A 19th Century image of Dorje Shugden commissioned by the Mongolian State Oracle, Luvsankhaidav (1871-1918) for use in his temple. It can currently be found in the Choijin Lama Temple Museum in Ulanbaatar, Mongolia. With three round eyes, a gaping mouth and fanged teeth, Dorje Shugden is depicted in monastic robes wearing a lacquer hat and riding a snowlion. As the central figure on this thangka, Dorje Shugden is portrayed in larger proportions than usual, a reflection of his importance to Luvsankhaidav. Click image for high resolution download. For over 350 years, Buddhist masters from the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism (Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug) have relied on the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden to clear obstacles and create conducive conditions for their spiritual path and that of their students. These high masters all knew that Dorje Shugden’s practice is beneficial so they spread it among their students.

Over time, the practice entered into Mongolian culture, since Mongolia adopted Tibetan Buddhism many hundreds of years ago. In fact, in 1587 Mongolia’s leader at that time, Altan Khan, invited His Holiness the 3rd Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso to attend a summit. There, they entered into a priest-patron relationship. From then on Mongolians have been great patrons of Tibetan Buddhism.

Dorje Shugden came to be regarded highly and even the State Oracle of Mongolia, Choijin Lama Luvsankhaidav, had a special thangka commissioned for worship in his own monastery. Lama Luvsankhaidav even took trance of Dorje Shugden, one of a few very important protectors. For the State Oracle to have taken trance of Dorje Shugden speaks of the importance the Mongolian people once placed on the protector. They would not have consulted a being whom they did not believe would give them correct advice and bestow the greatest of blessings. The thangka above is the very thangka that Lama Luvsankhaidav commissioned. You can read more about this thangka below.

The wrathful Dorje Shukden has three round eyes, a gaping mouth and fanged teeth. Attired in monastic robes and a lacquer hat with a skeleton finial, he rides an ornamented snow lion. In his right hand he brandishes a wave-shaped fish knife, whilst in his left he holds the heart and lungs of the enemy. On the inner side of his right arm is an eye.

He is surrounded by his retinue of four deities who embody his tantric activities of empowering, destroying, enriching and pacifying. Amidst the clouds at the top is the empowering deity mounted on a green dragon (Left) and the destroying deity riding a Garuda (Right); whilst at the bottom is the pacifying deity on a white elephant (Left) and the enriching deity on a white horse (Right). On either side of Dorje Shukden is a cham dancer and a warrior hero, and flanking the snow lion is a fully ordained monk and a nude black ma mo spirit. At the bottom of the painting are various wrathful offerings.

Dorje Shukden, an emanation of Manjusri, is propitiated as a protector mainly by the Sakya and Gelug traditions. This image of Dorje Shukden was commissioned by the Mongolian State Oracle Luvsankhaidav (1871-1918) for use in his temple.

The central image of the painting is portrayed in larger proportions than usual, perhaps signifying the importance of this deity to the State Oracle.

“…The principal activity of the assembly was to propitiate the Choijin protector. According to Dashtseren lama, around 30-40 lamas took part in the daily chanting in the temple. Lamas from Züün Khüree were invited to participate in the bigger ceremonies. The invitation of Choijin (Gürtembe) was performed at the beginning of every month and consisted of calling the souls of the three protectors of the Teaching Naichün Choijin [Nechung], Zimur/Zemer/Zemur Choijin (T. rtse-ma-ra/tsi-ma-ra chos-skyong or tsi’u dmar-po, the special protector deity of Samye monastery) [Kache Marpo] and Dorjshüg/Shüg [Dorje Shugden] which occupied the oracle’s body. Luwsankhaidaw became known as an interpreter of Choijin and Luwsanpeljee translated his mystical texts… ..has “The speaker lama, Luwsanpeljee, listened to this, wrote it down and made it known to the assembled people. Of the three guardian spirits, Naichün/Naichin, and Zimur were not very fierce, but Shüg was a very fierce guardian spirit (dogshin sakhius).” So when the guardian spirit Shüg was within him, the oracle took on a very fierce aspect, hopping and leaping about, bobbing up and down and foaming at the mouth.

According to Sereeter, the main tutelary deities of the temple were Jigjid and Damdin, while its main protectors were Naichün/Naichin, Zimur, and Dorjshüg.”

Dorje Shugden Taking Trance in Peaceful Form

This video has two parts. The first part was filmed in Gaden Shartse Monastery in Mundgod, Karnataka State, South India, and the second part was filmed in Europe.

