Dear friends,

Extensive research and translations have been done on this incredible female devotee of Lord Buddha. Take your time to study up on her. We have arranged two translated texts from two Tibetan sources on her great deeds. May this inspire you very much as it did me. It will be beautiful to read how she brought so many on the path to dharma. High lamas in Tibetan have many previous lives where they took various incarnations to be of benefit to many beings. Magadha Sangmo is considered the first incarnation of the great master Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen.

Also known as Sumagadha, Ma ga dha bZang mo’i, Cula-Subhadda or Cula-Sumadhi, there exist many sources about her deeds which I share with you here. They can be found in English, Chinese and Tibetan, showing that Magadha Zangmo had a widespread impact on Buddhism throughout the ancient world. There was even a chapter and sutra dedicated to her in the Kangyur (the translated collected words of the Buddha) called the Sumagadhavadana. His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche also spoke about her and described the story behind her invocation of Lord Buddha Shakyamuni. So please do read about Magadha Zangmo, her devotion to her teacher Lord Shakyamuni and the many wonderful works that have been written about her.

The story of Magadha Zangmo begins with her father, Suddatta, a kind and generous man whom was one of Buddha Shakyamuni’s lay disciple and a primary patron. He was instrumental in building Buddha’s first monastic abode called Jetavana. Suddatta established himself as a philanthropist by practicing the Buddha’s teachings on Generosity which earned him the name ‘Anathapindika’ which means “the feeder of the orphans or helpless”. Having gained great faith in the Buddha’s teachings and took refuge in the Three Jewels, Anathapindika became the foremost student of Buddha Shakyamuni and set a great example for all sponsors, on the right attitude to hold when sponsoring one’s Guru in Dharma.

When the Buddha was about to enter the Rain Retreat which lasts three months during the monsoon, the caring Anathapindika enquired where the Buddha would be staying during this period as it would be difficult to travel to get necessary supplies. Upon knowing that the Buddha did not have a permanent shelter, Anathapindika set forth to look for a suitable place which is the current Jetavana Grove in the land of Magadha. But procuring the beautiful park was no easy task, as it belonged to Prince Jeta, whom had not the slightest interest to sell his beautiful park. To deter Anathapindika from asking further, the prince said “Alright, you can have the park for however much it costs to cover the ground with gold coins”. Seizing this opportunity, Anathapindika immediately agreed to the prince’s terms and soon brought over wagons filled with gold coins to cover the ground. Upon seeing Anathapindika’s determination, the Prince asked the reason for which Anathapindika needed this park for. On hearing that the park was for the Buddha and His retinue, the prince immediately relented and handed the park over to Anathapindika for a more reasonable price. From then on, Anathapindika spent a large portion of his fortune to build a monastery for the Buddha complete with accommodation for the Buddha and Sangha members, assembly halls and lotus parks, while Prince Jeta, who initially reluctant to sell his park, offered to build an impressive gate house leading into the park and a wall around it for privacy.

Upon the completion of the monastery, Anathapindika invited and offered the Buddha to reside in the monastery. The inauguration of the monastery was a huge fanfare with the assembly of gods and men coming together, rejoicing in Anathapindika’s generous deed. The Buddha took the Jetavana monastery as His main residence and gave many teachings there to benefit all sentient beings. Records of this virtuous man is found in all Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana scriptures and it is said that due to his devotion to the Buddha, he had attained the state of a Sottapanna, the first stage leading to Arhatship.

Anathapindika had two daughters and adopted a third. When his younger biological daughter, Magadha Zangmo came of age, a famous merchant named Ugga approached Anathapindika to ask for his daughter in marriage. Although Anathapindika was not in favor of allowing his daughter to marry this man, as he lived very far away and is not a Buddhist practitioner, he however allowed his daughter to make the decision and asked what conditions she would wish for to be married into the house of Ugga.

Magadha Zangmo then replied, if Ugga will invite the Buddha and His disciples to their home for a meal, she is willing to marry him. Ugga agreed to her terms and the both were married in a distant land called Gokhara. Gokhara was not a Buddhist community at that time, and followed mainly the Jain religion. The locals there worshipped ascetics who would meditate naked in the wild. It made Magadha Zangmo felt uneasy every time her in-laws invited these ascetics to come to their home and hosted them for meals. Magadha Zangmo began talking to her mother-in-law and father-in-law about the Buddha and in time, their curiosity grew in the Buddha. All this time, Magadha had also longed to see the golden face of the Buddha and make offerings of dana as she used to do.

One day, when the time was right, Magadha Zangmo reminded her husband of his promise to her before they were married. Ugga agreed but mentioned that it will take a long time more as the Buddha reside in a far place, but Magadha Zangmo insisted they prepare a sumptuous meal to be offered as dana to the Buddha the next day and leave the invitation of the Buddha to her. Although Ugga and her in-laws were doubtful that Buddha would arrive, to please Magadha, they prepared a large feast for the next day. On that night, Magadha Zangmo climbed up to the roof of her home and offered incense in the direction of Jetavana and recited this prayer:

MA LU SEM CHEN KUN GYI GON GYUR CHING
DU TE PUNG CHAY MI ZAY JOM DZAY LHA
NGO NAM MA LU YANG DA KYEN GYUR PAY
CHOM DEN KOR CHAY NAY DIR SHEG SU SOL

Translation: Protector of all beings without exception, divine subduer of innumerable negative forces, deity, perfect knower of all things, Bhagawan and attendants, please come here.

With this prayer, she requested the Buddha together with his disciples to please come to her home and receive alms. The Buddha, being omniscient, heard her prayer and told Ananda to tell all his students who have achieved Insight to make preparations to travel to Gokhara where Magadha Zangmo lived. This heartfelt invitation of the Buddha by Magadha Zangmo has since become archetypal for ritual invocations practiced today.

The very next day, Magadha Zangmo’s house was festive with preparations for the Buddha’s arrival. The maids and servants were busy cleaning the entire household, preparing and cooking up a feast for the Buddha and His entourage. Her heart was brimming with faith as she oversaw all the preparations needed for her Master’s arrival.

As the sun rose towards the Zenith, some of the servants saw a procession of monks clad in saffron robes riding on dragons, garudas and other mystical animals descending from the sky. When Magadha Zangmo was asked if either one of them was her Master, she replied no as she saw the Arhats. The Buddha was seen last in the procession of Arhats, riding on a lion and as He descended from the sky the Buddha manifested into 18 separate Buddhas, each entering one of the 18 gateways to the city. Many miracles ensued that turned the city’s disbelief into faith in the Dharma. The Buddha realizing that the city’s population could not fit into Magadha’s home transformed Magadha’s house into a brilliant structure composed of moonstones and jewels. So while Magadha and her family worshipped the Buddha inside, the townsfolk outside all saw reflections of the Buddha that radiated from the house.

The entire city of people of Gokhara who were not Buddhist were left awe-struck by the spectacle of the Buddha’s psychic manifestation. Many were seen on their knees and some prostrated in faith as they have seen for themselves the Golden face of Lord Buddha. Magadha Zangmo welcomed the Buddha to her house and offered the Buddha with Dana and in return, seeing the time was ripe for Magadha Zangmo’s husband and in-laws to receive the Dharma, gave a Dharma teaching to everyone present. Thousands thronged Magadha Zangmo’s house for teachings from the Buddha. Having heard the Buddha’s teachings, many people of Gokhara took refuge in the Buddha and the Three Jewels.

It was due to Magadha Zangmo’s faith and devotion that the people of Gokhara were able to meet with Buddha, receive the Dharma and have their minds liberated. Magadha Zangmo was like her father, Anathapindika who established the culture of hosting the Buddha and the Sangha so that the Dharma would grow in her region.

