A Tsongkhapa Meditation

(By Tsem Rinpoche)

We should meditate on anything we know about Bodhicitta and generate the mind to achieve it. How do we do that?

We start by visualising all the Three Jewels and our Gurus dissolving into Lord Tsongkhapa. Then visualise our mother on left, our father on the right, and all other beings surrounding us as far as the eye can see. Lord Tsongkhapa, the emanation of Avalokiteshvara, Vajrapani and Manjushri, is smiling gently at us an arms-length away. He is the size of a thumb and is loving us, forgiving us, accepting us – filled with golden purifying healing and wisdom lights.

First recite the prayer ‘A Song Rapidly Invoking Blessings‘. Afterwards, clear the mind and recite Migtsema while visualising the lights from Tsongkhapa entering your crown, flushing away all sickness, anger, negative karma, negative imprints, bad habituations, lack of self-worth, lack of clarity, etc. All this leaves your orifices in the form of black light, snakes, scorpions, etc into the ground beneath you. Seven levels down, the Lord of Death (usually depicted as holding the Wheel of Life) opens his mouth and happily accepts these.

When he finishes his ‘meal’ from you, your body is light, clear and happy. The Lord of Death falls back to sleep (it is very important to visualise this), and Lord Tsongkhapa fills you with His healing and wisdom lights. He grants you the seven wisdoms; knowledge and bodhicitta is planted. Whatever you visualised from Tsongkhapa, think that the same thing is simultaneously happening to all beings around you, and that you hear them reciting Migtsema together with you. Focus on that sound and clear your mind of all other thoughts. The chanting is light thunder. Focus the mind – it is very powerful to develop powerful concentration using this method.

When you have finished (it is entirely up to you how long you spend on this), Lama Tsongkhapa, smiling, dissolves into a small golden orb of light and enters the crown of your head, goes down your central channel, and then goes to your heart. He melds with your heart, and you and Tsongkhapa become ONE. He implants Bodhicitta, the realisation of Sunyata, and all the 84,000 teachings of Lord Buddha in your mind. Think like this strongly.

Also think that when Tsongkhapa manifests in Bodhgaya as one of the thousands of Buddhas to appear in this fortunate eon, you will be born among his disciples. Visualise that Tsongkhapa’s Omniscient mind, unerring compassion and wisdom is planted strongly in your mind. Then feel light, happy and blessed. That would be an easy Tsongkhapa meditation to do daily and on special days.

Doing Migtsema (Tsongkhapa’s mantra) has many profound benefits. You gain the seven types of wisdoms: quick wisdom, profound wisdom, wisdom of expounding Dharma, wisdom of spiritual debate, wisdom of composition, great wisdom and clear wisdom. Mahasiddha Menkhangpa and the Panchen Lama Palden Yeshe composed 11 different instructions on ritual practices to be done with Migtsema. It has incredible benefits. The 11 instructions are to make rain for crops, gather clouds, cure djrib disease that makes people fall unconscious, avoid harm from weapons, prevention against future djrib disease to arise, cure wind or lung diseases that cause uncontrollable rage and anger, cure physical and mental disabilities, protect from thieves, robbers and enemies, find sustenance, pacify obstacles to growing crops such as insects, and pacify obstacles to traveling. These 11 healing actions can be done for others when one has finished a close action retreat on Migtsema.

There are altogether 108 healing ritual practices one can do for the benefit of others by Migtsema. They are methods for helping sentient beings. Panchen Lama said that the practice of Migtsema contains the meaning of all 84,000 teachings of the Conqueror Buddha Shakyamuni!! For those in the healing arts, Migtsema is a very excellent practice. For extending life, it is superb. If you wish to dedicate the merits for your parents, their benefits, long life, health or good rebirth, Migtsema is supreme. For those in academic fields, to increase the good ‘wind’ for learning, mastering a subject or memory, Migtsema is wonderful. For children who are studying, it is also excellent. For those who are depressed, Migtsema is the best for modern stress-related conditions of the mind. Migtsema combined with meditation has so many benefits that it would be beyond what I can post. But believe the great masters, it is a great practice. H.H. the Dalai Lama recommended us to do Migtsema always when He graced Gaden Monastery with His visit.

