Beautiful – How could she ever hide her tears – Extraordinary

If this doesn’t touch you and move you, I don’t know what will.

The power of the human spirit is shown at its mightiest by this one little girl. I salute her.

Qian HongYan lost her legs in an accident. Her family in China are poor and couldn’t afford prosthetic legs, so she used a basketball to help her move.

Qian HongYan uses two wooden props to drag herself, and never complains, even though she has worn out six basketballs

She attends her class

 She always smiles

Always cheerful

With the public’s help she is now able to afford a pair of prosthetic legs

Dear everyone,

We love to make excuses about why we failed. Why we forgot. Why we did it again. Why we slipped again… Why we can’t remember. Or how hard something is… We love to eloquently explain why our bodies have limits and can’t tolerate this or that. It all might or might not be true. Yes, we need to take care of our bodies and minds. But not to the point that we JUST end up taking care of our bodies and not doing much else. The purpose of the body is to be beneficial to others. To maintain our bodies is to keep it healthy for others… to serve others. Otherwise just keeping our bodies healthy for the sake of it, doesn’t serve much purpose perhaps.

One thing is for sure, if you really wanted to do something, you will find a way. What you don’t know you will ask and learn. What you have no ideas about, you will be passionate to try and push to succeed. Never sit and say “I don’t know how”. There are so many ways to get information in our 21st century. Information is literally at our fingertips. If you want your project or your life to grow, INFORMATION IS THE KEY. Getting information is the way to go for success. Never say I didn’t know.

I personally have made excuses myself and listened to thousands of excuses, mostly very see through excuses from people over the decades. My point, JUST GET IT DONE. No mistakes, don’t be late, do it well, with a smile and be proud of it when you completed it. The end.

Tsem Rinpoche

Some things to share for you to read. Share with others please:

This was posted by Lian on my blog chat and I found it very useful – MUST READ ONCE A DAY AND SHARE WITH FRIENDS:

The comfort zone is a behavioural state within which a person operates in an anxiety-neutral condition, using a limited set of behaviours to deliver a steady level of performance, usually without a sense of risk (White 2009). [1] A person’s personality can be described by his or her comfort zones. Highly successful persons may routinely step outside their comfort zones, to accomplish what they wish. A comfort zone is a type of mental conditioning that causes a person to create and operate mental boundaries. Such boundaries create an unfounded sense of security. Like inertia, a person who has established a comfort zone in a particular axis of his or her life, will tend to stay within that zone without stepping outside of it. To step outside a comfort zone, a person must experiment with new and different behaviours, and then experience the new and different responses that then occur within their environment.

My thoughts:

How wonderful it is to have a various depts. Each dept works hard towards a goal. Everyone is committed and dedicated because they have absorbed the dharma into their heart. NO ONE NEEDS TO BE PUSHED/REMINDED! That is very important. When we have absorbed the dharma into our hearts then working for Dharma which is working for others become a joy. The dharma counters our COMFORT ZONES. Comfort zones gives us a false security that we are safe because we don’t experience difficulties. We only experience what we are used to and ready for. Unfortunately if we stay in comfort zones, yes we don’t experience any new difficult situations, but we also don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we cannot benefit others much. If Buddha didn’t want us to overcome comfort zones, there would be no Dharma. The whole point of dharma is to overcome all comfort zones daily, weekly and completely. Never treasure comfort zones as they arise from pure selfish self-deceptive mind.  ~Tsem Rinpoche

Buddha’s full and complete enlightenment is a solid testament to the destruction of all comfort zones within Himself and it is the goal of all who follow Buddha and wish to have permanent happiness.~Tsem Rinpoche

All failures, disappointments, anger, loss of respect, inconsistencies, fear, loss, and pain arise from protecting our deceptive comfort zones. Failure of marriage and instilling good qualities in our children. Failure to do well in business. Failure in school. Failure with friends. Failure with our goals and even failure in our dharma centre’s growth all arise from comfort zones. When we don’t do our work well and we leave it to others, then we degenerate. It infects others and makes them disheartened. Then less & less people do their responsibilities. Family, children, city, country, dharma centres all fall apart. Comfort zones all arise from the purely deceptive selfish mind. To protect our comfort zones is to say you want failure and you don’t care about others and yourself. Overcoming comfort zones is the key to all success in secular and dharma goals. It is the goal of any human to become better and overcoming comfort zones w/o delay is the key.~Tsem Rinpoche

    Dear Rinpoche,

She made the headlines in recent years too. She was nicknamed as the ‘fish’ girl now. The latest, she took part of China’s swimming team at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. So proud of her and I hope she will continue to live a fulfilled life. Never use excuses (or even achievements) to stop or but just keep going and inspire many until we expire.

Very touching article, at the age of learning to understand things and happily play around, the poor little girl has lost her legs in an accident. The tragedy tremendously changes the faith of the girl. I felt very sad to see the photos of the little girls moving around with an old basketball and the wooden pads.

Life would have been very challenging and though for their parents to lift the little girl up. What puzzled me was her attitude, she didn’t see fear and obstacles in her disability, she was brave, strong all the way irony of life to face of great adversity and became successful athlete. I believe God was with her, push her to the right path to achieve her goals and to bring her happiness throughout her life.

Thank you for the great inspiring sharing. However we cannot avoid the unexpected events in our lives because it is these events that challenge our complacency in life.

To be in the state of Qian Hongyan, most probably I’ll just give up right away. Yet this girl, might be weak and vulnerable but she has a strong and big heart and live her day as usual.

To be challenged and get back on our feet is what we have to learn all along. There’s no failure but we fail ourselves. To go beyond our own comfort zone, we are bound to get hit back and fail and fall, but if we are able to go through all that, looking back at those times we would just be like “Since I have gone through all those, what could be even worst?”

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this post for all of us.

Qian Hong Yan is absolutely a very loving and determined little girl. She didn’t give up on herself even though she knew that she will not be able to walk and run like the other kids anymore. I’m very glad that with the public’s help, she was able to afford a pair of prosthetic legs. She has taught us the lessons in life, the world doesn’t end just because you do not have a pair of hands or legs, as long as you’re alive, as long as your heart is still beating, there’s nothing impossible. Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.

I just came across an update to this story. What an amazing girl she has turned out to be, despite her physical challenges. How inspirational:

In 2005, after attention in the Chinese press, Qian traveled to Beijing to receive free artificial limbs at the China Rehabilitation Research Center, a center that has been providing help to the disabled in China for over 20 years.

Xinhua reports that Qian was born to an impoverished family, and that she had to accept that when her medical treatment ended in 2007, she would not be able to continue her education with her peers. She was 11-years-old.

However, Qian found other opportunities. She joined a local swimming club for the disabled, the first of its kind in the country, sponsored by the Yunnan Provincial Federation of the Disabled.

At first, she found it difficult.

“I had to give much more than other kids when I learned to swim,” Qian told China Daily in 2011. “It seemed there was no way I could float in the water. I was choked.”

However, she went on to become a successful athlete, training for four hours every day. She hopes to one day win medals for her country in the Paralympic Games.

This week, she returned to the China Rehabilitation Research Center in Beijing. Now 18 years old, she is ready for her adult prosthetics.

Qian Hongyan, the so-called “basketball girl,” has become something of a celebrity in China. Reports on the progress of her artificial limbs make national news. Her fame has even spread abroad, with photographs of her becoming viral sensations on Facebook.

Her success may mark the changing fortunes of China’s disabled. “In the past,” Her coach, Li Ke-qiang, told the BBC in 2008, “people despised the disabled. They thought they were all beggars, just asking for money.”

“But now, when they see disabled swimmers like these, they can see how hard they’re driving themselves. And that’s a start.”

Reading her story, here I am thinking how strong and honest she is. The feeling of heavy weight from the bottom of my heart – regard of what I am thinking it just a part that come from her story and this won’t help her. What was her thought, what was her feeling, what give her the strength and what was her motivation, all went through my head. What she is going through is beyond my own imagination, how difficult it is for her then, how tough will it be for her in the future but she is living it.

This Beautiful unfortunate little girl still has very high spirits in her self. May god bless her..

I’ve read the article twice and both times, I came up with ‘Triumph’. From Hong Yan’s smile, one could feel genuine triumph over adversities faced by her. She is very natural with her movements and smiles, which shows that she is comfortable and confident with her situation. Even having to learn to walk with new legs, I see only willingness to learn something new. Truly beautiful in and out. A winner who overcomes whatever boundaries with a smile from the heart.
What more, she is also benefitting all who reads her story. What have we with complete bodies have to complain about stepping beyond our comfort zones. Life is but transient, so wherever, whenever and however we can, we should be using our bodies for beneficial deeds. May I overcome my comfort zones swiftly and completely in this lifetime.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful and inspiring story Rinpoche. This poor young girl lost her legs at such a young age. That is so sad. Even so, she continued to live life as a normal girl and she can always smile. That is something that the modern society lacks, the ability to give a smile even when in times of suffering. People in this day and age would become sad over such small and trivial things. If they lose their cheap nokia phone, they would cry for days. If they lost a job, they would feel as if they had lost their lives. While we are healthy, we should do more to benefit others.

