Are Vegetarians Smarter??

Apr 4, 2011 | Views: 1,377

Those who wish to not be involved in animal cruelties and who are vegetarians/vegans show greater empathy towards animal suffering. But if we think about it, it’s quite simple… if you saw someone crying from being bullied and you empathized with that person – you yourself wouldn’t become a bully. The same applies with animals. If you saw them crying just before getting slaughtered – you yourself wouldn’t be a meat eater.

When we feel a certain way, it may be possible that our brain functions in the corresponding way as well. For example, when we feel anger, certain parts of our brain are activated, and when we read the text that we’re reading now, another part of our brain is activated. But what about feeling empathy?

Studies have shown that the degree of empathy we feel towards animals and humans can be measured on a neurological level.

The main findings were:

1. Compared to omnivores, vegetarians and vegans showed “higher activation of empathy related brain areas (e.g. Anterior Cingular Cortex and left Inferior Frontal Gyrus)” when they observed scenes of BOTH animal and human suffering.

2. There are certain brain areas which only vegetarians and vegans seem to activate when they view pictures of suffering, particularly human suffering. Additional areas in the brain were particularly active when viewing photos of mutilation.

“These results suggest that empathy toward non conspecifics has different neural representation among individuals with different feeding habits, perhaps reflecting different motivational factors and beliefs.”

Besides the differentiating degrees of empathy, what about intelligence? Does it require higher intelligence to feel empathy? Does it require higher intelligence to understand that to stop the killing of animals, we have to remove ourselves from the equation…? Apparently, it does.

The article below describes a study done showing how vegetarians and vegans have higher IQs than meat-eaters!

“Among the British respondents in the National Child Development Study, those who are vegetarian at age 42 have significantly higher childhood general intelligence than those who are not vegetarian at age 42. Vegetarians have the mean childhood IQ of 109.1 whereas meat eaters have the mean childhood IQ of 100.9.  The difference is large and highly statistically significant.”
(Extracted from:
http://veglov.blogspot.com/2011/03/why-vegetarians-are-more-intelligent.html)

There was another study done in 1970, where 8170 men and women aged 30 years participated. The results were:

“Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher social class (both in childhood and currently), and to have attained higher academic or vocational qualifications, although these socioeconomic advantages were not reflected in their income. Higher IQ at age 10 years was associated with an increased likelihood of being vegetarian at age 30. IQ remained a statistically significant predictor of being vegetarian as an adult after adjustment for social class (both in childhood and currently), academic or vocational qualifications, and sex. Exclusion of those who said they were vegetarian but ate fish or chicken had little effect on the strength of this association.”

How interesting. Do take a look at the article below.

Why Vegetarians Are More Intelligent than Meat Eaters

Satoshi Kanazawa
Published on May 30, 2010

Another evolutionarily novel value is vegetarianism.  It is exceedingly unnatural for humans to be vegetarian.

Humans are naturally omnivorous.  We are evolutionarily designed to eat both animal meat and plants.  Anyone who eschewed animal protein and ate only vegetables in the ancestral environment, in the face of constant food scarcity and precariousness of its supply, was not likely to have survived long enough and stayed healthy enough to have left many offspring.  So such a person is not likely to have become our ancestors.  On the other hand, anyone who preferentially ate animal protein and fat in the ancestral environment would have been much more likely to live longer and stay healthier.  They are therefore much more likely to have become our ancestors.

Vegetarianism would therefore be an evolutionarily novel value and lifestyle, as well as a luxury of abundance.  The Hypothesis would predict that more intelligent individuals are more likely to choose to become a vegetarian than less intelligent individuals.

This indeed appears to be the case.  Among the British respondents in the National Child Development Study, those who are vegetarian at age 42 have significantly higher childhood general intelligence than those who are not vegetarian at age 42.  (Childhood general intelligence was measured with 11 different cognitive tests at three ages before 16.)  Vegetarians have the mean childhood IQ of 109.1 whereas meat eaters have the mean childhood IQ of 100.9.  The difference is large and highly statistically significant.

