The 97th Head of Gelugpa Kyabje Ling Rinpoche (1903-1983)

Kyabje Ling Rinpoche, the 97th Throne Holder of Gaden and yongs’ dzin (tutor) to the 14th Dalai Lama was born in 1903 in Yabphu near Lhasa. Yabphu is a sacred site of Chakrasamvara and Vajrayogini, shaped like a double triangle. Yabphu also has a precious image of Naropa’s Vajrayogini, which is widely known. Since Ling Rinpoche had been the tutor of the 13th Dalai Lama in his previous life, his reincarnation was confirmed by the 13th Dalai Lama, and he was enthroned in Lhasa at an early age.

When he was 10, he entered Drepung Loseling and began to study the five major texts. At 13, he received novice ordination from the 13th Dalai Lama. As for the study of the five major texts, Ling Rinpoche wrote,

“The basic texts of the five major texts, as well as commentaries by Je Rinpoche, his sons-like disciples, and Panchen Sonam Drakpa were memorized. We had to understand the meaning of the root texts and their commentaries in order to discuss all of their difficult points, properly analyze and understand the different points of view of the main Indian and Tibetan masters. Thus, I carefully studied and discussed them with wise Dharma friends and gained considerable knowledge. ”

In his autobiography, Ling Rinpoche gave a long list of specific texts that have been studied and discussed during this time. First, Ling Rinpoche mentioned the study of the Prajnaparamita associated with Maitreya’s “Five Treatises” given to Asanga, supplemented by the Abhisamayalamkara. The relevant texts of Haribhadra, Jamgon Tsongkhapa, Gyaltsab Je and Panchen Sonam Drakpa were also studied. The study also included “The Eight Hidden Meanings of Prajnaparamita Which Includes Eight Categories and Seventy Topics.” He also recalled that the Gomang and Loseling colleges (both parts of Drepung) held regular debates together, in which he attended. On one occasion, he debated with Geshe Gomang Gangshing on Nagarjuna’s six logic texts of Madhyamika philosophy. According to Ling Rinpoche, these texts “established the direct meaning of emptiness as presented in the Prajnaparamita Sutra.” To study the Madhyamika texts, besides those by Nagarjuna, the additional texts by Je Tsongkhapa and Panchen Sonam Drakpa were also studied.

However, Ling Rinpoche said, “in order to adequately understand the profound views of the Madhyamika philosophy, Pramana (Valid Cognition) must also be studied.” To this end, along with other texts in the higher logic class, Dharmakirti’s text was studied. Ling Rinpoche said that Dharmakirti’s commentary on Pramana “logically proves the non-deceptive nature of the Enlightened Ones and their teachings, which leads to liberation and omniscience.”

Traditionally in Tibet, Jang was a place to study Pramana in the winter, which included long periods of debate sessions, as Ling Rinpoche said: “It was very cold in Jang, our hands were cracked, but you could hardly feel how the blood dripped, because our concentration was fully involved in the debates. ” According to Ling Rinpoche, the most important commentaries on Dharmakirti’s Pramanavartika are by Panchen Sonam Drakpa and Gyaltsab Dharma Rinchen.

Next, of the five major subjects, Vinaya, which, according to Ling Rinpoche, “teaches the way to obtain vows for those who have not yet obtained them, and how to restore when they are broken. The teachings on the three points of advice, the objections, the practices and the permissions are clearly revealed in Gunaprabha’s root and commentary texts on the Vinaya Sutra.” According to Ling Rinpoche, the additional texts by Kunkhyen Tsonawa, Gendun Drup, Panchen Sonam Drakpa are studied.

Finally, the metaphysics of the Abhidharmakosa (Treasury of Abhidharma), which was created by Vasubandhu and included seven Abhidharma texts based on the Hinaya practice, was studied. Among the commentaries studied on this topic was those written by Chim Jampel Yang and Gendun Drup.

In 1922 Ling Rinpoche took full ordination from the 13th Dalai Lama. He was instructed to begin his Geshe degree examination at age 20, an unprecedentedly young age. At age 22, he obtained the Geshe Lharampa degree. He then entered the Upper Tantric College and studied all four classes of Tantra, especially Heruka, Guhyasamaja and Yamantaka. For Guhyasamaja he relied on many texts, including Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s text on the generation and completion stage, commentaries by Chandrakirti and Jamgon Tsongkhapa, among other texts. He also studied Jamgon Tsongkhapa’s commentary on Chakrasamvara “Clarifying the Hidden Meaning”. When he was 23, he was given the first position in the tantric examinations. When he was 24, he became the disciplinarian for the Upper Tantric College for four months.

