According to Buddhism, high-level meditators and enlightened beings attain the realisation of Emptiness (the highest wisdom) and Bodhicitta (the ultimate compassionate wish to benefit others) through tremendous effort and practice. Since they have achieved such powerful attainments, they become worthy objects of refuge. That is why they naturally infuse their environments with the blessings of their attainments, especially in the areas where they engaged in their practices.

Hence, there are many places that are associated with great meditators, enlightened beings and mahasiddhas who have shown miracles. In some of the places where such great beings have practised or appeared, self-arisen images of the deities have manifested. These images appear miraculously in order to benefit sentient beings by becoming objects of worship and veneration through which we are able to connect with the enlightened beings, generate powerful aspirations, and accumulate tremendous amounts of merit.

One of the abilities that we attain when we achieve Enlightenment is that of ‘instant magical emanation’ which is mentioned in the King of Prayers, also known as Samantabhadra’s ‘Aspiration to Good Actions’ from the Gandavyuha chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra. This is the ability of an enlightened being to manifest innumerable emanations simultaneously. Each emanation possesses the same mind but a different purpose or disposition to benefit sentient beings. These emanations can even take on the form of inanimate objects in order to be of benefit to sentient beings. Hence, it is not unusual that the great Bodhisattva of Compassion, Chenrezig, manifested as a self-arising statue.

The Great Bodhisattva Chenrezig

Chenrezig is the Tibetan name for the famous Bodhisattva named Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India, or Kuan Yin in Chinese. He is considered to be one of the Eight Great Bodhisattva Disciples or ‘Eight Close Sons’ of Lord Buddha. The other Great Bodhisattva Disciples include Manjushri, Vajrapani, Maitreya, Ksitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Samantabhadra and Sarvanivaranavishkambhin.

Chenrezig is famously known to embody the Buddha’s great compassion and manifests both in male and female forms according to culture and the needs of society. He is frequently depicted holding the stem of a lotus, which is why he is also known by the epithet, ‘Holder of the Lotus’ or Padmapani.

Chenrezig is widely considered to be the patron Bodhisattva of Tibet and is worshipped by all the great lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. One of the most famous and highest incarnation lineage such as the Dalai Lamas are believed to be emanations of Chenrezig. In Tibetan mythology, Chenrezig is believed to be the progenitor of their race.

The Origins of the Self-Arising Chenrezig

According to legend, there was a Tibetan boy who travelled to the Triloknath Valley in the Lahaul-Spiti region of India. Although to all appearances he was a simple shepherd boy, he was in fact an emanation of Chenrezig himself. Every day, he would herd the village goats up to the grasslands by a small lake in the mountains to graze.

Unfortunately, upon returning to the village, the goats could not produce any milk. The village people began to suspect that the shepherd was milking the goats for himself and gave him a stern warning. Feeling wrongly accused, the shepherd decided to investigate what really went on when the goats were up in the mountains.

The next day he took the goats up to the mountains as usual and hid nearby hoping to catch the thief who was stealing the milk. He waited for a while and saw a glowing figure emerge from the lake and begin to milk the goats. The glowing figure turned out to be Chenrezig and he was drinking the goats’ milk. The shepherd ran over and approached Chenrezig, explaining that the villagers were accusing him of stealing the goats’ milk for himself. He requested Chenrezig to go down to the village with him and tell the local people that he was the one drinking all the milk.

Chenrezig agreed to do so and asked the shepherd to carry him on his back down to the village. Chenrezig also advised the shepherd that he might hear certain strange noises as they set out on their journey but whatever he heard, he should not look back. As they descended the mountain, the shepherd heard a loud sound and, in the spur of the moment, he forgot Chenrezig’s instructions and turned back to see what was happening. It is said that he saw seven men dressed in white following behind. When these seven men realised that the shepherd was looking at them, they immediately transformed into seven Nagas (serpentine beings) who eventually disappeared into the hillside.

