Visiting Hong Kong

(By Tsem Rinpoche)

I like to visit Hong Kong from time to time . There is nothing really much in the city for someone like me, except on Hollywood Road, where they have a string of art galleries that always contain interesting “antique” thangkas, statues, and tibetan artifacts. I find those interesting, although overly priced. And the other place which is one of my favorites in the world is the Lantau Island Buddha.

So my visit to Hong Kong this time around was to make a pilgrimage to Lantau Island Buddha, and along with me came JP, Beng Kooi, Su Ming, Pastor Loh Seng Piow, Bryan, Carmen, and we met up with some friends here, namely Run Run and Race. Also Sean flew in from Shanghai to join us. We have been meeting a variety of friends here, and we have had stimulating interesting conversations.

We’re staying in a comfortable hotel that is in a centralized area. From our window we have a direct view of harbor and surprisingly the water is tending towards turquoise. The weather has been quite nice – not much rain, warm, pleasant.

We visited various eateries ,and they are amazingly fast in their service and quick in their customer assistance. I am pleasantly surprised that the restaurants and eateries are very very good in the service industry.

The taxi drivers in Hong Kong are no nonsense, direct, quick and really really efficient. They know where they are going, no fuss, no hassle and whatever is on the meter without any sign of haggling you just pay.  And in such a large metropolitan city like Hong Kong, it’s amazing how easy the taxis are to obtain and to go from point A to B.

When you come to Hong Kong, and you wander around and look around, it feels like any huge extremely modern metropolitan city. such as Tokyo, Bangkok, New York, Los Angeles, Beijing, etc. Hong Kong is alive, pulsating, throbbing, and very very happening. In many ways, it’s extremely advanced organized, clean, and has a very safe feeling. We even walked around the streets and lanes and it’s dense with people needless to say, but I really kept getting a deja vu that i was in New York City. But a much cleaner and safer version.

Salespeople in Hong Kong are generally friendly, easy, fast and efficient. It is different from the Hong Kong of 15 years ago when I first visited. And if you don’t speak Chinese, like myself, everywhere you go, English is quite predominant and you can get by without speaking any Chinese so it’s really an easy city to get around in.

Last night we went on a tour of the city by one of our friends, Run Run, and we basically drove up and down all over the city in Hong Kong island and Kowloon for over 4 hours. It was very nice and our tour culminated at The Address to be at in Hong Kong which is The Peak . The Peak is on top of a mountain in the middle of Hong Kong and it has the very privileged residences of the very wealthy and elite of Hong Kong. It was windy, airy and had spectacular skyline views of the whole city. There seems to be a very interesting restaurant up there, also called The Peak, which by the time we got up there it was closed but we hope to go back another day perhaps because it boasts of great views.

We were warned of a Grade 3 typhoon for today  (July 1, 2013)… whatever that means because I don’t know how many grades of typhoon there are… and a part of our group went up to Lantau Island by taxi and they arrived within 40 minutes at the cable cars and from the cable car station it took them another 30 minutes to ascend to the actual place where the holy Buddha of Lantau Island resides. So on a normal day, with normal routes, it would take a person from the centre of HK to Lantau Island probably 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to the top which is quite pleasant because the drive up is scenic.

At the cable car station, there are large shopping malls, eateries, trains, buses, taxis… whatever you need. It is far and it is on a huge island but it’s far from not having civilization. From the cable car (which everyone should experience) you go up to the top of the mountain where the holy Buddha is. This Buddha is in this area and it is managed by the Chinese Mahayana monastery called Po Lin and they have extended to having Ngong Ping village at the top. Ngong Ping village has a lot of traditional shops selling statues, traditional masks, opera dolls, key chains and very interesting curios. It is a must to visit.

I was having some tailbone problems and pains so I decided to sleep in and not go and our people went. I went to sleep around 3.30 am and got up around 12 midday and my tailbone problem felt so much better so I decided to take a taxi and surprise everyone and go up there. We hired a car from the hotel and the normal 40 minutes drive turned into a 1 hour and 20 minute drive because there was a bus accident along the freeway and traffic was at a standstill. Luckily, our driver was very nice and accommodating.

When we arrived at the cable cars, the typhoon had started. Rain and wind but no thunder, and it comes on and off, on and off. Well, the cable cars were closed down understandably, so we had to take another taxi to go to the top which took another 30 minutes. And it was just raining really heavily, but was overall a pleasant and safe drive along the way, where you can see the turquoise ocean, green foliage and a dam.

We finally got to the top, and I was a little disorientated for awhile because they had built and expanded from what I last remembered. But pretty soon, Bryan and Carmen came running up and brought me over to the rest of our group. But I offered 3 large incense to the Buddha first.

Then we went to Ngong Ping village and looked in some of the very interesting curio shops there, of which some were closed due to the typhoon. To my surprise, there were quite a lot of tourists, although much more quieter than the last time I was here, and there were people scaling the stairs up and down to pay homage to the Buddha on top.

As we entered Ngong Ping Village, which is the eatery and shopping area, it started to rain, so we stopped by a little place to have some french fries and hot tea and wait for the rain to pass which it did quickly. Then we proceeded to the base of the where the Buddha and we slowly ascended the stairs, stopping many times for jokes, pictures and to be in awe of this great Buddha edifice.

We reached the top and did circumambulations and then I gave a short Dharma explanation as it was raining and it was getting a little late. And I also gave refuge vows for the people who had already taken refuge to energize their vows. And then we all did fervent prayers for gaining Bodhicitta and the realization of wisdom in this life. Supplications were made to the Buddha to bless us that in all our lives we may never be separated from the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha and qualified spiritual teachers. We also did prayers for our Kechara members, Kechara projects and Kechara Forest Retreat along with the movie we are intending to do.  The security guards up there were very accommodating because they saw us doing our prayers and meditations although it was already time to close. As you can see in the video, it was windy and raining but very pleasant and cooling. And I, for lack of a better word, enjoyed it thoroughly.

The Buddha is spectacular and well made, and I was awestruck again and I definitely want to be back to make a pilgrimage. And below this, I am going to include some statistical information on the Buddha image for you and you can see our interesting video. After the prayers were done, we descended the stairs carefully, grabbed more photos and some fans of Race Wong called her over and wanted to take some pictures with her because she was a singer in Hong Kong and also did some acting. Run Run and our group were very helpful in assisting me down the stairs because it was slightly slippery. At the base, the taxi driver was waiting and whisked me to the cable car area. And there, the hotel taxi was eveready and took us back to the hotel without any incident and quite quickly this time around as there was no traffic.  We got back, took a hot shower because we were caught in the rain, ordered some food and rested and put up this post. I am comfortable, cool, and without much pain from my tailbone as in a little while, I will be giving a light Dharma talk to a small group again in the hotel. Questions and answers will ensue and I am sure it will be interesting.

Tomorrow, I have a whole day lined up with meeting different people, executives, actors and socialites. And that’s been my trip in Hong Kong so far. Without a mention, JP was extremely efficient in finding our hotel, preparing the place, buying books that I like, stocking the pantry with snacks and food and drinks, flowers in the room, and even putting water in the toilet because I usually use a bidet but there is no bidet here so he provided water. I can’t really take soft mattresses so he even went to the extent of having the hotel put a plank to make my mattress more firm. And this was all topped off with JP’s friendly smile, helpful demeanor and a welcoming card. I was touched by JP’s preparations for my stay here, and all his attention to detail. And I’m very happy to have Bryan, Su Min, Beng Kooi, Pastor Loh Seng Piow and Carmen also assisting on this trip.

JP, Beng Kooi, Su Ming, Pastor Loh Seng Piow and I have been a team for a few years now and we’ve done quite well together. So this was a nice pilgrimage to join us together from our individual busy schedules and works in Kechara. And besides the blessed pilgrimage to the Lantau Island Buddha, I really was looking forward to and enjoyed my time with JP, Beng Kooi, Su Ming and Pastor Loh Seng Piow. Run Run was a great help on this trip… accommodating and really made himself available for all of us and I must thank him very much .

I do recommend everyone to please visit the holy Buddha of Lantau Island because it really really is the gateway to the Pearl of the Orient. Enjoy the video, and the great pictures that we have.

Tian Tan Buddha

Widely touted as one of the most significant Lantau tourist spots, Tian Tan Buddha takes visitors on a sacred land tour of enlightenment. It is the world’s largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statue and sits calmly next to Po Lin Monastery.

The easiest way to reach the Buddha is through the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car, which takes merely 25 minutes and allows visitors to breathe in the beautiful scenery along the journey. Visitors can also choose to walk along the Ngong Ping trail.

If you look up to the southwest from Tei Tan square in the middle of the Po Lin Monastery Plaza, you will see a flight of 268 steps leading to the world’s largest outdoor bronze seated Buddha – Tian Tan Buddha, which symbolises Sakyamuni, who meditated deeply under the Bodhi tree and attained enlightenment and awakening to true reality. Walking up the steps, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Lantau and the South China Sea from the podium. The huge statue body is a breathtaking sight, and the kind smile on his face instills a sense of peacefulness.

Outstanding stats

Tian Tan Buddha sits solemnly atop the 482m Muk Yue Shan. The whole complex stands opposite to the monastery and is 6,547 m2 in size.

Facing North, the 34-metre tall Tian Tan Buddha statue sits on a three-storey pedestal.

Remarkable feat of engineering

The planning of the Tian Tan Buddha started in 1976. Constructed by the China Aeronautic Department, the works were completed in 1993.

It was named one of the “Ten Engineering Wonders in Hong Kong” and was awarded the “Merit of Unique Artistic Features” by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in 2000. Since its opening in 1993, it has consistently ranked as a top Lantau tourist spot.

Fine details of the statue

Featuring the pronounced facial expression of the Buddha and the statue craftsmanship of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the Tian Tan Buddha was built with bronze and weighs over 250 tonnes. Gold was used for the face, portraying the beauty and solemnity of the Buddha.

The right hand of the Buddha is held up as a “Fear-Not mudra” – a manifestation of the great vow to eliminate suffering from all sentient beings. The left hand is placed on the Buddha’s thigh with his palm facing out and fingers slightly pointing downwards. This is known as the “Wish-Granting mudra“, signifying the compassionate vow to grant happiness to all men.

The Dharma cakra in the palm represents the everlasting turning of the Wheel of Dharma and the dissemination of the Dharma to every corner of the world. Inside the pedestal of the Tian Tan Buddha there is a three-storey exhibition hall presenting a number of invaluable Buddhist items, including:

  • Buddha’s relic
  • Four paintings
  • The Bell
  • Hua Yan Dharma Preaching
  • Statue of Ksitigarbha
  • Six Devas outside the Giant Buddha
  • Lotus petals

How to get there

The Tian Tan Buddha is one of the largest seated Buddha images in the world. Amazing on clear sky the image sight to behold and is a popular tourist . The enormous sculpture is made of 202 bronze pieces and sits on a three-story platform. One have to walk 268 steps up to the top, to have a magnificent views from this privileged vantage point on Lantau Island . Many locals and tourist do enjoy this breath-taking views of the sea, mountains and the city of Hong Kong. I would love this if given a chance to visit this stunning statue. It’s a great experience for those lucky students and friends making this memorable trip with Rinpoche.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Hong Kong is an autonomous territory, and former British colony. A beautiful place to visit which I have not been. Hidden away by lush mountains, is the remote Po Lin Monastery where the Tian Tan Buddha statue is situated.
The Big Buddha or Giant Buddha is located on Ngong Ping Lantau Island as one of the top sightseeing attractions in Hong Kong . Its the world’s largest outdoor bronze Buddha statue. Hopefully I could visit it someday, as is such a beautiful statue surrounding by greenery environment on top of a mountain.
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing your visits there with beautiful pictures.

Thank you Rinpoche for writing and sharing the article with beautiful photos taken in front of Tian Tan Buddha for the benefit and blessing to all of us. Ever since I have read this article, it was always my wish to visit Hong Kong and pay homage to Tian Tan Buddha in Lantau Island. My wish had finally become a reality when I went to attend a relative’s wedding dinner in Hong Kong on 2nd December 2017 and the next day morning, I woke up early and embarked the journey from the hotel heading to Lantau Island to pay homage to Tian Tan Buddha together with my wife, my mother-in –law and my wife’s sisters.

By the time we arrived at Tung Chung, there was a very long queue of people waiting for their turns to purchase the cable car tickets as it was Sunday where the place was filled up with many visitors coming from different countries. We waited for about 2 hours in the queue before we were able to get to the ticket counter. While I was waiting in the queue, I thought of this could be some kind of purification for my wife, mother-in-law, my wife’s sisters as myself as we have to stand up during the long queue. I was glad that finally we managed to get into the cable car after long hours of standing and walking.

Through the teachings received from Rinpoche, I have made 3 prostrations to Tian Tan Buddha, recited one mala of long life mantra of H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche and circumambulated Tian Tan Buddha for 3 rounds before I ended with my completion dedication. Before I left, I also managed to offer 3 sticks of incense offering to the Buddha and made the dedication for many people to be able to learn, practice and share the Dharma.

May Buddhadharma reach to all sentient beings from every corner of the world and may all sentient beings able to meet, learn, practice and share the Buddhadharma until samsara ends.

    Humbly with folded hands,

Wow, such a great place to be. And amidst the hullabaloo of a weather, Rinpoche and his team brought us this informational and inspiring video and write-up. This is a place I will visit with my family next month and we hope the weather will be fine, then. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this with us.

  9. jp on Jul 7, 2013 at 12:33 pm

The Big Buddha statue was stunning! At sight it was both awesome and calming. It was my first time to Lantau Island. I will definitely go again.

The typhoon made the pilgrimage more exciting! hehe. We were holding on to our umbrellas and in the end we just walked around without umbrellas coz the wind was too strong.

Doing prayers and circumabulating there was great. It was very peaceful and calming to the mind although there was a typhoon. It reminded me of how turbulent samsara is, but as long as we keep our mind still and continue walking through the turbulence, we will still have peace and happiness.

Thank you Rinpoche for the pilgrimage! It’s been a while since Beng Kooi, Su Ming, Seng Piow and I went on a trip together with Rinpoche.

    Love always,
    JP

Thank you Rinpoche for working so tirelessly for us. Rinpoche was not feeling quite well at the tailbone area, the flight journey even though was not long but must have been difficult for Rinpoche, but Rinpoche was so willingly to take on the sufferings so that KFR will be able to get more sponsors and manifest very very soon. The short trip to HK was very exhausting, it was meeting after meeting. A big thank you to the team who were serving Rinpoche too, they were very efficient and made sure Rinpoche was well taken care of. They too, worked tirelessly.

We may not be close to Rinpoche to serve him, but by helping to look for sponsors, making sure Kechara Organisation’s operation is running smoothly we are already helping to take a bit of burden off Rinpoche’s shoulders. If you have not involved in making KFR a reality yet, it is still not too late to start!

May KFR manifest soonest, may all our Lama’s wishes come true.

I’m glad Rinpoche had a wonderful trip to Hong Kong. JP and the team had planned everything out really well to take care of Rinpoche. It is a wonderful place and I am glad to have my parents bring me there for vacation to visit the wonderful sights of Tian Tan Buddha and the scenery. I really liked the vegetarian food they had served in the canteen. I really enjoyed looking through the photos of your trip and they were taken really well. I remembered the place to have been very peaceful and the air was fresh as compared to the metropolitan city of Hong Kong down below from the mountain. I remember Rinpoche telling us that they built such a big statue that looks towards to sea to protect the sailors and that Rinpoche too wanted to build a statue just as big to bless people in Malaysia. I hope Rinpoche’s back heals and feels better soon.

Buddha statues are made to represent the Buddha virtue which the Buddha represents. Compassion, Wisdom, peace, harmony are just about a few qualities to mention which helps the perceiver to realize this potential in them and also to encourage them towards that direction.

Rinpoche loves Buddha images from since a young age. It is a very instinctual peaceful feeling when we see a Buddha image and it helps us to remind ourselves of the virtues which we wanna achieve on the path to ultimate happiness.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank You for taking me on this pilgrimage to Lantau Island to pay respect to the Big Buddha. I very much enjoyed Your talks and the prayers. It was a very spiritual and blessed experience for me, and it gave me a sense of calm just when I most needed it. I pray that I will have the privilege to go on future pilgrimages with Rinpoche! I will also remember the advice You gave me and I will follow them with an open heart.

To the Malaysian Group (SP, JP, SM, BK, BH, CK): you guys are such an inspiration to me! I salute you! Thank you for the time in HK.

Rinpoche and his entourage have made the most spectacular and significant prilgrimage to Lantau Island Tourist spot, Tian Tan Buddha (symbolishing Lord Sakyamuni Buddha), which takes the limelight of enlightenment in its attraction. Known as the World’s largest seated outdoor Buddhist statue, it sits calmly next to Po Lin Monastry. From within the vicinity of Po Lin Monastry, one would see the 268 stepsleading up to the seated Buddha’s statue, 482m atop the “Muk Yue Shan” which represents an outstanding unique and remarkable feat of engineering! Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the beautiful, inspiring and fascinating photos. The group looks extremely happy and full of excitement. It really looks an exciting good trip, but what wouldn,t with a bodisattva-Guru around! Om mani padme hum.

Thank You Rinpoche for the teaching. We should seize the golden opportunity of being in human form and being so close to the Dharma and Guru to do as much as possible to benefit others. We are not animal.
I would do whatever I can to help to setup KFR, I promised.

  24. Lim Han Nee on Jul 3, 2013 at 10:06 pm

Thank you, Rinpoche, for taking us as it were , through these lovely pictures and your most powerful Dharma teaching,on pilgrimage to the 34-meter Tien Tan Buddha on Lantau Island.

The storm, created by the typhoon, was a purification for those who were about to listen to a mind-shattering teaching that could change minds and hearts instantly. Buddhism,as a religion, is mainly a label. Only Buddhism, seen as Buddha’s teachings that recorded his discovery of something universal, something primordial, the truth and reality, will move and transform us to a level beyond self-centricism and suffering.

The only way to practice Dharma is to listen, absorb and let the truth penetrate the mind, and transform. Listening, we acquire knowledge. Applying this knowledge by practicing until it becomes a habituation leads us to wisdom.

When practice becomes real and earnest, and when one has transformed, the mind moves from its self-centric state to a state of wanting to benefit others. So, going on a pilgrimage to the Buddha on Lantau Island, is the reaffirmation of a mind of wanting to work hard for others and benefit others. Similarly, wanting to build KFR is wanting to benefit others, for KFR is for others.

I hope that Rinpoche has recovered from your tail-bone problem. i hope that the trip has fulfilled all of Rinpoche’s wishes and hopes in making the trip.

Just because we are working for a Dharma organisation, just because we have a teacher, we are close to our teacher or near our teacher, all this does not mean we are practising the Dharma if we do not listen or study the Dharma and apply it to transform our minds. We would just be going through the motions, which makes us no different from working on the outside. Perhaps this is why so many older students fall out from the Dharma even though they have been in the Dharma for many years. This would make perfect sense.

It is so nice to see Rinpoche enjoying Rinpoche’s Hong Kong trip and that it was a fruitful one. Everything Rinpoche does always somehow is for the Dharma and to benefit others, long and short term and for the bigger goal… to spread Lama Tsongkhapa’s lineage. The purpose of this life becomes so meaningful when there is a goal far greater than oneself.

Lantau Island’s Buddha sure is spectacular and a great pilgrimage trip I would like to visit one day. It would also be very interesting to experience the fast efficient culture of Hong Kong… Would be good to use is as a bench mark or as comparison to know how slow we are here, so we can improve. I guess this is what makes the Hongkies successful people, but I would not want to be cold and shrewd which often comes with this type of fast pace culture. Glad that we have Dharma infused in us so there is a good balance.

Lantau island Tian Tan Buddha is one of the must visit place in Hong Kong! It’s been a long while since I visited it, but I remember the vegetarian food at the Poh Lin temple was really delicious – an added bonus to the visit for sure! Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the details of your trip that brought back lots of fond memories I had for the place. I wish very much that all things go well with the movie deal and glad to learn about Rinpoche’s tailbone improvement.

Thank you Rinpoche for the wonderful teachings from Hong Kong. Rinpoche’s teachings is always simple yet deep.

Taking refuge, being or calling ourselves Buddhists, going for prayers, being a sponsor or even being near to our guru are wonderful. If our mind still think and react the same and selfish as before we take refuge, before we meet our guru and before we understand more about Dharma etc then these does not benefit us much. Understand that we should think differently, change our motives and place others’ benefit above ours. By thinking this way often enough, we will naturally be kind to others.

Lantau Island was one of my favourite visits when we were in Macau 3-4 years ago, we took a speedboat from Macau to Hong Kong, then we took MRT from Tung Chung(it’s the last stop after Disneyland) and finally we took the cable car from Tung Chung up to Ngong Ping. It was a very mesmerising day, we walked our way up to to the top, it was very tiring but worth it.
While we were walking around the place, there was a gallery under the Buddha statue, my mum saw Anita Mui’s memorial tablet in there as well. She was a very famous Hong Kong singer and actress who died of womb cancer.
I wish that I could visit Lantau Island again with my family next time, it’s a very nice and holy place.
    Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.

As KFR will also be having a huge Medicine Buddha on a hill and overlooking KFR! So happy to see that everyone else is enjoying the time with Rinpoche.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the wonderful pictures and the dharma talk in the video. I have never been to Hong Kong and now I would love to visit HK and pay homage to Tian Tan Buddha. I ‘ll visit Lantau island one day: soon I hope.

In the video, I could here the strong winds blowing in the background.Encountering the strong winds and rain, Rinpoche sat there holding on to his umbrella, delivering his talk about listening to dharma that can help us transform ourselves – inwardly and outwardly.

Listening to the dharma via the video is the fastest way for me to learn the dharma as the day goes by.

Thank you Rinpoche and May you be in good health to share the dharma with us.

Dear Rinpoche, thank you for sharing the pictures. What a beautiful place to renew vows. It’s been sometime since my last visit, at that time, we drove up and I remembered feeling so happy and peaceful at the top. The climb up is easy and gradual. Though a popular tourist spot, nevetheless it gives each Buddhist an opportunity to make offerings, prayers and circumbulations. This is what I have learned from my dear Rinpoche, that a temple is not just a physical structure or boundary and that we can do our practice and take the chance to do it when and wherever we can. I will certainly hold this and do it in my travels to come. Thank you.

The Tian Tan Buddha is very majestic and beautiful and all these wonderful people accompanying Rinpoche are so fortunate and blessed to be able to receive and renew their refuge vows in such a holy site as well as received dharma teachings directly from Rinpoche.

May this be a fruitful trip and that the movie project will be a success. Have a pleasant and good trip.

What I like most about this post is the fact that in the video, there’s a typhoon raging in the background. Whilst most people would be easily distracted by the strong winds, Rinpoche was totally focused on giving the teachings! Rinpoche never once turned to look at the trees, or look around him…it’s like Rinpoche is this strong tree standing strong against the external elements, through the power of Dharma…beautiful!

Thank you for sharing the wonderful photos of Rinpoche’s trip. I have visited the Lantau Buddha a few years ago and it is very beautiful. It is wonderful that Rinpoche could go on this pilgrimage with the very dedicated and lovely Ladrang Liaisons and crew. I’m glad Rinpoche’s tailbone is better and hope it doesn’t act up during Rinpoche’s trip. I hope all goes well for discussions on the movie also. That will be a very exciting project!

  48. MayOng on Jul 2, 2013 at 1:01 pm

May Rinpoche’s trip be fruitful for the coming movie and may your wishes and vision be fulfilled with the help of those in Hong Kong.

The Buddha and Lantau Island is spectacular. Even more impressive is the room where the holy Buddha relics are kept. They only allow a certain number of people to go in this room each time. I visited twice and plan to go again for pilgrimage. Have a good trip, keep safe and healthy.

Du Fu (712-770 AD), also known as Tu Fu, was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty, often considered one of the greatest alongside Li Bai. He was a poet-historian and a poet-sage, known for his realistic depictions of human suffering and reflections on the troubled times of his era. His poems, reflecting his personal experiences and the political instability of the time, have had a lasting impact on both Chinese and Japanese literary traditions.

H H Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo is by far one of the most popular and influential Gelug religious figures of the 20th Century. One of Phabongkha’s most important aristocratic students, Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom Tsering relationship to her teacher and his lineage teachings goes along way .She is famously remembered for is her unwavering devotion towards her guru, HH Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Yangdzom Tsering’s Shatra family were ancient sponsors and students of the Gelug tradition and had apparently been patrons of Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelug school. The life stories of Lady Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom as mentioned by Joona Repo is indeed inspiring. Looking at these pictures remained me of my first pilgrimage to Wu Tai San. With the blessings of our guru, we able to visit Wu Tai San a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site . In fact it never did come to my mind that I am fortunate given a chance to go as I am still very new then. Upon hearing about the pilgrimage I got myself register without much thought. The history and stories of Wu Tai San has inspired me to go there. Interesting the Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of China are closely connected to WuTai San. Wu Tai San located in Shanxi Province, China renowned as the home of Lord Manjushri the bodhisattva of wisdom, with different emanations of the bodhisattva residing on each of the five peaks. The area is dotted with over 50 temples and monasteries, many of which are historical and architecturally significant. Those temples built over 7 dynasties housing numerous Buddhist relics. Wutai Shan also offers stunning scenery, including snow-capped peaks, forests, and streams. Wu Tai San is one of the four Sacred Buddhist mountains of China, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wutai Shan was known to be a mystical and sacred site inhabited by divine spirits, accompanied by unusual events, such as miraculous light appearances at night.
We visited all the Holy sites, making offerings and doing prayers at each sites. We even have the opportunity to collect holy stones for future statue insertion or to keep on our altars. Times flies as our pilgrimage ended with so many stories to share with the rest.
Thank you Rinpoche and writes team sharing those pictures.

Padmasambhava, the Lotus-born Guru, also known as Guru Rinpoche is a legendary tantric Buddhist master who is widely revered in Tibetan Buddhism. He is seen as the second Buddha particularly within the Nyingma .He was a legendary Indian Buddhist mystic credited with introducing Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. As found in Buddhist scriptures Padmasambhava birth is often associated with legends and prophecies. Interesting…… Padmasambhava is depicted with eight manifestations, each reflecting a different aspect of his miraculous activities. Interesting article .

I wanted to take a moment to share a recent experience with you regarding my Instagram account. Unfortunately, my account was hacked, which was both frustrating and disappointing. Losing access to something that plays a significant role in my business and personal connections was incredibly stressful. What made the situation even more challenging was discovering that Meta does not have a dedicated support team to assist users facing account compromises. With so many people experiencing this issue daily, it’s alarming that their recovery process is not more accessible or efficient. After numerous failed attempts to recover my account through Meta’s standard procedures, I was fortunate enough to get in touch with a member of the Meta recovery department, @Rothsteincode on X (formerly Twitter), and via email at rothsteincode@gmail.com Their expertise and guidance were invaluable, and thanks to their assistance, I was able to regain full access to my account.
While I am incredibly grateful for their help, this experience has highlighted a major issue—Meta needs to implement better security measures and provide more reliable support for users dealing with these kinds of problems. The lack of direct customer support is unacceptable, considering how vital social media platforms have become for businesses and individuals alike.I wanted to share this with you in case you or anyone you know ever faces a similar issue. If you ever find yourself in this unfortunate situation, I highly recommend reaching out to @Rothsteincode for assistance. Hopefully, Meta will take action to improve their security policies and customer service in the near future.Thank you for taking the time to read this. A great history of a great yogi which I do enjoy reading , reading over it again and again. Jetsun Milarepa was a famous Tibetan siddha, known as a murderer when he was a young man. Who later turning to Buddhism and becoming a highly accomplished Buddhist disciple. Generally considered as one of Tibet’s most famous yogis and spiritual poets, whose teachings are known among several schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa’s story is one of struggle, anguish, resolve, and triumph all of which make him recognizably. Practicing these teachings for many years in isolated mountain retreats in caves such as caves hidden deep in the mountains of Tsum Valley. That’s where Milarepa attained enlightenment and gained fame for his incredible perseverance in practice and for his spontaneous songs of realisation. Milarepa is said to be the first to achieve the state of Vajradhara in one lifetime. That’s incredible.

Visiting Tibet, holy Gaden Monastery is everyone dream and a once life time. Of course if we have the means to visit again will be great. End of December 2008 and early January 2009 our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche with a small group students visited Tibet. Thousands of pilgrims, visitors and tourists around the world have visited this incredible holy land for the last 600 years. Tsem Rinpoche visited Tibet for the first time with an oxygen tank. I am fortunate to visit this holy place with my Dharma brothers and sisters years back.
With our Guru blessing we went without any without any hitch. Visited most of the monasteries and could feel the powerful energies there. Looking at those pictures in this blog reminds me of trip there.

Interesting….. a ground breaking documentary by world BBC where everyone should watch. BBC did mentioned and documented that Jesus was a Buddhist monk and that he had spent some years in India. I would not know about this till I came across this blog. Many people most probably too. Interesting watch one should not miss. Jesus was a religious leader revered in Christianity, one of the world’s major religions. He is regarded by most Christians as the Incarnation of God. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus was well acquainted with Buddhism. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus knew about Buddhism. Other evidence, while perhaps apocryphal, indicates that he spent most of his so-called lost years outside Judea, possibly in Kashmir to study Buddhism exclusively.

The Great Buddhas of Bamiyan were two monumental Buddhist statues built around 600 CE. A holy site for Buddhists on the Silk Road, historically a caravan route linking the markets of China with those of the Western world. The two most prominent statues were the giant standing sculptures of the Buddhas .It was the site of several Buddhist monasteries where monks at the monasteries lived as hermits. It was until in 2001, both statues were destroyed by the Taliban . Before being blown up in 2001, they were the largest examples of standing Buddha carvings in the world .Buddhism was eliminated in Afghanistan by the 13th century during the Mongol conquests. Sadly all statues depicting humans in Afghanistan was destroyed. They were perhaps the most famous cultural landmarks of the region, and the site was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Despite the Buddhas’s destruction, the ruins continue to be a popular culture landmark, where many locals, pilgrims and tourist visit the site.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting blog.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
