“I went back to the hospital for follow-up check-up, and the oncologist told me that I have no cancer now, and for my case it is very rare for the cancer to disappear completely, THE CHANCE IS ONE IN A THOUSAND CASES, the doctors even said they wanted to put my case on the medical journal.”

(Prepared by Pastor Seng Piow and Pastor Yek Yee)

I’m Adeline Tan, a long time student of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche. I met Rinpoche in 1992 on his first visit to Malaysia, then Rinpoche invited me to his monastery the following year and I stayed in his Tsem Ladrang in Gaden Monastery for 2 weeks.

2 years later, I joined Rinpoche and his beloved late Guru His Eminence Kensur Jampa Yeshe Rinpoche for a pilgrimage tour to Bodhgaya, Vulture’s Peak, Varanasi, Dharamsala and many other holy places in India. While we were in Bodhgaya, I saw many sangha members, lay people and visitors doing full body prostration in the compound of the Mahabodhi Stupa and I asked Rinpoche why were they doing that, Rinpoche replied that it is to purify our negative karma, especially body karma.

A few of us were very fortunate that day. We managed to take our refuge vows with the two highly attained lamas inside the stupa in front of Lord Buddha Shakyamuni’s statue just before the closing time of the stupa, no other visitors, just the few of us.

Upon returning home from the 1-month pilgrimage tour all over India, I started doing full prostration in my house (at that time, Kechara House has not established yet). When Rinpoche came to know that I was doing full prostration when he revisited Malaysia a year later, he was very pleased and one day Rinpoche and a few of his assistants helped me to set up a beautiful altar in my room and told me to finish the 100,000 prostrations plus the daily sadhana (to recite Migtsema prayer and the protector mantra) without breaking the continuum. It took me 8 years to complete 100,000 full prostration, 1 million Migtsema prayer and 3 million protector mantra. In the same year, Kechara House was established. Rinpoche then asked me to sponsor the Buddha statues at Kechara House, the bigger the better, for the main prayer hall, and also to invite small statues for my altar in my house. I have 3 altars in my house now. I followed what Rinpoche asked me to do. The reason I mentioned all these is because these have helped me to overcome a lot of my obstacles and purified my negative karma in the later part of my life.

5 year ago (2009), one day after praying and cleaning my beloved late parents’ and grandmother’s grave during Qing Ming (Tomb-sweeping Day), I developed a sore throat and fever the next day, my voice became hoarse, so I went to see the family physician and after taking the antibiotic, my fever subsided, but my voice remained hoarse and sometimes there was no voice at all. I also noticed that when I drank water, I would easily get choked; when I ate, the food would get stuck in my chest, worse than the feeling of heartburn. This condition persisted for more than a month. Finally I went to see a specialist in the private hospital at the advice of my boss. They did MRI and endoscopy scan on me. It was through the endoscope that one large malignant growth was found in my lower oesophagus, and it was bleeding inside that caused me to become anaemic.
I went to see a surgeon too, but he told me the growth was not operable, so the only thing the doctor could do was to shrink the growth. The oncologist told me it was a cancer of 3rd stage and above, and needed 6 cycles of chemotherapy. Just a few days before Wesak day in 2009, I started my first chemo.

At the same time Tsem Rinpoche did divination for me, his divination said it would be very difficult, unless I followed his instruction 100% and all the way. Rinpoche gave me a hug and asked me if I would follow his advice, I said yes. Then Rinpoche kindly advised me on what pujas I had to do in Gaden Monastery (at that time there was no Kechara Puja House yet), and Rinpoche also lit a lot of candles and prayed for me in his Ladrang. Besides, animal liberation was also done for me.

Due to the seriousness of my illness, the doctor had to give me very strong chemotherapy treatment. I wanted to stop the treatment as I could not stand the gruelling treatment of chemotherapy after the 3rd cycle, but through Rinpoche’s kindness, blessing, very strong prayers for me, as well as my sister’s great care and the encouragement from my family members, I continued the treatment for 9 months. One year after the completion of the chemo, my health condition started to improve and I gained back some strength. During the chemotherapy, sometimes I didn’t even have the energy and strength to do my daily sadhana, that was how weak I was.

Through the power of the pujas done in Gaden Monastery monthly for 9 months, and Rinpoche’s care and blessing, I managed to pull through those difficult times. Rinpoche also told me that what I had done years ago – the millions of mantra recitations, sponsoring big Buddha statues and doing 100,000 full prostration, had helped me through my illness by purifying my karma tremendously.

2 months ago, I went back to the hospital for follow-up check-up, and the oncologist told me that I have no cancer now, and for my case it is very rare for the cancer to disappear completely, THE CHANCE IS ONE IN A THOUSAND CASES, the doctors even said they wanted to put my case in the medical journal.

Now, I am volunteering full-time in Kechara Puja House from Monday to Satuday, and I attend Dharma class on Sunday. I now truly believe the power of mantras and the pujas, as well as the powerful effect of full prostration in front of holy enlightened beings and also sponsoring Buddha statues. By doing so we can really purify our severe negative karma.

I sincerely thank Rinpoche from the depths of my heart for giving me a new lease of life. Kechara is my spiritual home now, thank you once again.

Adeline Tan

Adeline Tan 陈桂霞

    Dear Adeline,

I’ve met you few times and and I think you are a person who will do more quietly without the need of acknowledgement from others. After all, Dharma is about us transforming internally although outwardly we can remain as the same person as we were. You are indeed so lucky to be near Dharma and of course, the most important thing is becoming Rinpoche’s student. May you have long life and great health for years to come.

  2. sandra on Mar 26, 2015 at 8:15 pm

Nice lady. The only thing that matters are the six paramitas. And Tsem Rinpoche is well versed in them, well practised in them. So may we all be like him too.

I rejoice for Adeline because life is precious and suffering cancer can be one of the most traumatic experience one has to go through. It is wonderful that Adeline used her miraculous recovery from cancer as proof of the power of having faith in the Guru and following the Guru’s kind and wise guidance.

I am always grateful to Tsem Rinpoche because it is through Rinpoche’s kindness that I have witnesses people heal and recover physically, emotionally, financially and socially (in the form of building better relationships). It is also through the wisdom and compassion of Rinpoche that we have team of pastors who are also turning the wheel of dharma and extending support and help to others.

Once again, we see the greatness of the Dharma in tangible form.

  5. Uncle Eddie on Nov 18, 2014 at 12:40 pm

As said, the truth of the path to the cessation of suffering has its very root, i.e compassion. This involves developing a mind of kindness and kindheartedness – that is to say, developing a motivation towards the service and benefit of others always. In this respect,it is of a very good Karmic opportunity for our sister Adeline Tan to have met our compassionate Guru, Rinpoche, as a result of which, she is today confirmed to have been miraculously cured of her cancerous sickness! We thank Rinpoche from the bottom of our hearts for precipitating a successful cure for her very serious illness. May all holy teachers have long lives to remain in this Universe to bring the brightness of the teachings of Lord Tsongkhapa to continously dissipate the veil of darkness and sufferings of the three realms. Please grant us blessings that all outer and inner hindrances of all sentient beings be fully pacified. Om mani padme hung.

The Guru is extremely kind and compassionate. He will not abandon us even though we and cling to habitual thoughts and actions. Thank you Adeline for this heartfelt sharing. May you continue to have good health and benefit others with Dharma work.

  11. Pastor Han Nee on Nov 12, 2014 at 5:16 pm

Adeline Tan’s story is truly heartwarming. Her miraculous recovery owes itself to our Guru , Tsem Rinpoche’s compassion and to Adeline’s own resolute faith and Guru Devotion. It was most fortunate that she had met Rinpoche at the time when her karma ripened to manifest as her cancer, which was in its third stage already.

She persistently followed her Guru’s instructions, no matter what. In that way, she purified her negative karma and accumulated great merits, which translated into her miraculous cure.

Thank you , Adeline, for sharing the story, and P Seng Piow and P Yek Yee for helping her to get her wonderful story told.

  12. Ash Ng on Nov 12, 2014 at 4:38 pm

It’s heartwarming to hear that you, Adeline Tan has successfully conquer such a difficult situation in your life. Not only did you get back your health but you also have forged stronger bond with your guru. My mother who has suffered from colon cancer previously also through rinpoche’s instructions and blessings successfully won over her deadly disease. And she has fully recovered now.

I’m happy for you and rejoice for your unshakable guru devotion and achievement 😀

  13. Pastor Gim Lee on Nov 12, 2014 at 3:37 pm

Adeline Tan is very lucky to have met her Guru H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche to teach her the methods of countering the ripening of her karma.

The miracle happened because she followed her Guru’s instructions thus collected enough merits to save her life. And due to the blessings of her Guru who carries the blessings of all the Buddhas from the unbroken lineage since Buddha Shakyamuni.

How compassionate is the Guru! We will not be able to repay all our Guru’s kindness but we must attempt to do so by engaging in Dharma activities sincerely to benefit others and most importantly to transform our mind to be less self-cherishing.

  14. Joy on Nov 12, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Thank you Adeline for sharing your inspiring story. It truly is a miracle, and yes we are indeed very fortunate to have met Rinpoche who truly is here to benefit us. How lucky you were able to travel with 2 living Buddhas , Tsem Rinpoche and His Guru Kensur Jampa Yeshe all over India and receiving all the blessings! I admire your faith and devotion in applying the teachings and listening to Guru’s advice and hence you are now a living walking talking testament to many, that following Guru’s instructions is crucial.

Yes many times we may not quite understand why Rinpoche makes us do certain things and sometimes it may seem weird even, but truth is there is definitely good reasons behind it. Nothing the Guru does is ever random or to hurt anyone, it is all part of the purification process or training and we just need to trust so that we can overcome our obstacles. I for one have many of such experience too. So Thank you again for your honest story and great reminder to all students on the importance of following the Guru advice!

Thank you Adeline Tan, Pastor Seng Piow, Pastor Yek Yee for sharing this miracle story with all of us.

Thank you Adeline Tan for sharing with us your true story and important of Guru devotion. Wish you healthy and continue to do more dharma work to benefit others.

  16. Edwin Tan on Nov 12, 2014 at 1:47 am

Congrats to Adeline Tan! I am glad this medical miracle happened!

When we trust our Guru fully and devote ourselves to following our Guru’s advice, miracles do happen.

When we are told to do something NOW… we may not understand… but later part of our lives… we will know the significance of following through what our Guru told us.

Adeline followed strictly what Rinpoche told her and her karma was purified…without Rinpoche’s advice and protection, I cannot imagine what will happen.

    Thank you Rinpoche.

Manjushri is one of the most important figures in Mahayana Buddhism, and is considered a patron deity of wisdom and learning. By practicing Manjushri our wisdom can enhance and improve significantly. Helps help us with our memory.
Through Rinpoche’s sponsorship at Gaden Sharte Monastery many monks had benefited. Rejoice to them receiving the initiation .Sponsoring the Dharma, which refers to supporting the teachings and practices of Buddhism, is considered a meritorious act in Buddhism. Acts of generosity and support for the Dharma are believed to generate positive karma, leading to positive consequences in this life and future lives.

David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter and actor and was once a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner. Regarded as among the most influential musicians of the 20th century . The English singer, songwriter and actor David Bowie died at his Lafayette Street home in New York City but in his will he requested his ashes to be spread according to the Buddhist rituals of Bali, Indonesia. He must been to Bali and fall for the beauty of Buddhism and culture of Bali to choose BUDDHIST ritual upon his death. David Bowie made a conscious choice that made perfect sense, not allowing fans and media to focus on his body and his death.

HORRIFYING, feeling sad after watching the video. The way or rather methods of slaughtering of pigs at slaughter house is indeed cruel. Just like human beings, they do feel pain and fear to be slaughter. No living beings would choose to die in pain or a painful death. Hopefully those methods have since been changed to minimize animal suffering. Stop consuming meat and choosing to go meatless or on vegetarian is the best choice.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this to bring awareness of how those poor pigs suffer before been killed.

Hoichi the Earless is the name of a well-known figure from Japanese folklore. His story is well known in Japan. Some centuries ago there lived at Akamagaséki a blind man named Hoichi, who was famed for his skill in recitation and in playing upon the biwa. According to legend, Hoichi was a blind minstrel with an amazing gift for the biwa (a loquat-shaped Japanese lute). Despite his talents, Hoichi was very poor and was forced to live at Amidaji Temple under the care of a friendly priest. There’s an interesting stories behind how he lost his ear to the Samurai and the priest wrote kanji characters all over Hoichi’s body rendered him invisible to the samurai. Hoichi’s ordeal had freed him from the spirit’s power, and he went on to recover from his wounds and become a famous musician. His story become well known and had it appearing in the books as well as in film.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Reading through the Royal Song Of Saraha paints a thousands words . Such a meaningful song or rather deep poem, will be wonderful if I could understand enough some of those words, its more of a deep Dharma teaching to me. This song of existential freedom was composed by the Glorious Master Yogin Saraha and translated in English translation by Herbert V. Guenther.
Thank you and with folded hands Rinpoche.

HH the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche is an erudite, and highly attained lama. Millions of Gelug practitioners from all over monasteries view H H the Gaden Tripa as the supreme leader of their lineage. H H the Gaden Tripa gave a three-day teaching on the sacred Highest Anuttarayoga Tantra practice of Vajrayogini at his Dharma centre in France, Thar Deu Ling. A very special text containing teachings composed by HH Gaden Trisur Rinpoche were also distributed. Incredible , HH Gaden Trisur Rinpoche continue giving teachings at the advanced age of 92. Haven writen a book about the Vajrayogini practice shows us the importance of this practice in this day and age. Merely by reciting her mantra daily without break can gain spiritual attainments, perceive her holy form, and even ascend to her pure land — Kechara Paradise.
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound knowledge about Vajrayogini

In Tibetan Buddhism, refuge and the guru are closely intertwined. Taking refuge in the three jewels expresses the most fundamental connection to Buddhism. Having confronted the limitations of samsara, we are ready for a change. Taking refuge involves seeking protection and guidance from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, with the guru often seen as a living embodiment of these three jewels. The guru’s role is to guide practitioners towards enlightenment by pointing them to the path and helping them overcome obstacles. Refuge is not merely a symbolic act but a deep commitment to transforming one’s mind and life by relying on these sources of inspiration and guidance. Taking refuge doesn’t protect us from problems such as illness, accidents, and other difficulties. Rather, it provides us with knowledge to transform obstacles into opportunities. We learn how to relate to difficulties in a new way, and this protects us from confusion and despair. Reading again to understand better .

Reading through this blog of what life was like for Pastor Jean Ai, during lockdown. The Movement Control Order which began in 2020 reminded me of how I went through during the lock down. Staying alone by myself as the rest of my family member outstation in KL. Not easy after all everything as such as getting foods etc. I do my shopping twice a week having doing all the necessary disinfection and so on. What I did at home during the lock down and how I spent my time, days indeed not easy Do reading, watching videos at Tsem Rinpoche blog , learning and practicing and in-fact did full prostration and mantras recitation daily . It had changed my life since then and had completed 100k . Through a Dharma brother I managed to get hold of some mantras for rolling too. Interesting,…..watching Pastor Jean Ai’s video at how she interact with friends that’s awesome.
Thank you Rinpoche and Jean Ai for this interesting sharing.

n Tibetan Buddhism, prostrations are a way to express deep respect and devotion to the Three Jewels for the Buddha, his teachings (Dharma), and the spiritual community (Sangha). Prostration is a physical act of deep reverence or worship, which offers a range of benefits across spiritual, physical, and mental domains. It can be a form of prayer, a means of expressing devotion. It is a deeply symbolic act that purifies negative actions, accumulates merit, and cultivates humility and compassion. It can be a form of prayer, a means of expressing devotion. This act is believed to be beneficial for practitioners, cultivating humility, eliminating negative thoughts, and accumulating positive karma which is believed to lead to positive future outcomes and spiritual progress. Whether we believe in karma or not, our negative karma increases without purification. Hence its important , to purify our negative karma through the Vajrasattva and prostrations practice. It also seen as a way to purify our negative mind, emotions and thought patterns, such as pride and ego if we do it well . Thus, the practice of purification is one of the most important solutions to our problems and is extremely necessary for everyone of us. It is more important to put our everyday life’s effort into the practice of purification to attain spiritual realization.
The Vajrasattva purification practice, which is more powerful than negative karma. With this practice can prevent us from experiencing the problems that negative karma would otherwise bring us. Reciting the Vajrasattva mantra before going to bed to prevent whatever negative karma we have created that day from multiplying it is an incredibly powerful method that it makes our life very light and easy and keeps us happy and peaceful in our inner life.
Both Vajrasattva practice and prostrations done with good visualizations are indeed very beneficial for practitioners.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing and teachings .

Du Fu (712-770 AD), also known as Tu Fu, was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty, often considered one of the greatest alongside Li Bai. He was a poet-historian and a poet-sage, known for his realistic depictions of human suffering and reflections on the troubled times of his era. His poems, reflecting his personal experiences and the political instability of the time, have had a lasting impact on both Chinese and Japanese literary traditions.
    Interesting read.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