The facade of the Trilokinath temple is unique for its amalgamation of Hindu and Buddhist elements and symbols.

It is said that if only the shepherd had followed Chenrezig’s advice not to look back, there could have been more holy objects (the nagas were carrying them) to liberate sentient beings, but due to our collective negative karma, that did not manifest. As the shepherd continued on his journey back to the village, Chenrezig became heavier and heavier. By the time they reached the village, there was conflict and fighting amongst the villagers and Chenrezig had by then become far too heavy to carry further. The shepherd then dropped Chenrezig onto the ground and discovered that he had miraculously transformed into pure white marble.

Therefore, it is said that this statue is actually Chenrezig transformed into a marble statue. The shepherd himself also transformed into stone and both images, along with a black stone carving of the Four-Armed Mahakala with a naturally arising OM MANI PADME HUM mantra at the back are enshrined in this small temple. Several miracles associated with these holy items have been reported over the years, including the statue speaking and dripping nectar. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has even appointed a caretaker who looks after the monastery here.

Ever since that day, many Buddhist pilgrims, particularly from the Himalayan region, come to the Phagpa Temple at Triloknath, Himachal Pradesh in order to pay homage, pray and also to engage in Nyungne fasting retreats with Chenrezig as their focus of worship. It is believed that aspirational prayers made to this Chenrezig statue and image of the shepherd will be fulfilled. One can also walk three to five hours up the steep mountain to see Omay Tso (literally meaning Milk Lake) from where Chenrezig is said to have emerged. The water of the lake is white in colour and descends in a powerful downwards stream towards the village. Hence, this little temple has since become a popular pilgrimage spot.

The courtyard of the Trilokinath temple features large Buddhist prayer wheels, granite lingam and small Nandi (bull) representing Shiva, while the ancient wooden pagoda-style temple is decorated with Tibetan prayer flags.

Praise and Prayer to Noble Avalokiteshvara

Bringing Forth the Rains of Happiness and Well-Being

selfarisingchenrezig003

Homage to Ārya Lokeśvara

The compassion of all the conquering Buddhas of the ten directions,
numbering as many as the atoms of the countless worlds,
as deep as an ocean and attached, completely attached, to living beings,
from which was born that perfect splendor of wonderful qualities
renowned as Avalokiteśvara, the great guide,
the jewel mountain upon whom we should all rely.
To you I bow.

Upon a mandala replete with the light of the moon,
your feet like pure lotus petals stand together
in the center of a pure and fresh lotus.
In the world you radiate with perfect clarity like the moon when full.
Seeing you, the heart is relieved of all pain,
and great joy is spread everywhere.

Though your compassion is as cool as the touch of snow,
it nevertheless burns away the hordes of demons.
Though your wisdom is far beyond phenomena characterized by signs,
mandalas of detailed elaboration nevertheless appear to it.
Though you have crossed over samsara, you constantly show birth in the three realms.
The wise are amazed at such illusion-like activities.

Permeating all phenomena, you are the orb of the sky on a clear autumn night,
Relied upon constantly by all fortunate beings, you are the uncomplaining great earth.
Dispelling the darkness of ignorance of the entire world you are the blazing sun.
Soothing the torment of the mind burned by anger you are the moon.

You show the mandala of your beautiful face like a fully bloomed white lotus.
As white as rock crystal and a pure conch shell, you possess the beauty of youth.
In the midst of limitless and vast clouds of offerings
you enjoy magical play with the liberating goddess,
radiant amid an entourage of countless sugatas, bodhisattvas, and wrathful deities.

All those who have fallen to the wretched states of being,
tormented by the myriad sufferings brought on by fire, water,
pernicious fortune, the wrath of kings, and the like,
are drawn up one after the other by your rays of light,
as if they were being bathed by the moon,
and brought to enjoy the supreme bliss of the gods.

