You couldn’t guess what this is!

If you just look at the pictures, you wouldn’t be able to guess what this is. I was not able to. I thought it something from a sci-fi movie. What you see in the picture above are covered in delicate silvery scales… sometimes with a shade of green or brown. They produce their own light and dwell at the very depths of the ocean… Depths of up to 600 feet (180 meters) to 4,500 feet (1,370 meters). What you see above is 1 of 45 individual species…

They have large tubular eyes pointing upwards. Everyday, they await for food (plankton or tiny fishes) to fall from above and catch them. They have a short life span of no longer than a year. So many undiscovered species live in the deeps of the ocean that never surface. Still thousands of undiscovered species of life form. Interesting. More people have gone into space than to the bottom of the ocean.

They are called the Hatchetfish. I don’t know about you… but they look familiar. Maybe like human faces in a distorted way?

Dear Rinpoche, these undiscovered creatures are just to magnificent. Some of them evolve until they have transparent body and some have glowing body because in the deep ocean there is no light so they evolve to a state where they are able to generate light from their body.

  2. VInnie Tan on Sep 9, 2013 at 7:36 pm

These deep marine life are definitely very interesting. There are so many fascinating creatures in the world that we have not found. Personally, I do not think that these undiscovered creatures should be discovered by man. This is because when man kind discover something, they would usually do experiments on them, harming them in the end. Either that or they would catch theses creatures to consume them or even use as medications that do not have any use at all.

  3. Jessica Yap on Apr 10, 2013 at 2:40 am

Same here Rinpoche, I wouldn’t have guessed what that was!
Mother Nature is amazing.. There are so many creatures around us that have yet to be discovered. Honestly the hatchet fish kind of scares me. They have such fierce looking eyes and teeth that can cut like a knife..

I don’t really think they look like humans as all. Hehe

I think like the species deep in the ocean, human natures are like that too.. We all have hidden abilities/traits that have yet to be discovered.. It’s within us, we just have to find it.. Just like how we all have Buddha nature within us, it’s just up to us to reveal it..

    Thank you for sharing, Rinpoche!

  4. beatrix ooi on Mar 17, 2013 at 11:42 pm

They have very weird-looking faces. But I think that they are very beautiful because being able to shine in a deep, dark ocean is a very unique thing. I’ve seen them in a movie before, it’s called the Finding Memo.
I believe that there are more creatures like in the oceans awaiting to be explored.
    Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.
    Love, beatrix.

  5. edward ooi on Mar 6, 2013 at 11:18 pm

Dear Rinpoche, these deep ocean creatures are so odd looking and it’s amazing that scientists said that they only discovered 3% of the world’s marine animals and the 3% of the world marine animals equals to 230,000 which is a lot. I hope that more peoples will discovered more weird creatures because I want to look at them.

  6. Lucas Roth on Feb 10, 2013 at 11:57 pm

most creatures that we know of that is underwater is just “the tip of the iceberg”. there are many wonders below the sea, these fishes are indeed on the these magnificent creatures list. it is too bad they only live for about a year.

  8. Joy on Dec 27, 2012 at 12:41 pm

It is amazing to see such weird creatures and that possibly there are more undiscovered species under the deep blue world. Our planet was covered with 90% water so I am not surprise that there are things out there still which we have yet to discover.

This brings a reminder to us that our human life is truly precious as we are able to actually have the complete intact conditions to actually learn Dharma. If we think about it there are more creatures, insects, animals on earth compared to us humans, so where and how are they appearing? Buddhist believe in reincarnations so the thought of most of us going to the lower realms and one of them being an animal realm is definitely most possible.

So it is an apt reminder to me, us all that we truly do not know where we’re heading after we’re dead which can be pretty scary when we think about and most definitely our mind cannot just stop there. So definitely we should at least play it “smart” even if we don’t believe there is a Buddha or a God and do good deeds and have a kind heart.

  9. Milly on Dec 22, 2012 at 11:54 pm

There are countless number of sentient beings. Each species has its own uniqueness. I tend to wonder “WHO” is the creator for all these beings whereby each has its individual look and characteristics. The Hatchetfish looks scary like a distorted human face or some being from another planet. Rebirth as a fish is not any better than rebirths in the animal realm.

