Thank You Ricky Gervais for Spreading the Word

Oct 29, 2016 | Views: 609

Animal cruelty is an ongoing issue which deeply bothers most animal lovers around the world. It is a growing phenomena but most of us prefer not to pay attention to it because it is painful to see yet involves too much effort to change.

Animal lovers can be categorized into two main groups – the first type loves animals but does not get involved in creating awareness against animal cruelty. The other type loves animals AND passionately champions activities that promote awareness against animal cruelty. The latter is what we should do.

I am very happy to see more celebrities using their power of influence to speak up against animal cruelty. I hope this article will inspire more people to practice kindness, to do more for animals as they have no voice of their own, and to transform their lives for the better.

Ricky Gervais Has a Message for People Who Still Wear Fur

As animal lovers, there are many issues that boil our blood when it comes to animal welfare. We can’t believe that there are places around the world that still use bear bile as a form of medicine. We simply can’t wrap our heads around why anyone would prize an ivory trinket over the life of an elephant. And of course, we get enraged when we think of the millions of animals that are killed every single day simply to satiate our appetite for meat and cheese.

When people are passionate about an issue, they usually want to spread as much information and awareness about the topic as possible. They want people to know about the matter from all sorts of different angles and make a knowledgeable opinion about it. After all, someone would be more likely to cut down their meat consumption, for instance, if they knew that not only is meat bad for animals but for the environment and human health, as well, right? Well, as much as we agree with this informed approach, there are alternate ways to raise awareness, nowadays. Some people, especially celebrities, are able to make an impact with just a simple statement. They know that millions of people follow their Twitter or Facebook page, and they use that elevated platform to get to the point quickly and tell people matter-of-factly “you should be caring about this,” or “please don’t do that.”

Ricky Gervais is a big fan of this method of spreading awareness. In fact, just recently he shared a succinct Facebook status that made it pretty simple for people to know where he stands when it comes to wearing real fur.

This method works on a number of levels. It gets to the message quickly and directly: “please don’t buy fur.” It doesn’t overwhelm viewers with a slew of information but instead sticks to the most hard-hitting fact: an animal is kept in a cage for their entire life simply for their fur. And it lets people know how silly it is that someone is buying that jacket just so they can “show off,” when it’s plain to see that this is not something worth bragging about. The fact that you can read the status in a Ricky Gervais accent helps get the message across as well.

By now, most people know how terribly abusive the fur industry is. Animals who are unfortunate enough to end up in this vicious industry are often stolen from the wild, kept in unbearably small cages, and then killed by cruel methods, including gassing and even anal electrocution. And the worst part is, it takes multiple lives to make one garment. Specifically, it takes about 40 rabbits, 70 minks, and up to 100 chinchillas, respectively, to make a fur coat.

While many high-end brands have halted their use of animal fur and skins in response to the public’s disapproval of the practice, there are still companies out there who seem to have no problem continuing with the abuse. Hopefully, as even more awareness spreads and more prominent figures, like Ricky Gervais, stand up in opposition, people will realize that the lives of living, breathing animals are truly not equivalent to the feeling of looking fancy in a fur coat. Thanks for spreading the word, Ricky Gervais!

Fame is very good when it is used to do something beneficial. Celebrities are very influential, they have many followers and fans who look up to them. What the celebrities use, eat or believe in will become a trend among their followers, the followers want to do the same.

Ricky Gervais is a British celebrity who has a lot of followers on his Twitter account. He is an animal lover and he always tweets about animal cruelty to raise awareness. What he says will make an impact for sure. Most importantly, he walks the talk.

He is very against animal cruelty because he doesn’t think animals should suffer because of our vanity. Instead of using his fame to make more money, he uses his fame to do something good to the society, this is very admirable. If more celebrities can be like him, it will be easier and quicker for a movement to be successful.

Ricky Gervais is a great English funny man, and I am thankful he has the courage to say it as it is and not worry about any consequences.

Everyone has different influential level. It is especially helpful when celebrities help to create awareness on animal cruelty as they have the ability to influence their follower to do the same.

Thank you Ricky for your compassionate action.

  6. CindyH on Nov 13, 2016 at 9:05 pm

Indeed, it is better to be one that loves animals and go the extra mile to promote awareness against animal cruelty. Many people tend to agree that the fur trade is an unnecessary cruelty and mostly for vanity reasons.

