My explanation of my feelings for doing these photo shoots

A few weeks ago, I spontaneously had the idea to make a new postcard series. The last postcard series I used Kecharians as models without me. This time I used Kecharians and me!

I made some phone calls to a few Kecharians, and they mobilized immediately to prepare for the photo shoot the very next day! We worked hard, were exhausted, cracked our heads for ideas… but had such good fun! We worked till the crack of dawn. I conceptualized the shoot, scene, costumes, poses, taglines (coming), location and messages I wanted to convey. I wanted to send messges through these pictures…you can look and see what you get from it… art is subjective.

So far, we have had 2 photoshoots… but there are more yet to come. I love creativity! I love people who constantly think from many different angles and come up with something completely out of the box. I like to present Dharma from a creative angle, and I always have. I am not traditional but I have tried hard to be for decades, but in the end decided to be just myself.

I love and appreciate the creativeness of many artists, actors and singers who work so hard to stay in trend. My favorite is of course Madonna..and I love Andy Warhol’s art. In fact, I’m very much inspired by them to come up with this series of post cards…

We shot over 700 photos in two days at various locations arranged by our team at Kechara!! I must thank the team, they are good and fast!!

Do watch the short video below and tell me what you think. It’s a teaser of our photo shoot that was made by one of my students, Ethan. Ethan is creative for sure!

Do you want to be the next star in my post card series? hehehe…

I love bringing spirituality to others in ways that have not been done
before. For some they dare not bring it in a way that is not the conventional
method. I like to bring it differently because I like creativity, art,
expression and new ideas. I don’t like to be static or fixed because nothing is
static or fixed. I will continue to bring Dharma in ways unexplored and always
artistic. That is who I am. Tsem Rinpoche

Sometimes some people have fixed concepts of how I should be. I think I have the
freedom to be or not to be their concepts depending on the situation. I can be
how I want according to the needs of the situation. I am the best judge of me.
As long my motivation is to benefit others, I should be ok in expressing the
Dharma my way.

Alot more pictures will be coming soon! We’re producing a coffee table book with these and many more pictures due out October 24, 2012! You will enjoy this book I am sure. I have a great creative team at Kechara and they are bursting to entertain you with modern, urban dharma photos with contemplative taglines to help you reflect deeper…

Previously I had done cards also which came out very nice. Take a look:

I just love all the photos, it is all so pretty and creative. It appeals to me very much. I just love how fun the shoots are and how real it is being kept. Instead of all being super model and fairy tale like. It shows that everyone and anyone can practice the Dharma, we do have to act, look, or behave in a certain manner to be able to do so.

  6. Lucas Roth on Feb 20, 2013 at 8:38 pm

this is so creative and really funny. I never knew that we can take pictures of dharma so creatively. i wish one day i can be in one of these photo shoots. it is so amazing what Rinpoche can do. we all love you Rinpoche!!!!!!!!!!! please live Long so we can learn the dharma.

  7. Joy on Jan 10, 2013 at 11:47 pm

Gone are the days where Buddhism is only meant for those goody goody meditation folks that goes to bed by 10pm. In today’s modern age, if you want to talk spirituality, it better be appealing enough that they can relate, and Rinpoche seems to know all about this. Rinpoche basically never stops finding new ways to invoke the creative side in us all while inducing it with Dharma. It may all look like fun, cool and happening… yes it is but it was also a lot of hard work, effort and passion.

The thing is if we can put up working outside, with those stress, all those dramas, all those snobbish unreasonable bosses and clients, all for a pay cheque, this seems all the more appealing and meaningful and definitely a lot more fulfilling. The motto is simple… bring happiness to others, give them wisdom and let them incorporate it in to their daily lives with altering their reality too much. Sooner or later, if they have the merits, they will alter it themselves 😉

Buddhist wisdom or we may call it Dharma has always been about improving oneself, what makes it appealing, how to make it appealing to this generation is how we packaged it. There is so many distractions these days, it gets harder and harder to be spiritual today as compared to say 20 years ago. So many are lost without even knowing they are lost. Rinpoche’s mission has always been the same and consistent… benefit others. I guess if we don’t do it, who will? So might as well and have fun while we’re at it!

Rinpoche’s ideas is very creative and fun.

Pictures can tell thousand words, the picture idea of Rinpoche even tells Dharma too.

I especially like the picture which Rinpoche in the middle, and stopping people from fighting, “Outer peace comes from inner peace…give peace a chance..”

We can create peace by taking control of our own mind and emotion.

Thanks Rinpoche. Can’t wait to see all of them!!

Dear Tsem Rinpoche and blog/creative team,

Love the photos! They are awesomen! My favourite is the dharma protector one.

Why not posters as well? Would love to hang some over my wall like movie theater posters.

I heard Tsem Rinpoche fainted whilst on a visit to KFR land. I hope Tsem Rinpoche went for a quick checkup and that everything is alright. I’ve been dedicating my prayers for Tsem Rinpoche’s long life and good health. Please becareful Tsem Rinpoche.

I rejoice for Kechara great progress!

Fun and entertaining videos. Cool pics with cool poses. Nice music. Happy crew and casts.

  13. Diana Pereyda on Oct 5, 2012 at 10:22 pm

WOW, just saw. What talented people, with the magic of Rinpoche!

  14. jamiekhoo on Sep 25, 2012 at 5:26 pm

Just as Chenrezig made that wish to be reborn in the darkest, deepest hells, Rinpoche made a prayer and a promise to bring Dharma to people who would otherwise never even meet with spirituality nor think of it as an option in their lives.

The pictures are huge juxtapositions and contradictions. The heated discussions on Facebook (such as for the “magic levitation trick” photo) are evidence of just how much these images can shake up people’s perceptions – which is precisely what they’re meant to do. Shake us up and out of our little ways of thinking, which says that spirituality must be this or that way…. if not, you’re NOT spiritual.

I love especially the message in every single one of these photos that spirituality is not about where you are or what you’re doing, but how you’re living every moment of your life and with the people around you.

    Peace xxx

  20. Ong Moh Mei on Sep 18, 2012 at 12:32 am

Even though I was there at the shoot, when I look at the outcome, I still go WOW! It’s easy to look at these shots and admire how good they are. But a lot of thoughts and efforts go into them. Most of us have plenty of great ideas and thoughts but how often do we materialize them into something meaningful and benefiting to others. What amazed me is the thing Rinpoche is willing to do for Dharma. People may comment what a monk should or should not do but the way I see it, all these acts are driven deeply by compassion. It takes a lot of compassion to be able to act, to pose, to talk without preconception, to constantly think of ways to reach out to people and to spread Dharma.

  21. June Tang KHJB on Sep 17, 2012 at 11:14 pm

Thank you Rinpoche and KH team for the fantastic videos , creative photos and meaningful message !! Deeper meanings presented in an unconventional way, Rinpoche can always turn everything into something fun and meaningful .We are realy fortunate can meet Rinpoche now ^_^ I like the Bat monk, Pick dharma and not samsara,No matter what the obstacles are, never let go of your spirituality..

  22. DR on Sep 17, 2012 at 10:40 pm

Urban Dharma aka Materialism Spirituality! Haha! That is so Rinpoche! I am so looking forward to seeing the postcards. I am particulary excited to see Abbey Road card.

  23. EricLee KHJB on Sep 17, 2012 at 8:37 pm

  24. sweekeong on Sep 17, 2012 at 11:01 am

  25. Julia Tan on Sep 17, 2012 at 7:40 am

Only one word I can describe about all these pictures – COOL ! These pictures are cool because the messages that Rinpoche sent to us are just so true! I do not think any else where on earth we can find another Lama so creative and artistic like our Rinpoche. Rinpoche just produced all these interesting pictures in just a few hours time. On the shallow point of view, many people cannot accept the extraordinary spiritual culture that Kechara has but deep down inside, many of them are actually amazed and wanted to be like us but hesitated. I am very exciting to see more of these pictures. Nice to give away to friends especially to those who think they are spiritual but they are not and for those who are spiritual but they never think they are. I enjoyed the pictures very much. Thank you Rinpoche!

  26. Martin on Sep 16, 2012 at 8:44 pm

Rinpoche and the Kechara crew not only bring Dharma to the world but do so in such a different and fun way. Whatever it takes for the message to get through. Come to think of it, I do not know of any other Guru today who goes to this extent. I love all of Rinpoche’s expressions and Moh Mei is absolutely fantastic in all these shots.

There are many ‘firsts’ in Kechara and this is most definitely one of the funnier and yet effective ones. Rinpoche is extremely skillful in encapsulating the Buddha’s Teachings and presenting them in a way that is easy to receive.

When it comes to teaching Dharma, this is a game changer.

  27. Wah Ying on Sep 16, 2012 at 4:33 pm

    I like especially:
*Outer peace comes from inner peace…give peace a chance..
*I can fly..freedom is in the mind..

There was a period of my life, I was so so called anti establishment, and “fight” with the almost everyone I meet, from guard of my company, policeman to parking attendant of shopping mall. I wonder why everybody is so wrong and want to fight with me. Later, actually long time after that, recently only I realize actually is me inside do not have peace, I actually fight with myself, so I start the war fire here and there. Peace is from within.

I like a song singing one day I will fly over the mountain and ocean to be a free soul. I long so much for a free me. Always. And I now understand with less burden on my mind, less restrictions I imposed to myself, less “must be” like this and that, most importantly living it now, then I actually is free. Can enjoy the freedom.

Yes, Rinpoche, if I have the merits and privilege I would like to help to produce more of this sending out Dharma messages thru modern and popular art form. Cannot be one of the stars then put me as a crew also never mind. Hehe.

  28. mayy on Sep 16, 2012 at 4:05 pm

I like how Rinpoche’s facial expressions actually gives us the feeling like we’re practically there!

And also, some hidden talents discovered!!! Moh Mei looks damn good in the pictures. I love them! Another of my favourite is the the peace within picture… David really looked like he’s ready to fight hehe

Manjushri is one of the most important figures in Mahayana Buddhism, and is considered a patron deity of wisdom and learning. By practicing Manjushri our wisdom can enhance and improve significantly. Helps help us with our memory.
Through Rinpoche’s sponsorship at Gaden Sharte Monastery many monks had benefited. Rejoice to them receiving the initiation .Sponsoring the Dharma, which refers to supporting the teachings and practices of Buddhism, is considered a meritorious act in Buddhism. Acts of generosity and support for the Dharma are believed to generate positive karma, leading to positive consequences in this life and future lives.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing and explaining it.

David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter and actor and was once a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner. Regarded as among the most influential musicians of the 20th century . The English singer, songwriter and actor David Bowie died at his Lafayette Street home in New York City but in his will he requested his ashes to be spread according to the Buddhist rituals of Bali, Indonesia. He must been to Bali and fall for the beauty of Buddhism and culture of Bali to choose BUDDHIST ritual upon his death. David Bowie made a conscious choice that made perfect sense, not allowing fans and media to focus on his body and his death.

HORRIFYING, feeling sad after watching the video. The way or rather methods of slaughtering of pigs at slaughter house is indeed cruel. Just like human beings, they do feel pain and fear to be slaughter. No living beings would choose to die in pain or a painful death. Hopefully those methods have since been changed to minimize animal suffering. Stop consuming meat and choosing to go meatless or on vegetarian is the best choice.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this to bring awareness of how those poor pigs suffer before been killed.

Hoichi the Earless is the name of a well-known figure from Japanese folklore. His story is well known in Japan. Some centuries ago there lived at Akamagaséki a blind man named Hoichi, who was famed for his skill in recitation and in playing upon the biwa. According to legend, Hoichi was a blind minstrel with an amazing gift for the biwa (a loquat-shaped Japanese lute). Despite his talents, Hoichi was very poor and was forced to live at Amidaji Temple under the care of a friendly priest. There’s an interesting stories behind how he lost his ear to the Samurai and the priest wrote kanji characters all over Hoichi’s body rendered him invisible to the samurai. Hoichi’s ordeal had freed him from the spirit’s power, and he went on to recover from his wounds and become a famous musician. His story become well known and had it appearing in the books as well as in film.

Reading through the Royal Song Of Saraha paints a thousands words . Such a meaningful song or rather deep poem, will be wonderful if I could understand enough some of those words, its more of a deep Dharma teaching to me. This song of existential freedom was composed by the Glorious Master Yogin Saraha and translated in English translation by Herbert V. Guenther.

HH the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche is an erudite, and highly attained lama. Millions of Gelug practitioners from all over monasteries view H H the Gaden Tripa as the supreme leader of their lineage. H H the Gaden Tripa gave a three-day teaching on the sacred Highest Anuttarayoga Tantra practice of Vajrayogini at his Dharma centre in France, Thar Deu Ling. A very special text containing teachings composed by HH Gaden Trisur Rinpoche were also distributed. Incredible , HH Gaden Trisur Rinpoche continue giving teachings at the advanced age of 92. Haven writen a book about the Vajrayogini practice shows us the importance of this practice in this day and age. Merely by reciting her mantra daily without break can gain spiritual attainments, perceive her holy form, and even ascend to her pure land — Kechara Paradise.

In Tibetan Buddhism, refuge and the guru are closely intertwined. Taking refuge in the three jewels expresses the most fundamental connection to Buddhism. Having confronted the limitations of samsara, we are ready for a change. Taking refuge involves seeking protection and guidance from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, with the guru often seen as a living embodiment of these three jewels. The guru’s role is to guide practitioners towards enlightenment by pointing them to the path and helping them overcome obstacles. Refuge is not merely a symbolic act but a deep commitment to transforming one’s mind and life by relying on these sources of inspiration and guidance. Taking refuge doesn’t protect us from problems such as illness, accidents, and other difficulties. Rather, it provides us with knowledge to transform obstacles into opportunities. We learn how to relate to difficulties in a new way, and this protects us from confusion and despair. Reading again to understand better .

Reading through this blog of what life was like for Pastor Jean Ai, during lockdown. The Movement Control Order which began in 2020 reminded me of how I went through during the lock down. Staying alone by myself as the rest of my family member outstation in KL. Not easy after all everything as such as getting foods etc. I do my shopping twice a week having doing all the necessary disinfection and so on. What I did at home during the lock down and how I spent my time, days indeed not easy Do reading, watching videos at Tsem Rinpoche blog , learning and practicing and in-fact did full prostration and mantras recitation daily . It had changed my life since then and had completed 100k . Through a Dharma brother I managed to get hold of some mantras for rolling too. Interesting,…..watching Pastor Jean Ai’s video at how she interact with friends that’s awesome.
Thank you Rinpoche and Jean Ai for this interesting sharing.

n Tibetan Buddhism, prostrations are a way to express deep respect and devotion to the Three Jewels for the Buddha, his teachings (Dharma), and the spiritual community (Sangha). Prostration is a physical act of deep reverence or worship, which offers a range of benefits across spiritual, physical, and mental domains. It can be a form of prayer, a means of expressing devotion. It is a deeply symbolic act that purifies negative actions, accumulates merit, and cultivates humility and compassion. It can be a form of prayer, a means of expressing devotion. This act is believed to be beneficial for practitioners, cultivating humility, eliminating negative thoughts, and accumulating positive karma which is believed to lead to positive future outcomes and spiritual progress. Whether we believe in karma or not, our negative karma increases without purification. Hence its important , to purify our negative karma through the Vajrasattva and prostrations practice. It also seen as a way to purify our negative mind, emotions and thought patterns, such as pride and ego if we do it well . Thus, the practice of purification is one of the most important solutions to our problems and is extremely necessary for everyone of us. It is more important to put our everyday life’s effort into the practice of purification to attain spiritual realization.
The Vajrasattva purification practice, which is more powerful than negative karma. With this practice can prevent us from experiencing the problems that negative karma would otherwise bring us. Reciting the Vajrasattva mantra before going to bed to prevent whatever negative karma we have created that day from multiplying it is an incredibly powerful method that it makes our life very light and easy and keeps us happy and peaceful in our inner life.
Both Vajrasattva practice and prostrations done with good visualizations are indeed very beneficial for practitioners.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing and teachings .

Du Fu (712-770 AD), also known as Tu Fu, was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty, often considered one of the greatest alongside Li Bai. He was a poet-historian and a poet-sage, known for his realistic depictions of human suffering and reflections on the troubled times of his era. His poems, reflecting his personal experiences and the political instability of the time, have had a lasting impact on both Chinese and Japanese literary traditions.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. One of the places everyone should visit- https://bit.ly/2VgsHhK

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
