It is said that on Mount Kailash, Buddha Shakyamuni miraculously manifested as Buddha Heruka Cakrasamvara in sacred union with Vajrayogini along with the accompanying 62 deities in his entourage. He did this in order to expound the Heruka tantras. The purpose of Heruka’s meditative practice is to use desire along with its accompanying attachments, hatred and ignorance, and transform them so you achieve the enlightened state of a Buddha.

According to the Buddha, desire is the most prevalent delusion in samsara and that is why our existence is described as the desire realm. Therefore, desire is most potent of all delusions and that is why it is utilised in Heruka’s meditations. In Heruka’s practice, desire is likened to a door that we use in order to enter into another room. Heruka’s practice is represented by the process of entering the room of enlightenment via the door of desire. In the end, desire itself is dissolved in Heruka’s practice in the achievement of full enlightenment.

In tantra, especially in Heruka’s tantra, desire is used on the path to become fully enlightened. In Heruka’s complex meditations, our sinews, joints, bones, winds and psychic channels are used as the basis to gain higher attainments. Through purification, meditation, recitation, visualisation and the collection of merits we are able to dissolve our projections, ignorance, desire and attachments and thereby develop spiritual attainments.

The Heruka tantra is practised within all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism but the Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug schools give it prominence. Lama Tsongkhapa himself highly recommended the practice of Heruka along with Yamantaka and Guhyasamaja. Hence, Heruka’s practice is proliferated and heavily practised in Gaden, Drepung and Sera Monasteries along with the tantric colleges of Gyuto and Gyume.

Heruka’s nature is innate great bliss and emptiness, which are the special qualities of a fully enlightened Buddha. All of us have are innately Heruka and these are the qualities of great bliss and emptiness within us. Although Buddha Shakyamuni manifested as Buddha Heruka with four faces and 12 arms in a sacred dance, Heruka does not require us to look towards the outer physical Heruka but to discover the inner Heruka qualities that are inherent in all of us. Therefore, once the sacred path of Heruka is conferred on us by a qualified teacher and we practise diligently, we can achieve high realisations. In fact, we can achieve enlightenment within 14 lifetimes in the case of the laziest practitioner, and complete enlightenment in one lifetime for the most diligent practitioner.

Each of Heruka’s four faces represents one of the four ‘moods’ of Heruka that consist of the green ‘peaceful’ face, yellow ‘increasing’ face, red ‘desirous’ face and dark blue ‘wrathful’ face. Each mood is an emotion and a method that an advanced Heruka practitioner can use towards subduing negative beings. Furthermore, Heruka is also known for his divine laugh that subjugates all negative beings. His 12 arms represent various aspects of his meditative practice that counters each of the 12 links of Interdependent Origination. These links were explained by the Buddha as the 12 causes for taking rebirth within samsara. In other words, Heruka’s practice counters the direct causes to take rebirth and remain in samsara.

His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche Rinpoche. He was renown to be a master practitioner of the Heruka and Vajrayogini tantras.

His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche Rinpoche. He was renown to be a master practitioner of the Heruka and Vajrayogini tantras.

When a practitioner engages in Heruka’s practice well, he or she becomes ‘one’ with Heruka. This does not mean that we merge with Heruka or that we dissolve into him. It means that we realise our Buddha nature by meditating according to Heruka’s practice. So when we are one with Heruka, it means that we have gained high spiritual attainments or full enlightenment through Heruka’s practice. Therefore when people say the great masters such as Kyabje Zong Rinpoche are ‘one with Heruka’ it means that they have realised their true Buddha nature and have the special qualities of Buddha Heruka.

According to His Eminence Kensur Jampa Yeshe Rinpoche, there are three main lineages of Heruka’s practice that are very beneficial for people of this degenerate time. The three main Heruka lineages are:

  1. Luipa’s 62-Deity tradition
  2. Ghantapa’s 5-Deity tradition
  3. Krishnacharya’s 62-Deity tradition

All three traditions are practised within the Gelug School. Namygal Monastery of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Gyuto Tantric College, Gyume Tantric College and Gaden Shartse Monastery particularly emphasise the practice of Luipa’s 62-Deity tradition. Heruka and Vajra Yogini were the main practices of many great Mahasiddhas of India, Nepal and Tibet. Such great masters include His Holiness Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche.

