Pigs in Taiwan

Jul 21, 2011 | Views: 1,725

Death is a very scary thought for most of us. It is, more often than not, the pain and suffering associated with death that scares us… especially if it involves being killed by someone else.

So, why would we wish to inflict the same on others?

Given that we slaughter animals for food, many feel that the most “humane” thing to do is to make sure that it is done in a quick and painless way. This killing of animals, no matter how humanely we try to do it, is something I disagree with. Furthermore, most animals slaughtered for food are terribly tortured before they die.

If you watch the video, you will see that the pigs are hung upside down in order to maximize blood drain, adding unnecessary agony before they are slaughtered. An iron hook will be used to forcibly hook the pigs’ head up by the jaw if they don’t stretch out their necks.

All of these add to the agony and pain of the pigs before they die. No being should ever be made to undergo such torture…

It is absolutely HORRIFYING the way the pigs are slaughtered. Some of the pigs are just stabbed and left squirming on the floor in pain while they bleed slowly to death in full view of other pigs. Since pigs are social animals like us, they would undoubtedly undergo untold horror when seeing their own kind being killed as well.

It is important to know where the meat that we eat comes from, and how it is obtained. For every piece of meat, something needs to be killed.

If we find it difficult to see how it is obtained, then maybe we should do something about it. When we consume meat, we are endorsing these killings worldwide directly. The only reason slaughterhouses exist, is to feed the growing demand – more will be killed.

Don’t give them a reason to kill more – stop consuming meat, especially when you know how they are obtained. No animal wants to die willingly, who does??? Please be kind to animals. Please do not eat them. Please never harm them…no matter what.

The way the pigs are slaughtered are so cruel. It is not true to say animals do not have feelings or emotions like us. The pigs are all screaming in fear when they are in the slaughter house. They know something bad is going to happen to them.

Killing a life is not right. But if this is necessary, at least do it the humane way to reduce the suffering of the animal. Just imagine the fear in the pigs before they are killed.

No one wants to die, including the animals. In the video, the animals are trying to run away but they could not. They want to live but they are not given the chance. Whenever possible, eat vegetarian so we don’t support killing.

It’s a heartfelt watching the video of how pigs are slaughtered . Sad can imagine the pig suffering, so much of agony and pain before the hour of death. No living beings will choose to die with so much suffering. Hopefully more people are aware of these slaughtering and stop consuming meat go on vegetarian to cut down the killings.
    Be kind to them .
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article to create more awareness.

  3. Anne Ong on Jun 6, 2017 at 9:47 pm

This is very scary and pityful when we see it. Because of our usual ignorance we prefer not to even think about it before we eat meat that was being slaughtered. As I have slowly cut down my intake of meat with my parents because of awareness,I also hope more and more people would be aware of this and comsume less meat. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article to create more awareness.

Its scary how they kill the pigs, they treat the pigs as if they do not feel anything. The people will just kill the pigs with no mercy, no hesitation. Poor pigs, such a horrible process that they have to go through before they bleed to death…

  5. Grace Leu (KHJB) on Feb 10, 2014 at 6:14 pm

Thank you Rinpoche’s sharing, may they stop the killing, all animals are equal . nobody like to be torture .

I am so against animal slaughter, it is so cruel how people can be to animals. I am happy i am a vegetarian and it feels good! thank you for sharing Rinpoche.

  7. Edward Ooi on Jan 3, 2014 at 11:19 pm

Dear Rinpoche, I really don’t understand how can the workers bare seeing and slaughtering these poor animals without feeling guiltiness. Killing animals is already wrong and slaughtering animals is the worst. If this action doesn’t stop now, more lives will be taken and we will never find peace in this world.

this is horrible!! i hate animal slaughter and animal cruelty! i hope one day every thing will be vegetarian and if not one day in the far future i hope scientists invent vegetarian meat so that they don’t have to kill anything.

  10. Julien Roth on Nov 28, 2012 at 9:26 pm

To me, the worst method of killing the pigs, was the electric stunning. I just really did not like seeing the pigs face when it got killed. It looked so painful. And i couldn’t bare to watch the whole video because it was so painful to watch.

