It is no secret that we humans are slowly killing the planet. We consume too much, recycle too little, create too much waste, and produce way too many carbon emissions. Science and common sense both tell us that unless something drastic is done, we may soon reach a point of no return.

But is it possible to save the planet and enjoy life? There are clever people who think that it is. As global consumption continues to spiral out of control, there exists a group of extraordinary humans who have taken up the mantle to try and save us all. Motivated by the wish to heal our planet, they have applied their brains and creativity to figure out a way we can maintain our quality of life and our daily routines cheaply, easily and without much disruption. Thanks to their efforts, environmental consciousness is now at an all-time high.

In 2014, nearly 4,000 school children from Los Angeles, USA participated in a beach cleanup at Dockweiler State Beach, during the Kids Ocean Day. Not only did they clean up the sand beach, but they also participated in a human-lettered sign on the sand that read "Clean Me Up", to raise awareness about the need to protect our oceans and beaches.

Not only did they clean up the sand beach, but they also participated in a human-lettered sign on the sand that read “Clean Me Up”, to raise awareness about the need to protect our oceans and beaches.

These days, every aspect of our lives is scrutinised. Our food is measured not only nutritionally but judged based on its carbon footprint and food miles, while the mantra “Eat local” rings in our ears. Companies are producing an ever-widening range of daily care products that take care of you, and the environment too. Local authorities are implementing recycling schemes; nationally, governments are imposing environmentally-related taxes. And all the while, technology is being invented to help clean up the mess we have made.

So you know how you used to tease your grandmother for saving shopping bags to reuse over and over again? Or how you would give her a little side-eye because she washed out ice-cream containers and biscuit tins to reuse for storing food? Well, it turns out grandma had the right message all along because being green is the new in. Below are just some of the multitude of ways people are trying to help us live healthier, better and more environmentally-friendly lives. In Buddhism, we talk about reducing the harm we cause to others through the three doors: our body, speech and mind. I hope that reading about these initiatives, it will inspire you to think of new and varied ways to live your lives with less harm to the world around you. And can you think of anything else that people around the world are doing to save our planet? Share your ideas and news in the comments section below!

Drifting float system (sea booms)

savetheworld002

The drifting float system in action

What is better than cleaning up the ocean? The ocean cleaning up itself! This invention was thought up by probably the youngest person on our list – a Dutch teenager, Boyan Slat, was 16 years old when he was holidaying in Greece and came across more plastic than fish while he was diving. Disturbed by what he observed, he became determined to resolve the problem and at the age of 18, he established The Ocean Cleanup, a foundation dedicated to cleaning up debris from the world’s oceans.

Boyan Slat’s idea centres around the creation of a passive system that utilises circulating ocean currents to drive plastic debris into a floatation system. One to two kilometres long, these floatation systems are composed of a floating pipe which traps debris on the surface, as well as a solid screen underneath to catch and concentrate debris not directly on the surface.

Or view the video on the server at:
https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/OceanCleanup.mp4

Because the system relies on the ocean currents, it does not require an external energy source to drive rubbish into the boom, nor does it require additional energy to move the floatation devices to areas with the highest concentration of debris. Working off of the ocean current, these U-shaped systems will naturally drift into areas where the world’s ocean currents congregate (known as gyres). This also happens to be the places where plastic naturally accumulates; the booms will concentrate the plastic debris before it can be extracted by support vessels for transportation back to shore, for proper disposal.

The Seabin

savetheworld003

The Seabin is a rubbish bin that can be submerged in the water in harbours and marinas to trap debris and rubbish.

The Seabin was invented by two Australian surfers who, as frequent beachgoers, noticed that the beaches and marinas were degenerating. Putting their knowledge of the ocean into good use, they created the Seabin which is a floating rubbish bin that collects rubbish, plastic and oil from the sea.

The device can be dropped at any harbour, port, marina or yacht club and thanks to a land-based pump which creates a flow of water, rubbish and debris are drawn into the bin. The rubbish is collected in a natural fibre catch bag and when it is full, the bag is lifted out of the ocean. The rubbish is then discarded properly, for example by recycling what can be recycled. The emptied Seabin is then returned into the ocean, to continue its cleaning duties.

Mr. Trash Wheel

Officially known as the Inner Harbor Water Wheel, this large machine has been dropped into the Baltimore Harbor (in the USA) where water power and solar power are used to run a water wheel. This, in turns, powers a conveyor belt. Rotating forks that dip into and out of the water pick up the trash and place it onto a conveyor belt, and everything is collected in a dumpster.

Mr. Trash Wheel was invented by John Kellett and since its launch in 2008, its initial design has been improved to incorporate a bigger dumpster and the ability to pick up larger matter. It has also been joined by two more similarly-powered trash wheels in an effort to clean up the harbour.

Reusable straws

savetheworld005

Reusable straws come in many shapes, colours and materials. They aim to end the world’s reliance on single-use straws.

If you did not see the 2015 video of a turtle crying and bleeding profusely as a plastic straw is pulled out of its nostril, you must have been one of a very small handful of people. Three years later, in 2018, the turtle video was followed by that of a pilot whale which was found barely alive in a Thai canal. Despite numerous attempts to rescue and nurse the whale back to health, it died. During its autopsy, it was found to have ingested piles of plastic bags and trash. Marine biologists concluded that not only had the whale choked to death but it had also starved, eating up to 8 kilograms (18 pounds) of indigestible, poisonous and nutritionally-void plastic thinking it was jellyfish.

Some of the 80 plastic bags found in the pilot whale's stomach. During the unsuccessful rescue attempts, the whale vomited up five bags before it finally died.

Some of the 80 plastic bags found in the pilot whale’s stomach. During the unsuccessful rescue attempts, the whale vomited up five bags before it finally died.

Videos like these took the Internet by storm and the footage was met with near-universal revulsion for our plastic dependence. Although the videos made for difficult viewing, it is thanks to videos like this that more and more people are giving up single-use plastic items. Shops in Malaysia for example, now charge 20sen (about US$0.05) for a plastic bag, hoping to encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable ones.

In more recent times, there has been a movement to get rid of one of the biggest single-use culprits: plastic straws. Many people are now replacing these with alternatives made from stainless steel, vulcanized rubber, pasta and even the ubiquitous water spinach a.k.a. kang kong! The growing consciousness around the evils of single-use plastic has even motivated big corporations to get in on the action. In 2018, in a widely-celebrated move, Starbucks announced that by 2020, they would no longer be providing plastic straws in any of their outlets globally.

Or view the video on the server at:
https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/SeaTurtle.mp4

It truly is a sign of the times for this move would not have been possible just a few years ago, when Starbucks would have been wary about losing customers and upsetting investors. There is a lot of hope that with Starbucks proving it is possible to get rid of straws, that more and more global companies will follow suit. McDonald’s UK, American Airlines and Marriott Hotels have already taken similar steps…Burger King, Subway and Wendy’s, we are lookin’ at you!

Compostable crockery and cutlery

savetheworld006

While bamboo crockery and cutlery have been on the market for years, a few innovative products have stood out in more recent times. Nowadays, some very interesting alternative-to-plastic crockery and cutlery are popping up in the stores, making it easier than ever for us to ditch our plastic habit.

About two years ago, news about an innovative Indian company called Bakeys began to make its rounds on the Internet. It featured a man by the name of Narayana Peesapaty who was producing millet forks and spoons in India, to simultaneously combat poor nutrition and plastic pollution.

Every year, 120 billion plastic utensils are discarded in India alone, creating a huge problem in terms of pollution. Peesapaty’s millet cutlery is intended to be a nutritionally-dense replacement for single-use plastic cutlery that is also environmentally-friendly because the user can consume the cutlery once they are done with it. Not only is millet a crop native to India (meaning it will not invade its ecosystem and overtake native plants), but the main advantage of millet is that it is a water-conservative crop compared to, for example, rice which is a water-intensive crop that requires 60 times more water than millet to cultivate. In many areas of India where clean running water is a luxury, this is particularly significant.

Or view the video on the server at:
https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/EdibleSpoonBakeys.mp4

Bakeys has also been praised for buying millet crop directly from the farmers, thereby providing them with a more sustainable income, as well as hiring women from lower income groups.

The millet cutlery has been swiftly followed by wheat bran and wheat straw crockery ranging from dinner plates to soup bowls and cups, produced by companies like World Centric, BioTrem and Eco-Products. They have become so common, they can even be found in places like Bentong, the rural town near Kechara Forest Retreat. These wheat plates feel and look just like plastic, but they are durable, compostable and in some cases, even microwaveable. What is more, companies like World Centric are making use of byproduct from wheat production to make these plates. Wheat straw is ordinarily treated as agricultural waste and in some countries, farmers get rid of it by burning, thereby creating further air pollution. By making use of an agricultural byproduct for the plates, it means there is no further significant water consumption required in the production of these plates.

