You want to be fooled?

Sep 15, 2015 | Views: 1,307

Dear friends around the world,

Food is sustenance. Food can be enjoyment. Food can be symbolic, bonding, a sort of expressing care and also cultural, but one thing food should not be is pain for animals. Last year when I saw the Forgotten Battery Hens video (or watch the video here), I decided to stop eating eggs, although they are one of my favourite foods since I was a child. The video really broke my heart. I was very affected by the Cruel Cage Egg System and decided to create more awareness about the suffering of these poor chickens by organising a Win a Manjushri contest. By creating more awareness, we can stop this cruelty from continuing. Apart from proliferating information and awareness, taking action such as stop consuming eggs is another way to help the situation.

Fortunately, as more and more people choose a lifestyle and diet that does not exploit animals, there are alternatives or replacements that taste as good as the real thing. And it comes without the cholesterol or cruelty. For example, tofu is great for egg substitutions in recipes that call for a lot of eggs, like quiches or custards while having a low calorie count and relatively large amounts of protein. There are also egg substitutes available at health-food stores and some grocery stores for baking or preparing a dish that calls for eggs. Don’t eat these with expectation it is exactly like an egg. Eat these with an open mind and you will be fooled. Your taste buds will be fooled. This time being fooled is good. They are delicious!

I recently came across some vegan egg recipes and I thought of sharing with all of you. Vegan egg dishes contain nothing from a chicken or harms animals. I have tried some of them and you know what, they are delicious! I am putting the recipes here to bring greater awareness to vegan delicious healthy dishes and the wonderful website that hosts many more recipes you should visit. We can get the ingredients with some effort. But the effort is worth it as more adopt a lifestyle that creates less pain for animals.

1. First Proper & Best-Ever Vegan ‘Egg Mayonnaise’ (Egg Salad) Sandwich

INGREDIENTS FOR ‘EGG YOLK’

  • 2 tbsp vegan dried instant mashed potatoes, dehydrated flakes or powder (Edwards USA, Terrasana UK – also here is a link that will ship to Australia)
  • 7 tbsp hot water
  • 1 tsp nutritional yeast
  • ¼ tsp turmeric (use a little less if you prefer)
  • ¼ tsp kala namak salt, otherwise known as black salt – it has a sulphuric “egg” flavour, so is essential for this recipe (you should find this at your local Indian or Asian grocery store
  • ¾ tsp Orgran egg replacer (or Ener-G in the US)
  • 1 tsp vegan margarine

METHOD:
Make up your mashed potato mix, add margarine and other ingredients, and mash until consistency resembles hard-boiled egg yolk, see pic if you are uncertain, it should be thick in consistency. Mix ‘yolk’ mix really well, then place in freezer for 15-20 minutes, then remove from freezer.

NOTE:
The ratio of water/liquid versus the potato flakes or powder that you find may differ (reason being that brands and textures differ in the dried potatoes, some need less water), so you may need to slightly adjust this, ie a little more potato flakes/dehydrated potato may need to be added – make a note of how much of these quantities worked for you for your future reference. It’s a simple detail, but worth noting.

INGREDIENTS FOR ‘EGG WHITE’

  • 2 tbsp firm silken tofu (I use Mori-Nu Organic)
  • 2 tbsp vegan mayonnaise

Extras:-

  • A sprinkle of fresh chopped chives (optional)
  • Freshly ground pepper (optional)

METHOD:

  1. Crumble the tofu into a clean bowl, then add the mayonnaise.
  2. Mix gently, then spoon in the ‘yolk’ mix – mix gently until the ‘yolk’ is covered with the mayonnaise.
  3. Refrigerate this mix for 1 to 2 hours before serving.
  4. Spoon onto fresh bread and enjoy! I suggest using the freshest and tastiest wholegrain bread, and the best possible brand of vegan mayonnaise.

NOTE:
If you wish to make ‘hard-boiled eggs’, use hen egg moulds – cut a piece of tofu to fit a half-egg mould, level it with a knife, and, using a spoon, carefully scoop out an oval shape. Then fill this cavity with your ‘egg yolk’ mix. Place in the fridge for a few hours until set, before serving.