  11. beatrix ooi on Nov 19, 2012 at 6:22 pm

It’s very horrible to see animals being slaughtered. You will see them struggle, cry in the process. Just because they can’t speak doesn’t mean that they r not hurt. People should stop hurting these innocent lives now.
    Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.
    Love, beatrix.

  12. edward ooi on Oct 31, 2012 at 9:22 pm

Any animal should not being slaughter or killed in that way.I don’t get why people want to eat meat. If they are living in high mountains, i can understand why must they eat meat. But most of the pupils eat meat for enjoyment. I WISH THAT ANIMALS WON’T BE KILLED OR SLAUGHTER ANYMORE.

Om Mane Peme Hum, most of us know the benefits of liberation but we only do once a year, once a month or even less.

Actually we can do liberation in a very simple way, if we not eat meat or eat less so we create the cause of no hurt or less hurt to the animals. So that we a doing daily liberation if we are vegetarian.

I can’t bring myself to watch. Its really heart breaking to hear them squeal so loud from the pain and torture. I told my mum its all the same in almost every country but she is in denial. I walked pass the market that and I almost vomited because of the smell. Since young, I rarely eat pork and chicken because of the taste. No more.

  16. Vaiwa veg on Aug 2, 2011 at 3:14 am

It’s just because people don’t realize what cruel meat industry is, or (most of them) just don’t know. their parents, grandparents, grandgrandparents eat meat, they learn it’s ok do to this from childhood. In acient times, it would have been impossible to survive without eating meat. But nowadays it’s more than easy. So i think it’s important to tell friends, relative, anyone about this cruel reality and also about alternatives for getting required nutrients. If u tell ppl in a friendly way, vegetarianism-veganism spreads like virus 🙂 more and more ppl choose to be veg ^^

  18. dhammarja on Jul 31, 2011 at 6:16 am

what do buddhist today do to stop kill animals in law????

the animal killing are spread, even when such horrbile festival happend like hajj in islam, and christmas in christianity etc.. the buddhist are greeting these foolish religions on massacring festivals!!!!!!

after all this, how would we want to stop kill animals!!!! when we do nothing to stop it!!!!!

Not enough words to express the feelings I have when I see something like this. Pigs and also thousands, well millions of sheep during Hajj and Big Eid in the Muslim holiday, such a cruel holiday.I always think of God,as a God of compassion and peace, not as a blood-thirsty cruel God that would order the murdering of millions of innocent.

  20. Camille policano on Jul 24, 2011 at 8:06 am

The opinions stated pertaining to inhumane treatment of animals for food ALL present fabulous angles and or suggestion/ reasons to stop such cruelty. Unfortunately the problem goes way beyond an alternative food source or any campaign no matter how convincing. The problem is mans sinful nature. From birth it’s inevitable that sin is woven into the fibers of our being making it almost impossible for us to make such morally correct steps on a global scale. Whether you support PETA or the SPCA your NEVER goin to stop the gluttonous apathetic trolls that make up the majority of the earths population. I’ve spent many lost moments pondering why we carelessly crucify other living creatures to fill our already bloated bellys. And Im sorry to admit its all part of the great Controversy of good and evil…. It’s just part of the pieces to the puzzle that no one will finish until our creator deems necessary… This is not a bible thumping blog… This is the sobering truth… And if u don’t believe in sin or for that matter righteousness then I suppose u can chalk it up to “the big bang theory” or survival of the fittest but I’m here to tell you…. The change starts with you. If u don’t want to be a part of this sick chain of events then don’t eat meat; of course supply and demmand play a part but to think we will change the red blooded human “hog” that was raised to see livestock as cash I have very sad news my friends, it’s never gonna end. So end if for urself and know that you did what’s right. The only thing you can ever really save is your soul. You stop the supply and demmand and know you did your part. That’s much more than the conquering the masses it’s the evolution of the elite…..and when you choose to make the change within u no longer need change the world. Just decide you no longer follow the sheep and the burden is left up to those that do. Namaste.

