Farm Fresh Eggs?

Mar 23, 2011 | Views: 865

When we look at our own lives, we see lots of problems that we have. We don’t have enough money, we can’t go on holiday this year, our spouses are being difficult and our jobs are taking up too much of our precious time. These are things we really feel are problematic in our lives – the huge issues that cause many of us to experience great mental suffering.

Please watch the video posted here. It shows footage of the average life of a battery hen. The shed in the video contains 800,000 hens, held captive in small cages designed to cram ten hens into each cage. Each hen has to struggle and fight its way just to get some food and water and often, because of the cramped conditions, the hens contract infections and suffer the most intense pain, fear, terror and trauma.

In America alone, there are approximately 300 MILLION battery hens that have never seen the light of day, have never walked on the fresh ground outside and experience very little human interaction and zero veterinary attention. One of the few times they come into contact with humans is when they have completed their production period and are then taken to slaughter. Their sole purpose prior to death is to produce eggs constantly.

When we think of the suffering of animals and birds, we often think of them being killed for meat. However, suffering isn’t always closely followed by death. Battery hens are worked for many months producing farm eggs for our consumption. They produce these eggs in squalid conditions and are never free from extreme suffering from the moment of birth to the moment of death. Even those lucky to escape the cages suffer immensely. Often, they starve to death due to no food or water being on the shed floors. Other times, they will suffocate to death, falling out of the cages with their heads having been buried in the mounds of excrement that pile up over time.

To think of any being living under such horrific conditions is unimaginable – to actually watch it as it happens genuinely brings tears to your eyes. It’s especially heart-breaking to know that all this suffering happens in order that human beings can enjoy their eggs in the morning. When you think about it, it’s actually crazy and yet a lot of us still remain ignorant to the suffering of animals that occurs continuously simply to satisfy our own taste buds.

The cruelty from which battery hens suffer is mind-blowing. It’s an incredible shame that farm eggs continue to be purchased for our breakfast plates at the expense of the continuous torture of these birds. The sources from where our food comes should always be checked out as best as possible. As practitioners – or simply as good people – we should always avoid buying farm eggs and do all we can to highlight this immeasurable cruelty and suffering whenever possible.

Please watch the video. It will definitely provide you with food for your heart. It’s impossible to watch the process of a battery hen’s life and not feel that even the smallest of beings deserve the peace, happiness and freedoms that we as humans enjoy. Battery hens, like us, are sentient beings and they should never have to suffer like they do. No single being ever should.

Dear Rinpoche, I don’t believe what they said is true. Because many chicken egg farms do not take care of their own chickens. Like some animal shelters, they said that they would never put an animal into sleep. But in the end when there are too many animals they just did it anyways. I don’t want the animals being forced to be cramped In a small cage and they also don’t get proper medications. And that is why I don’t really like the animal shelters.

Is sympathy for the animals which support the lives of a few billion precious people overdone? Life has always and still is in the majority of areas of this wonderful and complex world, supported by MEAT! View this fact as one may, it is still a fact — without meat, millions would perish! Perhaps better that a few meat-producers, aka, chicken, fish, beef, hogs, might better be sacrificed as humanely as possible, than letting the majority of the population of this good Earth die terrible deaths from starvation!!! Note on the documentary TV programs, the way the tigers, lions, cheetahs, and other carnivore, obtain their daily meals! No supermarkets, no refrigerators, no money, no stoves, just FRESH MEAT to keep the normal animal world, which does support all of us, alive and growing ever heathier, hopefully! Not to demean sympathy for the poor mistreated animals which we consume, but to put into perspective the REALITY of life on Mother Earth! Good and kind thoughts are always admirable, and to be complimented, as long as REALITY is faced! Good work!

Thank you for sharing this horrible information about the life of battery hens. The people who mistreat these creatures are evil. This makes me want to eat less of these commercially produced eggs and only eat kampong eggs as they are harvested naturally.

  5. Felix Kong on May 13, 2013 at 5:38 pm

Now i’m just realize that behind the story of industry eggs is so sad. Why they can let all the hens suffering in a small cage and just only care about their profit . May all battery hens have a good reborn .

