Thank you for your valuable sharing. In order for your body to grow, your body is required to have certain amounts of calories, depending on your age and height. This article have given me an important tracking on average calories from 35 different types of foods. That was amazing and will be very useful.
A healthy, well-balanced diet should contain different varieties of vegetables and fruits. This helps to ensure that you get all the vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy.
From the article , we know that what we can take more to keep us healthy. It is good to know about these quantity of food and the amount of calories it contents.
There is too much calories in manufactured food,no wonder why people these day getting fat and harder to lose weight.Thank you so much for sharing this good and informative article with us.
It is really interesting to see how 200 calories can seem like so much at some point and yet so little at other times. It’s not surprising that processed sugar, candies and sweets are high in calories. Vegetables and fruits are the obvious winner when it comes to low in calories, filling and full of nutrition. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this post, there are so many things that I never thought that at such a small quantity would be such a high amount of calories.
It’s not surprising.
In this modern times, we think off convenience and flavors more than what is healthy. There are jst so many different types of frozen dinners around in the US. And, it is the cheaper and easier alternative to cooking after a long day at work.
The vegan movement in the US still gets a lot of flack. But, I noticed that more and more healthy eateries are sprouting up which also means that more people are aware of healthy eating. Even though not all these eateries are vegetarian, they are healthier in the preparation.
The one item in the whole list that surprised me is the Fruit Loops. I always thought that they were coated with colored sugar and extremely high in calories. So, there are still surprises!
Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this article to create awareness and make us more mindful of what we put on our plate.
It’s not surprising that processed sugar, candies and sweets are high in calories. Vegetables and fruits are the obvious winner when it comes to low in calories, filling and full of nutrition.
It’s kind of ironic because we started off with vegetables and technological advancement gave us more choices of processed food which in turns lead to obesity and health problems and now we are encouraging people to go back to vegetables and away from processed food.
Makes one wonder if technological advancement really benefiting mankind. Or are we continuing to “advance” because we are constantly trying to catch up on fixing the problems that were brought on by development. Advance medical technology to counter all the health issues brought on by development. Renewable energy and sustainable technology to counter all the environmental issues brought on by development.
200 calories 100 years ago is very different to what’s in 200 calories today. I wonder what will be in 200 calories 100 years from now. Will mankind continue to evolve and “advance” or will we encounter a technological collapse and back to basic before the industrial development age.
Wow, I am really surprised with what is 200 calories. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this post, there are so many things that I never thought that at such a small quantity would be such a high amount of calories.
Through this post, it has shown with research that healthier and less processed food contain lesser calories. As compared, meat would be higher in calories compared to vegetables as well. It just shows that by purely taking vegetables is not only healthier, but will help us to keep fit as well!
This post has opened my eyes to see that one should be taking lesser processed food, and taking natural food instead. It would also be healthier.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this. The first one I am shocked is Gummy Bears, how come 20 pierces gummy bears can contain so much calories, I thought gummy bears only contain high sugar and never known it can brings so much calories and you see 4 sticks tootsie pops has equal calories with 20 pierces gummy bears, and it takes me at least 1 hour to finish 4 sticks tootsie pops and I can take 20 pierces gummy bears just by one bite, lol..maybe my logic is wrong, but it just surprised me.
Wow!! It is amazing that a little over 1 sausage is 200 calories!!!
And 1 glass of milk can mean 200 calories.
It really does surprise me that 1 lollipop contains 50 calories ( I will have to think twice the next time I see lollipops on offer!)
If I had a plate of French fries and I dipped them in ketchup that would be a whooping 400 calories!!!!
But yet it would not even fill me up!!
Then I might might want a bowl of black beans which in total would be 600 calories in total!!
Even thought at 600 calories it is only a snack.
Now and then I might have some Hershey kisses which will total 200 calories (yet again) But it does not fill you up and that only 8 pieces can have a huge effect.
Meat also has lots of calories so I guess It is better to eat less meat , or maybe go and be a vegetarian!!
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this piece of useful information.
It is really interesting to see how 200 calories can seem like so much at some point and yet so little at other times.
Though it is well known around the world that fast foods, junk foods and any other foods with lots of oil in it are bad for health, it is really surprising to see for example how only a handful of fries already contains 200 calories or how slightly less than half of a Jack in the Box sandwich already has the same amount of calories while a plateful of carrots or broccoli has the same amount but with the difference of still being hungry or full.
What I have noticed is that dishes that contain meat tend to have more calories but for a lesser quantity, which shows that eating less/no meat and more vegetables can itself lead to a more healthier lifestyle.
Working off a handful of french fries worth of calories can be challenging and most likely still have your stomach rumbling compared to eating a plateful of vegetables of the same calorie amount and not feeling hungry still.
As a vegetarian myself, I now know that not only do vegetarians stop animals being slaughtered for their plates but also leads to a much healthier and better lifestyle.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this wonderful post!

I am rather surprised how quickly is it possible to amass 200 calories, based on this I have been eating way to much haha. I am especially surprised by the amount of calories that can be acquired from the doritos! I think this post would have been better if there were workout routine equivalents to show how much it takes to remove 200 calories from your body.
Here are various exercises that you would normally do and the time required to burn 200 calories:
(Source: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/slideshow.asp?show=27)
Gaming on the Nintendo Wii – 50 minutes
Jump rope – 15-20 minutes
Golf – 50 minutes
Washing your car – 50 minutes
Walking your dog -25 minutes
Tennis – 25 minutes
Moving furniture around the house – 25 minutes
Climbing stairs – 30 minutes
Bowling – 60 minutes
Cycling – 30 minutes
Painting a house – 40 minutes
Mowing your lawn – 40 minutes
Swimming – 30 minutes
Cleaning out garages – 25 minutes
jumping rope, pushups, jumping jacks, crunches, squat thrusts, and jogging in place with for 2 minutes each exercise with breaks in between – 30 minutes
Fixing up your garden – 55 minutes
Dancing – 40 minutes
Basketball – 20 minutes
Treadmill (5 mph) – 20 minutes
Cleaning your house – 40 minutes
Now, I guess that calorie awareness is very properly established. We need to balance our intake with the output too.
Thank you for sharing this post, Rinpoche 😀
Thank you for the fun filled information, Rinpoche.
Didn’t expect broccoli to fill up the whole plate! That just shows most vegetables fill up our tummy with lesser calories intake than most meat
Dear Rinpoche, I’m quite shocked that a glass of milk actually contains so much calories in it, but I was more shocked that hotdogs has much more calories. I was not shocked when I saw that 2 glasses of Coca Cola contains only 200 hundred calories. I was really I was really surprised that a plate full of carrots, celery, mini peppers, sliced apples, broccoli and kiwi contains so less calories. Now I finally understand why people who eat a lot carrots and celery are much thinner than people who like to eat meat. There is too much calories in our manufactured food, no wonder why people these days are getting fatter and fatter and harder to lose weight. If we keep on eating all these unhealthy food soon everybody will be very very fat. In order to become healthier who owns vegetarian diet and stop eating all these foods.
Thank you Rinpoche. Now I know what i can take more to keep myself healthy. Being a vegetarian, i do not think i will have any high calories problem. that’s a lot to make up 200 calories. But if someone is a meat eater or junk food fans, 1 piece of hotdog already cost you 200 calories and imagine how many hotdog you will have to take for a day to fill up your stomach? that’s a scary number right. So for healthy reason also to keep our body fit, eat more vegetable..
If I eat the half cheeseburger, the little french fries on the plate, and drink the 2 glass of coke, I am not sure I will be full or not. But if I eat the carrots, kiwi and milk, I think I couldn’t finish because too full LOL…
Truth is truth, but sometimes due to the craving of our tastebuds, I couldn’t help but will go for those high carbo food such as burgers and rice.
It’s good to know about these quantity of food and the amount of calories it contents, we should be aware that actually our body doesn’t need a lot of food, but the right food.
Thanks Rinpoche for the sharing. 🙂
then i know i should eat more broccoli ,apple and mini pepper as the amount is lots. otherwise will still hungry after eat lol
Quite surprise that Gummy Bears and Hersey chocolate has 200 calories with just small portion and it’s equal to a big big plate of broccoli!
It would be good to know beforehand calories of each food we normally eat, so to control our diet even though we not going to have a perfect body line, but health reasons.
I’m quite surprised a handful of dried apricots contain 200 calories, considering they are fruits. However if they were not dehydrated it would be a plate of 10 apricots, which is reasonable!
