Creating a doggie heavenIn search of an office big enough for its staff and their dogs, Kurgo, a Salisbury, Massachusetts-based startup that makes dog-travel gear, took over its own 4,000-square-foot warehouse in 2015. (Here, Josie “the jumper” lounges near the creative department.)

Marking the territory – The centerpieces of the office’s structure are massive orange shipping containers–the very same ones Kurgo’s products are imported in. Wood paneling for walls and desks is reclaimed from Maine rivers. (Here, Mia, a yellow Lab, attends a meeting.) IMAGE: COURTESY COMPANY

Roaming with Rover – In addition to the shipping containers and reclaimed wood, a vintage 1956 Airstream trailer adds personality to Kurgo’s office. The founders say the trailer reminds them of travels with their family dogs. IMAGE: COURTESY COMPANY

Fetching amenities – Humans weren’t the only considerations in building out Kurgo’s offices. The ample kitchen has an easy-clean floor, and is always stocked with kibble and treats for the four-to-eight pups that come along to work each day. IMAGE: COURTESY COMPANY

Creativity booster – “Besides being great stress relievers, the dogs boost creativity, testing our products and providing us with ideas for new ones,” says Kurgo co-founder Kitter Spater. No word on whether they’ve tried the slide. IMAGE: COURTESY COMPANY

Lap of luxury – The new office features numerous amenities for dog owners, including a low water fountain, fake grass to create indoor play areas, and baskets of dog toys. IMAGE: COURTESY COMPANY

Pack mentality – The dog-friendly office provides a natural community for the dog owners too. They not only go on walks during lunch or afternoon breaks (dubbed “stink and steps”), but also often volunteer to watch one anothers’ pooches for weekends away. IMAGE: COURTESY COMPANY

Shake it off – After that long lunchtime walk, a shower specially designed to help hose off muddy puppies is a neat, if unusual, addition to the company bathroom. IMAGE: COURTESY COMPANY

Sit, stand, roll over – Kurgo’s offices are customizable, with standing desks for the employee and beds for any size of pooch. (Here, a Lab named Clover relaxes, while his human, Lisa, works.) IMAGE: COURTESY COMPANY

Spreading the love – Kurgo doesn’t just love its own dogs, like Mia, here. It also hosts occasional after-work “Yappy Hours” so dog owners can connect. And it launched Dogs Allowed, a database of dog-friendly businesses. IMAGE: COURTESY COMPANY

The Kurgo’s offices are amazing as these offices are not only designed and built to meet their staff’s needs in order to carry out their tasks, but also including the welfare and necessities for the furry friends to stay protected, emotionally and physically taken care of, while the pet owners can focus in their work without any worries of their dogs. There is so much compassion, kindness, care and love filled within the amenities, which I believe could be the keys to success for that organization because the harmony-with-animals environment allows the staff there to stay relax and enjoying their work. Hence, this can lead them to generate new ideas for improvement at work and able to increase productivity as well. Most importantly, people there are given the opportunity to learn on how to stay with the dogs under the same work place because it takes a lot of patience, care and compassion to communicate and interact with the dogs. Eventually, the staff there can easily pick up and practise the qualities of respect, love, tolerance, kindness, compassion and selflessness.

May all the animals will be blessed and protected by all the Buddhas, able to gain good and higher rebirth to learn and practise Dharma until achieving enlightenment.

    Humbly with folded hands,

I personally think that this is a very good practice where the employees no longer have to worry about leaving pets at home alone. The work environments that cultivate loving kindness, caring and compassion create a much more positive and productive place to work.
It may influence everyone especially those who do not have pets to be kinder to animals.
Thank you Rinpoche and blog team for this interesting article as a reminder to us to love and be kind to animals no matter where we are.??

  3. Alice Tay on Mar 24, 2017 at 10:04 pm

Many companies especially in overseas are very considerate and allow their employees to bring their dogs to work. I personally think that this is a very good practice where the employees no longer have to worry about leaving pets at home alone. The work environments that cultivate loving kindness, caring and compassion create a much more positive and productive place to work. Besides, it may influence everyone especially those who do not have pet to be more kind to the animals.

Nevertheless, the employer and employees may have to work together to maintain the safe and cleanliness work place such as reduce odour, provide clean air and many others.

Thank you for this interesting article as a reminder to us to love and be kind to animals no matter where we are.

  4. Jill Yam on Sep 5, 2016 at 4:11 pm

Just fantastic. Imagine to have a place like this here where we can bring our furry friends with us to work.

Both owners and dogs will be happy to be together at work and the dog don’t need to be lonely at home. Just love this concept very much.

  5. Sofi on Aug 18, 2016 at 4:49 am

It is so lovely for Kurgo to create such a dog friendly environment for its staff and their dogs. Nowadays, many people regard their dogs as their own children and spend as much time and money on their dogs as they would their own children (if they had any). Therefore it make sense for Kurgo to provide its offices to be dog friendly as its staff will have the ease of mind of having their “children” there with them. The dogs will be happy to have their owners with them instead of being home alone.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing such an interesting concept that provides peace of mind for its staff and their dogs. I am sure that the productivity of the staff increases as they are able to focus more on their work without worry of their “children”.

  6. Wan Wai Meng on Aug 3, 2016 at 12:20 pm

This is such a creative and neat way to have your pets with us. More companies should provide facility for dogs to come to work as well. Pets can always do what we least we anticipate so they can really surprise us.

  7. Sock Wan on May 25, 2016 at 9:02 pm

Cute! This is so wonderful that the office is animal friendly. If the animal is well trained, they will be a jewel to be with when we are too stress out from work. More work place should do the same.

    • Pastor Elena Khong Jean Ai on May 25, 2016 at 10:43 pm

Hi Sock Wan! I agree with you about the pleasures of a well-trained furry friend. Awareness of pet care and responsibility is not very high in Malaysia yet, and this education starts from young. One of the problems is parents buying pets as gifts for their children. First, it teaches their kids that an animal’s life is a commodity that can be readily traded.

Second, if the motivation is to get the pet as a plaything or companion for the child, then the approach is wrong from the outset – there is no sense of responsibility for a plaything and at the point of purchase, you’re doing so with the unconscious assumption that no further care is necessary. But dog or cat or gerbil or whatever isn’t an inanimate doll or toy that can be put to one side once you’re bored with them. Once that reality sets in, that is why we often see animals being abandoned at shelters (if lucky) or the roadside (if not so lucky) because the parents didn’t factor in the time taken to properly care for their new furry friend.

If Malaysians are educated into pet care, they will find that a furry friend can give us years of love if we train them well!

  8. Julien Roth on Apr 20, 2016 at 2:18 am

I love what these people have done with their office! Absolutely love it! So nice of them and very thoughtful. I find that not only does it make the environment more friendly and attractive for their dogs, but it also gives more life to the office area. I can imagine that most office areas are dull and rather boring, so by doing something like this is really lights up the space and gives a cozy creative feel to the workplace 🙂

And obviously the best part about this is that it is friendly for their dogs. Dogs are known to be mens best friend and they deserve the treatment of a best friend. I already love how these people want to take their dogs to work with them, so it actually only makes sense to make the environment better for their dogs. Their business is also based around dogs so im sure this would increase their publicity and image as a brand or business. It benefits them and the dogs around them. Excellent!

  9. Joy on Apr 12, 2016 at 5:56 pm

Oh wow this is so cool and creative and great office! I wish we can have this in Malaysia. However the pet owner must be just as mature and responsible for their dogs otherwise having such amenities does not help but could create more mess. So although I love the idea, I would love it better when dog owner really take responsibility and real care for their babies… yes because our pets are just like our children. They are not toys and not to be pushed or dump on to someone to take care when you are “busy”. Hence although I myself is an animal lover, because of my work schedule, I make a decision not to have my own pets because I know I cannot give them that time and care as I would like to.

In the end it is the pets that suffer which I think isn’t fair at all. Most people have pets for their own selfish reasons – to keep them company because they are lonely… I know a few. So I hope more awareness is created and educated to pet owners, that our pets are like our children is being instilled in pet owners.

  10. Pastor Moh Mei on Apr 8, 2016 at 2:01 am

I’m happy to hear that people are creating these dog friendly office spaces but I don’t necessarily agree it is a fair workplace. I am all against animal abuse but a workplace has to be fair to all. There are people who do not like dogs. So are we going to start discriminating people who doesn’t like dogs? If you can bring dogs to work then what about other pets like cats and fish, etc. What about bringing children to work?

Does it really create a more productive work environment or more distraction? I’m sure dog lovers will be over the moon about this but I still think we should keep work place as work place and personal interest separate.

  11. Pastor Shin on Mar 27, 2016 at 12:09 am

A 2015 Society for Human Resource Management survey found 8 percent of American workplaces allow employees to bring their furry loved ones to work, and up from 5 percent in 2013. These companies include Amazon, Etsy, Google, Bissell, Clif Bar, Petco and etc.

