Drupon Khen Rinpoche in Africa | 主奔堪仁波切的非洲之行

DKR1

Dear friends around the world,

I wish to share with you on the amazing Drupon Khen Rinpoche and his effort in spreading Lord Buddha’s teachings in Africa. Africa is the second largest continent after Asia, covering about one-fifth of the total land surface of Mother Earth with a staggering population of 1.3 billion in 2019. With such a big population, many of them are still living in poverty and their living conditions are not the best. Furthermore, not many lamas go to Africa to spread Dharma.

Drupon Khen Rinpoche’s first visit to Africa was on August 2017 when he flew to South Africa and teach at Tara Rokpa Centre in Groot Marico and Samye Ling in Harare, Zimbabwe. The trip lasted for about 2 weeks and Rinpoche generously sponsored meals for 150 locals on his last day in Groot Marico, as a session to know them better. Drupon Rinpoche’s subsequent visit to the African soil was in 2018.

In 2019, he will be giving teachings in 5 Buddhist centers, a significant increase compared to the last 2 visits he made to Africa.

It touched me deeply to see Buddha Dharma arriving in Africa, may Buddha’s teaching flourish in this continent to benefit many more people. I myself have always wanted to go to Africa also in the past to bring Dharma but didn’t have the chance to. So I am happy to see this development. I have no connections to Drupon Khen Rinpoche nor have I ever met him. I obtained the pictures and information from the internet. I am simply sharing how happy I am to see a Buddhist teacher share the Dharma in Africa. It brought tears to my eyes. Most lamas never visit developing countries to share the Dharma but only to affluent countries, that is why this touches me deeply.

Below is a short article about Drupon Khen Rinpoche’s trips in Africa with pictures and videos. I pray that Drupon Khen Rinpoche will be able to make the Dharma grow in Africa. I pray Lord Shakyamuni Buddha, Tara and Guru Rinpoche will bless the works there and it will grow. May the beautiful people of Africa be blessed with meeting the Dharma.

Biography of Drupon Khen Rinpoche

DKR3
Drupon Khen Rinpoche is a lama from the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Rinpoche was trained from an early age under the direction of highly accomplished masters of Mahamudra and Dzogchen. His list of lamas comprised of famous and unknown yogis of all lineages, especially from Kagyu and Nyingma. Rinpoche started to learn rituals and procedures for many Vajrayana practice when he was seven years old. At fourteen, Rinpoche went to Khenpo Palga and received novice ordination.

By the time he was seventeen, he already had a deep renunciation for the mundane everyday activities and decided to enter into a retreat. During this time, he received teachings from the retreat master, Drupon Rinpoche Karma Sherab, and from Lama Senge. Lama Senge often met with Rinpoche to answer his questions and offer him advice. Rinpoche was able to have full understanding on the topic of meditation and the mind, making Lama Senge his root guru.

After Drupon Rinpoche Karma Sherab and Lama Senge had passed into nirvana, Rinpoche went on to receive teachings from several high lamas such as the revered Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche, Khenpo Munsel, Khenpo Pentse, Adzom Drukpa Rinpoche, and more. After receiving such wealth of teachings, Rinpoche, then left to reside at Thrangu Vajra Vidya Institute in Varanasi. At Thrangu Vajra Vidya, he gave teachings to the shedra students and was appointed as the retreat master for Thrangu Sekhar Retreat center near Bhaktapur, Nepal by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche. He also taught at Thrangu Monastery Shedra (a Buddhist college) and Thrangu Tara Abbey (a nunnery).

Later, Rinpoche was invited to Kagyu Samye Ling monastery in the UK at Lama Katen’s suggestion. Akong Rinpoche and Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche requested Rinpoche to devise and teach a part-time shedra course at the monastery and to be the retreat master for the retreat centers on the Isle of Arran and Holy Isle. To date, Rinpoche continues to guide the retreats and give teachings in Samye Ling annually.

Rinpoche’s Visit to Africa

DKR2

Rinpoche’s first trip to Africa came about due to the sincere wishes and invitations of many who attend and practice at the centers there. Finally, on 30th August 2017, Drupon Khen Rinpoche arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa for the first time. It was a one-week meditation and teaching retreat at Tara Rokpa Centre in Groot Marico. On the morning of the last day, Rinpoche invited over 150 locals to lunch so he could get to know more of them.

