is written on this post 100%. I too believe it is how we deem “work” that would affect our emotions as well as the people around us. If we enjoy ourselves, play not only our own parts but to help the rest out when help is needed as well it would create harmony and happiness with the people that we are working with. Through this not only can we help the organisation that we are working for to even higher levels, but it would also improve ourselves as a whole.

Simple reason to this, when we enjoy what we are doing, we would enjoy the environment that we are at. Then, we would influence the people around us to be happier. Hence, it is an overall improvement to your work place. Through that we can also boost our work productivity, then if our bosses are happy we can get more bonus. Hehe!

Truthfully, through showing care, love, and respect with colleagues I believe that it boost the good office relationship that one would have with their colleagues. Let’s think of it this way, we see and face our colleagues about 8-9 hours a day. Even more time then we spend with our spouse or family members (after taking away the sleeping time). Thus, our colleagues are like our family whereby we have to work in harmony. So what for create hatred in the workplace when we can share love and peace to make ourselves happier daily?

I believe that with this attitude that we carry, we would be much more happier in our workplace.

  13. Edwin Tan on Sep 30, 2014 at 4:52 am

This applies to our daily lives and not just work alone. The mentality and attitude we adopt how we live creates so much difference and atmosphere for our friends and family.

Thank you Rinpoche to remind us . One day 24hours , we are spend more than 8 hours on working time. Meet with working college more than our parent/partner . It is very important to change our view, treat them as a best friend , sharing the happiness and helping each other , don’t be self-fish , go to work place like back to our home sweet home and sure we will enjoy our work if we are practice like this .

This is a most valuable advice, for workers in the service industry like me. We helped each other to tackle difficult problems like closed friends. End results is every one is happy. (We are happy because the problem is solved; the Captain of the ship is happy because the communication equipment is repaired; the Bosses are happy because they would be paid.. HaHa)
Also I am grateful to have understanding and caring bosses.

Working in dharma with other dharma workers we do develop special relationships with others one that is based on working towards the same goal. So many times outside of dharma we are all actually wanting the same thing HAPPINESS. But when outside because we do not actually realise that if we work together perhaps we can get to HAPPINESS faster?

  20. Sharon Saw on Jul 4, 2012 at 2:51 am

I was told once that when you love your work, you have actually retired. Isn’t that what retirement is all about – finally getting to do what you really love and what you have been waiting for all your life slaving away at a menial job which in the end, only brings home a paycheck which you save up to spend when you retire. Doing Dharma work has been my ‘retirement’… i don’t feel that i ‘have’ to go to work… it’s just part of my life… there are challenges of course, like in everything else, but there are the successes also, like in everything else. But Dharma is so wonderfully different from any secular job… and all the above that Rinpoche has so kindly shared explains why.

  21. Karen C. on Jun 23, 2012 at 12:55 am

We are constantly reminded not to be selfish. The results of selfishness has made us not a nice person to work with or even not comfortable to get along with. The barrier that we put around ourselves to defend difficulties are so strong that we actually resist everything that is outside our comfort zone.

Without us realize, our motto in life seems to be: be selective, be lazy, be selfish… but we pray to Buddha and hope Buddha will help us ease our sufferings that actually are self created. I think the very basic level of being spiritual is really not how much you have prayed but be nice to people. Focus on others rather than focus on ourselves because by doing this we may achieve the state of selfless.

The time we spent in office with our colleagues is much longer than we have with our family. For many people, office is their second home and colleagues are just another family. As a family, we should love each other, care about each other, support and help each other. A happy working place is a place that we look forward to go to everyday. Happy workers will also increase productions. Will keep Rinpoche’s sharing in mind and to apply it in working environment. Thank you Rinpoche.

Rinpoche’s message on the importance of changes in work attitude to bring greater productivity, joy n harmony in work, to make all situations, every minute of life meaningful n rewarding by changing our view, remarkably echoed n reiterated by one of his close students, is a sage, a Buddha’s advice to everyone of us ,be we an employer or an employee. The reasons are: firstly, in this degenerate age ,the chasing of wealth, prestige or power equate with happiness n security in this life, has brought about much discontentment, even depression; secondly, many of our young people who are working now have not developed the proper work attitude to bring them joy; thirdly, employers when equipped with Rinpoche’s valuable teaching, find themselves facing less stress n strain in their relationship with their employees n all will be gamed for the win, win situation.

Thank you Rinpoche for being successful in transforming the minds of many of your students. Those who have been transformed by you are there ever ready to serve the needy. I really admire in them the great courage they have in serving others, even forgetting time n place. It is you Rinpoche, Who have shown them the sky is the limit.

With folded hands I bow to you.

The topic of “Work and Play Becoming One” is one which is dear to me.

Rinpoche’s words are so true. There’s, as always, a lot of wisdom and insight in what He writes. Rinpoche’s teachings are many-faceted and have profound effects on my think pattern. By coincidence or by design, Rinpoche’s teachings rock!

While reading the blog, I started thinking about my now-over corporate life but then I had another revelation. I’d like to share my thoughts here.

When I was in the corporate world, because there were many departments, I could only have a direct impact on my own team.

I’ve always striven to strike a balance between corporate discipline and empowerment so as to encourage trust and respect among my team members. Discipline requires trust and respect for the company’s guidelines while empowerment shows trust and respect to a team member’s person (skills, knowledge, commitment) and gives the team member the freedom to grow. Both are necessary if we want to groom a strong team.

At the same time, I’ve always insisted that whatever we did, we must have fun with it. Fun doesn’t mean not being serious about what we do. Fun is about passion, it’s about enjoying what we do and enjoying who we do it with AND enjoying the ultimate result and being able to celebrate together as a team. We worked hard, we played hard, we were one, we were family.

    Or so I thought.

I had hoped to encourage a mentality and “work/lifestyle” that transcends work and private time. However, looking back, it wasn’t always sustainable. While I was the manager (8 years with Daimler, 5 years with Bosch), my teams were stable with hardly any staff turnover, and my teams enjoyed the best Employee Satisfaction results. We were always the envy of the rest of the company because we had so much fun on top of being successful. But when I left the companies both times, the bubbles we existed in were eventually burst by the inevitable new setup. It’s not (just) the fault of the new manager, my old team members let go of what they held dear and so they became like the rest of the company, back to square one as if I had never existed.

I’ve learned that while I already instinctively practiced a lot of what Rinpoche wrote about, it will only work if ALL team members believed, breathed and lived as one unit and do the same things with the same conviction. It cannot be dependent only on any individual personalities. The whole team must have the same belief, conviction, commitment, passion AND courage to dare to challenge what the rest of the world thinks to be right but is actually the wrong view. IF the team believes as one unit that they are facing the wrong view.

So what does this teach me? That it’s the same for Rinpoche our Guru, Kechara the organisation and us the students.

Are we really in tune with what Rinpoche is teaching us or are we only nodding our heads because we are mesmirized by Rinpoche?

Are we so attached to Rinpoche that if He is no longer with us, we will be lost and all our learnings disappear or will we carry on with our learning by practicing what He taught us and keep up with the work we set out to do under His leadership?

Rinpoche is conferring to us the teachings of Lord Tsongkhapa with Himself being our ultimate model. Which means if we truly embrace Rinpoche’s teachings, even if He is absent or not reachable, we must be able to go on.

Just like my ex-teams should have upheld the fun and respectful environment among themselves even after I left the company. But then again, I’m no Guru. I haven’t got the skillful means.

I still have a lot to learn, there’s so much I don’t know. But what I do know is that my job as a student is to help spread Rinpoche’s teachings of love and compassion to as many people as possible, as far as possible, so that in time to come, the teachings will survive time and live on beyond us. Do I have the necessary means to do that? OF COURSE! But right now, my reach and support are limited. So, I have to work harder to make sure that I DO have the necessary means to achieve even more but NEVER forgetting what my ultimate goal is. I shouldn’t need Rinpoche to remind me although I might need it now and then, for I’m still learning after all.

I wish with the deepest sincerity that Team Kechara embraces our Guru’s gift – the Kechara Spirit – so that we can all be one with our Guru. Only then can the Kechara Spirit – and Lord Tsongkhapa as well as Rinpoche’s teachings – be truly immortal.

I apologise if my comments drifted off the mark and are inconsistent with the blog topic but this was such a powerful revelation for me, I had to share it.

    Thank You, Rinpoche!

    Sean

Dear Rinpoche, thank you for this post…as always it offers a great source of learning opportunity as well as prompting to create action to improve.

We spend 8 hours of our waking day at work and, probably, another 2 hours on the road to and from work. Thus, it can be said that we dedicate an average of 10 hours (about 60%) of our waking hour to work. This makes it extremely important that we are living well in our work.

It is said that rebirth as a human is the most precious. Being so precious, it is unwise and unacceptable is we waste our precious human life by engaging in work that we cannot grow through the practice of virtue. This post reminds I to make the brave decision to choose work that I believe in and can contribute to. It is really true that the friends we get to know through work can become closer than purely for-fun friends due to the commonality in interest, goal etc.

I envy and rejoice for those who are blessed to work for the dharma within the vision of Rinpoche at Kechara. It is truly an honor to work for a cause and vision that can benefit so many in the long term. Not many people have the opportunity to do so. Thus, it is most important for those who have this good fortune to truly reap its benefit by being fully committed, dedicated and professional.

May more people be blessed to have the opportunity to dedicate their time, skills and talents to serve their Guru and Dharma.

That is such a profound teaching by Rinpoche. I remember an accounting term that i learnt in my student days , and that is Human Asset Accounting. Which basically means that one of the most important asset in any company is the staff. Yes of course the stock and service of the company are also important but without people in the company, nothing works! Rinpoche’s teaching is very wise, it is so important that we must give happiness to our coworkers and in return we feel happy that everyone is happy. And what a great environment we are all working in!

Kechara House should not be construed as a work-place, but as a spiritual centre for dharma sharing, caring, nuturing and serving to benefit people in Dharma. People who are serving at a dharma centre definitely have a better understanding of each other than our own people at home, or at our work-place, because of the same dharma tasks we are performing, the same type of spiritual energy we are receiving and the same type of dharma teachings we are learning and practising. Performing dharma tasks and helping out at dharma centres give one endless opportunities to practise and learn from amazing teachers and fellow practioners, as well as the everyday buddhas and dieties we served and prayed to. But most important of all, is one’s formal practice of acceptance and vulnerability of “each other’s behaviours” of our own inner group while at work and play! These are said to be the true dharmic practices where we can learn in action and practice at the dharma centre where one serves. This is also what Dharma can truly offer us to learn how to breathe while under water, to prepare oneself to serve in the outside world to benefit others.

I feel lucky to work in Kechara and do what I love to do here, which is writing/translating. I feel lucky as well to have kind, sincere, caring ‘colleagues’ aka friends in my office. I am lucky enough to understand and totally believe in what Rinpoche said here, as I am going through some of the circumstances that Rinpoche mentioned above.

Job never gives a purpose to our life! But the heart and mind to benefit others/bring others happiness, give us the purpose to live our life. Therefore, by knowing this, we don’t take our job as solely as a job. We ‘work’ 5-6days a week, are we going to call this is our life? What Im trying to say is, we spend most of the time to ‘work’, if we see it as a job, then what is the purpose of your life? If we see it not just a job, then it will be more meaningful, whether we are in working hour or not, we see everyone as our friends, not colleagues or whatsoever. Then from this, we gain true friendship, we gain respect and trust and love from others and we give the same thing to them. We can turn a job/work, into something very meaningful by switching our mind and heart.

Thank you Rinpoche for giving us the oppurtunity to work in Dharma, for giving me such a wonderful life. And I must thank Rinpoche for reminding me, how lucky I am and what I should do more to my fellow ‘colleagues’ aka Dharma friends.

I am definitely not a good workmate to work with. In my company I wanted everything to be perfect. Every single piece of product must be properly done and no mistake and must be arranged accordingly. i changed my display almost every day. Products must be nicely presented and have a sense of precious when customer hold it. When they put it on, they will feel the sense of exclusive and precious of it. As I stressed many times to all my staffs that this is called professional. it’s part of the marketing skill.

People who worked for me think I am crazy! They think that I am giving them a difficult time. They often feel tired of me and frustrated. If i know how to skillfully teach them and spend more time take care or talking to them and their family. Most importantly

  33. Amos Leong on Jun 19, 2012 at 2:31 am

Team work or partnerships are all about “give and take” just a slightest cauculation on who does what and how much defeats the whole purpose of team work or partnerships. But none of us are perfect and brought all our crap from our childhood, hurts, unforgiveness to trigger even the slightest things till today, those are the things we need to address during our quiet time, lest you bring it to the outside world and make it less conducive and yucky, not to the extend of climbing on top off each other either, what’s our motivation?this question should be the root question in EVERYTHING we do and say, once done and said cannot be taken back. Thank you TTR.

When we were young, our schools are the second “home” and our classmates were our ” family” since we spent more time with them than our real family! And we met our best friend during the school time and we played together after school and during the holidays. If you study hard and well, and you treat your classmate well, all the teachers and classmates like you and you enjoy going to school everyday. School was ” Work” when we were young and work is just like “School” when we grow old.

I like No.8 point which Rinpoche said “Sometimes people at ‘work’ turn out to be better than people we have at home, our partners, even long time friends. Why do we label people at work, just work mates? They can turn out to be super-duper, loyal, loving friends. ” I met my best friend Betty 7 years ago when we both worked at GE. After working together for a project, we started to have lunch and hung out after work. I am the single child and Betty treated me like her younger sister and I remembered once I was having a serious disagreement with my parents, she came all the way to my home to talk my parents out… We both changed job years later but our friendship stays. Now we are Dharma sisters and she supports a lot for Kechara Tea House and KSK. I am so happy that we have the merits to learn Dharma together. 7 years later we are still best friends and without the WORK, we will never meet each other.

And it’s so important to enjoy the work even there are people we don’t like or there are things we don’t really want to do. Hey there are family members we don’t like either! Work IS life! If work is something we ” wait for it to end at 18:00″ everyday, we are wasting our life and we are ” suffering ” from the time we walk into the office to the time we leave- 8 hours at least! It happened to me before.