Your fragrant braids of hair tied up upon your head blend with the blue light of the sky,
the mighty Buddha Amitabha sits beautifully in its center as your lineage crown.
Your right hand in the mudra of giving, from whose fingertips constantly fall
drops of white nectar like shining pearls that soothe the torment of the hungry ghosts.

Your left hand resting upon your hip in graceful pose,
a beautiful and pure form prostrated to by Brahma, Indra and other arrogant gods.
You are, therefore, the Mighty One of the World.
You reveal a thousand other hands adorned with mudras
of the wheel, the lotus, the arrow, the bow, and so on.
Possessing a thousand eyes, you show perfectly eleven beautiful faces.

To some you emanate as Simhanada, the leader of the malicious nagas,
and to others you are Amoghapaśa, Nilakantha, and so forth.
At times you are Hayagriva, the destroyer of hindrances and lord of the wrathful,
Sometimes you are black Mahakala, and others who shatter the three worlds,
but your mind never strays from compassion.

The vast expanse of worlds that stretches throughout space knows no end,
and yet you emanate as many forms as there are living beings in these worlds,
all of which is done without the thought to move even a single hair.
Like rain falling from the clouds, you have no deliberation.

You have left behind all words that do not in any way serve living beings.
Your unending melody of speech in tune with the mentality of each being
teaches pathways of Dharma greater in number than the drops in an ocean.
Those whose ears receive your speech will dwell perfectly within your words.

Like the singing of a beautiful youth that blends with the sounds
of the many-stringed vina of the celestial musicians,
your words delight the mind, but will destroy the desires of the desirous.
Like the thunder that roars through the sky, your speech resounds far and high,
and yet for those struck by fright, their fear is at once reduced to mere words.

When you turn the wheel of the Dharma
in a voice of high and pure tones endowed with every quality
in order to liberate those wandering in samsara,
constantly trapped by unstable birth and death,
you have already perfected the features of the speech
of the Buddhas of the past, present, and future.
Therefore, as master of peerless qualities of speech,
you are renowned as the guru of all worlds.

Living beings love themselves, and yet sometimes,
out of anger, they are intent on killing themselves.
You, however, constantly look upon living beings
as a mother would look upon her only child.
Long ago your mind cast away
even the tiniest thought of doing harm to others.
The love, therefore, that those like me have for themselves
cannot come anywhere near a fraction of your compassion.

Your never-ceasing peaceful gaze is as calming as being bathed
in the scented waters of camphor, sandalwood, and vetiver grass.
One part of your eyes is forever fixed on the six types of living beings,
and yet, your mind, resting in the dharmadhatu,
where all proliferation of experience and appearance has dissolved,
is constantly embraced by the supreme bliss, with all movement stilled.
To such a mind, I prostrate.

I pray that the rains of your nectar will cool the hot hells
where beings are burned alive by flames that blaze on all sides,
where murderous butchers surround and terrify them,
their mouths agape and their eyes red and staring,
where others are boiled like grains of wheat in vats of molten copper.
I pray that your warm touch protects those in the cold hells,
where flesh and bones are torn apart by the cold.

I pray that you send forth the nectar rain of food and clothing to hungry ghosts
whose stomachs are the size of mountains, and yet whose throats are blocked,
whose limbs are as thin as veins, whose bodies are emaciated and covered with dust,
with sparks flying from their limbs where their joints rub together,
for whom merely looking at water causes it to dry up,
and who are constantly weary and tormented by thirst.

For animals who will even throw away their precious lives
in pursuit of the tiny happiness of just a morsel of food,
who have no way of developing virtue and reducing non-virtue,
who are ugly in shape and color, and consequently of low merit,
I pray that you grant them the ability quickly to remember virtue,
and that they will be able to live a life of happiness.

Even the delights and pleasure of the celestial king, Brahma,
enjoyed within divine mansions that radiate with jeweled light,
will one day, through the force of transience, fade away,
and he too will plunge into the fires of hell,
where even his bones and marrow will be burned away.
The young gods who lie on the soft beds that bring pleasure to the touch,
and who play and frolic in the beautiful pleasure gardens
will one day drink boiling molten metal,
and be dragged across ground strewn with sharp iron thorns.