  10. Lucas Tan on Nov 7, 2012 at 1:38 pm

Wow didn’t know there were so many types of interesting creatures in the sea. This reminds me of the show Finding Nemo when there dropped down into the dark hole and they faced a fish that had a light bulb.I wonder can there be even larger and weirder fish under the sea that we don’t know of and we never seen before ?

  11. Darren Kechara Paradise on Nov 1, 2012 at 12:32 am

It’s cool that they produce their own light. It’s also scary to know there is thousands of unknown species deep under water.

  12. Girlie OOI on Oct 18, 2012 at 5:15 pm

On first look, they look just like blobs of droppings everywhere. Going through the video, I think they look rather nasty; would not want to end up with one right in front of my nose.

The deep deep ocean is a mysterious world. There are still many parts of the deep world that have not been “conquered” by Man and slowly we are gaining insight into life down there.

  13. Yvonne Yap on Oct 15, 2012 at 10:42 pm

    这世界真的无奇不有,就像这深海里的微生物及动物,都是让人看了!目瞪口呆!它们生长在深海里,黑漆漆的,很自然的它们身上,就长有会发亮的东西,真的太神奇了!

  14. Wah Ying on Oct 6, 2012 at 9:23 pm

We will become arrogant only when we are ignorance, ignorant about our surrounding and beyond. When we learn about how big and great is the world, the universe, then we will only learn to be humble, to push ourself to learn more.

The first impression and after reading the post, I still find the face of the Hatchetfish very similar to a human face that live in horror and suffer a lot… It would be terrible to live and die in that way.

  15. Uncle Eddie on Oct 6, 2012 at 12:52 pm

Yes from the picture in the blog they do look like, “Human faces in a distorted way” with big bulging eyes and a big mouth. Who ever would guess its a Hatchetfish. The world we live in is a real mythical mystery – still filled with thousands of undiscovered species of live forms living below the depths of oceans. What more into the unknown open realms of mysterious space! A million thanks for the sharing Rinpoche.

  16. Wan Wai Meng on Oct 5, 2012 at 10:19 pm

Fabulous our oceans are like another planetary system or universe altogether. Thank you for sharing that there are so many biodiversity underneath in the oceans.

  17. Sheryl KH (JB) on Oct 5, 2012 at 1:24 am

When I see this picture from Rinpoche’s blog main page, they look like some kinds of African arts piece. When I look at the picture closer by getting into this blog post , I could guess that these are fishes.

Oh yes, there are far more species in this world that we human dont know. So much to discover and we have much more to be amazed!!

  18. patsy on Oct 4, 2012 at 6:37 pm

This is an amazing video. It is interesting to know that there are so many different fishes and creatures in the deep blue sea. They look nice though but it is so sad to see that due to their karma they took rebirth in this situation; cold, dark, lonely, fighting for survival and never able to hear a word of dharma. We are very
fortunate to be born as human, to be near the dharma and we should not waste this golden opportunity to pursue our spiritual path.

  19. Carmen Lin on Oct 4, 2012 at 3:53 pm

I think I’ve seen some of it in ‘Finding Nemo’ though I’d like to see more of these creatures, and I find it funny that people are attracted to outer space and aliens rather than the ocean creatures. Is people more afraid of depth rather than height? They appeared to me distorted yet I think it’s interesting to study them more. Fabulous, thanks for sharing Rinpoche 🙂

  20. James Long on Oct 3, 2012 at 6:15 am

It is very interesting to see all these fishes and creatures which are quite alien to us. Buddha had said there are countless of being in just a cup of water.

Another thought that came in to my mind is that, what will cause us to take rebirth into this kind of place where you can hardly see sunlight and whole life will be just hunting and eating… I think must be very lonely in the ocean and is there anyway and how long for these creatures to be able to practice and be liberated from samsara?

We are so lucky to be in a human form, and be close to Dharma. Don’t you think so?

  21. Jace Chong on Oct 2, 2012 at 12:39 am

  22. Siong Woan on Oct 1, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Wow the Hatchefish looks like dry-fish with their mouth open.. It is kind of cool to know there so many different beings sharing our beautiful world.

  23. william on Sep 30, 2012 at 5:11 pm

Interesting to see all the weird animals that we have in this world especially deep in the ocean where no one can see. Would the karma of these animals be so bad that they are reborn in such a situation? I cannot imagine life in a deep dark place wondering around and never have the chance to meet with Dharma.

  24. May Ong on Sep 30, 2012 at 8:08 am

I was just talking to someone this week that if we think deeper, human beings do have resemblances of many of the animal behavior we observed. The world is really a ‘zoo’ and I find that it is a reflection of ourselves, good and bad habits and behavior from action. When we study animals on how they look, like what Rinpoche says here,”but they look familiar. Maybe like human faces in a distorted way?”

    • David Lai on Sep 30, 2012 at 2:12 pm

      Dear May,
Animals and humans mate and procreate, they have to hunt for their food and we have to go to work to put food on the table and provide for the family. The only difference is that humans have higher intelligence to think higher and do something more with our lives to benefit others and animals simply don’t have the intelligence for this. The only thing is how many of us seize this opportunity to do more with it so we don’t create even more causes to take rebirth as animals.

  25. Sofi on Sep 30, 2012 at 4:09 am

Wow, very interesting marine animals. I believe that many more have yet to be discovered, not to mention earthbound ones. If human population is inceeasing, does that mean that more sentient beings have the opportunity to gain greater chance of being enlightenned? Hmmm…..
Thanks Rinpoche for this amazing deep sea animals videos.

Over the years many people of various informal settlements have been persecuted. Persecution is serious, targeted mistreatment of an individual because of who they are, or what they do, what they believe, or what people think they are, do, or believe. The Jewish were often criticized and persecuted throughout in Europe. They were subjected to progressively harsher persecution due to their race and religion. Reading the comparison to the discrimination against Dorje Shugden practitioners are quite similar traits to the Jewish even though they are world a parts. May everyone have religious freedom to choose and be respected by others. No one has the right to discriminate others due to their beliefs and faith.
May all forms of religious persecution and discrimination which include the Dorje Shugden ban against practitioners be lifted soon.
Thank you Pastor David and Pastor Niral for this article.

Miyolangsangma is the Tibetan Buddhist goddess who lives at the top of Chomolungma . Many climbers of Chomolungma beseech her favour at the traditional stupa in which a Buddhist monk prays for them and they go through certain ceremonies. Sherpas share a rather straightforward motivation: Mountaineering is their livelihood, and they do it to support their families. Miyolangsangma, also known as the “Goddess of Inexhaustible Giving.” The mountain is seem to be her palace and playground, and Sherpas view climbers and themselves as only partially welcome guests, all of them having arrived without invitation. It is this goddess’s power, one Sherpa Buddhist monk said, that has willingness delivered to the Sherpas for their effort guiding expeditions and foreign travellers, to climb to the peak of the world highest mountain.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Elena Khong Jean Ai for this wonderful article of the Tibetan Buddhist goddess which I first time coming across.

How to Bless Buddha Images Yourself

While there are traditional methods of blessing and consecrating statues, known as soongdroop and rabney, not everyone has the merit to live near a Dharma centre or monastery, or has access to these services. For this reason, Tsem Rinpoche has compassionately outlined three methods by which anyone can bless Buddha statues.

The “One God” Theory Comes from Greek Mythology documentary.

This is a very interesting documentary of how the one-god theory arose from ancients times. This theory was not the domain of established modern religions but were already existent in pre-modern or pagan religions. This video shows how the one god theory is not the exclusive rights of anyone but in fact was a gradual process taken from Pagan religions. So what we might pre-suppose as modern (non-paganistic) or exclusive of modern religions may not be the case. EXTREMELY INTERESTING.

Please watch this intriguing documentary. But do concentrate and contemplate. It will be helpful for your religious studies. The one god theory may not be all that it is what we are told.

Carlos Castaneda was an American New Age author and a scholar of anthropology — the study of human behaviour and societies. He wrote a series of popular books that described his training and magical experiences in Toltec Shamanism under the guidance of Don Juan Matus, a native Yaqui shaman who lived in Mexico.

Castaneda’s writings brought him fame as well as controversy. His proponents and critics would debate as to whether his writings were the results of authentic experiences or an overactive imagination. Yet, despite the controversy, his expressive and evocative writing as well as the mysticism that surrounded his persona inspired widespread appreciation for Native American culture and earned him the title of “Godfather of the New Age Movement.”