Therefore, I am extremely happy to present to you Kyabje Zong Rinpoche’s commentary of the sadhana of the Body Mandala of Cakrasamvara in the lineage of the Mahasiddha Ghantapa. His explanations are especially beneficial as Kyabje Zong Rinpoche had special insight into this practice because he was well known to be a special yogi of this practice. You may read it only if you have received prior initiation otherwise you will breaking tantric commitments. But you can download and keep in your personal library for the future.

May all who seek to engage in Buddha Heruka’s practice through this commentary meet a qualified teacher of the same lineage and gain a chance to continue one’s practice again and again in future lifetimes. May all who practise the powerful and potent sadhana of Heruka gain perfect and complete union of great bliss and emptiness and thereby become one with the Buddha Heruka Cakrasamvara.

2ce30ed0-6b48-4088-afe3-3868a7608058

I was 18 years old when this was taken back in 1983 in Los Angeles, California. Here I am in this photo with my most precious root guru, His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. He has profoundly changed my life for the better forever. Not a day goes by I don’t think about him, love him, miss him and yearn for his presence and teachings.

I meditate on him in my heart every single day. He was everything that a high Tibetan lama is said to be and more. From the moment I heard his name before meeting him from a friend who had met him already, faith instantly arose in me. Instantly faith arose in me. I did 100 prostrations to his picture everyday until I met him. I wanted to make a spiritual karmic connection with him so that when I met him, I can receive many teachings and that is why I made the prostrations.

No other spiritual teacher although all of them were great has this sort of meteoric impact on me. It’s unexplainable. 30 plus years down the line, my faith, respect and trust in Kyabje Zong Rinpoche is unshakable. I will always follow and practice what he has taught me and given me. I will never abandon my teacher or any practice he has given me no matter what obstacles come my way.

No matter if my life is threatened, or I am disliked or segregated for following his instructions, I will never abandon any of his teachings. No other teacher will ever have me change my practice I have received from Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. May I meet Kyabje Zong Rinpoche in all my future lives too and come under his care. I forever bow to him and place the crown of my unworthy head to his feet. I will follow, meditate, trust and believe in my guru always.

Humbly,
Tsem Rinpoche

Lama Yeshe was a very devoted student of His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. Lama Yeshe very much loved and respected Kyabje Zong Rinpoche and was the first lama to invite Kyabje Zong Rinpoche to the west. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche gave vast amount of empowerments, oral transmissions, teachings and sogtae of Dorje Shugden to many of Lama Yeshe’s senior students. Towards the end of Lama Yeshe’s fruitful life, he was in the hospital and physically shutting down. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was giving teachings in Switzerland and was requested to fly in which Kyabje Zong Rinpoche most graciously did. Here in this picture is Kyabje Zong Rinpoche doing special prayers for his student Lama Yeshe. Lama Yeshe was already partially paralyzed, but true to a meditation master, his mind was extremely clear and bright. You can see Lama Yeshe leaning towards Kyabje Zong Rinpoche in deep respect and devotion. Lama Yeshe practiced all the lineages, yidams, protectors such as Dorje Shugden given to him till the end of his life. He never gave up on any of his practices as he has great devotion to Kyabje Zong Rinpoche and his other lamas. Lama Yeshe’s samaya with Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was so pure, intact and perfect till the end. A great inspiration.~Tsem Rinpoche

Mahatma Gandhi was an out standing freedom activist and an influential political leader who played an important role in India’s struggle for independence. Mahatma Gandhi also known as the Father of the Indian nation. His bravery, and his ideas of humanity, peace, and nationalism to oppose British rule he had inspired many other political leaders all over the world. He led a simple life, wore the traditional Indian clothing. He is a truly a leader admired by many .
Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by a Hindu extremist named Nathuram Godse . His passing was a great lost for millions and millions in the country and around the world. Even though he has long passed away yet his legacy still lives on. Many countries such as Switzerland , Austria, Uk, Australia to name a few, built statutes to commemorate of a great man.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting sharing which i do enjoyed reading.