In addition to the classical Gelug education, Ling Rinpoche also received many teachings from the greatest masters of the time. At the age of 12, he received the teachings of Lamrim Chenmo from the 13th Dalai Lama and his initiation into the Solitary Hero Yamantaka and Vajrayogini from Je Pabongka Rinpoche. Ling Rinpoche wrote about his teachers after graduating from the Upper Tantric College,

“Among my teachers at this time was Je Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, a manifestation of the glorious Chakrasamvara (Pal Khor Dompa). My other teachers were the great Kyabgon Yongzin Sikyong Tradag Dorje Chang, Kyabje Yongzin Trijang Dorje Chang, Kyabje Khangsar Dorje Chang, Chone Lama Rinpoche Losang Gyaltsen Palzangpo and others. In short, I studied with thirty scholars and practitioners. Their kindness cannot be repaid even by keeping them on my head for countless lifetimes. ”

When he was 28 years old, he went to southern Tibet, gave teachings and visited many places of pilgrimage. When the 13th Dalai Lama passed away, he participated in the creation of a golden stupa for his relics. Then at the age of 34, he was appointed abbot of the Upper Tantric College. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed mtshan zhabs (assistant tutor) of the 14th Dalai Lama. In 1941, he was appointed junior yongs’ dzin to the Dalai Lama, and in 1949 he became Sharpa Choeje. In 1953, he became the senior yongs dzin of the Dalai Lama and gave him the teachings on Lamrim and the tantric teachings of Heruka, Guhyasamaja and Yamantaka. In 1954, he gave the full ordination to the Dalai Lama during the Great Prayer Festival.

In 1954, he visited China with the Dalai Lama, after which they visited Kumbum Jampa Ling in Amdo. In 1956, on the 2500th anniversary of Buddha’s Parinirvana, he visited Bodhgaya and other pilgrimage sites in India with the Dalai Lama. After returning to Tibet, he gave many teachings on Tantra, including on the generation and completion stages of Vajrabhairava and Guhyasamaja. In 1959, after the Chinese occupation of Tibet, he fled to India.

In 1960, upon the death of the previous Throne Holder of Gaden (Head of the Gelugpa) in Tibet, Ling Rinpoche was appointed the 97th Throne Holder of Gaden. He ascended to the throne in the Gaden Phelgye Ling monastery. He visited Switzerland and England and gave many teachings. In 1969, he gave a teaching on Lamrim Chenmo at the request of Guru Deva Rinpoche at the Gaden Phelgye Ling Monastery. In 1972, he visited the three monasteries of Sera, Ganden and Drepung in Southern India and gave many teachings. He continued to turn the wheel of Dharma until his passing in 1983. In the conclusion of his autobiography, Ling Rinpoche stated,

“Until now, I have dedicated my stay in India to the service of restoring the waning doctrine of the Buddha and the teachings of the Second Buddha (Jamgon Tsongkhapa), the stainless views of both the Sutra and Tantra, which are like pure gold.”

Assam environmental activist and forestry worker Jadav Payeng known as ‘Forest Man of India’ did something extraoridinary where no one did before. Wow ….imagine he had shot to fame by singlehandedly transforming the world’s largest inhabited river island into a sprawling forest. He had devoted 30 years of his life planting trees to creating a real man-made forest of 550 hectares of tress. Unbelievable with this reforestation, wildlife has returned to the area. His inspiring story has taught us to be responsible and with determination can bring a change in the world. Jadav Payeng was conferred the title ‘The Forest Man’ in Delhi by the Government of India on World Earth Day. Since then he has travelled across the country, and the world, giving talks and attending conferences on climate change and environmental issues.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring sharing.

For 400 years , many highly attained Lamas, thousands of disciples, monks, nuns have been practicing Dorje Shugden. They cannot be wrong. The practice of Dorje Shugden had been passed down from lineage to lineage till now.
Every one should be respected one another even though they are from different religions and faith. Everyone should be given religious freedom to choose what they believe and pray . Its their choice after all. The Tibetan Leardership (CTA) should not discriminate anyone just base on their religion. The Dorje Shugden ‘s controversy has been going for over two decades, believing that Dorje Shugden is an evil and will harm Dalai Lama . Reading this article perhaps we will know the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing, may more and more people read or view the video to understand better.

Interesting story of how the Indian 10th Century master Lalitavajra who was the first to reveal the Yamantaka Tantra. Yamantaka is a Tantric Buddhist deity most commonly found as a secondary figure in a mandala configuration . And also is the manifestation of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Stainless Wisdom. Yamantaka overcome our anger and hatred as a means to purify all delusions. Wow…very powerful indeed , it purify extreme negative karma .
Together with Ra Lotsawa Dorje Drakpa who is one of the previous lives of Dorje Shugden and Dorje Shugden who is an emanation of the Buddha of Wisdom, Manjushri as depicted in this beautiful thangka forms a very powerful thangka to have it in our home.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Beautiful thangka of Lama Tsongkhapa sitting on an elephant together with Dorje Shugden forms a powerful thangka . After Lama Tsongkhapa entered clear light, Khedrub Je requested for guidance and inspiration. Lama Tsongkhapa had apparently appeared in five visions directly to Khedrub Je. Lama Tsongkhapa had then encourage Khedrub Je to continue spreading Kadam Dharma through his teachings. Eventually became his successor in upholding the legacy of his teachings and lineage with Gyaltsab Je.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing, a beautiful thangka to have.

