The Wrathful Healing Form of Manjushri – Black Manjushri
Black Manjushri (Main figure)
(Top to bottom): Black Manjushri and Dorje Shugden
Deity: Black Manjushri (English)
Alternative names: Jampel Nagpo (Tibetan); Krishna Manjushri (Sanskrit)
According to the Charya and Yoga Tantras, Manjushri first emanated in this form as a retinue deity in the mandala of the Buddha Vairochana. A popular meditational deity, the practice of Black Manjushri arrived in Tibet from India through the efforts of Bari Lotsawa Rinchen Drag (1040-1112). Black Manjushri’s practice is known to be highly effective in the wrathful purification of ignorance and negative karma. His practice is also said to be highly effective against negative interferences, spirits, zombies, harmful nagas and other malevolent forces.
Deity: Dorje Shugden (Tibetan)
Alternative name: Vajra Rudra (Sanskrit)
Dorje Shugden is an emanation of the Buddha of Wisdom, Manjushri. He took the form of a Dharma protector in order to safeguard the Buddha’s teachings, especially the important teachings on the Middle Way view. Reminiscent of Manjushri’s form, Dorje Shugden carries a meandering sword and rides a snowlion that represents the fearlessness of a fully enlightened Buddha. Thus, he has great strength to overcome obstacles of the body, speech and mind, and create suitable conditions for our spiritual practice to flourish.

Rinpoche, I hope that you can help me. Many years ago my root guru, Geshe Khenrab Gajam, who lived in Montreal, now passed, assigned to me 4 armed Black Manjushri as my Yidam. He showed me a small photo, which showed the black form engulfed in flames, orange and red, with 4 arms, each carrying a tool, i.e, a sword, a book, a lotus flower, and a lassoo. I have been doing this practise now for over 40 years. But I have never been able to find any Thangka image of t4 armed Black Manjushri. Do you know if any exists? One lama I spoke to believes that it doesn’t, and that I may have mistaken it for 4 armed Mahaka, although I am certain I did not, as the Mantra and Practice is for Black Manjushri . It makes no difference to me at this point as it has been a very effective practice and a positive force in my life. Are you aware of any 4 armed Black Manjushri image?
