“If the Mongolian pioneer Ophthalmologist, pioneer Doctor of Tuberculosis, Scientist, Honorary Professor of Medical University, Honorary Doctor of Mongolia and Folk Doctor was alive today, she would have been 90 years old by now.

My generation was lucky to have attended lectures and be taught by living legends such as R. Nyamaa, B. Ragchaa, B. Ichinhorloo, Rawdandorj, Gurdorj, Tsognemeh, Ochir, Chuluunbaatar, Sanjmyataw, P. Dolgor, who were the teachers of our teachers. Dr. R. Nyamaa was a lecturer, a teacher of practice in our military therapy class and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. She is highly educated, experienced in life, straightforward and well-dressed. She was an attractive woman and a nice teacher. This is my biography of her.”

~ Dr Luvsanbaldangiin Enhbaatar, PhD.

Dr R. Nyamaa was born on June 15, 1923, in Moscow, Russia. In 1936, she graduated with good grades from the Ulger Jishee primary school, east of present-day University of Ulaanbaatar. Her pictures taken with friends and teachers, such as prominent political party member and academician Daramyn Tomor-Ochir, and renowned director L. Wangan who was executed in 1964, are still kept in her home. While studying in secondary school, Dr Nyamaa also worked as an interpreter from 1938 to 1941. In 1942, she entered the newly established National University of Mongolia, graduated in 1947 from the Faculty of Medicine with excellent grades, and was honoured with a Red Diploma. This moment was captured in a documentary film by the Rector of the University, Bazaryn Shirendew, and G.Tuvaan from the Ministry of Health, who was overseeing the students’ exams.

Dr R. Nyamaa attended the National University of Mongolia, which was newly established in 1942.

Dr R. Nyamaa attended the National University of Mongolia, which was newly established in 1942.

When she was alive, I remember Dr Nyamaa telling me that she was working with only one young Russian doctor. There were many patients requiring medical attention, and she was overwhelmed by the burden. Dr Nyamaa recalled that she was, at the time, the very first doctor of bone tuberculosis.

In 1948, Dr TS. Y. Kamenetsky of Odessa City, Ukraine, joined the Ministry of Health as an ophthalmologist. As there was a need for an ophthalmologist, Dr Nyamaa transferred to the ophthalmology department at the State Central Hospital. One year later, Dr TS. Y. Kamenetsky returned to his hometown and Dr Nyamaa was left in charge of her department.

Although Dr Nyamaa did not give much importance to her being the first bone tuberculosis doctor in Mongolia, as a doctor, I am very curious. It was later written in the book “Fighting Tuberculosis” for the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the TB service that Dr Nyamaa worked as an ophthalmologist in the State Central Hospital from 1948 to 1961. From 1963 to 1995, she served as a lecturer, consultant, dean, head of Department at the Medical Institute, deputy director at the Ministry of Health, and the head of the Mongolian Ophthalmologist’s Society. Dr Nyamaa retired in 1995 but continued to serve as a consultant for the Optometry Department of the First State Medical Centre.

Dr Nyamaa studied in Moscow from 1955 to 1956 for her Bachelor’s degree and continued her postgraduate studies from 1961 to 1963. She also received a scholarship from the Sechenov Institute in Moscow.

Dr Nyamaa started teaching in 1956, even before the ophthalmology faculty was established. Dr Nyamaa was the Dean of the Medical Institute for 10 years and for 28 years, was head of the ophthalmology department from 1963-1991. She taught for over forty years, and in that time, she taught specialist courses to hundreds of students and had trained over sixty doctors as ophthalmologists. She also supervised the research works of Professor E. Sanjaa, P. Tsenpepper and S. Manlai.

About 166 of her students are now oculists, specialist doctors, and doctoral professors. Dr Nyamaa published more than 60 articles in research reports, edited 4 manuals and 4 textbooks for students and doctors. She also edited 5 other books, and her book titled “Eye Illness” has been re-published four times.

Dr Nyamaa introduced many new initiatives and practices in the field of training and treatment, as well as introduced the first semiconductor device to surgical practice. In 1978, Dr. Nyamaa was in the National Committee of Science and Technology at the Mongolian Academy of Sciences and the Mongolian National Association of Innovations Association. In order to maximize the number of surgical operations, a new practice to introduce surgical techniques such as auricoreucineis, deep sclerectomy and sinus trabeculectomy was introduced. In addition to those procedures was a new method of partially implanting eye muscles to the retina for correcting the eye alignment. In 1955, the Cornelius Surgery was launched in the town of Odessa, and in 1956, the first cornea rehabilitation surgery was successfully carried out in Mongolia.

Dr Nyamaa taught her students to perform surgical interventions, such as auxiliary therapy, iriduclear, deep sclerectomy and sinus trabeculectomy. She also introduced the technique of partially implanting straight eye muscles in the retina, and methods used during the retardation of the retina. In 1955, she studied a course on corneal surgery in the Filatov Institute at Odessa City. In 1956, she successfully performed a corneal surgery, and went on to teach her students these surgical procedures.

Dr Nyamaa’s father, Dash Sampilon, was the head of the Buryat Academy, and the Minister of Economy and Trade of Mongolia. In 1937, he was executed under the political repression of the Soviet regime. Dash Sampilon was born in 1891 in Arshaant, a county in Buryat, as the second child of a herder, Sampil Sanjaev. He had an elder brother named Jambal and two younger brothers named Choidog and Sandan. Choidog was shot dead by a Cheka soldier of the Russian People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs, while Sandan escaped from the political repression to Hailgat, China. The children of Jambal, Choidog and Sandan are currently living in three countries: Russia, Mongolia, and China.

In 1908, Dash Sampilon graduated from an agriculture school in Moscow and in 1913, he joined the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in Moscow. There, he studied philosophy, history, politics, social science, ethnography, archaeology and humanology. In 1917, at the age of twenty-six, Dash Sampilon was elected as the representative of the All-Russian Peasant Conference. At the end of 1917, as the leader of the Buryat National Committee in Irkutsk, Dash Sampilon was elected a member of the Buryat-Kalmyk Committee in St. Petersburg.

Dash Sampilon was an agronomist and the leader of the Burmese-Mongolian department. Between 1921 to 1926, he worked as Ambassador of Mongolia in Moscow, and in 1925, he was also the Mongolian Minister of Trade in west Europe. He travelled to Berlin, Paris, London, Brussels, Prague, and Vienna, and was interviewed about Mongolia for a news article. He promoted a new, independent Mongolia to the world, and imported cars, equipment, and consumer goods from developed countries into Mongolia.

At that time, with Germany’s aid and assistance, a brickworks factory, a small power station, and an iron manufacturing plant were built in Mongolia. The 500 kilowatt-power plant purchased from AEG was the first in Mongolia. German specialists were invited, including a geological expedition.

In 1925, the Mongolian Trade Representative, headed by Dash Sampilon. arrived in Germany on the initiative of the German Ambassador Brockport-Ranau in Moscow. While negotiations on the establishment of the Mongolian Consulate in Berlin were still ongoing, the representatives were overwhelmed by the warmth and supportive actions of the Germans. German engineer Fritz Watson was invited by the Government of Mongolia to write a highly valued article about the Foreign Economic Conditions of Mongolia in 1928.

In 1926, the first 25 Mongolian children were sent to study in Germany, where they lived in five cities, including Leipzig and Berlin. They were able to live in the homes of host families to study at secondary schools, and trade and vocational colleges. The payments were made by the Government of Mongolia, and the Mongolian student administration in France and Germany was headed by Ishdorj. The main role of monitoring Mongolian students studying in France and Germany from 1928-1929 fell on the Minister of the Economy and Trade of Mongolia, Dash Sampilon and Erdenebatkhaan, the Minister of Education.

In 1929, Dash Sampilon was accused of opposing trade with the Federation of Russia. Nyamaa was just six years old and Indra was one when their father was arrested from their home in Ulaanbaatar and sentenced to 10 years in prison at the Solovski prison camp in Siberia. During his arrest, Dash Sampilon entrusted his wife and two children to Byambyn Rinchen, his student and partner who was living with them, as he knew that he would not see his family again.

During his detention, Dash Sampilon served as the assistant business owner in the White Sea Channel and lived in Leningrad. On January 8, 1937, he was again imprisoned, and on January 20, 1938, Dash Sampilon was shot in the province of Arkhangels. He was acquitted posthumously in April 12, 1989.

Dash Sampilon left behind an elder daughter, Nyamaa who was born in 1923 in Moscow, and a younger daughter, Indra who was born in 1928. His wife Radna later became the wife of Byambyn Rinchen. A young researcher at the time, Rinchen fulfilled his partner’s last wishes and adopted his two daughters, raising them to become scholars, writers and academicians. Rinchen himself later became a famous scientist, writer, scholar, and academician, as well as a victim of the great repression too.

Robert A. Rupen, a Mongolian researcher from the United States who published the book “Mongols of the Twentieth Century”, mentioned the removal of monarchy brought about positive changes in Buryatia during the spring and summer months of 1917. The Buryat National Committee was established as a major instrument of Buryat’s political expression, which included D. Tseweendorj, Rininoo, Bogdanov, Baradin, Tsikikov and Sopilono.

The Buryat National Committee, which had its headquarters in Chita, promoted national autonomy, which combined Irkutsk and Inner Mongolia Buryats in the fight against the invasion of the Russians. Dash Sampilon, the Buryat National Committee’s representative, made agreements with the Kazakhs of Buryatia, Ataman Semenov, and the Chechens. In October 1917, the Bolsheviks formed the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, which opposed to and lead a revolution against the capitalist Bolsheviks. During the battle between the Bolshevik and Semenov to take over the territory of Buryatia, the Buryat National Committee sided with Semenov over the Bolshevik.