2. My Vegan Spanish Omelet (also known as Frittata)

INGREDIENTS FOR FILLINGS

  • 4 slices of vegan cheese of your choice, cut into 2 inch squares (or around 1½ cups grated mozzarella cheese)
  • 1 small zucchini (a.k.a. courgette), diced into small pieces
  • ¼ red pepper, diced into small pieces
  • 1 small red Spanish onion, or other of your choice, finely chopped
  • 6-8 brown mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1 potato, cooked, and cut into small pieces

INGREDIENTS FOR BATTER

  • 200g firm silken tofu
  • ¼ tsp turmeric
  • ¼ tsp ground garlic granules
  • salt to taste (or else for an “egg-ier” flavor, you could try kala namak (black salt) – available from Indian grocery stores. It adds a sulfuric, eggy taste.
  • 3 Tbsp nutritional yeast
  • ¾ cup (190 mL) soya milk, or any other vegan milk (cashew milk)
  • 1 heaped tsp tahini
  • 2 heaped Tbsp white flour *
  • *(can be made with gluten free flour – it’s best to buy a ready mixed one – if not I suggest tapioca, rice and corn mixed together to make the suggested amount)
  • Tip:- Remember that the denser you want the texture to be, the more flour you will have to add.

METHOD:

  1. Pre-cook the vegetables by frying them gently, including the potato (boil first, drain, then gently fry). Having set them all aside, have them ready to add onto your omelet.
  2. Combine all the batter ingredients in a plastic or metal bowl. Then simply process with an electric hand whisk or blender until thick and creamy – taste for salt before frying. (Note: You will be left with a fairy thick batter – this is necessary, and is the binding factor in the omelet. So try not to be tempted to add more liquid – it should part from the ladle when you gently pour it to your hot pan).
  3. Next, heat up a greased non-stick frying pan for a minute or two, and then add a full scoop of the mixture with a soup ladle.
  4. After 1 minute, add 2 slices of your favourite vegan cheese, and allow to cook for a further 3-4 minutes, making sure that you keep the edges from sticking by using a spatula.
  5. Now spread all the cooked vegetables evenly on top of the cheese in the pan, and allow to cook for 3-4 minutes.
  6. Fold the omelet in half – making sure it is not stuck to the pan, and gently tuck your spatula under the folded omelet at this point, ready to serve it onto a plate. Do this by using the pan (not the spatula) to drop into the plate – it should slide off fairly easily.
  7. Repeat the above process to make the second omelet.

3. The Ultimate Genius Vegan Eggs

INGREDIENTS FOR ‘HARD-BOILED EGG WHITE’

  • 1½ cups (375ml) soya milk, or any other creamy non-sweetened vegan milk of your choice
  • under ½ tsp kala namak (otherwise known as black salt – it has a sulphuric “egg” flavour, so is essential for this recipe (you should find this at your local Indian or Asian grocery store
  • 2 tsp agar powder (if you use the flakes, you’ll need double the amount, which you can whizz in a dry blender to turn into powder)

METHOD:

  1. Put the above in the liquidizer/food blender, and liquidize on high speed until smooth.
  2. Transfer to a small pan and heat on a low heat until the mixture thickens, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon (around 2 minutes).
  3. Remove from the heat, and pour into egg mould (use hen’s egg moulds, available online).
  4. Then leave in the fridge for an hour or so to solidify.
  5. This mixture makes around 6 ‘egg’ halves.

INGREDIENTS FOR ‘HARD-BOILED EGG YOLK’

  • 25g (2 Tbsp) vegan dried instant mashed potatoes, dehydrated flakes or powder (Edwards USA, Terrasana UK – also here is a link that will ship to Australia)
  • 3g (1 tsp) nutritional yeast
  • 1g (¼ tsp) turmeric (use a little less if you prefer)
  • 1g (¼ tsp) kala namak salt
  • 8g (1 tsp) potato starch
  • 100ml hot water
  • 1 tsp vegan margarine or 1 tsp refined pure coconut oil
  • 1 tsp sunflower or canola oil (not olive oil, as that would alter the taste)

METHOD:

  1. Make up your mashed potato mix, add margarine and other ingredients, and mash until consistency resembles hard-boiled egg yolk, see pic – if you are uncertain, it should be thick in consistency.
  2. Mix ‘yolk’ mix really well, then place in freezer for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Then remove from freezer, and using clean hands, form into yolk sized balls in the palms of your hands.
  4. If you want to make a runnier ‘yolk’, add some hot water to your mix in a very small bowl, and stir all the time until you reach a smooth egg yolk consistency.