In the past, Gaden Monastery was home to a very well-known and extremely powerful oracle by the name of Choyang Duldzin Kuten. He was the official oracle of Gaden Monastery and a layman. He was not learned in the Sutras or Tantras, yet he served the monastery very well in his capacity as an oracle.

He took trance of various powerful Dharma Protectors of the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon, such as Kache Marpo, Namkar Barzin, Dorje Shugden and Setrap. In Dorje Shugden’s case, he took trance of both the peaceful and wrathful forms of Dorje Shugden.

As everyone knows, Dorje Shugden arose when a very high lama by the name of Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, who lived during the time of H.H. the 5th Dalai Lama, took rebirth as a Dharma Protector in order to fulfill the vow he had made in one of his previous lives. This vow was to become a Protector of the Buddhadharma in general and the path of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically. During his lifetime, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen was known as a renowned logician, debater, teacher and Mahasiddha. As a result of holding his vows, he achieved high states of spiritual attainment.

When Dorje Shugden takes trance in a fully trained oracle, he can appear in two distinct forms, allowing others to not only receive his blessings in person but also free themselves from the emotional baggage that exists today.

In his peaceful form, he appears dressed in the clothes of a high lama. Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche has mentioned this clearly. For Dorje Shugden’s peaceful form, the oracle wears the golden hat of Lama Tsongkhapa and the three robes of a fully ordained monk. While in trance, he speaks like a human would to another human. It is only when Dorje Shugden is entering the oracle and when he is leaving that we see a visible change. At all other times in between, he speaks very smoothly and very calmly. He is able to give initiations, perform rituals and prayers, answer questions clairvoyantly and also do purifications.

For Dorje Shugden’s wrathful form, the oracle wears the wrathful regalia of a high level Dharma Protector. He is not able to remain long in this state due to the wrathful nature of this emanation.

In this video, you will see the famous Gaden Shartse oracle Choyang Duldzin Kuten, who was authorised and blessed by Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang and Kyabje Zong Dorje Chang to be the official oracle of Dorje Shugden. Here you can see him taking trance in the Gyelchen Tenkhang, which was built by Kyabje Zong Rinpoche.

There are many lamas, students and disciples seeking audience, blessings and advice from Dorje Shugden in his peaceful form. You’ll see Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche’s personal attendant Kungo Palden-la, Gangchen Rinpoche and Tsem Rinpoche in attendance.

During the 2nd part of the video, you will see Dorje Shugden taking trance. At [23:34], you can see the Protector entering the oracle as he is invoked. At [33:09], you will see him leaving the oracle after giving advice and blessings to all. As he leaves, he makes prayers for everyone to achieve Bodhicitta.

Timestamps of note in the video:

    12.52 – Kyabje Gangchen Rinpoche

    13:01 – Tsem Rinpoche

13:09 – Kungo Palden-la, personal attendant of His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche

    19.49 – Tsem Rinpoche

21.20 – Choyang Dulzin Kuten in Europe, getting ready to take peaceful trance of Dorje Shugden

32:46 – Dorje Shugden doing prayers and dedications for the benefit of those who sought audience. Here, he is about to leave the oracle’s body.

A very sacred Dorje Shugden thangka commissioned by Lama Luvsankhaidav from 19th Century, found in the Choijin Lama Temple Museum in Ulanbaatar, Mongolia, tell us a thousands of words . Tibetan Buddhism was introduced from Tibet to Mongolia in the beginning of the 13th century. Lama Luvsankhaidav had taken trance of Dorje Shugden for advice. From the painting Dorje Shugden is portrayed in larger than usual, as it signified perhaps the importance of this deity to the State Oracle.
Proven that many centuries ago , many great lamas have relied on Dorje Shugden as their Dharma Protector. The Tbetan Buddhism from Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug tradition have in fact relied on Dorje Shugden to clear obstacles and create conducive conditions for their spiritual path.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

This thangka is a very important in that century because it lets the people in the temple know about how Dorje Shugden looks

  7. yin ping on Dec 10, 2018 at 9:50 pm

This is a sacred Dorje Shugden thangka drawn in 19th Century. It was commissioned by the Mongolian State Oracle, Luvsankhaidav (1871-1918) for use in his temple. As we know thangka serve as an important teaching tool describing the life of the Buddha, Lamas, and other deities and Boddhisattvas. We can see how significant Dorje Shugden is to the Mongolian State Oracle because Dorje Shugden is portrayed in the centre and larger proportions than usual. This thangka is currently in the Choijin Lama Temple Museum in Ulanbaatar, Mongolia.