There are many recorded accounts of Magadha Zangmo in the different Buddhist canons which indicates that Magadha Zangmo was not an ordinary being. When the Buddha’s attendant remarked to the Buddha how auspicious it was for the Buddha to answer Magadha’s prayers to visit, the Buddha responded that Magadha Zangmo had in her past life been the daughter of King Krkin, who was the main patron of the Buddha Kasyapa, and even then she had been a great devotee of the Dharma, and was the one who introduced her father, King Krkin to Buddha Kasyapa. And even before that, she had been a poor girl who had made an offering of a crown of flowers to the sanctuary of a Pratyekabuddha and made a vow to continue to do so lifetime after lifetime. Magadha’s story is that of pure devotion towards the Dharma that in turn made the Dharma available to countless people.

Magadha Zangmo lived her life serving the Buddha and the Dharma, bringing benefit to countless beings who came to listen to Buddha’s teachings. It is said that she achieved Arhatship during her lifetime as a lay householder, another indication that a practitioner can gain realizations even when we are not living the life of a monk or nun. Her story is still taught in Buddhist curriculum of today, reminding us to be humble and to always seize the chance to be generous and make offerings to the Buddhas.

From her act of offering incense to the Buddha came the tradition of making offerings to the Buddhas which is still practiced today across all Buddhist traditions. It is from her act of making incense offerings and reciting the verse of invocation which started the tradition of invocation prayer. Magadha Zangmo’s life legacy came filled with spiritual meaning and it was said that she continued to return to Samsara as great Buddhist masters as well as ordinary incarnations to benefit more beings after her passing.

“In India, in the Buddha’s time, there was a woman called Magadha Zangmo, who lived somewhere near Bodhgaya, I think. She was Buddhist and her husband was a Hindu. She wanted to invite Buddha to her home and offer lunch to Buddha and his disciples, so she cleaned the house and made the lunch to offer Buddha and his disciples. Her husband said that Buddha wouldn’t come, but she said, “Buddha is coming,” and made everything ready.

Magadha Zangmo then stood outside holding incense in her hand and recited this prayer, “Ma lü sem chän kün gyi…nä dir sheg su söl.” All the disciples came first, each arhat radiant and riding on a different animal. With each one, her husband said, “Is this Buddha?” and she said, “No.” Another disciple would come; he would ask, “Is this Buddha?” and she would say, “No.” All the disciples came first, and Buddha was the last one to come. Magadha Zangmo then made offering to Buddha. So, this invocation comes from Magadha Zangmo.”

“The account of Buddha appearing in the skies refers to the story of Magadha Zangmo, daughter of Anathapindika, a great patron of the Buddha. She lived in Gorakhpur, far from where Buddha was staying. One night, moved by great faith, she climbed to the roof of the house and prayed for the Buddha to appear. At once the skies became filled with miraculous sights the poem describes.”

Receiving the Buddha’s assent, he agreed to give his daughter. Thereafter, they saw off Magadha Sangmo, bedecked in finery, to Pundravardhana which was at a distance of a hundred and sixty pagtsad [1 pagtsad ≈ 1 mile]. Knowing that at this distant region, she would not be able to see the Buddha, she set out with tears in her eyes.

Thereafter, at her stepparents’ and husband’s home, she treated them with loving-kindness and good conduct for a long period of time. Joy and happiness increased in their house.

At one time, the family invited and entertained many religious preceptors who were outside the Buddha’s teachings. They were uneducated, they were naked, their hair was loose, they did not cover their genitals, and their conduct was unrestrained. Sangmo was not pleased. She asked her stepmother, “It is deplorable that you honor people whose conduct is no better than bulls and cows.”

The stepmother asked, “In that case, what type of religious preceptors do you have in your region?”

Sangmo replied, “The preceptor who is honored in my home is the teacher known as the Buddha. He is handsome. You can’t take your eyes off him.” Describing each of them, she said, “He has the 32 major marks etc. of a great being. He is calm, peaceful, and tamed. His clairvoyance and psychic powers have no obstruction. He treats all [page 249] migratory sentient beings with loving-kindness and compassion, with such love as if he is their parent.”

She explained in great detail these and other exceptional qualities of the Buddha. They were deeply moved. “Is there a chance that we can meet this spiritual preceptor of yours? Will we be able to invite him here if we try?”, they asked. Sangmo replied, “Physical distance and selectiveness in one’s kindness do not exist for my teacher. If one prays to him, he will come and can be seen.”

The family cleaned the house. They set exceptional offerings. Taking some incense and flowers, Sangmo went to the roof of the house. Turning towards the direction where the Buddha dwelled, she folded her hands and, with eyes wet with tears, prayed, “Buddha, this disciple of yours has come to live in this region much like an animal driven from a lotus pond. However, there is no selectiveness in your loving compassion. Please consider being my guest tomorrow.”

She folded her hands. She sprinkled flowers. With sweet fragrance, the white, yellow, red and blue flowers gradually rose to the sky, amidst incense smoke. They gently fell in Magadha at the Buddha’s feet amidst melodious words of Magadha Sangmo’s prayers.

The Buddha said to Ananda, “Tomorrow morning, we are to be guests at Magadha Sangmo’s alms offering. It is far away, at a distance of a hundred and sixty pagtsad. We have to cover that in half a day. Distribute counting sticks among the monks who have psychic powers.”

At midnight, Ananda distributed the counting sticks. Purnomaitreyaniputra, an old monk, reclining with a vase for his pillow, stretched his hands out to pick out a counting stick. Ananda smiled and said, “Purnomaitreyaniputra, we are not going on foot to the house of Anaathpindika’s daughter tomorrow. She is a hundred and sixty pagtsad away. We have to arrive at her Bhuramshingphel region in half a day. We are going there through psychic power.”

[page 250]

Purnomaitreyaniputra did not have that ability. He became dejected. He lowered his head. “Because of a subtle obscuration on account of non-virtue from immemorable past, I have no psychic powers even though I have attained arhatship. What an embarrassing matter this is in front of one’s community”, he thought. By meditating that night, he instantly attained the psychic powers.

Early the next morning, the arhats who had the psychic ability put on fine robes, congregated at the assembly hall, and rose into the sky.

Far away at Bhuramshingphel region, Magadha Sangmo along with her stepparents and household servants were at the rooftop of their house. They were finely dressed and searching the sky with flowers and parasols in their hands. Magadha Sangmo prayed,

“The refuge of each and every sentient being,
The truly divine one who has overcome all maras and their hosts,
The one who knows everything as they really are – Fully Enlightened One,
We invite you here together with your followers.”

A very dignified monk having a radiance comparable to the sun arrived on a chariot, from the sky. The stepparents and all others saw him. They were amazed. “Is this the Buddha?” they asked. “He is the monk Ajnatakaundinya”, Sangmo replied.

Another monk arrived astride a mountain. “Is this your teacher now?” “No, this is Mahakashyapa, who is like a tree of gold. He is supreme among disciples who dwell at peace in practicing austerities”, explained Sangmo.

Another one arrived, who seemed to be riding a roaring lion. “Is this he?” “No, this is Mogallanaputra, who is of supreme merit”, explained Sangmo.

Another one arrived on a golden flower with deep blue leaves. Fragrance filled the atmosphere. “Is this he?” “This is also not him; this is the monk known as Anurudha.”

Another monk arrived at high velocity. He appeared to ride a garuda whose flapping wings were dispersing the clouds in the skies. “Is this he?” “No, this is Purnomaitreyaniputra, the son of Jhama.”

An extremely peaceful [page 251] monk arrived. He appeared on what seemed to be a pond. “Is this he?” “No, this is Asvajit, who is supreme among those who have tamed their minds.”

Another one arrived. People perceived him as riding a plantain tree with swaying leaves. Magadha Sangmo explained that this was Upali, the monk with clear and complete merit.

Another monk arrived. They perceived him astride a blue palatial mansion adorned with designs of gold and sparkling linings of precious stones. She explained that this was the monk Kaatyan.