The relationship holds both among women and men separately.  Among women, vegetarians have the mean childhood IQ of 108.0 while meat eaters have the mean childhood IQ of 100.7.  Among men, vegetarians have the mean childhood IQ of 111.0 and meat eaters have the mean childhood IQ of 101.1, a 10-point difference!

The fact that the difference in childhood IQ between vegetarians and meat eaters is larger among men than among women makes sense in light of the historical division of labor between the sexes.  Throughout evolutionary history, men have traditionally hunted animals for their meat while women have traditionally gathered plant food.  So vegetarianism – a complete and total eschewal of animal meat – should be even more evolutionarily novel and unnatural for men than for women.  Women are 60% more likely to be vegetarians than men are (3.33% vs. 2.07%).

Childhood general intelligence has a significantly positive effect on the likelihood of vegetarianism at age 42, even net of a large number of social and demographic factors, such as sex, whether ever married, whether currently married, education, income, religion, religiosity, social class at birth, mother’s education, and father’s education, both in the full sample and among men and among women separately.  There appears very little doubt that more intelligent children are more likely to grow up to become vegetarian as adults in the United Kingdom.  One standard deviation (15 points) increase in childhood IQ increases the odds of adult vegetarianism by 37% among women and by 48% among men.

Interestingly, the strong association between childhood intelligence and adult vegetarianism is not replicated in the US.  Vegetarians in early adulthood do have significantly higher childhood intelligence in junior high and high school, but the difference is not large (101.5 vs. 99.3).  And it is only significant among women (101.4 vs. 98.5), not among men (101.7 vs. 100.1).  This is very strange given the historical division of labor noted above.  The significant effect of childhood intelligence on adult vegetarianism among Americans disappears entirely once mother’s or father’s education or religion is statistically controlled.

It is not at all clear to me why the difference in childhood intelligence between vegetarians and meat eaters is so much larger and stronger in the United Kingdom than in the United States.  Apart from the national differences between the UK and the US, the two samples also come from different generations.  The British NCDS respondents were all born in March 1958, whereas the American Add Health respondents were born between 1974 and 1983.  I am not sure if it is the national differences or generational differences, or something entirely different, that account for the observed difference in the association between childhood intelligence and adult vegetarianism.

Interesting research on vegetarian are smarter. 😎 It’s would be a wise move to change our diet and see the results. 😍 Thank you Rinpoche and blog team for this very interesting sharing🙏👍😀😎

Dear Rinpoche, that means I will become more and more smarter. HEHE! It’s really cool to be a vegetarian not only because I will become smarter, my body will become much more stronger and I will save more lives by being vegetarian. I wonder if more friends of mine will also become vegetarian if I share this to them? I sure hope so

  3. Paris on Mar 3, 2013 at 9:55 pm

hey this is really interesting but it does make a lot of sense. I think that as well as IQ, we must consider how much EQ factors in how “intelligent” someone is. It’s not point having a very high EQ but being completely insensitive to the people around you and a total bigot! So it does make sense that for someone to feel empathy, they must have a higher degree of ‘intelligence’ (if that’s the right term?) – awareness to others’ feelings, alertness and empathy to want to do something to stop any suffering and the wisdom to find ways to stop it.

  4. Jean Mei on Feb 23, 2013 at 5:54 pm

As a vegetarian, it is lovely to find out that vegetarians are more likely to be smarter!

Given the evidence above, I find that the only logical explanation is that those who are vegetarian are capable of higher thinking. They are broader-minded and can think on a deeper level.

Those who are more acceptable and open-minded are usually better at absorbing knowledge.

“The more you read, the more you know, the more you know, the faster you grow!”

From there, I can see how vegetarians are more intelligent.

I’m sure it helps that you don’t ingest hormones that animals are pumped with either!

