Sponsor-A-Tree at KFR!

In the Buddhist tradition, it is extremely meritorious to make offerings to the Sangha, as it is the Sangha who compassionately shares with us the Dharma that helps us on our spiritual path. Tsem Rinpoche has said that the one way to check if Buddha Shakyamuni existed is to look at a monk’s robes. Sangha members spend their entire life learning the Dharma, learning from their Gurus, who learned the Dharma from their own Gurus, who learned the Dharma from their own Gurus… all the way to Buddha Shakyamuni.

In that sense, it is the Sangha members who are the lifeline of the Buddha’s teachings!

One such offering that we can offer in appreciation to our spiritual teacher, who embodies and teaches us the Buddha Dharma, is an offering of a wonderful environment. An environment for the Dharma to flourish and to be practiced at. Therefore, here at Kechara Forest Retreat, at the home of our beloved teacher and also to all spiritual aspirants, the Green Team proudly presents to you a meritorious way to beautify our retreat land by sponsoring a tree. After all, what’s a forest without lots and lots of beautiful trees!

Please feel free to read up on the short write-up below to find out the benefits of sponsoring a tree and how you can do so!

Our Kechara Forest Retreat team is always looking for ways to make our environment conducive for others to carry out their spiritual practice. May many great Dharma scholars and masters be born from our retreat center and keep our pure lineage alive for a long time.

Thank you!

Li Kim

PA to H.E. Tsem Rinpoche

CEO of Kechara Media and Publications

HOD of Kechara Forest Retreat Green Team

Buddhism emphasizes greatly on environmental protection, and the emphasis on the importance of keeping our environment green and lush is portrayed throughout the Buddha’s life. The Buddha was born in the Lumbini Garden, engaged spiritual practice in the forest, attained Enlightenment under the sacred Bodhi tree, began His first sermon in the Deer Park and even entered Nirvana between two Sal trees.

For the Sangha

Since Buddha’s time, the Buddha has preached to take loving care of animals, and that we should never harm the trees and grass, but instead regard them as our home where all sentient beings can abide in peace and harmony.

For the Sangha, creating the right and conducive environment for them to practice the Dharma is crucial. A conducive environment will hasten one’s spiritual path which will lead to the development of more learned and wise individuals to spread the wisdom of Dharma to all sentient beings.

For you

Offering beautiful things to the Buddha and Sangha is a well known and general practice that all Buddhists would engage in daily in order to collect merits. Beautifying the area where the Sangha lives is a meritorious way of offering a nice environment to the Sangha. The work of the green team in Kechara Forest Retreat is an offering of the 5 senses to the Sangha which are:

  • Offering of sound, the peaceful sound of the trees rustling.
  • Offering of sight, the beauty of the flowers and greens.
  • Offering of touch, the ground that the Sangha walk on, the leaves and the vegetables that can be harvested.
  • Offering of aroma, the sweet smell of nectar from the flowers, and the fresh air from the trees at dawn.
  • Offering of taste, the beautiful organic garden that produces fresh vegetables for the Sangha.

While all these offerings helps you to collect immeasurable merits for your spiritual growth, it also creates the causes for you to:

  • To receive and abide in an environment that is pleasing to one’s 5 senses.
  • For the Sangha to have a conducive environment to practice spirituality, thus it creates the causes for more Dharma teachers to arise.
  • To have a conducive environment yourself to practice spirituality

How do I adopt a tree?

Select what tree you wish to sponsor, make a good motivation and we will do the rest.

You can also opt to support the ongoing maintenance of our peaceful environment in Kechara Forest Retreat.

Be happy that you are creating a peaceful environment for the Sangha to live in and practice the Dharma. Rest assured that in your offering of a perfect environment to the Sangha, you are creating the causes for a lifetime of peace for yourself and all that you hold dear.

Greens are the best healing for the eyes, when we wake up with lots of greens, we’ll feel better and fresher.

Kechara Forest Retreat is a place for healing, it heals not only the physical body but also the mind, so when the place is planted full of greens, it will make the healing better. We must give what we can to materialize Kechara Forest Retreat and build it to it’s best, so the many more people in the future will be benefited.

A beautiful environment is very suitable for meditators or people who are on retreats and so forth. And of course a place away from the hustle and bustle of samsaric activities. KFR will be so so great by the time it is finished and many many sangha and practitioner come to visit and stay. And make this place a focus for spiritual activities in Malaysia.

    Hi Rinpoche,

Yes, it’s a good move to green our planet.

Just a suggestion – can we have “small amount” rather than “fix amount” donation?

Like a group of accumulative fund from small amount or “as you wish amount” and put them under the category of “anonymous”.

“We give because we care so any amount also a heartfelt move.”

This is particularly helpful to those who have financial limitations but would like to help in small ways.

    再美麗的風景,沒有真誠的笑容,總令人缺憾;
    再歡樂的場景,失卻自己的心,連笑聲也虛假。

    有陽光,有夢想,生活還有什麼不美好…
    尋尋覓覓,原來我們只想找回往日童真般的笑容。

    微笑,豁然之間,一切都活了!
    真心,所有的苦樂,才有意義!

  7. Jessica Yap on Jul 1, 2013 at 1:08 am

Such a wonderful opportunity for us to generate merits. Being at Kechara truly is a blessing. From Dana offering to monk’s robe offering and now tree offering too! So many ways to contribute to the growth of Dharma. You can choose whichever way you wish to support.

Thank you for the meritorious opportunities, Rinpoche!

  8. AdelineTan on Jun 29, 2013 at 1:28 am

This is a great campaign, by sponsoring trees and support the ‘Green care project’in Kechara forest retreat will collect not only lots of merits but also will create the causes for us to have conducive environment to practise spirituality and have peace for a life time. I hope more and more people will come forward to support this meritorious activities.

  9. Darren Kechara Paradise on Jun 27, 2013 at 8:24 pm

This is a great campaign, sponsors also get to collect merits. Will share this with everyone!

  10. Cliff on Jun 26, 2013 at 7:43 pm

Wow this is an excellent way to gain merits and also provide the necessary beautiful trees to make KFR look even better than it is now already! 🙂 not only that, you’ll also be creating a better future for our younger generations. Many of us don’t take care of animals and even those who do stop at just taking care of animals and not their environment, its very sad to see people littering in their own country when they complain about how smelly or dirty it is. We need to take care of our environment its the place that we live in and our future generations.

  11. Yee Mun on Jun 23, 2013 at 11:52 pm

Thank you to the Green Team for giving us such a good opportunity to gain merits.

In today’s world, trees were being sacrificed in exchange for development. And what do we get for cutting down trees? Pollution, landslide, global warming and many other life theedisaster.

Trees are essential to our world and offer wide benefits to our environment. Trees can provide us food, beautify our environment, control pollution as it absorb carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, cause rainfall, prevent floods and droughts, clean the soil and home to many animals.

The Green team has done a good job in planting trees, flowers, vegetables and vetivers. They are not only providing a conducive environment for our Lama to stay and work in, they are playing an important role to protect the environment

I hope many people will support this program, whether is for own merits or for the sake of our future, to live in a better world.

  12. Jay Jae on Jun 22, 2013 at 6:51 pm

Dharma and keeping green, what a wonderful project! In Kechara, there can never be a dull day as there is so much diversity coupled with the Dharma to help people. With this combination, the chemistry sparks as an amazing means to help people and create the awareness of the person who we are inside.

Greening the earth is no other than saving lives itself. We all know how much the world today is in need of greens in order to counter the existing pollution.., Do join us and in the leadership of Likheng, our Green Team’s heroine in making Kechara Forest Retreat a beautiful place to be.

  13. Julien Roth on Jun 21, 2013 at 4:03 pm

I think this is a good idea 🙂 people should be able to sponsor trees in such a wonderful place 🙂 I hope that many people do this and that KFR will become more beautiful with all of the trees that people have sponsored. Thank you for sharing Rinpoche, i hope many people come and see this.

  14. Jutika Lam on Jun 20, 2013 at 11:27 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,

What a great campaign to introduce the people who are new to Kechara and it’s 14 Departments.

It is really something for people who don’t really know much about all our other Offering Packages.

What is even better? The fact that there a few packages to choose from even the younger generations such as kids can save up to sponsor a small tree!

I think it’s also time for me to start saving to sponsor some trees as well.

    Thank you Rinpoche for sharing!

    Love
    Jutika

  15. edward ooi on Jun 20, 2013 at 11:12 pm

Dear Rinpoche, Wow! We can even sponsor trees at KFR now? That is way to cool! I promise that I’m going to sponsor a tree in another 2 months. I love trees, imagine if there’s no tree in this world what will happen? I think landslide will be the one to happen because there are nothing to hold the soil and the second one is every sentient beings will die of suffocation.

  16. Sean Wang on Jun 20, 2013 at 2:57 pm

This is a wonderful campaign. I hope that many will support it because there is a lot of barren areas around KFR. When there are more trees, it will not only be good for the environment but also good for the people staying at KFR as the scenery is more beautiful and the air is much cleaner.

By planting trees, we can prevent the landslides and floods that come with torrential rains during monsoon seasons.

  17. Grace Leu on Jun 19, 2013 at 6:30 pm

Thank you Rinpoche and Kechara Forest Retreat Green team for giving us a great opportunity to serve the Sangha community and collect merits for our future lives. This kind of opportunity is very rare and not common in else where. By sponsoring a tree, one can collect many kinds of merits and help to save the environment for a very long period.

  23. Patsy on Jun 16, 2013 at 4:14 pm

This is a great opportunity for us to collect merits and contribute towards a good cause. The Green Team has done such a wonderful job in maintaining and beautifying Kechara Forest Retreat spending hours and hours under the sun planting, weeding, watering to make sure that the plants grow well and the flowers bloom nicely.

Kechara Forest Retreat is home for our Guru and all spiritual aspirants; we should support this holy land in any way we can.

Imagine, you are saving the land and creating a conducive environment for all its inhabitants, humans, animals, insects, birds etc to live there safe and protected. Kechara Forest Retreat is sacred land and will benefit thousands of people in the future who will come here to find peace and solace. Some might even become enlightened in this place. Do create the causes and conditions for beneficial activities to materialise in this place. It is a great opportunity to collect merits.

  27. tenzin llhamo on Jun 13, 2013 at 11:10 pm

This is Great! Such a good way to sponsor. I find it wonderful that there are so many ways that we can sponsor such meritorious deeds. As this will be an ongoing project, there will also be maintenance involved therefore there will be funds needed. The Green team is currently doing such a great job at planting, maintaining, weeding, watering, etc under the hot sun everyday! Let us help them in any way we can!

  28. David Lai on Jun 13, 2013 at 6:54 pm

This is a wonderful campaign I do hope people will start to help out the fund-raising because there’s a lot of land and slopes that desperately need plants, both decorative and ground-holding plants. The plants are crucial in holding the loose soil together and that is very important because it rain a lot here in KFR, Bentong. The rain can be torrential especially during monsoon season and it is capable of causing cascades of soil and erosion down the slopes. That is particularly dangerous for structures that are perched on hillslopes or even those that are at the foothills. Supporting this campaign is not only beautifying the area but you are actually safeguarding it from landslides and such.

    Colombia undertaker launches ghostly census

The enterprising Betancur Funeral Home owner said he began the list a few weeks ago, sending “a team of four funeral parlour workers — properly attired in uniforms — to buildings” around Medellin, 245 kilometers (152 miles) northwest of the capital Bogota.

“They’ve reported back with 215 ghosts…. Our video and still cameras have captured 23,” he said with pride.

Bentong is a town located in the western part of the Pahang. It is one of the towns which for the gains from tin mining had attracted the prominent Bentong entrepreneurs to Bentong in the Pre -WW11 era.
Loke Yew has contributed greatly to the development of Bentong during tin mining era.We must not forget the contribution of these people even though they existed a century ago.Thank you for the interesting sharing of the early history and origin of Bentong town.

In 2006, a sculpture of coloured papercutting art – Jiangwa la ma Meixiang qi (Jiangwa leads the horse while Meixiang rides) stood at the newly built Xunyi County Central Cultural Square. This sculpture showcased the great artistic charm of the regional Xunyi style of papercutting. The handcrafted piece originated from a native rural woman, Ku Shulan, who was born and raised in Xunyi County.

Video games are electronic games played across a variety of different platforms like computers and smart phones. Some research questions I will consider are, ‘What makes video games violent?’, ‘If VVGs are harmful, to what extent are they harmful?’ and ‘Should VVGs face more or less rigorous regulations?’ One of my assumptions is that it is difficult to control variables in order to, with validity, link VVGs effects with harm to society. Another assumption is that the studies into VVGs will primarily focus on any negative influences rather than any positives.

I will argue that because of how widespread and deep rooted in pop culture VVGs have become, society will inevitably be affected in some way, and therefore some regulation should be strongly considered. Furthermore, we should cautiously approach regulating VVGs as this topic is known to be sensitive to conflicting parties such as parents and children. However, there is a large range of uncontrolled factors in many of the published research studies on VVGs, and it is difficult to generalise many of their conclusions, as harmful to society. Therefore I will argue for the importance of understanding context when we examine VVGs and their effects. My aim in this essay is to highlight some complexities of the arguments surrounding VVGs and attempt to give a broader picture, and educate against the polarising views of hostility and dismissal often shown towards these games.

This article will be looking at the issue of whether or not violent video games (VVGs) are harmful to society. Read more at http://bit.ly/2JdmUBk

Now in the European Union (EU), all cosmetic products that are tested on animals are banned! It hasn’t taken full effect, but it has been implemented. The previous ban that was implemented in 2009 to stop animal testing, was also re-enforced so that no animals are allowed to be used even if it is to test on complex health effects such as cancer.

I am very glad to hear this news… every year, millions of animals die and suffer for being used to test cosmetic products. It is terrible that for beauty, we support products that are tested on animals. There are newer technology that can test these cosmetics without the need of animals. The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) and the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) did a great job in pressuring the whole European Union to ban animal testing for cosmetics even at the risk of jeopardizing the cosmetic industry.

I hope that the ban on animal testing will be fully implemented to all countries and for the ban to not only cover cosmetics, but for many other products such as in the medical field.

Countries which are part of the EU are:

    Austria
    Belgium
    Bulgaria
    Cyprus
    Czech Republic
    Denmark
    Estonia
    Finland
    France
    Germany
    Greece

    Malta
    Netherlands
    Poland
    Portugal
    Romania
    Slovakia
    Slovenia
    Spain

Freedom and Jeff Freedom and I have been together 11 years this summer. She came in as a baby in 1998 with two broken wings. Her left wing doesn’t open all the way even after surgery, it was broken in 4 places. She’s my baby.

When Freedom came in she could not stand and both wings were broken. She was emaciated and covered in lice. We made the decision to give her a chance at life, so I took her to the vet’s office. From then on, I was always around her. We had her in a huge dog carrier with the top off, and it was loaded up with shredded newspaper for her to lay in. I used to sit and talk to her, urging her to live, to fight; and she would lay there looking at me with those big brown eyes. We also had to tube feed her for weeks.

This went on for 4-6 weeks, and by then she still couldn’t stand. It got to the point where the decision was made to euthanize her if she couldn’t stand in a week. You know you don’t want to cross that line between torture and rehab, and it looked like death was winning. She was going to be put down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in on that Thursday afternoon. I didn’t want to go to the center that Thursday, because I couldn’t bear the thought of her being euthanized; but I went anyway, and when I walked in everyone was grinning from ear to ear. I went immediately back to her cage; and there she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle. She was ready to live. I was just about in tears by then. That was a very good day.

Say NO to Elephant-RIDING, say NO to using elephants for human entertainment in Circuises or Tourisms . . .

Elephants that ”work” in Thailand and other tourist destinations have to go through a ritual called phajaan, or “crush”. It begins with the baby elephants (usually three to four years old) being taken from their mothers and placed in a small, wooden pen. To get them securely in the pen, these babies are beaten with bamboo, sticks with nails attached to the tip and bull hooks. Once in place, the crush lasts for roughly a week. During this time, they are beaten, bludgeoned, have hooks attached to their sensitive ears, and are deprived of food and water as well as sleep, all in the name of breaking ties with their mothers and becoming domesticated. While in the crush, through the infliction of pain, they learn how to accept riders, do circus tricks and paint. This is designed to break the animal’s spirit which it certainly achieves, often taking its sanity too.

Used for centuries to domesticate wild elephants, this torture training method is still accepted as the only viable training method for elephant handlers and is used in almost every elephant attraction in Thailand. And, once they have their souls stomped out, they are simply vessels entertaining people. They are chained. They don’t eat enough.

Like humans, elephants have the capability to form relationships and have emotions. But, not the elephants working for the tourists.

People who visit Thailand — and other countries with elephant tourism — don’t realize the damage they cause these elephants when they support trekking camps, go to circuses or buy the paintings done by these creatures. Without knowing, they send a clear message to the elephant tourism industry that shows they support the torture these animals go through early in their life, as well as the horrific conditions they live in as cogs in the tourism wheel. Please never support this horrible practice, never ride an elephant. (Andres Grijalva)

A female humpback whale had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

This is her story of giving gratitude.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Faralon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her… a very dangerous proposition.

One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.

They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.

When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, nudged them, and pushed gently, thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.

The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May you be so fortunate …

To be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.

And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us this documentary of the oracle. I know of people taking trance of local deities or gods in Taoist tradition but I didn’t know Tibetan Buddhism has specially trained people taking trance of Buddhas.

Since we cannot see or communicate with Buddhas directly, oracle becomes the best medium to connect us with Buddhas. The advice given by oracle who is taking trance of an enlightened being is definitely for our benefit as this is the motivation of a Buddha.

We are lucky to have Rinpoche who introduced to us the Dorje Shugden oracle. We can go to Kechara Forest Retreat to pay homage to Dorje Shugden oracle statue if we don’t have the merits to have an audience with the oracle in person.

After years of sweeping the issue under the rug and hoping no one would notice, the FDA has now finally admitted that chicken meat sold in the USA contains arsenic, a cancer-causing toxic chemical that’s fatal in high doses. But the real story is where this arsenic comes from:It’s added to the chicken feed on purpose!

Even worse, the FDA says its own research shows that the arsenic added to the chicken feed ends up in the chicken meat where it is consumed by humans. So for the last sixty years, American consumers who eat conventional chicken have been swallowing arsenic, a known cancer-causing chemical. (http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/local/burlington_county_times_news/fda-some-chicken-may-have-small-amount-of-arsenic/article_0ecc5758-91f7-11e0-a572-001a4bcf6878.html)

Until this new study, both the poultry industry and the FDA denied that arsenic fed to chickens ended up in their meat. The fairy-tale excuse story we’ve all been fed for sixty years is that “the arsenic is excreted in the chicken feces.” There’s no scientific basis for making such a claim… it’s just what the poultry industry wanted everybody to believe.

But now the evidence is so undeniable that the manufacturer of the chicken feed product known as Roxarsone has decided to pull the product off the shelves (http://www.grist.org/food-safety/2011-06-08-fda-admits-supermarket-chickens-test-positive-for-arsenic). And what’s the name of this manufacturer that has been putting arsenic in the chicken feed for all these years? Pfizer, of course — the very same company that makes vaccines containing chemical adjuvants that are injected into children.

Animals in the wild have to continually contend with the expansion of human civilization. Certain wild animals have learned to coexist and even thrive in urban settings, pigeons and raccoons being obvious examples.

Well, subway goers in Moscow are becoming familiar with stray dogs. These dogs have become accustomed to using the subway system as a means to travel across Moscow, even managing to catch a nap along the way. The dogs hop on in the morning and travel to the city center where they spend the day begging for scraps. At the end of the day they get back on the subway and travel to the suburbs where they sleep in relative safety.

The dogs have become experts at judging the length of time they need to stay on the train, and seem to work together to ensure that they exit the subway at the right stop.

Scientists believe this phenomenon began after the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s, and Russia’s new capitalists moved industrial complexes from the city center to the suburbs.

Dr Andrei Poiarkov, of the Moscow Ecology and Evolution Institute, said: “These complexes were used by homeless dogs as shelters, so the dogs had to move together with their houses. Because the best scavenging for food is in the city center, the dogs had to learn how to travel on the subway – to get to the center in the morning, then back home in the evening, just like people.”

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche makes offering of khata to Dorje Shugden.
Trijang Rinpoche never gave up his devotion to Dorje Shugden no matter how much Tibetan government in exile pressured him to give up. He stayed loyal inspiring so many of us.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