Another monk arrived. He was firmly riding a buffalo. Sangmo explained that this was the monk Kaushila, who was known for his firm mind.

Another appeared on a swan, radiating rays of light. She explained that this was the monk Silindpadapa, supreme among practitioners of austerities.

Another one arrived. They saw him astride trees and golden lotus pond. She explained that he was Shronakotīkran, who has no attachment to any object of the world.

Again, another one arrived. He was turning a wheel which appeared to fill all directions with golden light. She explained that this was Rahul, the Buddha’s son.

Then, the entire landscape became illuminated with rays of light. Innumerable monks appeared. After that, amidst an innumerable array of offerings held by goddesses, accompanied by Brahma and Sakra who were surrounded by divinities, and accompanied by divinities of wealth such as the Four Guardian Kings, in the splendor of golden rays of light appeared the Buddha descending from the sky, and from eighteen different gates which appeared from nowhere in the city, from each of these gates a Buddha came.

The Buddha manifested a crystal mansion. He and his followers took their seats in the mansion. Along with her relatives and acquaintances and others, Magadha Sangmo honored the assembly with great wealth and performed prostrations at their feet. Those of the public who could not find seats inside made offerings from outside the mansion. [page 250] To all present, the insides of the mansion were as clear as a mural on the wall. The Buddha and the assembly accepted the offerings.

The Buddha gave an extensive Dharma talk to Magadha Sangmo’s household members, and the public present on the occasion. All of them saw truth. All those regions became followers of the Buddha’s teachings.

Magadha Sangmo Tagpo Chopa

Translated by Geshe Cheme Tsering

Salutation to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

The Buddha was residing at Prince Jeta’s Grove in Shravasti. Then, at that time in Shravasti, there lived a daughter of Anaathpindika called Su Magadha. She was devout, good-natured, of virtuous mind, benefitting oneself and others.

In the town known as Pundravardhana, another merchant had a son named Khyuchogzin. He cultivated other, non-Buddhist, teachers. As such, he was devout towards the Jains.

At the time, when the Buddha demonstrated the great miraculous powers, the non-Buddhist teachers remained on the sidelines. Some of them stayed in the town called Zangjhed. Some in Mudgirika. Some lived in Pundravardhana.

Khyuchogzin had not started a family up to that time. The Jains told him “Anaathpindika has a daughter by the name of Su Magadha. She is attractive, pleasing to the eye, beautiful, and is like a noble person.” Hearing this, he disguised himself as a Jain and set out for Shravasti.

When he went to beg at Anaathpindika’s home, he saw the daughter. Upon laying eyes on the daughter, he became completely attached to her. He accepted the alms by extending his hat. Seeing this improper behaviour, she laughed, remarking, “He is accepting alms thoughtlessly.”

Khyuchogzin felt ashamed and, returning to Pundravardhana, related the incident to his father. He sought the girl’s hand in marriage. When Anaathpindika reported this to the Buddha, the Buddha said, “… When this Su Magadha goes to Pundravardhana, she will fulfill the purpose of the Order and the purpose of Buddha.” After some time, after telling this to the relatives, Anaathpindika gave his daughter and she was taken to Pundravardhana.

At another time, Jains were having food in that home and the mother-in-law summoned her. “Today, mendicants are having food in our home. Come to see them.” Upon hearing it, Su Magadha felt delighted and said to herself, “Definitely, either the great Shariputra, or Maudgalyāyana, or others have come.”

Happily and confidently, she went. She saw naked ascetics. (…) Just as she saw them, Sumagadha felt embarrassed and averted her eyes. The stepmother asked “My daughter, why are you disappointed?”

Sumagadha asked “If people like this are mendicants, then what would non-mendicants be like?” The other one asked “My daughter, do you have some teacher far better than this.”

“At my father’s temple at the Jeta Grove. There is a teacher called a Buddha. He is the object of reverence to both the animate and inanimate world,” she replied.

“What does your teacher look like?”

“My preceptor is pure as gold. Like pure gold he is without stain. He is pure in ethics. He is very pure in knowledge. He has no comparison in the three worlds. He is beyond migratory beings.”

(page 908)

They became very happy upon hearing this. They said, “Daughter, can you show us that Buddha tomorrow?”

Sumagadha replied, “Prepare clean foods. We shall invite him tomorrow.”

“We will prepare clean foods. You should invite the Buddha”, they said after some time.

Sumagadha went to the roof of the house. Turning towards the direction where the Buddha was dwelling, she folded her hands. She prostrated. Remembering his qualities she sprinkled flowers. She grounded incense. To invite the Buddha she also set the water of gold vase. In beautiful voice she called out, Buddha, the Compassionate One, I am forlorn like a forest animal in hinterlands. I am separated from the Three Jewels. Think of me. Please come here with the Sangha”. She also called him in this way: Pure in conduct and very pure in knowledge / O great hearers, you core of the devout ones / To help me who is forlorn / kindly visit us in your compassion!”

The flowers and incense and water in the gold vase gradually rose into the air.

At that time the Buddha also rose from meditative immersion and gave teachings to the four assemblies. The water in gold vase remained before the Buddha like a plant of vaidurya. The flowers hovered above him like a multi-storied dwelling. The incense smokes also appeared, taking the shape of clouds. Seeing these Ananda asked the Buddha, “Lord, these inviters, where are they from?” “They are from … A city which is a hundred and sixty three pagtsad away. Ananda, that city is held by outsiders. Distribute counting sticks among the monks and nuns, announcing that we shall go there by pschyic mastery.

Starting with the elders, Ananda laid the counting sticks. He also announced, “Tomorrow we shall go to … That city is held by outsiders. Those among you who have attained psychic mastery should take the counting sticks. Starting with the elders the monks began taking the counting sticks. Purnakundaudpada, an elder, was also present at that place. Also, he reached out for a counting stick. “We are not going to Anaathpindika’s residence,” Ananda said. “A hundred and sixty three pagtsad away, there is a city known as … We are going there.” The monk thought to himself, “Since I have abandoned delusions with which I had been habituated to from beginningless time, what difficulty could be there in psychic mastery, an attainment that is common with the outsiders?” and exerted himself. Before the second round of distribution began he attained the mastery. Reaching out for it like an elephant extending its trunk, he stretched his hand and took a counting stick. Standing beside the elders Ananda announced that those who have taken the sticks should go to …

In the morning the second day, the monks set out using their psychic mastery. The four guardian kings also wanted to witness the happenings in Shravasti.

(page 911) After some time, the monk known as Ājnatkondinya arrived at Pundravardhana on a chariot drawn by horses. It appeared that when he arrived there was a gentle rain amidst lightening in the sky. Displaying his own mastery of psychic powers in this way, he arrived. Sumagadha’s husband asked her, “Sumagadh, is he your teacher?” She replied, “He is Ājnatkondinya. When the Buddha turned the wheel of law the first time, he was the one who realized non-self.”

(In different ways characterized by display of psychic mastery, the Elders) Ājnatkondinya, Mahākasyap, Shariputra, Maudgalyāyana, Anurudha, Purnomaitreyaniputra, Asvajit, Upāli, Mahākātyān, Mahākoshtril, Shronakotīkran and Rāhul (and others) arrived. (The Sutra gives detailed information of this including Subhadra’s introduction of each of these and other disciples. Page 911-919)

(page 919) The city had eighteen gates. Manifesting a Buddha at each of these gates, the Buddha came to Sumagadha’s home. Not being able to see the Buddha, the large number of people became restive. They started attacking Sumagadha’s home. The Buddha blessed the city in such a way that the entire place appeared as a crystal city. In each home they perceived a Buddha.

Hundreds and thousands of people including Sumagadha honored the Buddha with flowers, scented waters, flower garlands and incense. With the view to give them a teaching hearing which Sumagadha and hundreds and thousands of sentient beings would actually see the truth, the Buddha gave such a Dharma teaching. (page 920) All in the audience became inclined towards the Buddha. They flowed into the Dharma. They came to the Sangha.