Meat-free alternatives

savetheworld007

A range of meat-free alternatives have hit the supermarket shelves in recent years, including the wildly-popular Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat burger.

The last few years has seen a recent boom in this industry. Companies like Impossible Food and Beyond Meat have taken to the laboratories, using science to produce an ever-growing range of tasty meat-free alternatives so that we can eat a more environmentally-friendly diet, but not at the cost of our tastebuds.

The idea is to make meat-free alternatives as delicious, familiar and easily-accessible to consumers as possible. They want to make it easy for people to give up meat because in addition to being cruel to animals, the production of meat has a very negative impact on the environment. It produces industrial runoffs which pollute our waterways, and a comparatively large volume of water is used to produce the crops required to feed the animals. The animals themselves also produce large amounts of methane gas, which adds to the deterioration of our ozone.

Or view the video on the server at:
https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/ImpossibleBurger.mp4

Science has also confirmed that meat consumption in excess is harmful to our health, and many doctors in the United States are starting to recommend a vegetarian diet to their patients, having seen the health benefits of going meat-free. So not only does meat harm the environment, and harm the animals, but it also harms the people who consume it. With so many disbenefits to meat consumption, it is no wonder people are beginning to explore meat-free alternatives. Products in Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat have been well-received, garnering positive reviews even from avowed carnivores.

With vegetarianism and veganism growing, the race is on to produce these meat-free alternatives more cheaply and efficiently so that the products can hit the mass market.

Beeswax wraps

savetheworld008

The brainchild of Sarah Kaeck, a resident of Vermont, USA, beeswax wraps are intended to be a natural alternative to clingwrap, also known as clingfilm or Saran Wrap, which do not decompose. Instead, they end up in our rivers and oceans, where unsuspecting marine life try to consume it.

Or view the video on the server at:
https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/BeeswaxWraps.mp4

The beeswax wraps are all-natural cotton soaked in beeswax and using the heat of your hands, they can be moulded to fit the shape of your containers to provide a tight seal. They have no smell so they will not transfer or soak up food odors and being washable, they are therefore reusable. Given proper care, these beeswax wraps have a lifespan of up to one year. They are popularly used to pack lunches, cheese, fruit…you name it, you can think of it, the beeswax wraps will wrap it!

While the original product, Bee’s Wrap, was invented in Vermont, a whole slew of companies offering similar products have sprung up and these are now easily available on the Internet.

Bamboo toothbrushes

savetheworld009

Choose green, choose bamboo!

Biodegradable and basically indistinguishable from regular toothbrushes, bamboo toothbrushes have become a popular alternative and easy way to help the environment. Every day, thousands of plastic toothbrushes are thrown out and they end up in our landfills and in our rivers and lakes, and in the ocean. With bamboo toothbrushes however, this is no longer the case.

Once the toothbrush has outlived its lifespan, the user only needs to yank out the bristles before discarding the toothbrush which, being wood, will naturally decompose. Since dentists recommend that we change our toothbrushes every three months to maintain their effectiveness, these bamboo toothbrushes are an easy solution to the unnecessary trash we create every few months.

Castile soap

savetheworld010

The best product is one that has multiple uses, and few are as multifunctional as Castile soap. Castile soap can be used as shampoo, as soap, as face wash, as laundry detergent, as a vegetable wash, as a window cleaner, to wash your pets with. If you can think of something that needs cleaning, Castile soap can clean it!

Traditional Castile soap is made only from vegetable oils, including olive oil, coconut oil or palm oil. It is a favourite amongst the environmentally-conscious not only because it is gentle on the body, but because it is gentle on the environment too. Regular soaps and shampoos are produced from chemicals which, when washed down our showers and drains, end up in waterways and waterbodies, poisoning them. With traditional Castile soap however, which contains only olive oil, lye and distilled water, this environmental impact is dramatically reduced. And because it uses vegetable oils (rather than animal fat), Castile soap is an appropriate choice for vegetarians and vegans.

Traditional Castile soap only contains three ingredients so it can easily be made at home but for the less domestically-inclined, there are commercially-produced soaps available. One of the most popular and readily-available brands out there includes Dr Bronner’s.

Thank you for the sharing , it has very informative information. It is necessary to take serious action to prevent environment and save earth, to reuse and recycle. We should correct our mistakes, selfishness towards our environment. Every single action taken is to maintain the originality of the environment, if for our betterment to make live healthy and safe from pollution.