Those that are high will quickly become lowly servants fit only to be kicked.
Like the flowers at the end of autumn, this time of youth will soon fade.
Like enjoying a borrowed ornament, this wealth will definitely disappear in time.
Like a flash of lightning, even my life appears only for a moment.

The world after this one is far from the one we are used to,
and it is I alone who must wander in its dense darkness.
And so it is that in this terrifying state of samsara
the deception of the mental afflictions will ultimately let us down.
I beg that you lift us with the hand of compassion from this ocean of suffering.

It is true that the teachings of the Buddha are a tradition
well established in this land surrounded by snowy mountains,
but most Dharma practitioners are shorn of the clothes of ethics,
and like naked wanderers, have abandoned all shame.
They befriend lay people, look toward them,
and engage in acts looked down upon by the wise.
Alas! the sun of the sacred Dharma has almost set between the mountains.

The powerful eagerly pursue their own desires,
fight among each other, and mistreat the weak.
The poor are constantly in servitude,
and cannot even find meager food.
In such a dreadful state of degeneration,
if we were to be ignored by you, noble one,
then what did your promise of the past mean?
Who can your subjects turn to for refuge?

Even your own name is blessed.
Whoever hears it will be freed from fear.
Those who keep your name in mind will reap fruit
similar to performing devotions to countless Buddhas.
This has been taught by the great sage with words of truth,
and so with great hope we make a prayer that you, great protector,
who have left behind the mind that is distracted elsewhere,
will rescue these desperate sentient beings.

I pray that all living beings devote themselves to the Three Jewels,
that they have faith in cause and effect and follow always the path of Dharma.
I pray that with countless wrathful and peaceful magical emanations,
all perfectly suited to the various types and merits of living beings,
you bring to happiness to all dear friends
who have fallen into this dreadful state of samsara.

May I, too, who have great devotion to you,
have the stainless intelligence that knows the truth of the way things are,
as well as a complete disenchantment with samsara,
and may I strive over many lives to work for others with compassion.
May I attain the perfection of wisdom whose power will crush all maras,
may I dwell in the ways of the pure and joyful Dharma,
and nourish living beings over a long time.

I am one of low intelligence, but the milk lake of faith in my mind
has risen up to produce these animated and beautiful white bubbles
that is this garland of words of exultation and lament.
Whoever reads, hears, or recalls it,
may they all be freed from the taints of wrong deeds,
and be cared for in the Potala pure land
by that great and supreme conqueror, Avalokiteśvara.

This praise and prayer to the noble lord of the world, Avalokiteśvara, that brings forth the rains of happiness and well-being, was composed by the Dharma teacher, and fully ordained monk of Sakyamuni Buddha, Losang Kalsang Gyatso (the Seventh Dalai Lama).

Translated, in accordance with the commentary of Könchok Jikmé Wangpo (first incarnation of Jamyang Shepa), by Gavin Kilty, January 2014.

The great Bodhisattva of Compassion, Chenrezig, has manifested as a self-arising statue at Triloknath Valley in the Lahaul-Spiti region of India. The glittering white-painted temple is situated on a cliff at the end of a village street and is surrounded by snow mountains and pine trees in the far distance. Its altitude is 2,760 metres. It is revered as Avalokiteshvara by Buddhists and as Shiva by Hindus. This holy shrine is considered as the most scarred pilgrim sites where thousands of Buddhists and Hindus will go there. The origin of the temple still remains a mystery, constructed in the 10th century. The uniqueness of the temple lies in the fact that it is the only temple in the whole world where both Hindu and Buddhists pay their reverence to the same deity . There’s an amazing legend behind this self arising Chenrezig recording to the locals. Interesting reading from this post. Would love to see this self-arising Chenrezig. Anyway merely looking at the pictures of this self-arising Chenrezig is a blessing.
Thanks Rinpoche and Pastor David for this sharing.

