H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s 48th Birthday

Every 24th October, Kecharians and our friends have the merit to celebrate our beloved Guru H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s birthday. 48 years ago, Rinpoche was born in Taiwan to a Tibetan father and a Mongolian princess mother (you can read more about Rinpoche’s biography here or in this book!). After much hardship and the many challenges Rinpoche has undertaken to bring Dharma to Malaysia and the rest of the world, this year we had the privilege of celebrating Rinpoche’s birthday in a peaceful environment of our very own retreat land, Kechara Forest Retreat (KFR).

A Guru’s birthday is not quite like any other. It is the day that our Guru chose to be reborn into our realm, in order to turn the wheel of Dharma for all sentient beings. For those who view their teachers as an enlightened Being, and who view their teacher’s actions as that of an enlightened Being’s, it means the teacher’s birthday is one of the most important days for them. For them, the Guru’s birthday is viewed as an opportunity to accumulate immeasurable merits for their teacher’s long life, for their own practice and for the success of their organisation’s endeavours.

Rinpoche’s birthday celebration started at 10 am, when many of Rinpoche’s students gathered in front of Wisdom Hall’s iconic outdoor Lama Tsongkhapa statue to participate in the animal liberation activity. Under the guidance of Pastor Adeline, Rinpoche’s students recited the Medicine Buddha mantra for over 45 minutes to bless the 350 birds before setting them free.

KFR for the remainder of the day was a bustling hive of activity because this year, we had many more reasons to celebrate 24th October. Not only was the day a joyous occasion for Rinpoche’s students, but it was also particularly special for one of Rinpoche’s long time students and friend, Datuk Eric Tan. Having just been awarded the title of Datuk Wira earlier in the day, Datuk Wira Eric also celebrated the expansion of his family by witnessing the wedding blessing of his eldest son, Edwin Tan.

It was the first such blessing to take place on our holy land. The bride and groom recited prayers to Tara, requesting her blessings for their union. Holding hands under the gaze of Shakyamuni, they then recited specially prepared wedding vows to one another, promising, “I will be faithful to you. I will support you in all difficulties. I will improve my weak points for you. I will defend you. I will respect your beliefs. I will share what I have with you. I make this promise to you.

As the wedding took place in Wisdom Hall, guests for Rinpoche’s birthday took the opportunity to tour KFR. Nearly 500 students attended Rinpoche’s birthday, many of them visiting KFR for the first time. Our newly ordained pastors were kept busy as they guided the visitors around our retreat land, explaining Rinpoche’s vision for providing Malaysians with a place to retreat, relax and unwind from stressful city life. Needless to say, many of the guests were impressed by how much KFR has changed from the time we acquired the land last year.

After the tour, everyone made their way to Dukkar Apartments where dinner was served by Kechara Oasis. After a hearty vegetarian meal, guests adjourned to Wisdom Hall to participate in the Lama Chopa Puja. Led by Pastor Chia Song Peng and Pastor JJ Chong, Kecharians requested the blessings of our lineage lamas for our Guru’s long life. The prayers were also dedicated towards the accumulation of merits for us to receive Rinpoche’s Dharma teachings and to request for the success of Rinpoche’s activities.

It was a day like what Rinpoche has always worked for – an event held on our land, in our buildings, with pujas and blessings done by our local Malaysians, and catered for by our own vegetarian restaurant. It is this vision that is slowly coming to life in Kechara Forest Retreat, a place where Malaysians will be able to do something to help other Malaysians. Thus on behalf of all Kecharians, we wish Rinpoche a very happy birthday and offer our gratitude to Rinpoche for 48 years of benefiting sentient beings. May we have the merits for Rinpoche to remain long with us, for all of Rinpoche’s visions to materialise and for us to always be able to serve our lama.

Its was such a wonderful and auspicious day to have seen kechara forest retreat filled with so many visitors and students coming together for the purpose of our Guru’s Birthday. It was fun and it felt like such positive energy filled the whole place where everyone was learning and praying together for our Guru’s Long Life. I had missed the releasing pf the birds but i’m glad to see so many people attended the ceremony and its a huge relief to see so many birds set free back into nature. I would like to thank Rinpoche for giving us kechara forest retreat, a place where everyone would be able to make wishes and pray together in harmony. Every day kechara forest retreat is growing and everyday more visitors are coming from all over the world. I hope Rinpoche is happy and feeling well.

This is the 1st major event organised by Kechara in Kechara Forest Retreat, Chamang, Bentong to coincide with Tsem Rinpoche’s birthday. We had animal liberation, a wedding blessing ceremony, short tours of the Manjuhri Hill, Wisdom Hall and Dukkar apartments for first time guests who came from afar.

The event was attended by 400 over guests and refreshments were prepared for them before the event. Hard working staff planned this event out meticulously to ensure safety, security and car parks were taken into consideration. In all, the event was a good one for everyone who took part. May Tsem Rinpoche have long life and good health to continue turning the wheel of dharma to benefit all. Happy Birthday!

Looking back celebrating your birthday last year at Kechara House gompa at SumwayMas, I am very grateful that this year we can have it at Wisdom Hall at Kechara Forest Retreat. This year we have had the privilege to celebrate Rinpoche’s birthday at “Kechara Forest Retreat Land”. Students started gathering at 10am in front of Wisdom Hall’s iconic outdoor Lama Tsongkhapa’s statue for Animals Liberation, and recitation of Medicine Buddha’s mantra to bless the release of 350 Birds under the guidance of Pastor Adeline. Activity for the day also included particular special occasion of the wedding’s blessing of Datuk Eric Tan’s son (Edwin Tan), representating the first blessing of such occasion to happen on Kechara’s holy land! The day was full of joy and satisfaction, with the vision that our Kechara’s dream is slowly and steadfastly materialising to reality to benefit all beings. May Rinpoche have a long and healthy life always to guide us through in benefitting all sentient beings! Om mani padme hung.

It was a hive of activities on the 24 October when Kecharians, friends and family members gathered at Kechara Forest Retreat (KFR).

It was the first time we celebrated our Guru’s birthday there; first time we had an animal liberation day; and also the first time a wedding blessing was conducted there.

So it turned out we were there to celebrate a day of many first’s.

  26. Pastor Han Nee on Oct 27, 2013 at 4:42 pm

Kechara Forest Retreat burst into life in an explosion of activities to celebrate the 48th Birthday of Tsem Rinpoche, Spiritual Guide and founder of Kechara.

The day started with the liberation of 350 birds. From then on in and around Wisdom hall and Dukkar Apartments were crowds of people walking back and forth. There was the wedding blessing ceremony of Dato Wira Eric Tan’s elder son, Edwin , and Elaine.

In the afternoon, groups of people joined in a continuous series of tours of KFR. Many were visiting KFR for the first time.

In the evening, 400 students joined in a long-life Lama Chopa puja for Rinpoche.

May Kechara Forest Retreat continue to grow and develop into what has been envisioned for it by Rinpoche – a place of peace, healing, retreat and learning(especially spiritual retreat and learning) for all from around the world.

All the pastors, committee and volunteer did a fantastic job to make the event a success.A big”Thank you” to them.
May we be able to celebrate our Rinpoche next Birthday at the KFR with the vision of our Rinpoche completed as intended.
Wishing a Happy Birthday to Rinpoche, may he have a long life to turn the wheel of Dharma.

  28. Beatrix Ooi on Oct 27, 2013 at 1:05 am

I was very fortunate to be able to attend and witness the celebration, Kecharians put in a lot of time and efforts to make the event a success. I’ve read about Pastor Jean Ai’s blog on why Rinpoche doesn’t like birthday celebrations, and I agree with that. I haven’t been celebrating my birthday for 2 years, I have to admit that I really do not like the feeling of people gathering around me and sing me happy birthday song. And I think it is a day where I can do more good deeds and dedicate to my parents cause they went through a lot of hard times when I was still in my mother’s stomach.

Gathering and enjoying acceptance of your parents to give a birth to you, blessing of meeting the dharma and blessing of living 48 years, helping many sentient beings. On cold winter’s night in New York City, Tsem Rinpoche saw a homeless man and dog. Moved by his plight, Rinpoche bought warm food for the man and his dog, as well as gloves and other cold weather gear and personal care items. Rinpoche even gave the man his personal rosary beads, which Rinpoche has used to make many daily prayers. By by the person having it, it will bless him tremendously…

Some short videos do not need a lot of explanation. This is one of them.

This video and the people involved touched me to the core. People who go out of their way to make life better for another living being are the greatest minds to walk the earth. People who care and do their best to make a difference are people who are really using their human potential for something with meaning. People who actually do something.

Please watch this video and share with others. Why share? Because you care enough to create awareness which will lead to understanding and eradication of these types of unnecessary sufferings. It’s the least you and I can do is to create awareness.

Have compassion. Practice in life what you admire in conversation-compassion.

Well its truly a very effective practice and should be included in our daily sahdana. A effective way to purify our negative karma, which has accumulated over the years. With the proper practice and visualization we could transform what is negative and turning them into sublime offerings. It will then allow Dorje Shugden to help us further through the creation of conducive conditions for Dharma practice and the elimination of obstacles.
Thanks Rinpoche and Pastor David for this well explained sharing.

Beautiful pictures of H.E Zava Damdin Rinpoche, an erudite Mongolian Buddhist master conferring the initiation of Yamantaka and Dorje Shugden to a crowd of 10,000 people. He was recognised as the reincarnation of one of the greatest Buddhist masters, yogis, healers, scholars and mahasiddhas in Mongolia. A great scholar within the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, he wrote numerous volumes of philosophic writings which are still been used till today. Interesting read of a GREAT Lama.
    Thank you for this sharing

Lama Thubten Phurbu is truly an incredible , respected Gelug high Lama with his incredible achievements and accomplishments. Having up hold the lineage of Tsongkhapa and the practice of Dorje Shugden . He has done so much speaking up on the ban on Dorje Shugden and has contributed many beneficial projects in Tibet and China. Lama Thubten Phurbu is outspoken about Dorje Shugden and spreading Shugden’s practice and Tsongkhapa’s lineage to as many as to the West, India and Nepal .
Lama Thubten Phurbu have done much more for the Tibetan people than the CTA have. He travels occasionally to give teachings to preserve these precious lineages for the future. While the CTA is opposing the Chinese and creating mistrust, Lama Thubten Phurbu is building trust with the Chinese government while at the same time upholding the greater welfare of all Tibetans. Wow… Lama Thubten Phurbu has even compiled many prayer texts for the benefits of all sentient beings. Interesting read.
    Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for the sharing, some people love to senses excitement through supernatural power. I have seen the video it scary because it is true from experience. When it come for movies it is interesting to understand how curious our mind works.

From my experiences I have realized that the feeling of terror is the special aspect, unexpected, suspense and the surprise. Usually horror movies often teach us how to protect, to overcome difficult situation, to control the fear, prayer and meditation. The smart and brave characters of a person can be seen with a lot of much struggle.

I enjoyed this article, it made me to recall some of my doubt and fear memories during my young days.

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this special rare Buddha with us. Enlightened beings are very compassionate to have manifested in various forms for various purposes for us to get blessings. This Buddha is manifested specifically for us to curb with our own laziness.

According to Rinpoche, laziness comes in various forms and not just the superficial laziness that we can easily identify. There are some form of laziness is much more ingrained in us and it may manifest into some other behaviours.

This afternoon, Tsem Rinpoche, Ladrang Liaison Pastor Loh Seng Piow, Beng Kooi, Fat Monk, and Monlam were in a fish shop in Cheras to look for some fishes for the Ladrang’s pond.

Rinpoche took the group for a meal in a restaurant nearby. While in the restaurant, Rinpoche saw many fishes in 2 crowded glass tanks, and Rinpoche couldn’t bear it as Rinpoche knew the fate of these fishes – they will take turn to be on dinner plates throughout the Chinese New Year period. The fishes were huge, about 8 or 9 inches long and all of them will be gone in a few days!

After some negotiation, Fat Monk convinced the restaurant owner to sell the fishes at a reduced price. The owner also gave us all their eels free, knowing that we bought the fishes to be liberated. We also took all the frogs in the restaurant. They were so kind that they told us to liberate the fishes fast and come back to pay later or the next day! They let us go without any payment! I think they were touched by Rinpoche’s act of kindness and reciprocated. No restaurant will let go of their fishes easily during this period as supply of fishes are scarce, and the festive season is the peak period to make maximum profit.

This is so horrible, the way how the horse is being slaughtered! It is not humane at all. Imagine the fear the horse has to go through before its last moment.

How can we still enjoy our meat dishes knowing how much pain the animals have to suffer? We use horses for horse racing when they are still young and strong. When they are older, we kill them for their meat. This is life but we are treating them like an object.

If we want a more peaceful world, less violence, we have to learn to generate compassion. One of the ways to develop our compassion is to stop eating meat because we don’t want animals to suffer. If we can afford and have time, we can also consider adopting animals from the shelters. As the demand for meat decreases, there will be less killing.

Chinese activists recently stood up to dog meat traders and rescued 900 dogs bound for slaughter for human consumption. Many of the dogs were clearly stolen family pets, even wearing tags and collars: Huskies, German Shepherds, Poodles and the like, many extremely ill and dying from the slave ship like conditions of the truck and cages. One woman found her lost Golden Retriever on the truck, but was told she could not take him home unless she paid off the trader. The activists were beaten and after a 50 hour standoff finally rescued all of the dogs. However, by that time some dogs had died and the activists were forced to bury them at the scene.

The ‘Ocean Drover’ is regarded by the live export industry as being one of the ‘best’ vessels on the water. But right now, animals confined within it are suffering and dying.

After breaking down four weeks ago, just days after leaving Australia, the ship has been travelling at a reduced speed – extending an already long and arduous journey for the 48,000 sheep and cattle on board. On Friday it was revealed that the Ocean Drover had to make an emergency stop near Djibouti, Africa, after running low on feed for the animals, and now the exporter has confirmed the mounting deaths on board – still days from their final destination. One can only imagine what the surviving animals are enduring.

The exporter has expressed dismay at not achieving their usual ‘success rate’ but this is an industry that judges ‘success’ by the number of animals still standing at the end of a voyage. Sheep suffer and die on every live export ship that leaves Australia and their deaths are considered just a routine part of doing business. The animals onboard the Ocean Drover may be beyond our help. But don’t let their suffering be in vain – your MP needs to hear their story. Please take 2 minutes to call your Federal Member TODAY to express your utter dismay at yet another live export tragedy.

Hummingbirds are easy to attract to a backyard garden, a cinch to keep well fed, and a joy to watch. These sparkling jewels of sum at mer are easy to love.

But if you don’t take proper care to provide healthy nectar and clean feeders, they’re also an easy bird to love to death.

Hummingbird feeders must be kept clean and free from mold and fungus, or the tiny hum-buzzers you so enjoy could develop a serious and deadly fungus infection. This infection causes the tongue to swell, making it impossible for the bird to feed.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