NOTE:
The ratio of water/liquid versus the potato flakes or powder that you find may differ (reason being that brands and textures differ in the dried potatoes, some need less water), so you may need to slightly adjust this, i.e. a little more potato flakes/dehydrated potato may need to be added – make a note of how much of these quantities worked for you for your future reference. It’s a simple detail, but worth noting.

TO MAKE YOUR ‘EGG’ HALVES
Remove your ‘egg white’ halves from the fridge, then, using a spoon, carefully scoop out an oval shape. Fill this cavity with your ‘egg yolk’ mix, and level with a flat knife. Then place in the fridge for a few hours until set, before serving.

TO MAKE A WHOLE ‘EGG’
If you wish to make a whole ‘egg’, take two of your halves (with cavities for the yolk already scooped out). Meanwhile, having formed your yolk into an appropriately sized sphere, place it in your scooped out cavities (see above), making sure that they are levelled as much as possible, before spreading some agar paste on the faces of both white halves, and gently pressing together. The agar paste can be made using ½ tsp agar powder mixed with a bit of vegan milk, heated on the stove until thickened, and allowed to cool down for a minute or so. Ensure you brush the agar mix onto the ‘egg’ halves before it completely thickens. This is a labour of love – only done to impress guests! It took me a while to get the ‘eggs’ above as perfect to the eye as possible. Then refrigerate your ‘egg’ for an hour or so before serving.

5. The Perfect Vegan Fried Egg . . . Sunny Side Up

INGREDIENTS FOR ‘EGG YOLK’

  • (again see my Egg Mayonnaise recipe)
  • 2 heaped Tbsp vegan dried instant mashed potatoes, dehydrated flakes or powder (Edwards USA, Terrasana UK – also here is a link that will ship to Australia)
  • 7 tbsp (105 mL) hot water (may need a tiny bit more)
  • 1 tsp nutritional yeast
  • ¼ tsp turmeric (available in the US from here, or the UK from here)
  • ¼ tsp kala namak salt, otherwise known as black salt – it has a sulphuric “egg” flavour, so is essential for this recipe (you should find this at your local Indian or Asian grocery store
  • ¾ tsp Orgram egg replacer (or Ener-G in the US)
  • 1 tsp vegan margarine
  • 1 tsp sunflower or canola oil (not olive oil, as that would alter the taste)

METHOD:

  1. Make up your mashed potato mix with the water, add margarine and the other ingredients including the oil.
  2. Mash using a fork until consistency resembles hard-boiled egg yolk, but it should be thick in consistency (there is a reason for this).
  3. Then spoon out half of the mixture into a separate bowl, and set aside.

INGREDIENTS FOR ‘EGG WHITE’

  • 1 x 349g(12.3 oz) pack of firm silken tofu (I use Mori-Nu non-GMO
  • TIP: you may wish to get the packet of tofu and place in the freezer for half an hour prior to opening it and cutting it up – makes for a firmer cut.

METHOD

  1. No secret or frills, it’s firm silken tofu. Using a round cutter (mine was 7cm/2¾”), cut through the centre of the tofu block, so you should be left with a cylinder around 2” thick – this will yield around 4 egg whites. All you have to do is cut this into 4 equal slices with a very sharp knife (don’t use a serrated one).
  2. Next, with a smaller round cutter (around 3cm/1¼”), press out the centre of the first ‘egg white’, which will leave space for your ‘yolk’. Do this carefully, as the tofu will be very fragile, and repeat the same with each ‘egg white’.
  3. In the meantime, you will have extra tofu left – place this in a covered container and refrigerate. I use this to make the egg mayonnaise/salad the next day – I just put together some more yolk (it only takes a couple of minutes), and then just add the mayo, as per the recipe (see link above).
  4. Now heat up some oil in a non-stick pan. Meanwhile, take 1 teaspoon of the egg yolk (make sure it has cooled down), roll it in your palms, then flatten it slightly.
  5. Then, using the smaller cutter, cut out the ‘yolk’ circle, which will fit inside the centre of the ‘egg white’ perfectly. But don’t place it in there yet at this stage.
  6. Gently place your egg white in the hot oil, one at a time, in and shallow fry it until golden around the edges on both sides.
  7. Now flip it, and place your egg yolk in the middle to fit the puzzle so to speak, and press down a little with a teaspoon.
  8. Meanwhile add some hot water to the mix in your 2nd ‘egg yolk’ bowl, and stir all the time until you reach a smooth egg yolk consistency.
  9. Using a small teaspoon, pour a tiny amount of this in the centre of the egg yolk, but don’t agitate it.
  10. Then spoon some of the oil it is frying in over the top of the yolk, to seal the top, and sprinkle on some salt and pepper.
  11. Gently bring it out from the pan onto your toast, or your plate, and enjoy alone, or with your favourite sauce. We love HP.
  12. That’s it, you’ve homemade delicious vegan eggs FOR LIFE.