    • Lettie on Jul 24, 2011 at 11:11 am

Unfortunately, I find myself with a belly full of glutton yet, after reading the above………..I am so inspired that at least one human knows exactly what in ‘this hell’ is happening! ‘Camille’ must be an eloquent angel that mistakenly landed on the wrong side of this “great controversy”! If only 1/3 of the planet had 1/2 of her insight, we might just ‘God Speed’ this puzzle right along to the very last ‘Advent’! I think I just became a vegetarian…not because of the absolute disgustingly way my ‘crispy beef’ got onto my plate this evening (because I think 90% of ‘due process’ is disgusting!) but because she is so right about the fact that being a part of an elite evolution does (and MUST) begin within oneself! As the puzzle pieces swirl around this galaxy, in such a finite fury…I hope she doesn’t mind if my jagged ‘lil edge find a notch into one of her smooth corners! I too want to be a part of that final picture of the purest “Namaste”…..one piece at a time. Thanks for the light, sister 😉

Camille I agree it is very brutal the human treatment of aniamls , life can be a viscious cycle. and humans can be very brutal to each other as wel as other species. On the other hand If you truly believe in god an his infinite wisdom then you must admit that our species is one of many here on earth that feed on other living creature ( Meat hun) sharks , lions , tigers ,bears , eagles , it is basic nature ..is a cat sinning when it pouncing on a lil mouse andeats it , is a pride of lions sinning when the trap , kill and rip apart a small gazelle..I think not. there are 2 sides hun. Most species commit acts of brutality but most species do amazing and wonderful things too. that same brutal female lioness loves and care for her 3 cubs , playing with them and teaching them but most importantly preparing her cubs as best she can for the sometimes brutal life cycle that waits for them. Camille I dont think eating meat is a sin hun because so many of gods creations do it, including humans , and yes the way we treat live stock is brutal but there are so many humans so so many to feed . I can understand some of your feelings but to be honest I just wish mankind would learn to stop it’s never ending brutality towards it’s own kind. you see most species feed on others thats just nature , but our species for some reason is plagued by lust , power , greed , and war .

It is just so horrible how much pain they endure and pigs are very inteligent animals- actually the smartest domestic animal in the world.Have a look, very interesting facts:

“Intelligence research was done with pigs in the 1990s. One of the experiments was to train the pigs to move the cursor on a video screen with their snouts. When the pigs used the cursors again, they were able to distinguish between the scribbles they already knew, and the scribbles they were seeing for the first time. The pigs learned this skill as fast as the chimpanzees.

All species of pig are smarter than dogs, and capable of abstract representation. “They can hold an icon in their mind, and remember it at a later date,” says Professor Stanley Curtis of Penn State University, who discovered that pigs dominate at video games with joy sticks. Curtis goes on to say, “Pigs are able to focus with an intensity I have never seen in a chimp.”

Other tests were done where the pigs were taught the meaning of simple words and phrases. Several years later, the instructions were repeated, and the pigs still remembered what to do. The same thing was done with different objects placed in front of them. They were taught to jump over, sit by, or retrieve the item. Three years later, they could distinguish between the items.

    The studies also showed:

•Pigs lead complex social lives that behaviorists once believed to be true only of primates.
•Mother pigs sing to their piglets while they are nursing.
•They excel at video games that would be hard for a young child, and sometimes better than the primates.
    •Pigs dream.
•Pigs have a good sense of direction, and can find their way home from long distances.
•They learn from watching one another.
•Pigs outsmart each other. One will often follow another pig to food before grabbing it away from him, and the pig who was tricked will change behaviors to reduce how many times it is tricked.”

So, smarter than dogs! No wonder George Clooney had a pig pet:)

It is really sad and I really really feel the pain for those animals and because our own greed and karma we crave for meat and these poor animals have to die for us consumption and the negative karma of those working in the slaughter house. May you quickly find other jobs that free them from slaughtering and collecting negative karma.

  23. David Lai on Jul 22, 2011 at 3:03 pm

There is two things that come to my mind when I watch this. These videos are great ways to educate people on how animals suffer before they become our meals. However, I think no amount of campaigning can do real change to people’s eating habits.