After the meal, Rinpoche boarded a flight to Harare, Zimbabwe. Upon arrival, Rinpoche was received by members of the Samye Ling related centers in Harare and two renowned spirit mediums, Sekuru Motota and Sekuru Shumba, who are highly revered holy men in the local community. During Rinpoche’s visit, he was invited for lunch in Sekuru Shumba’s village where he witnessed the life of rural Africans.

DKR16

On the 10th of December, 2018, Rinpoche landed on African soil again. This time, he went to Lubumbashi in The Democratic Republic of the Congo. The primary purpose of the visit was to get the feel of the locals and their situation. During this visit, Rinpoche gave refuge and refuge vows to 215 people, it was an occasion full of joy and enthusiasm.

Four days after the event, Rinpoche travelled to Zimbabwe with Lama Katen where he visited the region and people of Chikukwa in a remote area right on the border of Mozambique. Here, Rinpoche engaged in a fascinating cultural dialogue with the region’s elders and spirit mediums. The dialogue lasted for two days before Rinpoche returned to Harare and taught for one and a half days in Samye Ling Harare.

Rinpoche has scheduled teachings from 25th October to 3rd November, 2019 in a total of 5 different Buddhist centers in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Five Chosen for Trial from Africa

DKR6

During the time of Dharma King Trisong Detsen, seven Tibetans were chosen to be the Seven Chosen for Trial to go forth as monastics to assess whether Tibetans were fit to uphold the precepts. Eventually, they went on to become translators whose work benefited many people by making the teachings available to them. Drupon Khen Rinpoche has chosen five African children to undergo his training and nurturing in the hope that they will become wonderful propagators of Buddhism in their homeland just like The Seven Chosen for Trial.

Drunpon Khen Rinpoche has said that these children will be a central part of his primary purpose for this current life. He hopes to be able to groom and nurture these children into brave, caring, and wise men and women who can spread the philosophy of peace and non-violence in their own country in the future.

Drupon Khen Rinpoche feels most Tibetan lamas have focused on developed and affluent countries, neglecting developing countries such as those in Africa, therefore, he wishes more Tibetan lamas will start to focus on spreading Dharma in the developing countries of Africa.

Dharma is spreading and flourishing around the world, that’s wonderful. Especially to countries such as Africa, we have Drupon Khen Rinpoche Karma Lhabu to thanks. Africa is a massive continent with diverse religious traditions, it’s a up hill task teaching Buddhism . Buddhism is a quiet new religion in South Africa, most Lamas would prefer going to Asian or European countries to spread Dharma teachings.
Drupon Khen Rinpoche Karma Lhabu is a monastic teacher in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. While in Tibet he received extensive training in Dharma and Meditation. He studied under many accomplished masters of mahamudra and dzogchen. All from Kagyu and Nyingma lineages whom are famous lamas and unknown yogis . He travelled all the way to Africa to spread Dharma and working tirelessly , going to remote parts of Africa . Truly compassionate of him.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Thank you, Rinpoche and blog team for sharing this good news. Africa is the second largest continent in the world but Buddhism is not popular there. If Buddhism is able to take root in Africa, a lot people will be able to connect to Buddha Dharma and be benefitted from the supreme teachings of Lord Buddha.

Africans are generally spiritual people due to their culture and also living conditions which made them to rely on spirituality and outer divine beings to continue to have hope in their difficult life. Life in Africa is not a stroll in the park and often times, people have to rely on an outer source to have the strength to continue with their life.

Drupon Khen Rinpoche is a very compassionate lama as he is willing to travel to the foreign country to spread Buddha’s teaching despite of all the difficulties. From his trip in Africa, we can see that he is willing to work hard to maximise his time with the community and give as much teachings as possible. May Drupon Khen Rinpoche’s endeavours in Africa flourished and have maximum benefit on the people there.

  4. Samfoonheei on Jun 9, 2019 at 11:58 am

Buddhism, as a major world religion, is practiced in many part of the world except few in Africa. Africans were aware of Buddhism yet today Africa is the least Buddhist of the inhabited continents. Drunpon Khen Rinpoche realized that while there were religious and cultural Tibetan Buddhist organizations all around the world. Inspired by the Buddhist teachings, he decided to dedicate himself fully to spiritual life against the odds in Africa. In the early years he has to face many challenges. His first visit to Africa was in 2017 followed by more subsequent visits to spread Buddhism. By 2019 he visited few center than sharing Dharma in Africa.
May Drunpon Khen Rinpoche continue to guide them and give Lord Buddha’s teachings to more people in Arica.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring sharing.

  5. Yee Yin on May 29, 2019 at 12:43 am

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this heartwarming news with us. Traditionally, Buddhism is not a very common faith in Africa. It started in Asia and had spread across Asia, and the Middle East in the early days. Later, Buddhism was brought to western countries. Africa is one continent that Dharma hardly reaches.

What Rinpoche said is very true. Most of the Buddhist teachers go to countries in Asia or developed countries to spread Dharma, not many go to Africa. Actually, African people also need Dharma badly. In general, Africa is still a very poor continent, there are many internal wars and fights, many people are starving due to famine. Material help can only solve their problems for the short term. However, with Dharma knowledge, it will help them to get through the difficult period and give them hopes.

Drupon Khen Rinpoche is very compassionate and he is sincere to help the Africans. He made trips to the villages so he could understand their culture and custom and it will help him to impart Dharma in them. Buddhism can be accepted easily by the locals because they are not asked to forego their traditions and custom, they can still maintain it and at the same time practice Dharma.

    This is amazing, Rinpoche!

It’s extremely heart warming to see Dharma is spreading around the world & people are interested & have faith (Friends from Africa are chanting praises to 21 Taras:O).

It’s scary if the world has degenerate until there is no Dharma.

May more & more people who are with pure hearts can share the teachings of Buddha to many people.

Thank you very much for sharing, Rinpoche?

I wish His Eminence Drupon Khen Rinpoche success in nurturing and training the Five Chosen For Trial. It takes time for Dharma to take root in a new environment and it depends very much on training indigenous people who will in turn nurture and train others in the local community and from there the Dharma will spread. My best wishes to Rinpoche in all his endeavours.

The Heart Sutra teaches emptiness through the epitome of compassion. It is often said that, the heart of emptiness is compassion. It’s an attribute by which we sees the suffering of another and experiences true empathy for them. This empathy, in turn, leads the person to reach out and share in the person’s suffering. By helping them to endure whatever they are going through regardless of race and religion. Our prime purpose in this life is to help and benefit others. Well if we can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them. Treat others as we would like others to treat us. Always wish upon others and showing kindness to those who are feeling sad or upset to help them feel better. Lend a shoulder to them to lean on. Emptiness can be explored through meditation and contemplation. By observing the impermanence and interdependence of all things, we can gradually come to understand the true nature of reality. We have to understand the actual words of the Heart Sutra and its meaning within the Buddhist tradition as well as the meanings of emptiness. Will revisit this blog to read, learn more .
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound teachings.

The concept of Dharma is considered to be accessible and applicable to everyone, regardless of their religious background. Dharma, in its essence, is about understanding and living in accordance with universal principles of righteousness and ethical conduct. The core of the doctrine of dharma, especially in Buddhism, is about understanding the nature of suffering, the cause of suffering, the possibility of ending suffering, and the path to liberation through ethical conduct, mindfulness, and wisdom. Dharma is the essential teachings to transform our mind towards that of an enlightened being. Learning and putting what we learn into practice helped us to become a better person. Dharma is for everyone, reading those stories as in the blog give us a clear understanding. Nor matter what religion we are , we are taught to be loving, compassion and living peacefully.
Thank you Rinpoche for these great teachings.

Generosity is giving more than we can, and pride is taking less than we need. Giving is an action; generosity is a matter of the heart. Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present. Sharing one’s resources and helping others in need. We have not lived today until we have done something for someone who can never repay you. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.

n Buddhism, Dharma refers to the teachings of the Buddha and the true nature of reality. It also encompasses principles like the Eightfold Path, which guides individuals towards enlightenment and liberation from suffering. A Dharma attitude involves fulfilling one’s responsibilities and duties towards oneself, others, and the environment. Dharma work helps us to focus on benefiting others instead of ourselves. Each one of us has different ideas, approaches and methods to do dharma work. As long as its benefits others and
taking responsibility for our own actions transforming others with love and generosity. It is important to embrace our imperfections as embracing puts us on a better path of acceptance and self-discovery.

Buddhism is one of the most ancient belief systems and is practiced today by nearly 350 million people around the world.
Bettany Mary Hughes is an English historian, author, and broadcaster, specialising in classical history. Bettany Hughes travelled to the seven wonders of the Buddhist world. Where she documented a unique insight into the seven wonders that explained the long and rich history of Buddhism 2500 years ago . Truly fascinating documentary that’s one should watch. Started off her journey with Bodh Gaya in India, the Bodanath Stupa in Nepal, the Temple of The Tooth in Sri Lanka, Wat Pho Temple in Thailand, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Giant Buddha in Hong Kong and the Hsi Lai Temple in the United States. At each location, she meets with Buddhist scholars who explain the different concepts that form the core of Buddhist philosophy, giving insight into the long and rich history of Buddhism. Interesting sharing.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

Religious discrimination remains a significant issue globally, impacting various aspects of life. The Dorje Shugden controversy in Tibetan Buddhism involves accusations of religious discrimination against devotees of the Poweful Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden was a powerful Protector associated with the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. H H the Dalai Lama previously practice Dorje Shugden’s practice but somehow later discouraged the practice, citing concerns about sectarianism ,its perceived role as a spirit. Dorje Shugden’s practitioners have reported feeling ostracized and discriminated against by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and those supporting the Dalai Lama. The controversy has divided the Tibetan community and has been a source of contention and tension. CTA had breached the rights of every Dorje Shugden practitioners to what they pray . Many families are torn apart by this. Dorje Shugden people had to break away from their monasteries .Religious freedom and human rights are interconnected. Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion regardless of race and faith. Religious freedom is one of the most fundamental of human rights. The discrimination that Dorje Shugden practitioners are experiencing today has similarities to other historic bigotry and prejudices such example was the African American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s,and the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Racism affects virtually every country in the world. It denies people their full human rights just because of their colour, race, ethnicity, descent or national origin. The most prevalent discrimination that we see today are national origin and race discrimination. May there be peace, unity, harmony and based on compassion, acceptance and universal freedom of religious choice without discrimination or recriminations of any kind.

The Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala, India is said to be thousands of years old, built in the Dravidian style, and houses more secrets than most people can ever dream of. That’s interesting. This temple is a legendary secret chamber that has remained unopened for centuries. Legends and local beliefs it is protected by powerful deities and a curse. The door is said to be sealed with a mystical spell, and it is believed that anyone attempting to open it without proper rituals will face grave consequences, having met with mysterious deaths or terrible misfortune. Locals had warns that attempting to open Vault B without proper rituals and respect for the deities could unleash untold calamities and misfortune. Stories abound of previous attempts to open the vault had failed that resulted in terrifying visions and other supernatural occurrences, and tragic fates for those involved. Some believe that the vault contained ancient treasures , wealth and divine relics . Previously temple workers reportedly tried to force open the door, resulting in the terrifying experiences described in legends. It’s not just a place of worship but also a vault of mysteries. Modern attempts using technology have also failed to open the door, as if some force is protecting it. Every attempt to open Vault B has failed. The door remains closed, and no one know of the contents within, whether wealth, divine relics, or something else entirely, are unknown to the world . No one dare to try opening it since at least the 1880s recording to reports. Interesting article .

Revisit this interesting truth where not many people knew the actual story behind . With great effort and research finally the story unfolded. In Tibet, Oracles play, an important part in principal roles assisting governmental decision-making and providing intelligence revelation, religion, doctrine, and prophecy. To this day the Tibetan government still believe and rely in Nechung Oracle. When Nechung oracle took trance, it is actually spirit Nyatrul who has causes problems and misprophecies. Nechung is bound by oath to protect the Dharma. Nechung prophecies are unreliable, most probably given by Nyatrul spirit to the Tibetan government. Such as wrong medication given to the 13 th Dalai Lama as prescribed by the Nechung Oracle. Another misprophecies was during the British invasion. If it was really Nechung who took trance of the Oracle, these types of misprophecies would not have happen. As mentioned in the 6th Dalai Lama biography, we cannot trust or rely on Nechung’s prophecies. It was said that Nyatrul not Nechung who created the problems and harm to Dorje Shugden . It must have told HH the Dalai Lama to ban Dorje Shugden .
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Jean Ai for this interesting article.

