Who are the WSPA?

May 22, 2011 | Views: 493

ike many people, I have been reading countless articles regarding the devastating earthquakes in Japan… one in particular caught my eye as it mentioned a group that was doing wonderful work rescuing animals.

This group is called the WSPA, and I had my students do some research to find out a little more about them. The results of their research is presented here, separated into 7 parts: “Who They Are”, “Main Objective”, “Where They Are”, “Main Activities”, “Recent Projects”, “Any Controversial Activities?” and “Others”.

They do amazing work around the world, helping animals through legislative changes… this method is highly effective, influential and respectable.

Do take a look at their profile below and tell me what you think about them.

Tsem Rinpoche

1. Who They Are

The WSPA or the World Society for the Protection of Animals are a non-profit animal welfare organization. The WSPA was founded in 1981, resulting from the merger of 2 animal welfare organizations – the World Federation for the Protection of Animals (WFPA) and the International Society for the Protection of Animals (ISPA).

2. Main Objective

They state on their website that their main objective is: to build a global animal welfare movement.

3. Where They Are

Their main office is in London. They also have offices in 13 different countries around the world: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Tanzania, Thailand, United States and United Kingdom.

They also have 900 member organizations (or member societies) in over 150 countries.

A Member Society is an independent animal welfare organization that is a part of WSPA’s global network. The WSPA Member Society Network is the largest international alliance of animal welfare organizations in the world.

The member societies in Malaysia are: Ipoh SPCA, SPCA Sarawak (SSPCA) and SPCA Selangor.

The high number of member societies that they have seems to tie in with their main objective. With a coordinated number of “bases” throughout the world, they can get to disasters fast, attend to emergency cases and affect global change.

These societies can be anything from large national organizations to small specialist groups. They all work on animal welfare issues, but under different areas of influence.

On the WSPA website, it says:

“In all aspects of its work, WSPA aims to collaborate with and support animal welfare groups through the WSPA Member Society Network. WSPA believes that the Network is an international force that governments and decision makers cannot fail to listen to, and this is helping to create a momentum of positive change for animals worldwide.”

~ FAQ section http://www.wspa-usa.org/aboutus/FAQ/default.aspx.

4. Main Activities

WSPA’s animal welfare programs include a mix of direct fieldwork, campaigning, education and training, and member society development. Their work around the world focuses primarily on the following issues:

1. Companion Animals

  • Stray Control
  • Working horses and donkeys
  • Veterinary clinics

2. Commercial Exploitation of Wildlife

  • Bear Bile Farming (Asia)
  • Bear Baiting (Pakistan)
  • Bear Dancing (India and Pakistan)
  • Commercial Whaling
  • Dolphins in entertainment

3. Emergency Disaster Relief

4. Farm Animal Welfare

5. Education

  • Concepts in Animal Welfare – for veterinary students
  • International Animal Welfare Education
  • Pet Respect

6. Legislation

  • The Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare

Source: http://www.wspa-international.org/wspaswork/default.aspx

5. Recent Projects

Their main recent activities include:

  • The rescue of 3 bears in Pakistan who were used for bear-baiting. WSPA had opened a bear sanctuary in Pakistan in 2010.
  • The withdrawal of plans to farm 8,100 cows intensively in England. WSPA UK launched its “Not in my Cuppa” campaign a year ago against the proposed changes in the direction of British dairy farming. These plans were withdrawn on Wednesday 16 February:. They have a video for Not-in-my-Cuppa too.

Here is a video on WSPA’s 2010 achievements. It’s a very good video, and it covers the main works that achievements for last year. This includes works in Haiti, Pakistan, South Korea etc.

Or view the video on the server at:
https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/WSPA-2010-Achievements-in-Animal-Welfare.mp4

6. Any controversial activities?

We have not found any controversial WSPA activities on the Internet. What we did find was something that was written on a forum, and we think that it sums up WSPA quite well:

They look like “PETA for reasonable people.” I might argue with some of what they say, but not on the grounds of inconsistency between their mission statement, their policies, and their “Subject Specific Policies.” They do not advocate violence, rather legislation and litigation. These are legitimate means of pursuing their goals.