This is a fantastic teaching and I wish I could read it earlier –I would have done my JOB differently. It’s a must read for everyone who WORKS. I will share with my friends/ ex colleagues and it will be our topic for our Study Group this coming Sunday! 🙂 Thank you Rinpoche! This teaching will change many people and it will make them happier in the work. Nothing changes but everything changes! Work is still the same work but if we change the way of how we treat the work and people around, we will be happier.

    Love
    Christine

I remembered about fifteen years ago, when i first joined this company called NC. It was a medium size company whereby we have about 20 staffs crammed in one bungalow in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. It was so crammed and I was practically sitting side by side with another colleague of mind just like the classroom. I remembered one our my colleague then said me on my first day that this is a very good company to work with. Everyone in this company are very close to each other. It’s just like a ‘family’.I just briefly nodded my head when he told me over the lunch i had the first time as an NC staff. His words didn’t really got me thinking deeper but i considered it is good sign.

Time past by pretty quickly as we all were extremely busy with work. I started to realized that i was slowly been accepted or included in their outings, i realized then most of my colleague then had somehow managed to developed a very strong bond and trust towards each other. We do not just worked together but even for leisure and if someone needed help from them in his/ her project we will definitely lend in a hand to help and whenever we do go out, we’ll be together most of the time.

Until today, we’ll make it a point to have gathering a least once a year due to our hectic schedule. Working in that company was one of our happiest moment in our life so far, so we all claimed.

  36. Girlie Ooi on Jun 18, 2012 at 8:22 pm

We spend an average of 8 hours daily in a working environment (our office) in the company of colleagues. In fact, at times we spend more time in their company than we do of our family members and friends. In this aspect, should we not treat them like “family”?

  37. Pastor Susan on Jun 18, 2012 at 8:13 pm

There are many key points here that Rinpoche is teaching us. However, I wish to highlight one particular key point:

For most, work and personal life is separated..it is just to get a pay cheque that’s required to sustain us. Nothing wrong with that, but it is not uncommon for people to feel dissatisfied, if it becomes the ONLY reason why they keep that job.

For a few fortunate ones, work is their life and there is no distinction between their work and personal life. With my limited observation, it’s clear to me that those who are successful don’t have a distinction between their work and life… and if you were to ask them why this is so, they will be able to tell you that they find satisfaction and meaning in the work they do.

What’s more important than to use our lives for something we find meaningful,…or beneficial. Why should something that is beneficial that we do becomes a hobby and not something we dedicate our time to? What would you like to do with your life?

  38. Wei Theng on Jun 18, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for the teaching. This is not just applicable for normal secular work to create a happy environment, but it is also what it should be when we are doing Dharma work.
It is we ourselves that is responsible to create an environment that is happy, positive, good and we like to be in.
When now I started working for Dharma, I am so grateful. Just like what Rinpoche mentioned, “Because helping others brings happiness to ourselves, so that is not work.” Working in eDiv, is a retreat and practice for me. Just as i have make my previous secular work environment a good one to be, I should even do more on this to make eDiv and Kechara a great place to be!

Thank you Rinpoche for writing such a wonderful article. Love this post because it is very true how people working attitude in nowadays. Last time i used to hear people said – “WHY DO YOU WORK SO HARD FOR YOUR COMPANY, THE COMPANY IS NOT BELONGS TO YOU… In fact, some of them never do well in their job still always complaint this and that OR sometimes beings lazy and left work for others to complete for them.

I believe all these are come from our mind on how to value on one thing. We shouldn’t catagories thing like this. If we do, we are being selectiveness for ourself and create the inharmony in the working environment. Because automatically we treat people in the office not our real friend so we never open up ourself to others. As the results, we being diplomatic, protective, defensive, selfish – let people do more than us so we can have easy way out.

No matter where we are, if we take the ownership, be responsible and working with 100%, wherever or whoever we work with sure will get the good results. Because good people create a good environment, and a good environment bring a positive energy and definitely the positive energy will bring us a peaceful mind. I really believe this.

I feel this article is very good for us to put in our office or in any offices. It will be good for the staff to read it.

  41. Sam on Jun 18, 2012 at 5:19 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for the article. I believe everyone of us spend at least 8 hours which is one third of their time daily at work. I always find that workplace is an interesting place because i deal with people coming from different background, ages, experiences and various walk of lifes. When we first choose to join a company, of course the main factor is to find a job that we are passionate and we can grow from a job to career and climb up the career path along the way. In order to contribute and add value to the company, we need to work with people to complete certain given tasks. Yes, work as a team because we work in an organization. But sad to say that what i experienced so far is backstabbed within department, ‘tai chi-ing’ masters and empty promises which lead to very unhealthy working environment. People go to work putting up masks on their faces and faking to achieve their aims be it certain position, more money, fame or to win. But we always forget the very basic of working is to earn a living. Rinpoche is correct that “Getting ahead in life is fine, creating a happy, trusting, caring environment along the way IS MOST IMPORTANT”

I think it is important to create a harmony environment regardless at work, at home or other places. We must always have a correct mindset and not to have differentiation to put tag on each and everyone. To tag this person is my friend….this person is my Dharma brother…this person is my colleague. We should treat everyone the same and set our motivation to benefit others. The basic is at least not to harm if we are not able to help. And to spread happiness among ourselves. Believing karma means believing in cause and effect. Once the happy cause is created, it will be an iceball keep rolling to be bigger and bigger. It is easy, we just need to start from ourselves. Once there is no barrier in our own mindset, every moment and everyone we meet is precious and we can have fun at anytime. Always expect the unexpected and life will be wonderful.

Thank you Rinpoche for the teaching.
    Please take care

A most timely reminder to me. I am in preparation mode to withdraw myself from work more to contribute to Kechara. In doing so, I find that I am getting more impatient with whatever situation that comes up as I view it as taking my time away from my Kechara activities. With Rinpoche’s teaching, I should really reflect on my actions which will affect all and always remember to never be selective. I still haven’t found the balance of work and volunteering so decided one has to give.

What a meaningful guide towards making our jobs that we spend most of our lives into a positive, encouraging and nurturing environment. I must admit that for some people and certain job environments will take a bit of extra effort to bring these points into being. I really like the Japanese model of keeping staff and employees well taken cared of so they remain loyal and have bigger job satisfaction.

All of us here in Kechara including myself is very fortunate to be within this nurturing environment that has so much to offer us. We have job satisfaction, greater cause than just a pay check and also the prospect of being involved in the spiritual organisation that is growing rapidly. I hope many who are working in Kechara would realize the potential in this organisation and see to it that they are involved in this massive expansion, growth and the benefit it brings to so many people.

  44. nicholas on Jun 18, 2012 at 1:32 pm

If we work for ourselves we are the only factor for happiness but if our work bring happiness to others and eventually to us too. How can we stop bringing happiness to others and it doesn’t sound work at all yet it’s a privilege for me to be able to contribute for their needs.

It is true that we use to think of our childhood friend is the real friend because we spend so much time together knowing each other for so long but at the same time as when we started to work out there the time we spend with colleagues is much longer. Especially now with Kechara, we nurture and treat each other so closely. This is what we should value and appreciate because these are the people that all the time with us through thin and thick. We work and play together!

Of course in order to appreciate them we should not bring our problem to them instead we should always offer to help them.

I love this post so much and it’s a great benefit to so many people working out there.

    Thank you Rinpoche

How true! If our work is making a difference is others lives, whether the people we are with is from “work”, Dharma or anywhere doesn’t matter. What matters is we make a difference together; to each other and to others outside. We make each other happy with our good attitude, honesty, integrity and love and compassion. We lead by example whether we are the “leader” or not. Others will follow the good and some also will follow our bad examples. Why not always set a good example always?

But I’m so glad that my job is being an entertainer, and could be of bringing a short moment of happiness to all my client, so basically my job is at play and I could play to be my job. I’m glad that I could have a job like that now. Used to be so stressful at work but after reading the post, it doesn’t matter whether we are working or we thought that we are enjoying in a stressful way. Thank you so much for the posting

  48. Henry ooi on Jun 18, 2012 at 11:41 am

This is so true. We spend much time at work yet we are lazy and selfish and do not treat our colleagues as friends. Instead we use them to cover for our laziness, lies and selfishness. And when our colleagues point out our mistakes and give us advice we ignore them and their kind intention. We are creatures of laziness and selfishness. This also happens at home with our family.

  49. Jeffrey Yee on Jun 18, 2012 at 11:24 am

I believe most of us spend more than half of our days at work and we actually see our colleagues more than any of our friends and family. That being said, I see the importance of having a good relationship at our workplace.

I understand how the office environment can be political and dramatic sometimes but I realize it doesn’t stop us from being the first to treat others well sincerely. We really have nothing to lose besides disappointments – which actually stems from expectations we set. It all begins with us and how we can influence others to do the same without expecting.

The main essence that I received from this teaching is about sincerity and not being selective with the people around us. The work place is just one, but I believe this teaching can be applied anywhere we are in order to create harmony with everyone we know.

I’m really glad to work in Kechara where we treat everyone as Dharma brothers and sisters. But I must constantly remind myself that it doesn’t only apply in the centre, but also to others around us who are not in it. It really is one of the recipe to harmony.

    Thank you Rinpoche.

The people we work with does matter, in fact, each of us should work on building a strong work relationship so that it will pave the way for a harmonious work environment. If we give each of our colleagues care, respect, love and understanding, we can work better together. Sometimes communicating effectively may be a problem especially when others are busy, occasional get-together will strengthen our relationship. When we are wrong, we admit, apologize and move on. To me, it helps to think that any work that is not done timely will affect other people, that way we take responsibility to finish a job on time and satisfactorily. All of us are not perfect, therefore, acceptance of other people’s flaws is important, though it is not always easy especially when it affects our work.
In KMP, we complement each other in our roles & responsibilities. I may not be able to do what my other colleague is doing, but in her/his absence, we help to the best of our ability. For the KMPL who worked very hard, I will tell myself that they are doing such good work to assist Rinpoche and for the Dharma, the least I could do is to do whatever possible to facilitate their work. Li Kim has been a gem in accepting our flaws and yet like a big sister, would honestly tell it to us with a dose of her ‘to die-for’ sense of humor! That helps to keep us grounded! Thanking you Rinpoche for giving us this opportunity to work and learn from each other.

  54. william on Jun 18, 2012 at 2:57 am

When we join a company, we have to treat it as our home and our colleagues as our family members. We spend more time at our work place as compared to time spent at our real homes. Therefore, we should work together as a team towards the company’s goals. When there is teamwork and the people are keeping a look out for each other, then it makes working there enjoyable. Isn’t this what we want, a place where we are happy and fulfilling our needs.

If we work for a company or NGO which contributes to people, then it is even better and more satisfying because the difference you made to a person will be food for your soul. Always do more than what you are expected to do.

What you want from your workplace is from what you want to create with them. It is all in your hands. Make your choice.

    • Li Kim on Jun 18, 2012 at 5:56 am

I first wrote my comment about two years ago… Now, two years later, I cannot tell you how true this is. especially this line :
“Sometimes people at ‘work’ turn out to be better than people we have at home, our partners, even long time friends. Why do we label people at work, just work mates? They can turn out to be super-duper, loyal, loving friends. Even better than people we have labelled our partner or friends.”

My team in KMP have become my closest friends. They know more about my life than many people outside of work. In fact when I am distressed I call on Sharon, Jamie and Susan like they are my nerve centre. At times, they know me better than I know myself. Judy and Deborah know how I am the minute I walk into the office. I have found really true and great friends here in my “workplace”.

I have my issues, I have my days…but they are all forgotten when I step into the office. I find tremendous joy being with my people in KMP. I love them dearly and deeply. And they know me inside out so I cannot even be a fake! It is just honesty which ties us all together.

      • Paris on Jun 18, 2012 at 6:44 pm

        LiKim, I love you too!
It’s pretty awesome to look back on this post 2 years later, and to see how far we’ve all come along as friends and family. The point that we spend more time with our workmates than anyone else in a day is especially true – so wouldn’t we want to make the most of it?

If we’re complaining about the people we work with, then we have a choice – we can continue being at loggerheads, or we can become their friends. So yes, it’s a choice. There are some people you see who excel wherever they are and make friends whatever situation they’re in; and there are some who fall out with colleagues no matter where they’re working. The constant is that one person; not the rest of the world.

If we say that the people we work with aren’t nice or easy to work with, then we also have to ask what we’re doing to contribute to that environment – do we make it worse? Or better?

        • Sharon Saw on Feb 4, 2013 at 12:58 am

“The purpose of work is to support ourselves so we can do activities that make us happy. But if our work is such a nature that it brings others happiness, then we are privileged to work in such a job and it is not really a job. Hence we should not treat it as work or job in the traditional sense of the word. Because helping others bring happiness to ourselves so that is not work. Hence timing is not the issue anymore. It’s about giving it your all, and getting a lot back as a result.”

The above paragraph makes a lot of sense because we are so used to corporate life that we tend to forget that dharma work is not a job but a privilege. Being in service to public is a privilege because we help alleviate people’s sufferings. This should not be restricted by time.

Thank you, Rinpoche for these words of wisdom. For there to be productivity at work, there must be proper communion between fellow colleagues. And each person must first and foremost complete his or her duties. No matter what is thrown before him, he must not be distracted. And this is very sacred and a secret to success. _/\_

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this, it’s really open my mind, like what exactly happen around us, the way to solve & think about and the thought of ‘lablelism’ of ourselves. That’s so TRUE.

I’m lucky person, my work or job always be my favourite ‘activity’. Especially in KIM now, our member like : Ms.Han, Jace, Chris, Lai and Veron..I always feel supportive, loving, kindness and sharing within each other in office. Yes, is not anymore about Job or careers, is more than that, esp is come with the meanings behind the work, it much more satisfied. Thank you my workmates and as my loving spiritual friends too, THANK YOU. You all really show a good examples for us by giving and sharing.

Nowadays, people spend more time on work, but can see the result when people just treat it as “JOB”, then what they get is complain, unhappy and work done without ‘soul’. They bring a lot of negativity back to home or people around. It’s just like a circle, keep turn around and back to the same point. And I do agree sometimes there is play times become worst then ‘work’ time.

Through this article, is remind me not to label the friends who’s caring and bring happiness to you by ‘outside friends’ or ‘work friends’ is no different between. What need to do is pay back them with sincerity, sharing, kindness, integrity and most important is done and finish our work well, don’t ever bother people caring you to cover our mistake. Don’t break our promise to them. I learn a lot between work and friends, THANK YOU Rinpoche!

I used to easily stressed and under pressured in corporate workplace.
Especially when I was overloaded with tasks with non stop OT….

After engaged in Dharma work, I do feel very fortunate to work in such a job and IT IS NOT REALLY A JOB.
Just like what Rinpoche mentioned in this post,
“Because helping others bring happiness to ourselves so that is not work.”
Since my goal is to benefit others, therefore In such working environment, I do not feel OVERTIME in work stressed me anymore, so timing not an issue to me too.

Within co workers in dharma place, there are differences compare to corporate sectors, everyone WORK AND PLAY TOGETHER, with common passion in benefiting others as the main purpose, what else to loose, only WIN WIN, we all WIN in our spiritual practice too.

Thank you Rinpoche for this in depth post.

Dear Tsem Rinpoche thank you for this teaching, it is so important for anyone who has to work with another person to absorb and apply this. When i was in the corporate sector a lot of us staff / kuli were quite bitter and unhappy working.. now i see it is because everyone was working for themselves and failed to look beyond the work and at the humans doing the work. also i felt quite perplexed why some of my workmates would say “i don’t mix my colleagues with my friends” or they somehow find that spending time with colleagues was “Sad” and “no life”. to me, going to work is just like going to school… our school mates were our friends, why distinguish between work mates and friends? why put work mates lower than “friends”? This is an absolute must read post for everyone.

Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing. it give me a refresh what attitude i should change toward my work and my colleague or team member.when i was 20′, if not happy with the work or environment, i will impulse and resign and never think of to change the attitude, most of the time, we will think of other people not nice to us, we never think that we may also have such attitude that make people not happy.everyone is equal and deserve self respect.i will keep in mind of Rinpoche’s teaching to avoid repeat the same mistake.

  62. Jace Chong on Jun 17, 2012 at 11:55 pm

Nowadays, people spend 70-80% time at works, it’s important to practice all these precious thought and actions in our life.

I read a book by Dalai Lama stating that there are 2 ways to make ourselves happy, one is to do everything that please ourselves, two is to make everybody around you happy. Both way lead to happiness, but quantity wise, the second way is more practical. Hence putting effort to make others happy is better than just focus on our own happiness as it drives us no where.

I am proud that now my “workmates” are caring and compassion, and we don’t treat our works as works, but something with great meaning behind. Beside works harmoniously, I think with respect to the leader and stay close as a team is also an efficient way to “work”, as together we get things done faster.

Without co-operating among workmates and with our leader, the leader will have more problems and troubles to solve. We shouldn’t leave our workmates or leader alone, we should always be there to back up.

If our leader fail, we fail. If our leader up, we up. So putting down self agenda and think for others will make the team stronger, will make our leader stronger with more confidence, hence it will push the team to grow.

As a working team, we should focus on the bigger picture with love and care among each other, fighting with each other for personal agenda has no point and it’s wasting time.

I especially like this “Whether we live long or not is out of our hands, but what we do during that time is in our hands.”

    Thank you Rinpoche! _/\_

This is an amazing post Rinpoche, Thank you so much for reminding. This post is totally related on me. This is what i have experienced after i have join Kechara. Once you love your job and love your colleagues and knowing your job is to benefits many. You will find the joy of working, even working at late hours or even weekend, you find it happy and contented. I totally agreed somehow colleague is better than your partner, friends or maybe family.
I love to hang out with my team and other department’s people alot. We work and play together, we laugh and cry together as well hehehe. Its alot to learn and compromise at work as everyone has their own problems and personality. But showing respect, love, kindness it will change the situation, and all of these has to start with ourselves. FIRST THING IS VERY IMPORTANT TO START THE DAY IS TO SMILE AND A MORNING GREET TO OUR COLLEAGUES.
Thank you Rinpoche for the post, i love love love this post very much, because i think this is how we create a harmony and happy working environment. After all we are a team, we have to see each other everyday and our working hour is so long hence we do not want to work in a negative energy where everyone is grumpy and angry.

Thank you Rinpoche with folded hands,
    Love, Helena

Thank You for the wise teaching Rinpoche,
What all Rinpoche say is very true and it happens every working place. I’m honored to “work” at a organisation and people around me in my office are just awesome! They are great people! Except myself…
As Rinpoche said,” see where your friends really are. Who is there for you and give you words of wisdom. Remember their kindness whether it is at work or home.” This, always, will be on my mind. Thank You again Rinpoche.

    仁波切所提到的都是我们在面对的,感谢仁波切教诲。

“Whether we live long or not is out of our hands, but what we do during that time is in our hands. Life is much more than getting ahead at the expense of others. Getting ahead in life is fine, creating a happy, trusting, caring environment along the way IS MOST IMPORTANT”~~

Dear Rinpoche ,thank you very much for your guidance on how to build a harmonious and conducive working environment. After years of working experience, good and bad.I have promise myself not to treat others the way I had been mistreated before and I would not ask someone else to do something that I would not do myself. We should treat all working mate as friends, even those working below us.After all they are an extension of us to assist us to complete a task which we are assign to fulfill. When we treat others well then the chances the others betraying us is less, at least there should be a minute element of respect left when misunderstanding occurs. As mentioned to build a caring working environment is important as everyone is ever willing to help out in time of need willingly without obligation like a family would. 69. MayOng on Jun 17, 2012 at 9:03 pm

Work in the secular world has expectations out of us. The company pays us to get the job done hopefully. But we usually bitch about the work, the bosses and colleagues. In the end, we find work unjoyful due to pushing responsibilities to others and we become unhappy ourselves.

In dharma work, it is still work but with dharma instilled in our minds for those who learned up dharma. Prayers also help. This type of work over time will become part of our practise of patience, perseverance, view things differently and bosses are not bosses but peers and mentors.

We are serving others in dharma and people who needs our help spiritually. Therefore sometime work time has no limitation. If we see others needing help, we should make time for them. Unlike secular work, we are paid overtime to get the job done. It is not the case with dharma. In dharma we get the satisfaction of seeing others happy by us helping them resolve their problems. This is not to say we do not have our own problems which we do but we kinda freeze them aside for awhile.

    • DR on Jun 18, 2012 at 12:19 pm

I agree with some of your opinions here. I look at it this way, whether we are doing our secular work or dharma work, the environment is the same. At both places, you will experience at one time or another co-workers who are lazy but cover to look good, those who stab you on your back, datelines to meet, targets to be achieved. It is the same everywhere. What makes dharma work different from secular work is the motivation and end result. One benefits a wider spectrum of people and the latter benefits probably just our immediate family members.

I have been asked before by many people what my hobbies are; the first time when I was asked this, i was dumbfounded. It dawned on me that my work, play, hobbies, family has all been integrated into one. There is no longer the distinction as my passion and mission lies in my dharma work.

Today is a Sunday and I was working in Haven. A friend contacted me and was horrified that i was working… he said that’s awful!! Don’t you get a day off? I was thinking actually the last day off I had, i spent it at home continuing my work. I actually didn’t even leave my house that whole day. Now i am working at Rinpoche’s private office, we do not have a scheduled day off though there are days when we do not have to come into the office which we call ‘laundry days’. Why? Because when we do dharma work, we never need to take a ‘break’ from Dharma. Dharma is within everything we do, as Dato Ruby rightly pointed out. If we call them ‘off’ days, we will subconsciously think that this is ‘work’ or a ‘chore’ as opposed to the days we do not have to ‘work’ and reinforce lifetimes of habituations of laziness and irresponsibility. While we do need days to handle our laundry, do errands etc – hence the laundry day. I thought that was incredibly skilful of RInpoche to reprogram our deluded minds!

  70. Victor Phang on Jun 17, 2012 at 8:59 pm

    Dear Rinpoche:

Thanks for the enlightening teaching. I think why people differentiate between workmate and friend is basically the “security” issue that we face in secular organization because they are incidents where a lot of time workmates betray, backbite and gossip about us in order to get “trust” from higher level of management which is very important for promotion and bonus. Don’t be surprise that some times the manager or boss purposely “place” this kind of people to “avoid” unity among workmates simply because they able to create a “power-balancing” environment where his/her own position could not easily be challenged, to avoid group resignation and to eliminate group demand issue within the organization. All these can be achieved by disuniting the people under him/her/organization. This is the reason why many companies do not want to activate their staff unions and nowadays they are very little number of influential staff unions exist in the market because most of companies argued that all the staff benefits are “protected” by government that is good enough. Therefore people who is working in a secular organization is becoming more and more insecure and calculative, not because they don’t love their workmates but the performance-based environment created by the organization/management is “forcing” and “training” them to be as selfish as possible which lead to disharmony within the group then many choose to go back at 6pm to relax and get a balance in life or even worse some don’t really “work” during working hours because they afraid of making mistake which could be the “evidence” for disciplinary action and demotion. All these phenomena contributed to disloyalty, irresponsibility, and zero belongingness; as the result today everyone is being measure by performance appraisal that directly affects their increment, reward and promotion.

So come back to the case of working in a Dharma center where the ultimate objective is totally opposite than a secular organization. Dharma center is talking about bringing happiness to others and ourselves whereas secular organization is talking about profit and only profit. What happens is this group of Dharma workers who mostly former employees in secular organizations may “accidently” carry their work method from previous workplace into a Dharma center then conflict arises. The question is do they ready to serve? The readiness mainly based on individual transformation from focusing on promotion and bonus to focusing on welfare and spirituality of other beings.

When the work objective successfully shifted and in line with the Dharma center’s objective then things could be much smoothen, workmates become buddies, high loyalty and responsibility and have sense of belongingness. However they are still some people may take the advantage of working in a Dharma center to be purposely underperform or wrongly-perform. Everyone knows Dharma center talks about compassion and love so if their performance is not up-to the requirement, they assume it is acceptable because other people will compassionately help them to complete it nicely, they won’t receive letter of warning, disciplinary action or face accusation in court. The worst they may get are transfer of department, ask to go for retreat or complete special assignment. Of course I’m not saying we should enforce the “fear” factor of a secular organization in a Dharma center then it would dismiss the whole purpose of having people to work for Dharma. I strongly believe transformation is still the key and only way to overcome “problematic” people in the Dharma center.

Thank you Rinpoche and take good care.
    With love,
    VP

We spend more of our waking hours with “colleagues” than with family members or friends. Hence, creating a harmonious and pleasant working environment is beneficial for our mind. When we get along and do our work well in the “work” place, it also creates conducive energy for everyone to “work” together as a strong team and brings faster and positive result for the company’s growth. People we know “out of work place” does not guarantee they make better “friends” than those from our office. So when we inculcate a co-operative, helpful, ethical, sincere attitude towards our workmates, gradually it will generate the same response from them. It is even more beneficial if we happen to have the merits to be working in an institution like our Kechara organisation that benefits others with no financial agenda instead of being in a company that is focused primarily on making profits.

  72. KYC on Jun 17, 2012 at 7:47 pm

This is very good advice for developing a good attitude at work and with our workmates. If we are selfish and let others do most of the work, it will result in a lot of unhappiness and disharmony at the workplace. When we are in the dharma, work is not work any more. When we are working for the happiness of others, it makes us happy. In the end, we are the ones who benefit. On the contrary, in the corporate world, bosses have to pay overtime to workers for them to stay longer than the stipulated work hours. Everything is about money.

Thanks Rinpoche for sharing with us how we should do for our-self and teamwork when completing a assignment. If we can make our assignment or work to be a part of a hobby and take our team mate as our old good friends then we will enjoy the environment and all the assignment or work will be done in a harmony and super fast way…

If we may let a unknown person to be our friend or a very close friend after some time then why we cant take our team mate become this? But if we can open our heart to receive their good qualities and they also open their heart to receive our good qualities then sure we will easily become a very good and close friend and done the assignment and work easily and smoothly in a harmony situation. But the key is We Must Start Open Our Heart To Receive Others Good Qualities First then only can hope others do so…

Hi Rinpoche! After reading this and reflecting on it I regretted much not doing a good job as a friend to my colleagues I met in my secular work. Now that I think about it I have been avoiding others and sending signals to them… I think because of bitterness in myself…I have used a lot ‘hardwork and helpfulness’ to create a positive image and at the sametime to cover my bitterness while it is still remains inside me. I think I have the wrong perspective of how other people should treat me while I don’t give the due return, approach them first and have genuine concern for other first by putting aside my bitterness. Kechara people here have been kind and friendly to me… I regretted I have used them in some ways.

  75. Wan Wai Meng on Sep 24, 2011 at 2:31 pm

Work gives us a lot of meaning especially work that involves in bring a sense of real happiness for others. Then that ‘work’ is not work. I suppose when we are anywhere ‘working’ that the work and the people there is not for us to use or to get something from. That we should think long term of how we can enhance our work and benefit others and ourselves in the long run.

  76. bengkooi on Sep 14, 2011 at 11:39 am

This should be a must read for everyone who has ever held down a job. If they did, the world would be a better place…Working in Dharma, it is much easier to implement Rinpoche’s advice. But in the secular world, where office politics are everywhere you look, it is easy to forget all about Dharma…. I guess if we were all to live, eat, breathe Dharma, we would have no distinction between our personal life and our work life. We would treat everyone, whether colleague, friend or stranger equally. It would not be about what you can do for me, but about what I can do for you. What a nice way to live.

Or even better (I got that from visiting the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland):
At the beginning of the day all the people from one departmant hold each other by the hand in a circle, close their eyes and say: “WE dedicate our important work…”
But now it’s enough for today. I would be SO happy if these my ideas were of any help for you. Good night.

  81. Knut Eggers on Sep 23, 2010 at 4:20 am

From now on I am going to dedicate my work to Lady Vadjra Yogini. Every time on my work, when I start a new task I say to myself from the deepest place in my heart (if possible without closing my eyes):”I dedicate this important work to the Lady Vadjra Yogini (and to the happiness of all sentient beings).
    So it shall be.

  82. Knut Eggers on Sep 23, 2010 at 4:03 am

This is wise… I think the Dalai Lama is an expert on this, as I remember some of his words saying that one can do (very) hard work and still be satisfied. I only miss one thing. I mean if you give this text to people at Ketchara house everyone will know, but I for myself find that in the working world, which is really sometimes a very strange mixture of karmic influences it is kind of impossible to really swim against the stream and make a change, if there isn’t at least ONE person whio committedly doing a medtation (I tended to do them in the rest room, I got the idea from Eileen Caddy, Founder of the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland) or to repeat mantras all day long during work, e.g. Medicinebuddha, Om Mani Padme hum or for example Om Bendsa Guru Pema Siddhi Hung. Meanwhile we are at a point where nobody cares anymore where I meditate… the only rule is that it doesn’t interrupt the working process. People have to be able to meditate AND do their work BEST as POSSIBLE at the same time. (This adds a little Zen taste to it, doesn’t it?). Love.

  83. Lim Han Nee on Aug 16, 2010 at 3:18 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for reminding us, yet again, that our suffering stems from wrong perceptions.Wrong perceptions derive from our mentally labelling everything, every environment and every person that we come across.
We label what is our sphere of comfort and fun, rest and relaxation and we label what is our sphere of work(which we equate with stress),strife and unhappiness. We label people as friends and loved ones on the one hand and strangers, nasty people and enemies on the other. We put the first into our sphere of comfort and joy and the second into our sphere of stress and pain.
We can only find true inner peace and lasting joy when we begin to dismantle all these labels and wrong projections and perceptions.

  84. Sandy Clarke on Aug 15, 2010 at 7:31 am

Tonight, a friend of mine – who plays in a band – said: “We played Belladrum (music festival) last week and even though I had to get up at 6am, I felt really good, even though that’s the time I usually get up for work and dread it!”

I think perhaps our workplace is a victim of our pre-set notions and as such, we suffer for it, as do our work colleagues as a result of our mind set.
If we work 8-10 hours per day, that’s roughly 50 hours per week that we spend with coleagues: they cannot fail to have an influence in our lives and certainly, we should do what we can to cultivate positive, lasting relationships with these people. That they are “work colleagues” should really make no difference. It’s just a label. Work colleagues are just like us. No doubt we feel we deserve respect and are worthy of the time of others’, so surely we should respect our work colleagues and be generous with our time?

    Kind regards,
    Sandy

We spend more time in the office than at home. So we should make our office environment and our work colleagues as pleasant as possible. I believe if we are happy we can work better and thats the truth. If we have any problems at home we should not bring them to the office. It will affect not only your work performance but also your relationship with your colleagues. We should put them aside and solve them later out of the office.Change your attitude and be happy. Working for dharma is the best one can get. Why? Below are some of the reasons I can think of, imagining if the dharma center is a company/corporation:-
    a) We are working for best CEO in the world – LORD BUDDHA.
Yes. If we work for dharma, our ultimate boss would be Lord Buddha. Don’t you think Lord Buddha is the most ideal boss? Don’t you think it is cool when somebody asked you “Hey, who are you working for?” “I am working for LORD BUDDHA”… hehe. Lord Buddha embodies all the qualities that inspire us to become like him. Buddha has laid the path showing us that it is not impossible for one to be liberated from samsara. The only obstacle that stands between the path to enlightenment and us is our own ignorant mind.
    b) The performance assessment of one’s dharma work – KARMA.
Don’t we agree that the most impartial, the most unbiased performance assessment one can ever get is the karma we collect from doing any type of work? In our society, most of the time we are unsatisfied with the performance assessment graded by our bosses – the normal bosses that are trapped in samsara like us, always thinking that either the bosses are bias, or we are being underappreciated by the company. But in terms of Karma, we are responsible for our own actions. We have no one to blame but ourselves because we are the ones who sew the seeds, either the good or the bad, and in time we would be rewarded accordingly. The best thing is the karma is impermanent. Karma is meant to show us what we have done wrong and thus we learn how to FIX our lives better, just like any other performance assessment methods available in the corporate world.
    c) Our Directors would be the compassionate ENLIGHTENED BEINGS who are free from sufferings, who have been liberated from samsara (e.g.Taras, Chenrezig / Avalokiteshvara, Mother Vajrayogini, Lord Tsongkhapa, Guru Rinpoche, etc). Don’t you think is super COOL to have these deities as our “Directors”. We would be dying to see and worship these “Directors” and we would do just ANYTHING to get their blessings.
    d) Our “Senior Managers” and “Managers” would be our LIVING BUDDHAS, e.g. H.H. The fourteenth Dalai Lama – “Senior Manager”, H.H. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche – “Manager”, etc. These high lams who are “old school” in practising dharma, who are well verse in liberating their minds to attain enlightenment, who despite having mastered their own death and rebirth, yet they vow to be reborn again and again in samsara with only one supreme objective – to show and guide all sentient beings to the path of enlightenment in any way possible. Don’t you think it is a blessing that Kechara House has a dedicated, compassionate “Manager” – H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, who has sacrificed his entire life for dharma, who has resided in Malaysia for the past 18 years, who has worked relentlessly in pursuit to teach, guide and support all of us all the way to the attainment of enlightenment?
    e) The “Assistant Managers” would be the ordained beings (i.e. monks and nuns), who have taken the vows and devoted their lives to the well being of all sentient beings.
    f) The “senior executives” would be the liasons, who work tirelessly and relentlessly in expanding the dharma center and carrying out any dharma works assigned by the “Manager”.
    g) The “executives” would be the members of the dharma center, who are fun, enthusiastic, and hardworking in helping the senior executives in any way possible to accomplish the “tasks” assisned by the “Manager”.
    h) The “part time staffs” would be the volunteers who, instead of indulging in all kinds of entertainment available during their free time, CHOOSE to help in doing dharma works.
i)The “shareholders”, “suppliers”, “customers” would be all beings that aren’t liberated from the ignorant mind that still reside in samsara, who are subjected to the sufferings of endless cyclic existence, like me .. hehe..
    – With all due respect, I have no intention to mock any deities or buddhas or high lamas or Rinpoches in the piece of write-ups below. Out of the blue these thoughts just pop up in my head and I think it is fun and I just thought of sharing it in this particular blog. If the write-ups are deemed to be not suitable for this blog, kindly please remove it. Sorry for any inconvenience caused –

What a stunning post, and I wish I had read this when I was in my previous job, which I used to dread and find meaningless. Actually, I met some fantastic people there who became my best friends in KL – I never thought of how I could take advantage of that time at “work” to nurture those friendships more but only ever thought of how much longer I had to go before 5pm when I would leave on the dot.
What Li Kim said is so true – that we probably spend more time in a week with our work mates than with our families, partners and social friends. So why don’t we try to value that time with them more? I’m extremely lucky to be able to work in KMP (as well as with the liaisons council and various other departments). There are times in Kechara we have 12 hour meetings, but every single person is happy to be there, throughout the 12 hours – because it’s really like being with family. We don’t think of it as work, but as something that we want to do, with people we cherish.
It’s funny how, because we are so close now, we feel sad if we don’t see each other for even a few days, if one of us travels abroad for example. It is extremely comforting and beautiful to know that these people are there with you during work, outside of work – any time, anywhere. You go through real shitty times together, but you also celebrate the amazing, successful, fun times – and with that, you grow, become closer and really appreciate each other more. Work really does become just as fun as play with if you develop relationships with the people around you in the right way.