  5. Sean Wang on Feb 15, 2013 at 1:22 am

The fact that they are clever enough to understand that animals are capable of having feelings and that animals are sentient beings proves that being vegetarian does make people smarter. This really makes me remember the days when my mother use to say, “Eat your vegetables so you can become smarter!” I just laughed a bit 😀

  6. Julien Roth on Jan 5, 2013 at 8:31 pm

Im so happy to know that being vegetarian helps you become smarter. Here again Rinpoche has showed us a benefit of being a vegetarian. Therefore, more people should become vegetarian. And i also think that another reason why people are smarter if they are vegetarians is because, if you are smart you would want to eat meat to kill animals. And you would also know that being a full time vegetarian has many different benefits. And therefore it is smarter to become a vegetarian. Thank you for sharing this with us Rinpoche.

  7. Sheryl KH (JB) on Jul 31, 2012 at 1:33 pm

It is interesting for me to read this blog, which says that intelligence is linked to choice of our diets, although it has been shown that no significant difference lies in the statistics found from US citizens.

It is not explained as to why smarter people tend to become vegetarians/vegans in later stage of their lives, I feel that it will be an interesting finding if any one can find out the causal links between these two seemingly unrelated topics.

Regardless, being vegetarians/vegans can make us healthier while being able to reduce sufferings on animals , perhaps these two aspects are more meaningful and valuable for our lives?

  8. Grace (KSJC) on Jun 28, 2012 at 12:19 am

If given a choice, definitely i want to be smarter-become vegetarian is my choice…

  9. Wan Wai Meng on Sep 19, 2011 at 1:25 pm

I think it is an intelligent choice when we choose to be vegetarian as the methane gas that comes from animals clearly is damaging to the environment. And I do agree with Yan Chatel as for people to be vegetarian it take mores effort to maintain such a lifestyle if one starts as an adult. But for a child who spent his whole life since young should be a breeze and less of a chore.

Given the information we have out there about how the animals bred for meat are pumped up with antibiotics, what intelligent and wise person will still choose meat? I do find that for people to have compassion and empathy one needs more intelligence to manifest those emotions out.

  10. Yan Chatel on Sep 19, 2011 at 11:28 am

For real, this is incomplete. It has been proven decades ago that the brain of a predator, which all are meat eaters, develop WAY more faster due to the necessity to overcome another animal’s intelligence to be able to defeat them and eat. I would be more impressed if those studies would have taken into account that the parents of such vegetarians children are more than often more sensitive about their surroundings and will do actually more thinking to be able to feed themselves in an proper way without meat. This is by my standards and most other following the Scientific Method to prove something, that this research is far from complete and would need, anthropologists, psychologists, dietitians, society architects and some others I can’t think about right now to fully understand the whole thing.

Definitely Buddha cannot be wrong if He had said we should abstain from meat and do not partake in meat during retreats.

It is not just to increase our intelligence but to enable all our 5 senses or faculties to be sharper. If Buddha is proven to be a scientist today surely what he said is a prevailing truth and what he had said about meat eating also make sense.

Thank you so much for this article. After joining Kechara full-time, Her life-changing decision started when she realize that she was really after a teacher who possesses complete wisdom and a mastery of the Dharma, which has the incontrovertible answers to life’s questions. In His Eminence, she had found such a quality.

She has also witnessed how His Eminence’s teachings changes people’s lives for the better and her experiences have thus deepened her faith even further. A believer in ‘sharing is caring’, it is this proverb which compels Abby to share His Eminence’s teachings to as many as she can, so that words of the Buddha will give relief to the suffering of their mind. Thank you.

Thank you for this article. It is true that Kechara Forest Retreat (KFR) primarily serves as a Tibetan Buddhist Retreat and Wellness centre that heals, nourishes and enlightens life naturally and spiritually.

Kechara Forest Retreat is also a heaven for rescued animals. Animals have a very special place in Rinpoche’s heart and every effort is made to care and provide for our furry and feathered friends wherever Rinpoche lives.

Thank you so much for this article. Its really refreshing to see a Tibetan MP speaking confidently about the realities faced by them in exile, with the intention of moving forward to a better future instead of being stuck in myriad divisive policies that have really harmed the Tibetan polity and harmony.