We should be diligently making offerings of candles, incense, fruits, water, etc on your shrine to Lord Tsongkhapa as a daily practice, it is very powerful. When doing this visualisation, remember that in Tsongkhapa’s heart is Buddha Shakyamuni and in Shakyamuni’s heart is Buddha Vajradhara. This form of Tsongkhapa is called ‘LAMA LOBSANG THUBWANG DORJE CHANG’. It is Tsongkhapa as one with Shakyamuni and Vajradhara; the Three Jewels are ALL COMPLETE IN LORD TSONGKHAPA. H.H. the Dalai lama mentioned many times that images of Tsongkhapa are super sacred. Hence it would be good to have an image of Tsongkhapa and dedicate it to our loved ones, or to have Tsongkhapa pendants to wear for blessings and protection.

Tsongkhapa and His Migtsema practice are very profound, yet simple, yet powerful for the minds of today. It doesn’t require lengthy rituals, initiations, taking vows, or even having to meet with a teacher to engage in Tsongkhapa’s practice. The excellent part is that you can’t go wrong with it even without guidance from a teacher. Any Tom, Dick or Harry can start, maintain, do and receive the benefits!! For our modern, instant, supermarket drive-thru, want-everything-quick minds without danger and a ‘money-back guarantee’, TSONGKHAPA IS THE BEST!

The last series of posts on Tsongkhapa, I dedicate to all my Twitter friends. May you achieve your spiritual goals with ease, direction and great happiness. In this and all lives may you never be separated from the perfect path praised by the Buddhas. May you reach the same attainments as Lord Tsongkhapa following the path set out by the Perfect Tathagata, Shakyamuni in this life and future lives. Tashi delek and peace.

      Daer Andrea,

Thank you for your comment and sharing.

There is a section on Rinpoche’s blog on Lama Tsongkhapa here https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/category/tsongkhapa if you have not come across it. There is much information in there that are useful for beginner and advanced practitioners alike.

A few years ago, when I stumbled onto Rinpoche’s blog, I learned about Lama Tsongkhapa and his powerful practice for people in our era who are prone to depression and mental illnesses. I thought it would be helpful for me and I learned the mantra just like how you did. The mantra is powerful as you have mentioned.

I rejoice for your faith in Lama Tsongkhapa and may you attain his body, speech and mind with the help of the powerful protector Dorje Shugden. You may like to learn about the protector here https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/me/miraculous-healing.html.

Should I be of your assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know.

According to the great lama, Panchen Lama, the practice of Migtsema contains the meaning of all 84,000 teachings of the Conqueror Buddha Shakyamuni. As such, if we would like to dedicate the merits for our parents, for their benefits, long life, health or good rebirth, Migtsema is supreme. We can invite and offer the Lama Tsongkhapa’s image or Tsongkhapa pendants to our loved ones for blessings and protection.

The most important and attractive part is Tsongkhapa and Migtsema practice are very profound, simple and powerful for the minds. We may not go wrong with it even without guidance from a teacher.

Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing which is very beneficial for most of us especially when we are doing daily sadhana with this visualization.

Tsongkhapa is truly supreme, relying on Lama Tsongkhapa one overcomes two major obstacles that can stand in the way of spiritual progress. Deep ignorance is overcome by the 7 wisdoms bestowed on practitioners who practices the Migtsema combined with visualisations. Reliance on the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa, one collects vast amount of merits and purification, and coupled with certain long life visualisations one will create the causes to endure long so one’s spiritual development is not cut short by premature death.

I find this short article on Migtsema, the practice and the visualisation very helpful for people of today. It’s helpful for those doing retreat as well. It explains well the practice, its benefits and visualisation which is simple yet powerful. And I learnt from this article that “Panchen Lama said that the practice of Migtsema contains the meaning of all 84,000 teachings of the Conqueror Buddha Shakyamuni!!” – it shows how profound the practice is.