In fact, if the fur trade was entirely eradicated, it is unlikely to have any significant impact to the world at large, save for a handful of those who make their livelihood snatching animals from the wild, stuffing them in unbearably small, likely very unhygienic cages, and then killing them cruelly with inhumane methods. Yet, undeniably there are still those who are very much attached to the elitist appeal of the garments.

Thus, with more celebrity like Ricky Gervais bluntly painting the real picture and raising awareness, it will definitely serve to dilute the appeal of fur. After all, in the 21st century, celebrities are seen as global icons and even a symbol of power and status with their endorsements or views on things carrying quite significant influence and weight. Hopefully, many more will be inspired to get involved in raising awareness.

Thank you, Rinpoche, for this sharing.

There is a possibility when people who hurt animals may eventually direct violence toward humans. As such, we should support and encourage people to practice kindness towards animals and speak out for the animals.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this nice article and hope more people will get inspired and practice kindness to the animals.

    Thank you Ricky Gervais.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

Celebrity who use their influence to promote positive messages are worth applauding for.

Ricky Gervais instead of showing up at red carpet events with fur to “show-off” his celeb status chooses to create awareness of animal abuse for the fashion industry by spreading it on his social media.

When more influential personnel talks about such issues with genuine intention, the rest will listen.

    Kudos to Ricky.

It is painstakingly sad to see how human had created so much pain and suffering onto animals, therefore we rejoice that some of us are taking steps to rectify and try to undo this wrong. Dear Mr. Gervais

I appreciate that you are bringing awareness about animal suffering just to make a trinket or in the name of fashion. We need more people like you that promote animal welfare and to say stop to all forms of animal cruelty.

People have to understand that animals have feeling and can feel pain like all of us and they are weaker and less intelligent than us. Therefore, we should protect them.

There are celebrities who do things for the attention, but there are celebrities who take their money and fame and use it for a good cause and are completely committed to the causes that are important to them. Whether it’s bringing awareness to millions of fans or opening a foundation to collect funds for a good cause, they are more than just famous – they are animal activists.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article on Ricky Gervais, who speaks out for animal rights, animal testing and encourages animal adoption. May more people be aware of this message and end animal cruelty and abuse.

Great sharing. I love it when celebrities use their fame for a good cause, it tells so much about their personality that’s not just engrossed into themselves but have a capability of thinking more. To me that matters, because how can we just admire someone we only see on the screen without knowing who they really are. When they engage in causes such as these, whether it is caring for animals, orphans etc, it gives us an idea of who they really are. Very nice. Hope to see more celebrities use their fame to inspire and make a difference to the world.

Fur trading is one of the trade that I must said very inhuman, unfortunately despite all these awareness that go around there is still people wearing a this so call expensive fur coat this is something I do not understand especially the rich and famous this is really got to do with their ego mind that anything that is expensive will make me look good i think beside all this awareness that going around the world us good that the local gorverment need to impose a law to find all this illegal hunting on all these innocent animals.

  17. Pavara Lam on Oct 31, 2016 at 10:16 pm

One form of animal cruelty is the fur trade… The fur trade is possibly one of the worse form of animal cruelty since it involves a large number of different animals. What makes it worse is the fact that the rest of the animal parts that are not useful are thrown into the Rivers or seas. So in turn we are harming ourselves indirectly due to the polluted waterways.

I really hope that people will stop buying and demanding for any type of animal related products to save the planet and the respective animals.

  18. William Chua on Oct 31, 2016 at 7:34 pm

A celebrity uses their influence to get the message across. What Ricky is doing is commendable because he is using his fame to do more than to self indulge. He is fighting for animals who can’t speak for themselves and to let the pubic now that it is not ok for animals to be abused and killed for their fur, bile, tusks, skin etc.
We can support him by just retweeting his tweet.

There are many alternatives now to replace fur and skin/leather which are made of plant materials. There are leather made from pineapple, fake fur which have the same effect and vitamins/drugs which can replace bear biles. In fact, modern medicine which uses organic and natural ingredients can be far more nutritious.. We are no longer in the stone age where people wear fur to keep them warm.

It needs a lot of education and people to make a change. We just need to keep on until the war is won, for the animals.

It is always heard warming to see celebrities use their fame for good cause. In this case of Ricky, he uses his name to put across a message to stop animal cruelty.

It is really hard to imagine how miserable is the life of the animal when they are locked up in a cage for their entire life, just so that their skin will be stripped of their body to be used as fur for human being. If we don’t want to be in that situation, then we should not make the animal suffer in that way.

Thank you Ricky for making a strong message!

I am glad more and more celebrity came out to speak up about animal cruelty. When celebrities speak, the impact tend to be there and it reaches out to more people. Thank you Ricky Gervais for highlighting the plight of the poor animals. It is inhumane for people to torture and harm animals out of greed. In this day of world, we have the technology to make synthetic leather/fur for our clothes and don’t have to skin animal alive.

  22. Echeah on Oct 31, 2016 at 12:26 am

I fully respect and admire celebrities who use their fame and influence in a positive way, giving voice to those that are abused and harmed. They speak up for others instead of being indifferent.

Thank you Ricky Gervais for being passionate about stopping animal abuse and speaking up.

I would like also to mention another famous celebrity who is also a strong advocate and activist for animal welfare. He campaigns for the protection of all animals against unnecessary, cruel and degrading treatment; with a particular emphasis on preventing hunting of foxes and the culling of badgers. He is also a staunch supporter of various animal welfare groups and constantly tweets about animal welfare advocacy. He is none other than Dr. Brian May (he’s also an astro-physicist!), lead guitar of my most favourite rock band, Queen.

What is the point of being famous for the sake of being famous? What in the end does one accomplish? When people who have attained fame and fortune begin to give back to society by way of voice, time and resources then only can we say they are truly accomplished.

Millions of animals are brutally killed around world each year just to satisfy our fancy, may it be food, fashion, sports, entertainment & etc. Unfortunately, while some just choose to ignore, many are unaware of what actually happen in the process & how much suffering the animals have gone through to meet our demand before they are finally killed. Arming with this knowledge & using his popularity & huge fans base, celebrity like Ricky Gervais is surely making a great impact on issue like this by creating awareness & spreading message to the world not to partake in animal cruelty for just a piece of coat. In fact, everyone is responsible to do it because all of us are guilty of being the consumer. This brutally & cruelty towards animals is an ongoing issue that can only be ended when the demand stop.

The best way to stop cruelty to animals is to stop eating their meat and buying products that are made from animal parts. We should also check the sources of products that we buy to make sure animal cruelty has not been not involved in their production.

Animal cruelty, an on-going issue and one of the growing phenomena in the World; deeply bothers, if not hurting “animal-lovers” in their painful endeavours to see and to hear! Hearfelt gratefulness to Ricky Gervais for spreading the “word to the World”, so as to aspire more powerful celebrities and true lovers to use their hearfelt influences to speak-up against such cruelties against our “fellow-beings!” This lovely world should have more “compassionate, with oceandeep feelings and true love” people like Ricky Gravais to live in! Thank you hearthily once again for your having such a wonderful heart of compassion and care, for highlighting and spreading the word for the poor animals and their sufferings to the whole wide world, Ricky Gravais!

The only way to stop fur and skin industry and animal related industry is to stop demanding on its by-product.

Celebrities play an influencer role. They are a double edged sword, can bring awareness and cut down on the demand or create more demand for the products. 1 word from a celebrities is more powerful than any lay person. At least his die hard fans might follow his action and his pledge.

Hope that more celebrities will stand out to promote awareness on cruelty of animal related industry and put a stop to the industry.

  28. Joy Kam on Oct 30, 2016 at 1:15 am

I really admire celebrities who really use their fame, name and voice to voice out for those who need it especially the animals who are voiceless. These celebrities are usually the ones we see have some kind of substance. They last longer, and they really use their good fortune to spread more good in this world. So thank you to Ricky Gervais for being blunt and honest, because what he said on social media was spot on.

I hope to see more and more celebrities talk about animals rights because they do play a big part in our society due to the media, in shaping our next generation, and these days we are seeing kids as killers, hunters, murderers of puppies… it is truly becoming more and more degenerate as we become more and more advanced in the materials world.

  29. Vinnie Tan on Oct 29, 2016 at 11:51 pm

Since young, I loved fur. But as I started to grow older and know how these products are being produced, it shows that there is no need to be having things like that at all. By wearing fur, we are skinning another sentient being’s skin in order to make it our accessory.

When as was younger I did believe that fur products are only the skin of the dead animals. However, thinking further it does not make sense at all. As it is impossible for so many animals to die on a daily basis in order to make the fashion wear that matches our demands. Yes, the skin are taken from the dead animals, but these animals were killed for their skin. And it is not that after they are dead from natural causes that we take their skin.

I remember the first video that I watched about the fur industry was the video about the fur industry in China. It was then I saw that these animals were only hit to be unconscious before they were being skinned. Even after some of them were skinned, they still had feelings, were alive and could see them blink as they just lie with the other flayed bodies. It was then I knew the kind of harm that we as humans induce on animals in order to be “happy”. Harming so many others in the process of it.

Synthetic fur is something that is nice and pleasing as well. There can be items that feels like the real thing, yet we do not harm any animals in the process of it. Wearing the skin of animals do not show any form of superiority. It only shows how barbarian we are. Going back to the cave men times when we already have so much advancements in our society. It will be really dumb to do so.

I really hope that one day, farm houses like this will cease business. To do so, we have to stop purchasing these items. We may think that alone we do not make any difference. Yet, when we stop and educate others as well. They too will stop. From there, with more people stopping their urges of fur. The fur industry will close down.

If we truly care , we will speak up against animal cruelty. There is too much senseless abuse of animals and senseless cruelty towards them. Animals have no voice of their own. So we have to speak up for them.

Here, in this blogpost , Ricky Gervais speaks up against animal cruelty in no uncertain terms. He also creates and spreads awareness of this very effectively.

Yes it makes our blood boil just to think that there are people around who insist on having bear bile as their medicine. There are others, who can insanely buy and adorn themselves with trinkets made from ivory for which an elephant has to be killed!.There are of course people who insist on eating meat every day , for which countless animals have to be killed daily, not forgetting crazy people who fancy taking as food animals killed alive for them.

Here ,as an example of how to use social media to spread awareness about animal cruelty ,Ricky has chosen to speak up against the senseless torture and killing of animals for their fur. To be precise, he says, it takes “about 40 rabbits, 70 minks, and up to 100 chinchillas, respectively, to make a fur coat”. Ricky believes in sending a succinct message. Choosing the right and necessary words are important, he says. Too long a message makes it ineffective. People are overwhelmed by too much information in one message. Keep your message to the most hard-hitting fact.

But the bottomline is still the fact that Ricky is a prominent person of celebrity status. Hence,he has so many likes and shares. It is great to know, that he truly cares and has a passion to speak up against animal cruelty, and has a powerful voice for it.

Nonetheless, more and more voices speaking up against animal cruelty and abuse, more and more people being made to see that eating of meat and animal organs or parts, and wearing of animal parts are unnecessary, will surely lead to a steady reduction in animal cruelty and abuse.

Please take a look at these beautiful images of animals rearing their young in the wild. Their love, gentleness and care towards the young is so amazing. So touching. Each photo captured the beauty of the unbreakable bond between a parent and their child. If you’re a parent, you’ll surely appreciate this.

Never hurt animals. Never kill them. Never eat them. Let them be in peace and have happy lives. They have every right to live and without fear just like us. We should always protect their environments also.

Not eating animals is not necessarily a choice for the religious, but a choice of conscience and caring for the environment. Animal farming is contributing very much to the greenhouse effect destroying our atmosphere. Do not contribute to animals being beaten, tied, slaughtered and killed just for us to taste something ‘good’. Fried blood and cooked flesh are not good because it caused pain. Go visit the slaughterhouse weekly. Important. No matter what others say, we must have some principles and not ‘fail’ in everything using others as an excuse. Always be firm in our convictions. I mean principles that protect others from pain. If we are vegetarian, remain so. If we are considering, then research more on the benefits for ourselves, the environment, our planet, our children and the animals. Be firm in helping others and our planet.

It seems that humans aren’t the only ones who need forgiveness.
Bizarre footage has surfaced of a fugitive pig grovelling in front of a temple in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province on Tuesday.
Pictures and video of the bowing boar, which had escaped from a nearby farm, have spread like wildfire on Chinese social media, sparking a flurry of debates over what the animal was doing, reports Sina.
Footage shows the animal kneeling on its forelimbs encircled by worshippers, as a Buddhist ceremony takes place inside the temple.
The saintly swine reportedly stayed put for hours, and only left the scene after a group of monks emerged from inside and chanted a Buddhist scripture towards it.

