What is Happening in Bali?

The customs of each country is very unique. As you learn more some traditions endear you and some traditions really surprise you. I am not here to judge any custom, but I am not in agreement with traditions that bring pain to others. The tradition of eating dog meat among some non-Muslim population exists in several parts of Indonesia. For example, in Lapo, North Sumatran restaurants, cuisines that contain dog meat are called B1, which is the abbreviation for biang or dog in Batak language. In this region, dog meat is cooked with spices and wine and served with gravy. In Central Java, there is a cuisine called Tongseng Asu, which is a type of soup that contains dog meat. In North Sulawesi and Bali, dog meat is known as Rintek Wuuk (RW).

Satay, seasoned grilled meat, made from dog meat.

Satay, seasoned grilled meat, that may contain dog meat.

Indonesians who eat dog meat believe that the dishes help to enhance the blood circulation and boost their stamina. However, none of these claims have been proven scientifically. In fact, eating dog meat can be hazardous to human health because the Indonesian government does not consider dogs as livestock. Therefore, there is no regulation on how to trade, breed, and slaughter dogs for consumption purposes.

In their recent article for ABC News Australia, an Australian national news service and a subsidiary of Australian Broadcasting Corporation, titled Evidence Shows Dogs in Bali Are Being Brutally Killed and the Meat Sold to Unsuspecting Tourists, Journalists James Thomas and Lesley Robinson revealed that many dogs in Bali, a popular tourist destination in Indonesia, are killed in an inhumane manner. The dog meat is being made into satay, seasoned grilled meat, and being sold as chicken meat to unsuspecting tourists. These activities are not only unnecessarily cruel but also illegal and introduce a health hazard to the consumers.

Animal Cruelty is illegal in Indonesia

There is a staggering number of dogs being murdered for their meat. According to Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), in Bali alone, approximately 100,000 dogs are brutally killed every year:

  • 100% of these dogs are inhumanely killed.
  • 70% are butchered alive: They are lassoed and partially strangled before their body parts are hacked off while they are alive.
  • 25% are poisoned.
  • 1% are shot with air rifles.
  • 4% are inhumanely killed using other methods.

http://bawabali.com/100000-dogs-are-eaten-a-year-in-bali-stop-it-now/

BAWA also claimed that 50% of the restaurants that sell dog meat (RW restaurants) in Bali obtained their meat supply from outside the region although it is illegal to transport dogs from and to Bali. In addition, there are regulations in Indonesia that promote animal welfare and protect them from animal cruelty:

  • Indonesian Criminal Codes (Kitab Undang-Undang Hukum Pidana (KUHP)) article 302 on animal protection and welfare. This particular article states that those who conduct animal cruelty can be imprisoned up to nine months.
  • Government Regulation No. 7 Year 1999 on the preservation of plants and animals.
  • Act No. 5 Year 1990 on the conservation of natural resources and the related ecosystems.
  • Act No. 18 Year 2009 on Animal Farms and Livestock.
  • Government Regulation No. 95 Year 2012 on the health of veterinarian community and animal welfare.

Based on the above acts, regulations, and criminal codes, the methods employed by the dog hunters in Bali are clearly illegal and punishable by law.

Eating Dog Meat Can Result in Health Hazard for the Customers

Eating dog meat can adversely affect the human health. According to Codex Alimentarious Commission (CAC), a subsidiary of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and Office Internationale des Epizzoties (OIE), an organisation that promote animal health, dog meat is considered unsafe for human consumption. According to Davina Veronica Hariadi, the chairwoman of Garda Satwa Indonesia (GSI), an organisation that promotes animal welfare in Indonesia:

[Eating] dog’s meat may cause cholera, rabies, and trichinosis in the human body. … Most of the dogs to be cooked are taken from the streets or abducted from their houses. Their health conditions vary. Some have rabies and parasites that may also infect humans who eat them. Sometimes the kidnappers use poison to bait and kill the dogs before they are taken from their houses. So if you eat their meat, you’ll be eating some of the poison too.

http://jakartaglobe.id/features/stopping-dog-meat-trade/

The article written by James Thomas and Lesley Robinson also describes a case of a dog hunter who used cyanide to kill a puppy. According to Doctor Andrew Dawson, the Director of the New South Wales Poisons Information Centre, eating poisoned meat can cause health hazard. The symptoms may vary from light nausea to death depending on how much poison is contained in the meat.

