One of His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche’s most ardent aspirational prayers is “Where there is no Dharma, let there be the Dharma”, which aptly represents the deeds of Rinpoche’s many previous incarnations, known for bringing Buddhism to places where it had not yet flourished. Now, as a modern Buddhist teacher, Rinpoche connects millions around the world to the sacred essence of Dharma through various social media platforms, YouTube and tsemrinpoche.com where all of these teachings, including those in this post, are provided for free.

This post contains video footage and teachings taken during some of Rinpoche’s travels. In Hong Kong, Rinpoche shared teachings with us at the magnificent Lantau Buddha. In the United States, Rinpoche showed us one of his favourite childhood haunts, Turkey Swamp; and revealed nostalgic memories Rinpoche had of the people closest to him after visiting his adoptive parents’ gravesite. In Thailand, Rinpoche led us to many magnificent Buddhist temples and unique floating markets. In Nepal, Rinpoche gave us a tour of famous pilgrimage sites. At home in Malaysia, Rinpoche played host and showed us the temples in various parts of the country while giving us a taste of the local culture, such as joining Rinpoche on a rickshaw ride. It is easy to tell from this precious footage that no matter where Rinpoche went, he always used the opportunity to share his Dharma knowledge, with no other motivation than his innate compassion to benefit others.

We are happy to share this collection of teaching videos with you, and may you be inspired by them.

On this occasion, Rinpoche also spoke about his thoughts on Dharma work, and the right attitude to approach Dharma work.

“Dharma work is something of a blessing, privilege and honour. We should never do Dharma work thinking we are doing the centre, our guru, others and Buddha a favour. If we think like that, then even offering flowers and incense to the Buddha is doing Buddha a favour? Not so.”

Beautiful art thangka of Guru Rinpoche, Lama Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugden. Lama Tsongkhapa was a famous teacher of Tibetan Buddhism whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Clear explanation of this beautiful piece of art work .
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing.

The Green School is a non-profit, private and international school that provides learning from pre-kindergarten level right up to high school. The Green School is situated along the Ayung River near Ubud, Bali in Indonesia. It has no walls and is nestled amongst rainforests with rice paddy fields nearby. The building is built solely from bamboo, and is powered by the sun. The Green School has made its mission to educate students and the community on sustainable living using an education syllabus that focuses on sustainability through community integration and entrepreneurial learning.

John and Cynthia Hardy founded the Green School in 2006 based on Alan Wagstaff’s Three Springs concept for an educational village community. The school opened in September 2008 and can be accessed via a 22-metre (72.1 ft) bamboo bridge across the Ayung River. Initially built to cater to 90 students, it has since grown to accommodate 415 students from 30 countries. 50 bamboo buildings provide classrooms and boarding houses for the students.

The foremost priorities of the Green School are sustainability, education, conservation, community support, and nurturing its children’s individual talents. Traditional topics are combined with experiential classes, such as cooking, gardening, and even traditional Balinese mud wrestling. The children learn biology by working in the school garden and looking after the school buffalo. They study geographical topics on the river banks that flow through the school. They also learn in a classroom setting with books and paper.

The Tibetan diaspora began in 1959 after the People’s Liberation Army entered the country and the Dalai Lama fled into exile. Upon entering India, the Dalai Lama and his exiled leadership were granted 24 tracts of land scattered throughout the country on which the Tibetans would be able to reestablish themselves. These tracts of land were freely and kindly given to the Dalai Lama and his people by the Indian government led by Jawaharlal Nehru. They were granted with the assumption that the Tibetans would be in India as refugees for a very long time and would therefore need space of their own. Indeed, Nehru’s foresight was such that he even extended a citizenship policy to the Tibetans – if within 99 years they were unable to accomplish their political goals and return to their homeland, Tibetans would be forced to take up Indian citizenship and assimilate with the rest of the Indian population.

Time has shown that thus far, Nehru was almost prophetic in the arrangements he made for the Tibetan people. In the last 60 years, the Tibetan leadership have not been successful in making progress with their political goals. While China continues to rise in power and influence on a global level, the Tibetan leadership and their people continue to be racked by infighting, political scandal, manipulations, divisions and accusations of embezzlement, financial mismanagement, corruption and murder.

We can therefore see that living in exile has been very challenging for the Dalai Lama and his community. Having experienced a similar pain and hardship, the world was therefore taken aback by the apparent callousness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama when he recently issued the statement

At 3,867 metres amidst the Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site of “outstanding universal value”) on the Himalayan Mountains of Eastern Nepal, Tengboche Monastery, also known as Thyanboche Monastery or Dawa Choling Gompa, has a spectacular view of the Himalayan peaks of Tawache, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku.

Tengboche Monastery in the Khumbu district on the Nepal-Tibet border sits on a hill at the confluence of the Dudh Kosi and the Imja Khola rivers. To reach Khumbu, it is three days of hard trekking from Lukla, where the nearest airport with connection flights with Kathmandu is. Trekking at an altitude of 3,250 metres across the Dhudh Kosi river and climbing up to the Tengboche Monastery at 3,870 metres, it’s advised to trek at an easy pace to acclimatise to the conditions of high altitude. Tengboche monastery is well-placed as the mid-station of the trail to the base camp of Mount Everest and is the final destination of the organised Sacred Sites Trail Project of Sagarmatha National Park, a circular trekking trail covering ten monasteries in a clockwise direction, attracting many worldwide tourists.

Tengboche Monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist gompa of the Sherpa community, built in 1916 by Lama Gulu, in Tengboche village of Khumjung, in the Khumbu region. Sherpas, meaning Easterners, are migrants from Tibet six hundred years ago and are now the main inhabitants in the Khumbu region. Tengboche Monastery was rebuilt twice, once in 1934 after it was destroyed by an earthquake and then again in 1989 when it was ravished by a fire. The rebuilding was by local and international volunteers.

‘Shize’ is the Tibetan word for ‘appearing in a peaceful form’. In this case, the peaceful form of Dorje Shugden has one face and two arms. His right hand holds a wealth arrow which is adorned with five-coloured silks and a divination mirror. The divination mirror demonstrates that this form of Dorje Shugden can help you to see into even the distant future; Shize’s practice is very effective in helping us to receive prophecies or develop clairvoyance.

When you do Shize’s practice, you are invoking the energy of peace and accomplishing things through peaceful methods. So if you are in an area that has an epidemic, you can do Shize’s practice. If you are in an area that has many arguments and a lot of disharmony, or in a household or a place or organisation that has a lot of disharmony, then you can engage in Shize’s practice to help calm the situation down and to find peaceful resolutions.

If our mind is always jumpy, unhappy, depressed and sad, or it is always unstable, Shize’s practice is excellent for calming ourselves down and increasing our merits. His practice results in our minds becoming much happier and being alleviated from depressions.

Since the pre-Buddhist Shamanistic era, Tsagan Evgen, also known as the White Old Man, is one of the most popular deities among the Mongolians. He is regarded as the master of heaven, land, rivers, and animals. The White Old Man is also believed to be the god who bestows fertility, and longevity.

The White Old Man is a White Shamanism deity, a subdivision of Buryat Yellow Shamanism influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and adopts Buddhist rituals. After Buddhism was introduced within the Mongolian culture, the White Old Man is inducted as a Buddhist deity and known as the legendary holy hermit. Today, the White Old Man remains a popular object of worship within the Mongolian culture and beyond. The sculptures and paintings of this deity can be found in many Ulaanbaatar souvenir shops in Mongolia and other countries.

“We are building Green School to create a new paradigm for learning. We want children to cultivate physical sensibilities that will enable them to adapt and be capable in the world. We want children to develop spiritual awareness and emotional intuition and to encourage them to be in awe of life’s possibilities.” – John & Cynthia Hardy

In this essay I will be discussing how the term ‘vermin’ might be accurately or inaccurately applied contemporarily. To do this, I will primarily look at what classifies something as vermin in detail, and how the application of the term has changed over time and culture. Hopefully from here I will be able to give some grounded criteria for vermin which I will use to measure against certain animal examples in order to evaluate whether or not there is such a thing as vermin.

Contemporary views of vermin are often generalised towards animals with the certain non-desirable traits but use of the term is often leniently defined, which explains why it tends to be used interchangeably with the term ‘pest’. In Bellemore’s (2006) Tenants’ Rights Manual, ‘vermin’ refers to creatures like rats, cockroaches and lice whereas ‘pest’ refers to creatures like possum.

The manual doesn’t mention the reason behind these categorisations but as it addresses the 1987 ‘Residential Tenancies Act’ in New South Wales (Australia), it could be inferred that the creatures referred to would more than likely be influenced by the culture. Furthermore, the manual’s discussion on removing vermin uses ‘pest removal’ (presumably) as an encompassing term for both vermin and pest removal because it fails to mention any ‘vermin removal’.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Respected lamas of any devoted students will have two stupas for their remains. One stupa inside the ladrang of the lama and one stupa outside for the public to worship and do kora. By keeping the remains of the lama\'s previous lives in stupas, and making offerings, generates the merits for the current incarnation and future incarnations of the lama to be able to do more dharma work to benefit others.

Living off the grid in Australia
A Jill Redwood is a jack of all trades, Jill built her own house on her property and lives entirely off the grid with no mains power or town water, mobile reception or television. Living on around $80 a week, Jill has over sixty animals to keep her company and an abundant garden that out serves as an organic supermarket right at her doorstep. Her main expenses are animal feed and the rates on her property. Watch this incredible three minute video and be inspired to live differently.

  • If there were more schools like this, then our kids would grow up with more caring awareness and kind emotions towards our environment and the people around them. They would grow up knowing that chasing materialism is not going to bring any happiness. I hope very much more schools like this would materialise. I hope in my future life I can attend a school like this. Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
