The 97th Head of Gelugpa Kyabje Ling Rinpoche (1903-1983)

Kyabje Ling Rinpoche, the 97th Throne Holder of Gaden and yongs’ dzin (tutor) to the 14th Dalai Lama was born in 1903 in Yabphu near Lhasa. Yabphu is a sacred site of Chakrasamvara and Vajrayogini, shaped like a double triangle. Yabphu also has a precious image of Naropa’s Vajrayogini, which is widely known. Since Ling Rinpoche had been the tutor of the 13th Dalai Lama in his previous life, his reincarnation was confirmed by the 13th Dalai Lama, and he was enthroned in Lhasa at an early age.

When he was 10, he entered Drepung Loseling and began to study the five major texts. At 13, he received novice ordination from the 13th Dalai Lama. As for the study of the five major texts, Ling Rinpoche wrote,

“The basic texts of the five major texts, as well as commentaries by Je Rinpoche, his sons-like disciples, and Panchen Sonam Drakpa were memorized. We had to understand the meaning of the root texts and their commentaries in order to discuss all of their difficult points, properly analyze and understand the different points of view of the main Indian and Tibetan masters. Thus, I carefully studied and discussed them with wise Dharma friends and gained considerable knowledge. ”

In his autobiography, Ling Rinpoche gave a long list of specific texts that have been studied and discussed during this time. First, Ling Rinpoche mentioned the study of the Prajnaparamita associated with Maitreya’s “Five Treatises” given to Asanga, supplemented by the Abhisamayalamkara. The relevant texts of Haribhadra, Jamgon Tsongkhapa, Gyaltsab Je and Panchen Sonam Drakpa were also studied. The study also included “The Eight Hidden Meanings of Prajnaparamita Which Includes Eight Categories and Seventy Topics.” He also recalled that the Gomang and Loseling colleges (both parts of Drepung) held regular debates together, in which he attended. On one occasion, he debated with Geshe Gomang Gangshing on Nagarjuna’s six logic texts of Madhyamika philosophy. According to Ling Rinpoche, these texts “established the direct meaning of emptiness as presented in the Prajnaparamita Sutra.” To study the Madhyamika texts, besides those by Nagarjuna, the additional texts by Je Tsongkhapa and Panchen Sonam Drakpa were also studied.

However, Ling Rinpoche said, “in order to adequately understand the profound views of the Madhyamika philosophy, Pramana (Valid Cognition) must also be studied.” To this end, along with other texts in the higher logic class, Dharmakirti’s text was studied. Ling Rinpoche said that Dharmakirti’s commentary on Pramana “logically proves the non-deceptive nature of the Enlightened Ones and their teachings, which leads to liberation and omniscience.”

Traditionally in Tibet, Jang was a place to study Pramana in the winter, which included long periods of debate sessions, as Ling Rinpoche said: “It was very cold in Jang, our hands were cracked, but you could hardly feel how the blood dripped, because our concentration was fully involved in the debates. ” According to Ling Rinpoche, the most important commentaries on Dharmakirti’s Pramanavartika are by Panchen Sonam Drakpa and Gyaltsab Dharma Rinchen.

Next, of the five major subjects, Vinaya, which, according to Ling Rinpoche, “teaches the way to obtain vows for those who have not yet obtained them, and how to restore when they are broken. The teachings on the three points of advice, the objections, the practices and the permissions are clearly revealed in Gunaprabha’s root and commentary texts on the Vinaya Sutra.” According to Ling Rinpoche, the additional texts by Kunkhyen Tsonawa, Gendun Drup, Panchen Sonam Drakpa are studied.

Finally, the metaphysics of the Abhidharmakosa (Treasury of Abhidharma), which was created by Vasubandhu and included seven Abhidharma texts based on the Hinaya practice, was studied. Among the commentaries studied on this topic was those written by Chim Jampel Yang and Gendun Drup.

In 1922 Ling Rinpoche took full ordination from the 13th Dalai Lama. He was instructed to begin his Geshe degree examination at age 20, an unprecedentedly young age. At age 22, he obtained the Geshe Lharampa degree. He then entered the Upper Tantric College and studied all four classes of Tantra, especially Heruka, Guhyasamaja and Yamantaka. For Guhyasamaja he relied on many texts, including Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s text on the generation and completion stage, commentaries by Chandrakirti and Jamgon Tsongkhapa, among other texts. He also studied Jamgon Tsongkhapa’s commentary on Chakrasamvara “Clarifying the Hidden Meaning”. When he was 23, he was given the first position in the tantric examinations. When he was 24, he became the disciplinarian for the Upper Tantric College for four months.

In addition to the classical Gelug education, Ling Rinpoche also received many teachings from the greatest masters of the time. At the age of 12, he received the teachings of Lamrim Chenmo from the 13th Dalai Lama and his initiation into the Solitary Hero Yamantaka and Vajrayogini from Je Pabongka Rinpoche. Ling Rinpoche wrote about his teachers after graduating from the Upper Tantric College,

“Among my teachers at this time was Je Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, a manifestation of the glorious Chakrasamvara (Pal Khor Dompa). My other teachers were the great Kyabgon Yongzin Sikyong Tradag Dorje Chang, Kyabje Yongzin Trijang Dorje Chang, Kyabje Khangsar Dorje Chang, Chone Lama Rinpoche Losang Gyaltsen Palzangpo and others. In short, I studied with thirty scholars and practitioners. Their kindness cannot be repaid even by keeping them on my head for countless lifetimes. ”

When he was 28 years old, he went to southern Tibet, gave teachings and visited many places of pilgrimage. When the 13th Dalai Lama passed away, he participated in the creation of a golden stupa for his relics. Then at the age of 34, he was appointed abbot of the Upper Tantric College. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed mtshan zhabs (assistant tutor) of the 14th Dalai Lama. In 1941, he was appointed junior yongs’ dzin to the Dalai Lama, and in 1949 he became Sharpa Choeje. In 1953, he became the senior yongs dzin of the Dalai Lama and gave him the teachings on Lamrim and the tantric teachings of Heruka, Guhyasamaja and Yamantaka. In 1954, he gave the full ordination to the Dalai Lama during the Great Prayer Festival.

In 1954, he visited China with the Dalai Lama, after which they visited Kumbum Jampa Ling in Amdo. In 1956, on the 2500th anniversary of Buddha’s Parinirvana, he visited Bodhgaya and other pilgrimage sites in India with the Dalai Lama. After returning to Tibet, he gave many teachings on Tantra, including on the generation and completion stages of Vajrabhairava and Guhyasamaja. In 1959, after the Chinese occupation of Tibet, he fled to India.

In 1960, upon the death of the previous Throne Holder of Gaden (Head of the Gelugpa) in Tibet, Ling Rinpoche was appointed the 97th Throne Holder of Gaden. He ascended to the throne in the Gaden Phelgye Ling monastery. He visited Switzerland and England and gave many teachings. In 1969, he gave a teaching on Lamrim Chenmo at the request of Guru Deva Rinpoche at the Gaden Phelgye Ling Monastery. In 1972, he visited the three monasteries of Sera, Ganden and Drepung in Southern India and gave many teachings. He continued to turn the wheel of Dharma until his passing in 1983. In the conclusion of his autobiography, Ling Rinpoche stated,

“Until now, I have dedicated my stay in India to the service of restoring the waning doctrine of the Buddha and the teachings of the Second Buddha (Jamgon Tsongkhapa), the stainless views of both the Sutra and Tantra, which are like pure gold.”

A very clear explanation of Vajrayogini by Rinpoche . Reading and listening to the video in this blog explains well. Vajrayogini’s power is her ability to guide practitioners to enlightenment by transforming ordinary experiences, desire, and the ego into spiritual paths. Her form symbolizes the transformation of desire and ego into boundless empathy for all beings. Her practice aims to eradicate the ego, a root cause of suffering and attachment. In return which lead to a more vibrant, kind, and compassionate us.
    Thank you Rinpoche .

In Buddhism, holy relics are the sacred preserved cremated remains of the Buddha, and other enlightened beings. Holy relics are believed to carry the spiritual qualities, compassion, and wisdom of the enlightened being. And it serve as a powerful tool to connect practitioners with the Buddha’s path to enlightenment. Throughout history, relics have played an important role in major world religions and are considered to hold great spiritual significance. They are revered in Buddhist communities around the world. Sadly to these days only a handful of these sites exist today. These holy relic sites are rare. Many Buddhists make it a point to visit these precious relic sites . Merely by touching, seeing, and even thinking about relics can connect anyone with the spiritual power of the Buddha. Each relic is believed to carry a part of the Buddha’s essence, and worshipping them is seen as a way to connect with the Buddha’s wisdom and compassion. These sacred objects, often including bones, hair, robes, and so on are venerated through offerings and prayers, allowing Buddhists to connect with the Buddha’s wisdom and compassion and accumulate merit. Wow China had many holy sites which housed various relics of Buddha Shakyamuni. Just to mentioned some of these holy sites in Chiana such as Tooth relic at Lingguang Temple, Beijing,Grand True Relic Pagoda at Famen Temple, Shaanxi, Rare skull relic enshrined in Foding Palace, Nanjing and Buddha’s bone relic at Ayuwang Temple, Ningbo. Looking the beautiful relics temple and reading this article is a blessing. More so if we go on pilgrimages to these holy sites.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing.

It was through the 6th Panglung Oracle the Dalai Lama had a safe and successful escape from Tibet to India. That’s in 1959, following Dorje Shugden advice and instructions which route to escape. This story in comics form is a great way to let more people know the truth. Senior officials from Monastery eyewitness affidavits signed, they were the monks who travelled together with the Dalai Lama. All these cannot be wrong .A truth and only truth to be shared with.

Believing that the paranormal can be real, is one way to escape the reality we live in and make it a little more interesting. People sometimes want to believe something more is out there than only a platonic routine life. Not everyone believes in ghosts, but there have been plenty of celebrity ghost sightings over the years. Most scientists deny that ghosts exist, but I do believe ghost rather spirits do exist . Ghosts are ingrained in many cultures, with people rising from the dead or being able to communicate from the beyond. The human fascination for the unexplained plays a big role in this world.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing such an interesting videos. Sound scary. Doing prayers and dedicated to them will be fine as long as we don’t’ get involved with them.

Opening Eye Chenrezigis a Buddhist practice and form of Chenrezig focused on healing physical eye problems and developing wisdom eyes. The practice involves prayers and mantras to develop compassion and it was transmitted by Lama Gangchen Rinpoche . This practice is designed to train one’s mind in making life beneficial for all sentient beings through the yoga of the Compassionate Buddha. Well this practice has been effective for those who sincerely had engaged in reciting the mantra consistently.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing methods to heal the defects, problems, and disturbances to our eyes.

Helmut Gassner, is a senior Buddhist monk from Austria also known as Venerable Gelong Jampa. After meeting Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche back then ,his began to have an interest in Buddhism . Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche had impressed him deeply so much so he began studying Tibetan language, Buddhist philosophy, debate and meditation. Throughout his lifetime, he has translated for many high lamas. He translated for HH the 14th Dalai Lama between 1979 and 1995. Helmut Gassner has recognized and value the knowledge of Dorje Shugden . He noticed the positive qualities, acknowledging Dorje Shugden’s significance, and developing a comprehensive, insightful of it. He even received many first-hand accounts of how Dorje Shugden has been extremely useful to the Dalai Lama. Following the Dalai Lama’s move to ban the practice of Dorje Shugden where discrimination and fights happened. The event didn’t bothered him much as he knew the truth that the practice of Dorje Shugden is an integral part of the Gaden Tradition. In 1999 at the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation in Hamburg, Germany, he bravely spoke the truth regarding Dorje Shugden. His devotion to his teacher, the dharma and the truth compelled him to speak up . Interesting read.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing .

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