Though government has formulated various schemes and established laws to prevent and to save the nature environment. Yet it should be still the duty of each individually to protect it for our future generations, as we are the people consuming its benefits.

It is hard to believe but true that only a little positive movements by everyone may bring a huge change in the declining environment. Glad to read about the inventors ideas to protect the nature and help to save our environment. A good article to be shared with family and friends.

It’s important to realize that our earth is not in good shape. Due to our action, we are actually hurting it bit by bit, day by day and look at the population that hurting the earth? We may not have the creativity to invent something but at least we can contribute by following or take part in the way how to help the earth such as reduce electricity usage, using a reusable straw, tote bags and etc. Remember we only have one earth and if it’s sick it is our responsibility and we can’t find other earth to replace at least at this moment.

  3. Pastor Chia on Apr 3, 2019 at 9:23 am

A simple way to appriciate our earth is to protect the nature and save our envoirament. Having conscious and care around envoirament will help to save the earth. Keep yourself aware thing can harm to nature try to avoid it to use from our daily life. Be a part of this , vegetarian is the step to avoid creating harm to animals. Let us save our earth and living peace in our world.

  4. Julia Tan on Apr 3, 2019 at 8:29 am

Very interesting and inspiring article. Well, how many of you participated in saving the earth. Many talk about it but they even fail to put in little effort to just manage their own behaviour of simply recycling what they have used. Recycling can be simple and easy and can also be fun. Everyone of us just need to put in a little effort in our daily life to do it. Whether you are at home, in the office, vacation, public area etc. You can even join others to do it together. What’s most important is how you want to put in effort to reinforce it with consistency. This is a way of disciplining your life. Stop doing things that will harm the earth. You start from yourself, everyday without missed, you will soon influence other people around you to do the same. We work together to save the world.

Government or authorise should set rules and reinforce it. But unfortunately, they are simply too busy with other things. STOP BEING SELFISH. The world is not just for you but our many generations to come. If you love your children and your grand children, they too have the right to enjoy what you are enjoying today. The future will be a dark one if we still not do something about it.

The simple way you can help to save the environment is start by “you” and with consistent and commitment. Change started is always by me start to change and when everyone do that, change happened. Yes ! YOU- can help protect this planet. The best education for this is we start by set a example in our family ,our working place and friends.
Thank you for sharing this article.

  6. Justin on Apr 3, 2019 at 7:25 am

We as earthlings must get our act together to stop producing even more harm to our only home, the earth before it goes on to deteriorate even more and becoming too late to be saved. We often see sci-fi movies featuring our future earth and its filled with dirt and garbages. In consensus, many of us think it will eventually be like that one day in near future.

  7. Vivian Ong on Apr 3, 2019 at 12:57 am

Every single person on this planet need to play their role in doing things that does not harm the planet for example eating less meat or become full vegetarian and also to reduce the use of items that are not recycleable. If only one single person do then it will not help the planet but if we come together then this will definitely save the planet and also the living beings.

  8. Andrea Lai on Apr 2, 2019 at 11:24 pm

These people are marvelous of creating such excellence structures for purpose to safe environment. Hence, they are the people who aware and care for our mother nature. As for ourselves, we can do our part by starting with little changes example by, using recycle items like bags, bottles, educate people and creating consciousness around us. I believe with our little effort of changing will circulate others to follow. As long as there is consistency on the work, it will turn into habits.

  9. Pastor Henry Ooi on Apr 2, 2019 at 11:17 pm

We are to be blamed for contributing to pollution in general. I think it would be better for us to ask ourselves what we are doing that is adding on to the pollution issue instead of just talking about what others should or should not do. We need re-education and re-habituation to overcome our laziness and to put in the effort to make our world a better place to live in, not only just for humans but also for other living species with form.

  10. pammie yap on Apr 2, 2019 at 10:16 pm

A big thank you to the people who are helping the environment. Even if we start small, there will definitely be changes we can make for a better future. We can always stop using straws or plastic bags. These two are most used in our everyday life. We can use metal straw and recyclable bags instead. Let us start today and think for our future generations. They deserve to have a save environment to live in and we should also start by educating them the importance of recycling.

  11. Datuk May on Apr 2, 2019 at 9:01 pm

The inventions to clean up the oceans and our environment are inspiring.

However as an individual, each and every one of us can do a lot in order for the inventions of cleaning up is effective. Cleaning up is only effective if no more plastic trash is being generated.

Therefore as we find the cleaning up inventions and processes to be inspiring, we as individual should start saying no to plastics. The extremely convenient plastic bags should be the first item we reject and from one item to the next, we can get used to such toxic waste and save the planet. Every one can contribute.

  12. Tek Lee on Apr 2, 2019 at 7:26 pm

The number of non-disposable rubbish on earth is increasing. Whereas, it doesn’t show any reduce in figure. Non-disposable rubbish like plastics are very harmful to animals, because they can’t figure out whether it is food to eat or not. Some really look like their food, for example plastic bags in the sea, which look like jelly fish.
Many manufacturer who is aware of this problem, already started to do something to reduce waste and plastics, in order to save the earth. For example, many components in the car are recyclable. Kitchen utilities, dining cutlery, even some other things that we use daily, are recyclable. Of course, the cost of recycling at the moment are quite high, mainly is because there are not many people using it. Only if, more and more people started using recycled utilities, more demand in the market, and more supplies, then the price will automatically reduce.
Even some small small actions we do daily helps to save the earth. For example what Kechara Soup Kitchen is doing now, to collect surplus food from hyper market, then to channel to the families or whoever who need it. Help to reduce food wastage, it helps to reduce resources on earth. Hopefully more and more people aware of the little thing they do daily, for example keeping all the aluminium and plastic cans after they finish drinking, send to recycle centre to recycle, it helps to save the earth too.

We live within the environment, we have to really take care of our surroundings and the air we breathe. Animals, also are affected by how the environment is affected, the more animals become extinct, the higher the risk there is to the survival of the human species.

  15. Sofi on Sep 18, 2018 at 7:39 am

The planet and the animals suffers so much from the effects of human population and “cravings”. To match human consumption, better stronger materials that last longer are being produced and often times, these are the very items that damages the earth. As with the straw, produced to help us enjoy our drinks but see how see how it ended up in the ocean and the poor turtle’s nose. Or those plastic bags, so convenient to use during shopping and yet found their way into the stomach of the whale who suffocated to death. Thank you PJA for this article that shares how modern science can also work towards nature friendly living with vegetarian/vegan food choices, conscientious choices of disposable items and also those cool equipments for cleaning up those garbage polluting the water. May more people be inspired to move towards caring for our environment through our daily choices and actions.

  16. Stella Cheang on Sep 17, 2018 at 9:53 am

Everyday we see video and pictures on social media about how marine lives suffer from the wastes we human produced and disposed off. It is therefore uplifting to read what humans are doing to help reduce the damages done. Saving the world is saving ourselves. And I think we should do our part too. As plastic wastes are the main culprit in damaging the ocean and marines lives, we can create more awareness on it; and ourselves – reduce, reuse and recycle plastics. Thank you for this article.

Interesting and amazing information to know what those wonderful people are doing to save the world. Its true that humans are slowly killing the planet but if we can do to save it why not. For the future generation to come. We need to create more awareness and do our part starting from home and education. The simplest way is segregating recycle items at home. For the future generation to come. They are using their brains and creativity way doinf their best. Hence whatever we do we got to think further of the harm what is killing us all. Reading this interesting post will inspire us to do more to save the world. Its amazing reading about how the drifting float system and the sea bin works. Thumbs up to those inventors. Thank you Pastor for sharing.???

We need to create more awareness and do our part starting from home and education.
The simplest way is segregating recycle items at home.
Imagine if all household in the world are doing that , it will be a clean environment to live in.

Becoming vegetarian is a good choice as there are lots of food are toxic and contain chemicals that harm our body and environment.

The term Concert of Names of Manjushri is a tantric text within Tibetan Buddhism, describing the various names and qualities of the bodhisattva Manjushri. Its usually recited and often memorized by practitioners in Buddhist ceremonies The text consists of verses that praise and invoke the qualities of Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom and knowledge. By just chanting the names of Manjushri, bring numerous benefits, primarily focused on enhancing wisdom, memory, and clarity of mind. Some traditions associate the practice with protection from negative influences, such as black magic, sickness, and negative karma.
Thank you Rinpoche for introducing this powerful practice to us at Kechara Forest Retreat , Bentong, Pahang.

The Jonang lineage traces its roots back to the 12th century, the profound teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni. Interesting read of the History of Jonang lineage and how it converted to Gelug and how Kalachakra maintain in Gelug until today. The Jonang lineage is a school of Tibetan Buddhism that emphasizes the Kalachakra Tantra. It originated in Tibet, though suppressed in the 17th century, the Jonang tradition persevered in remote regions of Tibet and is now experiencing a revival. The Jonang lineage offers a unique perspective on Buddhist philosophy and practice, influencing other Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing about this profound lineage.

Since escaping from China in 1959, Tibetans refugees settled down in different parts of Indian. The Tibetan leadership and those in exile were given land, opportunities, education and aid, and so many Western charities help them. The Indian government under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru was kind enough and they could do whatever they like. Tibetan settlements in South India have been severely affected by a regional drought. In Tibetian Buddhism accomplished masters could influence the weather. As long as practitioners accomplished in their practices, they had guru devotion and pure samaya with their teachers, it could be done. Many witnesses including our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche saw the masters could stop the rains. The prayers and rituals have not been effective as they gave up their commitments to their lineage lamas, related to their Dorje Shugden practice. Moreover they have lost faith in great master and gurus as they practise Dorje Shugden. They have creates very heavy negative karma. Great masters could stop the rains and making it rain and save the harvest. For the sake of the people who are suffering from horrendous drought, those samaya must be repaired practitioners must all be united again and not discriminate each others due to their Dorje Shugden practice. The Tibetan government should also repair this samaya. Interesting read .
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this .

Manjushri is one of the most important figures in Mahayana Buddhism, and is considered a patron deity of wisdom and learning. By practicing Manjushri our wisdom can enhance and improve significantly. Helps help us with our memory.
Through Rinpoche’s sponsorship at Gaden Sharte Monastery many monks had benefited. Rejoice to them receiving the initiation .Sponsoring the Dharma, which refers to supporting the teachings and practices of Buddhism, is considered a meritorious act in Buddhism. Acts of generosity and support for the Dharma are believed to generate positive karma, leading to positive consequences in this life and future lives.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing and explaining it.

David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter and actor and was once a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner. Regarded as among the most influential musicians of the 20th century . The English singer, songwriter and actor David Bowie died at his Lafayette Street home in New York City but in his will he requested his ashes to be spread according to the Buddhist rituals of Bali, Indonesia. He must been to Bali and fall for the beauty of Buddhism and culture of Bali to choose BUDDHIST ritual upon his death. David Bowie made a conscious choice that made perfect sense, not allowing fans and media to focus on his body and his death.

HORRIFYING, feeling sad after watching the video. The way or rather methods of slaughtering of pigs at slaughter house is indeed cruel. Just like human beings, they do feel pain and fear to be slaughter. No living beings would choose to die in pain or a painful death. Hopefully those methods have since been changed to minimize animal suffering. Stop consuming meat and choosing to go meatless or on vegetarian is the best choice.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this to bring awareness of how those poor pigs suffer before been killed.

Hoichi the Earless is the name of a well-known figure from Japanese folklore. His story is well known in Japan. Some centuries ago there lived at Akamagaséki a blind man named Hoichi, who was famed for his skill in recitation and in playing upon the biwa. According to legend, Hoichi was a blind minstrel with an amazing gift for the biwa (a loquat-shaped Japanese lute). Despite his talents, Hoichi was very poor and was forced to live at Amidaji Temple under the care of a friendly priest. There’s an interesting stories behind how he lost his ear to the Samurai and the priest wrote kanji characters all over Hoichi’s body rendered him invisible to the samurai. Hoichi’s ordeal had freed him from the spirit’s power, and he went on to recover from his wounds and become a famous musician. His story become well known and had it appearing in the books as well as in film.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

HH the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche is an erudite, and highly attained lama. Millions of Gelug practitioners from all over monasteries view H H the Gaden Tripa as the supreme leader of their lineage. H H the Gaden Tripa gave a three-day teaching on the sacred Highest Anuttarayoga Tantra practice of Vajrayogini at his Dharma centre in France, Thar Deu Ling. A very special text containing teachings composed by HH Gaden Trisur Rinpoche were also distributed. Incredible , HH Gaden Trisur Rinpoche continue giving teachings at the advanced age of 92. Haven writen a book about the Vajrayogini practice shows us the importance of this practice in this day and age. Merely by reciting her mantra daily without break can gain spiritual attainments, perceive her holy form, and even ascend to her pure land — Kechara Paradise.
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound knowledge about Vajrayogini

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