Hence, I think companies and people should look into replicating meat like how the Chinese replicate the texture of meat with soya products. So far, Chinese cuisine can only go so far. Perhaps genetic engineering can replicate meat without cloning the animal. Hence, no animal or sentient being needs to suffer for out meals.

    • ST on Jul 23, 2011 at 1:22 am

      David,

No one would disagree that habit dies hard.

Problem with meat eating is that it has been entrenched into human eating habits since pre-historic time. To reverse this by any measure requires an effort no less than that to tackle climate change. Those who are in the trade of supply meat to the market would be the first to oppose any actions that goes against the grain.

Campaigns and sanctions are too soft measures to make much diffence. Meat replication and genetic engineering takes too long and could fall into the ‘too hard’ basket for whoever the initiators are.

That’s only one possible thing left – let karma take its course. I do not wish it to happen but a world wide epidemic of animal disease that gives the animal themselves immunity against the disease but is threatening to human life if systemically consumed. This protects the animals and stops people eating them.

The epidemics that had happened intermittently in the past could well be a sign of worse to come. It’s common sense and a matter of mathematical probability – the more animals we kill, the higher the chance of natural imbalance.

  24. ST on Jul 22, 2011 at 12:24 am

Time to form an International Amnesty for Animal Genocide & Cruelty. Don’t think it is possible to get to the root of the problem as not everyone in the world will go vegetarian if there is no positive action other than campaign.

Dogs or cats provide us with a sense of emotional wellbeing. They give us unconditional love, which is why they’re also great company and comfort for people who live alone. Having one companion make us happier and healthier. It is important to take care and protect them from harm. But when the owner passed away or old , it best to have a home or shelter for them till their passing. It would be wonderful to have such a place 24 hour clinics for pets like those in Japan. In Japan ,Non-profit organizations are working tirelessly to protect animals and to find new homes for those left by their passing owners. With these homes at least those cats or dogs have a home , love and taking care of. Wish we had this here in Malaysia too.

For many years fishermen have been targeting shark fins for their high monetary and cultural value. They are used in a popular dish called shark fin soup, which is a symbol of status in Chinese culture such as weddings and banquets. The continued demand for shark fin soup, dumplings, and other shark fin dishes are served in restaurants. All these resulting in the practice of finning, where an estimated millions of sharks being killed each year for their fins alone. Shark fin soup is a traditional soup usually found in Chinese cuisine. The disappearing of sharks is alarming due to over-fishing scientist has discovered. Sad sooner or later sharks will goes extinct in the oceans. It is wonderful that more people and even our local celebrities have also joined hands to put a stop to shark fin consumption. Their effort paid off and are raising awareness of the campaign against shark fin. Nowadays shark fins soup are taken off the menu in most restaurant. It is critical to reduce demand, when we could change our attitudes not to harm those sharks by consumption the soup and so forth.

Many religions believe in Karma. Karma means a deed or an act. The three major religions that believe in Karma are Sikhism, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

Life is about what you give, not what you get. It’s about putting into daily practice the kinds of things we’ve all heard many times. Do good for others and good may happen to you.

As per the law of karma, every positive deed which we do, generates a merit, while every negative deed results in a demerit or sin which subsequently we need to repay by enduring happiness or unhappiness.

Thanks you for the deeper understanding of karma.

Heartfelt watching this video again, what a royal dog named Mimi was. Could imagined waited on the same spot for her owner who had left her for 8 years. Looks like the owner had intended to leave her there, when shifting house. Its only when the SPCA found Mimi’s owner she was taken back yet not for too long she was left alone again. Sad tale indeed when any one decide to own a dog think twice. A dog is a man best friend yet please don’t leave them at least gave to someone to care . Poor Mimi such a royal dog , sufferings from being left out, abused as stray dog and suffered through all the surgeries because of cancer. SPCA did a good job , thank you for taking care of Mimi.

Wonderful to have established Dorje Shugden chapel at Kathmandu, Nepal ,not only one but two. These will definitely benefit more and more people in long run. Dorje Shugden is a Powerful Protector who is an emanation of Manjushri and fully enlightened being. Dorje Shugden will help us to overcome obstacles and problems regardless of all religion. Being located in one busiest spots where thousands of people will walk past the chapel everyday, be blessed. Thanks to those kind generous sponsors and many others.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Thank you for the interesting article and deep discovering of the beautiful mother nature of Kedah. Besides the historical site, the largest producer of rice in Malaysia, Kedah is a land of peace and tranquility.