In Tibetan Buddhism, water offerings, particularly the seven or eight bowls offering, are a common practice used to express gratitude, cultivate merit, and purify the mind. The seven bowls represent essential aspects of offerings and can be offered daily, along with other items like flowers, incense, and lamps. Water offerings are probably the most common offering made in Tibetan Buddhism. Offering any item of value to the three jewels is the antidote to greed and attachment and helps to cultivate generosity. It is a powerful practice that can help us develop positive qualities such as generosity, devotion, and selflessness. By making water offering, we are creating good karma for ourselves and all sentient beings in the future. Great explanations and teachings all about water offerings.

H.H. Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche (1878–1941), also known as Dechen Nyingpo Jampa Tenzin Trinlay Gyatso, was one of the great lamas of the twentieth century. was a highly influential teacher in Tibet and a prominent lama in the 20th century. He was the root guru of the present Dalai Lama’s tutors and many other Tibetan lamas who brought the Dharma to the West. His teachings, particularly his book “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand,” are significant in the Gelugpa tradition until this days.He was the root guru of the present Dalai Lama’s tutors, Kyabje Ling Rinpoche and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, and a teacher to many other Gelug lamas who fled Tibet. He had brought the Dharma to the West after 1959. His teachings covered various aspects of the Tibetan Buddhist path, including the seven-point mind training and the stages of the path to enlightenment. Rinpoche’s teachings are so famous that thousands of people would come from far and wide to attend. He was an extraordinary master for the Heruka Body Mandala and the Vajrayogini practice. Wow ……one of the many famous stories been told of how Heruka actually appeared to Pabongka when he visited Cimburi in Tibet and how Heruka image spoke to him. Interesting biography of a great master of all times.

The practice of Sangha in Buddhism involves building and cultivating a supportive community of practitioners who engage in shared spiritual practice, often focusing on mindfulness and concentration. This community provides mutual support, guidance, and encouragement on the path of self-discovery. The Sangha is not just a gathering of people; it’s a collective energy of mindfulness and compassion that benefits all members. It provides a supportive environment for individuals on their spiritual journey, offering guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. Sharing experiences and insights within the Sangha can accelerate the learning process.

Wat Rong Khun better known as the White Temple, is a Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai province, Thailand. The gold symbolizes how people focus on worldly desires and money. The white building represents the idea to make merit and to focus on the mind. It is owned by a succesful Thai businessman who opened it to visitors in 1997. Awesome….This temple stands out through the white colour and use of pieces of glass that sparkle in the sun. The white colour signifies the purity of Buddha while the glass symbolizes Buddha’s wisdom. Located 3 hour drive from Chiang Mai built to honour and pay tribute to sacred Buddhist figures. Over time, temples grew in prominence and is one of the famous temples to visit in Thailand. I have visited years back its simple stunning temple which truly love the design and architecture .

Sak Yant, a traditional Thai tattooing practice, involves sacred geometrical and animal designs. Its often accompanied by Pali phrases, and is believed to offer power, protection, charisma, and other benefits to the wearer. Sak Yant tattoos are deeply rooted in Buddhist and spiritual beliefs, with each design and symbol carrying specific meanings and purported powers. Many designs are believed to provide protection against evil spirits, misfortune, and danger. Sak Yant tattoos are traditionally applied by monks or masters using a needle and ink, and the process is often accompanied by chants and blessings. I personally have not seen one yet . Sound interesting.

Jojo Struys is a travel and wellness personality, accredited yoga instructor, speaker and author. She visited Bangsar of Kechara outlet for a feature with Star Property. With her visit hopefully more people will get to know more of our Kechara . She had made a video with and Pastor David Lai all about Buddhist Arts. She openly admitted interested in Buddhist art . Buddhist art pieces have given her home a contemporary edge. Art was important to Buddhist religious life. It was not only part of ritual and worship but also served to transmit religious ideas, and artistic styles between cultures. Do agree with her statement ,…..if you want to change your life, change the way you think, because everything begins with you.”

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

I care about these two doggies of mine very much and I enjoy seeing them happy. They are with me always. Tsem Rinpoche Always be kind to animals and eat vegetarian- https://bit.ly/2Psp8h2

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. 8 years ago
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