  6. edward ooi on May 13, 2013 at 12:26 am

Whenever my mum goes to the market, she would always buy kampung(village) egg. They said that kampung eggs are way healthier than the eggs from factories and kampung chickens are also healthier than the factory chickens because they are not cramped together, they can move around freely and some of them can fly.

  7. sarahyap on Feb 3, 2013 at 6:29 pm

That’s why I always take free ranch chicken eggs. The animal industry is just so cruel… any industry that involves using animals as profit revolves around animal cruelty, and it is almost illogical to deny that fact.

It don’t even have to be an industry that sells animal products or by products… it can even be animal trade such as puppy mills etc… all of these are just terrible ‘business’ to get involved in. Recently, my friend got to know about a dog from a puppy mill… she was about to be put down by the puppy mill owner because she is too old to produce any puppies. And the problem about this is that the dog is still healthy! Only a little old due to the excessive breeding she was put through in her life. Thank goodness the vets called in my friend and he saved her from that terrible fate.

People really can get heartless when it is to gain profit… how disappointing…

  8. Julien Roth on Jan 9, 2013 at 9:43 pm

I never knew that the chickens were treated like this. Now i don’t feel like eating eggs. I feel so bad for them, I wish i could do something for them. And what really shocked me when i watched the video, is that people just leave them to lay eggs. They don’t even take care of the hens well. They are left to die slowly. And they have to fight for food and water. This is just wrong. Why do people have to do this?

But what i was happy about in the video, is when the lady in the video comes to one hen and helps a chicken. That really warmed my heart. That is the kind of love people should show to the chickens. Not just like egg making machines. They are more than that, they are animals. They have feelings, and should not be treated this way. This has to stop.

    Dear Rinpoche

Driving home from the monastery today i pondered on eating eggs, i feel much like someone who here who posted that eggs are indeed chicks and i too appreciate your video. should all dairy be avoided?

  10. Jessi on Mar 28, 2011 at 11:50 pm

Thank you for posting this link Rinpoche. I’m very fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwestern part of the United States where it’s pretty easy to find local “free range” eggs (not to be confused with cage free). They’re more expensive but if I can help to support the good care and pleasant lives of these animals while feeding my family at the same time then it’s money well spent. I’m going to share this on FB now. 🙂

    • tsemtulku on Mar 29, 2011 at 12:54 pm

What a beautiful place to be, the Pacific Northwest. I would love to visit and do retreats there in the mountains…..TR

      • Jessi on Mar 30, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Oh you really should visit sometime! The international headquarters for the FPMT is in Portland, Oregon at Maitripa College. Of course the beauty of the area alone is enough of a reason to visit. Here in Vancouver I can see Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, and the Cascade Mountain Range. It rains from about November through to about May, so summer is the best season to visit. 🙂

  11. Roy Martinez on Mar 24, 2011 at 2:41 pm

Hmm… well… I am conflicted… Is eating eggs ok or not? I am a huge fan of eggs and if it’s wrong to eat eggs… I can give them up. I believe that no animal should be mistreated to satisfy a human’s palate which is why I get my eggs from my stepdad, he has like 10 to 15 chickens which all produce eggs but are treated like pets… with respect. On occasion we go outside to play with them and pet them. So I don’t see anything wrong with eating fresh eggs. The eggs aren’t fertilized so it’s not like it’s murder of an unborn chick. Thanks for the clarification!!! 🙂

PS I am currently celebrating my 1st day without meat hopefully I can keep it going!

  12. lewkwanleng on Mar 24, 2011 at 12:54 pm

I hereby declare no more eggs on my plate 🙂

  13. yoke fui on Mar 24, 2011 at 10:32 am

Thank you Rinpoche for showing us the videos.

Previously, when I ate meat I viewed it merely as FOOD. Now,I can’t help cringing at the sight of pig, fish & chicken carcasses when I do my weekly shopping for the family at the market. The videos really hit home that behind the “FOOD” we consume are the sufferings and pains of all the animals who
look for the same things as us, human.

  14. ysng on Mar 23, 2011 at 11:49 pm

Since becoming a “vegetarian”, all the previous attachment to meat has been misdirected to eating eggs instead. It was like, at least I still can have eggs. It’s so easy to be “vegetarian” now, because I have correct views. It ‘ll be easy cutting off eggs as well when my view is corrected.