NOTE:
You will also need extra oil for frying your egg.

Thank you for the awesome sharing, it can be hard to imagine a life without eggs for some people. While there are many commercial products out there, this guide is focused on simple, easy to find, solutions for vegan egg replacements for nearly everything.

Thank you for the wonderful sharing and making the effort to give awareness to the most.

The pictures looks really yummy, but i don’t think i have the time to prepare them. I love eggs & after watching the sufferings & the conditions, i think twice every time i have eggs now. Just have to be mindful.

Thank you for the recipes which I never thought that there’s ways to make eggs the vegetarian way. At the basis of vegetarianism, the bottom line which in my opinion is about killing or deprivation of a living being from being alive. I love eating eggs. My mentality of killing was eating chicken and not egg because eggs are not fully formed thus might not constitute to killing. However, after reading the blog and knowing from the Cruel Cage Egg system, eating eggs does promote animal cruelty and actually depriving the eggs from hatching into a chick. I am not a vegetarian yet but am going to try it slowly. I believe , I will be able to progress towards being a vegetarian in the future.

  4. Loh Yun Seen on Dec 6, 2018 at 2:06 pm

As animal cruelty has long been a major concern in the food industry, to become a vegetarian has always been one of the major life goals for me to achieve. Have tried for three times and failed all three tries, I found it extremely difficult to change such habit as it will involve a strong will power for self-discipline. However, despite all these failed attempts, to give up shall never be an option for me as I am confident that I will be able to achieve such goal if I never give up on such task and the only question shall be sooner or later.

  5. Mingwen on Dec 5, 2018 at 8:37 am

    I’ve tried to imagine IF..
There is no cruel animals farming in the world for the sake of feeding more human that are extremely greedy, selfish & lazy.

Human being is making life so much convenient & easy with the use of powerful science & technology, but what is the consequences & end results?

Human are NOW more prone to
    1) shorter life span
    2) all kind of diseases(physical & psychological) especially many of those without cure
    3) and many more that the list will keep on going

    Human are NOW creating more
    1) all types of environment pollution
    2) Global warming
    3) rubbish
    4) and many more that the list will keep on going

What has been good that human being has ever do to the earth? What have human being give back to the earth for staying & using whatever for life? What can we do to earth, except destroying?

I love eggs a lot and this is one item probably I wouldn’t want to leave without. I must make it a point to try vegan eggs from now on and avoid real eggs. We need to realise that we don’t need to eat meat in order to survive, it is our taste buds that We are holding back and continue eating meat.

  8. Tek Lee on Dec 5, 2018 at 2:57 am

The pictures look delicious. I haven’t tried vegan eggs before, if have chance, I must try one. It’s quite common to see vegetarian restaurant in Malaysia, but it’s quite unusual to see a full vegan vegetarian in Malaysia. If found, I hope they will cook the vegan egg, it is because it looks delicious, and it’s definitely something new in the market. At least in Malaysia vegetarian F&B market. There are more and more people in Malaysia start to realize and concern about vegetarian food. The vegetarian restaurants should think of more recipe like this to make more variety of vegetarian food, to attract more people to start eating vegetarian, especially the young ones.

  9. June Kang on Dec 5, 2018 at 1:49 am

The recipes shown that there are alternatives or replacements that taste as good as the real thing. Some of the replacement food today is healthier than the meat. I always believe that human beings don’t need to eat meat in order to live. Be vegetarian today to crate less killing animals for food. Animals just like us can feel the pain. With the emergence of so many great alternatives to meat and animal products, there is no reason why we can’t all do our part to make a difference.

  10. Andrea Lai on Dec 5, 2018 at 1:45 am

It is true that food is the most important thing in our daily consumption. We need food to keep our body warmth, function and survive! Hence, due to desire and craving for better tastier nice good food, people target meat as part of dish in their meals other than vegetables.
Actually, human beings are the most fortunate animals because we consume both meat and vegetables. So therefore, to be a vegan, vegetarian or a carnivore is a personal choice.

  11. Nicholas on Dec 5, 2018 at 1:37 am

There are so many varieties of vegan food out there that able to give the required nutrition for our body and it’s tasty too. There is no reason for us to say that we can’t stop eating meat for the health reason. For humanity reasoning we can definitely stop eating meat if we see or witness how the animals being treated in the slaughter house. How could we be ok to see the animals being killed and placed it on our dining plate. Eventhough we are not the one that killed them but it’s due to our demand someone will kill them for us. We are just indirectly created the reason for the killing.

Look at the menu above and that give us no reason to say be meatless. It’s just the matter of choice and whether we realise that the animals want to live just like us.

  12. Pastor Henry Ooi on Dec 5, 2018 at 12:54 am

There are many vegetarian restaurants in Malaysia but very few vegan food outlets. The main reason could be because Malaysians are spoilt for food choices with the rich cuisines by the Malays, Chinese and Indians. This is not to mention other ‘imported’ cuisines from other countries. Another reason may be working people prefer to have their lunch nearest to their working place to cut down on travelling time and traffic. Similarly for dinner, for cooking dinner would entail shopping, preparing, cooking, and cleaning. Some lucky people may have their partner who cooks for them, that is, if their partner is not working away from home. And some lucky people may have their mother who cooks for them. It would need awareness and time for people to adopt and adapt to this way of eating, whether it be for health reason, spiritual or out of compassion for animals.

  13. Vivian Ong on Dec 5, 2018 at 12:15 am

The recipes shared in this article looks yummy but too time consuming to cook it. Well, it was hard for me to go on vegetarian diet last time compared to now. It is my 3rd year now doing 3 months vegetarian vow in conjunction with Rinpoche’s birthday. Even after the vow has ended, I still consume less meat compared to last time and too meat hurts my gums especially the area around my wisdom tooth. So, for those eat meaters out there, do try to be on vegetarian diet once in a while and you won’t regret.

  14. pammie yap on Dec 4, 2018 at 11:10 pm

The recipes above, they look really good but I don’t think I can spend so much time just to prepare. Moreover, I don’t even know how to cook a proper meal. Wouldn’t it be nice if we have more vegan/vegetarian restaurants in Malaysia. More choices and at the same time, educate people the benefits. Not only we learn to be kind to other beings and cultivate a good habit, we can lessen the pain and cruelty towards the animals.
Like what Paul McCartney said “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.”

  15. Julia Tan on Dec 4, 2018 at 10:30 pm

I used to complained about what can I eat being a vegetarian. I was those type to rather go hungry than eating what i do not like vegetarian because i was a meat eater, i do not like vegetable. It’s been 8 years I became a vegetarian. I am glad I did it and no turning back.
Those food above looked great and yummy but i do not think i want to spend so much time to make all those food in order to convince myself to be a vegan. Just think of the sufferings that those hens have to bear in order for you to have that egg is good enough to turn me down to eat that egg. Hence is the matter of how your mind work. How you set your motivation and how you have to answer your own karma and practice.

    Everything start from not killing.

As always the greed of man destroys a lot of nature way of providing. Egg laying is the natural way for chickens but due to the greed of man to profit, an appetite for eggs was created especially as a breakfast staple. With creating such a tremendous appetite, chickens were abused to lay eggs beyond their natural ability.

Due to compassion for the dire situation of chickens, new “eggs” supplement are created and the recipes contained herein are ingenious and gratifying.

When there is a will, there is always a way. Let us continue to feed ourselves in compassionate ways.

  17. Echeah on Jul 24, 2016 at 6:47 pm

Wow, I was definitely fooled! Looks like the real thing, must taste even better. Fake eggs at a whole new different level, LOL! A must try. Thank you Rinpoche for these great recipe ideas.

  18. Fong on Jul 11, 2016 at 4:40 am

Thank you for the wonderful recipes for egg replacements!

Food is care and in this Samsara of ours, we crave different things. Learning to do without eggs is only a small step towards learning how to lessen our cravings for other things. As Rinpoche says in the article, it is only kindness and compassion not to add to the demand for eggs so that the farms will have less battery hens. It just a link in the chain.

Thank you for showing us that a simple gesture like deciding to lessen or cut out consumption of eggs has so very many other benefits.

  19. Pastor Antoinette Kass on May 27, 2016 at 12:04 pm

Who wants to be fooled? I am sure noone – but indeed this time it is good to be fooled! Eggs have a big place in our daily food and many people think that they are beneficial to our health but they are not.

Here is a link to a short video I saw by Dr. Greger and his blog http://www.nutritionfacts.org.

Dr. Greger posts a lot about eggs being unhealthy like on the video below, he writes: “A similar exponential increase in carotid artery plaque buildup was found for smokers and egg eaters.” http://nutritionfacts.org/video/eggs-vs-cigarettes-in-atherosclerosis/

The recipes and pictures look delicious and with an open mind we can adapt to the taste and have a healthy replacement.

Making the effort to replace the eggs really makes a difference for the hens who have to suffer so much for our convenience.

Thank You Rinpoche for always creating awareness and inspiring us to change.

    Humbly,
    Pastor Antoinette

  20. Pastor Shin on Dec 16, 2015 at 2:44 pm

There are sub-categories of vegetarian who consume eggs and those who do not. Lacto-ovo vegetarians accept the normal consumption of eggs because they do not believe that doing so conflicts with an ethical vegetarian diet. They do not see eggs as living things and subsequently do not make the connection between consuming eggs and causing animal suffering or death.

However, vegans and many vegetarians choose to not eat eggs because they believe that purchasing “battery hen” eggs supports an institution that cages up to nine birds together, debeaked them, and forces them to continually lay eggs until they are calcium -depleted and on the verge of death, at which point, they are slaughtered.

Access to free-range eggs may not be easy, and contrary to popular believe, free-range regulations may not require that hens spend substantial time outdoors, only that the hens have access to the outdoors. These “free-range” chickens are housed to a similar standard as the barn. So the hens may also suffer in poor housing and other problems like a regular battery hen.

As many of us grew up eating non- vegetarian food, it is a comfort being able to enjoy the same dishes, cruelty-free. Apart from the recipes above, there are more and more vegetarian/vegan options or alternative/ replacement recipes that replicate the taste and texture of eggs/meats that are available online, waiting for you to try 🙂

As organic or natural food stores become more popular, more and more meat-free, egg-free and dairy-free alternatives are available. This is good news. It’s also a nice surprise to see these items in regular supermarkets nowadays due to more people choosing a healthier and cruelty-free eating.

These recepies are very good and they look like they taste quite good too. They save a lot of pain and suffering thigh is the best part. One day when I switch to no eggs I will surely use these recipes they look delicious and eggs are a big part of my diet currently. So thank you Rinpoche for sharing these recipes.

I currently only am not eating meat and fish, things that were sentient and living that had to be killed, I removed from my diet. So I eat eggs, one day I will try to switch to vegan for animals because I took the first big step, for no death. Then I will try to go vegan for no suffering at all in my diet. So these substitute egg recipes are super helpful to me.

Human beings are selfish things, kill for satisfaction for their desires that are all very temporary. Is that worth the cost of life? Is there really such thing as a cheap peace of meat? It is all so pricy, life has so much worth. Is that worth a little taste. Humans are such cruel things. That is why I am taking the steps to no suffering.

I used to think eggs were the one of the best foods we could eat. Figures I was wrong… Its really amazing how sometimes we are convinced that animal products are good for us. The animal product industry has flooded our brains full of lies/propaganda since we were young. We are told milk is great for us, full of calcium, and we need it for our bones to be strong; but in fact is the leading cause of osteoporosis (brittle bone disease). Same with meat we are told we need a lot of meat because without it we won’t get enough protein. Last time I checked horses were herbivores and they have way more muscle than we do. Same with eggs full of cholesterol and we are told they are healthy for us. Once we get past the propaganda we have been told we see the real truth of what we are eating. The reason we are being told all this is because it drives the profits up of the people who own these industries. All the nutrients we need can be found in a plant-based diet. And there is no harm to these poor animals who have no choice but to be born in that circumstance.

It is one of the hardest habits to change, as we eat everyday. Also sometimes it is hard to find vegetarian/vegan options in restaurants. But once we realise that the need to eat animal products is an addiction of a sort it becomes easier to address the issue.

  25. Julien Roth on Sep 16, 2015 at 11:05 pm

Many people do not see it, but eating eggs is just as bad as consuming meat. Now I’m not gonna lie, i myself eat eggs. But now that i know that i can have a vegan substitute for eggs, i just might give it a go.

There are actually substitutes for all products that come from animals. We just don’t know it. A lot of people are familiar that there is a substitute for meat, and thats mock meat. But did you know there is a vegan substitute for fish? or even eggs in this matter. wow, amazing. Even for milk, instead of drinking actual milk from cows, you can take almond milk, or soya milk. They have the same substances inside them. And the best part, it almost tastes the same! There is not need to kill animals to have good tasting food 🙂 We do not need meat to have good food! If you remember that, and you accept that, then you can easily become a vegetarian for the benefit of yourself, and the animals of the world.

    Dear Rinpoche,

I find it hard to believe that even something like eggs are tainted in blood because of human beings. Despite our good points, we really are bad people. 🙁

I’m just glad that the people who are good have the courage to do these and expose the bad side to create awareness, even when they know they will not be universally loved.

Sad to say, I’m not ready to give up eggs yet. 🙁 Perhaps someday in the future I will be.

    Your humble student,
    Keng Hwa.

Mount Wutai is a sacred Buddhist mountain. The cultural landscape is home to forty-one monasteries. Its central area is surrounded by a cluster of flat-topped peaks or mesas roughly corresponding to the cardinal directions. Significance of Mount Wutai is one of the Four Sacred Mountains in Chinese Buddhism. Each of the mountains is viewed as the bodhimaṇḍa of one of the four great bodhisattvas. Wu Tai San is the home of the Bodhisattva of wisdom Manjushri. Beautiful architectural temples have been built since from the 1st century AD to the early 20th century. The temples are inseparable from their mountain landscape. Those monasteries of Mount Wutai remain an important repository of Buddhist culture. Every year it has attract thousands of pilgrims from across a wide part of Asia. Mount Wutai is an exceptional testimony to the cultural tradition of religious mountains that are developed with monasteries. The temples demonstrate a long history of construction and reconstruction. Wutai Shan is worth visiting for its rich Buddhist culture, historical temples, and stunning natural scenery. Visitors can experience a spiritual atmosphere, see numerous temples. I am fortunate joining Kechara group visiting these Holy places at Wu tai Shan years back, witnessing the beauty of the mountain landscape, even though that time some areas still be under construction and can be crowded. Beyond its cultural sites, the mountain offers impressive natural scenery with lush greenery, mountain streams, and panoramic views.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing as it reminds me of my pilgrimage trip.

The right attitude when receiving offerings is one of gratitude, humility, and joy, recognizing the act as an expression of the giver’s generosity and a means to fulfil their spiritual path. It is important to accept gifts graciously, as refusing them can be impolite or seen as rejecting someone’s kindness. Appreciate the giver’s generosity and understand that the offering represents a sacrifice of their own resources. Rejoice in the giver’s generosity: Be happy for the giver’s spiritual practice of making the offering, which helps them to reduce their own attachments to material possessions. In Buddhism, receiving offerings requires an attitude of rejoicing in the giver’s generosity, understanding the offering as a practice for the donor, and a commitment to use it to benefit others. Recipients should have a compassionate and selfless motivation, viewing the act as a mutual opportunity for generosity and a way to help the giver reduce their attachments. Well using the offering wisely to further spiritual practice and the benefit of all sentient beings. We encouraged to make offerings to the Three Jewels but even more so, we are encouraged to make offerings to our gurus, considered the most precious of all. A precise teachings from this post.
Thank you Rinpoche and Khong Jean Ai.

