 Introduction

• There are 4 classes of tantras, one of which is the Lower Tantras.
• We practice the Lower Tantras to clear a specific problem that obstructs us from practicing Higher Tantras.
• The Medicine Buddha practice belongs to the Lower Tantras and is very efficacious for medical and health problems.
• In the Medicine Buddha practice, it is twice as important to think of the Guru and Yidam as being one in nature.
• To remove our pain and suffering, we need the blessings of all the lineage lamas. Therefore, if we think of the Guru and Yidam as one, and if we have faith and respect in the Guru, we effectively apply this to all the lineage lamas.

Lineage

• H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche received the oral transmission for this practice from:
    – H.H. Pabongka Dorje Chang in 1987 (mantra only)
    – H.E. Kensur Rinpoche Jetsun Jampa Yeshe in 1992 (full initiation)
    – H.E. Denma Locho Rinpoche (full initiation)

Altar Set Up & Offerings

• Place a Medicine Buddha statue (or picture) on the altar.
• Set up 8 sets of sensory offerings in the following manner.
• Starting from the back of the altar and working forward, place a row of 8 argham, followed by a row of 8 padhyam, then 8 pushpe, and so on, rather than consecutive rows of all 8 offerings.

• Set up additional water offerings to make up a total of 108 offering bowls.
• Place a Medicine Buddha Sutra text, wrapped in five-coloured cloth, on the left.
• Place a copy of the Medicine Buddha mandala (small or large) in a gyapi, on the altar.
• Place the Guru’s picture in front of the Medicine Buddha statue.
• Prepare eight tormas (any size) made from the 3 whites and the 3 sweets (milk, butter, yoghurt, sugar, molasses and honey) in the shape of tear drops.

The full sadhana is as follows:
1. Take Refuge
2. 35 Confessional Buddhas
3. 21x Migtsema (no need to do Guru Yoga)
4. Medicine Buddha Sadhana
5. Setrap Black Tea (if time allows)
6. Completion dedication
7. Yonten Shigyurma

This practice belongs to the Action Tantras. Because of this, it is best to abstain from black foods (meat, eggs, onions, garlic), intoxicants and sexual activity on the day of the puja (before and during the puja).

Ritual implements

One should have both dorje and bell, but no damaru or inner offering.

Note: Throughout the text, small symbols of bells   –@  or other instruments and handmudras appear in the margins to help the practitioner know when one should play these instruments or when to do certain mudras. It is hoped that these small indications will be helpful to those not yet familiar with these aspects of tantric practice. Other symbols and their meanings are:

The Concise Essence Sutra Ritual of
Bhagavan Medicine Buddha called

The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel

NAMO GURU MUNINDRAYA

The river of merely hearing your names
Makes even Avici’s hell-fires cool as a lotus pond.
Protectors in degenerate times, seven sugatas
And head of the Shakyas, to your feet I bow.

Distracted by activities of varying importance,
To benefit myself and those with faith in the life stories
Of these seven Buddhas for degenerate times,
I’ll condense the ambrosia sutra ritual to its molten essence.

Because of the infallibility of Arya Buddha’s proclamation that the power and blessings of the Medicine Buddhas are greater and swifter in degenerate times, we accept it. Having already made preparations as described in the sutra ritual, one who wishes to perform this quintessential ritual for invoking the heart commitment of the protectors during degenerate times, the seven sugatas, should recite as follows, fully infusing the mind with refuge and bodhicitta:

Refuge and Bodhicitta

Nature incorporating the entire body, speech, mind, qualities, and activity of all the tathagatas of the three times and ten directions, source of the 84 thousand collections of Dharmas, lord of all arya Sangha, I seek refuge in the kind and glorious holy root and lineage gurus.
I seek refuge in the completely enlightened lord Buddhas.
I seek refuge in the holy Dharma.
I seek refuge in the eight brothers gone to bliss, the lord Medicine Buddhas with their hosts of retinue deities.
I seek refuge in the glorious holy Protectors, Dharma Protector guardians endowed with the wisdom eye.  (3x)

I go for refuge until I am enlightened
To the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Supreme Assembly.
By my merit from giving and other perfections
May I become a Buddha to benefit all sentient beings.  (3x)

The Four Immeasurables

All sentient beings who, although self and all appearances are dharmadhatu by nature, have not realized it thus, I shall endow with happiness and the causes of happiness, I shall separate from suffering and the causes of suffering, I shall make inseparable from happiness without suffering, and I shall set in equanimity, the cause of well-being, free from attachment, aversion and partiality.  (3x)

The Power of Truth

Through the power of the supreme truth of the Buddhas’ and Bodhisattvas’ blessings,
The might of the two collections, and the purity of the dharmadhatu,
May this realm’s beings and environment be enriched like Sukhavati
With all the desirable perfections of both samsara and nirvana.

Offerings

Jeweled ground adorned with trees and with ponds
Whose bottoms are covered with gold, silver, and pearl dust;
Flowers strewn and sandalwood fragrance rising;
Human and divine enjoyments: Samantabhadra’s offerings everywhere.

There, in the centre of a charming jeweled palace
On lotuses and lion thrones, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abide.
May [everywhere] be filled with oceans of clouds of offerings, which they enjoy,
Born through the force of mantra, samadhi, and aspiration.

Invocation (with burning incense)

Compassionate protectors in degenerate times, seven sugatas,
Buddha Shakyamuni, holy Dharma, bodhisattvas, and guardians,
Invited as the support and protector refuge to protect others and myself:
–@  May you come here, gather, and grant your blessings.

If one wishes, one can insert an extensive bath offering here.

Requesting the Benefits of the Practice

The conquerors’ heart commitments were invoked
By thirty-six thousand sons of sugatas,
Including Manjushri, Kyab Dröl, and Vajrapani.
Thus requested, they proclaimed this sutra’s benefits.

Pray, manifest all of them for me here and now.
And to the worldly protector yaksha leaders as well,
As you promised to do before previous teachers –
To stop enemies, harmers, and epidemics,
Pacify all conflict, and increase physical and mental bliss,
Increase wealth, power, property, crops, and life span –
Accomplish these desired goals as we wish
And always protect us without break.

That was unprepared or degenerated
Or done with my deluded mind,
Please be patient with all of these.

Whatever the beings of this degenerate age have done
Of lesser merit mixed with ignorant delusions
That did not fulfill the aryas’ wishes,
Please be patient with these are well.

Under the influence of miserliness, lacking in skill,
Having made bad offerings or faulty arrangements,
O protector endowed with great compassion,
Please be patient with these as well.

Whatever was superfluous or left undone,
Degeneration in parts of the ritual,
Or whatever was forgotten,
Please be patient with these as well.

Request to Remain

By remaining here together with this image
For the sake of all migrators,

May you grant us long life without illness,
Power, and supreme attainment.

OM SUPRATISHTHA VAJRA YE SVAHA

Dedications

Just as the brave Manjushri and Samantabhadra, too,
Realized things as they are,
I too dedicate all these merits in the best way,
That I may follow their perfect example.

I dedicate all these roots of virtue
With the dedication praised as the best
By the victorious ones thus gone of the three times,
So I might perform good works.

Here one can do the multiplying mantras to increase the merits created.

Auspicious Verses

The hosts of Medicine Buddha deities
Pervading all directions of the round of space with perfection –
Some raining down multicoloured lotuses,
Some singing songs requesting goodness,
Some acting to conquer maras and obstructors,
And all bestowing on you supreme good fortune:
Know this full well and be very joyful
And I shall voice sweet melody expressing auspiciousness.
Supreme teacher of humans and gods,
Touching my crown to your feet of jeweled moonlight
Grants the glory of good fortune of kumuda flowers’ blossoming;
To Munindra, moon of expounders, I prostrate.

Manjushri and great abbot Shantarakshita,
Trisong Detsen, Atisha father and sons,
Second conqueror Losang Dragpa, and so on:
Through the auspiciousness of all collected good qualities
Of the supreme root and lineage gurus,
May all negativity and degeneration be ended,
And, bliss and goodness increasing like the waxing moon,
–@  May it be auspicious to enjoy the glory of perfection.

Accomplishing a supreme ocean of prayers invoking truth
During the teachings’ decline for protectorless beings
Who were untamed by other sun-like conquerors,
Through the auspiciousness of all collected good qualities
Of those seven sugatas, protectors during degenerate times,
May all negativity and degeneration be ended,
And, bliss and goodness increasing like the waxing moon,
–@  May it be auspicious to enjoy the glory of perfection.

Arising well from the broad lotus-like tongue
Of the lord of the able ones,
Especially exalted even in the later days of the Shakya’s teachings
Such that, if performed, one gains
The essence of immortality’s ambrosia:
Through the auspiciousness of all collected good qualities
Of that king of the vast and profound sutra pitaka,
May all negativity and degeneration be ended,
And, bliss and goodness increasing like the waxing moon,
–@  May it be auspicious to enjoy the glory of perfection.

Through the auspiciousness of all collected good qualities
Of those children of the lineage performing the sutra ritual
By simply reciting the names of the kings of doctors
Of all realms’ ten directions
And through the especially extensive prayers of the teacher Buddha and the sugatas:
May all negativity and degeneration be ended,
And, bliss and goodness increasing like the waxing moon,
–@  May it be auspicious to enjoy the glory of perfection.

Accomplished through the compassion mantra of the sugatas,
Through faith, samadhi, and words of truth, construction of jewels,
Abode of the Three Jewels beyond the three realms,
Through the auspiciousness of all collected good qualities
Of that supreme buddha-field equal to Sukhavati:
May all negativity and degeneration be ended,
And, bliss and goodness increasing like the waxing moon,
–@  May it be auspicious to enjoy the glory of perfection.

Yonten Shigyurma – The Foundation of All Realisations

Well realising that the root of the path,
the foundation for every realisation,
is to properly rely on my kind Gurus,
bless me to do so with great effort and devotion.

Knowing that this life of freedom, found but once,
is difficult to gain and greatly meaningful
bless me to develop the continual wish
all day and night to take its essence.

Mindful of death, this life disintegrates
as swiftly as a bubble in turbulent water
and after death my good and bad
karma follows me like my shadow.

Having gained firm certainty of this,
bless me to be ever conscientious
to abandon even the slightest harm
and practise every possible virtue.

Enjoying deceptive samsaric pleasure
brings no contentment and is the door to all suffering.
aware of its drawbacks, bless me to develop
a strong wish for the bliss of liberation.

With mindfulness, introspection, and great care
induced by that pure aspiration
bless me to make my essential practice
the Pratimoksha, root of Buddha’s teachings.

Just as I’ve fallen in this sea of suffering
so have all beings, my kind mothers;
seeing this, bless me to train in Bodhicitta,
taking up the burden of liberating them.

And yet, just wishing this, without practicing
the three ethics, Enlightenment cannot be attained.
knowing this well, please bless me to intensively
strive to train in the Bodhisattva vows.

Properly analysing the correct object
and pacifying distraction to mistaken objects
bless me to swiftly realise the path
which unifies quiescence and special insight.

When I’m a pure vessel, trained in common paths,
bless me to enter with perfect ease
the sacred gateway of fortunate ones,
the supreme of vehicles, Vajrayana.

Then, foundation for the two attainments
is keeping the pure vows and commitments.
having found unfeigned conviction in this
bless me to guard them with my life.

Having precisely understood the essentials
of the two stages, heart of the tantras,
bless me to strive without break in four sessions
to practise Yoga as taught by holy Masters.

May the spiritual guides who reveal this excellent path
and the friends who practise it all live long.
Please grant blessings that outer and inner
hindrances all be fully pacified.

In all lives may I never be parted
from perfect Masters and enjoy the glory of Dharma.
Perfecting realisations of the paths and stages,
may I swiftly gain the state of Vajradhara.

THE KINDNESS OF THE MEDICINE BUDDHAS

Medicine Buddha is a Buddha Doctor whose function is to release living beings from outer and inner sickness by bestowing blessings upon them. Buddha’s Truth Body, or Dharmakaya, appears in the form of Medicine Buddha, with a blue-coloured body, one face and two hands, holding a jewelled bowl and a medicinal plant.

By relying upon Medicine Buddha sincerely, living beings in these impure times can be cured of heavy physical and mental disease, and find release from the internal pain of the three poisons: attachment, anger and ignorance. They can also receive protection from many other dangers and obstacles.

In the dedication prayer at the end of the Medcine Buddha sadhana it says:

Through my virtues from prostrating, making offerings, and reciting the names of the Assembly of Seven Sugatas,
May the supreme prayers that they previously made –
The two sets of eight, the four sets of four, and the twelve promises –
Immediately ripen upon me and all other living beings.

Du Fu (712-770 AD), also known as Tu Fu, was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty, often considered one of the greatest alongside Li Bai. He was a poet-historian and a poet-sage, known for his realistic depictions of human suffering and reflections on the troubled times of his era. His poems, reflecting his personal experiences and the political instability of the time, have had a lasting impact on both Chinese and Japanese literary traditions.
    Interesting read.

H H Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo is by far one of the most popular and influential Gelug religious figures of the 20th Century. One of Phabongkha’s most important aristocratic students, Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom Tsering relationship to her teacher and his lineage teachings goes along way .She is famously remembered for is her unwavering devotion towards her guru, HH Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Yangdzom Tsering’s Shatra family were ancient sponsors and students of the Gelug tradition and had apparently been patrons of Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelug school. The life stories of Lady Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom as mentioned by Joona Repo is indeed inspiring. How her life struggles with tragedies, and her devotion to dorje Shugden and the Gelug tradition throughout her life.

Looking at these pictures remained me of my first pilgrimage to Wu Tai San. With the blessings of our guru, we able to visit Wu Tai San a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site . In fact it never did come to my mind that I am fortunate given a chance to go as I am still very new then. Upon hearing about the pilgrimage I got myself register without much thought. The history and stories of Wu Tai San has inspired me to go there. Interesting the Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of China are closely connected to WuTai San. Wu Tai San located in Shanxi Province, China renowned as the home of Lord Manjushri the bodhisattva of wisdom, with different emanations of the bodhisattva residing on each of the five peaks. The area is dotted with over 50 temples and monasteries, many of which are historical and architecturally significant. Those temples built over 7 dynasties housing numerous Buddhist relics. Wutai Shan also offers stunning scenery, including snow-capped peaks, forests, and streams. Wu Tai San is one of the four Sacred Buddhist mountains of China, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wutai Shan was known to be a mystical and sacred site inhabited by divine spirits, accompanied by unusual events, such as miraculous light appearances at night.
We visited all the Holy sites, making offerings and doing prayers at each sites. We even have the opportunity to collect holy stones for future statue insertion or to keep on our altars. Times flies as our pilgrimage ended with so many stories to share with the rest.
Thank you Rinpoche and writes team sharing those pictures.

Padmasambhava, the Lotus-born Guru, also known as Guru Rinpoche is a legendary tantric Buddhist master who is widely revered in Tibetan Buddhism. He is seen as the second Buddha particularly within the Nyingma .He was a legendary Indian Buddhist mystic credited with introducing Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. As found in Buddhist scriptures Padmasambhava birth is often associated with legends and prophecies. Interesting…… Padmasambhava is depicted with eight manifestations, each reflecting a different aspect of his miraculous activities. Interesting article .

Milarepa Cave, situated high in the Himalayan mountain of Tibet, a sacred cave beckons pilgrims and spiritual seekers from across the globe. Milarepa Cave, a site of profound significance in Tibetan Buddhism, is merely a geological wonder. This sacred cave is also a living testament to the power of meditation and devotion. Its where an 11th-century yogi and poet who spent transformative years in solitary practice. Milarepa Cave graces Tibet’s rugged yet stunning landscapes, a region renowned for its deep spiritual heritage and breath-taking natural beauty. The cave’s importance is inseparable from a revered figure and the enduring legacy of Jetsun Milarepa a revered yogi and poet in Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa Cave stands not just as a geological formation but as a powerful symbol of spiritual transformation and the enduring strength of Tibetan Buddhism. Reading this interesting cave had me Google for more information about this sacred cave. Numerous stories and legends surround Milarepa’s time in the cave, enhancing its mystical aura.

I wanted to take a moment to share a recent experience with you regarding my Instagram account. Unfortunately, my account was hacked, which was both frustrating and disappointing. Losing access to something that plays a significant role in my business and personal connections was incredibly stressful. What made the situation even more challenging was discovering that Meta does not have a dedicated support team to assist users facing account compromises. With so many people experiencing this issue daily, it’s alarming that their recovery process is not more accessible or efficient. After numerous failed attempts to recover my account through Meta’s standard procedures, I was fortunate enough to get in touch with a member of the Meta recovery department, @Rothsteincode on X (formerly Twitter), and via email at rothsteincode@gmail.com Their expertise and guidance were invaluable, and thanks to their assistance, I was able to regain full access to my account.
While I am incredibly grateful for their help, this experience has highlighted a major issue—Meta needs to implement better security measures and provide more reliable support for users dealing with these kinds of problems. The lack of direct customer support is unacceptable, considering how vital social media platforms have become for businesses and individuals alike.I wanted to share this with you in case you or anyone you know ever faces a similar issue. If you ever find yourself in this unfortunate situation, I highly recommend reaching out to @Rothsteincode for assistance. Hopefully, Meta will take action to improve their security policies and customer service in the near future.Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay safe online, and let’s continue to support each other in this digital space.

A great history of a great yogi which I do enjoy reading , reading over it again and again. Jetsun Milarepa was a famous Tibetan siddha, known as a murderer when he was a young man. Who later turning to Buddhism and becoming a highly accomplished Buddhist disciple. Generally considered as one of Tibet’s most famous yogis and spiritual poets, whose teachings are known among several schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa’s story is one of struggle, anguish, resolve, and triumph all of which make him recognizably. Practicing these teachings for many years in isolated mountain retreats in caves such as caves hidden deep in the mountains of Tsum Valley. That’s where Milarepa attained enlightenment and gained fame for his incredible perseverance in practice and for his spontaneous songs of realisation. Milarepa is said to be the first to achieve the state of Vajradhara in one lifetime. That’s incredible.
Thank you Rinpoche for great sharing interesting read

H.H Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was a Gelug Lama, a sharp analyst, master of philosophical debate and a Tantric practitioner. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was a disciple of the third Trijang Rinpoche, junior tutor of the 14th Dalai Lama. Rinpoche was known as a strong, detached and wrathful lama having impeccable knowledge of all rituals, art and science. Thousands of Westerners have received and benefited from his teachings both in the West and in India and gave many empowerments and teachings as well. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was renowned for his many actions of powerful magic . We are fortunate and blessed listening to the powerful voice of Kyabje Zong Rinpoche’s precious teachings as in this blog.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Visiting Tibet, holy Gaden Monastery is everyone dream and a once life time. Of course if we have the means to visit again will be great. End of December 2008 and early January 2009 our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche with a small group students visited Tibet. Thousands of pilgrims, visitors and tourists around the world have visited this incredible holy land for the last 600 years. Tsem Rinpoche visited Tibet for the first time with an oxygen tank. I am fortunate to visit this holy place with my Dharma brothers and sisters years back.
With our Guru blessing we went without any without any hitch. Visited most of the monasteries and could feel the powerful energies there. Looking at those pictures in this blog reminds me of trip there.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Interesting….. a ground breaking documentary by world BBC where everyone should watch. BBC did mentioned and documented that Jesus was a Buddhist monk and that he had spent some years in India. I would not know about this till I came across this blog. Many people most probably too. Interesting watch one should not miss. Jesus was a religious leader revered in Christianity, one of the world’s major religions. He is regarded by most Christians as the Incarnation of God. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus was well acquainted with Buddhism. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus knew about Buddhism. Other evidence, while perhaps apocryphal, indicates that he spent most of his so-called lost years outside Judea, possibly in Kashmir to study Buddhism exclusively.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

The Great Buddhas of Bamiyan were two monumental Buddhist statues built around 600 CE. A holy site for Buddhists on the Silk Road, historically a caravan route linking the markets of China with those of the Western world. The two most prominent statues were the giant standing sculptures of the Buddhas .It was the site of several Buddhist monasteries where monks at the monasteries lived as hermits. It was until in 2001, both statues were destroyed by the Taliban . Before being blown up in 2001, they were the largest examples of standing Buddha carvings in the world .Buddhism was eliminated in Afghanistan by the 13th century during the Mongol conquests. Sadly all statues depicting humans in Afghanistan was destroyed. They were perhaps the most famous cultural landmarks of the region, and the site was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Despite the Buddhas’s destruction, the ruins continue to be a popular culture landmark, where many locals, pilgrims and tourist visit the site.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting blog.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
