BBC: The Lost World Of Tibet
Dear friends,
You have to watch this very interesting and extremely rare footage of a past time in Tibet. I was mesmerized and watched a few times. I love the part where they show His Holiness Dalai Lama going to Gaden. Also for debates examinations where you can see Trijang Rinpoche/Ling Rinpoche sitting by his right and left sides listening intently. Enjoy this rare video and be blessed.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this amazing documentary of Tibet with its rich traditions steep in Buddhist culture and its practices. I enjoyed watching the whole video. It is very interesting and educational.
A rare and amazing documentary of Tibet…… a documentary revealing the story of the Dalai Lama, his secret Himalayan kingdom and the story of his exile. Feeling so fortunate and blessed been able to watch the whole documentary. The Lost World Of Tibet is an amazing documentary made by BBC, reveals the story of the Dalai Lama. Using eyewitness accounts from Tibetans including the Dalai Lama himself ,Phuntsog Tsering , Shewo Lobsang Dargye , Usur Nawang Tashi and few others to make this documentary successful. So as all of us given a chance to watch these rare archive footage of Tibet. I do enjoyed watching and able to watch the 1,300-year-old mystical cham dances and Potala Palace in Lhasa,at that time.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing these rare and amazing documentary.
Wow, I didn’t know this video was here, it IS AMAZING! It is one of my, if not the mos, favorite documentary on Tibet. The footage is absolutely stunning. The first time I watched it, I immediately wished I had a time machine!
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this amazing documentary of Tibet with its rich traditions steep in Buddhist culture and its practices. It was very fortunate that films were available then to capture the scenes of Tibetans in their festivities. The people’s lives were so intersperse with the monastic’s that all celebration were of religious nature. It showed the very rare footage of H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama when he was just recognised with his family and later when he took his exams in debate form. And the appearance of H.H. Kyabje Ling Rinpoche and H.H. Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the Dalai Lama’s senior and junior Tutors. There was a light moment when the Dalai Lama shared that during his exam debate in Gaden, he was threw off guard and didn’t quite know how to continue when a monk of lesser learning gave an unexpected answer. His Tutors saw his uncertainty and ended the debate.
It was good that this documentary had included His Holiness, his brother, his sister-in-law and a few others to share their real experiences. It evokes such a feeling of loss for the strong spiritual togetherness and strength. May the Protector Dorje Shugden practice be swiftly accepted so that Tibetan Buddhist practitioners of Gelug can reunite to be one again.
What incredible footage. A time long gone but a world that still exist on the roof of the world.
It makes me feel like I am transported back in time while viewing the video. I really enjoyed the ‘jovial’ interview with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his vivid account of his past in Tibet!!! HHDL does have such a contagious laughter…
Thank you Rinpoche for always sharing with us such informative and wonderful postings that increase our knowledge and understanding of issues outside our tiny realm of perception!
Wow! I love this video very much. There’s just so much to watch and unfortunately, I don’t have the time to watch the entire movie right now but I will definitely come back to it. However, I have fast-forewarded to different sections of the whole documentary. They are incredibly amazing because they are like a little window to the lost world of Tibet before the Chinese occupation. Its amazing because they show a lot of detail of not just the Dalai Lama but also of the leisure activities of the aristocrats in Lhasa.
However, my favourite sequence is really the Geshe exams of the Dalai Lama. The simple grandeur of the Dalai Lama with his maroon robes and golden pandit’s hat. It is incredible to see all the monks huddle together to witness this historical moment. It’s just amazing to glimpse a whole society that is geared towards the preservation and propagation of the Buddhadharma. We are indeed fortunate that TIbet existed to preserve the true essence of Buddha’s teachings. In fact, many of the ancient Buddhist texts are extant today because of the kindness of the Tibetan monasteries that have kept copies in Sanskrit or translated into Tibetan.
Wow this video sort of takes you back in time, where the mystical land of snows were just merely a tale. Seeing this footage, we can see the grandeur of things surrounding His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche and His Holiness Ling RInpoche. It looks so sureal. It’s also apparent that the Gelugpa schools we very prominent during that time and Tibet was a haven of spirituality.
I cannot help but think that if China had never invaded, we would probably never know or hear much about this “Enlightened” beings. And the Dalai Lama would not be as huge as He is now and the Vajrayana Dharma would never had spread this far… we may not have met Rinpoche even. It is in a way amazing how the causes and conditions came about where by something negative became something so much more positive.
I mean because of His Holiness, this one amazing being, Vajrayana Buddhism has spread across the globe. In fact whenever I say Tibetan Buddhism to my friends, they would say you mean the Dalai Lama… In a dunny way, His Holiness’s name is more popular then Tibetan Buddhism!
We are in a way blessed by this great fortune to cross bath with Rinpoche here in Malaysia… who would ever thought we’d meet a Highly attained “Tibetan” Lama right here in Malaysia? I’ve never even heard of Tibetan Buddhism until I met Rinpoche. We Kecharians, must have some kind of affinity towards Rinpoche and the Dharma. We mustn’t lose this treasure.
Dear Rinpoche, thank you for posting this. I love the video as it brings to mind the details and descriptions in H.H.Dalai Lama’s biography. Watching the Oracle trance brings to mind what was written in the book too. A gem of information and visuals for everyone to learn from. We are also blessed to see Trijang Rinpoche and Ling Rinpoche in the video. _/I\_
The richness of the Tibetan culture filled with traditions is truly admirable!Though the 20th Century, the Tibetans lived a 16th Century lifestyle.Originally nomadic, the Tibetan society became feudal and deeply religious.Buddhism had a profound effect on Tibetans.
A brilliant and well presented documentary.May the Tibetans regain their beautiful country and the Tibetan culture flourish.
Thank you for sharing this incredible rare video with us and your blessings.
Thanks Rinpoche for showing us this rare video, although we yet to have enough merits to Tibet but after watch this video it make me know more about Tibet.
May all Lama, Rinpoche and monks long life and continue to turn the Dharma wheel. And may Tibetan Buddhism flourish widely to benefit more sentient beings…
Wow, as a Chinese, this is the very first time for me to see the Tibet history from the other side of the view. We were not taught this way when we learnt the history of Tibet…That was not how we saw Tibet in movies…It was amazing how beautiful and elegant the ladies are and how people dress and behave. It was impressive to see how people pay respect to His Holiness along the road.
Real religion is never poison but medicine to help people from suffering and make the society more peaceful. It teaches us karma and it tells us not to harm others. Without religion, people cross their moral line easily and they can do anything they want without principle. That is ignorant and really scary. And that’s why we need to spread Dharma to others.
When His Holiness spoke about the old days about his parents, his examination… His Holiness is so real. I can only fold my hands and bow. A wonderful video that everyone should watch!
This blog is precious!!!
it is an insightful look in Tibet of the old, unfortunately it is the karma of the Tibetan to lose control over their country. Perhaps Tibet served it purpose for the past 1000 years which it housed the teachings of the Buddha that came to India via the Indian Pandits, Mahasiddhas and scholars, through the many translators who braved the dangers of travel. The Dharma Protectors did do their job and that they protector the Dharma to spread outside of Tibet in many parts of the world outside of Tibet. I do hope that China being one of the dominant superpowers of the world can perhaps under new leadership find a way through and willing to give autonomy for the Tibetan region.
As from records, Tibetan history is particularly based on the history of Buddhism in Tibet, which is also a pivotal role this religion is said to have played in the developement of Tibetan, Mongolian and Manchurian cultures, because almost all native historians of the country were Buddhist monks. Keydates in Tibetan history dated as far back as the 7th century to what it is today under the Chinese rule, following the Lhasa uprising and the Dalai Lama’s flight from Tibet in 1959 to Dharamsala, India, where the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Government-in-Exile are now based. The Tibetan/China issue is said to be not only really a very, very complicated issue but a frustrated one too, for the suffering tibetans, which many seem to agree. May the recent change of the new Chinese collective Leadership eventually lead to a more stable and hopeful settlement for securing back the Lost World of Tibet.
If you believe in BBC’s viewpoint in advance, then you believe even the lies from BBC, which can’t be proved by facts.
The Tibetan culture and the preservation of Buddhism within Tibet in the ancient times is incredible. Tibetan culture incorporated Buddhism into their history, the culture and the minds of the Tibetan people. In ancient times, it was hard to gain access to Buddhism knowledge from Tibet.
Since HH the Dalai Lama’s exile, Tibetan Buddhism and knowledge had been brought out of Tibet by highly attained masters who eventually shared it with the world today. Due to this, we are able to practise Tibetan Buddhism, understand Tibetan culture and is people.
Thank you for this video and will share it with others.
Dear Rinpoche,
thk you for posting this video. I love the video very much, i love tibetan culturals, we can see the tibetan people living in the old tibetan cultures. I think now is very hard to see the real tibetan cultural in tibet now, although i never go to tibet before. From the news, we know that tibet is much more moden now( in term of materials and education).
Thank you Rinpoche for recommending this rare video. From our recommendation, I am confident the information presented can be trusted.
Though I have “followed” Tsem Rinpoche for more than a year, I seldom watch videos of Tibet. Watching this video make me feel like I’m part of the Tibet history, because that is where my Guru comes from.
I like the video because they mix the old footage and kind of “compare” it with the current time. It seems like there is no much changes from the old time and now, except the roads are much well built now 🙂
It is such a shame that Lhasa was invaded, but on the other hand, if not because of this, His Holiness Dalai Lama will probably will still living in Lhasa and Buddhism will not have gone so far and so wide..
