Dear friends,

A friend of mine has been ill. He works within Kechara and is a very kind person. He has many friends who wishes to do practices, pujas, retreats and dedications to send him good energy in order to heal. So why not direct those good intentions into a Medicine Buddha practice.

I visited Turkey Swamp last week here in New Jersey and decided to give a talk on Medicine Buddha practice. I use to visit Turkey Swamp as a child and do meditations here. It use to take me around 2.5-3 hours by bicycle to pedal to Turkey Swamp.

This practice is dedicated for my friend, but anyone can do this practice for themselves. It is the same procedure. They can also do this sacred practice in dedication for others. It’s wonderful for animals as well.

I have recorded a clear video explaining this practice and how to go about it. Kindly watch the video to learn about this sacred Medicine Buddha practice. I wish you all good luck and long life. Health too. May your obstacles be cleared.

We walked around this area as I have not been back since 30 years. So recording this teaching here has special significance for myself.

Sacred Medicine Buddha practice is very powerful and beneficial . We are very fortunate to receive this teachings from Rinpoche. It helps us in many ways such as clearing any problems along our spiritual path, good for healing our body, mind, even animals , bless the land, environment in place where there is a lot of earthquakes and so forth. Precisely helps in our medical and health problems internal and externally. May Paul have a speedy recovery.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing without any initiation .

In the sport of correct views,
all that is correct is just a view,
    without permanence or substance.
As long as we hold onto views,
    our sufferings are gathered
    to be experienced without end.

Without the strong methods of emptiness
    and compassion, bereft of merit,
    we sink deeper without respite.
To arise from this samsara is but
a dreamscape on the deluded mind.
Therefore seek the guru, who confers the yidam,
hold your vows and fixate on liberation
free of new creations. Free of new experiences as
    there are none.

I was walking past a second hand shop on Western Ave selling old things. They had a Japanese-style clay Buddha which was beige in colour on the floor, holding the door open. I thought the shopkeeper would collect a lot of negative karma without knowing if he kept such a holy item on the floor as a doorstop. So I went in to talk to him, but he didn’t look like he wanted to talk or that he even cared. So I asked him the price and he said US$5. I purchased it so he did not collect more negative karma. I was 17 years old and that was in 1982.

I escorted my new Buddha home and washed it lightly and wiped it. I placed it on my altar and was happy with the Buddha. I would do my meditations, prayers, sadhanas, mantras and prostrations in front of this shrine daily. When I left for India in 1987, I could not bring this Buddha along and gave it to a friend. It was a nice size and I made offerings to this Buddha for many years in Los Angeles. In front of the Buddha I placed His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s photo. I remember I was so relieved that the price was affordable. But US$5 that time was still expensive for me but worth it I thought. But I was happy to have brought the Buddha home. Tsem Rinpoche

I have seen this teaching in the past. Noteworthy is Rinpoche’s compassion and care for his student Paul. There was another blog post on him personally attending to Paul as Paul laid on his bed. I am glad Paul has overcome his sickness due to his faith in his Rinpoche. Your compassion is truly immense Rinpoche. I wish you and your students all the best forever and ever Rinpoche.

    Dear Rinpoche

Thank you for this powerful & simple prayer of Medicine Buddha. As Rinpoche explained, this prayer is very effective to blessed the environment and all beings :-

    For personal well being :-
    1) good for our health
    2) purifying our karma and preventing karma from manifesting diseases, illness
    3) lessening our karma that will delay illness or cure the disease
    4) protection for good health

    For the environment
    1) calm & eliminate natural disaster places
    2) for animals to have good human rebirth to practice Dharma

Overall it is developed specifically to clear obstacles so that we can learn & practice the Dharma and to be enlightened. Its is good for calming and healing the mind and environment.

I am very thankful to Eric KK Siow of KP, Sunway who introduced me Su Ming who have guided Gary to carry-out Setrap Puja (a prayer to Dharma Protector) and Menlha Puja (a prayer to Medicine Buddha) during a serious and unknown health condition. Its been 4 years and his condition is now under controlled.

I sincerely thank Rinpoche for providing each and everyone the necessary purification method to overcome our daily problems, our obstacles, our illness and also our suffering during the illness or death of our loved ones. With Rinpoche’s blessing, Paul Yap will always received the blessings, prayers & protection of medicine Buddha to recover swiftly and have good health.

Once again, thank you Rinpoche for your profound teachings at this beautiful enchanting lake of Turkey Swamp. May this powerful Medicine Buddha prayer reached all beings that they receive the Dharma which is the medicine to alleviate our suffering. May the development of Medicine Buddha at Kechara Forest Retreat manifest quickly for the sake of all beings.

Wish Rinpoche the best of health and continue to teach and guide all beings to the path of Enlightenment.

    With folded hands
    Rena

Thank you Rinpoche for your kind compassion to give us a talk on Medicine Buddha, on how to do one, what are the benefits and Rinpoche’s Generous dedication and wish for Paul Yap’s recovery. I really believe in Rinpoche sincere and strong belief that Medicine Buddha Practice and mantra truly works and is super beneficial to all living beings around us as well as the person that is dedicated to. From Rinpoche’s story, it must’ve been really funny to see a line of ducks following Rinpoche after finishing the prayer haha. I am a practicing vegetarian and at times I may be offered a situation to eat meat where it may be offensive to the person I am receiving it from. Learning this mantra now would help me go through it, if the situation cannot be avoided. Thank you for sharing this teaching Rinpoche.

Thank you Rinpoche for the teaching of Medicine Buddha Sadhana.

I remember Rinpoche said before, Rinpoche does not like to teach, but because of Rinpoche promised to his guru, he will teach. Even Rinpoche is far away in USA, Rinpoche still record and teach. Rinpoche always wanted to benefit every single beings that come into his life.

With this teaching being made available online, many people will definitely be beneficial from it. Now is our turn to do it and dedicate to Paul’s recovery so that he can continue to serve the Dharma which this is also his great wish.

    Thanks Rinpoche for the sharing.

Before this i thought Medicine Buddha practice can only heal us from illness or disease. After watching the video, i only know that there are so many benefits practicing Medicine Buddha.

I personally have not attend any weekly Medicine Buddha Puja at Kechara House, but because of volunteering in Kechara Puja House, i had chance to join the puja for many times.

Recently, i have chance to invite back a Medicine Buddha statue which is beyond my expectation.

I am very happy to have the statue and wish that Medicine Buddha will benefit more sentient beings.

    Thanks again.

Medicine Buddha mantra helps both the living and those who have passed away. Purifies a lot of heavy karma it is also able to benefit beings who have died for hundeeds of years.Reciting the mantra and blowing on the bones helps the being.

    Wow Rinpoche,

This is such a wonderful and meaningful place to be giving this wonderful teaching. I do remember a story that Rinpoche told once that when Rinpoche prayed to the Medicine Buddha statue, you could stop the rain. I thought that was incredible. I think Medicine Buddha mantra and practice is powerful way to bless the sick, dying and wandering animals. I guess its a great mantra to recite and bless meat but I hardly do that nowadays as i hardly come across meat these days.

I think Medicine Buddha puja is one of the most popular pujas as there are always people who are sick or dying. That is crucial because this puja is real effective and powerful. And the wonderful thing is that this puja is simple and can be done by just about anybody. However, I would like to take time to learn up the actual puja in Tibetan. Lovely… Thank you Rinpoche for sharing an explanation on its meaning.

Thank you, Rinpoche, for this teaching on the Medicine Buddha sadhana and its many benefits.

I believe very strongly in the power of the Medicine Buddha sadhana and mantra. Recently, Zoey, one of my cats, fell and hurt her head. Immediately after that fall, she behaved as though she was suffering from some brain damage. She became still and altogether unlike her previous very energetic lively self and she wasn’t eating. The vet said her eyes didn’t show any response to a certain test he had conducted. He told us to be prepared for the worst(that she could become a ‘vegetable’ and would have to be fed using a drip then), and asked us to leave her with him for a few days.

During those few days, I prayed to Medicine Buddha, and had a Medicine Buddha puja done for her by the KH Puja House. When my husband and I went to check on her a couple of days later, the doctor reported that she was back to normal and was behaving in a normal way. How powerful the Medicine Buddha sadhana and mantra are in purifying the karma of my Joey !

This place was incredibly idyllic and magical. The autumn colours were just mesmerizing and the waters reflecting the dusk was just divine. It is no wonder Rinpoche has such fond memories of this place.

  24. Julia Tan on Nov 7, 2013 at 5:43 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,

Very happy to see Rinpoche in the video. Thank you Rinpoche for the sacred Medicine Buddha Teachings with beautiful scene from Turkey Swamp. To be born as a human is rare. To have a healthy body is even more rare. By having a heathy body we can do lots of Dharma work. But our body is so fragile and easily get sick and damage especially living in this hectic and stressful city. We need Medicine Buddha Practice badly, more so a place that can give us not only healthy living but calm and relax our mind. Through Rinpoche’s kindness, a place like Kechara Forest Retreat is manifested in order to have a place for retreat, meditation, puja, chemical free vegetable and good quality air to breath.

Paul has been working and having meetings non stop even when he can’t sit up need not mention about walking. He will get well soon with Rinpoche’s prayers and blessings and all the Medicine Buddha pujas that has been done for him.

    Much care and prayers,
    Julia

  27. Joy on Nov 5, 2013 at 6:05 pm

What beautiful teaching on a beautiful setting. Perfect for the practice! May all those who needs healing be benefited from this wonderful healing practice.

When you think about it… Buddha is really “something”… He’s so wise to give and present to us so many different teachings, 108 volumes of it in fact (that’s a lot of bibles) and each focusing on different problems/neurosis we humans have on this planet earth and beyond I’m sure! I have not encountered any other religion or spiritual practice that has this type of versatility, wisdom and the vastness where by each and every single one has an antidote that deals immediately, directly with one’s problems and solves it at the root cause if we trully serious practice it. And thanks to spiritual masters/teachers like Tsem Rinpoche who has learned it, master it, preserved the teachings and now passes it on to others.

This is why it is so important to always help the teachers/Lama, without them we would never receive these precious teachings such as this one we are receiving now. Without the Lama there is No Dharma. Hence making offering to the Guru/Sangha is of the highest form of offering. It is more powerful and meritorious than offering to a Buddha statue. Why cos the Buddha statue cannot give you teachings and transmission directly. Hence… Help one, help many http://vajrasecrets.com/offerings/offerings-to-tsem-rinpoche/urgent-help-rinpoche-to-benefit-more-people.html

How really compassionate, caring and concern Rinpoche truly is! Even when he returned back to Turkey Swamp at New Jersey, he took the opportunity to do a “Medicine Buddha’s practice” for a good friend who is sick, to be healed. It seemed that he had not been back here since 30 years ago, and doing and recording this Teaching of Medicine Buddha practice has a special significance for Rinpoche. From the description of the favourable conditions of things at Turkey Swamp at that time seem to be perfect for Rinpoche’s practice. May Rinpoche continues to enjoy all such successes for all his future wishes. Om mani padme hung!

If by any chance you’d have time in future, it’d be nice to read or listen about importance of sleep in buddhist practice – how to make it beneficial, how to use this natural phenomena to deepen own spiritual practice.

The term Concert of Names of Manjushri is a tantric text within Tibetan Buddhism, describing the various names and qualities of the bodhisattva Manjushri. Its usually recited and often memorized by practitioners in Buddhist ceremonies The text consists of verses that praise and invoke the qualities of Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom and knowledge. By just chanting the names of Manjushri, bring numerous benefits, primarily focused on enhancing wisdom, memory, and clarity of mind. Some traditions associate the practice with protection from negative influences, such as black magic, sickness, and negative karma.
Thank you Rinpoche for introducing this powerful practice to us at Kechara Forest Retreat , Bentong, Pahang.

The Jonang lineage traces its roots back to the 12th century, the profound teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni. Interesting read of the History of Jonang lineage and how it converted to Gelug and how Kalachakra maintain in Gelug until today. The Jonang lineage is a school of Tibetan Buddhism that emphasizes the Kalachakra Tantra. It originated in Tibet, though suppressed in the 17th century, the Jonang tradition persevered in remote regions of Tibet and is now experiencing a revival. The Jonang lineage offers a unique perspective on Buddhist philosophy and practice, influencing other Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing about this profound lineage.

Since escaping from China in 1959, Tibetans refugees settled down in different parts of Indian. The Tibetan leadership and those in exile were given land, opportunities, education and aid, and so many Western charities help them. The Indian government under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru was kind enough and they could do whatever they like. Tibetan settlements in South India have been severely affected by a regional drought. In Tibetian Buddhism accomplished masters could influence the weather. As long as practitioners accomplished in their practices, they had guru devotion and pure samaya with their teachers, it could be done. Many witnesses including our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche saw the masters could stop the rains. The prayers and rituals have not been effective as they gave up their commitments to their lineage lamas, related to their Dorje Shugden practice. Moreover they have lost faith in great master and gurus as they practise Dorje Shugden. They have creates very heavy negative karma. Great masters could stop the rains and making it rain and save the harvest. For the sake of the people who are suffering from horrendous drought, those samaya must be repaired practitioners must all be united again and not discriminate each others due to their Dorje Shugden practice. The Tibetan government should also repair this samaya. Interesting read .
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this .

Manjushri is one of the most important figures in Mahayana Buddhism, and is considered a patron deity of wisdom and learning. By practicing Manjushri our wisdom can enhance and improve significantly. Helps help us with our memory.
Through Rinpoche’s sponsorship at Gaden Sharte Monastery many monks had benefited. Rejoice to them receiving the initiation .Sponsoring the Dharma, which refers to supporting the teachings and practices of Buddhism, is considered a meritorious act in Buddhism. Acts of generosity and support for the Dharma are believed to generate positive karma, leading to positive consequences in this life and future lives.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing and explaining it.

David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter and actor and was once a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner. Regarded as among the most influential musicians of the 20th century . The English singer, songwriter and actor David Bowie died at his Lafayette Street home in New York City but in his will he requested his ashes to be spread according to the Buddhist rituals of Bali, Indonesia. He must been to Bali and fall for the beauty of Buddhism and culture of Bali to choose BUDDHIST ritual upon his death. David Bowie made a conscious choice that made perfect sense, not allowing fans and media to focus on his body and his death.

HORRIFYING, feeling sad after watching the video. The way or rather methods of slaughtering of pigs at slaughter house is indeed cruel. Just like human beings, they do feel pain and fear to be slaughter. No living beings would choose to die in pain or a painful death. Hopefully those methods have since been changed to minimize animal suffering. Stop consuming meat and choosing to go meatless or on vegetarian is the best choice.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this to bring awareness of how those poor pigs suffer before been killed.

Hoichi the Earless is the name of a well-known figure from Japanese folklore. His story is well known in Japan. Some centuries ago there lived at Akamagaséki a blind man named Hoichi, who was famed for his skill in recitation and in playing upon the biwa. According to legend, Hoichi was a blind minstrel with an amazing gift for the biwa (a loquat-shaped Japanese lute). Despite his talents, Hoichi was very poor and was forced to live at Amidaji Temple under the care of a friendly priest. There’s an interesting stories behind how he lost his ear to the Samurai and the priest wrote kanji characters all over Hoichi’s body rendered him invisible to the samurai. Hoichi’s ordeal had freed him from the spirit’s power, and he went on to recover from his wounds and become a famous musician. His story become well known and had it appearing in the books as well as in film.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Such a meaningful song or rather deep poem, will be wonderful if I could understand enough some of those words, its more of a deep Dharma teaching to me. HH the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche is an erudite, and highly attained lama. Millions of Gelug practitioners from all over monasteries view H H the Gaden Tripa as the supreme leader of their lineage. H H the Gaden Tripa gave a three-day teaching on the sacred Highest Anuttarayoga Tantra practice of Vajrayogini at his Dharma centre in France, Thar Deu Ling. A very special text containing teachings composed by HH Gaden Trisur Rinpoche were also distributed. Incredible , HH Gaden Trisur Rinpoche continue giving teachings at the advanced age of 92. Haven writen a book about the Vajrayogini practice shows us the importance of this practice in this day and age. Merely by reciting her mantra daily without break can gain spiritual attainments, perceive her holy form, and even ascend to her pure land — Kechara Paradise.
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound knowledge about Vajrayogini

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. One of the places everyone should visit- https://bit.ly/2VgsHhK

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