Actually, my school actually used this girl as an inspiration for the students. Most of the students thought it was completely rubbish, but some contemplated and said either, “Wow, I am really lucky.” or “I should really do more in life.”

This is indeed one beautiful girl. One of the most beautiful. I wish more of humanity will be more like her.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the inspiring story of Qian HongYan. She has set a good example to many of us that being incomplete should not stop us to smile and stay in joyous mind.

We should use our body, energy, effort and time to benefits others instead of always satisfying our needs or desire.

  19. Lyn Phng on Jun 30, 2012 at 2:33 pm

I have children and one of them is about the same age as little Qian. I look at her and I think that as a parent do I have what it takes to bring up and nurture such an imperfect being. Then I catch myself and think how selfish I am for thinking that way. This beautiful girl’s spirit cannot be destroyed and all children have that same spirit inherently and as parents it is up to us to nurture that spirit. So who am I to judge and feel pity for a child with such a disability, which in fact I should rejoice how the child can overcome her challenges and rise beyond her situation.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for sharing this very encouraging story of Qian Hongyan. She is the mirror to all of us, to be hopeful always. Regardless of her physical incompleteness she continue to live her life and study.
    It is very touching….
When I first saw the picture, it’s ache my heart. Thinking my older brother back home. He lost his right hand in an accident when he was 14 years old. At first he was so shy, his wearing jacket always for 2 years. After he learned to play guitar ( using the plastic as finger to touch the string) all the shyness gone and he became more creative in many ways.
Qian Hongyan situation is more hard than my brother, I salute you girl…..

    God bless you….

Qian Hongyan teaches us about the power of choice. The events of life happens around us. Sometimes it is “good” and sometimes,it is “bad”. From the example of Hongyan, I learn that the importance is in the choice we make when responding to any situation. That will determine the action of body, speech and mind that follow the occurrence of the event. This will in turn influence that karma that we create and accumulate. The choice to take a positive and constructive stand in the face of any situation will develop a habit and attitude that is beneficial like in the case of Hongyan. The benefit Hongyan created not only made her life easier and more joyful, her choice to live on with a smile on her face is a reflection of love towards the people around her: making it easier for everyone else to cope with her disaster. Lastly, Hongyan’s choice also benefited many strangers like us who has the opportunity to know about and be inspired by her story.

May the sacrifice that Hongyan made and the lesson she generously show us cause us to live with gratitude and conscious appreciation for the blessing we have received. May we all also learn to make something good arise from undesirable conditions.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing another impactful teaching. Thank you Hongyan for being our teacher with your life example.

So sad to learn that such a young girl has to suffer such pain and yet she still smiles and just gets on with life without complaints or whatsoever. It is also amazing how she just smiles and smiles and smiles and never shed tears. What i have learnt from this post is that we should not complain on such little things and just get on with life and just aim for the bigger things in life.

A couple of years ago, I would wake up in the morning, look at myself in the mirror and see a body I hated. If I was feeling particularly loathsome that day, seeing my reflection would be enough to send me into a tailspin. It would be a whole day of depression because I had looked in the mirror and seen that I would never be a Victoria’s Secret model.

Petty? Of course. But it was my whole world in those days. It consumed me. And I’m willing to bet there are millions more girls like me out there – beautiful girls who feel they need to starve themselves into a thinness or perform drastic surgeries on themselves to achieve some kind of perfect beauty.

Then there is this little girl, a totally imperfect physical body but a perfect face full of smiles. And you think, what does she have that I don’t? Some of the happiest people I know or have come across are the people who have the least. A friend, for example, used to be a horse jockey. One day, in a terrible freak accident, he got knocked off his horse and fell so badly that he would be forever paralysed from the waist down. He cannot even sit up unassisted now. And yet, he has never uttered a single complaint – even his family have been amazed at just how little he has ever shown of sadness. His face is bright and his smile lights up a room. Recently he got sponsorship for a motorised wheelchair and he gets himself around wherever he needs to. He adjusted and found peace again where he is. How many of us can really say that, wherever we are and whatever we’re like?

A few months ago, I also saw THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW579icDRSA&feature=related
About an incredibly inspirational, motivational speaker Nick Vujicic, who not only ha no legs, but also has no arms. But look at how much strength and hope he brings to people – just by being who he is. He’s a bigger, more capable person than many of us could ever be because he’s making the best of everything he has, while the rest of us sit and moan about everything we don’t have.

  30. Sharon Saw on Jun 28, 2012 at 2:36 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for sharing this inspiring post. Anyone who has their full faculties and yet feel sorry for themselves should look at this girl. There are so many amazing people out there who overcome their physical shortcomings, like Nick Vujicic (http://youtu.be/KxjiEi2Eywk).

When i see these people who are bursting with positive energy, i am inspired to do more. It is really evidence of how practising patience and enthusiastic perseverance, two of the 6 perfections, that we can move to a different level and inspire others.

What i find interesting about comfort zones is that thanks to Rinpoche’s guidance, we often break out of our comfort zones and go into uncomfortable territory, but eventually that becomes a new comfort zone. As soon as we realise that we have moved into this new comfort zone, we should be working to break out of that one too.. without always waiting to be pushed… and we should self-propel ourselves and progress on the path until all our barriers are removed.

What is so evident from the pictures is that you will not see an “I give up” attitude or look from Qian Hong Yan. In fact, from getting “out of the basketball” to trying, practising and exercising with her new pair of prosthetic legs is a form of getting out of her comfort zone. I think if it was for some others and they were used to the basketball, they wouldn’t want to endure and go through all the intense training to practise walking in prosthetics. They’d rather say in their comfort and continue living their life just the way it is.

At her age, Qian Hong Yan shows much more courage, strength, resilience and determination than many adults that I know. It may be that in her tender age, it is easier to let go and re-habituate as opposed to someone who would have to undergo this in a much later part of their life and have had much more habituations and a image to uphold. However, whatever the situation is, Qian Hong remains optimistic and in a cheerful spirit, there is no sulking, no complaining, but she just does what she has to do to get on with life.

Some of us are in perfect physical condition, blessed with everything that we could have in life, and yet still don’t make the most of it, and live life as if the world owes them.
Reading this should be your inspiration in telling all of us to shut up, stop complaining, and do what you have to do to make a success out of our lives.

Nothing is impossible, unless we make it impossible for ourselves.

Thank you for such a beautiful sharing, Rinpoche.

    Love,
    Carmen.

This little girl really touches my heart. She is beautiful as she appreciates life more than anyone does despite her mishaps. I feel ‘little’ and ashamed of living in a comfort zone yet complain always. I truly salute to her

I can’t imagine how the little girl could walk with the basketball supporting her only ‘half body’ before getting her prosthetic leg fixed. Life was tough for her, she chose to face it & still live a normal life!

Her spirit is truly inspiring. People who have complete limbs, body, should not have complaint about things we have or don’t have. We have everything in comfort zone, and let’s get up & achieve more in life!

Beautiful little girl on a basketball,
Swinging along on your wooden props,
A brave and carefree smile on your face.

    Your grit and indomitable will
    Overwhelms me, moves me,
    Your ‘never say die’ look,
    Challenges me, inspires me.

May I learn to fly fearlessly,
Like you, out of my comfort zone.

By putting my self in this little girl situation i can barely understand how difficult it is to live the life like that, even for a day,and im thank god for everything i have in my life,it was very-very lucky for many of us,that we were born healthy, yet still we complaint, when thing not going as what we plan,or when we compare ourself to other around us,that are better luck then us,often i heard people say ” this is not fair” ! What happen to this girl was not fair at all,but i do believe in karma, what ever the reason is,i really hope that this girl will continue to live her life with determination, may no words can put her down, and that people around her always support her.

  40. Jeffrey Gan on Jun 27, 2012 at 8:22 pm

We all have the ability to endure and achieve anything in our life. How we think or react on a particular situation will have different results, it really depends on how we think. If we react with self pity and blame then we will be a person full of anger, sadness, bitterness and etc. Accept the circumstances that we face and move on with life no matter how hard it is.

Qian Hongyan’s life reminds us of how lucky we are to have not just having our full faculties but also have a very comfortable life. We tend to complain of the slightest things that discomfort us in life because we are so comfortable at we are and we thought that we can have all the comforts in the world for the rest of our life and totally ignoring the fact that nothing is permanent. Qian Hongyan is poor and don’t have a choice physically but she chose to move on with her life in her condition and she is a good example of someone who has nothing yet she lived life as if she has everything.

    Thank You Rinpoche.

  41. Ethan Chu on Jun 27, 2012 at 8:15 pm

Most of the time we think that we can only work with what we have. We set a limit on ourselves… hence, we build this beautiful comfort zone for our resting arms… We still have dreams but when things get too hard, we look for other ways.. but little do we know the ways that we usually “accustomed to” is our old methods that set us up to fail again and again. It is easy to have new ideas but if we are still using the old method, most likely we’ll achieve the same result.