Overall, as an environmentalist who is aware of the needs of science and medicine, but also aware of cruelty, I would say that they look pretty good to me. They look especially good compared to PETA, which not only engages in violence, but has been shown to have members who have serious ethical problems.

7. Others

  • They have consultative status at the United Nations and the Council of Europe. As an example, WSPA have written scientific reports on issues which were used in WHO conferences in Mexico.
  • They produce subtle and tasteful videos. This is a good video example, it is of the mass reindeer killings in Sweden/Finland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zqba2hyuzs
  • They do protests on dolphin slaughters and Icelandic whaling, but so far its peaceful.
  • One of their spokespersons is Leona Lewis, a British celebrity with a good reputation.

Amazing…what they did, its seem they have been helping animals by looking to their welfare as well., Their vision is a world where animal welfare matters and animal cruelty. They do amazing work around the world,…….and are creating awareness to everyone and every where in every countries. They helped to repair and installed equipment and launched campaign on disasters preparedness , providing aids to those in the disaster area, to stop bears hunting in South Korea and so forth. Love what they did to help those animals been suffered in the hands of entertainments exploitation .

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article. What the WSPA is doing for the animals is more than words can say. This organization is around the globe and their mission is to build a global animal welfare movement. From what I have read in this article, they are doing a good job to help, rescue and care for the animals where nobody will do. I wish them good luck and success in rescuing animals from being harm.

    With folded palms,
    Vivian

I am so glad to know that WSPA have been saving animals around the world, can’t believe I have not heard of them before until now. I really like what they are doing, they are sure of what they are doing and just go all the way with it. I am very happy that they are defending and saving beings who cannot talk.
    Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.
    Love, beatrix.

Thanks WSPA for saving so many lifes, and thanks Rinpoche for the sharing to let us know more about WSPA.

May WSPA can always grow to benefit more sentient beings.

  6. Wan Wai Meng on Aug 18, 2012 at 2:44 am

I am glad to know of WSPA and all the great work that they are doing. Hope more people become more aware of the plight of animals around the world.

  7. JP on Sep 17, 2011 at 3:23 am

I’ve never heard of WSPA. It looks like they are doing great work rescuing animals and promoting animal welfare without being political and thus creating more problems to our communities and diverting the focus to the cause. We need more non profit organisations like them to create a mass consciousness especially in Asia and to actually save animals.

Through more collaborations with other less established animal welfare organisations in Asia, the exchange of knowledge will result in saving more animals.

  8. wan on Sep 15, 2011 at 6:31 am

i’m glad to know and learn about WSPA and its activities which many animals will be safe and protect by them. Now a day people realize and focus about this more which is refer to their selflessness.

i wish people who abandon and hurt animal will realize in their harmful action and stop doing it which is the real cause of the problem..

  9. bengkooi on Sep 14, 2011 at 11:14 pm

I have not heard of the WSPA before this, but having read this article, I really like what I see. The standard of animal welfare in the west is quite good, but in the east, it is barely acceptable. A global animal welfare movement, like what the WSPA is trying to accomplish would greatly help in countries where animals are seen as being placed on this earth for humans to use, and without any rights of their own. I hope WSPA is able to change the situation, so that I no longer have to see or hear of government agencies putting strays to death in inhumane ways, or abominable pet care being accepted as the norm.

  10. Carmen Koo on Sep 14, 2011 at 6:34 pm

People who genuinely care about animals from their heart, and not on a face value, reflect a kind, compassionate, caring and loving soul for many people do not give any respect to animals. It is therefore rare to find a person who truly cares of animals and their rights, because like us, animals are living beings too – they breathe, they feel, they cry, they talk, they have families, they have consciousness. The only difference is the physical appearances, and the language.

It is very touching when organisations are set up solely for the benefit of animals. I salute the World Federation for the Protection of Animals (WFPA) for creating a movement on a global scale to protect, save, listen and care for animals whilst educating humans on humane and ethicals ways of treating animals. May Kechara Animal Sanctuary cause a wave of movement in Malaysia when it manifests and may it also be one of WSPA’s member organizations.