Some companies have dog owner play groups and offer pooch play areas, pet gates in cubicles, and a few provide free pet training, pet walkers, off-site pet sitters as well as pet pampering services such as grooming and dog spas.

It was reported that the millennial segment (18- to-34-year-olds) tends to look at their pets “as practice families or substitute families”, instead of “just a pet”. Nowadays, companies have to invest in employees’ lives beyond their workstations and a decent salary. Some employers shared that employees who are allowed to bring their pets to work are more focused, more comfortable at the office willing to work longer hours.

It is nice to have a dog/pet-friendly office. I am sure if we ask around, many would be enthusiastic, but there will be some who would find it uncomfortable to work alongside certain animals, and there is also possible complications: people with allergies. As such, it is wise to look into how best to develop dog-in-the-workplace policy before we copy and implement other people’s ideas without proper planning.

  12. Beatrix Ooi on Mar 22, 2016 at 3:44 pm

This is really cute, I hope more offices, companies and public places around the world will soon follow their footsteps and change their policies. It takes people with a huge passion towards animals to build this, I personally think that its not easy because it requires love, carefulness and safety precautions in order to make sure that the environment is dog-friendly so they don’t get hurt. I’m very happy to see this because pets are just like our family members and its not safe to leave them alone at home when we go to work.

This reminds me of a video I watched recently, filmed in the Oracle offices in Japan. A dog by the name of Heidi has been roaming their halls for the last 10 years (or was it 12?) so that the workers can pet her, give her treats, etc. They have found that Heidi’s presence helped to reduce workplace related stress and boost productivity. The film was done because Heidi was retiring and being replaced by another dog. If a company like Oracle in a country that’s as advanced as Japan sees the merit in having a dog roaming the halls to boost job performance, what’s the rest of the world waiting for!

  15. Sarah Yap on Mar 8, 2016 at 4:09 am

Incredible! Absolutely love the idea of a dog friendly office.

  16. Jutika Lam on Mar 6, 2016 at 10:15 pm

This idea of a dog friendly office is a really good idea!

It is great to see the owners of Kurgo give plenty of attention to their furry four pawed pals!

More offices should be designed in such a concept that it would be pet friendly, offices are the places where the environment can be a bit stressful sometimes but with pets around, staff can always take some time off and just let of some steam by cuddling or playing with the pets!

  17. JP on Mar 6, 2016 at 9:50 pm

Thank you Pastor Seng Piow for the article. It’s very thoughtful of the company to allow their staff to bring pets in to the office. Dogs are like a 3 year old kid. If left alone for a while, they will get depressed and unhappy. If you ever have a pet dog, you’ll know what I mean.

Most of them love to hang out with their master. They will follow wherever the master goes. So I can imagine how happy the dogs are for being able to go to work with their masters.

For the masters, they also have a peace of mind and would most probably perform better at work because they won’t have the constant worry of their pet dog. This is a win win situation. Thanks for the great story!

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.

Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. May H E Tsem Rinpoche’s sincere advice to reach the far shore of liberation to everyone reading this blog. The most truly generous people are those who give silently without asking any in return. There is no exercise better than reaching and lifting people up. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Well creating and lighting for others we naturally light our own way. Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .
Thank you Rinpoche and team effort making it possible.

I must thank my dharma blog team who are great assets to me, Kechara and growth of dharma in this wonderful region. I am honoured and thrilled to work with them. I really am. Maybe I don't say it enough to them, but I am saying it now. I APPRECIATE THESE GUYS VERY MUCH!

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

In this pic, Pastor Seng Piow is sharing Dharma with newbies ~ Sharyn's friends. It's always good to make light offerings at the beginning of new year. By making light offerings, you are able to dispel the darkness of ignorance and achieve wisdom. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

One the day of Losar (new lunar year), it is always beneficial for Buddhist practitioners to get together in making abundant offerings to Buddhas on the altar to usher in goodness, prosperity and well-being of our loved ones. It's more auspicious this year as Losar and the Chinese New Year begin on the same date, 10th Feb, 2024. Back in Penang, our Kechara members came together to decorate the altar with abundance offerings for Dorje Shugden puja @3pm. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Umze for the day was Siew Hong. She's just been with us for slightly more than a year now but she's proven her capability in leading the puja. Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. When she leads, make sure you are there to hear her chant for yourself! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