Today, animal lovers organisations such as BAWA, GSI, Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), Change For Animals Foundation (CFAF), Animal Friends Jogja (AFJ), and Animals Australia (AA) are actively promoting the hazard of eating dog meat and the illegal and brutal manner in which the dogs are killed in Indonesia. May the information provided in this article also creates the same awareness.

Evidence Shows Dogs in Bali are Being Brutally Killed and the Meat Sold to Unsuspecting Tourists

Australian tourists are unwittingly eating dog meat in Bali, according to evidence provided to the ABC’s 7.30 program.

The animals are brutally caught and then butchered not far from the beaches visited by more than 1 million Australians every year.

Some of the animals are poisoned, posing a risk to human health, according to a leading toxicologist.

Whilst eating dog meat is not illegal in Bali, killing animals cruelly or eating meat contaminated with poison is against the law, Animals Australia’s campaign director Lyn White said.

“The dog-meat trade breaches animal cruelty laws and food safety laws. That is a statement of fact,” she said.

In an investigation led by Animals Australia (AA), 7.30 has obtained evidence that dogs are being bludgeoned, strangled or poisoned for human consumption.

“Dog meat is essentially filtering into the tourist food chain [in Bali],” Ms White said.

Behind 66 Beach in the tourist area of Seminyak, in southern Bali, a street vendor admits he’s selling dog.

AA investigator: “What is that you’re selling?”
Vendor: “Dog satay.”
AA investigator: “This is why you have a picture of a dog here?”
Vendor: “Yeah, yeah.”

But he tells tourists a different story.

A group of Australians asks the vendor if the satays are dog meat.

Vendor: “Satay just $1.”
Australian: “Mystery bag. What is, chicken?”
Vendor: “Satay.”
Australian: “Satay chicken, not dog?”
Vendor: “No, not dog.”
Australian: “I’m happy just as long as it’s not dog.”

Misled, they unknowingly eat the dog meat.

It’s not just being sold on the beach — specialty restaurants sell dog meat as well.

“Tourists will walk down a street, they’ll see a street store selling satay but what they are not realising is the letters RW on the store mean it is dog meat being served,” Ms White said.

“They’re just sitting down ordering satay having no idea that they’re eating dog.”

Warning: the rest of this story contains images and descriptions that some people may find distressing.

Terrified Dogs Caught, Muzzled and Put into Bags

Over four months, an undercover investigator for Animals Australia infiltrated the dog trade in Bali. To protect his identity we have called him ‘Luke’.

“I began the investigation by pinpointing and getting to know the key players in Bali’s completely unregulated dog-meat industry,” he said.

“Eventually, they invited me to join them as their gangs stole, hunted, poisoned and killed dogs.”

Pretending to be a documentary maker interested in local cuisine, Luke was invited by a restaurant owner to witness his father, Pak Puris, catching dogs in Kintamani in Bali’s north.

“The catching was fiercely aggressive. The dogs screamed and writhed as the noose strangled them. Some tried to bite through the ties to free themselves but with their muzzles lashed, their attempts were futile,” Luke said.

“The villagers accepted 100,000Rp ($10) for the animals they caught. The terrified dogs were bagged and loaded onto the motorbike and the hunters headed off.”

7.30 meets Luke in the tourist hotspot area of Seminyak. After seeing his vision, we ask: how do you cope filming such horror?

“As an animal cruelty investigator, I have trained myself to cope with cruelty, but nothing prepared me for the brutal catching of dogs in the village,” he said.

“I focussed on my camera work but it was gut-wrenching to hear these dogs … screaming and wailing in terror and sorrow.”

During dinner, Luke gets a phone call. A contact tells him where captured dogs are being held for slaughter. We make plans to go there.

We drive for four hours to Bali’s north. It’s near dusk when we stop and Luke leads us towards an outcrop of trees at the back of a rice paddy.

Behind the trees, a small tin-roofed hut shelters a tethered cow. Opposite is a bamboo cage holding seven dogs, muzzled and bound by the legs with vinyl tape.

It is dark inside. The dogs are lying in their own urine and faeces. They whimper and strain to breathe through the tape that binds their mouths shut.

A dog’s leg dangles by a rope from the tin roof. The scene is confronting.

The catcher, Pak Puris, sits outside the cage.

Shortly, he will bludgeon them to death with a metal pole. It is not an exact science, and harrowing to watch.

We did not film it ourselves but saw Luke’s vision, which he’d recorded on an earlier occasion.