The wonderful Kedah holds the most famous attractions in Langkawi Island, the sandy beaches to green forest parks and virgin rainforest on highlands. Kedah too is a great place for a good taste of northern Malaysian culture and the best relaxing vacation destination for nature lovers and the family.

Worth to be on a vegetarian for many reasons such as health , making a positive environmental and ethical impact and saving animals life. For some people, eating vegetarian is a way to be healthier and for others, eating this way has more to do with religion, animal rights, or environmental concerns. Many studies have shown that vegetarians are less likely to get chronic diseases such as heart disease, cholesterol and diabetes. A vegetarian diet reduced the risk for cancer in general I would say that. But what is important basically is not to harm animals, give them a chance to live.
Thank you Rinpoche for this simple meaningful sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

    4 yearss ago
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Underprivileged residents of two PPRs in Kuala Lumpur recently received a total of 427kg from our longterm surplus produce sponsor, Lotuss Stores (formerly Tesco Stores). The 65 families are our regular beneficiaries, and are grateful to receive fresh vegetables on a consistent basis right at their doorstep. One of our recipients, Rajeswari, 52, single mother of 2 children, shared that she stopped receiving welfare aid due to unforeseen circumstances. Her words: "Saya cakap untuk Kechara [Soup Kitchen] banyak terima kasih sebab kasi makanan. Dan lebih mau tolong orang lain yang susah seperti saya". Our heartfelt thank-you goes to Lotuss Stores for being a dependable source of food aid and for #helpingthepoor with us. #kecharafoodbank #makingadifference #kitajagakita #charity #foodbank #bantuan #ngomalaysia #givingback #strongertogether - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

#kecharafoodbank: In collaboration with Good Shepherd Services (GSS) based in Ipoh, we travelled to Buntong with food rations for 33 families. Some of the food items given include rice, noodles, cooking oil and biscuits; in total, we gave 726kg of food to these beneficiaries from the underprivileged class. We are glad to have been able to contribute, especially to families with children and in poor living conditions. We wish to thank GSS for alerting us about those in need, and we look forward to extending more support in the future together with this not-for-profit organization doing good work. - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

In an urgent effort to provide food and necessities to the poverty-stricken in Bentong and rural areas of Pahang, we are launching Food Bank Bentong. With your support, Food Bank Bentong would be able to feed 500 families totaling 2,300 people on a regular basis, giving them a chance to enjoy a basic sense of security we consider a human right. - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

The global pandemic hasn't been easy for all of us. Some find it diffucult to find a job to support the family. Despite that, we are still delivering basic food pack to our recipients nationwide. Thank you to our volunteers, donors, and sponsors. Without your support, we would be unable to reach out to many families. Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

Thanks to the effort of our outstation team, we were able to mobilise food provisions to 600 families living in Kelantan, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor during the Raya period with each of these families receiving RM200 worth of provisions. Adding onto the current 368 families in Klang Valley, a total of 968 families were benefitted from this. Special thanks to the sponsors who have contributed especially Hong Leong Foundation and partially from Tesco Malaysia (where we also ordered the provisions from). ~ Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

More photos taken from our "Hari Raya Hampers" distribution this week. Making sure everyone of our clients have something to be cheerful about. Apart from food, daily used items such as hygiene products, kitchen utensils, assorted fabric items, stationary items and toys were also included into our hamper bags making it extra heavier this month! Food items alone were about 35kg per family! Taking this opportunity to wish everyone of our Muslim volunteers, friends, supporters and clients a Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Maaf Zahir Batin. No doubt this year's celebration will be very different but appreciate everyone is safe and protected from the pandemic. We are in this together and let's work to fight this pandemic together! Thanking all sponsors and donors for the generous support enabling us to continue serve the needy with food, love and care. Big shoutout too to our wonderful team which already depleted by our very own strict SOP. All of you who worked tirelessly behind the s