This is another fact that Dorje Shugden practice is profound and beneficial not only in Tibet, but Mongolia too. Many highly attained masters, monks from different schools as well as lay practitioners rely on him. If Dorje Shugden is harmful, great masters will not encourage others to do this practice. Great masters will not reincarnate perfectly again and again back to our world to spread dharma life after life.

Thank you Rinpoche and his team who has been working very hard with extensive research. I hope more people will learn to understand deeper about Dorje Shugden rather than immediately judge or to be judged. May Dorje Shugden practice continue to grow _/\_

The Yant tattoos have developed over the centuries under the influence of several different religious. They have their reasons to do it as it represents vows and commitments, blessings, kindness and love. It is a spiritual method to help someone become a better person.
From this article we can see most people are seeking for mundane help which is quite common but what most important is how one would be able to transform their mind for better and ultimately achieve liberation from suffering.Thank you very much for this interesting article and video for exploring another type of unique spiritual tradition.

Beautiful thangka of Mahasiddha Naropa and Niguma, the Lady of Illusion paints a thousand words. In this painting the great Tantric mahasiddha Naropa sits gazing up,together with Niguma a dakini and was one of the influential yoginis and Vajrayana teachers. Niguma is one of the two female founders of the Shangpa Kagyu school of Vajrayana Buddhism. A beautiful thangka depicted with the powerful dharma protector Dorje Shugden will be wonderful to have.

Janguli is a Buddhist goddess who protects from snakes and poisons, worshiped in the ancient past. By nature Janguli is actually Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion who will protects us against snakes but actually dissolving our anger. Our anger is the root cause for destruction of merits and causes us to stay in samsara longer. A beautiful thangka depicted with Dorje Shugden the Buddha of Wisdom, Manjushri will definitely wonderful to have in our home protecting us and helping us to clear obstacles in our spiritual path.

The practice of Vajrayogini is especially popular in the Highest Yoga Tantra of the Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug schools. Her Tantra promises rebirth in her pure land known as Kechara Paradise. When Vajrayogini is portrayed in this appearance with the left hand raised and the two feet firmly planted she is commonly referred to as the Naro Khachodma. Red in colour with one face, three eyes and two hands the left holds aloft a white skullcup. As depicted with Dorje Shugden forms a beautiful and powerful thangka.

We are so blessed hearing a sacred, holy recording of the two holy tutors of the Dalai Lama performing a Dorje Shugden kangsol (puja). Great masters HH Kyabje Ling Rinpoche and HH Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche chanting the powerful puja to Dorje Shugden. Both of them were the tutors of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. This is definitely has proven that HH Kyabje Ling Rinpoche had a close connection with Dorje Shugden. HH Kyabje Ling Rinpoche has even composed a combined prayer offering to propitiate the blessings of this enlightened Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden, which no one can denied. Both Kyabje Ling Rinpoche , Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and many Highly attained lamas of Tibet did propitiate Dorje Shugden lamas of Tibet. That’s the truth which cannot be hidden. But HH Dalai Lama insists that Ling Rinpoche, his own tutor, never relied on Dorje Shugden at all. Interesting read, may more people know the truth and understand better of the Dorje Shugden controversy.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Khong Jean Ai for this wonderful sharing .

In loving memory of the 40,000 people who died in the tsunami and the thousands largest single rail disaster in world history. The powerful Sri Lanka tsunami-rail disaster occurred when a crowded passenger train was destroyed on a coastal railway in Sri Lanka by a tsunami. Thank you for the sharing the Buddhist Tsunami Memorial in Sri Lanka. Very touching article, heart breaking to read and to see pictures of the Tsunami tragedy. It was Sri Lanka’s worst and biggest natural disaster in recorded history. Many people were killed and thousands lost their home and family.

As we know horrify incident always remarks many unpleasant feelings and memories.
Despite the widespread wreckage and the unfathomable lives claimed, there remains a sense of optimism in the country.

Appreciation the people involved to build a Buddha statue to purify the mind, builds up the serenity within ones and motivates to overcome the negative emotions of fear, hence uplifting the mind and focusing the attention on the reality of the materialistic world. May Buddha bless and calm all those that passed away from the tsunami.

