Who is Kache Marpo

(By Tsem Rinpoche)

Kache Marpo is a very ancient Buddhist deity originating from the time of Guru Rinpoche, a thousand years ago. Kache Marpo was installed as one of the Dharma Protectors in Samye Monastery by Guru Rinpoche in the past, as one of the protective divinities to help increase the growth of Dharma in the country of Tibet and the surrounding areas. Kache Marpo is considered an emanation of Hayagriva, which makes him a fully accomplished enlightened being and also a Buddha who appears in a worldly form.

Kache Marpo has a red face, three eyes and two arms. He gnaws his lower lip with his upper teeth and has bared fangs to scare away obstacles and maras. He wears the helmet of an ancient warrior with five flags fluttering in the wind, representing the five Dhyani Buddhas. In ancient times, warriors would wear flags on their backs to denote who they are, where they are from, their rank, and so on. He wears a full set of leather mail on his body which enables him to stop arrows and other projectiles that are shot at him. But in Dharma terms, it represents that he is impenetrable because he has achieved full enlightenment.

In his right hand which is swinging up in the air, he holds a long spear and in his left hand, he holds a noose. The noose is dragging a human-like form, which represents our negative karma, our sufferings, our problems, and our pains in samsara. The human is bound and tied, meaning that Kache Marpo has the power to bind our obstacles. He pierces the human with the long spear held in his right hand, further enforcing his ability to destroy our obstacles.

He rides on a horse over an ocean of blood. The blood represents all suffering that is inherently existent in samsara and the projections within samsara. When he rides over this ocean, it signifies that he is above and beyond any type of suffering.

A very simple visualization that you can do during Kache Marpo’s practice is to visualize that from every pore of his body, psychic flames erupt and spew into the ten directions to announce his arrival.

In the Nyingma tradition, he is very much worshipped in the form of Tsiu Marpo. Later when Dorje Shugden manifested, Tsiu Marpo saw the benefits of Dorje Shugden’s practice and activities, and on his own free will, he took an oath to become one of Dorje Shugden’s ministers. So, he is practiced within the Nyingma tradition as Tsiu Marpo and within the Gelugpa tradition as Kache Marpo.

In Tibet, there are many famous Kache Marpo oracles. They can come in peaceful or wrathful form, and are very well known for the accuracy of their advice. Even though they are oracles of Kache Marpo, when the oracle takes trance, Dorje Shugden the King will enter first. After the King leaves, Kache Marpo will then come and speak on behalf of the King (Dorje Shugden).

There is a very famous oracle in Tibet called the Panglung Oracle, whose picture I have included here. During the Cultural Revolution in 1959, he was consulted by H.H. Trijang Rinpoche for the safety of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. When he was consulted, Dorje Shugden entered first, then Kache Marpo entered and pronounced that the Dalai Lama should leave Tibet immediately. This event is well recorded by the monks who witnessed this as well as the monks who actually carried the messages back and forth. So, one of the most famous Kache Marpo oracles in Tibet who was very, very well known for his accuracy was the one who gave the prophecy that the Dalai Lama should leave Tibet.

You don’t have to do Kache Marpo’s practice separately. When you do the Dorje Shugden practice, he is automatically included. Having said that, Kache Marpo can and has been practiced as a separate Protector in his own right because he is highly qualified. This also speaks very highly of Dorje Shugden that another highly qualified Protector would submit himself to Dorje Shugden’s ways and methods of increasing the Dharma.

I have included here some short write-ups about the history and iconography of Kache Marpo, some pictures of him for download, and also some praises written by high lamas such as His Holiness the Fifth Dalai Lama and so on for your convenience.

I hope this gives a little bit of information on this benevolent and very effective Dharma Protector who also happens to be the attendant of Dorje Shugden.

Tsem Rinpoche

The 6th Panglung Oracle was famous in Tibet for his clear and accurate prophecies when taking trance of Dorje Shugden and Kache Marpo. It was from the advice of Dorje Shugden through this oracle that H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama escaped Tibet in 1959

Before the 6th Panglung Kuten came the 5th Panglung Kuten, as pictured here. Although he was not a relative / family member of the 6th and current 7th Panglung Kuten, nevertheless he also took powerful trances of Dorje Shugden and Kache Marpo, as did the Panglung oracles before him.

Who is Kache Marpo?

Kache Marpo is one of Dorje Shugden’s main attendants and is said to be an emanation of Hayagriva. Kache Marpo assists Dorje Shugden in carrying out his Dharma instructions and activities, and assists us in overcoming inner and outer obstacles to our spiritual practice. Even though Kache Marpo takes on the form of a worldly Protector, in actuality his true nature is the wrathful form of Avalokiteshvara. Thus Kache Marpo is an enlightened Dharma Protector and as such, has his own set of pujas, offerings and rituals which can be used to propitiate him and invoke his blessings.

The Gelugs are not the only tradition of Tibetan Buddhism which has relied upon Kache Marpo. Kache Marpo was known to and propitiated by the Sakyas in the form of Tsiu Marpo. They propitiated Tsiu Marpo along with Dorje Setrap and Dorje Shugden, who together formed Gyalpo Sum (The Three Kings) who were the main Protectors of the Sakya lineage.

In his present role as a Gelug Protector and powerful acolyte of Dorje Shugden, it is said that Kache Marpo waits on his horse outside Dorje Shugden’s celestial abode, to carry out the King’s (Dorje Shugden’s) instructions and lead the fight against our obstacles.

Kache Marpo, the powerful acolyte and minister of Dorje Shugden who is an emanation of Hayagriva and an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. Kache Marpo serves Dorje Shugden, carrying out his instructions and assisting him. Since Kache Marpo assists Dorje Shugden in protecting the teachings of the Gelug tradition, in this thangka, Lama Tsongkhapa is depicted as above Hayagriva

Iconography

Kache Marpo’s abode is described to be “A brilliant, splendid brown palace made of leather, which is surrounded by a red ocean formed by the blood of horses and men”.

