The Relationship between Buddhist Tantra and Hindu Tantra

Although some scholars have maintained that Buddhist tantra was derived from Hinduism, this is not correct. The theory, prevalent among those who adhere to the tenets of the Hinayana, is based on a superficial resemblance of various elements of the two systems, such as the forms of the deities, the meditations on psychic veins and airs, the fire rituals, etc. Though certain practices, like the repetition of mantras, are common to both Hindu and Buddhist tantric traditions their interpretation, i.e. the inner meaning, is vastly different. Furthermore, Buddhist tantra is superior because, unlike Hinduism, it contains the three principal aspects of the Path: renunciation, the enlightened attitude and the right philosophy.

To elaborate: as even animals want freedom from suffering, there are non-Buddhist practitioners who wish to be free from contaminated feelings of happiness and so cultivate the preparatory state of the fourth absorption (Dhyana). There are even some non-Buddhists who temporarily renounce contaminated feelings of happiness and attain levels higher than the four absorptions. However, only the Buddhists renounce all these as well as neutral feelings and all-pervasive suffering. Then by meditating on the sufferings together with their causes, which are mental defilements, they can be abandoned forever. This is why, while non-Buddhists meditate on the form and formless states and attain the peak of worldly existence, samadhi, they cannot abandon the mental defilements of this state. So, when they meet with the right circumstances anger and the other passions develop, karma is created and the wheel of the circle of rebirth begins to turn.

Because of this and similar reasons, such practices are not fit to be included in the Mahayana. They resemble neither the common sutra path comprising: the attitude of renunciation which wishes for freedom from the cycle of rebirths; the wisdom which correctly understands egolessness, which is the right philosophy acting as an opponent to ignorance-the root of cyclic existence; and the development of the mind which aims for complete enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings; nor do they resemble the practices of the exclusive tantric path of the Great Vehicle.

The Origin of Tantra

The tantras were spoken by the Buddha himself in the form of his supreme manifestation as a monk, also as the great Vajradhara and in various manifestations of the central deity of specific mandalas. The great beings, Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Vajrapani and others, urged by the Buddha, also taught some tantras.

In terms of the four classes of tantra, the Kriya tantras were taught by the Buddha in the form of a monk, in the realm of the thirty-three gods on the summit of Mt. Meru, and in the human world where Manjushri and others were the chief hearers.

The Pung-Zang tantras were taught in the realm of Vajrapani. Others were taught by the teacher, Buddha himself, and with his blessings some were explained by Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri and Vajrapani while others were spoken by worldly gods.

The Carya tantras were also taught by the teacher Buddha in the form of his supreme manifestation in the celestial realms and in the realm called Base and Essence Adorned with Flowers.

The Yoga tantras were taught by the Enlightened One when he arose in the form of the central deity of each mandala in such places as the summit of Mt. Meru and in the fifth celestial realm of desire.

The Anuttara tantras were also taught by the Buddha. In the land of Ögyan the Buddha, having manifested the mandala of Guhyasamaja, taught King Indrabodhi this tantra. The Yamantaka tantras were taught by the teacher Buddha at the time of the subduing of the demonic forces and they were requested by either the consort of Yamantaka or by the consort of Kalacakra. The Hevajra tantra was taught by Lord Buddha when he arose in the form of Hevajra in the land of Madgadha at the time of destroying the four maras. The tantra was requested by Vajragarbha and by the consort of Hevajra. Having been requested by Vajra Yogini, the Buddha, in the manifestation as Heruka on the summit of Mt. Meru, taught the root tantra of Heruka and, when requested by Vajrapani, taught the explanatory tantra. As for the Kalacakra tantra, the mighty Buddha went south to the glorious shrine of Dharnacotaka and there, manifesting the mandala of the Dharmadhatu speech surmounted by the mandala of Kalacakra, taught this tantra to King Chandrabhadra and others. Although he appeared in many different manifestations, actually the tantras were taught by the enlightened teacher, Lord Buddha.