The monks became confused, and they asked the Buddha, the Dispeller of Uncertainties, “How wonderful it is, Lord, that there is Sumagadh! How wonderful it is that hundreds and thousands of sentient beings have become inclined towards the higher rebirths and liberation! How wonderful it is that she has done the deed of a Buddha!” The Buddha said, “Not only at this time, but also in the past she had done the deeds of a Buddha. Listen to this.

Monks, once in the past, when people could live twenty thousand years, there appeared in the world a Buddha known as Kashyapa. He was endowed with (clear) vision, (virtuous) conduct, gone into bliss, knower of worlds, the incomparable leader of men to be tamed, unsurpassed, teacher of gods and humans, the completely enlightened one. Also at that time, there ruled in the city of Varanasi the king Krikrī. A girl with a golden garland was born to him. He gave her the name Ser(gold) Treng(garland).

When she grew up, in the company of five hundred girls she paid honor to the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kashyapa. (page 921) She developed genuine faith in him. She decided to honor Buddha Kashyapa with robes, alms, bedclothes, medicine and resources so long as she lived. Again, at that time, in one night king Krikrī happen to see ten dreams. An elephant, the leader of a flock, had emerged out of a window. But its tail was stuck in it.

A man in an ocean was reaching out from a well. A man was exchanging a bag of pearls for a bag of dust. Sandalwood was being regarded as ordinary wood. Thieves were marauding a garden having flowers and fruits. An elephant cub was expelling the chief of elephants. A monkey with feces on its body was smearing others with it. A monkey was being anointed as king. A piece of cloth, though being pulled in eighteen directions, remained intact. A great mass of people came together. They fought, argued, waged war and found fault with each other. So, they perished. When the king woke up after that, he became frightened. He was sad and apprehensive about his life. He wanted to know if he was going to lose the throne.

(page 922) Collecting Brahmins who could interpret dream omens, he related those dreams. They also harbored hatred against Sertrengcan (Sumagadha in her previous life). So, they said, “Lord, we recommend that you perform a fire offering. It should include the heart of the one whom you hold dearest.”

Deeply dejected, the king thought, “The one dearest to me is my Sertrengcan.” Sertrengcan was also intelligent. When she heard that, she went to the king. “Lord, when the sun is shining, what need is there for lamps? The enlightened Buddha Kashyapa is at the Deer Park. Ask him. Whatever that Buddha advises you, uphold that.”

Then, king Krikrī made a public announcement that he would be going to Varanasi where the Buddha is presently residing. With a public numbering hundreds of thousands, and with Sertrengcan, he went to the dwelling place of the Buddha. Performing prostration at the feet of the Buddha, he sat down before him to listen to Dharma teachings. Presently, he got up and bowing with folded hands, (page 923) he said, “Lord, there in one night I had ten dreams. Elephant emerging from the window and its tail being stuck there and so on as mentioned earlier. Lord, please tell me what do they mean.”

“O Great king,” the Buddha replied, “Do not be afraid. Your kingdom will not decline. There is also no danger to your life. O great king, they relate to another matter. When people’s lifespan come down to a hundred years in the future, a fully enlightened Buddha known as Shakyamuni will appear in the world. In the future after him, there will be disciples who are unrestrained in body, unrestrained in mind, not bound by precepts and with untamed knowledge. Leaving behind relatives, they will take the going forth. Regarding their monasteries as if they are their home, they will become attached. The elephant emerging from the window but the tail stuck there is pre-indication of this.

O Great king, you saw a dream in which reaching out to the well from outside. It is indication that, even though those disciples will teach the Dharma (page 924) to those who live in the monastery, the listeners will not be interested to listen. They will not retain it in their mind. This is indicated.

O Great king, the dream about one exchanging a bag of pearls for a bag of dust is indication about his disciples. Just for the sake of food, they will elaborately expound on the Indriyas, the powers and the precious factors of enlightenment. The pre-indication of that is this.

O Great King, you dreamt people regarding sandalwood as if it is an ordinary piece of wood. His disciples will take up the words of outsiders (Non-Buddhists) and hold it on the par with words of the Buddha. The pre-indication of that is this.

O Great King, in your dream, thieves were marauding a garden full of flowers and fruits. Among his disciples will be ones with unrestrained in body, untamed in mind, with loose ethics and untamed knowledge. They will pluck out the best flowers and the best fruits of the Order, and give it to householders. The pre-indication of this is that dream.

Great King, you saw in your dream an elephant cub expelling a supreme elephant. Those of his disciples whose ethics are torn, and who are given to non-virtues, they will override Sangha members whose ethics is pure and who are virtuous. The pre-indication of this is that dream.

Great King, you saw a monkey covered with feces and smearing others with it. In his Sangha members will be members whose ethics are torn and who are given to non-virtues. These will criticize those others whose ethics are intact. The pre-indication of this is that dream.

O Great King, you dreamt of a monkey being anointed king. In those times, the ignorant will be appointed kings. The pre-indication of this is that dream.

O Great King, you dreamt of a piece of cloth remaining intact even though it was being pulled apart by eighteen men. Even though his teachings will separate into eighteen, the liberating flavor of the fabric cannot be rent. The pre-indication of this is that dream.

O Great King, you dreamt of a great number of people assembling, and fighting, arguing, waging war and finding fault. His teachings will be sunk by argumentation. The pre-indication of this is that dream.

These endless events will happen in the future.”

The Buddha (Shakyamuni) then said, “With the Buddha Kashyapa also, King Krikrī and Sertrengcan established root virtues conducive to liberation. Monks, what do you think of this: the person who was Sertrengcan at that time is this Sumagadha herself. Now also, she has come and performed deeds of a Buddha.”

The Sangha members again became confused, and asked the Buddha, “Lord, by performing what action was Sertrengcan (born with) a golden garland?”

The Buddha said, “Monks, there is a deed that she has performed in the past when she was wife to another farmer, the stringed together flowers of many colors into a garland and strung that flower garland to a stupa dedicated to the memory a Pratykbuddha. As a ripening result of that action, she was born with the golden garland.

Therefore, monks, (page 927) definitely dark actions will produce consequences that are definitely dark. Definitely white actions will produce consequences that are definitely white. Mixed actions will have mixed ripening results. Monks, therefore abandon actions that are definitely dark and that are mixed. Apply yourselves to actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train like that.”

When the Buddha said that, those monks praised what he had said. This concludes the account of Sumagadha.

In the text below, the author refers to the story of a Buddhist princess being forced to marry a Bon practitioner. He mentions that it was depressing to watch Bonpo rituals being conducted for the Buddhist princess, saying that it was just as bad as if Magadha Zangmo had left Buddha Shakyamuni to follow the Jain teachers of her husband’s faith.

The Lineage Tree of Dorje Shugden

Before Dorje Shugden arose, his immediate previous incarnation was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen. However, many incarnations before that, the very incarnation of Dorje Shugden was actually Magadha Sangmo who was a direct disciple of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. Later, Magadha Sangmo reincarnated to become Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, the famous scholar Panchen Sonam Drakpa, followed by Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen and then Dorje Shugden.

Therefore below is the lineage tree of Dorje Shugden (a.k.a. Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen) where Magadha Sangmo appears as the first incarnation in the top left (circled), in her traditional pose of offering incense to the Buddhas.

Magadha Sangmo, who is the first incarnation of Dorje Shugden and a student of Buddha Shakyamuni, is circled in the top left of this lineage tree thangka. Click on the image to enlarge

Magadha Sangmo, who is the first incarnation of Dorje Shugden (and later Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen), depicted as offering incense to her guru Buddha Shakyamuni

At the very centre of the thangka is Dorje Shugden. Immediately above Dorje Shugden is a close list of lamas who held his lineage. From top to bottom, the list of lineage lamas begins at Gaden Yiga Choling (or Tushita Heaven) where Buddha Maitreya resides and from where the practice of Dorje Shugden originates. To Maitreya’s left is Lama Tsongkhapa in the yellow hat; to Maitreya’s right is Atisha in the red hat. Below Tushita is Lama Tsongkhapa followed by Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, Mahasiddha Tagphu Dorje Chang Pemavajra, Je Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, Yongzin Trijang Dorje Chang and then His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche.

The left and right groups of lamas branching out from the principal deity Dorje Shugden depicts the previous incarnations of Dorje Shugden.

The left branch of the thangka depicting the previous incarnations of Dorje Shugden, starting with Manjushri

In the left branch of lamas, just below Yamantaka, the previous incarnations of Dorje Shugden begin with Manjushri followed Venerable Magadha Sangmo (circled), Mahasiddha Virupa, Thonmi Sambhota, the Dharma King Trisong Detsen, Mahasiddha Naropa, Akaramati, Ngok Loden Sherab, Khyungpo Naljor and Je Khutonpa Chenpo.

The right branch of the thangka depicting the previous incarnations of Dorje Shugden. Under Heruka is Ra Lotsawa Dorje Drag. The lama at the bottom right of this group is Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen who arose to become Dorje Shugden

From top to bottom (and left to right) is Ra Lotsawa Dorje Drag, Khenchen Shakya Shri, Kunkhyen Chokyi Ozer, Thamche Khyenpa Buton Rinchen Drub, Sakya Pandita, Tsarchen Losel Gyatso, Panchen Sonam Drakpa, Tulku Yeshe Wangpo, Tulku Ngawang Sonam Geleg and finally Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who arose to become Dorje Shugden.

Gyenze (Ratna Shugden on the horse) and Shize (Vairochana Shugden on the elephant)

To Dorje Shugden’s left and right are depictions of his emanations, known as the five families of Dorje Shugden (Shugden Rig Nga). On the left and seated on the horse is Gyenze (Ratna Shugden) whilst Shize (Vairochana Shugden) rides on an elephant.

Wangze (Pema Shugden on the dragon) and Trakze (Karma Shugden on the wrathful garuda)

To the right, seated on the dragon is Wangze (Pema Shugden) and on the wrathful garuda is Trakze (Karma Shugden).

MA LU SEM CHEN KUN GYI GON GYUR CHING
DU TE PUNG CHAY MI ZAY JOM DZAY LHA
NGO NAM MA LU YANG DA KYEN GYUR PAY
CHOM DEN KOR CHAY NAY DIR SHEG SU SOL

(第248页第4行)来源 – Losel Gakye: Annotated Commentary on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment,嘉杰札贡仁波切

Thank you H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche for all your teachings, guidance and especially the sharing of Magadha Sangmo’s story which is very inspiring in the sense that one can have such a deep faith in Dharma and practiced wholeheartedly without any second thoughts with sincere offerings to Lord Buddha, giving her very best that she had.

Her act of making incense offerings and reciting the verse of invocation which started the tradition of invocation prayer, benefited us by showing us the way of doing it.

Not only that, she had taught and showed us the way of real Dharma practice through kindness and compassion with the sole objective of liberating us from this samsara cycle by keep returning to samsara as great Buddhist Masters or even as ordinary incarnations to turn the Dharma wheel, benefiting us.

It is an interesting and inspiring story that we should keep in mind and practice the qualities of Magadha Sangmo:
    1. Due to the kindness of Magadha Sangmo and her strong faith in Buddha, she agreed to marry to Gokhara, with the condition that will invite the Buddha and His disciples to their home for a meal.
    2. Magadha Sangmo was humbled and generous to make offerings to Buddha. She pray sincerely and offered incense requested the Buddha together with his disciples to please come to her home and receive alms. Due to Magadha Sangmo’s faith and devotion that the people of Gokhara were benefited and able to meet with Buddha, receive the Dharma and have their minds liberated. Many of them took refuge in the Buddha and the Three Jewels.

    Dear Rinpoche,
Such an inspiring story of Magadha Sangmo whom with such faith and devotion towards Buddha and his teachings. Magadha Sangmo whom was born in an era where woman rights and opinions were not widely accepted. Her 110% focus and devotion is of a good learning and motivation for myself . This proves any ordinary person could attain spiritual attainment through correct motivation, faith, devotion, dharma knowledge and mind transformation.

Thank you Rinpoche for the great sharing.

It’s really not easy to have such a strong faith in Buddha (or Dharma) especially the status of a woman at that era was not at an advantageous level. Salute for her strong faith!

  8. Sarah on Apr 26, 2018 at 6:06 pm

Magadha Sangmo’s story is truly inspiring. It is a good example to use when teaching faith and devotion to students of Buddhism. In “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand”, Pabongka Rinpoche, with reference to the deities of the merit field, said that we must have the attitude that they are there in person. We cannot see them because of our karma and obscurations. But if we try to visualise them, the deities will take their place in front of us. So it is good to make offerings, as much as we can, even though we can’t see the deities. Eventually, after purifying our negative karma and collecting a vast amount of merits, we will be able to see them.

Incredible and inspiring article on Magadha Zangmo. Thank you Rinpoche and team well done with good research on these beautiful Magadha Zangmo. It seem that Magadha Zangmo had a great impact on Buddhism throughout the ancient world. Due to her faith and Guru devotion to Lord Shakyamuni that many people of Gokhara were benefited from Buddha teachings and to meet with Buddha too. Many recorded accounts of Magadha Zangmo has indicated that she was a very special being. Living her life fully to serve Buddha and dharma to benefit countless of people with her generosity and compassion.
    Thank You again Rinpoche.

Magadha Sangmo’s story is inspiring as it shows with great faith and sincere devotion, the Buddha will hear one’s prayer. With just a simple offering of incense, she managed to invite Buddha and his whole entire retinue to come to her house, with a great motivaion to bring the Dharma to Gokhara.

I am also amazed by her willingness to marry Ugga so that she can bring the Dharma to him, his family and that region. That is how strong her faith in the Dharma and her pure motivation to benefit so many sentient beings. What strikes out is that even in her previous life she was also doing the same thing, in Buddha Kasyapa’s time she was also a daughter of great King; King Krkin, who was also the main patron of the Buddha Kasyapa.

It shows that Magadha Sangmo was no ordinary being and has a mission to spread Dharma to lands where there is no Dharma! And many many life times, this seem to be pattern.

Another thing that striked out was that because of Magadha Sangmo, we now have the wonderful invocation verses which all of us in Vajrayana Buddhism would say at the very beginning of our prayers to invoke upon the Buddha and his great retinue to appear. It seems like she is someone who is a starter of new Dharmic activities and spiritual trend that becomes historical. In many ways she reminds me of Buddha Mother Tara as well.

This is really an incredible and inspiring story of a female incarnation, and as far as i understand it is quite rare. And furthermore she is the 1st incarnation of Tsem Rinpoche! Really great for a married woman to be so seriously devoted to spiritual practice and bring dharma to benefit more people. Hope there would be more people and incarnations like Magadha Sangmo _/\_

  12. William Chua on Aug 9, 2016 at 11:15 am

Magadha Sangmo’s story is one of inspiration. The whole reason she married to a far away land is because she wanted to bring Buddhism to his family by hosting a meal to the Buddha and his retinue. She did it skillfully when her family invited mendicants to their house for a meal and introduced the Buddha to them. Because of her sincerity and devotion to the Buddha, her prayers were answered and the Buddha and his retinue visited her house through psychic travel. With this visit, it made the whole town/area lighted up and it’s people in awe of what Buddha can do. People then believed in the Buddha and many minds were planted with seeds of enlightenment because of her action.

This story shows us that when we are sincere and devoted, then we can see results in our practice, We do not need to be a monk in order to achieve enlightenment. It was her practice from lifetime after lifetime that she is able to achieve this in Buddha’s time. It serves as an example for us to continue on with our practice.

  13. Sock Wan on Aug 8, 2016 at 8:32 pm

This is a very inspiring story. Why?

    1. Magadha Sangmo was a married woman, she had to serve the husband, the parent-in-law and take care of the household but yet she did not neglect her Dharma practice.

    2. She was very sincere, it was always in her mind that she wanted to bring Dharma to everyone because she knew how precious Dharma is.

    3. She had very great faith in Buddha Shakyamuni, she understood guru devotion is a very important element to gaining attainments.

    4. Even though she was a woman, not ordained at all, with her great faith in the 3 Jewels, she eventually gained attainments.

Therefore, one does not have to be a Sangha to practice Dharma. Being a lay practitioners, if we practice sincerely, we will be able to gain attainments as well.

  15. justin cheah on Aug 8, 2016 at 8:14 pm

It is significant to know that it was Magadha Sangmo’s devotion and deep faith in Buddha that brought benefits to so many people till today. Her life story depicted through her sincere offerings that brought benefits not only to herself who later on be reborn as a daughter of a King and then after the next life as a daughter of a sponsor of Buddha after the good virtue of introducing Buddha to her father king.

This story inspires people to gain faith in Buddha and encourages people to engage into spiritual practice consistently because Magadha Sangmo’s further line of reincarnation is the High Lamas and Dorje Shugden(!). She made PROMISE to make offerings in her all her future lifetimes, Lord Duldzin also made PROMISE to Nechung to becoming the protector of our life time and look now Dorje Shugden have benefitted so so many people.

Her life story also disseminated the message to the whole world that Enlightenment is not only for male but female can also make offerings and become attained. It was also through her that the tradition of making offerings to the Buddha is widely practised even till today.

Thank you for this in depth research of Magadha Sangmo’s life story because it does help to sharpen my knowledge about reincarnation line of Dorje Shugden 🙂

  18. jerry_sito on Aug 8, 2016 at 6:17 pm

Great to know the first incarnation of Tulku Dragpa Gyeltsen is Magadha Sangmo. The story of Magadha Sangmo is inspirational and so beneficial for future generations.

  20. Wah Ying on Nov 27, 2015 at 11:00 pm

  21. June Kang on Nov 27, 2015 at 1:55 am

This really is an inspiring article that touches on dharma, guru devotion, miracles, compassion, and the early incarnation of Dorje Shugden.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing these wonderful information on this inspiring lady and not forgetting the much effort put in by everyone who has done such extensive research. Magadha Sangmo is inspiring because she was just an “ordinary lady” but with her pure and strong devotion and faith towards the Dharma and the Buddha, she was able to spread the Dharma far and wide wherever she went.

This story is also a good example that a devoted and sincere practitioner can gain realizations even when we are not living the life of a monk or nun. Nothing is impossible. The only thing that is standing in our way is actually ourselves. Magadha Sangmo, in her previous life was also the daughter to one of the Buddha Kasyapa’s main sponsors. In that life, she was also already very devoted to the Dharma and Buddha, hence introduced his father, King Kirin to the Buddha. Magadha Sangmo’s story is spellbinding because she agreed to a marriage in exchange for a chance for Buddha to visit the spiritually barbaric land and spread the dharma. In our eyes, it may seemed like a sacrifice, yet it is the right thing for her to do. Therefore if spreading Buddha Dharma is something we want to do from the whole of our heart, then personal considerations will not get into the way.

What leaves me completely at awe also is the fact that this wonderful, noble, devoted and sincere disciple of the Buddha is the first incarnation of Dorje Shugden.

It is important for us to preserve this lineage in its purest form possible so that practitioner in the future will be able to study and practice what Magadha Sangmo had started as well as to continue Dorje Shugden lineage.

Thank you very much Rinpoche and team for the comprehensive and thorough compilation of the stories and lineage of Magadha Sangmo.

    With folded palm, bowing down,
    Stella

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the story of Magadha Sangmo. She is “just” one young lady but her presence and contribution in the Dharma is still felt strongly in the world of Buddhism today, 2500 years later. er story is recognized by all the schools of Buddhism: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. Her practice of generosity and making offering to the 3 Jewels are commonly practiced by all Buddhists of today.

I was thinking: Wow, Magadha Sangmo must have done something really right in her previous life! True enough, it is shared in the story she was also a devoted student of Buddha Kashyapa in her previous life. This reflects on the fundamental teaching of Buddhism which is karma, the law of cause and effect.

Magadha Sangmo’s consistent effort over a couple of lifetimes lead her to continue to take rebirth in better and better conditions to be close to the Dharma and benefit millions.

Learning from Magadha Sangmo’s story, I see that we can each chose to follow her foot steps that will lead us to always be close to a Guru and the Dharma.

The various stories about Magadha Sangmo is very remarkable and inspiring. So much had been written and documented in English, Chinese, Tibetan, Pali and Sanskrit in history in numerous authoritative scriptural sources about Magadha Sangmo. These stories are very meaningful and we could emulate her fine examples.

What is most inspiring is that Magadha Sangmo is the first incarnation of Dorje Shugden! I truly rejoice in my great fortunes and merits to meet the Incomparable Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden and to have the opportunities to engage in Dorje Shugden practices. My faith in Dorje Shugden has grown even deeper through knowing the enlightened deeds of Magadha Sangmo.

Magadha Sangmo’s strong faith and pure devotion towards the Buddha is very commendable. Due to her compassion for others especially for the people of Gokhara, she would sacrificed herself by marrying a non-Buddhist. Her faith in invoking the Buddha to come to receive her offerings is really commendable! With this faith and devotion, she had made the Dharma available to countless people and many had been liberated therefrom.

Each time when I recite the invocation prayer to the Enlightened Ones, from now on, I will recall how Magadha Sangmo had invoked upon Lord Buddha.

I hope many more people will read Magadha Sangmo’s biographies and be blessed and inspired by her enlightened deeds.

Thank You Rinpoche for this inspiring post.

Magadha Sangmo was an incredible devotee to the Buddha by her full trust and faith in him when all she had to do was to invoke a prayer with an incense to invite him to her abode. Pure dharmic devotion, faith and trust does not come just like that. She had created the cause for suchness from the result of her guru devotion from many previous lives. Furthermore, she was NOT a sangha, but just a lay person. This shows us that anyone with pure devotion, faith and trust in the Buddha dharma can gain such results. Her generous offerings of dana continuously is one of the 6 paramitas of the qualities of bodhicitta and she practices this in lives after lives. So for lay people like us, we can also come to practice the same, such as dana offerings or whatever kind of offerings including our devotion to the Buddha, dharma and sangha is the way to enlightenment, or at least to higher rebirths.

And on the above thangka, Magadha manifested in the form of a female connected to Dorje Shugden. Is she the first female form of Dorje Shugden too? Dorje Shugden can be one of the 18 forms of manifestation of the Buddha when he was invited to Magadha Sangmo’s residence. This connection certainly arouses my curiosity.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you sharing this with us this great article on Magadha Zhangmo. It was her faith and devotion to Lord Buddha that has brought so many people in Gokhata into Buddhism.

By agreeing to marrying Ugga if he promise ton invite Lord Buddha and his Entourage to Gokhara show that Magadha Zhangmo is very devoted to her Guru, and also skillful by inviting Lord Buddha to Gokhara has converted people in Gokhara to Buddhism. Magadha Zhangmo is an inspiration to us that we should have strong faith and Guru Devotion in our spiritual practice, sincerity, altruistic motivation to benefit others.

I am happy that knowing that the lineage of Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsen traced back to Magadha Zhangmo who was Lord Buddha student, and who attained Arhatship in that lifetime. It proofs that the incarnation of Dorje Shugden are Great practitioner, and Great Master who not only is attained in the practice, but also have strong Guru Devotion that is the source of all attainment.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for sharing this precious article on Magadha Sangmo, which is not only appear in Tibetan language Buddhist Text but also in others important Buddhist language text.