The color of his body is similar to the vibrance produced when the sun shines on a huge mountain of coral, bright red and luminous. He has the shape of a “son of devas”, with one face and two hands. In his right hand he brandishes a red, sharp lance, with which he pierces the heart of our negative karma and wrong views, rendering them impotent. His left hand holds a noose that is wound around the neck of an obstacle-creating demon. Kache Marpo appears as a Tibetan warrior adorned with a leather cuirass and helmet decorated with victory banners of silk in nine colors.

His facial expression is very wrathful. He gnaws his lower lip in perpetual fury and haste, showing his impatience to help us destroy our obstacles and the causes of our suffering. His three eyes that represent his ability to perceive the past, present and future, throb with red-gleaming veins as they stare with full hatred at obstructors and evil-doers. He rides a very fierce horse, which possesses magical qualities and mounted with a precious saddle, belt and other accessories.

Oracles and Trances

The 7th Panglung Oracle taking trance of Kache Marpo in Serpom Monastery. He just like his father the 6th Panglung Oracle is respected for his clear prophetic answers and ease of trance signifying pure practice and clean samaya

Kache Marpo takes trance in qualified oracles to support practitioners by giving accurate prophecies, sound advice, blessings and healing of diseases, depending on what is necessary. Kache Marpo consistently displays great patience and offers his assistance to sincere Dharma practitioners.

Kache Marpo usually takes trance peacefully through an oracle to give instructions and advice. He will always check with Dorje Shugden before giving out any advice to practitioners. Having great respect for Dorje Shugden, it is witnessed during trance that Kache Marpo always refers to him as ‘The Great King’.

Kache Marpo takes trance in the current Panglung Kuten (Kuten means oracle in Tibetan), who was trained by His Holiness Trijang Dorje Chang and currently resides in Taiwan. He also takes trance in the Gameng Kuten in the USA. In Tibet, the previous Panglung Kuten who lived in Panglung Retreat near Sera Monastery, Lhasa was very famous and many people including H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama, H.H. Trijang Rinpoche, dignitaries and high officials would consult him for advice and guidance.

Hundreds of visitors in Serpom Monastery await their turn to receive blessings directly from Kache Marpo

When the oracle takes trance of Kache Marpo, he may appear wrathful or peaceful depending on the location he is in as well as the ‘requirements’ of the audience. If the people in a certain area are aggressive, full of anger and stubborn, Kache Marpo will take on a wrathful disposition. On the other hand, if the people are compassionate, loving and patient, Kache Marpo will appear in a calm and peaceful form.

At times, Dorje Shugden and Kache Marpo will not remain for long during the trance and may not even accept the offerings presented. This occurs when, through their clairvoyance, Dorje Shugden and Kache Marpo know that the people in the audience who are seeking divine help will not adhere to the advice given. Thus, out of compassion, Dorje Shugden and Kache Marpo do not stay for long so that these people do not accumulate further negative karma by disobeying the instructions given.

A Brief History of Kache Marpo

Kache Marpo as Tsiu Marpo who was practiced by the Sakyas. This drawing may be found in the central gonkhang at Tengyeling Monastery, Lhasa.

Invite home a beautiful Kache Marpo thangka from VajraSecrets

Kache Marpo is one of the Seven Blazing Brothers who arose from the Tsiu Marpo pantheon and belongs to the ‘tsen‘ classification of Protectors. Prior to the 17th century, Kache Marpo was typically depicted as a minor figure until His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama popularized his practice during his reign. The Fifth Dalai Lama’s collected works contain a short propitiation to the Yaksha Kache Marpo (in volume Da folios 147a5-149a5), and also contain writings that support this history of how Kache Marpo came to be. The works also have descriptions of Kache Marpo that closely matches the attendant deity found in Dorje Shugden rituals.

Newer research by Christopher Paul Bell also confirms Kache Marpo as the enlightened Tsiu Marpo. Christopher Bell’s recent work, “Tsiu Marpo: The Career of a Tibetan Protector Deity” mentions that one of the 6 ‘demons’ that formed from Tsiu Marpo’s body is known as the ‘Rock Might Demon‘ who comes from the red highlands. This description is in sync with the account of Kache Marpo as coming from the ‘mansion of the high rising copper red mountains’ in “The abbreviated torma offerings and request for activity of Powerful Tsen Go Kache Marpo called Sport of the Slaughterer” written by H.H. Trijang Rinpoche. Christopher Bell’s thesis statement that the ‘Rock Might Demon‘ is ‘Overlord of the Red Copper Rock‘ further supports the derivation that the rock might demon is Kache Marpo that manifested from Tsiu Marpo’s body. Lastly, the iconography of the ‘Rock Might Demon‘ (on p50 of Bell’s thesis) is identical to Kache Marpo’s except for the sword, which ‘Rock Might Demon‘ holds (Kache Marpo wields a lance).

Tsiu Marpo

Tsiu Marpo is a ‘subjugated’ Tibetan worldly god of the warrior class (drala). Tsiu Marpo functioned as a Buddhist protector deity of Samyé Monastery (est. 779 C.E.), the oldest Buddhist monastery in Tibet, when the previous Protector, Pehar Gyalpo, was transferred to Nechung Monastery just outside Lhasa. Tsiu Marpo, commonly recognized as a worldly Protector, is the head of the Seven Blazing Brothers. His practice was popularized by the Nyingma teacher Ngari Panchen Pema Wangyal (1487-1542). In essence, Tsiu Marpo is Tamdrin (Hayagriva) and it was Padmasambhava who bestowed empowerments and gave Tsiu Marpo his secret name of Kunkyap Dorje Drakpotsel, meaning “The Power of the Fierce, All-pervading Vajra”.

Tsiu Marpo is said to have first manifested as Lise Chorpa from the land of Li. He was a high practitioner who lived in the forest and due to a misunderstanding, was mistaken to be a dangerous man. Blinded by fear, people hunted him down and the king, in a fit of fear, decapitated him with his royal sword. However, due to the power of his attainments, the various parts of his body – flesh, bones, heart, fluids and so forth – arose as the Seven Blazing Brothers, of which Tsiu Marpo is the chief.

Kache Marpo a.k.a. Tsiu Marpo is very much practiced within the Nyingma lineage up till the present day. You will see his depiction in many Nyingma temples.

Prayers to Kache Marpo written by various Great Masters

************************************************

Praise to Yaksha Kache Marpo, the Doctrine’s Watchman
by H.H. the 5th Dalai Lama

Riding on a saddled precious horse
Having the power of the wind,
Traversing the universe in an instant,
Praise to Yaksha Kache Marpo, the doctrine’s watchman.

Furious mighty being biting the lower lip,
Three eyes blazing the sun and moon watching enemies,
Emanating messengers taking the life of false guides,
Praise to the liberator of the ten enemies.

Wearing leather armor, banners, colored garb and
Leather helmet with a victory banner, treasury of nine good signs,
Tying enemies with a lasso, piercing their hearts with a lance,
Praise to you and your retinue.

Mantra of Kache Marpo: OM SHRI DHARMAPHALA

These praises are extracted from a ritual to Kache Marpo written by the Fifth Dalai Lama (5DL, Volume Da folios 147r-148r). According to the colophon, Kache Marpo requested the Fifth Dalai Lama to write this ritual. Kache Marpo is most commonly known as Dorje Shugden’s minister (ODT, 143).

Trode Khangsar is Dorje Shugden’s Ashokan Pillar. According to the White Conch Dictionary, it was established by the Fifth Dalai Lama himself. Management of Trode Khangsar was entrusted to Riwo Choling monastery, a Gelug monastery in Lhoka. On the same lot of Trode Khangsar was a small shrine called Monkyi Khangsar (smon skyid khang gsar) where Kache Marpo was invoked via oracle (WCD, 1312).

Abbreviated Torma Offering and Request for Activity of Powerful Tsen Go Kache Marpo called Sport of the Slaughterer
by Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang

HUNG
From the stirred-up ocean of dark red blood. Land of Tsen
From the mansion of the high rising copper red mountain
The great agent attendant of Dorje Shugden
Tsen Go Kache Marpo, come now hither!

In center of a palace emanated from awesome power and wrath
On the red supreme horse endowed with magical strength
With whatever emanation, O fearsome hero
In order to perform the yogi’s activity, remain stably here!

An ocean of food and drink of humans and gods and
Amassed torma of slain enemies and obstructers flesh and blood
Blessed into the nature of undefiled nectar
I offer to the great wild Tsen and retinue.

Desirable close offerings, Eight Auspicious Substances and Symbols
Seven Royal objects, Vajra mail and armor
Ornaments, clothing, mounts and favored visual animal offering*
Outer and Inner samaya substances lacking in nothing.

Made desirable through blessing with samadhi, mantra and mudra
This, with nature of the Samantabhadra sky treasure,
Accept and restore degenerated samaya without exception
And be wholly fulfilled in your stern heart commitment!

Of great power to subdue the Teachings’ enemies and vow breakers
With terrible wrath, inexhaustible as the sky
Fierce King of Tsen, Kache Mar
Great enemy destroying protector, praise to you!

Formerly those Vidyadharas, the root and lineage Gurus
Placed the drawing of the insurmountable vajra to your crown
And placed the supreme taste of nectar on your tongue,
Remember the stern commitment they proclaimed and
Spread in ten directions the teaching and practice of the
Excellent system of Tsongkhapa, quintessence of millions of Buddha’s Teachings,
Ensure long life of the hosts of sublime sustainers of the teachings,
And ripen the essence of their intended benefit and bliss!

Cause the Sangha communities to be harmonious and of pure moral discipline,
And Dharma, endowments and desirables to flourish like the summer ocean,
Without even the words sickness, weapons or famine,
And the land to be endowed with happiness and auspiciousness!

On all enemies and obstructers with poisonous hateful winds
Towards the Teachings, its Holders, sponsors, sponsored and this monastic abode
Rain down a hundred thousand powerful vajra weapons,
And grind them to atoms of dust without trace!

Especially since we, at all times, rely on you
Practice you, request you and make offerings to you
When we call you by name, Wild Tsen, don’t harden your ears
When we beckon you don’t be unclear of sight!

When set on an enemy, Tsen, don’t slow your horse!
When exhorted to action don’t be weak in power and might!
Show smiling face and give rise to signs of accomplishment!
Kill hateful enemies, subdue harmful spirits and obstructers

Dispel without exception undesirable bad conditions and obstacles
Such as sickness, weapons, spells and unpleasant conversation
Generate life, glory, proclaim good reputation,
Cause our people, wealth and livestock to flourish, fulfill our every hope!

In short, in all places, paths or activities
Accompany us, never parted, like a body and its shadow
Protect through the six periods of day and night unwaveringly
And swiftly accomplish our desired enlightening activities!

[This prayer offering may be combined with the extensive ‘kangso’ of Dorje Shugden or as a separate practice by itself.]

Prayer Offering of the Wild Tsen Kache Marpo
by Ngawang Lozang Jorden

[For those who wish to perform a brief prayer offering to the Protector of Riwo Choling, the Wild Tsen (Tsen Go) Kache Marpo, first arrange offerings and tormas as usual. Also have a rising white cloud of white incense smoke. Recite prayers of refuge and bodhicitta three times. Then having generated oneself in the form of the Yidam, bless the kangwa (fulfillment ritual) substances, offerings and tormas as in highest yoga tantra. Then continue: Purify with…]

OM SOBHAWA SHUDDHA SARWA DHARMA SOBHAWA SHUDDHO HAM

From within emptiness before me, inside a red copper mountain which soars toward heaven, in the midst of a wave stirred red ocean of horse and human blood, inside a frightening and splendid maroon varnished leather castle is emanated Dharmapala Wild Tsen Kache Marpo in color like a coral mountain embraced by sunlight, one face, two hands; in the right an upraised sharp red spear marked by a banner pierces the hearts of those with degenerated samaya.

The left holds at the heart a red tsen spirit noose lassoing the waist of enemies and obstructers. He wears leather mail and leather helmet and is adorned by nine stacked victory banners. Face very fierce, he bites his lower lip. His red veined eyes dart and glare at enemies and obstructers. On a very fierce red topaz hued magically powerful horse adorned with upper and lower bound saddle he sits with any variety of manner, marked by OM at crown, AH at throat and HUNG at heart. By light rays emanating from the HUNG at my heart, from the land of Tsen, The Supreme Abode Enjoying Overwhelming Power and Wrath, the Wild Tsen Kache Marpo along with his retinue is instantly invited to this place.

HUNG
From The Supreme Abode Enjoying Overwhelming Power and Wrath,
O Supreme Minister of Dorje Shugden’s command,
That Great King who protects the Second Conqueror’s teaching,
Wild Tsen Kache Marpo, pray come!

In nature all Buddhas, never transgressing,
The lotus skull rosary of instructions and precepts,
To protect the Teachings and destroy enemies and obstructers,
Pray come to this yogi’s/yogini’s pleasant abode!

Having well received clouds of offerings pure in faith and commitments,
For sake of swiftly achieving the four enlightening actions,
O Red Yaksha of unbearably fierce wrath,
Pray come unobstructed along with your retinue!

TZA HUNG BAM HO
They become non-dual with the commitment beings.

THE PROPITIATION

HUNG
O Attendant to the general Yidam mandalas
Holding power over life, Wild Tsen Kache Mar,
For activity, protect the Buddha’s Teachings and,
For sustenance, eat this amassed flesh and blood of enemies!

Prostration and praise to the Powerful Dregpa,
Who cuts down enemies, obstructors and vow breakers,
Accept these outer, inner and secret offerings and,
Please grant attainment of supreme enjoyment!

[Recite the hundred syllable mantra]

O Second Conqueror Tsong Khapa inseparable,
From Vajradhara and Padmasambhava,
Assemblies of direct and lineage Gurus,
And host of Yidams with retinues please listen!

Under influence of ignorance’s deception,
Our three doors are overpowered by deluded minds,
All transgressions of enlightened body, speech and mind, and the precepts,
With intense regret we reveal and purify.

Especially transgressions of precepts and missing of,
Powerful Protectors, your offerings, tormas and restoring-fulfilling rituals,
And not thanking you for accomplishment of requested activity, etc.,
The collection of faults transgressing your mind I sincerely confess.

Through confessing to you Yakshas, red lords over life,
Having purified all collections of faults,
Accompany us like a body and its shadow,
And always care for us with the four activities!

THE FULFILLMENT RITUAL

HUNG
With argham of blood, flowers of sense organs,
Incense from human flesh and blazing lamps from human fat,
Perfume of bile and food of flesh and bone, and sound of
Frightful majestic music of thigh bones and skull drums, with these
Tsen Go Kache Marpo, may your heart commitment be fulfilled,
And host of attendant slaughterers may your heart commitment be fulfilled,
Having fulfilled the heart commitment of the whole retinue host,
Dispel contrary conditions and accomplish enlightening activity.

Wild yaks, goats, sheep, birds, dogs, lions, and elephants,
Flying throughout the sky and slinking all over the ground,
And the mount of the supreme horse who instantly circles the billion worlds,
With upper and lower bound saddle and strength of the wind, with these
Tsen Go Kache Marpo, may your heart commitment be fulfilled,
And host of attendant slaughterers may your heart commitment be fulfilled.
Having fulfilled the heart commitment of the whole retinue host,
Dispel contrary conditions and accomplish enlightening activity.

Mail of leather, banners radiant in five colors and designs,

Tsen Go Kache Marpo, may your heart commitment be fulfilled,
And host of attendant slaughterers may your heart commitment be fulfilled,
Having fulfilled the heart commitment of the whole retinue host,
Dispel contrary conditions and accomplish enlightening activity.

Tormas, tsog, tea and beer swirling like a mountain lake,
Fringed parasols, victory banners, canopies and garlands,
Mon and Indian outfits such as dancers’ masks,
Life essence crystal, life wheel mantra, with these outer, inner and secret bases,
Tsen Go Kache Marpo, may your heart commitment be fulfilled,
And host of attendant slaughterers may your heart commitment be fulfilled,
Having fulfilled the heart commitment of the whole retinue host,
Dispel contrary conditions and accomplish enlightening activity.

Mount Meru, four continents, subcontinents, sun and moon,
Eight auspicious substances and symbols, seven precious objects,
Next precious seven, and five objects of desire,
With all the wealth of humans and gods
Tsen Go Kache Marpo, may your heart commitment be fulfilled,
And host of attendant slaughterers may your heart commitment be fulfilled,
Having fulfilled the heart commitment of the whole retinue host,
Dispel contrary conditions and accomplish enlightening activity.

In the Nyingma tradition, Kache Marpo is very much worshipped in the form of Tsiu Marpo.

Kache Marpo is an enlightened dharma protector and is said to be an emanation of Hayagriva. Kache Marpo serves Dorje Shugden, as a minister following instructions and assists Dorje Shugden in protecting the teachings of the Gelug tradition. The Nyingma practiced as Tsiu Marpo, Sakyas and Gelugpa tradition, all relied on Kache Marpo as dharma protector. Kache Marpo takes trance of the qualified oracles he may give prophecies, advice, blessings and healing of diseases. When Kache Marpo takes trance, he may appear wrathful or peaceful forms depending on the situation. Interesting read.
Thank you Rinpoche with folded hands.

    Dear friends,

Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.

You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.

Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.

May you be safe, protected and blessed.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden

This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.

The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

A Daily Request for Wealth, Peace and Protection

    Composed by H.E. Tsem Rinpoche

In the heavens there are myriad manifestations of the divine. All those manifestations specifically show us different aspects of divinity in order to be of benefit to all living beings. All the rupakaya forms of the divine have compassion, skillful means and wisdom. We invoke upon them whether we are happy, sad, down, lost, fulfilled, confused, empty, and during the whole range of emotions we constantly experience due to an untrained mind.

Understanding our nature, Great Wisdom Being Dorje Shugden, therefore all the more so, please hold us close to your bosom as an only child to a parent.

Though the manifestations of the divine need no offerings and gifts from us, we offer you supreme Manjushri Dorje Shugden a libation of tea, incense and mantras, in order to ask you to bless us, to be a part of our lives, to abide in our dwellings and to give us signs, omens and portents of both good and bad. When the negative arises, quell them immediately. Please increase the positive for my weary and worn mind as I lay my hopes in you.

When difficulties, problems and confusion arise, we ask you, who is but the culmination of all that is powerful, holy and omniscient to bless myself, family, loved ones, environment and even my pets. May I see wisdom, find hope, and be at peace.

I request you, O Divine Bhagavān Dorje Shugden, who wears a round dome hat and the three robes of a saffroned bhikshu, who wields a sword of liberty, justice and wisdom and clutches a wish-fulfilling jewel, who rides on a supreme lion of subjugation of all that is negative, to fulfill my wishes. I understand my wishes may not be the best, so I surrender to your wisdom for the outcome though it may not be what I have in mind. Please bless myself and everyone that we may enter into the supreme city of liberation.

Great Bhagavān Dorje Shugden, I request you sincerely from my heart to be a part of my life, bless my home, and grant me wisdom, solace and comfort, that I might be of service to others without agenda, and that I may focus out onto others and not be fixated on myself, creating more problems for all that I hold dear.

Bless me to become kinder, wiser, more compassionate, tolerant and very forgiving to all those who hurt and love me. In order to become close to you, Dorje Shugden, we must surrender the banal. We must abandon fixed views, projections and rigidity. Lastly, in my final moment when I leave this plane of existence, only the positive actions I have done will matter as everything and everyone will be left behind. Let me realise this and act upon this now! At this crucial moment, please may I have a vision of yourself, the powerful and merciful Dorje Shugden, to take me to where I may course in the sky to continue my journey of spiritual waxing.

I offer you saffron-coloured tea and my faith to fulfill my prayers and gain siddhis. By reciting your mantra, may healing, peace, love, long life, protection and perfect view of sunyata arise.

Mantra of fulfillment, peace and wisdom:

    OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA

(It is good to recite this mantra daily as much as you like or your timing allows.)

I dedicate this supreme heartfelt prayer to the all-knowing Celestial and Supreme Protector Dorje Shugden, that I may quickly become a being of light, compassion, love and enlightenment.

Please play the audio included here to follow along with the prayer.

For the first time available, Dorje Shugden and his entourage of 32 asssistants of his mandala.

Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.

Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-

    1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-

    – Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
    – Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
    – Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
    – Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
    – Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.

    2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.

    3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.

    4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.

    5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.

    6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.

    7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.

These sacred images are available on *Vajrasecrets. They are made of high quality alloy and are one of a kind. They are based on the lineage of His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche’s monastery, Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, Tibet. In fact, the iconography of these statues are based on detailed photographs taken by H. E. Tsem Rinpoche during a trip to Tashilhunpo’s protector chapel. These are based exactly as the 10th Panchen Lama’s personal collection.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama

Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.

After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.

The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.

His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.

Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.

Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.

The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

“If the Dalai Lama, if His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by Dorje Shugden, then we might as well not practice Buddhism anymore. If His Holiness the Dalai Lama can have his life shortened by a so-called evil spirit, any evil spirit, then can he be Avalokiteshvara? So on one hand you say, we say, I say, everybody says, he is Avalokiteshvara; on the other hand you’re saying that he can be harmed by an evil spirit… Which one is it? Can he be harmed by an evil spirit or is he Avalokiteshvara? Do you think Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Tara all take refuge in something else to protect themselves from Dorje Shugden? How illogical is that? How illogical of people to say His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by an evil spirit, any evil spirit or “Dorje Shugden” evil spirit. How is that possible?” – Tsem Tulku Rinpoche

Being an emanation of a Buddha is an Enlightened Dharma Protector who assist the powerful Dharma protector Dorje Shugden in clearing our obstacles. Not only the Gelugs relying Kache Marpo the Sakyas too relied upon Kache Marpo. Interesting information Kache Marpo is practiced within the Nyingma tradition as Tsiu Marpo and while in the Gelugpa tradition as Kache Marpo.

Recently Beng Kooi and Martin on behalf of myself and Kechara was lucky to have audience with His Holiness Gaden Trisur Rinpoche Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal of Gaden Shartse Monastery. He lives in around Paris, France. His Holiness is 91 years old and very healthy and alert. He was the 101st throne holder for Tsongkapa and was the head of the Gelugpa school of Buddhism and was very successful during his tenure. He is a strong practitioner of both Sutra and Tantra of Je Tsongkapa’s tradition and a master of all Buddhist knowledge. He holds steadfast to his protector Dorje Shugden very strongly. So we can see even the highest throneholders who are masters of Sutra and Tantra also practices Dorje Shugden knowing the benefits.

Beng Kooi and Martin brought photo albums of Kechara Forest Retreat/Kechara and updates on Kechara and our works. His Holiness was very pleased to listen and offered some gifts back.

This is a beautiful picture and the great blessings bestowed on us from His Holiness Gaden Trisur Rinpoche Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal.

Thank You Rinpoche for sharing this article. From this article, I have learnt more about Kache Marpo:

    1. I learnt that Kache Marpo is an enlightened being, who helps Dorje Shugden to perform His activities. Kache Marpo has his own set of pujas, offerings and rituals.
    2. His expression is very wrathful. He gnaws his lower lip in perpetual fury and haste, showing his impatience to help us destroy our obstacles and the causes of our suffering. He can help all sentient beings.
    3. Kache Marpo was installed by Guru Rinpoche and in the Nyingma tradition, he is very much worshipped in the form of Tsiu Marpo. In Gelug tradition he is worshipped in the form of Kache Marpo. He offered himself to be Dorje Shugden’s minister, when he saw Dorje Shugden practice benefits many.
    4. From the side of Buddha there is no difference of lineage or path, Kache Marpo initially from Nyingma tradition able to become Dorje Shugden’s minister, with the purpose to benefit many.

Kache Marpo is an enlightened dharma protector, for him to serve Dorje Shugden shows that Kache Marpo has no ego at all. This is also an indication of the level of Dorje Shugden also and that same level of respect is shown to Dorje Shugden when he takes the trance at the Gaden Monastery, the Dorje Shugden oracle sits on a throne right up there near to all the high lamas and on a prominent place.

When I started my Sadhana (daily prayers) to Protector Dorje Shugden, I was very attracted to the verse for Kache Marpo which reads like this:

“O extremely fierce Kache Marpo, the strict attendant,
Exectutioner of those with degenerated samaya,
Through offering you this ambrosial drink which bestows bliss,
May you having partaken, swiftly and spontaneously accomplish our wishes!”