The Jewish people have been persecuted throughout recorded history, from their beginnings in the Middle East, through Europe during the Middle Ages, the Holocaust of the World Wars and into the modern era due to their race and religion. This persecution of a community has been sustained due to religious discrimination. We wanted to provide all of you with just a quick overview of what the Jewish people have been through. We hope you can learn from this, and understand the atrocities that religious persecution can lead to.

From time to time we will hear stories about children saying they see things or they are talking or playing with someone that obviously is not visible. We will always ask them to stop talking about it and brush them off. It is said that because children are purer, they are able to see things that we cannot see. Some of them are born with the third eye so they have the ability to see the unseen. We should teach them how to recite mantras and avoid establishing a close connection with them because we do not know if these beings are harmful. Or we can bring the child to a Buddhist master to get some blessings to protect them from harmful entities.

Have you heard of the goddess Miyolangsangma before? She is also known as the Goddess of Inexhaustible Giving. Both Sherpas and Tibetans also believe that Mount Everest is the abode of the goddess Jomo Miyolangsangma. Miyolangsangma is one of the Five Long-life Sisters. Her abode is said to be at the summit of Mount Everest, known in Tibetan as Jomolungma (Goddess Mother of Mountains), and she is the resident goddess of Mount Everest and the Khumbu area in general. She is depicted riding on a tiger. Read more about what her function is and her importance in the Sherpas belief.

Thank you so much for this article. It is true that each Dalai Lama is a unique individual, they have been philosophers, builders and even poets, and as each is revered as a Bodhisattva who possess great mystical powers and can incarnate life after life.

The Dalai Lama is one of the world’s revered religious leaders, but that didn’t prevent four holders of the office from mysteriously dying. An autopsy proved inconclusive, but, for Yan, the identity of the murderers was obvious where the the twelfth Dalai Lama and his three predecessors were all “victims of the power struggles between the big clerical and lay serf-owners in Tibet.” .

Thank you so much for this article. By reading this article, i get to know that the term ‘Jewish’ is applied to an ethno-religious group of people that practise Judaism. This means that it encompasses both an ethnicity and a religion at the same time.

The majority of the Jewish people around the world descend from two distinct groups coming from Europe. In fact due to the religious pluralism prevalent in India, the Jewish population have lived in relative peace and harmony, allowing the adherence to their faith without much opposition. Thank you.

Statistically, video games are now the most popular and profitable form of entertainment. For me , there’s always side effect on video games. I have seen many kids that have addicted to it and neglected their studies. One of the most detrimental effects of playing violent video games is increased aggression in children. A video game addiction can be harmful if the kids is unable to participate in any interests or extracurricular activities in schools. But by close supervision by parents I personally thinks playing video games is alright. Or else there will be many problems such as health, poor performance in their studies, increased in metal aggression and might suffered in relationships.
The effects of playing video games are both positive and negative. When playing violent video games too much, it can leads to and increased aggressive behaviour as over time. Even some scientists has claim violent video games, have an adverse effect on young people.
Over all conclusion, I would said that violent video games is harmful to society especially the younger ones. I have read in papers that it had cause death to those addicted ones.
Thank you Rinpoche and Wei Tan for this sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

    2 yearss ago
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Reciting prayers, meditation and concentration on powerful Manjushri Dorje Shugden at Kechara Forest Retreat. This is to remove obstacles for success in our lives. Pastor Gim Lee of Kechara House is guiding the retreatants.
Earlier this month, five members from our Puja House engaged in a Dorje Shugden retreat, spending three days in Kechara Forest Retreat strongly focused on Dorje Shugden whilst reciting 185,000 of his mantra. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to create a closer connection with this enlightened Dharma Protector, as H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche shares. If you would like more information about how you too can engage in retreats at Kechara Forest Retreat, please direct your enquiries to our friendly Front Desk team (care@kechara.com or +603 7803 3908).

Our food bank distribution activities throughout the #HariRaya week. Couldn\'t thank the volunteers and everyone from Tesco Malaysia and AEON Retail Malaysia for the great cooperation to help make sure everything is ok on the supplying side. Their professionalism is second to none and that enabled our team to collect and disseminate the food in an orderly manner. #KecharaFoodBank #foodbank #HungerKnowsNoBarriers #Perak #Volunteers - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen
