Voodoo and the Tibetan Leadership

Practitioners of Voodoo were once discriminated against, segregated and their religion banned in the Americas. Thankfully, practitioners can now practise their religion openly and in peace.

Voodoo is a misunderstood religion and one that is in fact one of the earliest forms of human religion, stemming from before all forms of recorded history and is still practiced today. The word Voodoo is a term used to cover many religious practices, stemming from West Africa. The original religion still has millions of adherents in countries such as Benin, Togo, Ghana and Nigeria, especially among the Fon, Ewe, Yoruba and Kongo peoples. During the 17th and 18th centuries as European colonialists enslaved West Africans and had them forcefully shipped off to the Americas, they took with them their indigenous faith. They were beaten, separated from their family and friends, and chained. They underwent unimaginable suffering. Many were killed, others died during the torturous trip across the Atlantic Ocean, and yet still, many died in the new lands from starvation, disease, mistreatment and murder at the hands of their captors. The only thing they were able to take with them was what they held in their hearts which was their culture and their religion.

When they arrived in the Americas, they found themselves in a new land, enslaved alongside the native populations, such as the Kalinago and Taino in the Caribbean. As the two extremely different peoples found themselves together at the mercy of their vicious overlords, they were forced to live together and in doing so, their cultures and religions mixed. The French, Spanish and English colonisers also forced these people to practice their own forms of Christianity, primarily Roman Catholicism. The religion of the Africans and Native Americans were banned and outlawed. Those found practising their native religions were brutally beaten or even killed for being so-called ‘devil worshipers’ as the colonisers found their religions to be ‘heathenistic’ and ‘heretical’.

The enslaved West African people were transported to the Americas against their will and underwent unimaginable suffering at the hands of European colonizers.

The enslaved West African people were transported to the Americas against their will and underwent unimaginable suffering at the hands of European colonisers.

As Christianity was forced on them, the slaves began to convert, but secretly held on to their faith in the old ways and their belief systems. During the days they toiled on the plantations under deplorable conditions, but at night they were free to pray in secret. Their traditional customs of singing and dancing were also suppressed, but the slaves found a way to practice, they told their captors that they were praying to God, Jesus, the angels and the saints in their own way. Over time the spirits and beings worshipped by the slaves were hidden behind the forms of God, Jesus, the angels and the saints, and so arose a syncretised form of religion blending African, Native American and Christian beliefs, which is now known as Voodoo.

Beliefs

Throughout North America it became known as Louisana Voodoo and Hoodoo. In the Caribbean and other Central American areas it became known as Santeria, Cuban Vodu, Palo, Dominican Vudu, Haitian Vodou, Obeah and Shango Baptist. In South America, it became known as Candomble, Umbanda and Quimbanda. Each of these has their variations, but all of them have an overarching belief in a creator God similar to Christianity. However, God is so far removed from the troubles of ordinary life that he/she does not intercede in worldly life. Similar to Roman Catholic practitioners, they rather rely on the intercession of angels and saints. More commonly, however, they rely on differing levels of spirits who work under the angels and saints or forces of nature. These spirits are invoked for all sorts of reasons, from solving everyday problems such as illness, material resources, relationship problems, study and work, protection and blessings, to higher reasons related to the spiritual evolution of practitioners.

Forms of Voodoo that are practised in the Americas mixed with Christian and Native American belief. Today, it is very common to see Christian iconography as part of altars and shrines.

Dear friends around the world,

Voodoo is religion whose practitioners have never been official counted, but estimates say there are probably over 50 million practitioners of all its variations throughout the world. It includes the worship of spirits, dead ancestor spirits, nature, nature gods, and virulent spirits as well as benign spirits to perform all types of actions. It requires full devotion, commitment, animal sacrifices, rituals and at times the blood of animals. During the rituals many of the adherents will take trance of the differing levels of spirits and drink alcohol, smoke, dance, talk, sing, heal others, listen to problems, solve problems and accept sacrifices.

It is a religion that has falsely been labelled ‘devil worship’ by the Christian world for centuries due to deep ignorance. In many parts of North, Central and South America, it was banned and practitioners barred from practising their faith. It was practised in secret for hundreds of years. However, it is no longer banned and has seen a huge resurgence. In the United States, it is considered a genuine religion and the United States Government does not ban it in any way. No religious or secular leader in the United States or the free world may speak against Voodoo anymore. People are free to practise their spiritual path and worship in their own way because no one should judge another person’s spiritual path or their particular form of spirituality.

Tibetan Leadership

Lucky for many, the Tibetan leadership in-exile (based in North India) have no power over Voodoo, but they do ban other people’s religion that is different than their own belief system. They like to label people’s religion as ‘devil worship’ and encourage the crowd to attack and denigrate others. Dorje Shugden people have been banned, segregated, denigrated and attacked due to the lack of religious freedom within Tibetan exiled communities since 1996 when the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA or the Tibetan Government in-Exile) instigated the systematic abuse of people who choose to practice Dorje Shugden. The Tibetan leaders encourage followers of Dorje Shugden to be ignored, segregated and not included in mainstream Tibetan life in exile within India.

Whether the CTA believe the object of someone’s worship is a god or demon is not the point. The point is that people should have the freedom to practise without discrimination which leads to segregation. On the CTA’s official website, you will see ‘advice’ against Dorje Shugden and Dorje Shugden followers. Why advise anyone against another due to their religion? What official government website has a section condemning any religion? That is undemocratic and discriminatory. However, Tibetan leaders condemn the Dorje Shugden practice on a regular basis which equals to discrimination or encouraging segregation. They produce works, books and pamphlets in the thousands to stop Dorje Shugden practice, thereby creating so much disharmony within the Tibetan communities.

Tibetans should be able to worship and practise the religion they like without discrimination as well as anyone else. Discriminating against Dorje Shugden followers such as having a section of their website discouraging this practice and at the same time saying that everyone has the freedom to practise whatever they want is hypocritical. Advising against any religion and encouraging the segregation of those who refuse to give up their religion is pure discrimination. For sure, the CTA does all of this in order to have the public turn against Dorje Shugden practitioners. The attitude that their will must be obeyed is actually reminiscent of their archaic feudal system of governing from the past, something that is now cropping up in the 21st century. This shows they are not truly democratic which they like to purport to be.

The persecution against Dorje Shugden practitioners began in 1996 in the form of a ban against this 400-year-old practice. It continues to this day. I speak out about it because it is discriminatory, segregates people and is against the principle of freedom of worship without fear. I would not speak out and spend time talking about this if the discrimination was not real. The hatred and verbal violence against Dorje Shugden practitioners, even on social media such as Facebook, clearly reveals that so far the discriminatory propaganda against Shugden by Tibetan leaders has been effective. After all, it was the Tibetan leadership themselves who unleashed this discrimination against tens of thousands of Dorje Shugden practitioners after 400 years since the practice began.

The abysmal failure of the Tibetan leadership to secure any sort of independence and or autonomy for Tibet after 60 years in exile has deeply embarrassed them and highlighted their total political ineptness. So, they needed a scapegoat and this is Dorje Shugden. They said during the beginning of their ban back in 1996, that it is the worship of Dorje Shugden that creates disharmony among the various protector deities of Tibet and that is why we have not had a breakthrough on the Tibet issue. The official protector deities were ‘displeased’ with Dorje Shugden and so the practice needed to be abandoned. This was the main reason, but I know to educated people this sounds ridiculous. It is like saying the economic recession in the United States is due to God’s anger at Voodoo practice in the county and that it needs to be banned!

The Dorje Shugden practice has a lineage of 400 hundred years and many high lamas of the Sakya and Gelug traditions, as well as leading monasteries and lay practitioners in Tibet practiced this deity with great results. So why is this suddenly the cause of all of Tibet’s woes and misfortune? Whatever it may be, the CTA definitely discriminates against this religion and the people who follow it are segregated. The Tibetan leadership in-exile are not the Shangrila that it portrays itself to be, supposedly ruling fairly based on Buddhist and democratic principles. I am sorry, but that is the truth. The discrimination must stop.

Watch this short 02:54 minute video to learn more about Voodoo

People of various nationalities are finally able to practise the Voodoo faith without discrimination from the law. This is the way it should be. Voodoo was once banned by the Spanish overlords in South America, the French colonisers in the Caribbean, as well as in the United States for centuries. People were jailed, executed and segregated if caught practising this religion in the past. Thank goodness that in the democratic countries of the North, South and Central Americas of today, there is freedom to worship and Voodoo is openly practised without fear, segregation and retribution. This is truly religious freedom. The CTA in North India should learn from this.

None of the official websites of the governments of these countries have any writings against Voodoo or any religion for that matter. Remember that Voodoo was banned by the Spanish and French colonisers of Central and South America because they falsely deemed it to be ‘devil worship’. In the United States Voodoo faced the same situation and so did other faiths that were misunderstood. Such situations even spawned the Salem witch-hunts.

In this interesting clip, which is only 2:32 minutes long is from a documentary you will see a ‘joker’ spirit take trance of a tall man with a cape and top hat. To the ignorant, it may look malevolent but he is said to like and protect children.

It is not the right of any leader, either secular or spiritual, to condemn any religion and based on that condemnation segregate people like the Dorje Shugden people have been segregated. Dorje Shugden and Voodoo practices are not even remotely similar, but they both have the right to be followed freely without fear of retribution because there should be religious freedom.

I will continue to speak out about this peacefully because discrimination is wrong. All people deserve religious freedom without hatred, segregation and retribution for their choice of spirituality. Give peace a chance.

Central Tibetan Administration’s Website

Below is a screenshot of Tibet.net, which is the Tibetan leadership’s website. In it, they have a section with “information” about Dorje Shugden which is designed to promote hatred, negativity and direct vulgarities towards Shugden practitioners. What kind of democratic leadership has a section like this on their site targeting a religious group? Imagine the uproar there would be if the American or Canadian, or any other democratic government had sections like this on their site for the public!

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Website

This is a screenshot of DalaiLama.com which is the official website of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. When this section exists on His Holiness’ website, it actually emboldens Tibetans to discriminate against and segregate Shugden practitioners. This section is basically the Dalai Lama’s ‘endorsement’ of such behaviour; when anti-Shugden individuals see this, they think it is okay to segregate against the practice “because the Dalai Lama said so”. I don’t think the Dalai Lama would agree with this but the webmaster and shadow writers behind his website should not put this type of anti-Dorje Shugden section which subscribes to discrimination against a group because of religion. In the 21st century, this is not fitting of a great spiritual leader like His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Do not discriminate tolerate; is the way to go.

If the Dorje Shugden ban is just advice and not a ban, then why is a section like this necessary on any website?

Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile’s Resolution Stating Government Employees Should Not Rely on Dorje Shugden

In 1996, the Tibetan leadership passed a resolution stating that all departments (and ergo their employees) should not rely on Dorje Shugden (point 8). The resolution also stated that individuals who do engage in its worship will harm the Dalai Lama’s life and the so-called Tibetan cause. That being the case, how will anyone within the Tibetan settlements and government be able to openly engage in Dorje Shugden practice after that, if their worship has been widely labelled as anti-Dalai Lama, anti-CTA and treasonous? To openly practice after that will leave them open to criticism, vulgarities, harassment and discrimination, as Dorje Shugden practitioners have been for the last 20 years. So they will be left with three options: to give up the practice (which many will not do), to practice secretly, or to give up their jobs.

This is a screenshot of tibet.net, the Central Tibetan Administration’s official website, which shows the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile’s unanimous resolution dated 17 March 2014 naming Dorje Shugden practitioners as criminals in history (point 3, paragraph 2).

The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile passed a resolution on 17 March 2014 naming all Dorje Shugden practitioners as “criminals in history”. On what basis can the Tibetan leadership condemn all Dorje Shugden believers, including the elderly, infirm, young, and those not of Tibetan nationality, as criminals?

VIDEO: Dalai Lama bans Dorje Shugden practice
and expels monks

His Holiness the Dalai Lama was recorded in Drepung Monastery in 2008 clearly stating that those who refused to give up their Dorje Shugden practice should be expelled from the monasteries. His Holiness even said that if people found it difficult to fulfill this instruction, that they should say that the Dalai Lama told them to expel Dorje Shugden practitioners.

My question is this: if giving up Dorje Shugden practice is just advice, and it is up to us who we wish to rely on, then why are there such heavy repercussions for people who choose to keep the practice? As a result of His Holiness saying this, thousands of Shugden monks were expelled from the monasteries, and were forced to set up their own monasteries where they would be able to continue their Dorje Shugden practice.