In S.E Asia, they are still boiling alive, cats and dogs. UN Secretary – General Ban Ki Moon states “We must not fail the billions who look to the international community to fulfill the promise of the Millennium Declaration for a better world.”

A better world? – To create this, stop Chinese and Koreans from deliberatly torturing animals for Dog Torture Soup! The torture for satisfaction, food and money. It is all on the black market. That is very very very bad.

The Koreans love Dog Torture Soup. Dog torture soup does not belong in a world that recognizes the UN Millennium Goals. Dog torture soup was developed 2,000 years ago by a sick society based in fear, bitterness, anger and resentment. The old resentment is so ingrained now, and projected onto the dogs. We have all seen the photos of dogs boiling alive.

Dogs and cats DO NOT DESERVE the heinous crime of such a painful death. I have burnt myself with boiling water and it REALLY HURTS. Imagine being being boiled alive!!

Winning is not the sole purpose in the things we do. It is the process that counts. The process can make us a better person or worse. It is our choice.

Liu Xiang may not win in the game but how he respected his duty as a sportsman. Even though he was injured but he decided to finish the game. His passion and determination are very admirable.

We have to understand that we may have worked hard for the things that we want but we may not get what we wanted. The most important thing is not if we have gotten what we want but how we have done our best to achieve that. For everything we do in our life, we have to do it wholeheartedly so that we will not regret later.

While Yeti (one of the many names used) has not been sufficiently documented to prove they exist undeniably, many people from all over the world swear by the existence of these elusive beings. Especially in Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan, where legends have it that Yeti were attracted to learned lama, sometimes serving as their guardian or footman. Perhaps it is wise to not acknowledge the existence of Yeti as a way to preserve them, let them do what they do best for a long time to come; instead of trying to prove they exist as it could open doors for unscrupulous businessmen to hunt them down. Thank you for this sharing.

Indeed, choosing a proper new home for the hamsters will be one of the most crucial decision in the whole home-coming ritual for our new members. It has to have good ventilation, good space, easy to clean, comfortable, affordable and also the fact that it has to blend with the rest of the existing furniture and fittings. Personally, I reckon some D.I.Y. element is certainly required and some modification along the way as the hamsters grow (bigger) or the clan expands. Thank you for this sharing.

    Dorje Shugden’s Dice Divination

Divination is one of the ways enlightened beings and Buddhas communicate with ordinary beings. While some highly realised masters such as H.H. Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche and the Mahasiddha Tagpu Pemavajra can perceive the Buddhas directly and receive instructions, teachings and advice from them, most ordinary people cannot. And so divinations is one of the methods by which we can receive the Buddhas’ advice too.

Mongols believed 5th Dalai Lama was someone else

The article is actually an examination of the validity of a terma text which was practised by His Holiness 5th Dalai Lama. But what’s really interesting is that at the beginning of the article, it says that Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was the real 5th Dalai Lama!

Why construct a Dorje Shugden Stupa?

A stupa can be dedicated to a high lama, a Buddha, bodhisattva, deity or Dharma Protector. Stupas stabalise the enviroment, the ethereal beings, humans, animals and any being in the stupa’s vicinity. They are extremely beneficial and everyone in the area will be blessed by their energies. The stupa above is dedicated to Dorje Shugden but this is not the only one to Dorje Shugden. There are many more stupas dedicated to the Dharma Protector all over Tibet.

Why I share Dorje Shugden with others

Manjushri manifested as Dorje Shugden for our particular time for the beings of this era. In that way, he is particularly effective to ‘battle’ our current modern obstacles. If we rely on him all the way, our relationship with him will grow and we will see his positive influence in our lives more and more for sure. Dorje Shugden manifests solely due to great enlightened compassion to help sentient beings, a hallmark of a Buddha.

Bigger and more Buddha statues makes a difference | 为何佛像越大、越多越好

If multiplicity helps to maximise the karmic purification, the question that comes to mind then is, “Why do many great masters and monks of various Buddhist traditions create large Buddha images?” Specifically, Rinpoche asked if there is a difference between circumambulating around a five-foot Buddha statue versus a 500-foot Buddha statue.

Learn of how the size of Buddha statues help in purification: http://bit.ly/BigBuddhaStatue

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche makes offering of khata to Dorje Shugden.
Trijang Rinpoche never gave up his devotion to Dorje Shugden no matter how much Tibetan government in exile pressured him to give up. He stayed loyal inspiring so many of us.

  • What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
