Russia’s Soft Spot
Dear friends,
Kindness is a quality we all cherish, admire and respect. Kindness in action is even more admirable. Especially if it is towards someone or something you are not even connected with. You must see this short video of how Russian boat workers went out of their way to save this poor dog. It is absolutely heartwarming.

Looking at the picture in this post tells all. That Russian boat workers risking his life just wanted to save this poor dog. Extreme freezing cold weather , yet that fisherman did what he needed to do. The dog was rescued and brought back to the shore ,running happily with other dogs. Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring, truly inspiring. Let our hearts be stretched out in compassion toward others even they are animals, they are one us. Compassion conquered all.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring post.
We have to share more news about how humans and animals can live together in harmony and how we can extend our help to animals. This type of video is very inspirational and educational. Animals are not born to become an object of entertainment or food for humans. In many ways, animals help us to accomplish tasks that humans cannot do. For examples, cows are used to plow agricultural land, dogs are kept to guard the herds and home, etc. How can we be cruel to the animals for the services they provide us? They don’t ask for more but some love and care.
It is most touching to see this great act of humanity -a fisherman rescuing a dog , wading in icy water and pulling the floating piece of ice, on which the dog was standing, all the way to his fishing boat . He had risked his life to save a fellow being’s. So great was his kindness and compassion.A tough act to follow. It is inspiring. He took responsibility to save the dog’s life and he just went ahead to do it.
Though we all may not be able to rise up to the occasion under similar difficult circumstances, we all have ample opportunities to save lives around us. There are so many stray animals especially in urban centres .
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this inspiring and moving story on kindness.
In such extreme cold weather the fishermen risked their lives to save a doggie on ice bed, Wonderful to watch the video It shown us that a doggie is also human. They deserved to live too Everything got the right to live. It was such a happy ending. To serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others no matter in what circumstances.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.
Dear Rinpoche, I’m glad that the dog is okay and just like Jim Yeh said ‘my faith in humanity has grown even more’. Wouldn’t it be just amazing when one day every single person becomes vegetarian and live with animals together peacefully? I wish I could see that myself one day and maybe the aliens will decide to communicate with us (I have no idea how the ancient people communicated with aliens)
Kindness and compassion are the great voices within you that is saying you care even the object or subject is not connected with you in any way or any form. Quoted from Martin Luther King “Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” Thank you Rinpoche who has kindly shown us compassion, love and care.
Thank You for sharing such a wonderful post.
It is always so heartwarming to see others showering love, care and concern towards others. Not only caring for humans, but also extending their love to animals. With the extend of even risking their lives, it is even more commendable.
When we open up the newspaper we read about what is happening in the world which is full of lots of sad stories. Rinpoche never fail to post many heartwarming videos and stories to show us there’s unconditional loves and compassion around us. What a relief to see the mumu is now save.
Thank you Rinpoche for the beautiful sharing.
Thank you for the sharing Rinpoche. The Russian fisherman is indeed very kind to rescue the poor stranded dog on the piece of floating ice.The temperature must be below 0 Celsius, not many people would like to get wet under those circumstances.and not many people would do that for indeed anyone for the matter.
In the end after the dog was on the docks ,the dog did look back on the ship that rescue him almost like a gesture of appreciation.
Due to the weather in Russia they say Russian are rather cold people but some have very warm Hearts.
Without the man effort to swim down to the icy cold water, the dog will be left drifting in the iceberg and freeze to death. I can imagine the freezing feel that the man have to endure to swim in the icy cold water. Great hero.
I think everyone should learn from Rinpoche on how Rinpoche treats everyone and every animal Rinpoche comes across. Rinpoche would stop every time Rinpoche sees a stray dog by the road and feed them.. Rinpoche would always keep pet food at the back of the car for occasions like this.. Truly compassionate and inspiring!
I started bringing pet food with me during my KSK rounds to feed to stray dogs and cats just like Rinpoche. Every single sentient being deserves to be treated kindly.. =)
Thank you so much, Rinpoche..
What is being shown is truly a display of boundless compassion in action, as it is being originated towards someone to which the russian absolutely has no connection with and its’ an animal! Yet he went out of the way to save this miserable dog, which cannot even utter a word of thank you to him. Of course, in view of the continum of endless rebirths, they could have been brothers/sister together. Nevertheless, due to Karma and through thousands of accumulated lifetimes, wherever they are destined to meet now, Karma could have brought them together – a fate that no one can control or avoid! Om mani Padme hum.
It was so freezing cold and yet the fisherman went down to the sea to save the dog.
This makes me feel that we perhaps if every one of us do a simple kind deed everyday, we can altogether make our lives and surrounding very beautiful.
Haha what a poor little fellow, I wonder how it got stranded on a small little ice cap like that. Its incredible how that man had risked his life in the freezing water to save the poor little fellow and at the end of it the dog just joyfully walked of with its friends. Such a wonderful story. Thanks for sharing this video Rinpoche.
This is soooo sweet. Poor baby stuck in the ice like that. It must have been terrified. Interesting how it keep barking, literally calling out for help.
The waters are freezing. One can get hypothermia if not careful. The fisherman risked his life to save the poor dog. Well done!!!
It gives me renewed hope in humankind!
This is absolutely heartwarming and touching! Think of it how many of us will do this!! The actions make this world become beautiful… I love to see animals are well treated 🙂 Thank you Rinpoche for the lovely post 🙂
So heart-warming to know that the Russian risked his life to save another. It was a selfless act. Nice to know that in this present age where everyone is so busy with the happenings in their life can risk his own life to save another.
I feel so sorry for this dog. It must be so cold when it was just sitting there in the cold snow. And the best part is that the people that were on that boat that day did everything they could to save that poor dog. I am sure that that dog must have felt so happy when it was back on shore and reunited with its friends. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
I always loves to watch this kind of video, it warmth your heart for the day, we have been surrounded by too many selfish people who only focus on own benefit, there is enough of this type of people, now we need more people who knows the value of kind act.
Being kind doesn’t mean you don’t love yourself or neglecting yourself, it just mean that you found a better way to love yourself by loving and caring for others.
Give your kindness to others, because when you give, you will get.
The fisherman is so kind to even risk his life to save the dog. What he did is definitely incredible because he himself might got into trouble in order to save the dog, but he still go and just do it.
From what I observe, people who saves others life or who genuinely wants someone/animals to be happy/fine, he/she usually will just do it without thinking too much, giving excuses or justifications. They just do it. I think the reason behind is they do it not for themselves and they never think for themselves before they do things that necessary.
Thank you Rinpoche to share this touching video. This guy really brave that jump into cold water and rescue dog, not everyone can take this risk, may him healthy, long life and helping more peoples.
Poor dog if did not meet up the fisherman to rescue it, the outcome is death. every one can make the changes if we can practice to be kindness towards all being, including animals,it can make the difference.
Thanks to this kind hearted Russian fisherman who risked his life to save another life.Very touching and inspiring story to share with friends.Loving kindness in action to all sentien beings is very rewarding.
It shows that compassion can be anywhere. The sailors must live a harsh life fishing in such cold weather and yet they still value a life enough to clear that thick snow on the boat and sail it out to the dog. The water is absolutely freezing and yet the man jumped in to rescue the dog. If you listened, there are dogs on shore barking, probably alerting the humans and see how gathers to welcome their friend back. Very heart warming.
Watching the video on how the poor little woofer is rescued and also the video and article of Mr. Pak Mie, has restored my faith in mankind.
The sailor who jumped into the freezing cold water to save the woofer is a truly compassionate man.
It is very heartwarming to know that there are such kind and compassionate people in the world.
On behalf of the woofer that was rescued , thank you so very much Mr. Sailor!
What a beautiful message this shows of the preciousness of even one life, that people would go all out of their way to rescue a single dog… after all, wouldn’t we do this for another human? Then there really shouldn’t be any difference with a dog, or any other being. When we consider reincarnation, karma and the mind, any one of us could end up being that dog on the iceberg; and that dog could end up living a ‘better life’ than of us now. Given that, I think it is useful to then think about how we would each like to be treated in any particular situation or rebirth – because we could very well end up there! Our actions, thoughts and speech would then follow accordingly.
It is very touching and comforting to read of animals being rescued by kind people who risk their lives in order to save another being. The cold weather and icy water did not deter the Russian boat worker from rescuing the doggie. Very selfless and compassionate act of kindness by him.
Ah, Russia, the country famed on the internet for it’s *often exaggerated* toughness, actually has a soft spot. It is truly amazing how much these fisherman cared for animals as they went out to save the dog. A sad thing about this is that the men are still killing millions of lives by being fishermen. I believe that the dog was there so that they could get some good karma in this life which otherwise would have been a life full of bad karma due to their massacre of the fishes in the sea.
Thank you for sharing this video. Thank you so much, Rinpoche!
Love,
Sean

Always so inspiring to see animals can actually help and benefit us in so many ways. And trigger our inner compassion for all sentient beings. To have compassion and care not just for beings we find close to us spiritually and physically but also other beings, as throughout the ages and countless reincarnations we have had relationships with all those beings around us, some have helped us, some were our parents, partners and etc etc.
Salute for all the fisherman that put in their efforts to rescue the dog.
May they being bless by 3 jewels and always good health good fortune. Thanks Rinpoche for sharing this video…
This is truly amazing! The worker willing to risk his own life to save the doggie’s, we can rarely see things like that nowadays. Every sentient being is given an opportunity to be alive , we can’t give that up so easily even though it’s just an animal. I really admire the workers for their kindness.
Thank You for sharing such a wonderful post Rinpoche.
Love, beatrix.
I can see that it is super cold yet the man swam to save the freezing dog. Every time I see videos or read stories like this, I just feel super happy and uplifted! To know that there are so many people out there who are really kind and compassionate no matter what background nor religion!
this is so heartwarming even though it is in cold water, hahaha. but seriously i think that it is so good that this man risked his life to save another. i hope this man lives long and keeps his good heart.
Dear Rinpoche, I agree to what Rinpoche said. One of the Russian workers would actually risk his own life in order to save the dog from freezing to death by swimming in the freezing water. I wish that every human beings will do the same thing as the Russian worker did when the situation comes. Not to mention it he is very brave.
Thank you for yet another inspiring story which restores one’s faith in mankind. I had just read the story of this wonderful Muslim family who looks after stray dogs http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/current-affairs/the-honourable-mr-pak-mie.html and this story of the Russian risking his own life to save the stranded dog is yet another lovely story. If more and more people care for animals, it will be easier for them to care for other humans also, and then we will have world peace!
I am so glad to see this… it is heartwarming to know that there is still kindness in this world! That there is hope and that we have not all turned cold and that kindness with no agenda to another being still exist even though we are not sentimentally attached to the other. As humans it is our responsibility to care for others since we are the suppose to be the most “intelligent” species on this planet.
I think it is important for us to realise that we are all connected one way or another and we are all living sharing space in this one planet. To be arrogant to think lowly of another living being makes us just as low as them. We need to take this seriously because we are all living in one house called earth… and if we do not like to be alone, to feel hurt, to suffer, to feel pain, why would we think another would be okay with it?
I am glad to see that there are people who have enough kindness to go out of their way to help an animal in danger. And it didn’t look all that easy either to rescue the helpless dog but I guess when there is true compassion, nothing is too difficult. I wonder how many people would do that. Elsewhere, there are those who go out of their way to inflict harm on animals. Why is it that for some people, compassion is such a natural thing and for others, the idea of helping another is so totally foreign?
Despite the risks involved, these Russians went all the way to save that stranded dog. Truly courageous and compassionate! The World will become a better place to live if Earthlings live in total harmony and help take care of each other in times of need.
Thank You to these kind Russians for saving a precious life!
Poor doggy, how did it ended up there?
Lucky these kind people went through the cold waters to save the dog stranded, or else we all know that the dog will not survive to the next day if it was just left there. Good to know there are still kind people around that are willing to put aside their comfort just to save a being that can never repay his kindness.
This video reminded me of a few posts that Rinpoche has blogged about:
1) A deer stranded on ice was saved by two young boys:
http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/animals-vegetarianism/why-save-something-that-cannot-say-thanks.html
2) A dog saved by an Australian model!
http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/animals-vegetarianism/aussie-model-saves-dog-read.html
Truly touching to see to see people helping and loving animals unconditionally.
Thank goodness that the Russian boat workers were nearby to rescue the poor dog trapped on a piece of ice, adrift on the icy cold waters of the sea. These Russian boat workers with a big heart, went out of the way to help the poor dog, recognizing him as a being in great fear and suffering. The rescuer of the dog took great risk with his life. Such care and kindness are rare and ought to be applauded.
We should always draw inspiration from such stories , where the spark of human kindness that is in all of us , is kindled.
Cute mumu would freeze to death if not for the kind and selfless act of this Russian man who defied the freezing cold water to save the stranded mumu on the floating ice.
Bravo to this Russian man for this selfless action. True compassion has no expectation of reward, even a simple “thank you,” attached to it.
Thank you for sharing this video, Rinpoche.
Awww… The mumu is so cute and pitiful for being marooned on a floating block of ice. Thank god the Russian sailor was kind enough to brave the freezing cold to rescue him. Such acts of kindness is rare and often pass on unnoticed. Unsung heroes are what make our world move livable and kinder. Unfortunately like what Dato Ruby said, the world is full of bad and sad news of killing and manner of miserable news. This is indeed a nice change and good inspiration for all of us to be kind to each other and especially to be kind to animals because they are no one that will help and save them.
This video is very refreshing AND inspiring. Very often we wake up to horrifying stories reported in the newspapers and social media. But to know that there is still compassion and one would risk his own life to save another being who cannot say Thank You to him brings hope to another day shrouded with jealousy, anger, selfcentredness.
Russian Sailors did risk their life in the cold weather to save the dog, that’s really amazing, The video showed us Humanity, we should do this to every single beings.
Thank You Rinpoche for the touching video in morning.
Best Regards : Eric kksiow