Just like Qian Hongyan, perhaps all she ever wanted is just a pair of legs to walk like anyone else. Maybe thats a dream, but by focusing on what she has and make it work, she finally achieve that dream. Just imagine if she gave up on her body? Not only she wouldn’t even want to walk for the rest of her lives, probably she hated life already.

And I dont think she’ll just stop there. With determination, I am sure she will achieve more with her physical body regardless what her condition is. So she mastered the old method and now the new. That is how she improves herself and become a living example for us all.

  42. Milly on Jun 27, 2012 at 7:50 pm

When I see Qian Hong Yan with the basketball, my first thought was such a brave young girl. Despite her physical handicap, she doesn’t deprive herself of all the activities a young person would enjoy. I am happy that she has the prosthetic legs to help her move around now. This teaches us that despite adversities, we must be mentally strong and accept our condition just like this gutsy young girl.

This is a truly inspirational story. I see her overcome with smile and cheerful way. She continue her life with such determination. She did’t give up by giving excuse of her lost leg. This remind me that how many difficulty and failure I encounter and just give up by giving stupid excuses. I feel so ashamed.
Comfort zones all arise from the purely deceptive selfish mind. Overcoming comfort zones is the key to all success in secular and dharma goals. I will always put this in mind. Thank you Rinpoche

Thank you rinpoche for sharing this inspirational post. I admit that we haveto overcome our comfort zones in order to progressin both secularand spiritual aspects. We all prefer to stay at “present ” condition, thinking that it is “permanent”, thus, refuse to change. I must remind myself regarding this post whenever I encounter difficulties in daily life and to reduce my self- cherishing mind when challenging circumstances arise.

  53. Victor Phang on Jun 27, 2012 at 9:12 am

    Dear Rinpoche:
Thanks for sharing. A small little girl like Qian had successfully show us physical disability is not a barrier at all to do or achieve anything. Her strong mind is the key element to keep her living as a normal person. Her action is a very obvious and significant proof that physical disability is NOT the “criterion” to be labelled as “disable people” but weak mind does.

People who lives in comfort zone is not physically disability but mentally deficiency – shortage of discipline, determination, braveness and wisdom. Some times I thought perhaps people without Dharma knowledge should be very difficult or impossible to step out from comfort zone as the way they value and view of life is still very worldly but unfortunately I was wrong. Even though we have the opportunity to learn, listen and get connected to Dharma but do not act, practice and implement the Dharma knowledge into our daily activities then that is no different between people who has chance to meet Dharma and who don’t know Dharma at all.

Since we fully aware that our body is the closest impermanent thing we have in life then just follow what Rinpoche said use it completely to benefit others. Doesn’t matter how is our body structure as long as our mind remain stable, strong and positive really the impossibility is nothing. Last night when I was reading a Dharma book in my hotel room (currently I’m on biz trip), I realized the real and only obstacle in learning Dharma is our MIND not the biz meetings, dinner appointments, travel and etc… etc… so from now onward we should pray to protector for removing “mind” obstacles and not anything else.

    Thank you again for sharing.
    Take good care.
    With love,
    VP

Reading HongYan’s story reminds me of a Malaysian lady whom I had the good fortune to talk to afew months ago. I was on the panel of judges for a women’s award and she was one of the finalist. Born to a very poor family and doesn’t have legs at birth. What is inspiring is that she begged her mother to send her to a normal school (as she wanted to be with the other ‘normal’ kids)instead of school for the handicap, went on to university (only then her case was highlighted and the university raised funds for her prosthetic legs), worked extremely hard and later became a successful entrepreneur and even got married!

There was no bitterness or self pity when she talked about herself, she wasn’t even using her handicap as a means to attract attention. She just talked as a matter of factly. So awe inspiring. She was unanimously voted in as the Most Inspiring Women.

She is another classic example of ‘mind over body’ ie our mind and body are not one. The mind has no limitation unlike that of a body. Strong determination based on hard work is able to conquer any challenges and break all the limitations.

This little girl is an inspiration to all because even though she is disabled through an accident, she does not give up life and continued on with joy and happiness. She made use of what she had until she has assistance of a set of donated prosthetic legs. This story is truly in line with the saying “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade!”

If I put myself in her situation, I am not sure I could be as strong as her. Maybe through time I would be able to accept reality. Since we have all we have in a perfect human body, it would be a shame if we do not use it to its full potential. If this girl can do it, why can’t I do more in my life? Something to ponder.

We are comfortable at where we are because we do not want to change. Change comes with risks. So, the question is whether we are willing to risk our life to for a change. When we make a choice to change, then there will be different results. You are taking charge of your life and making it interesting.

i admire her spirit and determination to live on a lot. Losing both of her limbs did not made her give up on herself while instead of that, she braved herself with her new situation and adjusted very well to her new self as shown in the pictures. This teaches me not to just give up on anything because all my problems are far more smaller than what she has to endure! Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this!

  58. Elena on Jun 27, 2012 at 1:50 am

    Rinpoche,

What struck me about this article was:

    1) the mind is separate from the body. The body might be ‘faulty’ but the mind is very resilient, and it is up to us what we make of our situations. If we fail, if we are depressed, it is because we choose to fail and be depressed

    2) “Otherwise just keeping our bodies healthy for the sake of it, doesn’t serve much purpose perhaps” – that moved me. Animals can take care of their bodies; in fact, they spend their whole lifetime taking care of their bodies and the desires of their body. Then a human comes along, and sends them to the slaughterhouse and that’s it, their life is over.

What is the point of taking care of our bodies for the sake of taking care of it, when we can’t take it with us to our next life? So much time and effort is wasted in that way…and sometimes, after all of that effort, we can still get into accidents which are beyond our control! At the time, will we mourn lost opportunities? Was it worth it to stay in our comfort zones?

    3) how lucky I am to have a perfect human body with all of my mental faculties intact. I might have health problems but actually, I still consider my body perfect because all of my limbs are intact and I am mobile. I told Rinpoche once before that I view my illnesses as blessings in disguise and I really did mean it. Unlike others, I get reminders from time to time about my own mortality, and the importance of doing Dharma now

    Thank you,
    Jean Ai

I would absolutely loved to look into the mind of this beautiful girl, to know her realities, her experience, the way she views life, her physical condition…there’s so much to learn from this young lady. I truly belief whatever we choose to focus on is what we will experience and will be our reality. If we choose to focus on what we dont have, don’t get, and all the other negative thoughts, that’s exactly how our experience of our life will be.

In this physical condition, this young lady could still smile, be so cheerful which goes to show that it’s not about the body which we derive happiness from but it’s in our mind. This young lady has an absolutely beautiful mind!

Qian HongYan is unlucky due to the accident that lead to the loss of her legs. Hong Yan is lucky in that she has found a way to move around as normal as she could with just a ball! Amazing! I am moved by the kind samaritans who donated a pair of prosthetic legs to enable Hong Yan to move around more ‘normally’ than before.
I am ashamed that I look at things worse off than little Hong Yan sometimes. I am sure we can all learn a thing or two from little Hong Yan.

We are very fortunate. Hence it is a good reminder to everyone that before we give up, we should think of the difficulties/obstacles that Qian Hong Yan has to go through.
It’s easy to fail but it takes a great deal of effort to try to overcome all obstacles.

  63. Doreen Teoh on Jun 27, 2012 at 12:35 am

I see that Hong Yan does suffer, even she smiles, but she never make her situation to be soar and pitiful, She does takes her condition as it, and make no excuses not to do things. Thankful to the public’s donation and help she is now able to afford a pair of prosthetic legs. It is all in the mind. We can change it.

Qian HongYan’s strong, cheerful and positive character really put me to shame. At such young age, without a pair of legs and yet she could do things normal children and even adult like us would take it for granted. She commands my deepest respect for her fearlessness and perseverance.

We are living in comfort zone without realising it. Our habituation had made it very difficult for us to even want to change for the better. Qian HongYan had proven us wrong! We just got to do it if we are serious about improving ourselves. We really got to push ourselves if we want to see improvement in our spiritual practice.

Thank You Rinpoche for this post. Qian HongYan is an inspiration to many of us.

Precious human rebirth with all the 8 freedoms and 10 endowments are so so very rare. Best we do dharma before we lose this opportune condition. We are on breath away from losing our lives. I truly admire her spirit to make do with what has happened and carry on. The human determination and spirit is an amazing thing, it can create the causes to be the pinnacle of what a human can be a Buddha and also create the causes to further our samsara. The choice is really in our hands.

  67. Gim Lee on Jun 27, 2012 at 12:13 am

Looking at this brave girl Qian Hongyan, it reminds me of the sayings “I complained I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet.”

We mostly focus on our own discomforts, problems and didn’t notice that everyone else also has discomforts and problems. Everyone is the same, we all want happiness. Selfishly we’ll think that our problems are the most important thing that existed in this world… and our own happiness matters most to the world…

Now is the time we LOOK OUT and pay attention to others’ needs; now is the time we MOVE OUT of our comfort zones and take charge.