  11. Jessi Bryant on May 25, 2011 at 12:20 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

This is the first time I’ve heard of WSPA. I must say, I really like what I’m seeing. Personally, I agree with PETA’s causes. After watching the videos you share with us I even sympathize with some of their extreme methods of protest. It’s very hard for some us to see our fellow Earthlings suffer so greatly and not want to charge to the rescue without a second thought. Unfortunately the extreme behavior has also turned some people against the cause of animal rights. With their level headed approach to activism, the WSPA may even be able to get some of the pessimistic naysayers to change their turn and “fight the good fight”, so to speak, with the rest of us! Thanks for sharing. I’ll return the favor and post a link on my FB page.

    Sincerely,
    Jessi

On cold winter’s night in New York City, Tsem Rinpoche saw a homeless man and dog. Moved by his plight, Rinpoche bought warm food for the man and his dog, as well as gloves and other cold weather gear and personal care items. Rinpoche even gave the man his personal rosary beads, which Rinpoche has used to make many daily prayers. By by the person having it, it will bless him tremendously…

Some short videos do not need a lot of explanation. This is one of them.

This video and the people involved touched me to the core. People who go out of their way to make life better for another living being are the greatest minds to walk the earth. People who care and do their best to make a difference are people who are really using their human potential for something with meaning. People who actually do something.

Please watch this video and share with others. Why share? Because you care enough to create awareness which will lead to understanding and eradication of these types of unnecessary sufferings. It’s the least you and I can do is to create awareness.

Have compassion. Practice in life what you admire in conversation-compassion.

Well its truly a very effective practice and should be included in our daily sahdana. A effective way to purify our negative karma, which has accumulated over the years. With the proper practice and visualization we could transform what is negative and turning them into sublime offerings. It will then allow Dorje Shugden to help us further through the creation of conducive conditions for Dharma practice and the elimination of obstacles.
Thanks Rinpoche and Pastor David for this well explained sharing.

Beautiful pictures of H.E Zava Damdin Rinpoche, an erudite Mongolian Buddhist master conferring the initiation of Yamantaka and Dorje Shugden to a crowd of 10,000 people. He was recognised as the reincarnation of one of the greatest Buddhist masters, yogis, healers, scholars and mahasiddhas in Mongolia. A great scholar within the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, he wrote numerous volumes of philosophic writings which are still been used till today. Interesting read of a GREAT Lama.

Lama Thubten Phurbu is truly an incredible , respected Gelug high Lama with his incredible achievements and accomplishments. Having up hold the lineage of Tsongkhapa and the practice of Dorje Shugden . He has done so much speaking up on the ban on Dorje Shugden and has contributed many beneficial projects in Tibet and China. Lama Thubten Phurbu is outspoken about Dorje Shugden and spreading Shugden’s practice and Tsongkhapa’s lineage to as many as to the West, India and Nepal .
Lama Thubten Phurbu have done much more for the Tibetan people than the CTA have. He travels occasionally to give teachings to preserve these precious lineages for the future. While the CTA is opposing the Chinese and creating mistrust, Lama Thubten Phurbu is building trust with the Chinese government while at the same time upholding the greater welfare of all Tibetans. Wow… Lama Thubten Phurbu has even compiled many prayer texts for the benefits of all sentient beings. Interesting read.
    Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for the sharing, some people love to senses excitement through supernatural power. I have seen the video it scary because it is true from experience. When it come for movies it is interesting to understand how curious our mind works.

From my experiences I have realized that the feeling of terror is the special aspect, unexpected, suspense and the surprise. Usually horror movies often teach us how to protect, to overcome difficult situation, to control the fear, prayer and meditation. The smart and brave characters of a person can be seen with a lot of much struggle.

I enjoyed this article, it made me to recall some of my doubt and fear memories during my young days.