VIDEO: Gaden Monastery Attacked

Since the inception of the Dorje Shugden ban 20 years ago, the CTA (Central Tibetan Administration) continues to organize a hateful campaign against Dorje Shugden practitioners. In doing so, the Tibetan leadership has gone against the very core teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on compassion and tolerance and thereby, misled the world over the nature of their activities. The Tibetan leadership pursues huge sponsorship and financial aid from the West in order to run its operations but they actually channel these funds towards campaigns that suppresses religious freedom within the Tibetan communities through various means to instigate violent suppression against Dorje Shugden practitioners.

This video footage shows clearly how Dorje Shugden practitioners have lived their lives in fear for the last 20 years due to the ban on Dorje Shugden. Although the Tibetan leadership and supporters have continued to use various violent and underhanded means to segregate and discriminate Dorje Shugden practitioners, the practitioners themselves have not fought back. Instead, they continue to uphold their peaceful reliance on their Dorje Shugden lineage lamas and especially the practices and teachings they have received in relations to the protector deity. The main part of the video was filmed in 2000 and it shows 3,000 lay and ordained Tibetans heading towards Gaden Shartse Monastery in South India in order to riot against a group of Dorje Shugden practitioners.

France 24 is a reputable news network based in France, known for their objective reporting style. They covered the Dorje Shugden issue extensively, surely a reflection of the seriousness of the issue for them to devote so much airtime to it. In their video, France 24 captured on film the discrimination against a Dorje Shugden monk.

VIDEO: Al Jazeera reports on the Dorje Shugden issue

Based in the Middle East, Al Jazeera was formed in response to the heavy influence of Western culture on the media. They are known to cover controversial topics that other news agencies may be reluctant to cover, and provide hard-hitting, objective coverage of current affairs.

Evidence of the Ban

Over the years, my students have collected evidence of the ban against Dorje Shugden. Personally, I find it quite disappointing and sad that they have been able to collect so much evidence because it just goes to show how widespread and pervasive this ban has become. As you can see below, notices banning Dorje Shugden practitioners can be found just about anywhere in the Tibetan settlements. Whether a Dorje Shugden person is trying to access healthcare or enter a restaurant, or try to buy something from a shop, they are banned everywhere and refused service. How is this just ‘advice’ when the repercussions of practising Dorje Shugden are so violent inside the Tibetan communities and settlements?

    Dear friends,

Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.

You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.

Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.

May you be safe, protected and blessed.

“The 4th Zhabdrung Rinpoche of Bhutan and Dorje Shugden” blog post which was published June 8, 2018 already has exactly at the moment 152,744 views!! Over 150k views!!! Amazing!! The views will keep growing as time elapses of course.

This indicates many Bhutanse and Buddhists around the world will now know that Dorje Shugden is connected to Bhutan and their Kagyu Lineage. Dorje Shugden was promoted by the highest lama of Bhutan namely the 4th Zhabdrung Rinpoche himself. So Dorje Shugden will help and protect anyone and is not sectarian as they accuse him to be. People in the Kagyu school of Buddhism also practised Dorje Shugden and Dorje Shugden assisted them lovingly. Dorje Shugden being an emanation of Manjushri will help anyone who calls upon him regardless of their background and religion.

Good job to our writers, researchers, editors, technical team, supporting team and Kechara people who promoted this blog post on social media. Now more will come to understand how pervasive Dorje Shugden is in all the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism although the Tibetan leadership in-exile tries to hide this truth. Thank you everyone for promoting Dorje Shugden to benefit many. We were all very harmonious before the unethical ban against Dorje Shugden practitioners. Since the inception of the ban in 1996, there has been no benefits and instead so much disharmony among Tibetan Buddhists around the world. Many hundreds have spoken up about this point where we want harmony back. There should never be a ban against any spiritual practice.

His Eminence Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche’s incarnation is in Lhasa visiting. He is visiting the 350-year-old Trode Khangsar chapel dedicated to Dorje Shugden. He is paying homage to the powerful statue of Dorje Shugden housed in this sacred chapel. Both the chapel and statue of Dorje Shugden were commissioned by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama. The Great 5th Dalai Lama also composed a prayer to be recited daily to Dorje Shugden.

Dagom Rinpoche’s previous lives were great masters, scholars and practitioners of Dorje Shugden. Now this new incarnation of Dagom Rinpoche is offering gold on the face of Dorje Shugden in homage and worship to this very sacred statue of Dorje Shugden housed in Lhasa for the last 350 years. This is a very traditional Tibetan method of paying homage to holy images, which is by offering gold with prayers.

The Tibetan leadership wrongly says if you practise Dorje Shugden you will take rebirth into the three lower realms. Hundreds of lamas from the Sakya, Kagyu and Gelugpa schools of Buddhism have practised Dorje Shugden and their incarnations returned. Many of the incarnations are recognised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself. So this shows if you practise Dorje Shugden, only benefits come and no harm will come. The very fact Dagom Rinpoche’s incarnation is back, is clear evidence that Dorje Shugden’s practice is beneficial.

May Dagom Rinpoche’s current incarnation live a very long life.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden

This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.

The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is in Dharamsala, which is broken into two parts. Upper Dharamsala is where the Dalai Lama’s palace is located with his audience room and main prayer hall. It is also the location of the Dialectics School, Gaden Shartse’s guesthouse, restaurants, tourist hotels and main tourist areas.

A short ride down takes you to the lower part of Dharamsala where the Tibetan government is located. It is the location of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Nechung monastery, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, the Tibetan arts centre…it’s all in one area. And the reason why it’s split into upper and lower Dharamsala is because the area is mountainous.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives was established by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government to preserve all the ancient texts – both secular and spiritual – of Tibet and in the process, translate them into various languages like English. This book, Overview of Buddhist Tantra, by Panchen Sonam Drakpa was one of the books translated into English. What’s very interesting is that the book very clearly says that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, one of the five main disciples of Lama Tsongkhapa. It also says that after that, he was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen.

So the book is basically saying that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, Panchen Sonam Drakpa and Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen – the three Drakpas – are of the same mindstream.

Now that’s very peculiar because if Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen’s previous life is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, the renowned composer of 45 volumes of Dharma texts, the abbot of three monasteries AND the 15th Gaden Tripa, the holder of Lama Tsongkhapa’s throne…if that’s the case, how can Panchen Sonam Drakpa take rebirth as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen and become an evil spirit and have a negative mind?

Prior to Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, he was Panchen Sonam Drakpa and before that, he was Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa. How can a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa reincarnate as the erudite master Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and then die and reincarnate as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen…and then Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, due to a bad and negative prayer, become the evil spirit Dorje Shugden? How is that possible? Logically, it’s not.

