Yantai City

Yantai City, also known as the “Most Charming City”, is located in the northeast of Shandong Province, China. Unlike the metropolitan cities like Beijing or Shanghai, Yantai offers charming, picturesque sceneries that made it one of the most habitable places in the world.

Yantai in Chinese means “smoke tower”. The city derives its name from watchtowers that were built on Mount Qi to send smoke signals as warnings against Japanese pirate invasions during the Ming Dynasty (14th-17th century). About 100 km away from Yantai City is the city of Longkou. Administered under Yantai City, Longkou City’s most famous attraction is the Longkou Nanshan Scenic Area.

Nanshan Scenic Area started its development in the 90s by the Nanshan Group to protect the greenery, and to preserve the culture and heritage in this area, as well as to promote tourism activities.

There are three sections at the Nanshan Scenic Area namely: the Chinese History, Cultural and Religious Park; Donghai Tourist Resort; and the Theme Park. People can visit Longkou Nanshan Scenic Area for relaxation and at the same time engage in spiritual activities for their peace of mind.

The Chinese History, Cultural and Religious Park is built with the intention to preserve and promote the religious and Chinese culture. Specifically for the preservation of the Buddhism, this park holds the Nanshan Giant Buddha, Nanshan Temple, Jade Medicine Buddha, Nanshan Huayan Park and Xiangshui (Perfume) Nunnery.

Apart from the Longkou Nanshan Giant Buddha, which is the main attraction in Longkou Nanshan Scenic Area, the other two attractions are the indoor Jade Medicine Buddha and the Nanshan Huayan Park.

Longkou Nanshan Giant Buddha

Located at the Longkou Nanshan Scenic Area is the world’s largest, seated bronze Buddha statue. The Longkou Nanshan Giant Buddha statue is 38.55 metre-tall (126 feet) and weighs 380 tonnes. It was completed and consecrated in 2004. The Longkou Nanshan Giant Buddha is also sometimes referred to as the Buddha of the East due to its location in China.

Magnificent Longkou Nanshan Giant Buddha

The magnificent Longkou Nanshan Giant Buddha

The Longkou Giant Buddha is seated, with right hand holding an Abhaya mudra (gesture of fearlessness) and left hand holding a Varada mudra (gesture of granting boons). Abhaya mudra signifies fearlessness, peace and comfort while Varada mudra signifies compassion and wish fulfilment. When the two mudras are combined, they represent the Buddha’s compassionate aspiration to liberate all sentient beings from sufferings, fulfil all sentient beings’ wishes and bring peace, calm, comfort to all sentient beings. The eyes of the Longkou Nanshan Giant Buddha gaze compassionately at all sentient beings. With a slight smile on his face, whether you are standing far or close to the Buddha, you can always feel Buddha’s caring energy like a mother to a child.

Under the lotus base of the Buddha statue is the Appreciation Hall, the Ten Thousand Buddhas Hall and the Buddhism History Museum.

The building of Longkou Nanshan Giant Buddha was started by a few farmers about 30 years ago. Soon, another 20 villagers joined the farmers. Later, the construction of the Giant Buddha was taken over by the Nanshan Group as part of the Nanshan Scenic Area project.

Nanshan008

Many kind donors have contributed towards the construction of the Longkou Nanshan Giant Buddha. With a donation of RMB200 (USD30) and above, the name of the sponsors are displayed in the hall and regular blessing prayers are performed by the Sangha members of Nanshan Temple.

At the base of the Medicine Buddha fountain is the 12 protectors and surrounding the Medicine Buddha fountain are the eight Bodhisattvas as described in the Medicine Buddha Sutra.

Prayer Wheel Corridor

nanshan025

There are 108 Tibetan prayer wheels installed on the corridor for people to collect merits when they turn the wheels.

Xiangshui (Perfume) Nunnery

nanshan026

The original nunnery was built in 1600. It is said that during that time a girl from a Han family was very inclined towards Buddhism, and she only wanted to practice Dharma. Since there were not many temples in the area that time, her parents constructed the nunnery for her so she could do her practice and at the same time her parents could visit her anytime they wanted to.

When Nanshan Group rebuilt the nunnery on the same site in 1999, a very nice and pleasant scent dispersed when the old structure of the nunnery was pulled down. Hence, the nunnery is named Xiangshui (Perfume) Nunnery.

Indeed Nan Shan temple is very beautiful, like what was mentioned in the article, by just looking at the pictures, I already can feel the love and care by the Buddha to the sentient beings., The place was kept amazingly clean and it’s really a beautiful place to visit.

It is important to keep the temple clean, because when the temple is attractive to the tourist, then it can attract many visitors to visit the place, when they visit the temple, they make prayers, they take photos, and they can get blessings. From the pictures, you can see that how well Nan Shan was kept with the maintenance.

When I see this name, I keep reminding the phrase people used to say when greeting others during their birthday – goof fortune is as much as the East Sea, the longevity of life is as high as South Mountain (Nan Shan)

It is such a pleasure to see all the beautiful pictures, it will be great if we can visit this temple 1 day soon 🙂

Nashan Mountain is located in Longkou City’s Lushan Mountain in the Shandong Province. The area is home to beautiful natural landscapes as well as grand, elegant manmade designs. A national tourist area which consists of a Chinese history and culture park as well as religious culture park. The Nashan Great Buddha is the largest bronze tin sitting Buddha today in the world. Wow….. The statue is 380 ton heavy and 38.66 meters high. The Jade Buddha in the park is also the largest ever indoor Buddha at 660 ton weight and 13.66 meters height. Amazing findings………these two statues of Buddha are the two biggest highlights of the area. Beautiful Chinese architecture and historical culture with different styles from different periods of dynasties. The gardens and temples surrounding the giant Buddha are lovely. Really great place to visit and get some interesting photographs. Have not been there , wish I could visit and see it.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing.

Today, the practical applications of Einstein’s theories include the development of the television, remote control devices, automatic door openers, lasers, and DVD-players. Recognized as TIME magazine’s “Person of the Century” in 1999, Einstein’s intellect, coupled his strong passion for social justice and dedication to pacifism, left the world with infinite knowledge and pioneering moral leadership. So was his passion for Buddhism and its teachings. Today we present you Einstein’s world famous quotes on Buddhism that will be of a great value to understand how much the Buddhism was close to Einstein’s heart.

An Introduction To The Buddha Form And Iconography

In this book, Tsem Rinpoche introduces us to a rich range of Buddha forms, providing basic information to kindle our interest in the iconography of statues –their postures, gestures and mudras, the ornaments and the implements they hold. Each one of these is a symbolic teaching in itself. Indeed the entire iconography, colour and pose of each Buddha statue combined presents a path to ultimate enlightenment.

Everyone wants to be happy in life. Everyone wants to achieve happiness. For an athlete, for instance, his idea of ultimate happiness is to win a gold medal in the Olympics.

For the glory of a gold medal and a few minutes on the podium with your national flag going up while they play your national anthem, you deprive yourself of the pleasure of nightlife, relationships, fun, going out with friends or even your partner. You will subject yourself to a special and stringent diet, train eight hours a day, sleep early and not stay up. You will stay away from friends and curtail many activities because you have to train and work hard. You have to push and discipline yourself.

You really have to transform yourself and change your schedule in order to get your body ready in the next four to eight years in the hope that when the day of the Olympics arrives you will be selected to participate.

Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring and motivating article. People can say many things about us but we will know very well how we are and how we are. We should not react to the comments people make on us.

However, I do agree that we have to contemplate on what people say about us. If what they say about us is true, especially our bad qualities, we have to change. If it is not true, we just have to move on and ignore the comments.

In “Compassion Conquers All”, Tsem Rinpoche shows how through the practice of “The Eight Verses of Mind Transformation”, this wish for others to be happy can engender a state of mind of supreme love, compassion and altruism. This is the mind of Bodhicitta that wishes every sentient being to be free from every suffering and to enjoy real lasting happiness, and is determined to realise this wish by achieving the state of mind of real ultimate happiness and peace (that is free from every suffering) first, and then helping all beings attain it. This state of mind of ultimate peace and real lasting happiness is called Enlightenment or Full Awakening, where one achieves the qualities of omniscience, love and ability so as to have the power and ability to help others reach this same state.

John Eaton Calthorpe Blofeld (John Blofeld) (1913 – 1987) was a renowned writer of Chinese culture, Taoism, Zen Buddhism, and Mahayana Buddhist tradition. His literary endeavours had helped in introducing Buddhism to the Western world and inspired many to follow his path on the journey of spiritual discoveries.

During his lifetime, John Blofeld had travelled widely around China and other countries, visited sacred mountains and monasteries, and met with hermits, sages and great Buddhist masters of various traditions. As his popularity grew, he used his fame to inspire younger writers to follow his path and helped to launch their career by writing forewords or providing constructive feedback to their maiden literary effort. Those who had the privilege to be acquainted with this extraordinary man, remembered his generosity, warmth, and sincerity. Even today, his writing and unique experiences continue to inspire others to the path of spirituality and give insight to the world of China when the refined Chinese civilisation was omnipresent

Following our habituated way of thinking, the source of whatever happiness we seek from marriage appears to be the picture of an ideal partner. In fact, even as we embark on a long-term relationship with our partners, we already have expectations and projections on our partner. We expect to be happy when our partner conforms to our own set of norms, way of thinking, and expectations. In order to correct this mistaken view, we need to look deeply into ourselves and see that happiness does not come from holding mistaken projections and expectations. In fact, when these expectations and projections are unfulfilled, they are likely to cause us disappointment, pain, and anguish instead.

Tsarchen Losal Gyatso (1502 – 1566 CE) was a famous master and the founder of the Tsarpa lineage of the Sakya tradition centred at Dar Drangmoche Monastery in the central Tsang province of Tibet.

The great Tsarchen Losal Gyatso is the 21st lineage holder of the Vajrayogini tantric tradition stemming from the Mahasiddha Naropa himself. In fact, by engaging in Vajrayogini as his main practice, Tsarchen Losal Gyatso gained high realisations and went on to have several important visionary experiences associated with her. Due to his high realisations, Tsarchen also beheld pure visions of Padmasambhava, Vajrayogini, Chakrasamvara, Kalachakra, Yamantaka, other tantric deities and masters.

This is a very interesting article to know that Mongolian astrology is closely related to Buddhism. Some of us might think astrology is a very superstitious practice but it is practised in Buddhism.

From the scripture, our body body parts are related to different planets. In a way, it means our body and the universe are in fact one. Therefore, we should respect our environment because if our mother nature has lost its balance, our health will be affected as well.

The most recent celebrity that was reported to have shown some interest in Buddhism is Katy Perry. People often think being a celebrity is wonderful, but behind all the smiles and the beauty, there is much suffering and pain… We have seen it many times, and celebrities who fail to cope with the stress and public pressure often take up dangerous habits or suicidal. I’m not claiming that I know of Katy Perry’s life and difficulties, but as long as we are all in samsara, we are all subjected to suffering.

The International Mountain Museum (IMM) in Pokhara, Nepal isq all about the 14 highest mountains in the world…all of them are at least 8,000 meters in height! Those interested in mountaineering would come to Pokhara as most of the trekking routes start from there.

Out of the top 14 mountains, 8 are within Nepal! Since 1920 (when mountaineering was still new to the world) many researchers would come to this beautiful country to do research on things like how the mountains were formed…what the exact height of the mountain is…what minerals can be found there etc.

Malaysia adopts a constitutional monarchy system that is a mixture of hereditary and elected monarchs. Malaysia consists of several administrative regions across thirteen states and three federal territories. Nine states are ruled by monarchs, four states are supervised by a Yang di-Pertua Negeri or Governor, and the Federal Government controls the remaining three federal territories.

Meditation puts children in touch with their most natural condition, which is free, expressive, cooperative, loving and peaceful. This is a direct counter for everything else in society that encourages them to think of only “me, me, me” from a young age, and to engage in competition which encourages division. Hence meditation is something our world desperately needs because the competition we teach children will become greed when they are adults competing to win. It’s this greed and need to win that is slowly killing our planet and destroying all of our natural resources. Hence meditation is one of the most valuable habits a child can be encouraged to learn and integrate as part of their daily life.

Contrary to popular belief, not all meditation techniques produce similar effects of body and mind. Indeed, a recent study by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has demonstrated for the first time that different types of Buddhist meditation – namely the Vajrayana and Theravada styles of meditation – elicit qualitatively different influences on human physiology and behaviour, producing arousal and relaxation responses respectively.

In particular, the NUS research team found that Vajrayana meditation, which is associated with Tibetan Buddhism, can lead to enhancements in cognitive performance.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

  • What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