We’re told Pak Puris is 83. Through a translator, he tells us he doesn’t eat dog, “it makes him want to vomit”.

Over three decades, he’s killed thousands of dogs. “Twelve a week,” the translator said.

We ask him why he chose the dog trade.

“He can’t get another job, he is too old,” the translator said.

Dogs Shot in the Street, Others Poisoned

On another occasion, Luke follows a man named Gus who is riding a scooter through the back streets of Denpasar. He has a rifle slung over his shoulder.

“Soon a suitable dog caught his eye. A black dog was lying down on the doorstep of a shop,” Luke told 7.30. “[He] killed the dog with a single shot.”

Shooting is the most humane method of killing witnessed by Luke. During his investigation he documented dogs being beaten to death, hung from trees, and poisoned.

7.30 has seen the vision, which is too graphic to publish.

Luke has also filmed a puppy eating a fish head laced with poison.

He can be heard asking the dog killers:

Luke: “Tell me again what it is?”
Man: “Cyanide.”
Luke: “Oh, OK.”

Shortly after eating the fish head, the puppy dies.

“It took many, agonizing minutes for the puppy to die, and for the first time in my career, I turned off the camera,” Luke said.

“I sat stroking him as he died and found myself apologising for the cruelty of my fellow man.”

Concerns About Risks to Human Health

“Poisoned meat is entering the food chain,” according to AA’s Lyn White.

Doctor Andrew Dawson, who is the director of the New South Wales Poisons Information Centre and head of toxicology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, said there was a health risk.

“Because you are going to be exposed to a very toxic poison,” Dr Dawson said.

“Firstly, cyanide is not going to be destroyed by cooking. So there will be cyanide throughout the dog’s body.

Eating dog meat is not illegal in Bali. ABC News: James Thomas

Eating dog meat is not illegal in Bali. ABC News: James Thomas

“The actual risk depends upon how much poison is in the dog meat.”

The clinical toxicologist said concentrations of cyanide in the flesh of the dog commonly used in a satay stick could result in minor symptoms such as “feeling nauseated, diarrhoea, aches in the muscles and shortness of breath”.

However, if you were to eat the meat “again and again, that can actually give organ damage and damage to the nerves”.

And, Dr Dawson said, the symptoms could be as severe as death.

“If you are eating, for example, a curry and it was including bits of the animal stomach or the heart, then you would expect really high concentrations of cyanide … which could be fatal.”

Dog curry is sold in dog meat restaurants in Bali. However, 7.30 did not verify what cuts of meat are used.

Dogs being caught in rabies red zones: AA

“A rabies red zone will mean there has been a recent case of rabies in dogs in that area,” Ms White explained.

“Strictly, it’s against the law to move dogs from a rabies red zone to other areas of Bali but that’s what’s happening because of the dog-meat trade.”

Rabies can be spread to humans via a dog’s saliva. Since 2015 there have been 20 known human deaths in Bali from rabies.

According to the World Health Organisation there are tens of thousands of rabies deaths every year, mostly in Asia and Africa.

Some Locals Think Dog Meat is Good for Their Health

Eating dog meat in Bali is not a long-held tradition. ABC News: James Thomas

Five minutes from the spot where dogs were poisoned with cyanide, a dog satay BBQ draws a hungry crowd.

A 60-year-old man tells 7.30: “It is good for health especially during winter. It is good for breathing. It makes us strong.”

But the practice of eating dog meat in Bali is not a long-held tradition, according to Ms White.

“It was actually a Christian ethnic minority that brought dog meat into Bali. It’s fuelled by a minority that came to work, really in the hospitality industry, and unfortunately it has taken off,” she said.

Some in Bali Are Fighting to End the Industry

Influential Hindu spiritual leader Gusti Ngurah Harta has vowed to fight the dog trade.

“We were shocked when we heard that people here in Bali are eating dog meat. It means they forgot their elders’ teaching,” he said. “We are not allowed to eat dog meat in Bali. This is upsetting.

“In Hindu tradition in Bali, the dog is considered a holy animal. They are very patient and loyal to their owner. The Balinese love dogs because dog is their friend.”

With connections to Balinese politicians, Mr Gusti has vowed to fight the trade.

“This is very sad for me to see those pictures. If it’s happening in front of me, I would stop this cruelty to the dogs,” he said.

The Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) is working to protect the island’s dogs.

“We rescue them from the [dog] trader,” said Bagus Ndurah, a volunteer with BAWA.