What’s incredible is that all of this was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives under the Dalai Lama’s guidance. They contradict themselves because on one hand, the Tibetan leaders say Dorje Shugden is an evil spirit. On the other hand they’re printing a book saying that Panchen Sonam Drakpa, whose later incarnation became Dorje Shugden, is of this illustrious mindstream.

So how can the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, which is under the auspices of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government, print the translation of a book composed by the previous incarnation of a so-called evil spirit? How can they then say in the book that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, and his next life was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen?

Prior to the Dorje Shugden ban and controversy, everyone in Tibet knew that Dorje Shugden is Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and that Panchen Sonam Drakpa is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. The three Drakpas, they are one mindstream emanating again and again to benefit other beings.

And as we all know, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen became Dorje Shugden so it totally doesn’t make sense to call him an evil spirit, then highlight all of his previous lives as erudite masters, and publish all of this information under their own library. So you can see the contradictions. You can read all of this for yourself in Overview of Buddhist Tantra, which was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives.

    OVERVIEW OF BUDDHIST TANTRA

GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE CLASSES OF TANTRA,
CAPTIVATING THE MINDS OF THE FORTUNATE ONES

    BY
    PANCHEN SONAM DRAGPA
    (Pan-chen bSod-nams grags-pa, 1478-1554)

    O Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel! (Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal!)
In the vast expanse of Your bodhi-mind,
The mind that the Buddhas have lauded for as many as
    one hundred times,
You have developed “merit” shining like the sun.
Through Your skill in learning, debate and writing,
As illuminating as one hundred thousand sun rays,
You have developed in You a complete knowledge of
    the entire sutras and tantras,
Resembling a garden of flowers in full bloom.
    The power of Your speech is like the sun;
The fame of your name has reached the three realms of
    this world.
O Sonam Dragpa, the teacher of teachers!
I bow down at your feet.

In the vast garden of Your great teachings,
The intelligent young people gather for
The ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission,’
Just as they are attracted to
The one hundred thousand types of nectar
Dripping from a flower of one hundred petals.
May I be able to experience
The taste of the secret tantra!

Panchen Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the holder of sutra and Vajrayana teachings, was a master whose outstanding learning and spiritual accomplishments are well known by all the learned ones in Tibet. His first incarnation came in the form of one of the five prestigious disciples of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) and became known as Vinaya Holder (Dulzin) Dragpa Gyaltsen (Gragspa rgyal-mtshan). Then came Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the author of the present text. The next was Nagri Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsen (mNga’-ris sPrul-sku Grags-pa rgyal-mtshan). In this way, a line of his incarnations, each with the Dragpa (gragspa) surname, followed successively.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was born in the 14th century in Tsetang (rTsed-thang) in the Lhoka (Lho-kha) region of Central Tibet. He entered the great seat of learning, Sera Thekchenling (Se-ra theg-chen-gling) monastic university, where he became the personal disciple of spiritual master Donyo Dangden (Dhon-yod dang-ldan) and His Holiness the Second Dalai Lama Gedun Gyatso (dGe-‘dun rgya-mtsho). Under them, he studied the entire teachings of sutra, tantra and their commentaries, and became known for his outstanding learning. He also received from them the empowerments, reading transmissions, guides and instructions of the entire body of spiritual training. On becoming the fully blessed one, the Dalai Lama appointed him the abbot of the Loseling (Blo-gsalgling) college, one of the four colleges of Drepung (‘Bras-dpung)- the most prestigious monastic university in Tibet before 1959, with over 10,000 monks on its register. He continued to be the abbot of this college for the next six years; and after him the tenure for each of his successors in this position was fixed for a period of six years, a rule that is followed even today.

He was then appointed the head of the Gelugpa (dGe-lugs-pa) order, the throne holder of Gaden (dGa’-ldan), thus becoming the 15th regent of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-khapa), the second Buddha. In his eulogy to him, Khedrub Gelek Pelsang (mKhas-grub dGe-legs dpal- bzang) says:

O Lama, the second successor of the Unsubduable One,
The regent of the Lord of Dharma,
    You are the one who made the virtuous qualities thrive;
You are the one who ascended to the golden throne uplifted
    by the fearless lions.
    May Your success thrive forever!

He continued to be the throne holder for the next seven years, during which time he promoted the spread of Lord Tsongkhapa’s (Tsong-kha-pa) precious teachings, the Gelug (dGe-lugs) tradition, across the land in all directions. He also paid special attention to the practice of monastic rules and the learning and meditation of Buddhism in the monasteries such as Sera (Se-ra), Drepung (‘Bras-spungs), Kyomolung (sKyo-mo-lung), Phagmo Chode (Phag-mo chos-sde), Nyeding (Nye-sdings), Ödna (’Od-sna) and Chöde Rinchen (Chos-sde rin-chen) etc. and improved them to a great extent. He taught the Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso (bSod-nams rGya-mtsho) as the latter’s spiritual master. It was from him that the Dalai Lama received the name Sonam (bSod-nams).

His contributions in the literary field are enormous; and, indeed, they are the most valuable of all his contributions. Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) has rightly said:

    Of all one’s deeds,
The ‘deeds of speech’ are the most valuable.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was a person with an extraordinary talent for teaching, debate and writing. In his colophon to Bu mey chi don zab don sel wey dron mey (dBu ma’i spyi don zab don gsal ba’i sgron me), he wrote:

In the field of teaching, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would outdo them in this field, Arya Asanga and his
    brother transmigrated into another realm.

In the field of debate, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would find out the areas they had contradicted and
that I would examine them and put forth my arguments,
the logician Dignaga (Digh-naga) and Dharmakirti tactfully
    bypassed me.

In the field of writing, I am [next to none!] [In my eyes,]
Arya-sura was just good at spreading the works, which
are like ‘disputes~ between an insect and a field.’

I am the learned man. Peerless in the field of teaching,
    debate and writing!

For some this passage might sound utterly nonsensical, but the most learned master of our age, the talented teacher, logician and writer, the late tutor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Yongdzin Trijang Dorjechang (Yongs-‘dzin Khri-byang rDorje-‘Chang), said: “Now, some people of our time, who consider themselves learned scholars, think that this is utter nonsense; but they are wrong.”