Jacques Marchais, an American woman was inspired to create an art gallery for her collections of Indian and Tibetan art pieces such as thangkas, statues and wood furniture. She had a lifelong interest in collections of Tibetian arts and Himalayan artifacts. She started her collections from auctions, bought from individuals , antique dealers and so forth. Jacques Marchais saw a photograph of the Potala Palace in Lhasa which inspired her to build and design her gallery to resemble a countryside Himalayan monastery even though she had never been to Tibet or the Himalayan regions. Its now referred to as The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art. This is an amazing little gem hidden away on Staten Island’s Lighthouse hill. A small but wonderful haven that features an interesting Tibetan collection and peaceful garden. America’s most extensive collections of Himalayan artefacts can be found here. Since the passing of Jacques Marchais and her husband the museum had gone through rough times but soon recovered to the present state. It has since become a tourist attractions. Harry Klauber, who was the benefactor and executor of her estate did a wonderful job to promote awareness of Tibetan culture . The Centre continues to have workshops, cultural events and so forth for the public. For most to preserve the collections for the researchers assessment and to the public.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Shin Tan for this interesting sharing .

Sarnath is considered a sacred place to the Buddhists for being the place where Gautama Buddha first taught seven weeks after achieving enlightenment in the 6th century BC. This first teaching is known in Sanskrit as Dharmacakrapravartana Sutra, Turning the Wheel of Dharma Sutra. The main topic is the Four Noble Truth, the Eight-Fold Path and teachings associated with it.

After Buddha gave his sermon at the Deer park in Sarnath, his five former companions of his earlier ascetic days were liberated upon hearing the teachings and as a result, they became arhats. That was to be the beginning of the Sangha, the community of the enlightened ones.

In the past, people lived for an immensely long time — as long as 80,000 years, endowed with great beauty, wealth, pleasure, and strength. Over the cause of time, due to the negative actions performed, human’s lifespan gradually shortened to what we are now. Human beauty, wealth, pleasure, and strength also decrease proportionately. It is said in the future, as morality continues to degenerate, human life will continue to shorten to the point where the normal lifespan will be just 10 years, with people reaching sexual maturity at five.

Ultimately, the condition will become worse that the human beings will hunt each other with swords. A few people, however, will take shelter in the wilderness to escape the carnage. And when the slaughter is over, they will come out of hiding and resolve to take up a life of skillful and virtuous action again. With the recovery of virtue, the human life span will gradually increase again until it reaches a very long time (listed as 80,000 years), with people attaining sexual maturity at 500.

Geshe Ngawang Wangyal (1901 – 1983) was the first lama to play a pivotal role in introducing Tibetan Buddhism to the West. He was also the one who brought His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the United States. Geshe Ngawang Wangyal was a Kalmyk born in Russia, he was ordained at the age of 6 due to his inclination in Buddhism. In order to support his monastic study in Drepung monastery in Tibet, Geshe Wangyal was working for the westerners as an interpreter, guide and assistant. In the end, he successfully completed his study and obtained his Geshe qualification. Geshe Ngawang Wangyal migrated to the US in 1955, his Dharma activities started to flourish and he had produced some very learned western students.

Read more to learn about the great deeds of Geshe Ngawang Wangyal.

Interesting read so so…….Tsem Rinpoche ‘s previous reincarnation was Kentrul Thubten Lamseng. Kentrul Rinpoche Thubten Lamsang was one of the most important disciples of Kyabje Trijang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso. Reincarnation do exists as confirmed in many cases . Both Kentrul Rinpoche and Tsem Rinpoche have many similarities in so many ways. As such Guru Devotion, spreading Dharma , building of Kechara Forest Retreat , building of Big statues and so forth to benefit more people. Following Guru’s advice coming to Malaysia to a place unheard of to spread Buddhism teachings . We are very fortunate to have Rinpoche in Malaysia and able to learn Dharma. A beautiful write up of a Great Lama where many of us will benefit reading it.
Thank You Rinpoche and Pastor Jean Ai for sharing this information.