Offering butter lamps is a Buddhist practice symbolizing wisdom dispelling ignorance. Many benefits when we offer butter lamps such as accumulating merit, purifying negativity, achieving spiritual clarity, and receiving blessings for wealth and well-being. The act is a powerful act of devotion, helps guide the deceased, and is used to focus one’s mind for meditation. When we practices with correct motivation it lead us to greater wisdom, clarity of mind, and the ability to discern virtue from non-virtue. The ultimate goal is to use this practice as a step toward enlightenment and liberation from suffering. The flame of the lamp symbolizes wisdom, and lighting it represents the removal of the darkness of ignorance and confusion. Awesome …offering butter lamps is seen as a way to generate good karma and merit for oneself and others. As this light offerings brings happiness, liberation from suffering, enlightenment, and the ability to help others as well.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing. with the detailed explanation of why we do butter lamps. A profound teachings.

Am so glad to be expressing my profound gratitude to a man that is so concerned about other people’s well being. I was suffering from (HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS TYPE II) The doctors keep telling me that there is no cure but i believe that there is a cure somewhere and they don’t want people to get cured. I tried searching online if I could see anything that will help me and a comment on online on how Dr Ehi help to cure herpes with herbs and i also saw so many comments about him on many web pages on how he had helped and cured so many people suffering from HERPES 1$2, HPV, CANCER, HIV/AIDS, COLD SORE etc. So I contacted him through his email and I shared my problems with him and he sent me the herbs through UPS and gave me instructions on how to use it. It took me two weeks to finish the herbs and after I finished using it, he told me to go for a medical test, behold the result was negative, now I am HERPES VIRUS free. I just want to use this platform to thank Dr Ehi for curing me from that horrible disease and also for exposing his herbal cure to the world at large, please you can as well contact Dr Ehi on his email below. Found this old post , an example shown to us how compassionate Rinpoche was, helping those vendors on the streets . No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Be kind whenever possible we could do to help those in need. It is always possible. In the second video showing how much care Rinpoche serving foods to workers and sharing, explaining with them about Dharma. Rinpoche kindness in action has inspired us to be kind and helping those who might fighting a hard battle. Everywhere we go, leave a glitter trail of kindness behind us if possible..

Pilgrimage is important in Buddhism because it deepens spiritual understanding, fosters a connection to the Buddha’s life and teachings. It also provides us the opportunities for personal transformation. It helps practitioners to purify negative karma, cultivate positive merit, and strengthen their devotion to the Three Jewels. Visiting sacred sites can also inspire virtuous conduct and a sense of urgency in practicing the faith. Some places of pilgrimage have powerful energy which can bring our mind to present moment. Major sites of Buddhist pilgrimage are often found in northern India in places associated with the Buddha’s life, teaching and enlightenment. Going on a pilgrimage gives us a chance to step away from the chaos of our schedules.
Reading this article again reminds me of my pilgrimage to Nepal years back,. It’s a once life time trip but I am glad made it twice.
It’s a great memories for Pastor David and Paul who brought their parents om pilgrimage to India and Nepal. Awesome …they embarked on a spiritual journey in India and Nepal visited sacred temples, ancient Buddhist sites and Serpom Monastery.

The Nature of the mind is a central concept across various philosophical traditions, It generally refers to the mind’s intrinsic characteristics. As it believed to encompass awareness, purity, and a capacity for both peace and agitation. Most spiritual traditions offer some combination of four practices for those who would seek to know their true nature. We could self-transform through training our mind. When we face difficult situations and things go poorly in our lives, if we’re able to change our attitudes toward them, we’ll be able to transform these experiences into ones that will further our spiritual progress. A profound teachings indeed for us to understand more about the true nature of our minds and how we can transform our minds through sincerely practicing.

Wow…..800 White Tara statues been offered to HE Tsem Rinpoche from the Board of Directors in Kechara. Tsem Rinpoche kept 3 and the rest was offered to the monks in Shar Gaden Monastery back in 2013. That’s more beneficial and having arranged these statues shipped to India for the monks at the monastery on Rinpoche behalf. October 2014, Beng Kooi and her team of 5 people, along with 29 pilgrims had their first experience travelling to a monastic setting. Rejoice to them such a meaningful journey whereby they met with many high lamas and many old, holy monks. They did offered the White Tara statues, robes, books, food, drinks and many wonderful and beautiful pictures offerings to the monks. Looking at those pictures in this blog post tells more. Truly a great memories for them.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