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) wrote over 45 volumes of books dealing with many different subjects, such as the commentaries on the sutras and tantras, the saddhana manuals of the tutelary deities, history, religious history and so forth. Among these, one that is very important for all who wish to learn and meditate on the path-of the practical aspect of Buddhism in general and that of Vajrayana in particular is the Leg shey gyu de chi nam par shagpa kelsang gi yi trod (Legs bshad rgyud sde spyi’i rnam par bzhag pa skal bzang gi yid ‘phrod). In this book, he has explained precisely how the four tantras differ from one another. He has also fully described the stages of the two spontaneous path practices of the Vajrayana tradition, dealing with the ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission’, thus interpreting without mistake the intention of Adhi-Buddha Vajradhara.

May the reprint of this text, which the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is publishing herewith, bring peace and happiness in this world!

A Daily Request for Wealth, Peace and Protection

    Composed by H.E. Tsem Rinpoche

In the heavens there are myriad manifestations of the divine. All those manifestations specifically show us different aspects of divinity in order to be of benefit to all living beings. All the rupakaya forms of the divine have compassion, skillful means and wisdom. We invoke upon them whether we are happy, sad, down, lost, fulfilled, confused, empty, and during the whole range of emotions we constantly experience due to an untrained mind.

Understanding our nature, Great Wisdom Being Dorje Shugden, therefore all the more so, please hold us close to your bosom as an only child to a parent.

Though the manifestations of the divine need no offerings and gifts from us, we offer you supreme Manjushri Dorje Shugden a libation of tea, incense and mantras, in order to ask you to bless us, to be a part of our lives, to abide in our dwellings and to give us signs, omens and portents of both good and bad. When the negative arises, quell them immediately. Please increase the positive for my weary and worn mind as I lay my hopes in you.

When difficulties, problems and confusion arise, we ask you, who is but the culmination of all that is powerful, holy and omniscient to bless myself, family, loved ones, environment and even my pets. May I see wisdom, find hope, and be at peace.

I request you, O Divine Bhagavān Dorje Shugden, who wears a round dome hat and the three robes of a saffroned bhikshu, who wields a sword of liberty, justice and wisdom and clutches a wish-fulfilling jewel, who rides on a supreme lion of subjugation of all that is negative, to fulfill my wishes. I understand my wishes may not be the best, so I surrender to your wisdom for the outcome though it may not be what I have in mind. Please bless myself and everyone that we may enter into the supreme city of liberation.

Great Bhagavān Dorje Shugden, I request you sincerely from my heart to be a part of my life, bless my home, and grant me wisdom, solace and comfort, that I might be of service to others without agenda, and that I may focus out onto others and not be fixated on myself, creating more problems for all that I hold dear.

Bless me to become kinder, wiser, more compassionate, tolerant and very forgiving to all those who hurt and love me. In order to become close to you, Dorje Shugden, we must surrender the banal. We must abandon fixed views, projections and rigidity. Lastly, in my final moment when I leave this plane of existence, only the positive actions I have done will matter as everything and everyone will be left behind. Let me realise this and act upon this now! At this crucial moment, please may I have a vision of yourself, the powerful and merciful Dorje Shugden, to take me to where I may course in the sky to continue my journey of spiritual waxing.

I offer you saffron-coloured tea and my faith to fulfill my prayers and gain siddhis. By reciting your mantra, may healing, peace, love, long life, protection and perfect view of sunyata arise.

Mantra of fulfillment, peace and wisdom:

    OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA

(It is good to recite this mantra daily as much as you like or your timing allows.)

I dedicate this supreme heartfelt prayer to the all-knowing Celestial and Supreme Protector Dorje Shugden, that I may quickly become a being of light, compassion, love and enlightenment.

In the emerald forest there lies magical beings and powerful entities of old. There are beautiful gentle creatures of the forest such as deers, rabbits, owls and so on. Faeries, little people, elves, dwarves, trolls and other magnificent worldly and other-worldly beings of mystical origins who nurture and look over the natural world call this place their home. These supernatural beings, who remain hidden to ordinary view and are rarely seen together, have gathered to herald the arrival of the World Peace Guardian Dorje Shugden within the ethereal realm. Paying homage to the divine king they welcome him, the supreme being whose body shines with the light of magnificence and abides in benevolent wisdom. He who has come from the pinnacle of the celestial dimensions, he has the dominion over men and gods. All beings in this and other worlds have gathered to pay homage and to receive blessings, abundance and counsel.

Shugden the divine king, at last has drawn near,
He offers a new life so clear,
With a silent prayer he offers the golden stair,
Sing praises, does the emerald forest all cheer.

COMPASSION at its best: His Holiness the Dalai Lama explained in Ladakh, 31 July 2018:

“Usually at the beginning of an empowerment there is a ritual to drive away interferences. But I no longer feel it’s consistent to regard some beings as evil forces. At the start of each day I cultivate altruism, but in the evening we say, ‘May the evil forces be driven away.’ There seems to be a contradiction here that I’m no longer keen to comply with. I’m not highly realized, but I have great confidence in the power of Bodhichitta.”

    Source: https://bit.ly/2wVsqSb

    ———————————————-

This latest statement by His Holiness the Dalai Lama is excellent. I fully believe in his compassion and I hope he will fully implement it.

All negative beings take rebirth with negative minds due to deep attachments. The attachments result in negative states of rebirth and angry minds that carry out harmful actions, like spirits or hungry ghosts who can be very bothersome because they are very angry as they died in the state of attachment in their former rebirths.

Indeed we need to generate compassion towards these beings, especially the formless type, as it would be the best remedy to stop their harm. We can recite mantras with love and bless them with it. While reciting prayers, we can meditate on them being at peace. When we generate compassion towards these harmful interferences of the formless type, many of them will calm down and stop their harm and even go away. Some of them, you can talk to them and subdue their harm and they will stop harming completely if they feel your love. That is how you can help them.

Many high masters of India and Tibet generated great compassion towards certain ghosts, spirits or interferers and subdued them in this manner and even made them into protectors of regions. I’ve witnessed this with one of my lamas where he subdued a female spirit that crossed over the Himalayas. After making the spirit promise it will not harm others, my lama gave the spirit a drink to seal the promise.

Since the Dalai Lama has manifested saying Dorje Shugden is negative (although many high lamas disagree), then he can apply this method to Dorje Shugden. He can ‘subdue’ Dorje Shugden by generating tremendous love, prayers and talking nice to Dorje Shugden who will be ‘subdued’. Then people are henceforth ‘free’ to practice Dorje Shugden without more discrimination, segregation and being called degrading names for practicing this protector.

Give peace a chance. His Holiness the Dalai Lama can generate great love towards Dorje Shugden and all the hundreds of thousands of Dorje Shugden practitioners that love the Dalai Lama and miss him like I do. May His Holiness the Dalai Lama bring peace and heal the rift with Dorje Shugden practitioners.