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this special rare Buddha with us. Enlightened beings are very compassionate to have manifested in various forms for various purposes for us to get blessings. This Buddha is manifested specifically for us to curb with our own laziness.

According to Rinpoche, laziness comes in various forms and not just the superficial laziness that we can easily identify. There are some form of laziness is much more ingrained in us and it may manifest into some other behaviours.

This afternoon, Tsem Rinpoche, Ladrang Liaison Pastor Loh Seng Piow, Beng Kooi, Fat Monk, and Monlam were in a fish shop in Cheras to look for some fishes for the Ladrang’s pond.

Rinpoche took the group for a meal in a restaurant nearby. While in the restaurant, Rinpoche saw many fishes in 2 crowded glass tanks, and Rinpoche couldn’t bear it as Rinpoche knew the fate of these fishes – they will take turn to be on dinner plates throughout the Chinese New Year period. The fishes were huge, about 8 or 9 inches long and all of them will be gone in a few days!

After some negotiation, Fat Monk convinced the restaurant owner to sell the fishes at a reduced price. The owner also gave us all their eels free, knowing that we bought the fishes to be liberated. We also took all the frogs in the restaurant. They were so kind that they told us to liberate the fishes fast and come back to pay later or the next day! They let us go without any payment! I think they were touched by Rinpoche’s act of kindness and reciprocated. No restaurant will let go of their fishes easily during this period as supply of fishes are scarce, and the festive season is the peak period to make maximum profit.

This is so horrible, the way how the horse is being slaughtered! It is not humane at all. Imagine the fear the horse has to go through before its last moment.

How can we still enjoy our meat dishes knowing how much pain the animals have to suffer? We use horses for horse racing when they are still young and strong. When they are older, we kill them for their meat. This is life but we are treating them like an object.

If we want a more peaceful world, less violence, we have to learn to generate compassion. One of the ways to develop our compassion is to stop eating meat because we don’t want animals to suffer. If we can afford and have time, we can also consider adopting animals from the shelters. As the demand for meat decreases, there will be less killing.

Chinese activists recently stood up to dog meat traders and rescued 900 dogs bound for slaughter for human consumption. Many of the dogs were clearly stolen family pets, even wearing tags and collars: Huskies, German Shepherds, Poodles and the like, many extremely ill and dying from the slave ship like conditions of the truck and cages. One woman found her lost Golden Retriever on the truck, but was told she could not take him home unless she paid off the trader. The activists were beaten and after a 50 hour standoff finally rescued all of the dogs. However, by that time some dogs had died and the activists were forced to bury them at the scene.

The ‘Ocean Drover’ is regarded by the live export industry as being one of the ‘best’ vessels on the water. But right now, animals confined within it are suffering and dying.

After breaking down four weeks ago, just days after leaving Australia, the ship has been travelling at a reduced speed – extending an already long and arduous journey for the 48,000 sheep and cattle on board. On Friday it was revealed that the Ocean Drover had to make an emergency stop near Djibouti, Africa, after running low on feed for the animals, and now the exporter has confirmed the mounting deaths on board – still days from their final destination. One can only imagine what the surviving animals are enduring.

The exporter has expressed dismay at not achieving their usual ‘success rate’ but this is an industry that judges ‘success’ by the number of animals still standing at the end of a voyage. Sheep suffer and die on every live export ship that leaves Australia and their deaths are considered just a routine part of doing business. The animals onboard the Ocean Drover may be beyond our help. But don’t let their suffering be in vain – your MP needs to hear their story. Please take 2 minutes to call your Federal Member TODAY to express your utter dismay at yet another live export tragedy.

Hummingbirds are easy to attract to a backyard garden, a cinch to keep well fed, and a joy to watch. These sparkling jewels of sum at mer are easy to love.

But if you don’t take proper care to provide healthy nectar and clean feeders, they’re also an easy bird to love to death.

Hummingbird feeders must be kept clean and free from mold and fungus, or the tiny hum-buzzers you so enjoy could develop a serious and deadly fungus infection. This infection causes the tongue to swell, making it impossible for the bird to feed.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

    2 yearss ago
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