In Buddhism enlightened beings who manifested and emanated to any forms to benefit all sentient beings. Chenrezig is variably depicted, described and portrayed in different cultures. The self arising Chenrezig at Phakpa Temple in Triloknath, is one such miracles where Chenrezig manifested . Beautiful story behind this beautiful self arising Chenrezig. Those areas where great masters ,yogis and lamas are associated with are very holy with strong powerful energies , it will be a blessing for us to visit. I have not been there before, wish I could one day see it .
Anyway one such place with powerful energy is at our Malaysian shore….Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong, Pahang . May more people visit this beautiful, holy place filled lots of blessing .
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for this wonderful sharing.

Wow…. seeing the self arising images of the holy places is believing. Its amazing indeed as explained by Pastor David. I have not been to India where this self arising images is. Would surely love to see sometime if permitted. In Buddhism, as we know that all enlightened beings has manifested for the purpose of benefiting all sentient beings. Self-arising images of Chenrizig in Phagpa Temple at Triloknath, India arise when the positive holy energy is there. There are places where self arising images appeared from no where such as at Wu Tai San, Nepal, Tibet and meditation caves of Highly Lamas. I am fortunate to see it at Wu Tai San and Tibet but not in India. It is simply amazing and merely by looking at it is a blessing. Interesting read about the story of how Chenrezig and shepherd. It’s a miracle how both of them manifested into a marble statue.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for sharing this.

The bodhisattva ideal, is one of the highest spiritual motivation one can aspire to, as it involves enduring for as long as samsara is still in existence. The Bodhisattvas toil on endlessly for the sake of all sentient beings, and they do it with all the 6 Paramitas perfected.
Chenrezig is one who fully represents that ideal.

It’s amazing to see the self arising images of the holy places and also to read the stories. All the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have great compassion in emanating in various forms in order to suit the people of that place to pray, practise and generate merits. We are so fortunate to have our Guru Tsem Rinpoche to guide us and share with us all the dharma and holy places so we can learn and widen our knowledge. Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for sharing this beautiful article.

Self-arising images arise because of the sacred energy in this place and it is a great place to visit as we are blessed by such divine presence. I feel very fortunate to learn about how these statues arise and how it can help people who come to visit. We need the blessings of these divine messengers so that we can connect in our future lives with the Dharma and continue on our path.

Miracles happened in places whereby such great beings have practised before and self-arisen images of the deities have manifested. I have heard of these before and saw one before on the a descending rock wall near a Chinese temple in my place years ago. These images appear miraculously in order to benefit sentient beings by becoming objects of worship. To see a self arisen images of Chenrizig in Phagpa Temple at Triloknath, India is blessing as this place having strong energy . Feeling excited after reading the amazing story behind this self arising Chenrezig .

I love reading stories about enlighten beings. They appeared to help and to bless people. I believe enlighten beings does exist to show signs and miracles, sometimes to test our faith and sincerity. i have read stories about Manjushri appeared in Wu Tai Shan and many holy places. I also saw the self rising tara on the rock in Nepal. because of all these legend, miracles and amazing stories that people gained faith in Buddhism. When we have faith, we practice. People like to meditate and pilgrimage at these places to gain blessings.

At the age of degenerate time, many have lost touch and loosing faith in these stories. Although at this moment we cannot see them but with strong faith and sincerity i still believe they are around us helping and guarding us always .

  10. Pastor Chia on Feb 8, 2018 at 9:02 am

All the buddhist enlightenment being will find way to emulate different form to help sentient being need. I have no doubt enlightenment being like Avolokitieshara manifest become stone statue in order to help others at India. Holy being such as Lama Tsongkhapa meditate in the cage behind Gaden monastery in Tibet, Pabongka meditation cave manifestHeruka eye, Guru rinpoche cave in Nepalese have self arising Tara. Those plase have their holy energy and aspiration prayer and manifet miracle sign at their meditation spot. It bring many people with faith came to pilgrimage and make offering. H.E. Tsem Rinpoche have advise his students make strong prayer for dharma to grown in KFR. At future, miracle sign will show at KFR when dharma start growing and more and more practitioner will come to practice in this land.