He said his organisation was currently looking after about 150 dogs.

It’s a drop in the ocean relative to the 70,000 dogs BAWA estimates are slaughtered in Bali every year to supply a growing appetite for dog meat.

BAWA has documented 70 restaurants serving dog in Bali.

“Bali is Australia’s playground, over a million Australians go to Bali every year,” Ms White said.

“We have a unique friendship with the Balinese. We have a unique love of dogs.

“I think we are in a position where we can potentially turn this … shocking story of cruelty into a good outcome and bring an end to the dog-meat trade.”

But she said she was aware of the effect Animals Australia’s campaign may have on the livelihoods of Balinese employed in the dog trade.

“We’ve given thought to that. I’ve even spoken to our management about possibility of compensation,” she said.

“This is not about laying blame. This is about unnecessary cruelty that puts the human health population at risk and is causing shocking animal cruelty, it also is breaching Bali laws.

“We are certainly also willing to partner with the Bali government to bring about positive solution here.”

Bali is a magical Island probably the most well-known and most visited Indonesian island. A part of Indonesia archipelago, Bali owns the panorama and unique culture that make this island an ideal location for a vacation.

It’s shock to discover people in Bali are eating dog meat. Aside from the cruelty, the greatest shock was to discover that tourists are unwittingly eating dog meat and fueling the mobile dog meat vendors are trawling popular beaches in Bali selling satays from buckets, deliberately not telling people the origin of the meat.

This is causing shocking animal cruelty over the popular holiday destination and
definitely putting the local Balinese and foreign tourists’ health at risk .Thanks for the thoughtful sharing and bringing awareness to many.

Shocking to read what is happening in Bali, Indonesia. A beautiful place like Bali known for its forested volcanic mountains, iconic rice paddies, beaches and coral reefs . Dining in Bali presents endless choices of exotic, local cuisine, but not many tourist know about what been served on their table . Well there is dog meat trading in Bali which many are not aware. I read articles countries like China, Vietnam and Korean killing dogs for meat but never expect its happened in Bali too. Real surprised to learn that some of the Indonesians eat dog’s meat as well. Selling dog meat is not against the law in Indonesia but then how could they slaughter a dog. Looking at those pictures where the dogs being tortured to death for their meat is heartfelt. According to animal welfare group more than thousands are slaughtered every month in Central Java. With the article from ABC News Australia, has indeed brought attention to many dogs lovers regarding to the cruelty in Bali where the dogs are killed in an inhumane manner. Animal cruelty is illegal in Indonesia, yet it happened in Bali as one could from those pictures tells all. It good now the Indonesian Government is banning the sale and consumption of the meat on animal cruelty and public health grounds. Many animal lovers organisations in Bali are doing a good job nowadays by promoting the hazard of eating dog meat and creating the awareness of the cruelty manner of how the dogs are slaughtered.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

It’s really sad to know such killing and eating dog meat is a custom for certain countries. Causing harm and pain to living beings is not acceptable. Look at the dogs that being tortured to death for their meat. That is really unacceptable. How if someone did the same to us? but we called that murder. It’s the same as people killed the dog. It’s just human to make it sound different but the action is the same, ‘cruelty’.

Awareness and penalty are important to implement to stop this. The government need to play an important role here to make sure and support this campaign. As long the deman stop then the supply will stop and the campaign on adopting a dog is illegal.

Bali is a very beautiful island in Indonesia, every year millions of tourists flock to Bali for holidays. It is rich with Hindu culture, most of it’s residents are of Hindu faith. People go there to enjoy the beach, sun and of course the food.

I know Chinese, Koreans and the Vietnamese are known to eat dog meat, but I am surprised to learn that some groups of Indonesians eat dog meat too! It is true that the dog meat can be very health hazardous because it is not regulated by the health authority. The dog meat might contain diseases that are harmful to human’s health. I think many of the dogs killed are strayed dogs that are properly sick or infected by parasites or diseases.

It is shocking to know there is dog meat trading in Bali. What is more upsetting is the food sellers are selling dog meat to the tourists without the knowledge of the tourists. This is very unethical. The local authority should take action on these sellers to protect the tourists. If this continues, the image of Bali will definitely be affected.

I am shocked to read that there is dog meat trading in Bali and it is getting more popular! The way the dogs are killed is so inhumane, their feet and mouth are tied up waiting to be killed. They struggle to escape but nothing happens. They must have been very scared.