May His Holiness live very long and always be healthy,

Thank you for the article. It is indeed an eye-opener to know the history of voodoo religion and how they adapt and evolve to survive till this date.

It is amazing how strong those west African people are to go through what they have gone through and still able to defend their root culture and religion. It is sad to know how the whites had treated them but putting them down. However, society has evolved and we have religious freedom now and the voodoo religion has been accepted and no one can say anything about your religion unless you have broken the law.

Its just like how Dorje Shugden people are now. We are being oppressed just because we practice Dorje Shugden. There is absolutely no reason for them to ban our practice because we did not go against any law. With the religious freedom we have today, we should not be penalized based on our religion. However, Dorje Shugden people now are still facing severe discrimination in certain areas in Tibetan Settlements in India because they are not as democratic they claimed they were.

Tibetan Government declared themselves as being a democratic country; However, they do not follow the basic constitution of a democratic country which one of them is religious freedom. Instead of protecting their own ppl from harm, they put up a whole section of their official website to penalize Dorje Shugden practice. They even put up personal information on famous Dorje Shugden practitioners and made it similar to hit list where the public can see where they live and go create problems.

Now that after so many years of persecuting Voodoo religion, the west has finally evolved to have religious freedom. I hope that it will happen soon in the Tibetan community and Dorje Shugden practitioners can practice their religion freely.

For the first time available, Dorje Shugden and his entourage of 32 asssistants of his mandala.

Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.

Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-

    1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-

    – Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
    – Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
    – Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
    – Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
    – Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.

    2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.

    3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.

    4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.

    5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.

    6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.

    7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.

These sacred images are available on *Vajrasecrets. They are made of high quality alloy and are one of a kind. They are based on the lineage of His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche’s monastery, Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, Tibet. In fact, the iconography of these statues are based on detailed photographs taken by H. E. Tsem Rinpoche during a trip to Tashilhunpo’s protector chapel. These are based exactly as the 10th Panchen Lama’s personal collection.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama

Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.

After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.

The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.

His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.

Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.

Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.

The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

    Dear Kecharians and friends,

Last night, I gave a teaching to a group of people who were in Kechara Forest Retreat. I shared with them the correct way to pray for our loved ones and why we shouldn’t “demand” Dorje Shugden with fulfilling our wishes but let Dorje Shugden decide what is the best outcome. He has infinite Manjushri wisdom beyond our own and we should trust this wisdom. Sometimes what we pray for is not what should be fulfilled. Sometimes what we don’t want turns out to be the better result in the future.

I also shared with them about a beautiful monk, Tsawa Pulthok Rinpoche, who was jailed and badly tortured by the soldiers for 19 years, starting back in 1959 in Lhasa, and yet he has no anger towards his torturers. He was released and had resettled in Nepal where I met him. For the remainder of his life, he spent his time in meditation, retreats and pujas for the public until he passed. He was glowing, happy and very proud of the fact he was a student of His Holiness Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, which he told me when we met. He did full meditations on Vajra Yogini and short puja to Dorje Shugden daily in his small room in Kathmandu, Nepal where I had to honor to join in his prayers. He told me he was very happy to have his room to do his meditations, pujas and prayers openly. Whatever happened to him, he accepted as part of his karma and he spent much time in prison meditating and quietly teaching dharma to his other cellmates. He was very much respected in prison in Lhasa because he never showed anger, always meditated and consoled others, giving them great strength. He endured much hardship, torture and beatings but he never lost his monk vows. His full understanding of karma helped him not feel any anger or bitterness towards the soldiers. He told me that daily, he would meditate that the karma of others in prison would come to him. That all the torture and abuse he received was so others in prison did not have to suffer this. He said suffering for others was what kept him going and made him be able to endure the pain.

We are not bound by our experiences. We are bound by our choice. I also reminded those were present about the good person inside each and every one of us, and how we should not “bury” this good person with our excuses because the more excuses we give, the deeper this good person is buried and soon the layers of excuses will make it very difficult for us to find this good person. We are all beautiful good people and we should not let it get lost by lying, laziness, lack of integrity and procrastination. We all have a choice. If we have to make excuses, we should choose to make excuses to be a winner. When we win, we make ourselves happy and those around us happy.

The teaching session went well and it was spontaneous, and I requested the people who live and work in and around Kechara Forest Retreat for the talk. We had some good laughs to during the talk.

    Thank you,
    Tsem Rinpoche

‘If we trust in karma which exists, then there is no reason for anger’.

🙏🙏🙏Thank you Rinpoche and team for sharing.

Regardless whatever religious , everyone have a freedom to practice whichever they have affinity.

One shouldn’t label others belief as ” devil worshipped” when one do not understand deeply on other’s people culture and beliefs.

As long as their beliefs transform them to be good and maintain the ethical, we should respect.

May the ban be lifted up.

“If the Dalai Lama, if His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by Dorje Shugden, then we might as well not practice Buddhism anymore. If His Holiness the Dalai Lama can have his life shortened by a so-called evil spirit, any evil spirit, then can he be Avalokiteshvara? So on one hand you say, we say, I say, everybody says, he is Avalokiteshvara; on the other hand you’re saying that he can harmed by an evil spirit… Which one is it? Can he harmed by an evil spirit or is he Avalokiteshvara? Do you think Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Tara all take refuge in something else to protect themselves from Dorje Shugden? How illogical is that? How illogical of people to say His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by an evil spirit, any evil spirit or “Dorje Shugden” evil spirit. How is that possible?” – Tsem Tulku Rinpoche

Listening to the chanting of sacred words, melodies, mantras, sutras and prayers has a very powerful healing effect on our outer and inner environments. It clears the chakras, spiritual toxins, the paths where our ‘chi’ travels within our bodies for health as well as for clearing the mind. It is soothing and relaxing but at the same time invigorates us with positive energy. The sacred sounds invite positive beings to inhabit our environment, expels negative beings and brings the sound of growth to the land, animals, water and plants. Sacred chants bless all living beings on our land as well as inanimate objects. Do download and play while in traffic to relax, when you are about to sleep, during meditation, during stress or just anytime. Great to play for animals and children. Share with friends the blessing of a full Dorje Shugden puja performed at Kechara Forest Retreat by our puja department for the benefit of others. Tsem Rinpoche

Whether we practise voodoo, Satanism, Buddhism, witchcraft, Hinduism or Christianity, what matters is that we do not harm others and have respect for all. Religious freedom is a key ingredient to harmony and peace. It should be a given, especially in democratic countries.