In 1917, during a meeting in Urga, the Central Committee to Build Autonomous Buryatia was established, and in April 23 to 25, the conference of Law on National and Cultural Affairs Office was created based on the National Temporary Committee. The representative of the Buryat National Committee, Dash Sampilon, told the congress that the opposition Buryatia and Kalmyk Committee supported the representative of the Buryat National Committee. In the book “Mongols of the Twentieth Century” by Robert A. Rupen, the definitive role played by Dash Sampilon in the Buryat Kalmyk Committee’s history was to ensure that they had the right to speak in the National Buryat Committee.

In 1976, Serge de Volder, Deputy Chairman of the Mongolian-British Society, wrote a book on the challenge of Mongolia’s education in Europe between 1926 to 1929. In May 1926, 30 men and 5 women went to study in West Europe. In his memoirs, Serge De Volder said: “I was a translator and secretary of the Mongolian delegates and educational teams who visited Germany and France in 1925-1929. They needed a person who was versed in German, Russian and English. My new boss told me that he was called Sampilon, and he had been called Ivan Ivanovich during his stay in Russia (later I came to know his true Mongolian name was Dash). He was a graduate from the agriculture school, and you can tell that he is vigilant, educated and an observant person just by looking at his eyes. He was a good conversationalist. He has wide cheekbones, and fair skin, more like a North European, or someone who has burnt his skin in the sun rather than Asian yellow skin.” It was noted that “At that moment, I met Sampilon’s wife, Radna. She had a little girl, Nyamaa, who spoke a little German.”

Dash Sampilon served as the Minister of Economics and Trade in Mongolia from 1926 to 1929 and together with the Minister of Education, Erdenebatkhaan, played the leading role in Mongolian students studying in Germany and France. These children, who travelled to Germany and France in pursuit of education and European culture, later became famous writers, scientists and geologists, such as N. Navaan-Yunden, Baldany Sodnom, German B. Dorjsuren, author D. Namagd, J. Dugersuren, L. Urtnasan, T. Ayurzana, great writer Dashdorjiyn Natsagdorj, and his wife, Pagadamtham. Tsurikov, a prominent Mongolian educator who was invited to the Institute of Scripture, said “When I worked in Mongolia in 1927, I went to Dash Sampilon. It was a cultivated family and their 5-year old daughter spoke German. Dash said they were speaking German in their home in order for their daughter to practice her German. ” Although, great writer B. Rinchin wasn’t the real father of Nyamaa, I can remember her respecting B. Rinchin as her father.

Dr. R. Nyamaa is a very humble doctor who was a pioneer in a few medical procedures in Mongolia. She was a great teacher who had taught to many budding doctors and professors of medicine. She has an interesting background where her father, Dash Sampilon was a de-facto Prime Minister but he was executed later by the Russians. Her stepfather was famous B- Rinchen, who was also executed in his later years. Interesting read of the Mongolian “aristocrat” and Dr. Nyamaa’s important role in the medical field during its infancy in Mongolia. Thank you for sharing her story with us, Rinpoche.

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Antionette for this detailed sharing,

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.
Quoted Ceasing to do evil, Cultivating the good, Purifying the heart .
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing such a meaningful teachings with folded hands.

Winning the lottery was part of my dreams, I tried so hard to win big but all to no avail, until I came across Dr Lucas online who made my dreams come through and made me win 10 million dollars. I was a logistics manager who lives in Lancaster, S.C. and works about an hour’s drive away, in Charlotte, N.C., I stopped at a store to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket during my lunch break, because Dr Lucas gave me all the assurance that the numbers are not going to fail after I did all he asked me to do. Dr lucas is a powerful Dr that is on a mission to eradicate poverty from people’s lives and i have confirmed that by winning $10 million with the numbers he provided for me, it is my promise to tell the world about my experience with Dr Lucas and that’s what I’m doing now, you can win the lottery fast with the help of Dr Lucas he is tested and trusted Email: Drlucasspelltemple@gmail. com or WhatsApp +234 904 794 3567 he will help you.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.
Thank you Rinpoche and Anila for this sharing.

H E Tsem Rinpoche’s Sungbum project aim to preserve the teachings and practices that have been passed from teacher to disciple in an unbroken line beginning with Lama Tsongkhapa himself . History has taught us the importance of preserving Buddha’s stainless teachings. Its important to preserve and safeguard the Buddhist tradition for future generations.
Tsem Rinpoche is a clear and effective teacher where his stories and teachings are endlessly entertaining and inspiring. The preservation is very much needed. We are so fortunate given a chance to be involved in such a meritorious project .
    Thank you.

Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. All thanks to our Guru bringing this practice to Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong Malaysia.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing for us to understand better.

Wow ,reading all these powerful quotes had me realised much better of giving even I have little. May H E Tsem Rinpoche’s sincere advice to reach the far shore of liberation to everyone reading this blog. The most truly generous people are those who give silently without asking any in return. There is no exercise better than reaching and lifting people up. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Well creating and lighting for others we naturally light our own way. Helping others especially those unfortunate ones, make us feel more positive about our own circumstances.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing all these powerful quotes.

Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .
Thank you Rinpoche and team effort making it possible.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