Fortunately someone influential has noticed this problem and is taking action against it. I hope the local authority can impose heavy penalty to people who are involved in dog meat industry. This is to protect the welfare of the locals, tourists (since dog meat trading is not regulated and may bring diseases) and of course dogs.

Absolutely disgusting! From the inhumane capturing of dogs to murdering them alive and then serve on a platter to unsuspecting tourists. This whole chain is totally sickening and should be banned. I hope this article will open the eyes of more people to be aware that this is happening so near to us and bring more attention to stop this trade.

Dogs often being called as human’s best friend due to their loyalty and able to give companionship to humans.
But, this is different in Indonesia where many Indonesians strongly believed that eating dog meat may help to enhance their blood circulation, boost their stamina and good for breathing especially during winter. Such perceptions drive people only think about themselves and exercise cruelties against animals just to fulfill their own desire selfishness.

In most of the religious teaching would like the people to practice kindness to others and this should not cover only people but animals too. I sincerely hope Mr Gusti can work with BAWA to protect the dogs and stop all these cruelties to the dogs.

  17. Joy Kam on Jul 9, 2017 at 12:58 pm

This is horrible! I would have never thought Bali or Indonesia would be serving people dog meat! Simply because the majority is Muslim and they are not allowed to touch dogs. But I guess not for Bali and they are mostly Hindus. So what happened to the so-called laws that protect animals? Obviously not applied at all. I guess when you are poor like the old Pak at 83 who cannot find any other means of work to support himself, this is probably the last resort he sees. I am sure if they were given something else they can do, they would. At least there is another option.

Glad to know that animal welfare organisations like BAWA and AA is looking for ways to stop this cruelty and they are acting upon it. I hope they will succeed since most of Bali’s economy comes from tourism and especially tourists from Australia. I hope they advertise the 70 dog meat restaurants and warned people from going there. If I was a tourist there, I would appreciate being warned. Eating dog meat is not only cruel but also a health hazard, so why on earth do people still do it. It can only be due to ignorance. Therefore, education needs to be in place from a very young age, and schools are the best place to start. Leaflets and pamphlets should be circulated to every household to warn them about the dangers of eating dog meat. If people cannot feel for the dogs, maybe they can feel for their own health. Whatever is necessary to stop the demand for dog meat is worth the try.

In reality, I realise, actually, the Bali people’s view is without bias, they see and label dog meat as just “meat”, just like any other meat out there. Let’s be honest, dog meat, chicken meat, cow meat, goat meat, whatever meat, what is the difference? It is actually the same, it came from a living being that feels pain, so the cruelty is the same as to eating chicken. Again here we see our selective mind based on wrong projections. If it is animal cruelty to eat dog meat, it is animal cruelty to eat all types of meat, like it or not.

The best way is to go for a vegetarian diet, nonetheless.

Go vegetarian so no animals are harmed for the sustenance of our bodies. For people who know knows about karma and reincarnation we all know that all beings have been our mothers before, so how we we think about harming other beings.

  19. Anne Ong on Jun 30, 2017 at 11:32 pm

This is really a horrible thing to do! Even to think of it gives me the creeps to eat satay. They are so cruel to kill dogs to use the meat to make satay. So pitiful and uncivilized to do this. Thank you very much Rinpoche to share this article and create awareness _/\_

It’s quite shocking to read about this news on dog meat – how the dogs were brutally killed, how the unhygienic and poisonous meat enter into food market, without the regulation of laws. Even worst is unsuspecting tourists are being deceived to eat the so called chicken meat which is actually dog meat.

This is definitely putting the local Balinese and foreign tourists’ health at risk and is causing shocking animal cruelty. It would to certain extent do damage to Bali’s reputation as a popular international tourists spot. Most importantly, it’s an exercise or action which give pain to another being. Hope Bali government looks into this; and whoever learn about this bring awareness to many, in order to bring an end the cruelty towards dogs around Bali and Indonesia.

  21. Jace Chong on Jun 29, 2017 at 8:39 pm

Thanks Rinpoche and the blog team for sharing this shocking news which is a cruel fact that is happening in Bali.

I know any slaughtering of animals is not right, the dog murdering videos are especially heart wrenching for me as dog is human best friend.

Perhaps the uncontrolled quantity of stray dogs and the misbelief of consuming dog meat is healthy are contributing to this, but I just wonder how can these slaughterers were not affected by the screaming and struggling of these dogs, who use to guard our home. Maybe like many slaughterer houses, animals are just meat and equal to income.