Realizing the true fact that a lot of us always find excuses to cover ourselves on our laziness, failures, not able to accomplish certain tasks and etc. We all realize it but still keep doing it and chose to ignore it. Reading the article make me feel shameful. Beautiful little HongYan faced reality positively and moving forward bravely. A very good role model and she is willingly moving all the way out from her comfort zone. But for many of us, we are being selective and we chose to move based on our on comfort level (not all the way out). I remember guru always mention to us don’t just talk but act. Only by stepping outside our comfort zone, taking up the risk and dare to challenge can bring us further and benefit more people. I like this “JUST GET IT DONE. No mistakes, don’t be late, do it well, with a smile and be proud for it when you completed it.”

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this powerful article.
    Take good care 🙂

We always give excuses to ourselves to fail. We always say we cannot, we cannot, we cannot. Look at this little girl, she has lost her legs due to poverty, she could not afford the prosthetic leg, so she uses what she could to walk. She does not use her disability as an excuse to seek for sympathy or allow herself to fail.

It is so true that if we want something, we will work our ways to get it done. We have to have passion and believe strongly in the things we pursue. Develop this passion and belief, then go all the way.

Don’t sit around, just wishing and hoping. Go and do it, good things will happen.

It is heart breaking to see this beautiful girl suffering so much inconvenience and at the same time very inspiring how nothing stops her from living as normally as she can. I truly thank all the generous people who gifted her with prosthetic legs. Now she learns again.

The teachings from Rinpoches reinforces how we should lead our lives, not to complain and find laziness in not making our lives useful especially when we are endowed with a body with full operating faculties.

The power of will to push further and further into the unknown to test ourselves and get out of our comfort zones is what I learnt from this young girl and how we will get help to achieve our goals.

Dharma teaches this and we must live in Dharma to achieve great purpose with our lives.

Qian Hong Yan and many others like her show us point blank that whether life is cruel or not, it really depends on ourselves. She has every reason to be bitter, to give up, to stagnate, to not try harder… but she didn’t, and with a genuinely happy smile. Whereas i had a friend who seemed to have it all, definitely more than what Hong Yan has, but she committed suicide when she was 24.

I attended a workshop recently and was told that generally when we reach a certain age, we tend to either regenerate or stagnate i.e. push through our comfort zones to have another burst of growth like how young people do, or stay in the comfort zone and not grow anymore. but i think this kind of mentality can set in at any age. I think in some instances, we are too afraid to make mistakes and fail and rather stay in our familiar cave where we know we are safe. But a safer way of thinking would be to prepare for the day our cave gets flooded!

Thank you Tsem Rinpoche for this moving post. I will remember the “basketball girl” whenever i feel like giving up or not trying, and push myself to continuously break out or broaden my comfort zone.

This little girl’s story is really touching. Her disability did not hinder her from moving around, going to school or live her day happily. She is so creative that she used a basketball to move around.

The only disability in life is a bad attitudes. – Scott Hamilton. Our laziness, ignorance, not willing to change, easily give up, don’t want to put in extra efforts and many many others bad attitudes that cos us failed in our life, job, family matters and relationship.

Physical disability is not an obstacles, sometimes it is a strength that give the power and determination to a person to achieve higher. There are many famous disable people in the world such as Albert Eistein (Till the age of three he could not speak and was severely dyslexic and autistic), Thomas Edison (was partially deaf and had a learning disability as a child), Nick Vujicic, born with no limbs and others,

We always take for granted that we will have a perfect human body forever. And give excuse that will only do dharma work when retired, now is the time to make lots of money. Impermanence is happening everyday. We don’t even know whether we still have tomorrow. Therefore, whatever we want to do, we must do now and do not wait for tomorrow.

  76. Li Kim on Jun 27, 2012 at 12:00 am

This is truly an inspirational story. And she is so young. Her face is full of life and tenacity. What she has endured is much more than many who complain about their lives who indeed have so much more and complete bodies. We who have a complete physical form should feel ashamed for ever complaining for the minute things we have suffered. It is so true that our body should be used to benefit others and not just for self-ingulging pleasures.

I rejoice now that she has a pair of prosthetic legs and will be able to achieve more in her life. I love the pictures for all the happiness and life on her beautiful face.

A little girl with a mind like steel! Hong Yan is an outstanding example of ‘making the best of what we have’. Instead of feeling pity about her misfortune, she had chosen to face her disability and get on with life.

What stood out for me is the smile on her face when she was clearly struggling without legs and she didn’t compare her fate with the rest of her friends who is enjoying perfect health.

In a not-so-distant future, I am sure we will hear more of Hong Yan as she continues her life journey with such determination that shame most of us.

  79. Mc on Jun 26, 2012 at 11:44 pm

It can and should be as simple as that i,e, Jut Get It Done. No ifs and buts, no excuses and self doubts and so on. Thus little girl did not focus on her limitations and in fact with the correct attitude she ended up having less limitations than those of us with no excuse and barriers other than the limitations we impose on ourselves.

Whether our mind is an ally or the enemy lies in our attitude.

“JUST GET IT DONE. No mistakes, don’t be late, do it well, with a smile and be proud for it when you completed it. The end”

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for posting such an inspiring story. Here we are with all faculties intact yet complaining about every little thing that does not go our way. What about little HongYan?

She seems very happy and determined not too let her handicap in any way deter her from going about with her routine. If anything like this happened to any one of us, we will definitely want to end our lives or hide like hermit crabs.

HongYan is such an inspiration for all. Talk about comfort zones. We are not even able to accept what little change in life’s situation not alone to mention any changes in our physical appearances for the worse. One little pimple appearing on the face and we hide inside our room until the pimple disappears!

Its ok for little Hong Yan to complain and even feel angry at times but for people like us we just keep coming up with all sorts of excuses.

We should be very thankful for what we still have and stop complaining and coming up with loads of excuses after reading this.

I scrolled thru the comments and what Andrew struck a chord in me. I too am ashamed to say that many times, when I pass by the physically challenged, I dont look twice. Especially when i see the beggars on the street. When I was younger, my elders always told me that these people were from a “scam” and best not to give them any money. I suppose they could be right some of the time, but looking back on those days, I know that some of them were probably physically handicapped, and needed the help.

Likewise Qian Hongyan. Yes she is physically challenged like many others, but what I find inspiring is that she doesnt let any of that stop her. She still smiles. She still plays on the swing like other kids. She gets around. She goes to school. She behaves like a normal person who doesnt have her disadvantages.

How many adults do you know who have had a life-changing accident and they are never the same again? They look at the world from their sorry and depressive state, not realising that it doesnt have to be that way? Even worse, how many adults do you know who have everything in the world yet they moan and complain away? They should all read this story.

Qian Hongyan’s story is inspiring and I am glad to see she has a sponsor for a set of prosthetic legs. With her spirit, attitude and determination, she deserves it. Reading her story, it made me happy. I hope she has a long, happy and successful life.

  82. Paul Yap on Jun 26, 2012 at 11:43 pm

Qian has a very strong determination to live and not grumble how unfair live is to her. Her story reminds me of another man, whose name is Nick Vujicic, has lost both hands and legs, but becoming a popular motivational speaker who moves the world. These Heroes remind us continuously, with a health body and mind, we can do whatever we want, and set no boundaries and limit to our sky.

Our small little failure and self created delusion mind has continuously failed us and crippled us from within, the pain ran deep inside our soul forever, which is far more destructive than a handicapped person like Qian and Nick Vujicic.

Their stories remind us to be contented with what we have and not complaining what we don’t have. Determination in Qian has made her a swimmer and took Nick Vujicic all over the world giving motivational speech, which is far more popular and useful than any other healthy person.

Lets stand straight today and clear our mind, don’t let the deluded lazy mind failed us physically, cos our mind is much more than just physical!

  83. lucy yap on Jun 26, 2012 at 11:31 pm

A truly shining example to others even though only eight year old. Her strong will to overcome her obstacles after losing her legs in a accident is inspiring and amazing! Now I realized how pampered and lucky I am!A very valuable lesson learnt not to complain and get out of my comfort zone.Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this with us.

  84. Cynthia Lee on Jun 26, 2012 at 11:29 pm

I like her spirit and determination. She does not let her disability stop her from living and doing things. It does not bring her down and be unhappy. This is truly inspiring as some of us allow small matters upset us.

We all have disabilities in one way or another. It can be some disabilities which is associated with bad health, lack of skills or simply the resistant to do something beyond our usual abilities.

Our body is just a vessel. Our minds is what fuels our body. Our body in turn should be used to benefit us and others just like how a car is used to take us from A-Z, in this case it would be to a better place.

I remember a teaching from Rinpoche is that we should not let our bodies control our minds but we should use our bodies to TRAIN our minds.

  85. Mei Fong on Jun 26, 2012 at 11:17 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this inspiring story. Qian is a courage’s girl. She never gives up hope regardless the difficulties she have to face in her daily lives. I respect this girl.

