Vision For The Future in Jakarta

Mar 17, 2015 | Views: 302

Ever since Kechara Indonesia (Yayasan Kechara Indonesia) was established in Jakarta by Valentina, I have been getting constant updates regarding their activities… and with each passing activity, their outreach to the community grows bigger! In their most recent community work for the people of Jakarta, YKI sponsored a total of 400 spectacles for the needy in Jakarta.

I am so happy to receive updates like this from Valentina, who transforms Dharma into action in the form of wonderful social work she does in Indonesia. Valentina is an extremely nice and capable lady, and has great relationships with the social workers in the Indonesian government, whom are always happy to assist YKI in their charitable activities.

I thought I’d blog about YKI’s latest community project known as ‘Vision for the Future‘ for everyone to read and see, what a success the project was. Below is a brief history about the project and also some pictures from the event. Do read up and see the many people who have benefited from their tireless efforts.

Vision for the Future 3 – Palmerah District Jakarta

[Written by Valentina Suhendra]

History

In year 2013, I met a Regina Amal, who is passionate about charity work.   Not long after I met her, Regina started to join YKI’s various activities such as the  student vaccination program, food distribution, sembako distribution etc.  She told me that she has an idea to perform eye examination projects and sponsoring spectacles for those who cannot afford it.  I told her that the idea was good, but I have seen many people who have grand ideas, but fail to execute them for whatever reasons.  Only by executing, someone can gain confidence to execute future projects.  Several weeks later, Regina participated in KPMG’s CSR competition with her Vision for the Future idea and won.  She obtained the funds to execute her idea and sourced the relevant vendors, it was during this time that she asked Kechara Indonesia’s assistance to find people who would potentially need the spectacles, but are unable to afford them.

The Vision for the Future Project 1 was executed in year 2013 in two locations which is in  Cipete  and Pertamburan.   The project has since evolved to become a joint Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project between KPMG and YKI.

At the initial stage of this program, the Vision for the Future was only open for children under 18 years of age, as the original intention was to help children to concentrate better in their study.  However, when looking for potential participants, we noted that there are many adults who needed spectacles as well but could not afford them, especially for those above 40 years old who needed double focus spectacles.  Taking this in account, we removed the age limit of the participant in our future projects.  The project was a success.  Everyone involved in this project was touched during the spectacle distribution, especially when we saw the recipients’ faces beaming happily because finally, they are able to look at the world with a clearer vision.  Many of the spectacle recipients later gave us feedback that they will now be able to concentrate better at school and at work.

The second project ‘Vision for the Future 2’ – was executed in early 2014 in Cipete, South Jakarta for 200 people.  The project was successful as well and because the crowd was very cooperative, YKI decided to adopt Cipete as one of our regular food distribution site.

Vision for the Future 3

Since YKI was formalized in February 2015, we have worked closely with local government officials which enabled us to execute activities in the scale that was previously not feasible to us.  Previously, our Vision for the Future project can only cater a maximum of 100-200 people for each project, mainly due to security reasons and difficulties in finding eligible participants.

In January 2015, Regina asked if YKI was interested in executing another Vision for the Future Project within 1.5 week period, which would take place in 7 February 2015, as many committee members would not be available in mid – end February 2015 for various reasons.  Despite the short time frame, we decided to give it a shot and went ahead to plan for the 3rd Vision for the Future program.  This time, we aimed to invite 400 participants in our eye examination programs and at the same time, we raised the funds needed within that short time span.  During this time, YKI liaison from Social Section in Kecamatan Palmerah, Ms. Emayati Adiba, and Registered Social Workers (Pekerja Sosial Masyarakat (PSM) in Palmerah District) was a great help to our project as she started to mobilize other social pillars to find the 400 eligible participants from Kecamatan Palmerah. She also arranged for snacks to be prepared for the event.  We were fortunate that the government have been very helpful as they helped us select those who fall below the poverty line through the use of their official database, so that these people may benefit from our program. Although the project was done in a rush, all parties involved worked efficiently which made this program a success.

Thanks to the kindness of Deputy District Head of Kecamatan Palmerah – Mr. H.M. Asyik Noor Hilmany whom allowed us to use a government office , YKI managed to secure a venue for our event at zero cost. It was held in Kota Bambu Sub District (Kelurahan Kota Bambu) office, where they allowed us to use the 4th floor of their office and furniture for the event, and because it was a government office, we did not have to worry about security or safety issues. This allowed us to carry out our event smoothly and focus on serving the community.  All six sub districts (Kelurahan) within Kecamatan Palmerah participated in choosing eligible participants for this project.  The invitation for this event was issued to be on the 7th February 2015 and the registration began from 8:00 AM to 12:00  PM.  When the day of the event arrived, the whole event went smoothly due to the harmonious cooperation between many different parties.

YKI set out the ground rules as follows:

  • Only those who received the invitations can participate in the eye examination program
  • Only those with a minus greater than 0.5 are eligible for the spectacles and can proceed to choose the frames of their choice
  • Every registered participant is given 1 box of snack
  • YKI will sponsor new spectacles for eligible recipients.

YKI volunteers were spread out in various counters:  Registration counters, automatic eye exams counter, manual eye exam counter, frame counter, spectacle data entry counter.

After the event, YKI compiled the list of spectacles to be ordered and agreed the commercials with the vendor.  Several weeks later, the spectacles were ready for distribution.

Spectacle distribution

A  month later, YKI together Registered Social workers, KASI Sosial Kecamatan Palmerah and Kelurahan Kota Bambu distributed the spectacles to the recipients on the 6th and 8th of March in Kelurahan Kota Bambu office.

Overall, this project was a success due to harmonious cooperation of all parties involved, Kecamatan Palmerah, the sponsors, the spectacle vendor, and last but not least the volunteers.  The members of YKI are extremely grateful that we are able to connect with various kind, dedicated and compassionate individuals that are determined to ensure the event was a success.

Once selected, a YKI volunteer will help document the choosen spectacle frame, the results of the eye examination as well as the recipient’s details, so that they will be able to give the spectacle to the right person a month later

After a long day of serving the community, YKI volunteers take a picture together to rejoice in the good work they have done. The young lady in grey T-shirt is Regina, she was the one that came up the idea to sponsor spectacles to the needy

I rejoice in the work that YKI had done to benefit the community. How knows that a simple pair of glasses can make someone’s day ? When we are out to help other people, we must constantly think of their needs and wants instead of ours. Most of the time, what they need is the most basic necessities which we often overlook. Walking in their shoes and thinking in their place is a very important. This is about being selfless.

  2. JP on Jan 21, 2016 at 12:07 am

YKI through the stewardship of Valentina is doing a great job helping the poor in Indonesia. There are so many ways of helping others. If only we take the time to observe and find out their needs, we will realize that basic necessities we often take for granted, are what is much needed.

It’s great that Valentina gave her volunteer an opportunity to execute her idea of providing glasses to the poor. Imagine not being able to see clearly. Valentina and her team gave hundreds of Indonesians better eye sight so that they can study and perform better at work. Better education and work performance will help alleviate poverty.

I rejoice in YKI’s social work and the stand for helping the less fortunate. May their efforts continue to bring light into lives of many more.

Giving the things another person needs is true compassion and caring. Thank you Yayasan Kechara Indonesia for compassion in action. 🙂

    Dear Rinpoche,

I am so glad to know that the Kechara branch in Indonesia is doing so well and benefiting so many people. 🙂 It also amazes me to know that the government is working alongside YKI in doing events like these. Things like these give me hope for the future. 🙂 I am so glad about this news. Super happy. Thank you, Rinpoche, for posting this. _/|\_

    Your humble student,
    Keng Hwa.

Valentina and Regina, along with the volunteers at YKI, really did a wonderful job in Indonesia.

As Rinpoche mentioned, they really transformed Dharma into actions.

Such simple acts with such close harmonious, concerted efforts by the Government, volunteers and YKI helped so many people.

This kind gesture helped many students who can now focus better in school. May they grow up to help others too…

    Thank you.

fantastic effort by Valentina and YKI for showing us compassion in action. Providing spectacles service to the needy is a great drive to help those who has vision problem but could not afford to get a proper spectacle. Most importantly it provide the student who have vision problem to be able to study with problem, this Vision for future is a great initiative. Kudos to Valentina and also the Yayasan Kechara Indonesia volunteers.

  8. Josh Akers on Mar 23, 2015 at 12:29 pm

Im loving seeing all these amazing stories of Kecharians lately. stepping up and making these incredible visions of compassion into reality. I sincerely hope to be involved in something like this very soon… I don’t want good reputation, I want this sick world to heal as soon as possible.

I am encouraged to start my own little projects, on whatever scale I can muster. From helping lone homeless people, like Rinpoche often does, to helping a whole community like this vision project. We have to rejoice deeply about our efforts on every ‘level’ we can help others on.

  9. Uncle Eddie on Mar 20, 2015 at 2:12 pm

A very hearty and deep appreciation to YKI volunteers for the good work done, particularly to the compassionate Regina, who initiated the wonderful idea of the sponsorship of spectacles to the needy. This free spectacles distribution, “truly represents YKI Vision for the future in Jakarta!” I can still recollect what our Rinpoche has once said, “Spiritual Practice is not going to places and chanting, knowing the stuff and debating. Spiritual Practice is the transformation of our perspective and how we look at things. It is how much your mind has changed from negative to positive; that is spiritual practice.” Nevertheless, congratulations to all YKI volunteers at Jakarta for all the kindness and good phillantropic work well done!

  10. Jacinta Goh on Mar 19, 2015 at 8:05 am

This is Dharma that has been translated into action. In these days compassion in action is very necessary. Seeing others happy by relieving their burdens, pains, worries and in this case, to let them have better vision is a good example for others. Together should create conscious community for us and the generations to come. Thank you to Valentina and her team. Looks like you guys are doing great and very happy to have constantly receiving great news from you all… Keep the ball rolling ya!!!!!

Many high lamas have written prayers to Dorje Shugden. One of them is the 5th Dalai Lama. He realised that Dorje Shugden is, in fact, an emanation of Manjushri manifests in the form of a Dharma protector. Therefore, he wrote this prayer to praise his enlightened qualities. We can this prayer daily and conclude with Dorje Shugden’s mantra: OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA.

Taung Kalat Buddhist Temple in Bagan, Myanmar is so beautiful and majestic. It is located on the southwestern side of Mount Popa, a volcano situated along the Pegu Range in Central Myanmar. The temple rests on a volcanic plug at 657 metres above sea level. The view from the temple is simply stunning, it is very green and vast. The best time to visit is in October.

The Trailblazing Green School in Bali is amazing, I really like its concept. It does not focus just the academic results but it also emphasises on living in harmony with our environment. The school teaches the students our impact on the environment, and our connectivity with each other and the earth.

The Green school is very environmentally friendly, the buildings are not built from concrete but bamboos. They are not hooked up to the main power supply but they rely on solar power. The main focus of their education syllabus is sustainability through community integration and entrepreneurial learning.

Spirits in the ghost realm are living in suffering and pain. They are always in hunger, their throat is so small that the food can’t go through. When they want to eat, all the food will be burnt. Hence reciting mantra and dedicate to them is very important to plant the dharma seed in them. Hopefully, they will have swift rebirth and alleviate their suffering.

So many people had experienced with black magic and spirits all over the world and Rinpoche had kindly shared the ways we can overcome this problem before it takes hold of our lives with harm and danger. Sometimes even death is inevitable. So do read for knowledge if not for yourself then for others that you may meet. Do share your experiences as we wish to learn too.

Sanskrit name for this deity is “Dharmaraja” – the King of the Dharma. In this wrathful and protective aspect, Manjushri, the Buddha of wisdom, appears to conquer hindrances and to remove inner or outer obstacles. Karupa arose as the main Dharma Protector of the Yamantaka Tantras along with Six-Armed Mahakala, Vaishravana and Dorje Shugden in this beautiful art paintings. As one of the three protectors of the Lamrim tradition.
Reading this post I have increase a little knowledge.

The Green School is a non-profit, private and international school that provides learning from pre-kindergarten level right up to high school. The Green School is situated along the Ayung River near Ubud, Bali in Indonesia. It has no walls and is nestled amongst rainforests with rice paddy fields nearby. The building is built solely from bamboo, and is powered by the sun. The Green School has made its mission to educate students and the community on sustainable living using an education syllabus that focuses on sustainability through community integration and entrepreneurial learning.

John and Cynthia Hardy founded the Green School in 2006 based on Alan Wagstaff’s Three Springs concept for an educational village community. The school opened in September 2008 and can be accessed via a 22-metre (72.1 ft) bamboo bridge across the Ayung River. Initially built to cater to 90 students, it has since grown to accommodate 415 students from 30 countries. 50 bamboo buildings provide classrooms and boarding houses for the students.

The foremost priorities of the Green School are sustainability, education, conservation, community support, and nurturing its children’s individual talents. Traditional topics are combined with experiential classes, such as cooking, gardening, and even traditional Balinese mud wrestling. The children learn biology by working in the school garden and looking after the school buffalo. They study geographical topics on the river banks that flow through the school. They also learn in a classroom setting with books and paper.

The Tibetan diaspora began in 1959 after the People’s Liberation Army entered the country and the Dalai Lama fled into exile. Upon entering India, the Dalai Lama and his exiled leadership were granted 24 tracts of land scattered throughout the country on which the Tibetans would be able to reestablish themselves. These tracts of land were freely and kindly given to the Dalai Lama and his people by the Indian government led by Jawaharlal Nehru. They were granted with the assumption that the Tibetans would be in India as refugees for a very long time and would therefore need space of their own. Indeed, Nehru’s foresight was such that he even extended a citizenship policy to the Tibetans – if within 99 years they were unable to accomplish their political goals and return to their homeland, Tibetans would be forced to take up Indian citizenship and assimilate with the rest of the Indian population.

Time has shown that thus far, Nehru was almost prophetic in the arrangements he made for the Tibetan people. In the last 60 years, the Tibetan leadership have not been successful in making progress with their political goals. While China continues to rise in power and influence on a global level, the Tibetan leadership and their people continue to be racked by infighting, political scandal, manipulations, divisions and accusations of embezzlement, financial mismanagement, corruption and murder.

We can therefore see that living in exile has been very challenging for the Dalai Lama and his community. Having experienced a similar pain and hardship, the world was therefore taken aback by the apparent callousness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama when he recently issued the statement

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

It says when the Buddha was born, all the gods, demigods and asura came to pay homage. Buddha proclaimed it will be his last rebirth in samsara. Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu all came to make offerings to a Universal Monarch (Buddha) during this most auspicious time. This is one of the depictions of that. Tsem Rinpoche

Respected lamas of any devoted students will have two stupas for their remains. One stupa inside the ladrang of the lama and one stupa outside for the public to worship and do kora. By keeping the remains of the lama\'s previous lives in stupas, and making offerings, generates the merits for the current incarnation and future incarnations of the lama to be able to do more dharma work to benefit others.

Here is a beautiful indoor stupa to a lama in Tibet. It is up to the strength of the devotion of the students to create such stupas in respect and dedication of their lama\'s previous incarnation(s). TR

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