By the way, “TSONGKHAPA – A Simple Guide to a Powerful Practice” book and the Tsongkhapa Boxset both are very helpful, do not do your Tsongkhapa practice or retreat without reading these books beforehand. It’s helpful, will definitely make your retreat even more fruitful 😉

Lama Tsongkhapa’s practice is an incredible practice that is ‘simple’ and yet gives us so much benefits, both spiritually and also help us in our day to day life. This guide to Tsongkhapa’s practice is one of my go to references whenever I need information of Tsongkhapa’s practice or just to refresh my memory.

I remember a story of which Rinpoche told us during his years living and serving at Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen’s Dharma centre in Los Angeles. It was during this time that there was a conference and gathering of all Buddhist traditions, and each tradition was invited to do a short prayer onstage, with many audiences present. Rinpoche, being young at that time though Geshela would do some fancy prayer, but in the end, Geshela decided to do a simple, short, Gaden Lhagyama for the audience.

It was truly fascinating to hear about this. It shows Geshela’s humility, which Rinpoche often speak fondly of. Plus the effect of performing such a condensed and ‘simple’ practice in public is not only to bless the crowd, but imagine if a new Buddhist was to enter the gathering to identify what Buddhist school he should start learning the Dharma from… perhaps if a more complicated practice was done, a person new to Buddhism would think it is too difficult and too far fetched for him/her to engage in practice. lol.

Is a blessing for all the students to have H.E.Tsem Rinpoche here in Malaysia to lead us in the teaching of Gaden lineage. Meditation is essential in practicing dharma to tame our mind and to gain wisdom for realization. Thank you Rinpoche to put effort in guiding us in dharma path , sutra and tantra.

Such short and simple yet profound teachings in the many benefits to engage in a Tsongkhapa retreat and recite Lama Tsongkhapa’s Migtsema.

The best part is that one doesn’t need to have initiations, taking vows or meeting a teacher to be able to do this retreat.

I have been doing the visualisation during the recitation and it has helped me to concentrate and focus my mind more. This is a retreat not to be missed.

Lama Tsongkhapa is a perfect practice for the fast paced global society of the 21st century. As Rinpoche accurately described, we have a instant-reward mentality that makes most spiritual and traditional methods of living unattractive. Lama Tsongkhapa is like an all in one practice that blesses us with all that we wish for and protect us from all the undesirable. The practice is also easy and very quick.

Lama Tsongkhapa was my first daily practice when I started my spiritual journey 7 years ago. I hope that everyone will embark on their spiritual path during these challenging times and open the doors of their heart to a whole new dimension of peace, Joy and wealth.

Thank you rinpoche and team for this post!

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for sharing this amazing visualisation to be done during meditation. I had personally tried this and the result is amazing.

I have learnt from this post that this visualization combines a few type of visualization into one. It helps us to gain the different types of wisdom with just one visualization. This visualization also helps to lengthen our live as well.

The mantra Migtzema is a very powerful mantra. It contains the blessing of three buddhas simultaneously, Chenrezig, Manjushri and Vajrapani. It can help us to develop compassion, develop seven type of wisdom, and dispel all negative forces, emotions and disturbances.

It is sad that very few people understand the special qualities of Je Rinpoche and this is perhaps a sign of the tremendous merits needed to practice Lama Tsongkhapa and gain his special blessings. Therefore, we are incredibly fortunate to be practicing and propagating this extremely beneficial practice. And what’s incredible, it comes with no commitment that would entail other practices that require initiation.

Tsongkhapa practice is highly beneficial to all who simply wish to have a better life. To be more peaceful within. It helps to clear one’s mind of blockages and obscuration that hinder one from seeing with clarity. It is easy to do and when observed consistently, there will be positive changes in your life.