Sakya tradition have been long relyed on Dorje Shugden since the 17 centuries with the 30th Sakya Trizin Sonam Rinchen who enthroned and worshipped Dorje Shugden as a Dharma protector. Its has proven that Gelugpas are not the only sect who practice Dorje Shugden. They are confirmed to have practiced Dorje Shugden. They are have built chapels , composed prayers and pujas to him and even propagated Dorje Shugden practice . They cannot be wrong after all. Dorje Shugden is definitely not evil or spirits , those High Lamas will have the clairvoyance to see the very true nature of Dorje Shugden. That is as Avalokiteshvara, a fully enlightened being which is confirmed by the 39th Sakya Trizin Dragshul Trinley Rinchen. The 31st Sakya Trizin who composed the Dorje Shugden kangsol text is still widely used to this day.
Interesting read which I do enjoyed reading from time to time to understand more so as to increase my knowledge.
Thank you Rinpoche and blog team for this interesting write up.

Thai King, Such A Great Monarch!

I have admired this great Monarch, leader and Dharmaraja since I first read of him many years back. I do not admire him in a political capacity. I am not into politics nor get involved. My post here on him is not as a political figure. But my admiration for him is as a great human being, a kind hearted person and someone who works for others. My praise of him is as a great human being. He is a great hero for me. I admire people who use their lives for others.

Vajra Yogini Daju or self initiation

Self initiation purifies ones vows taken before, mends them, re affirms them, and powerful to purify many downfalls in general that prevent attainments from one’s practice. Also you may retake your mantra count commitment if it was broken.

You plant the 4 types of initiations into one’s mindstream. It is necessary for the Lama also to do daju prior to conferring Vajra Yogini’s initiation to others.

It is a powerful tantric practice to restore one’s practice from time to time to assure success in one’s sadhanas.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

His Holiness Sharpa Choje Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Nyima of Gaden Shartse Monastery. He was a supreme master of both Sutra and Tantra. He served as abbot of both Gaden Shartse Monastery as well as Gyuto Tantric college. After serving as abbot of Gyuto Tantric college he entered into a few long term (3 year, 3 month and 3 day) Vajra Yogini retreats in the forest. He completed that long retreat twice and was going to enter it again till he was asked to be abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery by H.H. the Dalai Lama. He was a great practitioner of Vajra Yogini\'s tantra as well as Dorje Shugden. He was a scholar of the highest renown and he was highly sought after for teachings. He was very devoted to Dorje Shugden throughout his whole life as a pure monk. I was fortunate enough to have him as one of my teachers. Humbly, Tsem Rinpoche

Teehee...She is our Kechara Forest Retreat doggie and runs free throughout our sacred land. Her name Pema means lotus. Tsem Rinpoche
My Nepalese boys work hard and I appreciate them. Today we have purchased special foods for them to snack on and also to cook with so they won\'t be so homesick. These foods are all imported from their country. There\'s a street in downtown K.L. that sell all this. So happy to get this for them. Tsem Rinpoche

In 1989, Bill Porter, also known by his pen name ‘Red Pine’, travelled to the Zhongnan Mountains in China to meet some of these hermits and learn about their way of life. This resulted in his publishing the work titled Road to Heaven: Encounters with Chinese Hermits in 1993. 25 years later, Bill Porter travelled back to the same mountains to see if life there had changed. The outcome of this particular trip was a documentary titled Hermit, about a modern-day journey into the heart of the hermit tradition in China. This is a must watch documentary with so much to learn to enhance our lives which will give us hope as we are all drowning in materialism’s false promises.~Tsem Rinpoche

Wrathful Dakini Ucchusma-In the form of wrathful dakini, Ucchusma has 3 eyes; with both hands holding a vase with nectar at her heart level, her hair loose, and no ornaments. She wears a garment of black silk, with two legs, feet together, standing on a lotus and sun disc. This deity functions to remove negative energy and pollutions from body, speech and mind. The practice was conferred by a Dakini to Drupangsa. -Mantra: Om ar-kham zir-kam bu-ma-na-se ou-cus-ha-ma ma-ha tro-da hung phet

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