Thank you Rinpoche and Datuk May for sharing this article. Reading this post again , all I could say is disgusting to know what were said without further investigation and thoughts if its true. Since the banning of Dorje Shugden practice, many non-practitioners and practitioners had suffered abuse, slander, threats and discrimination by those anti Dorje Shugden practitioners. Sad….. Just because one dislike one’s religion , the other suffered. They even to that extend encouraging their people to attack Shugden practitioners. One such example where an 84-year-old monk of Trijang Ladrang was brutally attacked, allegedly just because he practices Dorje Shugden. Discriminate people base on their religion is definitely against religious freedom and democracy.
Rinpoche have done so much to benefit so many people through his teachings ,advices and so forth. Yet those people out there still threatened Rinpoche without verify the truth.

Thank you Pastor Niral for this wonderful sharing. It is very easy for most of us to take things for granted. Many years back when technology was not so advance, everything has to be done manually that require great amount of time, patient and effort to gain knowledge. People those days has sacrificed a lot in order to preserve the dharma teaching. And today Rinpoche has made it easily accessible for us to obtain the knowledge from the ‘virtual temple’ with just a few clicks away plus it’s free. Indeed very grateful to Rinpoche for all the effort done in preserving and teaching dharma, and reaching to all the countries via the virtual world. A reminder to continue to practise dharma and appreciate all effort for spreading dharma.

Despite all of the darkness, there is always a light and hope for us to walk through however far we will make it. Let the light of hope always enlighten our soul. We are all like ocean, spreading thousands of miles away and there is just one lighthouse, the only lighthouse. We are the fortunate ones who get to see it. The light will always conquer the darkness. Seeing the light in the darkness is after we stepped outside our comfort zone that we begin to change, grow, and transforming.
Thank you Rinpoche for showing us the way.

The practice of sati was at its peak between the 15th and 18th centuries. Widows were forced burning alive or commit suicide after the death of their husband . Sati was a historical Hindu practice then, was banned as the practice of Sati is against human rights and revolting the feelings of human nature. Since then widows needs to be in a constant state of mourning once her husband dies, wearing in white .
Many communities in India still shun widows and they are abandoned by their families due to superstition. It’s sad to know that those widows been treated in such a way.
Thanks to one great humanist and social reformer of contemporary India….. Dr. Pathak who has worked to change social attitudes towards the widows . Dr. Pathak is known around the world for his wide ranging work in the sanitation field to improve public health, advance social progress, and improve human rights in India and other countries. He is also the founder of Sulabh International, an India-based social service organisation which works to promote human rights. He goes out his way to help these neglected women, trying to change the mindset, attitude and behaviour of the people towards those widows.
Inspiring his accomplishments span the fields of sanitation technology, healthcare education for millions of people in the rural areas and slums in India.A prolific writer and speaker as well, Dr. Pathak has authored several books to date.
Thank you Rinpoche ,Vinnie and Beatrice for this sharing.

Kyabje Chatral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche is one of the most accomplished Tibetan Buddhist yogis of our time. Regarded as one of the most highly realized Dzogchen yogis ,he lived in a simple dwelling without the distractions of fame and fortune. He practices what he preaches without compromise and as a result he is beloved and respected by people of all faiths. Spending a great deal most of his time practicing in caves . Thousands of people in the Himalayan region consider Rinpoche to be their root guru because through his compassionate action and profound wisdom. During his life Chatral Rinpoche was one of the most vocal opponents of meat eating in Tibetan Buddhism. He encouraged followers to go on vegetarian. For many years he had been buying fish in huge bulk from numerous fisheries and fish markets and released them into Diamond Harbour in Kolkota’s estuaries. He founded and restored many meditation retreat centers in Bhutan, India and Nepal as well as overseen the construction of several stupas. Inspiring indeed. He left a legacy that will undoubtedly live on for many generations.

Beautiful story of how Choyang Dulzin Kuten Lama from a humble nomadic family, became an Oracle Lama. He had served Tibetan community in difficult times in Tibet and in refugee camps in India. He was well respected and illustrious oracle who took trance of Dorje Shugden. Choyang Duldzin Kuten Lama had contributed in various ways when the Tibetan community was trying to re-establish itself in India. It was Choyang Duldzin Kuten Lama who invoked Dharmapala Dorje Shugden to ask for safe directions in H H the 14th Dalai Lama’s escape during the Chinese invasion at that time. Interesting read . His life story is one positive and inspiring example of compassion that benefit many and to those having special relationships with Dorje Shugden.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring and interesting read.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

Billions of terrestrial animals die annually. Billions. You can’t even imagine it. And all that because people don’t want to give up meat, even though there are so many alternatives. ~ Gabriel Azimov

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