Hens don’t lay eggs for us to eat them. Hens lay eggs to have chicks.

    • tsemtulku on Mar 24, 2011 at 9:44 am

Dear Ysng, When I gave up meat, I misdirected myself to eating eggs too. Funny. I thought I was the only one..thanks for sharing..LOL. TR

Rinpoche, I do appreciate Rinpoche sending me the link to this video and horrible as it is, I took it as practice to watch it the whole way through and not close the window or close my eyes. It doesn’t make sense to close our eyes from these things as if they would go away or not happen when we don’t see it. I’m trying to work on a vegan diet now.

These videos have also made me so much more aware of just how much emphasis we place on just our tastebuds – one sense out of so many. How much effort, time, money we invest and how much suffering we inflict on others just to please our tastebuds!

I remember Rinpoche gave us a very powerful practice to do once which was to willingly eat food we dislike or bland food, in dedication of all those beings who have to suffer for our food or to beings in the world who will never have that “luxury” of all these sense pleasures.

I remember too, Rinpoche telling us a startling (but amazing, to me) truth which is that there is actually nothing in samsara we have not tried, no food we have not eaten. Whatever it is, basically it is still meat/vegetables/eggs or whatever just cooked in different ways. We are kidding ourselves to think that we’re trying something new – it’s actually all the same. Sure puts things into perspective. Thank you.

  16. VC on Mar 23, 2011 at 5:17 pm

what you said is true.we should be vegetarian or at least cut down meat step by step.but i wonder if all the animal in the world not slaughter by human.it would outgrow its population on earth and the earth full of animal and this would definitely give big problems to human on the other hand.where do you want to place the animal to live since there will not be any empty place on earth for them.

  17. Lim Han Nee on Mar 23, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for this post.

It makes me more determined to eat only eggs from hens that are reared in the kampongs here. I believe they are the equivalent of ‘free range’ eggs in the US and European countries.

The following words from the show “Earthlings” keep coming back to me. “The systematic torture of animals show the lowest level of debasement that Man can reach”.What I see in this video is yet another instance of Man’s systematic and mindless torture of animals.

    • tsemtulku on Mar 23, 2011 at 2:31 pm

Dear Mdm Lim Han Nee, Your comment here fulfills the purpose of why I post all these videos. Thank you for taking instant action without justifications and unnecessary ramifications. TR

    • Paris on Mar 23, 2011 at 7:09 pm

I was also advised however, that kampung eggs may be “worse” as those eggs may stand a higher chance of being fertilised and therefore contain a life within them.

I’m trying to figure out how to rear my own hens!

      (or just not eat eggs)

  18. Steve Tobias on Mar 23, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Rinpoche thank you, I learned about this earlier today, my friend’s vegan girlfriend posted a link. I always bought “Cage Free” eggs thinking the chickens were treated better, then I read this: http://learnshareact.com/mygreenblog/2009/04/06/the-truth-about-cage-free-eggs/

Even “Cage Free” hens are stuck in the dark all day, their beaks cut off, with low quality food. Apparently it’s best to buy “Free Range” or “Pastured” eggs. In Massachusetts in the US we have them but not sure about other places. Thanks.

Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .

The Pemayangtse Monastery is a Buddhist monastery, near Pelling in the northeastern Sikkim. The monastery is about 375 year old and is one of the oldest and premier monasteries of Sikkim. Its also the most famous monastery in Sikkim and one of the most important monastery belonging to the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism. Pemayangtse monastery was founded around 1647-48 recording to history. Well the Monastery is part of Buddhist religious pilgrimage circuit built with scenic backdrop of snow-capped mountains on two sides. Where many locals and tourists will travel to Sikkim yearly . Over the centuries, the monastery has withstood earthquakes and has gone through series of refurbishments and preservation efforts. Interesting story behind this monastery, would love to travel to Sikkim again .
Lieutenant Colonel Laurence Austine Waddell was a British explorer, collector in Tibet, and author, travelling throughout India,Sikkim and areas on the borders of Nepal and Tibet. He wrote about the Tibetan Buddhist religious practices from what he observed while there. In Sikkim he made a stunning discovery, that Dorje Shugden existence in the Nyingma monastery as written in his book. Hence it has proven that Dorje Shugden been worshipped not only in Gelug lineage but as well in the Nyingma centuries ago too. Its not a minority practice afterall .

Revisit this interesting post of a great Master
Buton Rinchen Drup, was a 14th-century Sakya master and Tibetan Buddhist leader. He is widely considered to be one of Tibet’s greatest scholars, historians, translators, and writers. He has been the role model for many of Tibet’s greatest masters over the centuries, including the present Dalai Lama. His legacy also included the compilation of 500 years’ worth of translated teachings into the encyclopedic Kangyur and Tangyur collections. This monumental effort helped to preserve and propagate the teachings throughout Tibet. These collections have become well known by all of the schools of Buddhism in Tibet, and continue to this day. He truly was one of the brightest lights of Tibetan Buddhism.
Throughout his life, Buton Rinchen Drup has continued to serve humanity and the Dharma. Interesting read.

Toyuq, located 50 km east of Turpan a unique city in the Flaming Mountains. From all sides the city is surrounded by deserts and mountains, destroyed medieval towns and ruins of ancient settlements. Toyuq, an Islamic pilgrimage center, nestles at the base of the Flaming Mountains. Here there are many mosques, both medieval and modern ones been built over the years. The first Uighur ruler had converted to Islam, and shrines was then built in the locality honouring the ruler. There was a story behind the legendary Seven Sleepers of Ephesus where there was a group of youths hiding inside a cave, at the Flaming mountains outside the city of Ephesus around 250 AD. Buildings can be seen practically everywhere with pierced walls that is used for drying grapes to make raisins. Raisins and melons are most known products of the region. Turpan is one of the most densely populated cities in Xinjiang the popukation consists of mainly the Muslim Uyghurs.

The Fourth Takpu, Pema Vajra Jampel Tenpai Ngodrub was a highly attained lama. He was also commonly known as Takpu Dorje Chang who had many authentic visions of the Buddhas. He had even received directly teachings from Buddhas. He had received direct visions of Tara herself. Tagpu Pemavajra had travelled to Tushita, the heavenly abode of Lama Tsongkhapa as requested by Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche where he received the complete cycle of teachings on Dorje Shugden. Tagpu Pemavajra was one such lama who was attained enough to receive these teachings for the benefit of others. He was instrumental in the development of the Dorje Shugden practice within the Gelug tradition. Wow he was able to astral travel to various pure lands and receive special teachings. Interesting biography of a great lama.

Amazing discovery a 2,000 year old Indian Buddhist document as it tell us how Buddhism took root in India. It’s the oldest Buddhist manuscripts yet discovered, dating from about the 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. Found in the north-western outskirts of the Indian subcontinent an ancient Buddhist kindgom. The document, written on a birch bark scroll offers rare insight into the early history of Buddhism. Surviving manuscripts are rare only a few hundred are known to still exist. Understanding the history of the region helps us realize the significance of this scroll.

Visited this stunning standing Manjushri which is located at the Manjushree Park at Chobhar, in Kathmandu, Nepal recently. Feeling so blessed able to see it , with my friends. Manjushree Park, one of most natural, historic attactive park within Kathmandu valley. Fantastic well managed picnic spot one should visit and not to be missed when one is at Kathmandu Nepal. Visible 33 ft. high black stone carved Manjushree statue .Manjushri is one of the most important iconic figures in Mahayana Buddhism. The powerful image representing ever-present wisdom plus the sword of awareness to cut off all delusion. An interesting story behind this Kathmandu Valley where mythology and geology intertwine.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting sharing .

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

One the day of Losar (new lunar year), it is always beneficial for Buddhist practitioners to get together in making abundant offerings to Buddhas on the altar to usher in goodness, prosperity and well-being of our loved ones. It's more auspicious this year as Losar and the Chinese New Year begin on the same date, 10th Feb, 2024. Back in Penang, our Kechara members came together to decorate the altar with abundance offerings for Dorje Shugden puja @3pm. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Umze for the day was Siew Hong. She's just been with us for slightly more than a year now but she's proven her capability in leading the puja. Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. When she leads, make sure you are there to hear her chant for yourself! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