Tibetans have also been particularly divided over spiritual delineations such as the issue of the two Karmapas and the very damaging Dorje Shugden conflict. All these serve to place the Tibetan leadership in a bad light, something which Tenpa Yarphel clearly does not wish to see happen. Thank you.

Over the years many people of various informal settlements have been persecuted. Persecution is serious, targeted mistreatment of an individual because of who they are, or what they do, what they believe, or what people think they are, do, or believe. The Jewish were often criticized and persecuted throughout in Europe. They were subjected to progressively harsher persecution due to their race and religion. Reading the comparison to the discrimination against Dorje Shugden practitioners are quite similar traits to the Jewish even though they are world a parts. May everyone have religious freedom to choose and be respected by others. No one has the right to discriminate others due to their beliefs and faith.
May all forms of religious persecution and discrimination which include the Dorje Shugden ban against practitioners be lifted soon.

Miyolangsangma is the Tibetan Buddhist goddess who lives at the top of Chomolungma . Many climbers of Chomolungma beseech her favour at the traditional stupa in which a Buddhist monk prays for them and they go through certain ceremonies. Sherpas share a rather straightforward motivation: Mountaineering is their livelihood, and they do it to support their families. Miyolangsangma, also known as the “Goddess of Inexhaustible Giving.” The mountain is seem to be her palace and playground, and Sherpas view climbers and themselves as only partially welcome guests, all of them having arrived without invitation. It is this goddess’s power, one Sherpa Buddhist monk said, that has willingness delivered to the Sherpas for their effort guiding expeditions and foreign travellers, to climb to the peak of the world highest mountain.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Elena Khong Jean Ai for this wonderful article of the Tibetan Buddhist goddess which I first time coming across.

How to Bless Buddha Images Yourself

While there are traditional methods of blessing and consecrating statues, known as soongdroop and rabney, not everyone has the merit to live near a Dharma centre or monastery, or has access to these services. For this reason, Tsem Rinpoche has compassionately outlined three methods by which anyone can bless Buddha statues.

The “One God” Theory Comes from Greek Mythology documentary.

This is a very interesting documentary of how the one-god theory arose from ancients times. This theory was not the domain of established modern religions but were already existent in pre-modern or pagan religions. This video shows how the one god theory is not the exclusive rights of anyone but in fact was a gradual process taken from Pagan religions. So what we might pre-suppose as modern (non-paganistic) or exclusive of modern religions may not be the case. EXTREMELY INTERESTING.

Please watch this intriguing documentary. But do concentrate and contemplate. It will be helpful for your religious studies. The one god theory may not be all that it is what we are told.

Carlos Castaneda was an American New Age author and a scholar of anthropology — the study of human behaviour and societies. He wrote a series of popular books that described his training and magical experiences in Toltec Shamanism under the guidance of Don Juan Matus, a native Yaqui shaman who lived in Mexico.

Castaneda’s writings brought him fame as well as controversy. His proponents and critics would debate as to whether his writings were the results of authentic experiences or an overactive imagination. Yet, despite the controversy, his expressive and evocative writing as well as the mysticism that surrounded his persona inspired widespread appreciation for Native American culture and earned him the title of “Godfather of the New Age Movement.”

The Jewish people have been persecuted throughout recorded history, from their beginnings in the Middle East, through Europe during the Middle Ages, the Holocaust of the World Wars and into the modern era due to their race and religion. This persecution of a community has been sustained due to religious discrimination. We wanted to provide all of you with just a quick overview of what the Jewish people have been through. We hope you can learn from this, and understand the atrocities that religious persecution can lead to.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

    2 yearss ago
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Our food bank distribution activities throughout the #HariRaya week. Couldn\'t thank the volunteers and everyone from Tesco Malaysia and AEON Retail Malaysia for the great cooperation to help make sure everything is ok on the supplying side. Their professionalism is second to none and that enabled our team to collect and disseminate the food in an orderly manner. #KecharaFoodBank #foodbank #HungerKnowsNoBarriers #Perak #Volunteers - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen
