Activities in Kechara Indonesia!

Dec 17, 2013 | Views: 658

Dear all,

I recently received a wonderful e-mail update from one of my students in Indonesia, Valentina Suhendra.

Valentina is an independent lady, who serves as a director in one of the Big 4 accounting firms in Jakarta. At a glance, Valentina may appear like any other ordinary career woman, but apart from her full-time job, she also heads the Indonesian branch of Kechara, single-handedly.

I rejoice for all of her activity updates for October and November. She continuously practices compassion through her actions and consistently helps the under-privileged in Indonesia. I really appreciate students who strive to change and practice the Dharma!

I thought that I should share with you what Valentina has been up to for the last 2 months, I am glad many people under her care are getting a better quality of life due to her tirelessly working to serve others.

Tsem Rinpoche

Kechara Indonesia – October to November 2013

The month of October and November 2013 proved to be a busy month for us. Our members have been executing many activities that are of benefit for others and at the same time, we were able to have fun. In addition to our weekly food distribution, we have executed Mentally Challenged Project, participated in the historic Mandiri Jakarta Marathon, helped a sick child, and provide ad hoc sponsorship to 10 students, and so forth. It has been a rewarding period for us.

Weekly food distribution

In addition to the usual weekly distribution of food packages, we received a donation of 1,800 packages of SMAX snack from Mr. Potato to complement our distribution. Our clients were happy. We have been building good relationship with our clients through consistent food weekly food distribution. The month of November 2013 marked our 3rd year food distribution. We started in early November 2010 with only 18 food packages. It is amazing how a small act of good will can develop into something like what we are today.

Mandiri Jakarta Marathon

Six of Kechara Indonesia members were joining Mandiri Jakarta marathon. At first, we were doing this activity for fun since many of us like to do sport related activities. However, one week before the event, a group of runner called Team Chubby coordinated by Mr. Holip Soekawan decided to linked their group performance in the marathon to our food packages donation. That was very kind for them. They called their program LUNAS (Lari Untuk Nasi Bungkus). Inspired by Team Chubby, some of our friends started to bet on Kechara Indonesia team’s performance too in this marathon. Luckily, we were all safe and sound. I think we have proven time and again in the past three years that charity can be fun too.

Ad hoc student sponsorship

Kechara Indonesia is conducting a join CSR again with KPMG Indonesia. This time, KPMG decided to provide ad hoc sponsorship to 10 students from less fortunage economic background. We helped to shortlist the students from among our clients and some of the school with whom we have provided student sponsorship in the past. We wish these students success in their future endeavors.

Vision for the future project part 3

As a continuity of the previous Vision for the Future Project, together with KPMG, we sponsored 11 more glasses to our clients who did not get the correct lenses or due to administrative issues did not get the glasses that we promised. Thus, we brought them to optician, and ordered new glasses for them. It is important for us to fulfil our promise.

Mentally Challenged Project

Kechara Indonesia provided dry food donation and wheel chair to Yayasan Bhakti Luhur. This NGO is run by a group of Chatolic nun and nurses. They helped mentally and physically challenged individuals who were entrusted by their family to them. In this project, we donated five customized wheel chairs, milk, sugar, and rice in addition to 100 lunch box set and breads.

Helping sick children

In November, Kechara Indonesia team received a plea for help from our expatriate friend. He saw two sick children in an area near Atma Jaya University. He wanted to help, but have communication problems. Thus, Kechara Indonesia team checked on the children and the family and brought them to hospital. The younger of the two need to be hospitalized since she was very weak (with parental consent). We have received the news that the children are well again, and the younger one has been discharged from hospital.

As usual, thank you to all sponsors who have been supporting us, since without you, we will not be able to execute our activities.

Aktivitas Kechara Indonesia bulan Oktober – November 2013

Kegiatan Pendanaan Siswa/i Ad Hoc

Proyek Vision for the Future Bagian 3

Dear Rinpoche, I’m really surprised that Indonesia also started something like KSK (Kechara Soup Kitchen)and I’m also very happy for the Kechara Indonesia members. Because of them, the poor people can suffer less. I wish more people will volunteer at Kechara Indonesia and more people will find jobs.

Valentina is one of the very inspiring person in Kechara, she does not play mind game, she do everything in Indonesia on her own, same as other human being, she has her own problems, her ups and downs moment, but she does not give up just because of the challenges she’s facing, she walk through it one by one and doing her Dharma work consistently in Indonesia alone.

With the distance she has with Rinpoche, she does not see Rinpoche often or to receive teaching from him much, but with her faith she has to Rinpoche and the Dharma, she do more and more to benefit the local citizen, started with giving food to the homeless until now getting sponsor for the unfortunate kids so they can have the chance to go school.

Thank you Valentina for your hard work, as for now many people in your country has been benefited.

Valentina is showing that with strong determination and skillful means, one can combine work and dharma successfully. Over the years, i have seen Valentina at various Kechara events over the years. Little did i expect her to bring Kechara to such a great height in Indonesia.

Valentina, may your actions, efforts and results inspire more people to come forth and join us in the quest to relieve the sufferings of the under-privileged across the globe.

Thank You for sharing Rinpoche, it’s great to know about the activities that are going in Kechara @ Indonesia. What they are doing is great! You gain TRUE happiness when you help others, the feeling of happiness that builds on materialism does not last long, cause nothing is permanent, people grow old and people die.

Valentina Suhendra has proven to us that although she is very busy as a director in one of the big 4 accounting firms in Jakarta, yet she is actively leading Kechara Indonesia in many Dharma works that benefit many people in Indonesia. She embodies the quality of selflessness and compassion towards the less fortunate people, sets a good example for us to follow and inspire many to do more Dharma works. Valentina Suhendra, you are our inspiration!

“Compassion knows Barrier”. What a motto. Valentina is very inspiring and reading this blog puts me to shame. Her compassion, steadfastness, joyous effort and humanitarianism is truly a shining example of what Dharma practice is all about. I rejoice for her and her team in Indonesia.

Perhaps we in Malaysia should make an effort to visit Jakarta to offer our support some times soon.

The Buddha Shakyamuni and Bodhisattva Manjushri worked closely to expound the Dharma, although Manjushri himself had achieved enlightenment many lifetimes ago. According to the Avatamsaka Sutra, Manjushri is actually the Buddha Nageshvaraja who achieved enlightenment many eons ago in a different world system. In Shakyamuni’s time however, he took the form of Manjushri, a student of Lord Buddha himself. Indeed, many teachings arose just because Manjushri asked a question to Buddha Shakyamuni.

Manjushri is the embodiment of wisdom and knowledge, and this Namasanghiti text that recalls his names and qualities represents the pinnacle of all Shakyamuni Buddha’s teachings. Scholars classify it as a tantra of the non-dual (advaya) class, along with the Kalachakra Tantra.

The Namasanghiti was expounded by Shakyamuni Buddha for his disciple Vajrapani and his wrathful retinue in order to lead them to Buddhahood. The essence of the Namasanghiti text is that Manjushri Bodhisattva is the embodiment of all knowledge. The Namasanghiti is a short text, consisting only of around 160 verses and a prose section, which is a fraction of the vast Sutras such as Avatamsaka Sutra and Prajnaparamita Sutras, or the endless ocean of tantras such as Manjushri-Mula-Kalpa.

But weird and it is shocking to know the dogs cruelty, smuggling and trading just for the meat across Asia, through the famous river, What a cruel business. The veneration of relics is an ancient custom that plays an important role in major world religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Shamanism. For example, sites that house holy relics in Christianity are major pilgrimage destinations because it is believed that these relics are a benediction to the living and the deceased.

In Buddhism, holy relics generally refer to the physical remains or personal effects of Buddha Shakyamuni. Incredibly, some of Buddha Shakyamuni’s bodily remains have survived for two and a half millennia, including the much-revered sacred tooth of the Buddha in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Most Buddhist temples have stupas, and these stupas are often created specifically to house precious relics. Such reliquary stupas often become the initial structure around which the whole temple is later based. Today, stupas may also hold the ashes or ringsel (relics in Tibetan) of prominent or respected Buddhist masters.

Towering imposingly and majestically in the sky, mountains are believed to possess supernatural properties because they are closer to heaven than any other earthly feature. Interestingly, many mountains are linked to spirituality and enlightened beings, such as the Buddha and Jesus.

From the earliest times, many peoples from the Greeks and Native Americans to the Indians and Polynesians have placed mountains central to their beliefs. The power of such sacred places is believed to enhance the mortal experience and sometimes, it is even forbidden to climb them out of respect.

The mountain calls to us with its calm and serene environment and is often chosen as the site for religious retreats. Pilgrimages to holy mountains are also a way to connect to the sacred and they allow us to purify our sins through the rigour of an arduous climb. In some religions, adherents are urged to make such a pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

Here is a selection of sacred mountains scattered across the globe. They are revered by people separated by vast spaces but united in their awe and regard for these magnificent giants of nature.

Labrang Monastery in Xiahe County, northwest China’s Gansu Province, is an annual destination for tourists, Buddhists and pilgrims from around the world. They gather to witness the unveiling of the world’s largest thangka (tapestry) of Buddha, as part of the Grand Monlam Prayer festivities.

Also called the “Sunning of the Buddha” ritual, at this time, Tibetan monks invite a giant thangka about 100-feet long and 65-feet wide of Buddha Amitabha, up a mountain near Labrang Monastery, which is the largest Tibetan monastery outside of Lhasa.

It is unveiled at first light on the side of the mountain so that the first rays of the sun illuminate the sacred painting.

This is not the only story about how Rinpoche helped others. I remember reading an article about Rinpoche buying lottery tickets from a woman in Thailand so she could end her day earlier with the income she needs for the family. Rinpoche always walked the talks, he didn’t just preach but he showed us how to put his teachings in practice. Never be afraid to be kind and nice to others, and when we are kind to others, it should not be with the intention to get something back from them. Be kind and be generous always, this is how we can make our planet a better living space.

If we want to go on holidays, it is better to go to holy places. Even if such places are not sophisticated, they benefit us spiritually; we can take a break and collect merit, plant Dharma seeds and be blessed. This is a good way of combining the pleasure of holidays with the spirituality of collecting merit.

Never get tired of collecting merit because it offsets negative karma that leads to suffering. People without Dharma will not know this so for them, a holiday is a holiday. They do not know that their holidays will bring no long-term benefit. With Dharma, we are wiser.

We should go on pilgrimage to places where holy beings are known to reside or where great practitioners have engaged in profound practices. These places are vortexes of energy – an area where concentrated energy naturally converges on the planet’s surface.

Mainland Thai culture is heavily influenced by Buddhism. However, unlike most other Buddhist countries of East Asia, Thai Buddhists follow the Theravada school of Buddhism. Thai temples, known as wats, are usually adorned with lavish gold ornaments, and are easily identifiable by their multi-coloured pointed roofs. Pre-Buddhist traditions have been infused with the values of Buddhism, making Thailand a cultural powerhouse.

According to Buddhist history, the first recorded use of incense occurred during Buddha Shakyamuni’s time, when a woman named Magadha Sangmo offered incense and prayers to request the Buddha to come forth and visit her village. Magadha Sangmo was the daughter of the Buddha main patron, Suddatta. She mirrored her father’s immense faith in Buddha Shakyamuni and was his ardent devotee.

After marrying and moving to a village where Buddhism was not practised, she wished very much to meet her guru, the Buddha, again. So one day, she climbed to the roof of her in-law’s house, offered incense and sincerely prayed for the Buddha to visit her. Hearing her prayers, Buddha Shakyamuni, together with his entourage, descended from the sky to fulfil her request. It is said that upon meeting the Buddha and hearing his teachings, the entire village became Buddhists. In this way, Magadha Sangmo’s heartfelt request to the Buddha also benefited those around her and succeeding generations.

Magadha Sangmo recited the following verse while engaged in prayer to the Buddha:

MA LU SEM CHEN KUN GYI GON GYUR CHING
DU TE PUNG CHAY MI ZAY JOM DZAY LHA
NGO NAM MA LU YANG DA KYEN GYUR PAY
CHOM DEN KOR CHAY NAY DIR SHEG SU SOL

Protector of all beings without exception,
Divine subduer of innumerable negative forces,
Deity, perfect knower of all things,
Bhagawan and attendants, please come here.

Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity is reflected in the country’s packed calendar of events and festivals. Most of these celebrations have religious or cultural origins and many are also designated as either state or national holidays.

Celebrated by everyone in the country, the colourful festivities which observe the ethnic traditions and beliefs of the varied backgrounds of the population are what gives Malaysia the label of “Truly Asia” that it is so well known for.

The national events and festivals of Malaysia are occasions for family reunions and for joyful community get-togethers. They are world-class examples of how diversity can be inclusive and celebrated.

Many of these days of observation follow the lunar calendar, thus the dates they fall on vary from year to year.

Before our globalised world of jet-setting travel, cosmopolitan cities and urban migration, the entire region of the Malay archipelago was, for more than 600 years, an international destination for Arab, Indian and Chinese maritime traders and European explorers who, through the centuries, settled down for trade or for love in these parts, thus creating cosmopolitan communities.

A true melting pot, Malaysia is one of those rare places in the world where people of different ethnic origins, cultures, traditions and religious beliefs have infused harmoniously to form a distinct multicultural society.

This country’s rich heritage includes hundreds-of-years-old temples, churches and mosques — some of these located within doors of each other, others having in one place shrines dedicated to deities of different faiths or denominations. All of them have played a key role (and still do!) in shaping the nation by being centres for the community to convene and connect spiritually.

Thank you for sharing this story with us Pastor Niral. It is a very warm story that fills my heart with joy and warmth. Rinpoche had always taught us to focus out and take care of the people around us and this will bring us great joy. Our little actions will have an unimaginable impact on those people who are in need of warmth.

If you were in Flatwoods in Braxton Country, West Virginia around September 1952, chances are you would have been caught up in the hype surrounding the first sighting of an unknown creature. Back in 1952, the town of Flatwoods was practically unknown. Hence, the media of the time opted to name the controversial creature ‘the Braxton Country Monster’.

However, as interest in the creature grew, the media adopted the more geographically-correct name of ‘Flatwoods Monster’. It was also named ‘The Phantom of Flatwoods’ and ‘The Green Monster’.

The Flatwoods Monster is widely claimed to be some form of extra-terrestrial, primarily because it has been sighted near a large unidentified flying object (UFO).

In fact, due to the nature of the sighting, many ufologists consider it to be a close encounter of the third kind i.e. a UFO encounter in which at least one animated creature, in the form of humanoid or robot, is the pilot or occupant of the UFO.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

We were told by Uncle Wong he is very faithful toward Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden has extended help to him on several occasions and now Uncle Wong comes daily to make incense offerings to Dorje Shugden. He is grateful towards the help he was given.

His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche makes offering of khata to Dorje Shugden.
Trijang Rinpoche never gave up his devotion to Dorje Shugden no matter how much Tibetan government in exile pressured him to give up. He stayed loyal inspiring so many of us.

  • What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