What happens during an initiation

In the initiations of each of the four classes of tantra there are many differences, some great and some small, and so therefore one initiation is not sufficient for all mandalas. At the time of initiation some fortunate and qualified disciples, when receiving the initiation from a qualified master, develop the wisdom of the initiation in their mind streams. Unless this happens, sitting in initiation rows and experiencing the initiations of the vase and water, etc. will implant instincts to listen to the Dharma but little else. An initiation is necessary to study tantra because if the secrets of tantra are explained to someone who has not received initiation, the guru commits the seventh tantric root downfall and the explanation will be of no benefit whatsoever to the mind of the disciple.

The relationship between Sutra and Tantra

Regarding renunciation and bodhicitta, there is no difference between Sutrayana and Tantrayana, but regarding conduct there is. Three kinds of conduct have been taught: the disciple who admires and has faith in the Hinayana should separate himself from all desires; the disciple who admires the Mahayana should traverse the stages and practice the perfections; while he who admires the deep teachings of tantra should work with the conduct of the path of desire.

From the point of view of the philosophy, there is no difference in emptiness as an object of cognition but there is a difference in the method of its realization.

In the sutra tradition the conscious mind engages in meditative equipoise on emptiness, while in tantra the innate wisdom, an extremely subtle mind, is involved and the difference therefore is great. The main practice of Sutrayana, engaging in the path as a cause to achieve the form body and wisdom body of a buddha, is the accumulation of wisdom and virtue for three countless eons and the accomplishment of one’s own buddhafields. Therefore, Sutrayana is known as the causal vehicle. In tantra one concentrates and meditates, even while still a beginner, on the four complete purities which are similar to the result—that is, the completely pure body, pure realm, pure possessions and pure deeds of an enlightened being. Thus tantra is known as the resultant vehicle.

The Four Traditions

As for the sutra tradition, the explanation of the Hinayana and Mahayana is the same in all the four great traditions. Also, as far as the preliminary practices are concerned, there are no differences apart from the names. In the Gelug tradition they are called the Stages of the Path of the Three Motives; in the Kargyü they are known as the Four Ways to Change the Mind; the Sakya refer to Separation from the Four Attachments; while the Dri-gung Kargyu speak of the Four Dharmas of Dag-pa and the Five of Dri-gung.

In tantra, the individual master’s way of leading the disciples on the path depends on his experience and the instructions of the tantric root texts, together with the commentaries of the great practitioners. These result in the entrance into practice being taught a little differently. However, all are the same in
leading to the final attainment of the state of Vajradhara.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is in Dharamsala, which is broken into two parts. Upper Dharamsala is where the Dalai Lama’s palace is located with his audience room and main prayer hall. It is also the location of the Dialectics School, Gaden Shartse’s guesthouse, restaurants, tourist hotels and main tourist areas.

A short ride down takes you to the lower part of Dharamsala where the Tibetan government is located. It is the location of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Nechung monastery, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, the Tibetan arts centre…it’s all in one area. And the reason why it’s split into upper and lower Dharamsala is because the area is mountainous.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives was established by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government to preserve all the ancient texts – both secular and spiritual – of Tibet and in the process, translate them into various languages like English. This book, Overview of Buddhist Tantra, by Panchen Sonam Drakpa was one of the books translated into English. What’s very interesting is that the book very clearly says that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, one of the five main disciples of Lama Tsongkhapa. It also says that after that, he was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen.

So the book is basically saying that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, Panchen Sonam Drakpa and Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen – the three Drakpas – are of the same mindstream.

Now that’s very peculiar because if Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen’s previous life is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, the renowned composer of 45 volumes of Dharma texts, the abbot of three monasteries AND the 15th Gaden Tripa, the holder of Lama Tsongkhapa’s throne…if that’s the case, how can Panchen Sonam Drakpa take rebirth as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen and become an evil spirit and have a negative mind?

Prior to Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, he was Panchen Sonam Drakpa and before that, he was Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa. How can a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa reincarnate as the erudite master Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and then die and reincarnate as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen…and then Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, due to a bad and negative prayer, become the evil spirit Dorje Shugden? How is that possible? Logically, it’s not.

What’s incredible is that all of this was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives under the Dalai Lama’s guidance. They contradict themselves because on one hand, the Tibetan leaders say Dorje Shugden is an evil spirit. On the other hand they’re printing a book saying that Panchen Sonam Drakpa, whose later incarnation became Dorje Shugden, is of this illustrious mindstream.

So how can the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, which is under the auspices of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government, print the translation of a book composed by the previous incarnation of a so-called evil spirit? How can they then say in the book that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, and his next life was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen?

Prior to the Dorje Shugden ban and controversy, everyone in Tibet knew that Dorje Shugden is Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and that Panchen Sonam Drakpa is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. The three Drakpas, they are one mindstream emanating again and again to benefit other beings.

And as we all know, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen became Dorje Shugden so it totally doesn’t make sense to call him an evil spirit, then highlight all of his previous lives as erudite masters, and publish all of this information under their own library. So you can see the contradictions. You can read all of this for yourself in Overview of Buddhist Tantra, which was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives.

    OVERVIEW OF BUDDHIST TANTRA

GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE CLASSES OF TANTRA,
CAPTIVATING THE MINDS OF THE FORTUNATE ONES

    BY
    PANCHEN SONAM DRAGPA
    (Pan-chen bSod-nams grags-pa, 1478-1554)

    O Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel! (Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal!)
In the vast expanse of Your bodhi-mind,
The mind that the Buddhas have lauded for as many as
    one hundred times,
You have developed “merit” shining like the sun.
Through Your skill in learning, debate and writing,
As illuminating as one hundred thousand sun rays,
You have developed in You a complete knowledge of
    the entire sutras and tantras,
Resembling a garden of flowers in full bloom.
    The power of Your speech is like the sun;
The fame of your name has reached the three realms of
    this world.
O Sonam Dragpa, the teacher of teachers!
I bow down at your feet.

In the vast garden of Your great teachings,
The intelligent young people gather for
The ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission,’
Just as they are attracted to
The one hundred thousand types of nectar
Dripping from a flower of one hundred petals.
May I be able to experience
The taste of the secret tantra!

Panchen Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the holder of sutra and Vajrayana teachings, was a master whose outstanding learning and spiritual accomplishments are well known by all the learned ones in Tibet. His first incarnation came in the form of one of the five prestigious disciples of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) and became known as Vinaya Holder (Dulzin) Dragpa Gyaltsen (Gragspa rgyal-mtshan). Then came Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the author of the present text. The next was Nagri Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsen (mNga’-ris sPrul-sku Grags-pa rgyal-mtshan). In this way, a line of his incarnations, each with the Dragpa (gragspa) surname, followed successively.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was born in the 14th century in Tsetang (rTsed-thang) in the Lhoka (Lho-kha) region of Central Tibet. He entered the great seat of learning, Sera Thekchenling (Se-ra theg-chen-gling) monastic university, where he became the personal disciple of spiritual master Donyo Dangden (Dhon-yod dang-ldan) and His Holiness the Second Dalai Lama Gedun Gyatso (dGe-‘dun rgya-mtsho). Under them, he studied the entire teachings of sutra, tantra and their commentaries, and became known for his outstanding learning. He also received from them the empowerments, reading transmissions, guides and instructions of the entire body of spiritual training. On becoming the fully blessed one, the Dalai Lama appointed him the abbot of the Loseling (Blo-gsalgling) college, one of the four colleges of Drepung (‘Bras-dpung)- the most prestigious monastic university in Tibet before 1959, with over 10,000 monks on its register. He continued to be the abbot of this college for the next six years; and after him the tenure for each of his successors in this position was fixed for a period of six years, a rule that is followed even today.

He was then appointed the head of the Gelugpa (dGe-lugs-pa) order, the throne holder of Gaden (dGa’-ldan), thus becoming the 15th regent of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-khapa), the second Buddha. In his eulogy to him, Khedrub Gelek Pelsang (mKhas-grub dGe-legs dpal- bzang) says:

O Lama, the second successor of the Unsubduable One,
The regent of the Lord of Dharma,
    You are the one who made the virtuous qualities thrive;
You are the one who ascended to the golden throne uplifted
    by the fearless lions.
    May Your success thrive forever!

He continued to be the throne holder for the next seven years, during which time he promoted the spread of Lord Tsongkhapa’s (Tsong-kha-pa) precious teachings, the Gelug (dGe-lugs) tradition, across the land in all directions. He also paid special attention to the practice of monastic rules and the learning and meditation of Buddhism in the monasteries such as Sera (Se-ra), Drepung (‘Bras-spungs), Kyomolung (sKyo-mo-lung), Phagmo Chode (Phag-mo chos-sde), Nyeding (Nye-sdings), Ödna (’Od-sna) and Chöde Rinchen (Chos-sde rin-chen) etc. and improved them to a great extent. He taught the Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso (bSod-nams rGya-mtsho) as the latter’s spiritual master. It was from him that the Dalai Lama received the name Sonam (bSod-nams).

His contributions in the literary field are enormous; and, indeed, they are the most valuable of all his contributions. Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) has rightly said:

    Of all one’s deeds,
The ‘deeds of speech’ are the most valuable.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was a person with an extraordinary talent for teaching, debate and writing. In his colophon to Bu mey chi don zab don sel wey dron mey (dBu ma’i spyi don zab don gsal ba’i sgron me), he wrote:

In the field of teaching, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would outdo them in this field, Arya Asanga and his
    brother transmigrated into another realm.

In the field of debate, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would find out the areas they had contradicted and
that I would examine them and put forth my arguments,
the logician Dignaga (Digh-naga) and Dharmakirti tactfully
    bypassed me.

In the field of writing, I am [next to none!] [In my eyes,]
Arya-sura was just good at spreading the works, which
are like ‘disputes~ between an insect and a field.’

I am the learned man. Peerless in the field of teaching,
    debate and writing!

For some this passage might sound utterly nonsensical, but the most learned master of our age, the talented teacher, logician and writer, the late tutor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Yongdzin Trijang Dorjechang (Yongs-‘dzin Khri-byang rDorje-‘Chang), said: “Now, some people of our time, who consider themselves learned scholars, think that this is utter nonsense; but they are wrong.”

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) wrote over 45 volumes of books dealing with many different subjects, such as the commentaries on the sutras and tantras, the saddhana manuals of the tutelary deities, history, religious history and so forth. Among these, one that is very important for all who wish to learn and meditate on the path-of the practical aspect of Buddhism in general and that of Vajrayana in particular is the Leg shey gyu de chi nam par shagpa kelsang gi yi trod (Legs bshad rgyud sde spyi’i rnam par bzhag pa skal bzang gi yid ‘phrod). In this book, he has explained precisely how the four tantras differ from one another. He has also fully described the stages of the two spontaneous path practices of the Vajrayana tradition, dealing with the ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission’, thus interpreting without mistake the intention of Adhi-Buddha Vajradhara.

May the reprint of this text, which the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is publishing herewith, bring peace and happiness in this world!

This is a good explanation between Buddhist and non Buddhist teaching and the explanation on Tantra and Sutra, especially the origins of the four Tantras. Thank you Rinpoche.

Reminds me of the saying, “we all climb the same mountain but approach from different directions”. The various vehicles and schools of Buddhism have different approaches but teaches the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni. Thus we should strive to stay on a particular approach lest we get confused and delayed trying to find another approach. This will only lead to a lateral progress or no progress at all.

Thank you also for sharing this article and clearing up the misconception that the Buddhist Tantra is a derivative of the Hindu tantra.

His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche has utmost authority on sutra and tantra. This article provides clear explanation on the various tantra, difference between sutra and tantra and the various practices. There are many ways to enlightenment, there is no one single way. Hence we should respect all practices and all religions.

This article truly explains why the differences between the Tantra and Sutra. It also explains clearly about the Tantra, allowing us to understand what is Tantra better.

Through this article it has also clarified my doubts as to if there is only one way to achieve enlightenment. H.H Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche has reassured us that there are many ways to enlightenment. There is no such thing as there is only a single way.

When I first saw HH Trijang Rinpoche’s picture in the old KPSS2, I gazed upon his image for a very long time and I could feel that this was no ordinary monk and must be a super human/lama. That time Rinpoche has not spoken to me about Trijang Rinpoche before. I have not even heard his name. His picture was so filled with warmth, compassion and wisdom and it was very alive! Then later I found out from Rinpoche who He is and it was mind blowing to know that Trijang Rinpoche was actually the Buddha’s chariot driver Chandra. I cannot believe this was possible cos I was new to Buddhism, but I believe that if Rinpoche says so then it is so and because you can feel just through his picture, this person was extraordinary!

Thank you Rinpoche for this explanation on various aspects of tantra by Trijang Rinpoche. We are truly so fortunate to be able to receive such knowledge from such a highly attained being.

One thing rings truth on this subject is that all roads eventually leads to one ultimate goal and to achieve that one must apply the teachings otherwise from which ever school of thought it comes from, it will just be dry scholastic knowledge. So whichever road we choose to take it dependent on our ability (level of mind) and the methods we use to get there. Of course Tantra being the quicker path to get to the destination, hence we will need to be trained more intensely with a qualified trainer – here being the “teacher” on the path to enlightenment.

This article gives a very clear explanation of what Tantra is, the differences between Tantra and Sutra. It gives a very clear message that whether it is Sutra or Tantra, whether it is Mahayana or Hinayana, whether it is Gelug or Kagyu or Sakya or Drigung Kagyu, they all lead the practitioners to enlightenment. No one is better than the other.

Anything composed by HH Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche we can fully rely on and trust. He is beyond doubts and beyond question. One of the greatest living scholars, yogi, monk and teacher of our time. He even composed the National Anthem being used today for Tibetans in exile. His incarnation stem back to being the personal Chariot driver of Buddha, Chandra.
In Tibet of yesteryears, they will not select just anyone to educate HH the 14th Dalai Lama. Well Trijang Rinpoche was chosen and passed knowledge to HH Dalai Lama for 30 successful years.
How beneficial HH Dalai Lama is to countless beings is beyond measure, from one cup poured into another, Trijang Rinpoche was infinitely kind to offer His everything to HH Dalai Lama. Incredible.
The first time I saw Trijang Rinpoche’s photo in Howell, New Jersey over 3 decades ago, I just cried and cried and cried..I don’t know why. I didn’t really know who he was and was too young to understand. But seeing His holy face made me cry so much..Tsem Rinpoche

The Lamrim said that Buddhas manifest in myriad forms and skilfully teach at different levels according to the disposition of individuals. This article gives a very concise explanation of the different approaches to teaching and philosophies depending on the mental capacity and motivation of different people.
It is very helpful to dispel doubts and confusion amongst students of the different schools of Buddhism.Yes, I am printing this article out to read it daily.

Even when talking on the various aspects of tantra, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche mentions clearly the types of suffering that one needs to be free from. For us that are still in samsara and experience suffering knowingly or not, the recognition of the types of suffering is a necessary early step of the path, and one could not make sense of higher trainings without engaging in the practice of renunciation first, which requires a correct understanding of what is meant by “suffering” in buddhist teachings (at least intellectually).
Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche also explains the differences between the practices of Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana in a concise, yet accute way that I never encountered before.
I feel like printing this out and reading it daily with my saddhanas for a while, so that I can absorb it best!

When’s the last time you heard the cliched and tired saying “all roads lead to rome”? Well, here’s another variation – “All paths lead to the same result”
When I was young, I used to always think that there was only one God, and he showed himself in different ways for different types of people, and recommended different methods in order to achieve the ultimate. And I never understood why people loved to argue about which religion is more superior, because fundamentally, all religions tell us to be good kind people.
Now that I have immersed myself in Buddhism, I was initially surprised to find out that there are so many different schools of thought, and different Lineages. And although I know that they lead to the same result, it is reassuring to read that statement in the words of trijang Rinpoche himself.

Most of us are very afraid or scared if we see the ghosts because we don’t know what to expect. We are afraid that they might harm us or disturb us. However, Buddha Shakyamuni taught us not to be afraid of them because being born as a ghost or spirit, it is actually a great suffering. We should generate compassion for them.

We take rebirth as a spirit or ghost due to our miserliness and anger. As a spirit, we will suffer from hunger, thirst, loneliness and tremendous cold and heat. We can also experience these when we are in human form, we should know how much pain it is to be in that state. Imagine if we have to live like this every day for hundreds or maybe thousands of years? Therefore, it is very important for us to cut the miserliness and also the anger.

Shantideva was born a wealthy prince. However, he gave up material wealth to join the monastery to become a monk. He was an extraordinary scholar, monk and philosopher. He is considered as one of the 84 Mahasiddhas. When Shantideva was in the monastery, he was not liked as he was not seen studying nor participating in the curriculum. But later, his delivery of the teaching of “The Way of the Bodhisattva” had showed him to be very learned to the surprise of his detractors.

Have you seen this unique depiction of Vajrayogini before? She is depicted with her holding her own severed head. This form of Vajrayogini is called Ucheyma. The practice of this form of Vajrayogini helps us to cut the root of our sufferings from the source, it is a lineage originated from the Panchen Lama. We are not allowed to do her practice or recite her mantra without the initiation. However, we can keep her image for us to create the cause to be able to receive her teaching in the future.

We are very fortunate to be able to watch these precious video of Dorje Shugden taking trance when Rinpoche was in the monastery and hotel. That shows how close the relationship of Rinpoche with Dorje Shugden. Taking trance in Tibetan Buddhism is very different from what we normally see in the Taoism lineage. An oracle is a sangha member who are specially trained otherwise the holy beings are not able to enter the oracle. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this precious footage to all of us.

Been a multi-racial country freedom of religion is enshrined in the Malaysian Constitution. Its not surprised to see so many beautiful Buddhist or Indian statues been built in Malaysia. Just in Malaysia we have six incredibly stunning Big Buddha Statues which is truly amazing. I have visited most of those Big statues except Wat Machimmaran, in Kelantan. Heard of the beauty of the “Sitting Buddha” which is the largest Buddha statue in a seated posture within South-East Asia. Wish I could visit this beautiful statue one day.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Great to know the many benefit of Shize’s practice. Shize is no other than Manjushri, emanating to specifically heal our sicknesses, clearing obstacles which enables us to gain realizations and to practice Dharma. Shize’s practice also helps us to calm disharmony situation down and to find peaceful resolutions where there is an argument . This practice has so much other benefits as well.
Thank you Rinpoche and the writers team for this wonderful article. May it continue to benefit more and more people now and in future.

Tengboche Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Sherpa community in the Khumbu valley of eastern Nepal. Wow….It is the largest monasteries in Everest region located at an altitude of 3,867 metres (12,687 ft), As a leading Buddhist centre of spirituality and pilgrims in the Himalayan area, half way to Everest Base Camp trek, the monastery has become a house name to trekkers and climbers to Everest Base Camp. Combine that with the history , rich culture, and unspoilt traditions of the indigenous Himalayan mountain people has attracted thousands of visitors yearly there. With the colourful Mani Rimdu festival, which is a culmination of Buddhist celebrations with religious gathering, songs have attracted tourist as well to Tengboche Monastery every October. I do wish to visit this beautiful monastery with a rich history someday. Beautiful pictures shared and interesting read.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing.

Thank you, Rinpoche for constantly thinking about ways to let us collect more merits in a short amount of time. Rinpoche is so kind to have placed numerous 9ft outdoor Buddha statues around Kechara Forest Retreat for us to circumambulate daily and collect merits. On top of that, Rinpoche also made mantra stones which can be invited from Naropa’s Cave to offer up to their favourite Buddha and placed them around or near the Buddha statue in Kechara Forest Retreat.

When more people offer mantra stones around a particular Buddha statue, when we circumambulate, it will be more effective. Why? Because each mantra stone represents the Buddha himself because the mantra is the manifestation of Buddha in the sound form. Hence, if the mantra stones are piling up around the statue and we go and circumambulate around the statue, it will be very powerful.

The whole place will be very powerful and we can get tons of merits and the person who offered the mantra stone will get tons of merits too! This is just one of the many ways that Rinpoche constantly coming up for us to earn merits in a short but effective way. Thank you, Rinpoche for kindness and compassion.

Freda Bedi was the first Western woman who took ordination in Tibetan Buddhism. She was ordained by the 16th Karmapa in Sikkim. She was quite involved in the Tibetan community when the Tibetans first arrived in India in 1959. At that time, Nehru had asked her to help the Tibetans and she was in charge of the Social Welfare Board.

Why is it important to read the biography of a high lama? Many high lamas have faced downfalls, plots, hatred and backstabbing in their lives. How they deal with them are inspiring and it gives us hopes. We can learn from them how to still be kind and compassionate even though we may be hurt.

Did you know there is a beautiful forest recreational park in Bukit Tinggi, Bentong called Lentang Forest Recreational Park? There are many tall old trees and scattered boulders in this forest reserve, it even has a look for the Jurassic Park in its more isolated areas. It is a very popular recreational choice for visitors on weekends.

It is so important to support sangha members. Without them we would not have the opportunity to learn dharma and it continue to degenerate. Sangha members are the one who focus full time into dharma and making sure to spread and benefit all sentient beings. Therefore, we should appreciate their kind effort and support them.

Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing with us what constitute a good presentation of a debatable topic. Evidence of visitors from space had been recorded in many civilisation throughout history, it even appeared in the volumes in Tibetan Buddhism scriptures. The fiery chariots of the “Gods” in those ancient records resemble spacecraft by today’s standard. It leads me to feel that as mankind gain more knowledge of the wider horizon of living beings, we are getting closer to realising how small we actually are.

Wow beautiful paintings of the six Sakya Trizins or throneholders of Sakya. Dorje Shugden as an enlightened Dharma Protector has been practiced and propitiated by many high attained great Lamas. Throughout Sakya tradition and up today, besides the Sakya throneholders, there were many other great Sakya throneholders who practised and proliferated Dorje Shugden Tanag.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing .

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Respected lamas of any devoted students will have two stupas for their remains. One stupa inside the ladrang of the lama and one stupa outside for the public to worship and do kora. By keeping the remains of the lama\'s previous lives in stupas, and making offerings, generates the merits for the current incarnation and future incarnations of the lama to be able to do more dharma work to benefit others.

Here is a beautiful indoor stupa to a lama in Tibet. It is up to the strength of the devotion of the students to create such stupas in respect and dedication of their lama\'s previous incarnation(s). TR

Living off the grid in Australia
A Jill Redwood is a jack of all trades, Jill built her own house on her property and lives entirely off the grid with no mains power or town water, mobile reception or television. Living on around $80 a week, Jill has over sixty animals to keep her company and an abundant garden that out serves as an organic supermarket right at her doorstep. Her main expenses are animal feed and the rates on her property. Watch this incredible three minute video and be inspired to live differently.

  • If there were more schools like this, then our kids would grow up with more caring awareness and kind emotions towards our environment and the people around them. They would grow up knowing that chasing materialism is not going to bring any happiness. I hope very much more schools like this would materialise. I hope in my future life I can attend a school like this. Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

“Food is the only thing that I have been longing for” - a single mother of two who currently living in Kuala Lumpur city. She mentioned that getting surplus food is not a matter of ignorance but a matter of not being able to afford “fresh” food. This is because when it comes to distributing salary, there are things such as house rental and utility fees that have to come before food. With welfare reforms, benefits being cut and sanctions, this marginalised community find themselves looking for a way to get through another day. #Kechara #foodbank #urbanpoor - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

Big thanks to Chloe Chan, Tracy, and Mun Mun for helping to send monthly food provision to the urban poor families. With busy lives, it can be really hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you, your family, and your community. The right match can help you to reduce stress, find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. Be one of us by registering yourself at 010-3333260. ❤️ #Kechara #foodbank #urbanpoor - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen
