(UN)expected can save lives!!
A while back, a group of my students and I did a series of photo shoots around Kuala Lumpur that I had conceptualized. We intended on using the pictures for a new series of greeting cards. After all of the preparation, scouting for scenes, running around, talent gathering, photography sessions and sleepless nights… we finally looked through the pictures and thought, “These pictures turned out pretty good!!” We were honestly quite surprised with the outcome, and wanted to do more with them than just greeting cards.
So we brainstormed, and after a few hours of discussion we finally decided to produce a creative, edgy photo book in dedication towards Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK)!
The team worked for months on this project, and worked very hard to create such an intensely creative book. I’m so proud of the team behind this, not because the finished product looks incredible both on the inside and out… but because they each don’t have any background in book production, but they got together, work hard and produced a book of such high quality!
There were those on the team who expressed that their motivation was to, “produce this book for KSK’s clients. We want them to know that there are people out there who care for them, so we’re giving this our best and hopefully it will touch many other people who will then lend them a helping hand”.
Do check out the write up and sneak peek of the book that was provided by the creative team below!!

UN EXPECTED
Inspired by Tsem Rinpoche
The back of the book. It explains the motivation behind it all!
(Un)expected is a voice that speaks on behalf of those who are unwanted and abandoned in society, championing the right of every individual to receive universal compassion, despite our many differences. Inspired by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, we seek here to encourage the youth to traverse a positive path and make a meaningful difference to the world around them, by using a common platform that recognises their unique talents, skills and expression. Further, the timeless, inspirational quotes of wisdom from Rinpoche, peppered throughout this book empowers everyone of us to deal with the many unexpected and spontaneous experiences we encounter daily.
Artists, musicians, designers and fashionistas – more often labeled “the crazies”, “the creative” or “the rebels” – were invited to put this book together, in support of Kechara Soup Kitchen, whose mission is to alleviate hunger and urban poverty. This cause highlights a universal problem we face today, which commercial developments have failed to address or perhaps even ignored. Materially, societies the world over have grown substantially, but morally and ethically, we may still be lagging far behind. There are still huge inequalities in the rights and privileges enjoyed by desperate members of our community. (Un)expected hopes to bridge this gap and create a fairer, kinder and more encompassing community.
The voice of the youth and dynamic energies of new generations need to be called to action now. We invite them to join us in extending a sincere hand to those in need. At the end of the day, we all need to live together in harmony on this planet we call home and each of us are connected in one way or another. And so, taking one step at a time, with the right values and attitudes in place, we can perhaps get a little closer to making the world we live in a better place.
The collaboration with local fashion designers has already received press coverage on the style section of The Star!
(UN)expected is now available in all 5 Kechara Outlets
(Special mention: From beginning till the end of this book the following persons worked really hard and put in overtime to get it completed. Karen Chong, Chua Su Ming, JP Thong, Li Kim and Joy Kam. They persisted and continued through all the obstacles to bring it to it’s beautiful results. Getting a book together and publishing is by no means an easy task at all. I thank them very much with deep gratitude. Tsem Rinpoche)

The books and the pictures look stunning. They are simply amazing. It is wonderful that this book has been able to contribute so much back to society. If anyone buys this book, they are helping the homeless by feeding them, counselling them and helping them to find jobs. I rejoice.
The book and pictures really look amazing. The amount of sleepless nights just to have those pictures taken. Then the effort toiled into making this book a reality and to support the homeless and KSK. Even the short 30 sec video clip is funkily done. Very nice!