Thanks to the courageous journalists and the animal welfare organizations for bringing this up to the world. May the government take action to stop this cruelty. Bali is a paradise for many tourists, it should be a paradise for dogs too.

    Thank you.

This is really shocking because I have always loved and enjoyed Bali. Warm hospitality, spiritual, friendly are the few keywords that come to my mind when I think about Bali.

So it’s really sad that nice people can be cruel to animals and even dogs out of desperation to keep their livelihood. I feel sad for them because they do not know any better that karma will catch up. Ignorance is not bliss. They are blind spots to what is good and bad.

  23. Stella Cheang on Jun 28, 2017 at 12:45 pm

No animals should be subjected to cruelty just because we, human, want to consume them. It actually makes us as cruel as wild animals. The poor dogs are being lassoed and partially strangled before the body parts are hacked off while they are alive. Since the dogs’ meat industry is unregulated, there is no standard procedure when it comes to hygiene and health control. Customers are consuming the meat at their own risk, and it is not unheard of cases of rabies or parasites on the dogs that can be transferred to the human.

As if the brutality is not enough, dogs meat are sold as chicken meat to unsuspecting customers. Bali is a beautiful tourist destination blessed with endless enchantments, and a year-round influx of tourists. It is really unnecessary for vendors to lie and lure tourists to consume dogs meat against their own will. Not to mention that the meat is a health hazard because they could contain poison. It is an obvious example of heartless businessmen profit by being a torturer and a liar; and they do this over and over and over again, day after day. It is not hard to imagine the retribution awaiting in the afterlife.

  24. KarenC. on Jun 28, 2017 at 11:54 am

Bali is a world famous tourists spot and its economy is believed to be boosted mostly by tourists. The reasons tourists like Bali are mainly due to its beautiful beaches, culture, rice paddies, nightlife, the vibe and of course its good food.. Tapping on all these money-making factors, the locals conveniently come up with different tactics to hike up their businesses i.e. cheating the tourist. It’s not only inhumane to kill the dogs for business, it’s also inhumane to cheat the innocent consumers just for making more money. Dogs are killed brutally for their meat and tourists ate them happily thinking they are eating chicken, but what’s the difference as they both are meat? Chickens, too, i believed with many other animals are killed brutally and inhumanely for human’s tastebuds.

Go vegetarian is the only way to stop all these acts.

  25. Datuk May on Jun 27, 2017 at 12:31 pm

Many countries in the world have laws against animal cruelty and Indonesia is no exception. Such being the case, dogs, considered a man’s friend and pet, will be within this category of animals which are protected by law. Therefore the manner dogs are trapped, killed and served as a delicacy in restaurant will fall under “illegal”.

Besides the illegality of serving dog meat, there are no hygienic guidelines for sale of dog meat (since it is illegal). How can anyone eating dog meat feel that this act of consumption be good and healthy? How can they ensure that the meat they are taking fall within any hygienic guidelines? Meat generally becomes contaminated with storage. As such the fallacy of dog meat being healthy is a total folly.

Above all views of dog meat eating being illegal and unhygienic, how can anyone of sane mind even be so indulging and greedy to eat a sentient being that they can see everywhere and read about of being so much assistance to humans and never causing any harm.

    This cruelty must be stopped.

  26. graceleong on Jun 26, 2017 at 6:21 pm

Bali is famous for beautiful beaches, spas, exotic hotels, shopping, handicrafts etc. A city that is funded mainly by the tourism industry. It’s a shock to know that there is this insanely cruel activity that’s ongoing in this popular holiday destination !
This dog meat diet may be something which has been ongoing for generations but people should be more aware with modern times and technology to stop such cruel acts from continuing. Worse of all, innocent people are being told it’s chicken and not dog meat they are eating. That’s totally irresponsible and deceiving! The authorities should know better then to allow such deceit to take place!
This article is certainly an eye opener to me. Never knew that Bali was a nation of dog meat consumption; dogs killed so in such an insanely cruel way !!
I hope the news of such cruelty will bring enough publicity to the visitors to give the authorities pressure to act on it and stop these acts. A law should be enacted to protect the animals !

  27. Vivian Ong on Jun 26, 2017 at 6:19 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for highlighting this article. Never thought that Bali as a tourist attraction place will have animal cruelty happening there. I totally agree that dogs should not be eaten. Dogs are not like the farm animals. Some dogs may be sick and when we eat them, it may be hazardous to our health. This dog eating should stop as the way these people hunt and kill the dogs are so cruel. Both Australian and Indonesia government should work hand in hand to stop this dog eating culture.

    With folded palms,
    Vivian

  28. Lin Mun on Jun 26, 2017 at 4:26 pm

It is outrageous to know that there were so much illegal and inhumane killing of dogs in Bali even though there are laws to protect animals. As Bali is mainly Hindus I never thought that there were vast dog meat eating trade there. The most sad thing is that the satay seller even lie that he is not selling dog meat and many tourist ate them unknowingly.

The way they kill the dogs are very inhumane. I hope Mr Gusti the Hindu spiritual leader in Bali together with the local authority are able to put a stop to this inhumane dog trade. I hope more awareness will be brought to the world about such gruesome act to protect tourist and prevent locals from eating dog meat.

  29. Fong on Jun 25, 2017 at 11:01 pm

It is sad when animals are killed in an inhumane way. When people are poor and think only of material need without any consideration for the animals, it is a sad state of affairs.

But, what makes a nasty situation despicable is when they sell without informing the buyers what they are buying. That is lying.

I can understand their need for “free” meat for them to trade in. I can understand their need for a means of making a living. But, it need not be so cruel and dishonest. Very sad as these vendors are creating such very bad karma and will bode well for their future.

May they realize what they have done and are doing to change their ways and stop the negative karma.

  30. Uncle Eddie on Jun 25, 2017 at 3:51 pm

As said in the religious doctrines, “Humans should not wander about seeing how all creatures are being treated, as he himself would not want to be treated in the same way!” There never seem to be an end to the abuses of animals. Titled evidences have shown by The Australian National News Service, that dogs are being brutally killed in an inhumane manner, with their flesh cut off from their bodies while half dead, made into fresh “satay”(seasoned grilled meat) and being sold as chicken meat to unsuspecting tourists! These are not only unnecessary cruelty and evil acts, but also a health hazard to the unsuspecting consumers. According to the Bali Animal Welfare Association(BAWA) in Bali, approximately more than 100,000 dogs were brutally butchered or killed alive each year! Most of the health conditions of these diseased dogs may have rabies, parasites, or killed with cyanide or poison. Eating the meat of such animals may also effect those eating such meat, thereby causing damages to the organs, nerves and heart. Any form of cruelty towards animals is not to tolerated. Not only should punitive action be taken against the abusers, but there should be awareness campaigns in educating the general public on “Animals Rights” as well as to pet owners about their responsibilities. In today’s degenerate time, the feelings of the true and pure morality should be the source of all human beings. Animals are like humans too. Every creature can think, feel pains and happiness. Every creature with a will to live has the right to live free from pain and sufferings. Nevertheless, just like oneself, whether any being, be it a creature or human is beautiful, handsome, ugly or friendly, all want to have happiness and do not want sufferings. As beings are equal in their desire for happiness and have their right to obtain it, we must automatically feel empathy for them towards achieving it too! Thank you so much for the sharing Rinpoche.

OO dear….heart felt, feeling sad ..as i thought only China and maybe one of two neighbouring countries do have dog meat trade.Shocking-investigation has uncovered the brutal dog meat trade in-Bali do exist. Bali are in dog meat trade as well..True enough …Watching the video was terrible, looking at how those unlucky dogs were killed and cooked as satay ( BBQ meat).Dog meat are sold to unsuspecting tourist who did not realised it. I read in newspapers too.
The way those dogs were abused , poisoned ,shot and killed really upset me.Its agonizing minutes suffering in pain was too much for me to continue watching the video.
I am glad now Bali Animal Welfare Association and the authority concerned are trying to stop the dog meat trade. It was only the shocking news uncovered when tourist was given dog meat as satay.Eating the dogs meat can cause human health as well as causing shocking animal cruelty.
Never hurt animals or bring pain to them.Have compassion…quoted.

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.

Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. May H E Tsem Rinpoche’s sincere advice to reach the far shore of liberation to everyone reading this blog. The most truly generous people are those who give silently without asking any in return. There is no exercise better than reaching and lifting people up. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Well creating and lighting for others we naturally light our own way. Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Umze for the day was Siew Hong. She's just been with us for slightly more than a year now but she's proven her capability in leading the puja. Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. When she leads, make sure you are there to hear her chant for yourself! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