Voodoo is now recognised as a religion in US and its practitioners are free to engage in this controversial practice. This is what democracy is all about. The Tibetan leadership should learn from US and lift the undemocratic ban on Shugden practice. The ban is actually doing more harm than good to this countryless government-in-exile. Why? Because:-
    1) Logically, why would anyone or any government want to support a government whose brand of democracy includes banning a religious practice and effectively oppressing its own people’s human rights?

    2) The Tibetan leadership has been flaming the Chinese government with infringement of Tibetans’ human rights but look at what are they doing to Shugdenpas. Isn’t banning Dorje Shugden also an infringement of Shugdenpas’ right to religious freedom?

    3) Making Dorje Shugden a scapegoat for the Tibetan leaderships’ failure to regain their country is not only illogical but also shows the world the type of leadership that they truly are. True leaders would acknowledge their mistakes and make amends. To blame their failures on a protector deity is not only archaic and illogical but flimsy, as if it is their last resort to save their reputation.

Fortunately, more people are finding out the truth about the Dorje Shugden ban. This political ploy to cover up their failures would not last very long as the three things that cannot be hidden are the sun, moon and truth.

Reading this article one cant help but feel that voodoo has to integrate into the Western beliefs of the colonisers, to be able to survive into the 21st century. Without compromising an incorporating the elements Judeo Christian beliefs, it would have been so difficult to preserve practices until today.

Just because has found science to be the newest religion, does not mean it invalidates other sciences of old, such ancient practices cannot live on if people did not derive some for of benefit from them. I think humans of all creed and status, are practical for the most part, if there is benefit I will keep on propagating the doctrine.

In the time when Western Powers like the British, French, Portugese and Spanish, Dutch dominated a lot of the world, they could use their faith and religion to dominate others who are remarkedly different from them . This is purely their justification and excuse to do what they did to the rest of the world.

Voodoo is an Afro-Caribbean religion where by their practices revolve around specific beliefs and a pantheon of Gods and Goddesses. These African Voodoo practice has been going on for many hundreds of years. It was once misunderstood. Some claimed as witchcraft but they are not and it is still practiced today. It was declared as a true religion where everyone can practices freely and worship as they like without discrimination.
Because of the Tibetan Leadership (CTA) political agenda and due to the differences from their own belief, they instituted the ban against Dorje Shugden practitioners. At this century everyone should given the freedom to choose what they believes and what to practise without discrimination.
Is heart breaking to read articles on the CTA’s official website of the ban which has indeed cause disharmony among the Tibetan communities. The Tibetan Leadership at one side said that everyone can have the freedom to practise but at one end they are against it. They are not truly democratic at all. Dorje Shugden practice is banned by the Tibetan leadership while the Voodoo was banned by European colonisers previously. As times goes by the authority accepted the voodoo practice. The CTA should followed the example of what actually a democratic country like by lifting the ban so as people can practice freely to what they want .
Its wonderful to know of the Voodoo’s practice from the videos.
May HH Dalai Lama please lift the ban soon to create a peaceful and harmonious communities .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

I agree that Dorje Shugden practice and Voodoo is a huge vast difference, definitely not to link together. However, the underlying issue of it being denied, ban or segregated is strong. We honour freedom of speech, shouldn’t freedom of religious practice be allowed too?

Voodoo was banned in early days for fear of the occult.. ignorant humans for fearing of the unknown created an uproar causing the ban. When you understand the practice deeper, or learn more about it, it is no different than any other religions.

Religion is there to connect us to a higher spiritual level, opening of our minds, giving us faith when we feel weak.. for Buddhists, it gives us comfort knowing when and where our rebirth will be. Hopefully out of Samsara.

By condemning, segregating or banning, and creating disharmony between peers.. it is far more sinful than the practice itself.

May the World understands what CTA is doing to Dorje Shugden practitioners, and may the practice of DS be freed.

Interesting to know that practicing Voodoo religion was also banned like Dorje Shugden . And very glad that Voodoo banned was finally lifted and practiioners was able to resume this practice. If this can happen then so can Dorje Shugden ban be lifted as we live in a democratic country and practice religious freedom. Thank you Rinpoche and blog team for this interesting article on Voodoo practice being banned 😆🙏

It is sad to hear from Rafael Ananda Vertuan that in Candomble faith, people in Brasil are persecuted also. They are segregated and also have prejudice against them. Same as the Dorje Shugden practitioners. Please read the comment attached that was left on my FB page.

It was interesting to learn about the Voodoo religion. There are definitely many similarities between what the Voodoo practitioners experienced previously and what the Dorje Shugden practitioners are experiencing now.

Although the practitioners suffered so much, they finally gain the right follow their religion of choice freely without fear of retribution because of governments who believe there should be religious freedom. The Tibetan leadership is an exception. However, they won’t be in power forever (or for long).

There’s hope that one day, Dorje Shugden practitioners will also gain the same freedom to practice freely as these Voodoo practitioners. The time should be very soon.

  32. Datuk May on Jul 8, 2018 at 11:08 am

Voodoo is a religion deeply misrepresented and by sheer discrimination been prohibited and made to impress on others that Voodoo is about “devil worship” and black magic. All spiritual negativities were associated to Voodoo. Voodoo was banned for a long time by authorities who wanted to control and enforce their will on communities of people who were subjected to slavery or at least captives of their land (the Indians in America is the case in point).

With the progress of time and political and humane changes, Voodoo is not longer banned nor prohibited by law. With such openness from governments, Voodoo is better understood and much of the fear of negativities and devil worship will be eradicated.

Many oppressed people will rejoice to read of the acceptance and revival of Voodoo.

What pops to my mind is the attitude of CTA, what is it that leaders of Tibetans are unable to see that the allegations against DORJE SHUGDEN have to date not able to hold any logical nor proven evidence. Why then the continuous discrimination and segregation of Dorje Shugden devotees.

From history, Voodoo was prohibited due to wish of control and oppression on people subjugating them to slavery.

Is that what CTA wants to do with Dorje Shugden worshippers whom CTA classifies as Devil worshippers and Criminals in History. What legal right does CTA have to so judge DS devotees. In common understanding, CTA is not even a legal entity and not represented in any world renowned organisations.

With progress of time, the illogical and illegal ban on DS is becoming more and more understood as undemocratic (although CTA claims to be democratic) and oppressive. This is the 21st century and not the feudalistic manner of government of old old non progressive Tibet.

Wow amazing video show how animals showing love for humans. Not only dogs, cat ,elephants , even other animals such as ducks, chickens and so forth. Animals have the capacity to express their love for us human too, and they have feelings as we do. Researchers has proven that some animals likely feel a full range of emotions which include fear, joy, happiness, shame, embarrassment, jealousy, rage, and anger as well. Watching the amazing videos tell us a thousand words. Some of those animals were very affectionate and showing surprising emotions which I never come across some of them. Truly amazing as my own furry doggie did the same.

Vertigo is a sensation of spinning dizziness. It is often associated on going spells of dizziness caused by problems in the inner ear or brain. Those people who suffered from vertigo may also experience nausea, loss of balance and server vomiting at times. Its really good that there is ways to solve it as medical treatment is very expensive unless the condition worsen in some cases. Performing the Epley Maneuver to treat BPPV vertigo can saves a lot of medical expenses. If it helps why not try this first.

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing another proof of how Dharma can help us when we pass away. All those stories about high lamas’ body not decaying after days or even years after their death. Such stories are meant to inspire us to practice Dharma as the results of it is right in front of us.

For many attained masters, their body will show miracles when they pass away. Some of them will not decay for days just like Drubthob Rinpoche. In Lama Tsongkhapa’s case, the hair and nail even grew. In some cases, the body will shrink into 1 cubic meter tall. There are cases that the body will transform into rainbow light and leave nothing behind after they pass away. All of these miracles show us the effectiveness of Dharma and how it can help us when we pass away.

These attained lamas have full control of their death and some of them have ascended to the Buddha’s pure land. They are just like normal human beings like us who put in the effort to practice Dharma until the day they pass away. They are the proof of Buddha’s teachings.

There are many nice outdoor Buddha statues all around the world. It is said that a big Buddha statue can calm the environment and pacify calamity of the area. For example, the Big Buddha in Lantau Island in Hong Kong was constructed because there used to be many natural disasters in that area.

To sponsor to construct a big Buddha statue is very meritorious. As long as the statue still stands, we will continue to collect merits even if we have passed away. We may not be able to afford to build a big statue ourselves but Tsem Rinpoche is giving us a lot of opportunities to get involved. In Kechara Forest Retreat, there are many big statues being installed, we should not miss the chance to make our contribution to collect merits.

There are still many nice Buddhist temples all around Korea, one of them is this temple called Gwaneumsa Temple, located in the beautiful Jeju Island. Gwaneumsa Temple is named after Gwanseeum-bosal (Kuan Yin, Bodhisattva of Compassion), it was destroyed in the 1700s but was restored in 1912 by a Buddhist nun called Anbongryeokwan. The temple is very well kept and the environment is very calm and serene. It is definitely worth visiting if you are in Jeju Island.

Do you know according to the Buddhist scriptures, it is mentioned that there are 80 different types of spirits. The spirits can exist in different dimensions, they travel at the speed of light. They also have some level of clairvoyance. Just like human beings, some spirits are harmful, some are harmless, some can be very helpful to us. Check out this video on a spirit called Bryn Athyn, see how it can travel to different dimensions and comes and goes as it likes.

Life is really simple. We are born with nothing so whatever we have will be gone and lost in the moment of death. All is left behind where memories will left behind. The strongest force in the universe is a human being living consistently with his identity. Always be ourselves, express ourselves, have faith in ourselves, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. The most important thing is to enjoy our life , making it more meaningful spending it wisely, do something worthwhile in our lives when we were healthy. It’s all that matters. Accept what we have and appreciate it. Life is short after all we will not know what happened next. I am glad to have come across Rinpoche ‘s blog learning and practicing Dharma a little by little a day to improve my knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism, most important to transform my mind, to do more Dharma work and so forth.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing .

Beautiful painting of Red Dzambala, White Mahakala, Gyenze, Yellow Yamantaka, Dorje Shugden and Namtose. In Tibetan Buddhism Red Dzambala is commonly regarded as a God of Wealth. My first time knowledge of a red Dzambala. I only came across Yellow Dzambala but not red. Red Dzambala will also grant us all success and maintain control over our finances.
Thank you Rinpoche for your clear teachings on it.

It is amazing to see a huge gold Buddha statue. And what is more interesting is that the gold layer was only discovered after so many years. Though I have not been to this temple but we are fortunate to get a chance to view the Buddha statue via this post. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article and the history.

Dorje Shugden’s practice is really powerful and his blessings will come very quickly if we pray to him sincerely. During the night, we are very susceptible to psychic attacks or spiritual disturbances because we are sleeping. Hence, for those who are frequently being disturbed from their good night sleep, they should do what is being advised in the article which is prayers and serkym to Dorje Shugden.

If His Holiness Zong Rinpoche is doing it to avoid disturbances at night, I am sure that it will more than enough for everybody to do it. On the plus side, it is a very simple and easy to do the practice without much requirement as well as time. It is a simple yet effective practice for us to do.

Everyone should engage in some form of protector practice to protect ourselves during the day and also night. We have alot of negative karma that we had collected in our past lives and they can ripen depending on the conditions. It is just like a time bomb for us. Hence, when we do protector practice, the compassionate protector will help to delay the ripening of our negative karma and allow us some time to generate enough merit to lessen the effect of the negative karma. That is why Tibetan Buddhism put alot of emphasis on protector practices as well.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Respected lamas of any devoted students will have two stupas for their remains. One stupa inside the ladrang of the lama and one stupa outside for the public to worship and do kora. By keeping the remains of the lama\'s previous lives in stupas, and making offerings, generates the merits for the current incarnation and future incarnations of the lama to be able to do more dharma work to benefit others.

Here is a beautiful indoor stupa to a lama in Tibet. It is up to the strength of the devotion of the students to create such stupas in respect and dedication of their lama\'s previous incarnation(s). TR

Kechara Saraswati Arts (KSA) offers a comprehensive statue and tsa tsa painting service. We are able to paint both the face and body, using traditional Tibetan techniques and materials.

KSA can transform a ‘bare’ or ‘raw’ object of art into a living masterpiece through a variety of painting techniques. There are several ‘finishes’ to choose from. Be it an ‘antique’ look, a fully-painted colourful finish or a simple ‘gold dusted look’, your imagination and heart’s wishes are fulfilled through KSA’s mastery and artistry in action.

Our team have learnt the techniques of traditional statue painting from the finest artists of India, Tibet and Nepal. Through months of intense training and practice, our talented artists have mastered the art of painting both peaceful and wrathful features.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