Du Fu (712-770 AD), also known as Tu Fu, was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty, often considered one of the greatest alongside Li Bai. He was a poet-historian and a poet-sage, known for his realistic depictions of human suffering and reflections on the troubled times of his era. His poems, reflecting his personal experiences and the political instability of the time, have had a lasting impact on both Chinese and Japanese literary traditions.
    Interesting read.

H H Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo is by far one of the most popular and influential Gelug religious figures of the 20th Century. One of Phabongkha’s most important aristocratic students, Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom Tsering relationship to her teacher and his lineage teachings goes along way .She is famously remembered for is her unwavering devotion towards her guru, HH Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Yangdzom Tsering’s Shatra family were ancient sponsors and students of the Gelug tradition and had apparently been patrons of Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelug school. The life stories of Lady Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom as mentioned by Joona Repo is indeed inspiring. How her life struggles with tragedies, and her devotion to dorje Shugden and the Gelug tradition throughout her life.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing of an inspiring lady.

Looking at these pictures remained me of my first pilgrimage to Wu Tai San. With the blessings of our guru, we able to visit Wu Tai San a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site . In fact it never did come to my mind that I am fortunate given a chance to go as I am still very new then. Upon hearing about the pilgrimage I got myself register without much thought. The history and stories of Wu Tai San has inspired me to go there. Interesting the Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of China are closely connected to WuTai San. Wu Tai San located in Shanxi Province, China renowned as the home of Lord Manjushri the bodhisattva of wisdom, with different emanations of the bodhisattva residing on each of the five peaks. The area is dotted with over 50 temples and monasteries, many of which are historical and architecturally significant. Those temples built over 7 dynasties housing numerous Buddhist relics. Wutai Shan also offers stunning scenery, including snow-capped peaks, forests, and streams. Wu Tai San is one of the four Sacred Buddhist mountains of China, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wutai Shan was known to be a mystical and sacred site inhabited by divine spirits, accompanied by unusual events, such as miraculous light appearances at night.
We visited all the Holy sites, making offerings and doing prayers at each sites. We even have the opportunity to collect holy stones for future statue insertion or to keep on our altars. Times flies as our pilgrimage ended with so many stories to share with the rest.
Thank you Rinpoche and writes team sharing those pictures.

Padmasambhava, the Lotus-born Guru, also known as Guru Rinpoche is a legendary tantric Buddhist master who is widely revered in Tibetan Buddhism. He is seen as the second Buddha particularly within the Nyingma .He was a legendary Indian Buddhist mystic credited with introducing Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. As found in Buddhist scriptures Padmasambhava birth is often associated with legends and prophecies. Interesting…… Padmasambhava is depicted with eight manifestations, each reflecting a different aspect of his miraculous activities. Interesting article .

Milarepa Cave, situated high in the Himalayan mountain of Tibet, a sacred cave beckons pilgrims and spiritual seekers from across the globe. Milarepa Cave, a site of profound significance in Tibetan Buddhism, is merely a geological wonder. This sacred cave is also a living testament to the power of meditation and devotion. Its where an 11th-century yogi and poet who spent transformative years in solitary practice. Milarepa Cave graces Tibet’s rugged yet stunning landscapes, a region renowned for its deep spiritual heritage and breath-taking natural beauty. The cave’s importance is inseparable from a revered figure and the enduring legacy of Jetsun Milarepa a revered yogi and poet in Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa Cave stands not just as a geological formation but as a powerful symbol of spiritual transformation and the enduring strength of Tibetan Buddhism. Reading this interesting cave had me Google for more information about this sacred cave. Numerous stories and legends surround Milarepa’s time in the cave, enhancing its mystical aura.

I wanted to take a moment to share a recent experience with you regarding my Instagram account. Unfortunately, my account was hacked, which was both frustrating and disappointing. Losing access to something that plays a significant role in my business and personal connections was incredibly stressful. What made the situation even more challenging was discovering that Meta does not have a dedicated support team to assist users facing account compromises. With so many people experiencing this issue daily, it’s alarming that their recovery process is not more accessible or efficient. After numerous failed attempts to recover my account through Meta’s standard procedures, I was fortunate enough to get in touch with a member of the Meta recovery department, @Rothsteincode on X (formerly Twitter), and via email at rothsteincode@gmail.com Their expertise and guidance were invaluable, and thanks to their assistance, I was able to regain full access to my account.
While I am incredibly grateful for their help, this experience has highlighted a major issue—Meta needs to implement better security measures and provide more reliable support for users dealing with these kinds of problems. The lack of direct customer support is unacceptable, considering how vital social media platforms have become for businesses and individuals alike.I wanted to share this with you in case you or anyone you know ever faces a similar issue. If you ever find yourself in this unfortunate situation, I highly recommend reaching out to @Rothsteincode for assistance. Hopefully, Meta will take action to improve their security policies and customer service in the near future.Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay safe online, and let’s continue to support each other in this digital space.

A great history of a great yogi which I do enjoy reading , reading over it again and again. Jetsun Milarepa was a famous Tibetan siddha, known as a murderer when he was a young man. Who later turning to Buddhism and becoming a highly accomplished Buddhist disciple. Generally considered as one of Tibet’s most famous yogis and spiritual poets, whose teachings are known among several schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa’s story is one of struggle, anguish, resolve, and triumph all of which make him recognizably. Practicing these teachings for many years in isolated mountain retreats in caves such as caves hidden deep in the mountains of Tsum Valley. That’s where Milarepa attained enlightenment and gained fame for his incredible perseverance in practice and for his spontaneous songs of realisation. Milarepa is said to be the first to achieve the state of Vajradhara in one lifetime. That’s incredible.

H.H Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was a Gelug Lama, a sharp analyst, master of philosophical debate and a Tantric practitioner. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was a disciple of the third Trijang Rinpoche, junior tutor of the 14th Dalai Lama. Rinpoche was known as a strong, detached and wrathful lama having impeccable knowledge of all rituals, art and science. Thousands of Westerners have received and benefited from his teachings both in the West and in India and gave many empowerments and teachings as well. Visiting Tibet, holy Gaden Monastery is everyone dream and a once life time. Of course if we have the means to visit again will be great. End of December 2008 and early January 2009 our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche with a small group students visited Tibet. Thousands of pilgrims, visitors and tourists around the world have visited this incredible holy land for the last 600 years. Tsem Rinpoche visited Tibet for the first time with an oxygen tank. I am fortunate to visit this holy place with my Dharma brothers and sisters years back.
With our Guru blessing we went without any without any hitch. Visited most of the monasteries and could feel the powerful energies there. Looking at those pictures in this blog reminds me of trip there.

Interesting….. a ground breaking documentary by world BBC where everyone should watch. BBC did mentioned and documented that Jesus was a Buddhist monk and that he had spent some years in India. I would not know about this till I came across this blog. Many people most probably too. Interesting watch one should not miss. Jesus was a religious leader revered in Christianity, one of the world’s major religions. He is regarded by most Christians as the Incarnation of God. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus was well acquainted with Buddhism. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus knew about Buddhism. Other evidence, while perhaps apocryphal, indicates that he spent most of his so-called lost years outside Judea, possibly in Kashmir to study Buddhism exclusively.

The Great Buddhas of Bamiyan were two monumental Buddhist statues built around 600 CE. A holy site for Buddhists on the Silk Road, historically a caravan route linking the markets of China with those of the Western world. The two most prominent statues were the giant standing sculptures of the Buddhas .It was the site of several Buddhist monasteries where monks at the monasteries lived as hermits. It was until in 2001, both statues were destroyed by the Taliban . Before being blown up in 2001, they were the largest examples of standing Buddha carvings in the world .Buddhism was eliminated in Afghanistan by the 13th century during the Mongol conquests. Sadly all statues depicting humans in Afghanistan was destroyed. They were perhaps the most famous cultural landmarks of the region, and the site was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Despite the Buddhas’s destruction, the ruins continue to be a popular culture landmark, where many locals, pilgrims and tourist visit the site.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting blog.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. One of the places everyone should visit- https://bit.ly/2VgsHhK

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