  86. Henry ooi on Jun 26, 2012 at 10:55 pm

With one hand I covered the lower half of HongYan’s body and look at her upper half and her beautiful smile. She looked like any normal happy child with my hand still covered. Then I removed my hand and look at her in full and I still see a cheerful young girl who shows no pain but full of zest and determination. I asked myself if I were her would I still have her cheerful disposition? Probably not. This would serve as a reminder for me to stop complaining each time when I face mental and physical challenges.

This is a truly inspirational example for our children. I have shown these pictures to my children and asked them to read what Rinpoche writes here.

  87. Lili ng on Jun 26, 2012 at 10:53 pm

Yes,nothing is impossible if we really want to do something,if we put in all our effort, with all the resourses available,at least we can still say I have tried rather than stop at saying I can’t ,but most times we are just too comfortable to push ourselves out frm the zone we are comfortable in,we can be our own worst enemie at most times, not willing to do or even try anything different, compare to those who are less fortunate,we are able to do and contribute so much more,it may not be easy but can be done gradually, pushing myself to my limit.

  88. nicholas on Jun 26, 2012 at 10:40 pm

Qian Hong Yan is truly inspired. You still able to see her beautiful smile even though she’s in such condition. Her beauty is her determination, not giving up, persistent. At such a young age she has a strong driven soul that not give her any excuses to stay back but continue her life and I’m very sure she will make a success for her future.

Feel shame for whatever reason I gave to myself not to push myself and easily gave up when difficulty arises. This young lady shown and proven by making the choice to change the negative thought for positive action.

What else to complaint, whatever I face can never be compared with HongYan situation and I just need to push myself to “JUST DO IT” and “DO IT RIGHT”!

  89. Albert Ratchaga on Jun 26, 2012 at 10:35 pm

Many of us had been caught in our comfort zone and we keep on blaming the outsiders when things went wrong that affected our comfort zone, many things in our life that we consider big deal is actually nothing when compare to what this little girl is going through, yes, she is a little girl, but her mindset is even much tougher than lots more people in today’s world.

We are so fortunate as compare to her, we are physically healthy and can do whatever things that we like which Hong Yan doesn’t has the chance to do so, kids are normally being very demanding especially when they saw what other kids have and they don’t have, but look at Hong Yan, she is a kid too, she cannot run around like others, many things she misses out due to her lost of legs, but she didn’t complain or just sit down, stay sad and do nothing, she still live a normal life, play with friends, go to school, she doesn’t has the kind of comfort zone like we do, but she keep challenging her situation, and she made it.

Everyday are the same, everyone face difficulties, but it’s all depends on how we work on it, whether with a positive thinking or negative thinking, it is all up to how our own mind working. When we have a low endurance of things, which shows how high our comfort zone is. Qian Hong Yan has totally put me in shame, she has clearly shows me that how much smaller her body is, and how great her mind is as compare to me.

Dear Rinpoche, I just showed my sis’ lil monsters this inspirational blog post. They were stunned beyond words. I explained to them how fortunate they are to be fully limbed and yet they are complaining so much. After explaining to them that they can do much more and hopefully they would be to serve the Dharma and Rinpoche in future.

I have nothing to complain about my life. I’m fully bodied. I have a family whom loves me unconditionally. Yet I still find excuses not to do more for Dharma. I’m too comfortable in my comfort zone. It is time to change. And it all begins with me. It is time to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone. Thank you Rinpoche for the words of wisdom. I have read her news and find out that little Qian HongYan loves swimming! This is the story:
“The seventh national special sports-meeting was held in Kunming in May 2007 . Qian HongYan went to watch the games every day and seeing the handicapped players struggle in the matches deeply moved her. After the sports meeting, Qian HongYan was determined to join in the special swimming club. She and her parents went to consult the opportunity with Zhang Honghu, a well-known coach who has trained many handicapped swimming champions. Then, Qian HongYan began her life in the swimming club and did professional swimming training.”

And now, Qian HongYan has an ambition, which is to compete as a swimmer and become a world champion in the 2012 Paralympics in London. She works very hard to achieve her dream.

Qian HongYan can shut all of our mouth. Look at all the picture of this little one and things that she do, makes me feel ashamed… Look at her…. She’s only 3/4 years old while she lost her legs. Can’t imagine the pain, suffer that she has…. But she still smiles, genuinely. Gosh….. A 4 years old girl can be so positive, cheerful with no complain even she have this bad situation at all! She is truly inspiring.

I am sure Qian HongYan CAN achieves her dreams and life happily.

Thank You Rinpoche for this amazing, inspiring article.

Looking at the photos, we do not see a sad, depressed, poor me face but a smiling, cheery and determined face from such a young girl who only have half a body. Qian Hongyan is an inspiration! How many of us will be able to face this reality of living with half a body? Yet when we are blessed with a perfect body, we do not push ourselves out from out comfort zone and we keep complaining about our lives. Put us to shame, may we be inspired by her determination and push ourselves out from our comfort zone.

What was said about comfort zone is a good checkpoint for me. I guess trying to avoid all hardship and staying in comfort zone, it has caused me to stay in ‘no growth zone’ as well. Trying to minimize the possibilities of encountering adversity, I have been a coward and chose the easier way instead of the harder, but perhaps better way.

There is a Chinese saying, ‘吃得苦中苦,方为人上人’ , loosely translated as “Only if you can stand the hardest hardships can you rise in society”. I never forget this saying but never really applied it. Enduring through a short period of hard times seems like a small price to pay in order to get to where one wants to be- this is part and parcel of many success stories. I reminded myself that is time to change my wrong view about hardship & difficulties – while the hardship itself can be seen as negative, the experiences and skills associated with overcoming them are very positive.

Qian HongYan is inspiring not because of what she doesn’t have, but what she has – despite being a small little girl, her strength is tremendous, to go through suffering daily, enduring it with a bright smile on her face.

Many times we take things for granted, and so we dont cherish things that we already have, we misuse them and work a lot lesser than those who have a lot less than us.

This beautiful girl shows us that many things are possible, if we want it. And we have to want things very hard so that we will work hard for it/them.

The harder we work hard for something the higher chances we have to succeed. Perseverance and believes are the keys.

These unfortunate people, through various misfortunes or Karmic consequences have suffered incredible physical adversities. We salute them for their gusto, ingenuity and general badassness, in overcoming all these terrible adversities. As in the beautiful words of Steve Gutten Berg, they are truly our great heroes and inspiration – “If you are an underdog, mentally disabled, physically disabled, if you dont fit in, if you are not as pretty as others, you still can be a Hero.” Its really a great lesson to be learnt from such power of human spirit as shown by this mightest deformed little girl, Qian Hung Yan!!! My first sight of HongYan breaks my heart. I cannot imagine how much suffring she is going through. But when scrolling down the page, I see a brave girl who has such determination to live a normal life like everyone else, attending class, playing the swing & doing thing all by herself. Her disability has not a moment makes her any different from anyone. But her shear mental strength & determination are what we really have to copy & reflect on. Having such able physical conditions, we should not limit ourselves to what we like to do and avoid what we don’t like. Instead we should be like Hongyan, brave & strong to face the challenges in her life with much joy & cheers. Only then, our mind will be strong & be able to due with all the challenges in life yet to come. Nothing stay the same, everything changes so is our lives.

Amazing determination and the will power of little Qian proves to us that human physic and also the mind is not weak, but is a strong force that can adapt in the most grueling condition, if onlu we allow it and not resist it. Even with just moving around with such condition, she never cry nor complain about her situation , instead she is happy .with what she have, and never in the slightest difficulty she ever cry, but cherish her every moment. Little Qian never sits in her comfort zone and cry, but she move out and live the life just like any other child. She is amazing.

Little QianHongYan is certainly a brave and determined girl. Even though she lost both her legs(something that we all take for granted), she did not allow this disablility to stop her from leading a normal life. All this shows in her cheerful, bright face that is without a tinge of sorrow or bitterness towards the unfortunate event of losing her legs. I learnt so much from this in that I must make full use of whatever ability I have and to stop complaining on small, petty matters. Thank you Rinpoche for this valuable lesson.

Things that all of us take for granted everyday and we are still complaining. We have our health, our body and senses fully intact. Everyday we must remind ourselves of all the people who are suffering out there and their voices not heard. Who would’ve thought to look for these heart breaking stories and contemplate? We choose our comfort zone and try as much not to care so much. Like what Rinpoche said, we should use our body and knowledge to help and benefit others instead of doing what I think I can. What if that 1 day we want to do more but our body breaks down or we die before we could? No more procrastination from now on. I am not going to complain about how I look and what I have. Reading this story of Qian Hongyan is enough for me to appreciate what I have. And that is my choice.

Everything in life is about choices and the best part is you make the decision. In the end if you really look into it, there is nobody to blame but you. This little girl made a decision to continue living and be as “normal” as possible. She chose not to allow her disability to dampen her spirits or limit what she can do. And this is the perfect lesson for all of us to learn.

Below is another inspirational story about a generous old man Bai Fangli.

Here is the question, do u let these story just inspire you or will you do something about it and inspire others.

What Qian HongYan does is really extraordinaire, having lost her legs when she was 3 years old. Yet she has the will to does things without having others to help her much. I don’t think not everyone could emulate what she is does. She is having extensive training for swimming to hope that she can compete in 2012 London Paralympics. Her coach said that she is gifted in swimming, perhaps with an able body could had been a world class swimmer now.

It really touches my heart to see this beautiful girl on a basketball. she is so brave and never give up herself, never find excuses not to do things other normal people can do. We all should not take things for granted, and should walk out from the comfort zone to experience life at different stages. When we are so lucky that we born a healthy person, just think of the many unfortunate people that need our help, no matter big or small.

  126. pastor ngeow on Jun 26, 2012 at 3:40 pm

Ordinary pictures can say a thousand words, but if the pictures depict an extraordinary subject, the power of the human spirit – it can move people. This beautiful girl’s grit and positive attitude is awesome and certainly has power to move many. Even this few pictures here have made me resolve to kick my own comfort zones away for good right here and now. I can imagine her effect on those who actually are close with her or have met her. What is there left to hold us back when we are well endowed to do much more? Let us just do as Rinpoche said. I do now and I leave my results to talk. The end.

Qian Hong Yan has shown us, she’s strong ( mentally & physically ). Qian really inspired me very much. Thank You Rinpoche for sharing this to all of us.

Always remember this from Rinpoche :
Unfortunately if we stay in comfort zones, yes we don’t experience any new difficult situations, but we also don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we cannot benefit others much. If Buddha didn’t want us to overcome comfort zones, there would be no Dharma. The whole point of dharma is to overcome all comfort zones daily, weekly and completely. Never treasure comfort zones as they arise from pure selfish self-deceptive mind.

    Best Regards : Erickksiow

When I look at the photos, I felt very ashamed, because I gave up so easily. I sit in the comfort of air-condition room with coffee and yet I complaint about this and complaint about that. I have not done much and have not had any results. This girl has inspired the world, but what have I done?

And all this is due to my laziness and strong attachment to comfort zone.

It is time for me to reflect and contemplate, and declare to do more. I will step up to do more to serve others. It is action time. Like what is said in the article,

” JUST GET IT DONE. No mistakes, don’t be late, do it well, with a smile and be proud for it when you completed it. The end.”

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing and reminding me the causes of my downfall. Nothing much to say, actions NOW! JUST DO IT and remind myself that , if i choose to be in Dharma, “so call” i wanted to “help” people around me, then no excuses to walk in to comfort zone. I pray always that i able to fulfill my tasks. Thank you my compassionate and wisdom Guru. With Holded Hand -/\-

This is an incredible tale of a girl with indomitable spirit and I am quite amazed at her parent’s ingenuity of using a basketball as a substitute for expensive prosthetic legs. Rinpoche is excellent for these kind of stories/ teachings because it gives us a comparison for the the type of life we enjoy and yet, we take it for granted.

When we have everything, we tend to be spoilt and I do admit that I have a fantastic life and I am pretty much spoilt rotten. Just being in Kechara had been an eye-opener for me as to the limitations I have consciously and subconsciously set upon myself. If it wasn’t for Kechara, I wouldn’t know what it would be like to work round the clock, work in a construction site, wash dishes after a wedding dinner and learn so much Dharma along the way. I really can’t imagine what kind of person I would be if I weren’t in Kechara.

What a brave and courageous little girl ! And totally beautiful at all levels.
Seeing the photos of Qian Hongyan and reading her story makes me realise that all of us are so blessed and yet we do not appreciate what we have and are ungrateful. We do not value and cherish what we already have but still want more, more, more. Not more for others but more for ourselves.
Thank you Rinpoche for the story, photos and teachings.

  132. Kevin Tan on Jun 26, 2012 at 3:22 pm

We ourselves self-limit ourselves with excuses and laziness. We set limits that retard our growth, capability and ability to achieve higher than you could imagine. Why, Buddha did say we all has the nature to go all the way to enlightenment. We all are the cause of our slow process because we refuse change, refuge to move out of our comfort zone.

  133. Alex C.J.Tan on Jun 26, 2012 at 3:10 pm

Qian HongYan disability is not stopping her to live a meaningful life. Although she has all the valid reasons to feel depressed, angry and sorry for herself, she chose to not stay in the past but to move forward positively. As a result of her choice and actions, she inspired many people who read about her story.

Unlike HongYan, we are fortunate to have a whole and healthy body. We must use it productively and push ourselves constantly out of our comfort zones. Just like any habits, we can actually over time develop a brand new habit, that’s a habit of not wanting to stay in comfort zones.

Comfort zones = predictable, dull, no growth, lifeless, boring.

Stepping out of our comfort zones is not difficult once we identify something that we are passionate about….in our case, spreading the Holy Dharma. One can take baby steps or take giant leaps, the choice is yours! But remember time is not on our side.

So, let’s live a full and meaningful life and say Good Bye to our comfort zones.

Rinpoche, thank you for reminding me to use this precious human life and body for greater purpose.

P/s If we ask HongYan, she will probably go for giant leaps!

After reading this, I am ashamed as an adult that whatever I do cannot even be compared to this child. She showed us and inspired everyone of us what truly can a human being be, and what we truly value. Is it laziness we value, or is it perseverance we value. In whatever we do in life it depends on how strong you want to become successful or just being mediocre, even a thief must has perseverance to ‘succeed’.

I have received this in email in 2009 and I have forwarded this to many of my friends in my email list.
Be grateful with what you have and make good use of what you have. There is another thing that we should learn from this girl, she didn’t give up herself by giving excuse of her lost legs.
Look at her eyes and her smile, she is so determined and positive and no sign of self-pity. This is the attitude that is lack in most of us because we are too comfortable with what we have especially in this generation.
Many of us today have no hunger to learning more because we are too busy to indulge in getting more money. shopping, having nice house, having nice car. enjoying nice food, having nice party, having nice systems, playing electronic gadgets, enjoying life, etc. and pay very little attention to and lose touch with our ultimate human needs, i.e. need for spiritual growth.

  139. JP on Jun 26, 2012 at 2:30 pm

The girl is very inspirational. She looks so happy regardless of her lost limbs. I guess the key here is the mind. We cherish what we have and overcome our shortfalls to get what we want. NO point lamenting and staying stagnant with life. It doesn’t bring us any results. Determination and resilience are essential to succeed. These have been the common qualities of highly successful people around the world.

Of course there are times of difficulties, but our goals are more important. Burma’s Aung San Suu Kyi is another great example of overcoming her personal needs for the sake of Burma. Incredible!

Actually all of us have lost something not physically like little Qian Hongyan but definitely we have many afflictions. Because of our deceptive mind which thinks that we are physically complete we are ok and we do things just to make of body feel better for ourselves only.
Whether our bodies are complete or not, it is the mind that is the most important. The self cherishing mind play tricks on us thinking it is ok to just “be ourselves” ie the selfish one. We do things just to be comfortable, make ourselves happy with food, travel, entertainment etc.
Little Qian Hongyan reminds me that ultimately we are the same. What makes us different to others are the results and benefits our actions brings to others and ourselves. It makes me think that perhaps we need to lose part of our body just get rid of our attachment to it.

  144. Girlie Ooi on Jun 26, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Being born with a human body and all our limbs intact, we will never know how it is to be in her place. We look at her and say “Oh, poor thing; she does not have the lower half of her body.” But does she look like someone who has given up hope? She has been rather resourceful, using the basketball to move around. She is such an inspiration.

She is training hard now to compete in the 2012 Paralympics in London. Her coach even said she was a gifted swimmer, perhaps if she still has her legs. She could have be a world class swimmer now.

The little girl Qian HongYan has shown how one can overcome all the great odds and didn’t let her physical handicap stop her from living the life she wanted.

Many would have gave in and lie in bed waiting for others to help and serve them just because they are incapable and handicapped. Let alone complaining incessantly. Not wanting and staying lazy to find ways to overcome the adversities of life irrespective of the limitations.

The girl has shown and inspires in many levels that anyone could actually overcome all these limitations set by our mind. We can even recondition and improvise the way we use to think, have been doing or the way we think is the only way. Why? Plain laziness and not wanting to move out of the limitation zones to do more.

The following are few of the inspirational video links one can see how their physical impairment did not stop them to live the normal life and inspiration source to family and friends.

This is so amazing that even from the photos I can feel the positive energy of her. She seems to be so cheerful with who she is, I don’t see any self-pity kind of emotion from her, just positively living her life as though she is just a normal child. But in fact, she is not normal, she is much stronger than most of us!

  148. Janice on Jun 26, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Challenges to our comfort zones happen daily be it in our work, family or just being served when we buy something. The difference between the achiever and the average is because the achiever challenges his mindset and boundaries and go for it. It is ironical that these words are created by human beings, we use it to label someone else when they dont deliver what we expect but not to ourselves. Excuses for not being an achiever is plenty, becos so and so have this or in this position, therefore he can excel. Taking a small step and recognizing that a small effort is all it takes to increase and reap many fruits, is all it takes. We are fortunate to be practicing Dharma becos with this practice we are already able to understand how our minds work. No aim, no gain. And when we do, it is so much easier for us to put it into practice and go further.

    • Julia Tan on Jul 6, 2012 at 5:41 pm

Jace, I agreed with what you said. It is also made me realized that we are fortunate enough living in a comfortable life with a perfect body yet we sit back and doing nothing about it. More over we have dharma. We are all so spoiled and happily letting everyday wasted just like that. In fact we can think big and see far and do so much more if we start focusing for others.

  149. Joy on Jun 26, 2012 at 12:33 pm

After reading this story of Qian Hong Yan I feel grateful for the what I have in my life and at the same time feel shameful for all those times when I complained, get upset or feel down. It made me realise my problems are so small and nothing compared to Hong Yan.

Hong Yan lost both her legs, for a lot of girls this would be a huge tragedy… but Hong Yan chose a different perspective and her mind remains a happy and peaceful one… a strength is immeasurable. I am sure she does get frustrated at times and am sure she do cry at times, but most importantly I see a girl that never gave up and instead made her days count, her cheerful smile says it all – that is inspiring.

If anyone is to feel sorry or sad about their situation, they should read this story. It is a reminder to count our blessings, to appreciate what we have. And to know that even if you’re going through a difficult time in your life, there is always someone out there experiencing a harder more difficult life.

Whatever challenges that life brings us it is a lesson to find our human spirit and bring out the positive potentials in us… that is why they are called life’s lessons…and sometimes we forget…then a story likes this comes a long to remind us just that. Everyone has that potential, it is whether we want to evoke it or remain in our comfort zones. Hong Yan definitely is showing us that nothing is impossible if you have the right attitude in life…

Thank you for this beautiful post Rinpoche, an apt reminder!

There’s nothing to lose!

  151. Chris Tan on Jun 26, 2012 at 12:29 pm

This little girl Qian Hongyan, has a smile that will melt any heart. It must have been a great ordeal to have lost both her legs and coming to terms with it. Her determination is admiring, going through her everyday life in a basketball and two stilt props.
I feel very sad to see the condition of Qian Hongyan. An innocent young girl, dealt with such terrible fate. Learning to walk again, is a challenge for her.

It makes me think, how fortunate are we. But do we appreciate what we have and in our blessed conditions push to make ourselves better? Many, including myself complain at the slightest discomfort and will use all sorts of way to avoid doing things that we don’t like. But I realize, very often, it is by doing things that we don’t like, we get to learn new things. Our false sense of security so automatically kicks in and prompt us to avoid doing things we are not familiar with because of the fear of failing, hence we choose to stay comfortable by doing what we know and achieve the same expected result each time. How funny….

Learning to walk all over again will cause Qian Hongyan much discomfort and fear because she may be so used to the stilt props and basketball. But she pushed herself to learn and practice to be able to walk again, one step at a time. I realize, if we push and stretch ourselves by doing more than we can. We actually become better and a little stronger each time.

May Qian Hongyan live a happy and wonderful life and her story inspires many others. __/\__

Dharma is doing things we don’t like, Until we like doing it.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

    Dear Rinpoche,

The story of the resilience of this little girl to continue living even when she lost her legs is very inspiring on so many levels. It makes me rethink every time i want to complain or give up on something whenever things get too difficult. She did not give up her life or just lie in bed doing nothing, she continued her life as per normal and tried to live life as ordinary as possible. she did not demand a wheelchair or give up or complain despite her condition. She could not afford prosthetic legs but she did not make a big deal out of it and just lie in bed at home and expect her parents to feed her just because she did not have legs…she actually found a way to still move around despite the lack of legs and improvised.

It really made me rethink and reevaluate myself on how many times i gave up on something in life because it got too hard or got too difficult and then let it slip by my fingers.

How many great friends I have lost because i refuse to put up with them anymore and they eventually become better people…friends that are worth it and that could have been very close to me and back me up whenever i need someone.

How many opportunities that I have lost just because I gave in to difficulties and decided not to go through with them because its too hard

How many personal dreams that I have crushed personally because i find it too difficult to pursue and if i had pursue them, i could have been a happier and more successful person

And the list just goes on.

But unlike me, the girl did not give up even if she lost her legs. If i was in her shoes, i would probably just lie in bed, waiting for my day to die. But she persisted.

therefore, i must persist in everything else because if she can do it, so can I. I do not want to lose anything else due to my fear in bearing through the difficulties and uncertainties anymore.

Thank you Rinpoche for such a thought provoking story.

  156. MayOng on Jun 26, 2012 at 10:05 am

We are selective in what we like or can do but Qian HongYan did not have that choice. She live her life with a smile just like anyone else would normally despite her loss of her lower body.

Who are we to complain about small minor things but we give up and stay in our comfort zone for that fell of protection. Yes, Rinpoche, we can do more if we decide to put our minds into it. We need to stop making excuses for ourselves. Thank you.

This little is truly an inspirational example to all of us. We complain when we have a flu, headache or even not enough sleep !

Looking at her happy, cheery face and bouncing away on the football put me to shame. There is nothing in whatever I done can be compared to the obstacle she has overcome.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this uplifting post.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing Qian’s story with us. She’s amazing. If she didn’t touch my heart, who else will? My heart broke when I saw her pictures. I will print out her pictures and put in a nice frame and put it in front of my desk to remind myself that’s a lot more I can do.

Little Qian has no legs. She is using the basketball and her two little strong hands to move around. She never complain but smile and cheerful always. Little Qian proved to everyone that she could make it no matter what. She indure and overcome all the difficulties which pour on her over night. She’s small but extremly strong. Because she knew no one can help but herself. Where by people like us always not working hard for what we want! We have all the conditions that little Qian doesn’t. life has been good and merry hence we don’t have to push ourselves anymore. We started to degenerate and assume everything will be just fine. So much wasted doing nothing but thinking that everything will be ok. May be yes may be not.

I am very happy for little Qian that she finally received her prosthetic legs. Now she can move faster and I believe little Qian has many big dreams to chase and her achievements to be accomplished. May my prayers always goes to her.

  159. Wei Theng on Jun 26, 2012 at 4:24 am

What more can i complain when I see this little girl? Despite the lost of her legs and have to use a basket ball to move about, Hong Yan still does not complain or give any excuses, she just faces it and lives her life with a smile and full colour!
“The purpose of the body is to be beneficial to others. To maintain our bodies is to keep it healthy for others… to serve others.” Now, our body is not ours, it belongs to others, it is a tool for us to serve others and not for us to use as an excuse for not doing things!
I will always put this in my mind – “JUST GET IT DONE. No mistakes, don’t be late, do it well, with a smile and be proud for it when you completed it.”

  160. Jeffrey Yee on Jun 26, 2012 at 4:16 am

I cannot imagine things to go any worse for little Qian Hongyan. Even at her present condition she has the courage and hope to push further in life without crying nor complaining. I am very touched by her determination.

I feel shame for having to complain about pushing myself out of my comfort zone when other unfortunate ones such as Hongyan is living cheerfully in such a sad state. There is a need for me to contemplate on this case to realize and fix this ungrateful and self-cherishing mind.

    Thank you for posting Rinpoche.

Qian HongYan is truly inspiring. With a perfect body and conditions I do not see why we should remain in comfort zone but to strive to make our dreams a reality and make our perfect body and conditions beneficial to ourself and others rather than rotting away and achieving little or no purpose and meaning in life.

At first glance, to be completely honest, I caught myself saying “big deal! Yet another poor child who lost limbs and learns to live with her incapacitated manner”

As soon as I said that, it dawned upon me… What an insensitive and selfish a thought. Complete disregard for a person’s drive and tenacity in the most harrowing situations. Yes, it is all sinking in now as I dwell on how desensitized we all are to a certain extent.

It is scary to think this way even for a split second. What is more, it is the very foundation for us to “look the other way” in times of adversity. And we wonder why no one helps us when we are down? Karma coming full circle…

Having shared the above, I know I am not an evil person but the very fact that I actually thought those thoughts and I am not so called evil is even worse because, imagine if there was intent behind the thought. How much worse it could be… perhaps the mind of a serial killer comes to mind? And all that from a mere thought! Hence we need to be mindful of our thoughts which in turn control our actions and our speech.

The post on this incredible little child who at her age should have the freedom to be able to run around and play like other children do and enjoy the same carefree life every child should be privileged to experience but she does not… not in the conventional way that is.

But look at the pictures above. Pictures do not lie… she is genuinely smiling in each and every picture (apart from the ones where she is trying to walk with her new prosthetic legs). She exudes a total acceptance of the situation she is in and is making the best out of it. It really hits home because, I reflect on the times where I have made excuses for not doing mundane things in my life which could have been done easily in retrospect but was not done because it did not suit me at the time or I was just too tired (always a good one… NOT!).

I look further into my past and the more I look, the more the little girl’s smile haunts me… my life of selfishness and arrogance in the most subtle ways. Incredible how I have deluded myself for so long. And all it takes is a smile from a beautiful girl to remind me of how lucky… how truly lucky I am to have my sufferings and to be able to do something about it!

  165. Sean Pang on Jun 26, 2012 at 3:53 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

many thanks for sharing the story of Qian Hongyan. Life can be cruel for taking away the legs of someone so young and yet, this brave little girl is using her sad story to teach us all a valuable lesson.

When we are healthy, when things are going our way, when our lives seem to be perfectly in order, we tend to think that nothing will ever change. This delusion – our comfort zone – is nothing more than a trap that WE create for ourselves. How many of us are able to pick ourselves up and use a basketball as legs, if we ever have the misfortune of losing them? If we are so attached to what makes us comfortable every day, we will never be able to do what Hongyan did.

At the end of the day, it’s about choice. Do we choose to cocoon inside our comfort zones and wait for failure – for one day something will come and rock the boat – or do we step outside of our comfort zones now to confront the unknown, prepared for the worst but giving our best?

Easier said than done but it’s worth a try, everyday.

    Sean

Dorje Shugden controversy began when the Dalai Lama made successive attempts to wrongly assert the nature of the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden to be a harmful spirit. The great lineage masters such as Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche’s teachings are amongst the greatest dharma that forms the foundation of Gelugpa education. As confirmed that Dorje Shugden is an emanation of Manjushri. Dorje Shugden is an enlightened Dharma Protector who manifested about 400 years ago from a lineage of erudite masters. They cant be wrong . Dorje Shugden via the Panglung oracle had helped the Dalai Lama in his great escape out of Tibet. There are so many highly attained lamas who practices Dorje Shugden and their reincarnations have been coming back again and again. Even 5th Dalai Lama composed a prayer to Dorje Shugden and built a Protector chapel dedicated to Dorje Shugden as well. That’s Trode Khangsar in Central Lhasa which is still there. The ban of Dorje Shugden is unnecessary and illogical as the bigger purpose of Dorje Shugden,is the preservation of the Dharma. The Tibetan Leadership (CTA) has instituted this ban against Dorje Shugden for many years and its time to lift the ban. May more people read and understand the ban and the real reason behind this controversy.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for sharing this post.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa a scholar ,great master, writer, abbot of all monastic universities. Well known for writing 11 definitive volumes of philosophical teachings. He was the unmistaken incarnation of the pure monk Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen who was a direct disciple of Je Tsongkhapa.Panchen Sonam Dragpa was unique in having served as abbot of the three main Gelug monasteries that is Ganden, Sera and Drepung. The only person ever to have received this honour. Panchen Sonam Dragpa’s collected works spans volumes, constituting the main textbooks which is still used today.

Troll is a being in Nordic folklore, described as trolls dwell in isolated areas of rocks, mountains, or caves, live together in small family units, and are rarely helpful to human beings. Trolling behaviors involve tactical aggression to incite emotional responses, which can adversely affect the target’s well-being. Troll represented aspects of life and nature that were beyond human control or understanding. They can be found all over Norway with mysterious rock formations and mountains with troll-like-shapes , sometimes possessing magic powers too. Reading this post had me get to know there’s other forest creatures that existed long ago. An eye opener reading it .
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Dice divination, a fascinating and ancient method of fortune-telling, has been used by various cultures throughout history. Dice hold different meanings and symbolism in various religious traditions, representing chance, fate, and the connection between humans and the divine. Dice are commonly used as divination tools in modern witchcraft and are interpreted to seek insight and guidance from higher powers. Despite all the different rules and approaches, all forms of dice divination are basically the more same.
In Tibetan Buddhism there are a number of divination methods. Even within dice divination there are many forms, and these are associated with many different deities such as Manjushri, Palden Lhamo and Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden divination method is well known to be extremely accurate , very beneficial and effective.
Our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche had received the entire transmission and commentary of the Dorje Shugden divination lineage from Dorje Shugden himself. One should maintain very good guru devotion and have clean samaya with our guru with ,have respect for the Dharma and have the deepest faith in the great and powerful enlightened protector Dorje Shugden to do the divination.Tsem Rinpoche has helped thousands of people through his divination methods in Malaysia. Interesting read , more to understand about it.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing with us .

Visualizing deities while meditating or when we are performing a puja is one of the principal methods used in the Tibetan tradition. Deities are highly symbolic representations of awakened minds that have appeared to past masters in visions. Deities are represented in thangkas and paintings. As more and more people embrace the Tibetan Buddhist path with sincerity and dedication, they understand better and could visualize through the practice. It is not about appeasing a deity, but engaging in formal meditational practices to transform ourselves. The actual practice in Buddhism is to purify karma, accumulate merits by way of Buddha-deity practice, and to create the causes and conditions for spiritual realisations.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for these great teachings.

Centuries after Buddhism originated in India, the Mahayana Buddhism arrived in China through the Silk Route. The worship of Buddha Amitabha arose from a school of Buddhism. The Origins of Pure Land Buddhism began in India around the 2nd century BCE. It spread to China and then spread to Japan around the 6th century. Buddhism in China was undoubtedly quite different from Buddhism which was originally practiced in India. In China the beginnings of the Pure Land Buddhism are traced back as far as the 4th century, practitioners meditated on the name of Amitabha. The Buddhists believe that this deity helps in regeneration and improvement and has became icons used all over China. In China, the Pure Land sutras and teachings are based on Amitabha Buddha. It then spread and became dominant in other Asian countries as well.

Niguma is considered one of the most important and influential yoginis and Vajrayana teachers of the 10th or 11th century in India. Niguma was a dakini, and one of the two female founders of the Shangpa Kagyu school of Vajrayana Buddhism. She has created. a system of yoga predominantly for women. Historically, it is the only yoga series designed by a woman. Niguma’s life, her teachings had a significant impact on Buddhism. According to scholars, Niguma had high-level realization, attained rainbow body, and even received teachings directly from Vajradhara. It is said that Niguma cultivated the Buddhist path in previous lives, so that in her lifetime she directly saw the truth of the nature of phenomena just by hearing basic phenomena from a few adept masters. Interesting life story of a great Dakini .

Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo is a bhikṣuṇī in the Drukpa lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. She is an author, teacher and founder of the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in Himachal Pradesh, India. Reading this interesting post with the thought of our daily life, how laziness will bring us downhill. It is possible to overcome laziness by setting achievable goals and developing a strong work ethic. Lazy ambition is not an uncommon occurrence . Through not been lazy, it takes sweat, determination and hard work one can be successful. Laziness may reflect a lack of self-esteem, by taking the initiative doing things that matters in life such as learning dharma and practicing dharma is the best option. Letting go all unnecessary secular activities and do more to benefit others will be a better choice. Do what we can, with what we have, where we are and not excuses not to do. Accept whatever comes along, accept reality instead running away from it been lazy.
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound teachings of Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo.

A mantra is a sacred utterance, a numinous sound, a syllable, word believed by practitioners to have religious, magical or spiritual powers. They are refer as sacred words of power. Mantras are used in many spiritual traditions, they originated in the ancient scriptures. They are used up to this day in India. Anyone who recites those holy words can tap into their source and connect with sacred energy that helps to transform our minds. A tremendous blessing power that exist in all religions . Any pictures of Chenrezig will always caught my eyes on it since young. Looking at those pictures and watching the videos , had me think of how tedious training those dancers had gone through against the odds. A salute to them even though they are deaf-blind-and-mute they danced gracefully transforms into 1000 arm-chenrezig. They are a professional dancer from the China Disabled People’s Performing Arts Troupe. They learned the art of dancing through sign language with other trainers at a very young age. Determination says all.

Reading again the stories of Gaden Jangtse’s Jolenpa Gen Nyima, by Kyabje Tsem Tulku Rinpoche truly inspiring indeed. An extremely humble monk was not interested in titles, recognition or degrees yet highly attained Yamantaka yogi with his meditation practice .One could transform into an exalted being if we sincerely and having engage in the meditations and practices. Gen Nyima’s example shows and inspired many that humility is the basis of all attainments. Live a simple life , donated mostly all to monastery and kept little for himself. Having saved many people performing miraculous healings and giving extremely accurate divinations. Interesting reading of his miraculous healing. Wow interesting stories about Gen Nyima demonstrating his attainments to spread the Dharma and had inspired others through his Dharma teachings. Gen Nyima had spent 15 years in a Yamantaka retreat in Bhutan before returning to Gaden Jangtse Monastery.
Rejoiced to Irene Lim and few of Tsem Rinpoche ‘s students having met Gen Nyima at Gaden Monastery back in 1993.

Thank you Rinpoche and Beatrice Ooi for this sharing and explaining the details of incense. Within Tibetan Buddhism, incense has traditionally been used as an offering to the Three Jewels for centuries, so as in other Buddhist traditions. Within ritual, incense is also used to purify offering substances such as water, food and light. We offer incense as an expression of our gratitude and reverence for the Buddha’s great compassion. The practice of burning incense sticks has a dual purpose, purifying and cleansing the energy of a space. It is said that the fragrant eliminating negative impurities and creating a positive environment. In many religious practices, burning incense is believed to deepen our attention and empower our spiritual focus. The aroma of incense can help us to tap in our spiritual connections. It calms the environment and our mind, cleansing the space for inner and outer journeys. Great article.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
