Compassionate Doggie Fence
I received this MMS message from Margaret Lee on 7/3/2011:
Dear Rinpoche,
Today, we are installing a metal fence at Sharon’s house to provide a safe space for the doggies run about in while preventing them from running out when the auto gate is opened. The awning to shield off this area from rain will be installed tomorrow.
Susan also wants to cement up half of the old pebble wash tiles/grass area so that it will be easier for the maid to clean up the doggies’ waste. Here below is the pic of the metal fence in installation. And yes the fence is high enough.
Thank you,
Margaret
These photos are of the workers installing the fence that will protect Sharon and Susan’s dogs from running out when the autogate is opened.
Many people live in link houses here in Malaysia, with a little yard in the front. When they open their autogate, their dogs can run out… some may go missing and some of them may get run over by a car. Some have been run over. It’s very dangerous if you were out the whole day and your dog gets overly excited with you coming home… there is a chance that you may run over your dog too.
The other alternative is to tie your dog up. I see many dogs who are attached to a chain, especially when guests come over. This causes psychological damage to the dog and it’s very unpleasant for them. I wouldn’t want to be tied up… it’s much better to be in a little enclosure than to be tied up.
I am so so happy to hear Sharon and Susan would do this to protect their doggies. It’s very kind and compassionate of them. I hope it encourages others to do this for their dogs too. I very much many people will spend the extra care to do this for their doggie friends. You say you love them, then do it.

Update: 8/3/2011
After installing the fence, Sharon and Susan got the awning installed above the doggie area! It’s an extension of the existing awning on the front porch. This is so that their doggie will have a safe and sheltered area if it starts raining.
They also got the gutter to be re-directed, so that the raining would flow off the awning in one direction and not get their doggie all wet when it rains.
Very thoughtful moves to make sure that their doggie is comfortable in all weather conditions! hehe
Thank you Sharon and Susan for caring and without knowing it setting a wonderful example for others to follow.

Well even it an old post, yet reading it with interest how much Sharon and Susan cares for their furry friends. A very good example for friends to follow. Yes I have heard many doggie ran out , feeling excited and lost their way home. Building such a place will definitely comfortable for the doggie to go freely….more spacious. I feel sorry for doggie attached to a chain. Animals have no voice , they can’t ask for help, they can’t ask for freedom and can’t ask for protection. Humanity must be their voice.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
It is incredible how smart Oser girl is. She can steal the treat away from Dharma boy and so casually. Wow. She is so smart. A must watch short video!! Tsem Rinpoche

The latest occupant behind the doggie fence is currently Pendek who is up for adoption, along with many other dogs (14 in total if I am not mistaken) who are looking for new homes! Please help. If interested, contact my mother sharon8@gmail.com for more details.
Another update on animal renovations at our house – We have a little atrium inside our house, and today, Pastor Susan arranged to have a fan installed there so that she can put rescued animals there and it is comfortable for them. We also have put fencing at the back of our house so the 3 puppies from KFR which are being treated for some skin problems can stay there now. Right now, we have six dogs in our house and 7 cats.. (one cat is also from KFR which Pastor Susan just got spayed).
Yes, my house is a zoo.
that is very nice of them, i have been to aunty Sharon’s house many times and now i know where that doggie fence came from. i hope the doggies have a fun time playing in their new area… have a good time doggies.
A little update on the fence: Since Jannic the doggy has passed away late 2011. The little doggy area is all for Lester baby. Lester really enjoys staying in the sheltered cement area, especially when it rains. He does not like being locked in and would frequently jump over the fence. So, when Mama or Aunty Susan wants to park their car under the porch. I would usher him into the other side of the fence 😀
Usually when we plan for house renovation/extension, we only take into consideration how it will after our “human” house members, not taking into consideration how such changes will affect our pets.
Sharon and Susan went a step further, planning the renovation with only their pets in mind.
Wow good idea… Any contact of the people that made the little fence..? i would like to install one too..
Contact Sharon from our KMP dept..she can help.
It’s very thoughtful of Susan and Sharon to come out with this idea of fencing up a garden space for their dogs to move around. I hope more pets’ owner will do something too to make their pets comfortable and have a place to move about freely in safety instead of being tied or caged up.
Malaysian people should appeal for funding/fundraising to save their doggies from having this type of common accident or maybe rich people could sponsor them to have similar minor renovations carried out. It would also be cheaper on a larger scale and it would be expeditious if an organisation could be set up to address this and other similar, prevalent, and easily reparable issues pertaining to animal welfare.
Sounds like an ideal cross-cultural/racial/religious, etc. exercise in that it is something which effects everyone. Maybe I will see in the news really all the Buddhists (Tibetan, Zen, Theravadin, Pure Land, etc.), the Christians, the Muslims, the Hindus, etc. fundraising and organising and working in harmony with each other for the sake of the safety of their best friends who haz furz and cheezburgerz.
What do you think?
Wow! that was a very good idea of both Sharon and Susan converting a part of the garden of their house for their doggies to live and run around. This is very good. So far I have not seen a portion of a garden in any landed property being used to housed their dogs. I have seen kennels being built for the dogs only. The dogs are put into kennels or are being tied to a leash. This does not allow the dogs the freedom to run around. This little garden space will be very comfortable for their doggies to run around and be happy. I am sure this idea will catch up with a lot of people.
Yes, Mama and Aunty Susan wants to make sure that the dogs will have the best comfort. One of the main reasons that Aunty Susan wants to cement of the pebble area is because Jannic pees without knowing it, then it will be easier to clean it. My doggies are already smart, they already know how to go in and poo in the grass area 🙂 I really do not want Lester or Jannic to be injured in any way.