Thank you for sharing . In Buddhism enlightened beings who manifested and emanated to any forms with the purpose to benefit all sentient beings. And is not only for that time but pass on from generation to generation in order peoples can visited the place and get blessings and also for spiritual grow. May I have the opportunity to visit in this Phagpa Temple at Triloknath in this life.

  12. Pastor Albert on Feb 8, 2018 at 7:33 am

It is interesting to read this story, it is amazing that how Chenrezig transformed into a marble statue and all these is due to because the shepherd did not listen to the instruction of Chenrezig, this also remind us that when our guru gave us instructions and we do not follow, even it is as simple as do not turn around, it is just a very simple action to turn our body around, but the consequences are huge, it is not only about us, but it will affect so many people around that could not get the blessing or the teaching of Dharma, when they missed out this opportunity, we won’t know how many lifetime more they have to take until they can meet the Dharma again. Hence, we must always follow our guru’s instructions even though we may not see the logic behind or the purpose of it or how difficult it is, when the instructions was given, it is definitely beneficial to not only us, but also the people around us.

  13. Justin Cheah on Feb 8, 2018 at 3:22 am

Self arising images and all other miracles are always associated with highly attained practitioners. Self Arising Chenrezig is no different. Just like Self Arising Tara which is also situated near Guru Rinpoche’s cave and there is also a very sacred Vajrayogini chapel near by on top of the hill. It may be referred as miracles to us but in reality these are actually energy generated from very positive actions which is a norm in Buddhism world.

  14. Andrea Lai on Feb 8, 2018 at 12:47 am

It is always interesting reading stories of Buddha. I like the part where the shepherd heard sound while carrying Chenrezig and he turn around, saw the seven white dressed men then transform into nagas and disappeared. There are so many mysterious stories that we haven’t heard or encountered. Personally, I experienced few times in one of a temple at my hometown. I witnessed the Buddha Shakyamuni will blink his eyes and many witnesses too. I believe it is our faith to the Buddha and our karma to accept it.

  15. Vivian Ong on Feb 8, 2018 at 12:18 am

It is interesting to know about the story of this self arising Chenrezig. As for my own experience, I personally witness the self arising Tara at Parphing, Nepal. I guess this is because of the positive energy generated by the great masters who meditated in that area and maybe because the people in that area need the guidance from a Buddha. That is why Buddha image arose in many forms to help the people in that area due to their karmic link.

  16. nichlolas on Feb 7, 2018 at 11:48 pm

Interesting sharing by Pastor David. Strongly agree that many places that are associated with great meditators great meditator, enlightened beings and mahasiddhas, the place will have strong energy that one can get blessing by visiting them.

Many things happened due to our karma and since we are at this degenerate time the enlightened being will create their appearance to benefits us.

  17. Pastor Henry Ooi on Feb 7, 2018 at 10:54 pm

Stories abound of many enlightened beings who manifested and emanated to benefit all sentient beings. I am sure these stories are real, perhaps the narration could have differed from the original after being told several times by different people over a long period of time. What I do not see or do not hear does not mean the stories are not real. But I have seen the image of the Bodhisattva Tara that self arose on a big rock in Pharping, Nepal. Behind Tara is another self arisen image of Ganesha (Ganapati). Over the years I have visited Pharping a few times, and each time I visited I saw the image of Tara becoming clearer. If anyone who plans to go to Nepal, add Pharping into your bucket list. Apart from the self arising Tara, there are other holy sites that one can visit. There is the Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) retreat cave, and a VajraYogini chapel housed in the home of a Nepali family.

  18. pammie yap on Feb 7, 2018 at 10:44 pm

The legend of the image is really interesting! Whatever the legend is, it is great to know that the piece of marble was made into something so holy and full of blessings. And it is preserved so well till today where many more are still getting the blessings. This is not the first self arisen image I have heard of, there is self arisen Tara in Nepal and the eye of Heruka in Tibet https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/great-lamas-masters/herukas-eye.html

This shows that through spiritual practice and attainments used to benefit others, holy places arise and bless the people and surroundings. And holy beings definitely exist!

    证悟者可以变化成无数的形象以利益众生。 其中佛菩萨也可以化身成为佛像。

Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for this very blessed write up about Chenrezig and the beautiful powerful praise of Chenrezig by the Seventh Dalai Lama. Hope I have the merits to see this self arising Chenrezig, or Kuan Yin whom I have a spiritual connection with. ??

  21. Pastor Han Nee on Feb 3, 2018 at 6:37 pm

What a beautiful powerful praise of Chenrezig by the Seventh Dalai Lama! This garland of words of prayer invoking the blessings of Chenrezig and making heartfelt pleas to him to send a rain of nectar to each of the six realms and to the beings of this degenerate age (full of their delusory pursuits )to relieve and eliminate suffering, is just so spiritually charged with love and compassion!

The story of the shepherd boy and the statue of Chenrezig turning into stone, demonstrates very clearly the great compassion and forgiving nature of Chenrezig. In order to help and benefit all, the statue of Chenrezig manifested as a self-arising Chenrezig to bestow his blessings and protection on all. Enshrined in the Phagpa Temple at Trilokinath, it has performed several miracles over the years. Hence this has become a popular pilgrimage spot and aspirations made here have been known to be fulfilled!

Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David Lai for this beautiful post of the self-arising Chenrezig.

  22. Jacinta Goh on Feb 2, 2018 at 7:07 pm

Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David Lai for the above story.
I wonder if the prayer above is specifically meant to be recited when paying homage to this Self-Arising Chenrezig? Thank you

  23. Lew on Feb 2, 2018 at 5:11 pm

Thank you Pastor David and Rinpoche for explaining the meaning of “self arising”, and the nice story of Chenrezig. May I have the opportunity to do retreat in this Phagpa Temple at Triloknath. ??

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Antionette for this detailed sharing,

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.
Quoted Ceasing to do evil, Cultivating the good, Purifying the heart .
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing such a meaningful teachings with folded hands.

Winning the lottery was part of my dreams, I tried so hard to win big but all to no avail, until I came across Dr Lucas online who made my dreams come through and made me win 10 million dollars. I was a logistics manager who lives in Lancaster, S.C. and works about an hour’s drive away, in Charlotte, N.C., I stopped at a store to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket during my lunch break, because Dr Lucas gave me all the assurance that the numbers are not going to fail after I did all he asked me to do. Dr lucas is a powerful Dr that is on a mission to eradicate poverty from people’s lives and i have confirmed that by winning $10 million with the numbers he provided for me, it is my promise to tell the world about my experience with Dr Lucas and that’s what I’m doing now, you can win the lottery fast with the help of Dr Lucas he is tested and trusted Email: Drlucasspelltemple@gmail. com or WhatsApp +234 904 794 3567 he will help you.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.
Thank you Rinpoche and Anila for this sharing.

Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. All thanks to our Guru bringing this practice to Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong Malaysia.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing for us to understand better.

Wow ,reading all these powerful quotes had me realised much better of giving even I have little. May H E Tsem Rinpoche’s sincere advice to reach the far shore of liberation to everyone reading this blog. The most truly generous people are those who give silently without asking any in return. There is no exercise better than reaching and lifting people up. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Well creating and lighting for others we naturally light our own way. Helping others especially those unfortunate ones, make us feel more positive about our own circumstances.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing all these powerful quotes.

Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .
Thank you Rinpoche and team effort making it possible.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