Venerable Geshe Sopa-lah a learned-monk spoke from his heart feelings and thoughts about what happening around the Dorje Shugden controversy and Dalai Lama as well. Those years back in India Geshe-lah did helped in the many buildings in Gaden Shartse Monastery where our Lama helped in the funds. He paints the truth of his experience sharing what he knew and gave a few points of advice. A friend of our lama for over 20 years, Venerable Geshe Lobsang Sopa-lah visited Kechara Forest Retreat, Malaysia in 2016. Geshe Sopa-lah has been actively involved in the campaign against the Dorje Shugden ban since 1996. He is in fact blacklisted, ostracised and persecuted, family tides cut as he bravely spoke about ban and even attended the protests. Sadly all of his family have since cut communications with him. Geshe Lobsang Sopa-lah now lives in Vermont, USA ,serving HH Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche.

Ooh dear could not imagine a well known man …James Jameson heir to the whiskey empire did such a cruel act. Well he might have his reason to do but I am sure the horrific incident will haunt him foe life. He was the grandson of the man whose signature appears on the whiskey bottles. Heartfelt reading what he did, bought an 11-year-old girl for the price of six handkerchiefs and gave her to a local chief where cannibalism existed at that time in Africa. He witnessed the most horribly sickening sight of the girl being dismembered piece by pieces , cooked and eaten without a particle remained, while he sketched the whole process. This is the most horrific, shocking story I came across.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sad sharing.

Everyone of us have the freedom of thought, conscience and religion. In this modern time I would not imagine such incident of religious liberty exist. In a school of Louisiana, USA, a teacher spoke against a Asian student CC of his religious beliefs in a number of ways. CC was berated, harassed by teachers, administrators and even to that extend of receiving calls to his house. CC ‘s parents could not tolerate anymore and decided to file a lawsuit and won the case. Religious freedom, should be allow to all. Freedom of religion requires not only freeing religion from undue government regulation and interference from any one.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Surprise to know our colon contain of poison due to unbalance diet of food intake. It really true, our body is often conceded toxins as a result of an unhealthy food consumed. However i think it is best to keep a food journal correctly to maintain and track our food intake.

It is really important to eliminate waste from your body every day to maintain a good lifestyle and stay healthy. Hoping to keep the simple ingredients in mind and help many to keep their colon healthy.

Thank you very much for the article sharing a great fact that we need to take it
    seriously to save life.

A very good choice to place a Buddha statue there to bless the beings that are around that area. Many people had lost their lives during the tsunami in 2004 and I believe that area will be full of the spirits of the people that lost their lives during disaster.
It good that Sri Lanka has since built and dedicated a Buddha statue for the deceased and to plant the seeds of enlightenment for all who visit and see it. Thank you for sharing nice article with us.

Winston Churchill was a British politician, military officer and writer who did twice served as the prime minister of Great Britain. Churchill did helped to lead a successful Allied strategy with the U.S. and Soviet Union during World War II. I did not know of his dark side till this post. Winston Churchill was in fact a clear racist and a stubborn imperialist. To many historians Churchill was seen as at the most brutal and brutish end of the British imperialist spectrum. Churchill’s imperialism was motivated only by an altruistic desire to elevate the putatively lower races. Winston thinks only of the colour of their skin. He hate Indians recording to him they are a beastly people with a beastly religion. These are another side to Churchill’s politics and career that should not be forgotten amid the endless parade of eulogies.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting sharing of this great statesman with a darker side behind.

Thank you H.E. Gyara Rinpoche for spreading the Dorje Shugden practices to many thousands Tibetans in Tibet . H.E. Gyara Rinpoche an erudite scholar recently gave Dorje Shugden’s life entrustment initiation to thousands of monks and lay people in Yangting Dechen Ling Monastery. The Tibetan Leadership (CTA) has claimed that Dorje Shugden practice is a minor practice on many occasions. This is not true at all, looking at the pictures tells all. Thousands of Tibetans gathers at Yangting Dechen Ling Monastery, listening to Gyara Rinpoche’s teachings as well as the Guhyasamaja initiation clearly has proven it. He also gave commentary on Dorje Shugden’s qualities, history to strengthen the people’s faith in Dorje Shugden and explaining about the controversy.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great news and may more people have knowledge and understanding of Dorje Shugden . May the ban on it be lifted soon.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
