H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s 48th Birthday

Every 24th October, Kecharians and our friends have the merit to celebrate our beloved Guru H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s birthday. 48 years ago, Rinpoche was born in Taiwan to a Tibetan father and a Mongolian princess mother (you can read more about Rinpoche’s biography here or in this book!). After much hardship and the many challenges Rinpoche has undertaken to bring Dharma to Malaysia and the rest of the world, this year we had the privilege of celebrating Rinpoche’s birthday in a peaceful environment of our very own retreat land, Kechara Forest Retreat (KFR).

A Guru’s birthday is not quite like any other. It is the day that our Guru chose to be reborn into our realm, in order to turn the wheel of Dharma for all sentient beings. For those who view their teachers as an enlightened Being, and who view their teacher’s actions as that of an enlightened Being’s, it means the teacher’s birthday is one of the most important days for them. For them, the Guru’s birthday is viewed as an opportunity to accumulate immeasurable merits for their teacher’s long life, for their own practice and for the success of their organisation’s endeavours.

Rinpoche’s birthday celebration started at 10 am, when many of Rinpoche’s students gathered in front of Wisdom Hall’s iconic outdoor Lama Tsongkhapa statue to participate in the animal liberation activity. Under the guidance of Pastor Adeline, Rinpoche’s students recited the Medicine Buddha mantra for over 45 minutes to bless the 350 birds before setting them free.

KFR for the remainder of the day was a bustling hive of activity because this year, we had many more reasons to celebrate 24th October. Not only was the day a joyous occasion for Rinpoche’s students, but it was also particularly special for one of Rinpoche’s long time students and friend, Datuk Eric Tan. Having just been awarded the title of Datuk Wira earlier in the day, Datuk Wira Eric also celebrated the expansion of his family by witnessing the wedding blessing of his eldest son, Edwin Tan.

It was the first such blessing to take place on our holy land. The bride and groom recited prayers to Tara, requesting her blessings for their union. Holding hands under the gaze of Shakyamuni, they then recited specially prepared wedding vows to one another, promising, “I will be faithful to you. I will support you in all difficulties. I will improve my weak points for you. I will defend you. I will respect your beliefs. I will share what I have with you. I make this promise to you.

As the wedding took place in Wisdom Hall, guests for Rinpoche’s birthday took the opportunity to tour KFR. Nearly 500 students attended Rinpoche’s birthday, many of them visiting KFR for the first time. Our newly ordained pastors were kept busy as they guided the visitors around our retreat land, explaining Rinpoche’s vision for providing Malaysians with a place to retreat, relax and unwind from stressful city life. Needless to say, many of the guests were impressed by how much KFR has changed from the time we acquired the land last year.

After the tour, everyone made their way to Dukkar Apartments where dinner was served by Kechara Oasis. After a hearty vegetarian meal, guests adjourned to Wisdom Hall to participate in the Lama Chopa Puja. Led by Pastor Chia Song Peng and Pastor JJ Chong, Kecharians requested the blessings of our lineage lamas for our Guru’s long life. The prayers were also dedicated towards the accumulation of merits for us to receive Rinpoche’s Dharma teachings and to request for the success of Rinpoche’s activities.

It was a day like what Rinpoche has always worked for – an event held on our land, in our buildings, with pujas and blessings done by our local Malaysians, and catered for by our own vegetarian restaurant. It is this vision that is slowly coming to life in Kechara Forest Retreat, a place where Malaysians will be able to do something to help other Malaysians. Thus on behalf of all Kecharians, we wish Rinpoche a very happy birthday and offer our gratitude to Rinpoche for 48 years of benefiting sentient beings. May we have the merits for Rinpoche to remain long with us, for all of Rinpoche’s visions to materialise and for us to always be able to serve our lama.

Its was such a wonderful and auspicious day to have seen kechara forest retreat filled with so many visitors and students coming together for the purpose of our Guru’s Birthday. It was fun and it felt like such positive energy filled the whole place where everyone was learning and praying together for our Guru’s Long Life. I had missed the releasing pf the birds but i’m glad to see so many people attended the ceremony and its a huge relief to see so many birds set free back into nature. I would like to thank Rinpoche for giving us kechara forest retreat, a place where everyone would be able to make wishes and pray together in harmony. Every day kechara forest retreat is growing and everyday more visitors are coming from all over the world. I hope Rinpoche is happy and feeling well.

This is the 1st major event organised by Kechara in Kechara Forest Retreat, Chamang, Bentong to coincide with Tsem Rinpoche’s birthday. We had animal liberation, a wedding blessing ceremony, short tours of the Manjuhri Hill, Wisdom Hall and Dukkar apartments for first time guests who came from afar.

The event was attended by 400 over guests and refreshments were prepared for them before the event. Hard working staff planned this event out meticulously to ensure safety, security and car parks were taken into consideration. In all, the event was a good one for everyone who took part. May Tsem Rinpoche have long life and good health to continue turning the wheel of dharma to benefit all. Happy Birthday!

Looking back celebrating your birthday last year at Kechara House gompa at SumwayMas, I am very grateful that this year we can have it at Wisdom Hall at Kechara Forest Retreat. The organizing team worked hard and everything went smoothly with nary a mishap or bad incident. Smiles were on everyone’s faces during and after the events, it was a joyous occasion. This year we have had the privilege to celebrate Rinpoche’s birthday at “Kechara Forest Retreat Land”. Students started gathering at 10am in front of Wisdom Hall’s iconic outdoor Lama Tsongkhapa’s statue for Animals Liberation, and recitation of Medicine Buddha’s mantra to bless the release of 350 Birds under the guidance of Pastor Adeline. Activity for the day also included particular special occasion of the wedding’s blessing of Datuk Eric Tan’s son (Edwin Tan), representating the first blessing of such occasion to happen on Kechara’s holy land! The day was full of joy and satisfaction, with the vision that our Kechara’s dream is slowly and steadfastly materialising to reality to benefit all beings. May Rinpoche have a long and healthy life always to guide us through in benefitting all sentient beings! Om mani padme hung.

It was a hive of activities on the 24 October when Kecharians, friends and family members gathered at Kechara Forest Retreat (KFR).

It was the first time we celebrated our Guru’s birthday there; first time we had an animal liberation day; and also the first time a wedding blessing was conducted there.

So it turned out we were there to celebrate a day of many first’s.

  26. Pastor Han Nee on Oct 27, 2013 at 4:42 pm

Kechara Forest Retreat burst into life in an explosion of activities to celebrate the 48th Birthday of Tsem Rinpoche, Spiritual Guide and founder of Kechara.

The day started with the liberation of 350 birds. From then on in and around Wisdom hall and Dukkar Apartments were crowds of people walking back and forth. There was the wedding blessing ceremony of Dato Wira Eric Tan’s elder son, Edwin , and Elaine.

In the afternoon, groups of people joined in a continuous series of tours of KFR. Many were visiting KFR for the first time.

In the evening, 400 students joined in a long-life Lama Chopa puja for Rinpoche.

May Kechara Forest Retreat continue to grow and develop into what has been envisioned for it by Rinpoche – a place of peace, healing, retreat and learning(especially spiritual retreat and learning) for all from around the world.

All the pastors, committee and volunteer did a fantastic job to make the event a success.A big”Thank you” to them.
May we be able to celebrate our Rinpoche next Birthday at the KFR with the vision of our Rinpoche completed as intended.
Wishing a Happy Birthday to Rinpoche, may he have a long life to turn the wheel of Dharma.

  28. Beatrix Ooi on Oct 27, 2013 at 1:05 am

I was very fortunate to be able to attend and witness the celebration, Kecharians put in a lot of time and efforts to make the event a success. I’ve read about Pastor Jean Ai’s blog on why Rinpoche doesn’t like birthday celebrations, and I agree with that. I haven’t been celebrating my birthday for 2 years, I have to admit that I really do not like the feeling of people gathering around me and sing me happy birthday song. And I think it is a day where I can do more good deeds and dedicate to my parents cause they went through a lot of hard times when I was still in my mother’s stomach.

Gathering and enjoying acceptance of your parents to give a birth to you, blessing of meeting the dharma and blessing of living 48 years, helping many sentient beings. Du Fu (712-770 AD), also known as Tu Fu, was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty, often considered one of the greatest alongside Li Bai. He was a poet-historian and a poet-sage, known for his realistic depictions of human suffering and reflections on the troubled times of his era. His poems, reflecting his personal experiences and the political instability of the time, have had a lasting impact on both Chinese and Japanese literary traditions.
    Interesting read.

H H Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo is by far one of the most popular and influential Gelug religious figures of the 20th Century. One of Phabongkha’s most important aristocratic students, Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom Tsering relationship to her teacher and his lineage teachings goes along way .She is famously remembered for is her unwavering devotion towards her guru, HH Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Yangdzom Tsering’s Shatra family were ancient sponsors and students of the Gelug tradition and had apparently been patrons of Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelug school. The life stories of Lady Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom as mentioned by Joona Repo is indeed inspiring. How her life struggles with tragedies, and her devotion to dorje Shugden and the Gelug tradition throughout her life.

Looking at these pictures remained me of my first pilgrimage to Wu Tai San. With the blessings of our guru, we able to visit Wu Tai San a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site . In fact it never did come to my mind that I am fortunate given a chance to go as I am still very new then. Upon hearing about the pilgrimage I got myself register without much thought. The history and stories of Wu Tai San has inspired me to go there. Interesting the Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of China are closely connected to WuTai San. Wu Tai San located in Shanxi Province, China renowned as the home of Lord Manjushri the bodhisattva of wisdom, with different emanations of the bodhisattva residing on each of the five peaks. The area is dotted with over 50 temples and monasteries, many of which are historical and architecturally significant. Those temples built over 7 dynasties housing numerous Buddhist relics. Wutai Shan also offers stunning scenery, including snow-capped peaks, forests, and streams. Wu Tai San is one of the four Sacred Buddhist mountains of China, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wutai Shan was known to be a mystical and sacred site inhabited by divine spirits, accompanied by unusual events, such as miraculous light appearances at night.
We visited all the Holy sites, making offerings and doing prayers at each sites. We even have the opportunity to collect holy stones for future statue insertion or to keep on our altars. Times flies as our pilgrimage ended with so many stories to share with the rest.
Thank you Rinpoche and writes team sharing those pictures.

Padmasambhava, the Lotus-born Guru, also known as Guru Rinpoche is a legendary tantric Buddhist master who is widely revered in Tibetan Buddhism. He is seen as the second Buddha particularly within the Nyingma .He was a legendary Indian Buddhist mystic credited with introducing Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. As found in Buddhist scriptures Padmasambhava birth is often associated with legends and prophecies. Interesting…… Padmasambhava is depicted with eight manifestations, each reflecting a different aspect of his miraculous activities. Interesting article .

Milarepa Cave, situated high in the Himalayan mountain of Tibet, a sacred cave beckons pilgrims and spiritual seekers from across the globe. Milarepa Cave, a site of profound significance in Tibetan Buddhism, is merely a geological wonder. This sacred cave is also a living testament to the power of meditation and devotion. Its where an 11th-century yogi and poet who spent transformative years in solitary practice. Milarepa Cave graces Tibet’s rugged yet stunning landscapes, a region renowned for its deep spiritual heritage and breath-taking natural beauty. The cave’s importance is inseparable from a revered figure and the enduring legacy of Jetsun Milarepa a revered yogi and poet in Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa Cave stands not just as a geological formation but as a powerful symbol of spiritual transformation and the enduring strength of Tibetan Buddhism. Reading this interesting cave had me Google for more information about this sacred cave. Numerous stories and legends surround Milarepa’s time in the cave, enhancing its mystical aura.

I wanted to take a moment to share a recent experience with you regarding my Instagram account. Unfortunately, my account was hacked, which was both frustrating and disappointing. Losing access to something that plays a significant role in my business and personal connections was incredibly stressful. What made the situation even more challenging was discovering that Meta does not have a dedicated support team to assist users facing account compromises. With so many people experiencing this issue daily, it’s alarming that their recovery process is not more accessible or efficient. After numerous failed attempts to recover my account through Meta’s standard procedures, I was fortunate enough to get in touch with a member of the Meta recovery department, @Rothsteincode on X (formerly Twitter), and via email at rothsteincode@gmail.com Their expertise and guidance were invaluable, and thanks to their assistance, I was able to regain full access to my account.
While I am incredibly grateful for their help, this experience has highlighted a major issue—Meta needs to implement better security measures and provide more reliable support for users dealing with these kinds of problems. The lack of direct customer support is unacceptable, considering how vital social media platforms have become for businesses and individuals alike.I wanted to share this with you in case you or anyone you know ever faces a similar issue. If you ever find yourself in this unfortunate situation, I highly recommend reaching out to @Rothsteincode for assistance. Hopefully, Meta will take action to improve their security policies and customer service in the near future.Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay safe online, and let’s continue to support each other in this digital space.

A great history of a great yogi which I do enjoy reading , reading over it again and again. Jetsun Milarepa was a famous Tibetan siddha, known as a murderer when he was a young man. Who later turning to Buddhism and becoming a highly accomplished Buddhist disciple. Generally considered as one of Tibet’s most famous yogis and spiritual poets, whose teachings are known among several schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa’s story is one of struggle, anguish, resolve, and triumph all of which make him recognizably. Practicing these teachings for many years in isolated mountain retreats in caves such as caves hidden deep in the mountains of Tsum Valley. That’s where Milarepa attained enlightenment and gained fame for his incredible perseverance in practice and for his spontaneous songs of realisation. Milarepa is said to be the first to achieve the state of Vajradhara in one lifetime. That’s incredible.

H.H Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was a Gelug Lama, a sharp analyst, master of philosophical debate and a Tantric practitioner. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was a disciple of the third Trijang Rinpoche, junior tutor of the 14th Dalai Lama. Rinpoche was known as a strong, detached and wrathful lama having impeccable knowledge of all rituals, art and science. Thousands of Westerners have received and benefited from his teachings both in the West and in India and gave many empowerments and teachings as well. Visiting Tibet, holy Gaden Monastery is everyone dream and a once life time. Of course if we have the means to visit again will be great. End of December 2008 and early January 2009 our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche with a small group students visited Tibet. Thousands of pilgrims, visitors and tourists around the world have visited this incredible holy land for the last 600 years. Tsem Rinpoche visited Tibet for the first time with an oxygen tank. I am fortunate to visit this holy place with my Dharma brothers and sisters years back.
With our Guru blessing we went without any without any hitch. Visited most of the monasteries and could feel the powerful energies there. Looking at those pictures in this blog reminds me of trip there.

Interesting….. a ground breaking documentary by world BBC where everyone should watch. BBC did mentioned and documented that Jesus was a Buddhist monk and that he had spent some years in India. I would not know about this till I came across this blog. Many people most probably too. Interesting watch one should not miss. Jesus was a religious leader revered in Christianity, one of the world’s major religions. He is regarded by most Christians as the Incarnation of God. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus was well acquainted with Buddhism. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus knew about Buddhism. Other evidence, while perhaps apocryphal, indicates that he spent most of his so-called lost years outside Judea, possibly in Kashmir to study Buddhism exclusively.

The Great Buddhas of Bamiyan were two monumental Buddhist statues built around 600 CE. A holy site for Buddhists on the Silk Road, historically a caravan route linking the markets of China with those of the Western world. The two most prominent statues were the giant standing sculptures of the Buddhas .It was the site of several Buddhist monasteries where monks at the monasteries lived as hermits. It was until in 2001, both statues were destroyed by the Taliban . Before being blown up in 2001, they were the largest examples of standing Buddha carvings in the world .Buddhism was eliminated in Afghanistan by the 13th century during the Mongol conquests. Sadly all statues depicting humans in Afghanistan was destroyed. They were perhaps the most famous cultural landmarks of the region, and the site was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Despite the Buddhas’s destruction, the ruins continue to be a popular culture landmark, where many locals, pilgrims and tourist visit the site.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting blog.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. One of the places everyone should visit- https://bit.ly/2VgsHhK

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