Since the 1st incarnation until the manifestation of Protector Dorje Shugden, the dharma works that Magadha Sangmo did is very persistent and bring much benefit to sentient being. Magadha Sangmo has brought dharma to where there was no Dharma, showing us the strong Guru devotion, the way to serve and offer food to Buddha. In fact, in every reincarnation of Dorje Shugden’s previous life it is always been a scholar and High Lamas. They have “enrich” the Buddhists’ teachings and to bring tremendous benefit all sentient beings. Such as: In the 1st reincarnation of Dorje Shugden- Magadha Sangmo, she called upon Buddha to come to her house, the prayer have now become the Invocation text in today’s puja. Mahasiddha Bivapa stopped animal scarify in an area where no there was dharma, and Bivapa brought them dharma, Translator Loden Sherab did a lot of Buddhist’s text translation to Tibetan language, Tonmi have improved the Tibetan language. The Dorje Shugden lineage is very firm in holding dharma and give dharma to non-sangha members.

Once again Thank you Rinpoche and the team who have making intensive research on Magadha Sangmo and make it easy for us to read.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the incredible story of Magadha Sangmo. Reading Her story giving me lots of confidence and believe that my protector do hear me if i am sincere. My increases my faith in Dharma. She proved to us how powerful one’s guru devotion. In her case, due to her guru devotion with her pure motivation to bring Dharma to her family and she sincerely invited the Lord Buddha, her request was heard and accepted by Lord Buddha. It was 160 miles away. Because of that many have the fortunate to meet Lord Buddha and listened to the Dharma from Lord Buddha himself. Her merit was so great, that life after life she incarnated back as a Bodhisattva to teach and to bring Dharma to countless people. She created the tradition of making sang offerings to invite the Buddha and Bodhisatva to come.

So when we are doing our Sadhana, we say the invocation, does Dorje Shugden really come? Does He hear my prayers, my request and my dedication? I cannot see Him even though He has come so low to get so close to our realm in order to hear and see us so that He can help us. Due to our negative karma, we don’t see Him. Does that means He’s not here? Well, Buddha says: virtuous will be seen… so, I trust and I believe He’s always here. That’s why until today our lineage is preserved. Our lineage is back to Magadha Sangmo, 2500 years ago the Buddha time.

So do not give up on your prayers. Your prayers will be heard if you are sincere. You shall see how quick Dorje Shugden come and get things done for you, giving his guidance skillfully, lead you to the correct path, show you signs and miracles. So, believe, trust and have faith to H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and our Protector Dorje Shugden. We gain merits to be able to serve the Guru. Although we cannot see the divine but we will when we practice seriously and achieve attainment. For now visualize our Guru as one with protector.

Thank you writer team. May whoever read about Magadha Sangmo gain faith in their Gurus.

Thank you Rinpoche and the hard working research team for sharing this amazing and incredible biography of Magadha Sangmo.
It is indeed very inspiring and touching to learn that Magadha Sangmo has great faith, pure devotion and practiced generosity of dana offering make her gain the power to bring dharma to many especially to the people where she lived in Gokhara City. She later attained arhatship in that life time.
One of her great deeds that impressed me most is Magadha Sangmo used incense to invoke her Guru Shakyamuni and this tradition is still practiced today across all buddhist tradition. She also composed the invocation prayer requested Lord Buddha together with his disciples to come to her home and receive alms . This heartfelt invitation of the Buddha by Magadha Sangmo has since become archetypal for ritual invocation practiced today.
It is also interesting to know that Magadha Sangmo is considered the first incarnation of the great master Tulku Drakpa Gyelten!!

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you, Rinpoche, for this detailed story of Magadha Sangmo. Magadha Sangmo inspires us with her extraordinary faith in Lord Buddha and her devotion to Him. Like her father , she inspires us by her generosity in making Dana offerings to the Buddha and the Sangha. She created the causes for the Dharma to spread mainly through her pure faith and devotion to the Buddha and her excellent Dana Offering.

It most inspiring to read how this very faith and devotion propelled her to accept a non-Buddhist as a husband,so that she could bring him, his family and a whole community in Gokhara into the Dharma. One can never ever forget that part of the story, where with utmost faith, she went up to the rooftop of her house so far away from the Buddha, to invoke the Buddha and His retinue to visit her home. The Buddha responded and came as she had expected, and as she had told her husband and parents-in-law He would.

She sets a fine example for us to follow on faith and devotion, and generosity of offering, not only to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, but also to one’s Guru, who , in essence, is the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha.

    Dear Rinpoche,
In Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand, Pabongka Rinpoche refers to Magadha Zangmo as Sumagadha. He said that “the way in which you visualise them (the wisdom beings) coming to you and so on resembles the way Buddha and his retinue came when invited by Sumagadha.” (p. 266)
I was impressed by Magadha Zangmo’s great faith. She also showed great insight by marrying a non-Buddhist who promised her to invite the Buddha, which resulted in her bringing Dharma to the people of Gokhara.

Thank you Rinpoche for this long and extensive article of Magadha Zangmo, her devotion to the Buddha is for us to follow and emulate. She showed us the best path of practicing Buddhism by bringing the Dharma to so many people!

  65. Sofi on Sep 19, 2015 at 11:50 am

Wow, such an amazingly strong Guru devotion/samaya that Buddha received and accepted Magadha Sangmo’s invitation, thru offering of incense and invocation prayers from such a far distance. She was the first to offer invocation prayers and Sang which we are still practising at present times. What more, all this is historical and not some tales told. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article with us and for those who had done such thorough research.

  67. Li Kim on Sep 19, 2015 at 9:10 am

It’s truly amazing what miracles can happen when one has sincere and deep motivation. The Buddha’s compassion and Magadha Zangmo’s virtuous dedication are what I’ve learnt here. When we find something good and precious, in this instance the Dharma, we must want to share it. And we do whatever it takes. By saying that all she wants for marriage was to host one dinner for the Buddha and his retinue, created the causes for the Dharma to spread far and wide. A simple, committed goal which led to tremendous benefit to many lives. This is really a story of virtuous living.

Amazing devotee – this story shows us we do not need to be scholarly to be a great spiritual practitioner but kindness and compassion to all that are stuck in this samsaric ‘ruck’ of a place is the main ingredient…I love this story of Maghada Sangmo. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this….

Thanks Rinpoche for sharing the precious biography of Magadha Zangmo, this is an amazing true story of how the faith for Dharma can benefit so many beings and extremely beneficial to our spiritual path.

Thanks Rinpoche and the blog team for the in-depth research from different sources for the biography. These indicates that the respectful lady, Magadha Zangmo was existed for real, not a legend.

This is a very informative post to know that the first incarnation of Dorje Shugden is Magadha Zangmo. The quality of having great faith in Guru is continued along the lineage, in each incarnations. Another quality that I can see is, this lineage of respectful high beings are actually using their lifes to teach us Dharma. Although they don’t need to be trapped in the physical body to come to this world, they still do it to benefit sentient beings.

Incarnations exist, faith has great power, and enlightenment is possible!

    Dear Rinpoche ,

The first incarnation of Tulku Dragon Gyeltsen in form of Magadha Zangmo’s Guru devotion towards Buddha Shakyamuni is very inspiring. This has serve as a lesson for me that pure motivation from within the heart makes things which seems almost impossible to be possible. I hope to be able to have the same fire of inspiration and motivation in my heart . A lovely article that is worth reading and remembering .
    Thank you Rinpoche .

  72. Datuk May on Sep 18, 2015 at 10:14 pm

From this first recorded incarnation of our Great Protector Dorje Shugden, many rituals and ways of reverence to the Buddhas had been put in place, such as Guru Devotion, offering of incense and Dana offering. The practice of generosity for the Dharma to grow. The power of invocation prayers also began with this incarnation as Magadha Sangmo.

The Dharma teaching by HE Song Rinpoche as to how the Buddhas are always with us and it is for us to be able to see them through good practice and meditation. In the same manner Magadha Sangmo trusted the Buddha will arrive to benefit all the citizens of Gokhara.

The story of Dorje Shugden’s first incarnation is so empowering that this great being had incarnated life time after life time to be of benefit to all sentient being. Amazingly is the records that proves the lineage of Dorje Shugden.

Thank you to the team who did so much research to give us such a comprehensive history of our Protector.

I didn’t grow up with ancient Buddha’s stories, because I believe only in science and don’t believe in miracle powers. Over the years, I become more open about these, and this time, when I read the story of Magadha Sangmo, I feel very touched by Her sincerity & strong faith to Buddha. I too wish I can have the power like Her to bring people to Buddha Dharma, but since I do not have such power, I shall learn up Dharma and debate with logic with people to bring them to Dharma.

This is a very extensive & detail write up about this great being of Magadha Sangmo, with references from difference sources and from different, and it is in both English and Mandarin. I can feel there are a lot of love and care put into producing this article. Thank you Rinpoche and team for such incredible effort in producing this article. I hope this article can become the base for a Wikipedia page for Magadha Sangmo.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you Rinpoche and team of great writers who have helped research, source and find Magadha Sangmo bio and now have it available for us all to read and know the lineage of our beloved protector Dorje Shugden stems from. So much evidence and texts to provide it’s legitimacy has been carefully presented here from the various sources is much appreciated.

Magadha Sangmo’s is definitely no ordinary lady and her devotion and faith to the Guru Buddha is amazing but what I find most amazing and intriguing is when the story describes the recorded accounts of who she was even before she was Magadha Sangmo, she was a poor girl who had made an offering of a crown of flowers to the sanctuary of a Pratyekabuddha and made a vow to continue to do so lifetime after lifetime. Her vow or rather motivation created the merits for her to become who she is and eventually our Guru/Yodam/Dharma Protector today. That to me was simply amazing because it proves like what Rinpoche always advice us, with the right motivation, we can do great things and become a Buddha. That is the key and an inspiring part of her bio for me to take home.

I also learnt that the beautiful Invocation praise we say daily in of sadhana before our request for our Guru’s long life prayer and mantra derived from her calling an invitation out to the Buddhas. Wow… it is such a huge blessing to know this part of our lineage. Thank you Rinpoche, will read it again and familiarize it well to share with others in the future. Each time we discover and connect the dots of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen/Dorje Shugden, we find someone revolutionary that creates something better for the future of our world. I think we are so super duper insanely lucky (if there is such a thing as luck) to be born connected to his lineage. Thank you Rinpoche for your existence.

  75. graceleong on Sep 18, 2015 at 6:37 pm

Wow !! A lot of work and effort must have been put into this article ! There were so many source of reference of this profound teaching highlighted here. Imagine that this was a phenomena that happened during Buddha Shakyamuni’s time, more then 2500 years ago and yet it was so well documented in so many different writings by different schools and scholars.
Magadha Sangmo’s faith and devotion to her Guru stood out for me. Even in her previous lives during a different Buddha’s time (Buddha Kashyapa) her reincarnation potrayed this strong faith and devotion. This virtue carried on lifetime after lifetime and resulted in such a profound phenemena where it became a teaching written in the 84000 teachings of the Kangyur. A simple lay person who had the perfect conditions and used it to convert and benefit many beings to follow the path of the Dharma. The rituals which she used to invite the Buddha has now become the guidelines to our Offering/Invocation Rituals to the Buddha. To contemplate her actions, speech and mind and to put them into practice must bring tremendous results and benefits to others.
Thank you Rinpoche and team for this wonderfully inspiring write up.

It is also great to learn that Magadha Sangmo was the first reincarnation in the lineage of the great Protector Dorje Shugden; together with other highly attained scholars like Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsen, Panchen Sonam Dragpa, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen etc. This is indeed very exciting; the pantheon of the Buddhas are full of mysteries (in a good way) and as we study the Dharma deeper, so many profound teachings and information reveals itself. It’s like a divine puzzle slowly coming together to reveal the full picture, the full TRUTH !
THANK YOU RINPOCHE ! May Rinpoche live a very long life in great health to continue to turn the wheel of Dharma to benefit all sentient beings !!

  76. Stella on Sep 18, 2015 at 6:21 pm

Magadha Sangmo is the perfect depiction of Guru Devotion over and beyond what a normal disciple would do. She is also the example of great spiritual attainments by a lay female.

This is a very detailed and thorough article about someone very important in our lineage. Thank You Rinpoche and team for the hard work to make this available for us.

    With folded palms, humbly,
    Stella

  77. Pastor David Lai on Sep 18, 2015 at 4:37 pm

Incredible story of Su Magadha and its just very neat that the earliest incarnation of Dorje Shugden was to be a female patron and devotee of the Buddha. To these special beings, gender is just mere labels and can be used to benefit sentient beings overcome their fixed notions of gender. I think it is wonderful that we know her story and she seems to be universally accepted in all Buddhist traditions. I love her prayer and how in a display of the Buddha’s supreme powers, he descended from the heavens for the sake of Su Magadha in order to bring Dharma to many within her region.

  78. Wai Meng Wan on Sep 18, 2015 at 2:58 pm

Everynow and then, I need a good story that is inspiring and is insightful. The story of Tulku Dragpa Gyeltsen first incarnation during Buddha Shakyamuni’s really make me joyful and happy. Also that the prayer that Magadha Zangmo made to invite Buddha is also highlighted in this article. She has so much courage to spread the dharma to everyone in her city and achieved arhatship in that lifetime as well as a householder.

    Dear Rinpoche,

I’m reading this article and I will read this again in future.

This is a much awaited article for me (apart from the Illusory Play, the biography on Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, although I found it from another source but having it in Rinpoche’s blog will be a great pleasure and a source for its authencity too). I am very very curious on her story (with deep faith she was able to invite Buddha Shakyamuni and His entourage to her place which was rather faraway), and in a later reincarnation she arose as Dorje Shugden at our time.

Her faith to Buddha Shakyamuni was firm, solid and incredibly astounding, even way before that she has connection with Buddha Kasyapa. Her life story showed me that how faith, endurance and dedication to Dharma will bear it’s fruits someday, definitely. Hence, never underestimate what we can do even at our level now. We have many lifetimes ahead and we can always benefit others somewhere somehow. She also teaches me to be generous and always make offerings to Buddha (even with great faith we can always putting our palms together in great reverence to Buddha and give what we find it pleasant for the day, my personal opinion.)

(Thank you H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche and the dedicated team behind Rinpoche who made this article possible)

    Thank You Rinpoche.

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. May H E Tsem Rinpoche’s sincere advice to reach the far shore of liberation to everyone reading this blog. The most truly generous people are those who give silently without asking any in return. There is no exercise better than reaching and lifting people up. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Well creating and lighting for others we naturally light our own way. Helping others especially those unfortunate ones, make us feel more positive about our own circumstances.

Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .

Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

In this pic, Pastor Seng Piow is sharing Dharma with newbies ~ Sharyn's friends. It's always good to make light offerings at the beginning of new year. By making light offerings, you are able to dispel the darkness of ignorance and achieve wisdom. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

One the day of Losar (new lunar year), it is always beneficial for Buddhist practitioners to get together in making abundant offerings to Buddhas on the altar to usher in goodness, prosperity and well-being of our loved ones. It's more auspicious this year as Losar and the Chinese New Year begin on the same date, 10th Feb, 2024. Back in Penang, our Kechara members came together to decorate the altar with abundance offerings for Dorje Shugden puja @3pm. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Umze for the day was Siew Hong. She's just been with us for slightly more than a year now but she's proven her capability in leading the puja. Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. When she leads, make sure you are there to hear her chant for yourself! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