To my mind, what a great guide Kache Marpo will be to ensure that we do not fall off our spiritual path.

As I began to learn more about this chief attendant to Dorje Shugden, I am more and more inspired by Kache Marpo. Kache Marpo is not only an enlightened Buddha who takes the form of a worldly protector for our sake, He is ready to forego His status as the Protector of Samye Monastery to assist Dorje Shugden. Only enlightened beings with no ego will ever be able to do so.

Together with Setrap, Kache Marpo, are the other enlightened Protectors who in being attendants to Dorje Shugden will protect and safeguard the Doctrine of Je Tsongkapa for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Within the Gelug tradition, we are greatly blessed.

Kache Marpo the Chief Minister of Dorje Shugden is an enlightened being serving Dorje Shugden whom Kache Mapo calls “The King of Dharma’. This only reflects the supreme qualities of who Dorje Shugden is. It would simply be illogical that an enlightened being would serve an ‘evil spirit’.

Thank you Rinpoche for this informative and educational article coupled with prayers of Kache Marpo. Information on Kache Marpo is rarely and not easily found.

This is a very interesting comment left on Tsem Rinpoche’s YouTube channel. The commenter ‘Suzy in Hawaii’ sees the beauty in the Dorje Shugden practice despite her reluctance to admit it due to old loyalties. Her opinion reflects the shift in public opinion of the Protector practice signaling the collapse of a 2 decade long attempt to bury the Dorje Shugden lineage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl-4lIwxph4&t=11s

Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa, Tibet

Over 400 years ago a great and learned lama Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was famed in Mongolia, Tibet, Nepal and China for being very saintly and compassionate. He resided in his residence (Zimkhang Gongma Ladrang) in Drepung Monastery. His root guru was H.H. the Omniscient 4th Panchen Lama and his close dharma brother was the 5th Dalai Lama.

The 5th Dalai Lama and Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen had a very close and dharmic relationship and often went to receive teachings together from the 4th Panchen Lama. They were close in age. They both became very learned and well known. During this time, the Dalai Lama was enthroned as a Dharma King of Tibet. But more people went to see Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen for teachings, initiations and divinations. This made the attendants of the 5th Dalai Lama feel threatened that Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s fame might usurp the power of the 5th Dalai Lama. So they had a khata forced down his throat. At that moment, Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen dissolved his psychic winds and generated the wish to be a great guardian of Buddha and Tsongkapa’s teachings. As his consciousness dissolved, he entered ‘bardo’ as a dharma protector of the highest order (jikten depey sungma). Many signs were seen throughout Lhasa at this time and the earth was said to have shaken in Lhasa. This event was already predicted to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s previous incarnation when he was one of the 8 main disciples of Lord Tsongkapa the Supreme Master and he served Tsongkapa directly by building Gaden Monastery.

When the 5th Dalai Lama heard what his scheming and power-hungry attendants had done, he was very distressed. He was very sorry Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was murdered and dishonored as he was a great dharma master. The 5th Dalai Lama composed an apology to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen. In Lhasa, tens of thousands gathered for the cremation of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s holy body. During the cremation, the 5th Dalai Lama’s apology was read out at which flames spontaneously arose from the body of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen commencing the cremation. From the body, during cremation, a powerful whirlwind of smoke tunneled into the sky for all to see as this was an indication Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s consciousness has arisen as the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. The Dharma Protector Setrap immediately recognized this new protector Dorje Shugden and ‘enthroned’ him as a powerful Dharma Protector in the realm of the Buddhas. From this, Setrap and Dorje Shugden are closely connected and very close working hand in hand always. After the cremation, the great 5th Dalai Lama built a Dorje Shugden chapel on the spot the cremation took place and named it Trode Khangsar. The 5th Dalai Lama commissioned the statue of Dorje Shugden in this chapel and had monks installed in the chapel to do continuous propitiations to Dorje Shugden. Trode Khangsar Chapel was a commemoration to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who was wronged and also a celebration of his consciousness arising as the World Peace Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.

This Trode Khangsar Chapel still exists now in Lhasa where many make pilgrimages there. It is in good condition and was recently renovated. It is over 400 years old and a testimony to the respect the Great 5th Dalai Lama had to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who arose as Dorje Shugden.

I have visited this holy chapel in Lhasa years back. I’ve never heard of it till I was in Lhasa and by chance, I was told about it which I was happy to visit. I could not find the place but strangely a bunch of pilgrims from Amdo told me they would show me how to get there in Lhasa.

This short video is a short clip of this holy Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa today commemorating Dorje Shugden, built by the great 5th Dalai Lama. The great 5th Dalai Lama even composed a prayer to Dorje Shugden which is still available today and we can recite to invoke the blessings, protection, and assistance of World Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.

I invite you with faith, please come to this place!

Riding various mounts such as nagas and garudas,
Who subdues the mamos of the charnel grounds, praise to you!

Samaya substances, offerings and torma, outer, inner and secret,
Favourite visual offerings and various objects are arranged.
Although, previously, my wishes were a bit dense,
Do not stop your powerful apparitions, I reveal and confess!

Now respectfully praising with body, speech, and mind,

Provide the good and avert the bad!
Bring increase like the waxing moon in spiritual and temporal realms!

Only in extremely rare occasion and through vast collective merits of everyone who were present that an enlightened being confer Dharma knowledge to us. Therefore we must treasure it like the rarest diamond in the world. When he taught that we must have faith and trust the Buddha, we will increase our faith and contemplate in the good qualities of all the Buddhas always. When he taught that karma persist, we will be mindful of our actions so not to incur negative karma and harm others. When he taught to apply dharma in our life, we will do so.

Thank you so much Rinpoche and Kechara for making this extremely rare occasion a memorable history. I will strive to do my best to put in practice the teachings from the enlightened Kache Marpo.

I bow down with my head to your feet,

Thank you Rinpoche so much with this wonderful sharing about Kache Marpo. Before that I am still confused about these 2 protectors, Kache Marpo and Setrap. Because I felt these 2 protectors are similar in terms of wrathful form riding a horse too. But now, by reading this posting, it helps me have better understanding and made me clear that they are different but they have the same mission i.e. help to clear our obstacles to enable us to learn the dharma and improve in spiritual practice.

Kache Marpo is an emanation of Hayagriva and its true nature is the wrathful form of Avalokiteshvara. Now, Kache Marpo is an enlightened worldly protector and assisting Dorje Shugden which is more near to us, to help us in overcoming our inner and outer obstacles to our spiritual practice.

Kache Marpo shows his wrathful form as we can see that he graws his lower lip in perpetual fury and haste, showing his impatience to help us destroy our obstacles and the causes of our suffering. Kache Marpo is so compassionate especially when it takes trance in qualified oracles to offer his advice, blessings and etc etc to the since dharma practitioners.

Therefore, we should grateful that what we have learnt the dharma teaching from our guru so far. Without the guru, we would never hear the dharma.

  35. lewkwanleng on Jun 6, 2015 at 3:53 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for such elaborated write up for Kache Marpo. I have heard from some of the senior students that Kache Marpo is himself enlightened but don’t know the details, and now I am know He is Hayagrava and Cherezig.

It is fascinating to see that Buddhas manifest in different forms to benefit beings, and to show good qualities which we should practice. In the case of Kache Marpo, I see that He is willing to “lower” Himself to be assistant for the growth of Dharma. If Buddha can lower Himself, is there need to say more for us?

It also speak volume for Dorje Shugden because even a Buddha is willing to assist Him. That means whatver Dorje Shugden is doing, is definitely benefit the sentient beings. So it is very “cool” that when we do Dorje Shugden practice, it includes Chenrezig’s “power” too. 🙂

Thank you to Rinpoche for posting this wonderful article. It is explained very clearly who is Kache Marpo and the iconography of Kache Marpo.

From the article, Kache Marpo can be trace back to the time of Guru Rinpoche which was thousand years ago. Kache Marpo was installed as one of the Dharma Protectors in Samye Monastery by Guru Rinpoche, this is clearly shown that Kache Marpo is so compassion and he is help the growth of Dharma. Furthermore, Kache Marpo is an emanation Hayagriva and in actuality his true nature is the wrathful form for Avalokiteshvara.
Later on, Kache Marpo is took an oath to become Dorje Shugden’s miniters to help to assist to bring and growth of Dharma to benefit everyone. As per article, when we do the Dorje Shugden practice, Kache Marpo is automatically included. It is clearly shown that the Dorje Shugden is the enlightened being as like a Buddha.

We are very blessed and lucky to have the protector prayer available for us in this time.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thanks for sharing the interesting and profound article about Lord Dorje Shugden assistant, Kache Marpo.

Kache Marpo is another enlightened Dharma protector from the menifestation of Hayagriva which is Chenrezig but He willing to be the Minister of Dorje Shugden and assist Dorje Shugden all the way. This is the another unbeatable statement to show Dorje Shugden is an Enlighten Dharma protector, otherwise how can an Enlighten minister can serve a unenlightened lord?

May more and more peoples can take a look this article and share to those who still have doubts, this article definitely will help them a lot!

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us about Kache Marpo. The article help me to have better understanding how Kache Marpo arose and how Kache Marpo assist Dorje Shugden in carrying out his Dharma instructions and activities. Kache Marpo is an enlightened Dharma Protector, on his own free will, took an oath to become one of Dorje Shugden’s ministers. What does this means? Can Dorje Shugden be a spirit? Definitely not. No way an enlightened being will do so. Therefore this is a very solid proof that Dorje Shugden is also enlightened. The reason of the ban is invalid.

  45. Pastor Adeline on Jun 6, 2015 at 2:41 pm

Kache Marpo being the enlightened being Himself, emanation of Hayagriva, on His own will offered to be Dorje Shugden’s minister says a lot about Dorje Shugden and His beneficial activities in preserving and spreading Je Rinpoche’s precious dharma.

Kache Marpo has a set of practice of His own, yet He happily include His practise into Dorje Shugden’s, compassionately gives convenience to practitioners to maximise their benefits from the practise of Dorje Shugden. Again, it shows how important Dorje Shugden is to contemporary practitioners.

Learning about Kache Marpo helps us to understand the benefits of Dorje Shugden’s practise from a different perspectives. It shows us how beneficial Dorje Shugden’s practise is and how we are guaranteed with beneficial results if we rely on Dorje Shugden properly. This is very well illustrated in the event of the 14th Dalai Lama’s escape in 1959. If it is not Kache Marpo and Dorje Shugden, we will not have Tibetan Buddhism today.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this wonderful information about Kache Marpo. Kache Marpo is manifested from Hayagriva , which is also Chenrezig. This shows that he is an enlightened protector. Yet Kache Marpo is assisting Dorje Shugden. There is no doubt Dorje Shugden also an enlightened dharma protector. We are indeed very lucky to be able to do Dorje Shugden practice.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the above information with us regarding Kache Marpo.
Now , we can have a better understanding about how Kache Marpo , Dorje Shugden and Panglung Kuten are related.

Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing. I only come to know that Kache Marpo is an enlightened being after reading this blog post. We are so fortunate to have this opportunity to know him more. Kache Marpo is an enlightened being and yet is the entourage of Dorje Shugden. I can imagine the status of Dorje Shugden is so high and prestige.

Thank you Rinpoche for everything on Kache Marpo , an enlightened protector assisting Lord Shugden as his chief minister , what more to say about Lord Dorje Shugden himself ?

Dear Rinpoche, thank you for sharing the teachings and stories of Kache Marpo. Indeed interesting and informational. Very glad to have Rinpoche as our guru.

  52. Choong on May 29, 2015 at 11:34 pm

The way enlightened beings manifest to aid us are many and Kache Marpo or Tsiu Marpo has a long track and proven record in the different traditions, now in the Ganden tradition, that makes me have faith that he is an enlightened being. If Kache Marpo is an enlightened being, then Dorje Shugden certainly would have to be an enlightened being.

  53. Julia Tan on May 29, 2015 at 11:32 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us about Kache Marpo. I used to know Kache Marpo is the minister of Dorje Shugden without knowing who he actually was. Kache Marpo is another enlightened Dharma protector from the menifestation of Hayagriva which is Chenrezig Himself. Since the Buddha time, all enlightened beings manifested in different beings and time assisting each other to help all sentients beings. In this modern time which is a spiritual degenerate time that this lineage is still well preserved. I find it very blessed and fortunate to be born in this life time to meet this lineage. Reading and learning how all these enlightened beings work together to protect and hold the Dharma so that the precious Dharma can spread on. Dharma is the only ticket for happiness.

I think by now those who have doubt on Dorje Shugden practice should become clearer and faith should arise from here. All this is happening now due to the compassion of our Guru. We do not practice any Dharma protectors practice out of simply or blindly because “my Guru said so” but with proven lineage and clear explanation that supported this practice.

I do hope those who are reading these whole series of Dorje Shugden teachings should let go of your perceptions and doubt and start practicing because it’s very rare to receive a pure and unbroken lineage from a highly reincarnated Guru like H.E. Tsem Rinpoche at this time.

  54. Sofilim on May 29, 2015 at 11:18 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the background, lineage, iconography n benefits of Kache Marpo. I totally agree that when an enlightened being like Kache Marpo volunteering as the minister to Protector Dorje Shugden’s entourage, it does show the quality and greatness of Dorje Shugden. Kache Marpo rightly can be a practise of his own and yet willing offered himself to assist Dorje Shugden. This definitely confirms Dorje Shugden as enlightened being. I am absolutely blessed to have all these enlightened beings as Dorje Shugden n entourage to protect me, clear my obstacles n help further my dharma practises. Thsnk you again, Rinpoche and may continue blessings us with dharma teachings.

  55. spchua on May 29, 2015 at 11:17 pm

    Dear Rinpoche

Kache Marpo can be trace back to thousand years ago during Guru Rinpoche era. Kache Marpo arises and installed as wrathful and worldly form of Dharma Protector and practices by various Tibetan Buddhism’s Lineage. He took the oath to be Dorje Shugden’s Minister.

It’s very blessed that practicing Dorje Shugden automatically include the practices Kache Marpo as these will definitely benefited a lot of people.

Thank you Rinpoche for this informative write-up to bless and benefit everyone.

  56. Grace Leong on May 29, 2015 at 10:56 pm

The Buddhas have been manifesting in different forms and emanations over the last 2600 years, skillfully trying to guide all sentient beings to ENLIGHTMENT. Here we have Kache Marpo who is already enlightened but yet return to be part of Dorje Shugden’s entourage. His main tasks is to assist us to overcome inner and outer obstacles to our spiritual practice. It proves that our current karma is such that we need all these kindness and guidance from the Buddhas to manifest in different forms with different methods to help us along our spiritual path.
    With folded hands

  57. Fong on May 29, 2015 at 8:56 pm

Kache Marpo is a emanation of Hayagriva, the wrathful form of Avalokiteshvara, an enlightened being and also worshipped by the Nyingma as Tsiu Marpo, an enlightened being as confirmed by Christopher Paul Bell. Tsiu Marpo was subjugated by Padmasambhava during the 8th century.

If Kache Marpo who is an enlightened being can be the minister of Dorje Shugden, then by inference Dorje Shugden has to be enlightened. So, by inference again, if Dorje Shugden is enlightened then he cannot be ‘evil’ or a spirit.

As such, I know that I am in good hand and have nothing to worry except whether I am practising well. Thank you, Rinpoche for allaying my doubts.

  58. Doreen Teoh on May 29, 2015 at 11:50 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for sharing the teachings and explanation of Kache Marpo origination, lineage and good deeds.

As by understanding Kache Marpo existence, it is the most evident and confirmed that Dorje Shudgen, is a enlightened Buddha.

    Why is it so?

Kache Marpo appears to the sentient beings 1,000 years at the time of Guru Rinpoche, and had the same purpose and motivation with Dorje Shugden that is to be as one of the protective divinities to help increase the growth of Dharma in the country of Tibet and the surrounding area or as for Dorje Shugden, the world.

Even though Kache
Marpo takes on the form of a worldly Protector, in actuality his true nature is the wrathful form of Avalokiteshvara.

Kache Marpo works hand in hand with Dorje Shugden, and only enlightened beings are able to communicate and assist each other. Both Kache Marpo and Dorje Shudgden are both enlightened beings but appears to sentient beings at a different time, one ancient, 1000 years ago and now at this information technology time, where knowing and learning of dharma is degenerating.

    Om Mani Pedme Hum.

Thank you so much for telling us about the history of Kachen Marpo, Rinpoche. I have always been curious to know more about the history of the entourage of our Protector.

  63. Sock Wan on May 21, 2015 at 12:49 am

    Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for posting this article. It explains very clearly to us the iconography of Kache Marpo. Most of us who are not exposed to Tibetan Buddhism when we see the image of a protector, we will not relate it to Buddhism or Buddha at all because the protector is so different from the usual peaceful forms we have seen. But with clear explanation, a wrathful image becomes an image of compassion, who are ever ready to help us. For modern people like us who are full of negative karmas, having a protector is very effective in clearing our negative karmas and obstacles, so that we may study and practice Dharma without much interferences. Since I joined Kechara 4 years ago, I have been doing protector practice, the first thing I notice is my mind and emotion is more stable.

Kache Marpo being the emanation of Hayagriva (who is also emanation of Avalokiteshvara) is effectively a Buddha. He vowed to assist Dorje Shugden all the way. It must mean that Dorje Shugden is in fact a Buddha also because a Buddha will never obey or serve a spirit.

We are very lucky to have the prayers available here for us to practice. You have to do it to experience the benefits yourself.

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. All thanks to our Guru bringing this practice to Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong Malaysia.

Wow ,reading all these powerful quotes had me realised much better of giving even I have little. May H E Tsem Rinpoche’s sincere advice to reach the far shore of liberation to everyone reading this blog. The most truly generous people are those who give silently without asking any in return. There is no exercise better than reaching and lifting people up. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Well creating and lighting for others we naturally light our own way. Helping others especially those unfortunate ones, make us feel more positive about our own circumstances.

Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Umze for the day was Siew Hong. She's just been with us for slightly more than a year now but she's proven her capability in leading the puja. Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. When she leads, make sure you are there to hear her chant for yourself! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