We should all enjoy what we do. Most people work to sustain their lifestyles and worldly commitments and ended up all stressed up and not contented. Others are happy and considered their workplace as home surrounded by workmates they called their families.
Employers must treat their staffs well and with respect. Do not take them for granted as without them there will be no company. Employees must be thankful that they are not jobless. They must be loyal and dedicated to their company for giving them a chance to work.
If both parties can work and get along in harmony by compromising with each other, then work is not work but something we like and look forward to do irrespective of the working hours.
We are blessed if we can work in or be part of Kechara Organization and that we may serve to benefit others. Kechara Organization, is one big happy family where we work hard and play hard which sets a good example for other companies to follow.

I ‘ve often heard youngsters whine that “I have no life at work”. To them “life” means holidays and clubbing….activities they perceive that can bring them happiness.
Rinpoche teaches us how to make all situations, every minute of our life meaningful and rewarding by changing our view.
The saying that ” all good things must come to an end” is proven wrong because if we can change our view, we can make our whole life into a never ending happy time. How logical!

  93. ngeowchin on Jul 22, 2010 at 11:47 am

Thank you Rinpoche for opening our mind to a new take on our working environment and the people we share our office with.We are so stupid to limit our capacity to enjoy happiness by assuming it has to be within a family structure.I agree that many of my friends have given me support, help and shared happy moments which my own family members cannot. In fact, during my active career before retirement, I spent more time with my friends and workmates than my family. We hear people talking about spending quality time during the weekends with family. It would be unfair and biased if we say we did not spend quality time with our friends and workmates too.
Unfortunately, we do not respond with same love and care to them as we do to our family, just because of the labelling and blood ties.
All it takes is adopting a fresh view and consider its many benefits to others and ourselves. As Rinpoche said, we cannot control how long we will live, but we certainly can control our mind and determination to make our environment a friendlier and more caring place at home and at work.

  94. Li Kim on Jul 21, 2010 at 7:16 pm

I like this article very much. Thank you Rinpoche.
It is amazing how much time we spend at the workplace and with our workmates. Yet, many of us hate our work and do not appreciate our workmates. For many of us, unless you work in a family business with family members, we spend more time with our workmates than our family!
This article gives deep perspective how we can appreciate and make our workplace a more meaningful place with the purpose to benefit people. Being happy and creating happiness are key in my career now as CEO of KMP. I am truly blessed to have this in my life.
For many you may not be in an organization which you think benefits people, do not think that. Just be kind and nice to people around you. IF you want to do more, check us out in Kechara.

  95. Shirley Tan on Jul 20, 2010 at 12:48 pm

This should be a mandatory read for everyone and I do mean, everyone.
In fact, it’d be great for all the Human Resource Departments in every company to send this out to all their employees. They should even print it out and have it posted into their Bulletin Board in places like the pantry and drink dispenser where people normally congregate and chat.
No one really enjoys their work. We see it as a necessary evil. Necessary because it feeds the lifestyle we want to maintain.
Only a select few can actually say that they love their work. This is, sadly, only a minority.
In this post, Rinpoche has spelt out very clearly that it only takes a shift in our perspectives. Change our thought patterns and we will start enjoying our work as much as our playtime.
At the end of the day, the reason why so many people are stressed at work and seeking pyschiatric treatement even, is because they are so unhappy at work.
Imagine a change of mind set changes everything.

    • Andrew Hibberd on Jan 9, 2015 at 11:07 am

if we make everything mandatory then we fail to grasp the truth
do you really think this read and all others must be mandatory?
im really interested in your opinion

Thank you so much Rinpoche for this post as it matched the working attitude that i currently have (although not completely) and an interesting way of following up with that. This is a very important teaching for so many of us out here working and dont have the merit to work in the organization yet on how to make our lives much more meaningful than just doing ‘a job’ and getting on with it. This is a brilliant way of injecting some meaning into the lives of so many people out there…

  97. thierryfornow on Jul 20, 2010 at 2:07 am

Thank you Rinpoche for this post.
It made me reflect on how to improve on my relationship with those that I work with and that I take sometimes for “granted.”
The points to reflect on and act upon are real step stones for us to create a better human environment.
I anticipate that this post will indeed help many people as they can relate to it directly and very personally.
Also,it is applicable immediately and with immediate positive results!
This is about caring for others and creating causes for peace, first around us directly, then indirectly by inspiring others to become better people.
    World peace is achievable!

  98. Andrew James Boon on Jul 20, 2010 at 1:53 am

Yet another insightful post. Indeed work should not be “work” as it sounds like a chore. From a secular standpoint, we should always love doing our jobs because we spend so much physical and mental time on it. If we do not, we will become bitter as more than half our lives are wasted on something we do not enjoy but is seen purely as a financial means of security. That as we all know does not equate happiness.
As an employer, the happiness and welfare of our staff is of utmost importance. Most employers do not see or want to acknowledge that it is the very staff/employee that makes up the company. Whom without them, the company is nothing! I could not have a company without the support of my staff and as such I give them as much respect, support and gratitude back. They are really like an extended family and Thierry and I will help them whenever we can.
This similar feeling we have in Kechara and its various departments especially Tsem Ladrang. There is often the underlying genuine care and concern on a much larger scale of course! Perhaps that is why both Thierry and I always feel right at home whenever we contribute in our small way and are exposed to just that culture.
Thank you all at Kechara for making us feel at home and thank you Rinpoche for welcoming us home! With much love

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Antionette for this detailed sharing,

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.

Winning the lottery was part of my dreams, I tried so hard to win big but all to no avail, until I came across Dr Lucas online who made my dreams come through and made me win 10 million dollars. I was a logistics manager who lives in Lancaster, S.C. and works about an hour’s drive away, in Charlotte, N.C., I stopped at a store to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket during my lunch break, because Dr Lucas gave me all the assurance that the numbers are not going to fail after I did all he asked me to do. Dr lucas is a powerful Dr that is on a mission to eradicate poverty from people’s lives and i have confirmed that by winning $10 million with the numbers he provided for me, it is my promise to tell the world about my experience with Dr Lucas and that’s what I’m doing now, you can win the lottery fast with the help of Dr Lucas he is tested and trusted Email: Drlucasspelltemple@gmail. com or WhatsApp +234 904 794 3567 he will help you.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.

Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. All thanks to our Guru bringing this practice to Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong Malaysia.

Wow ,reading all these powerful quotes had me realised much better of giving even I have little. May H E Tsem Rinpoche’s sincere advice to reach the far shore of liberation to everyone reading this blog. The most truly generous people are those who give silently without asking any in return. There is no exercise better than reaching and lifting people up. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Well creating and lighting for others we naturally light our own way. Helping others especially those unfortunate ones, make us feel more positive about our own circumstances.

Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .
Thank you Rinpoche and team effort making it possible.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

After Dorje Shugden puja @3pm, we had Rinpoche's Swift Return puja too. We laughed as Sis Swee Bee was commenting that Tang should smile ~ here's the reason why we laughed. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta Goh

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
