In life, everyone wants to be happy. However, most people are habituated to look for happiness in the wrong objects and in the wrong places. Unfortunately, society reinforces these same mistaken objects and sources as the norms. Society expects us to pursue happiness in partnerships, relationships, in getting married and having a family, and in having a successful job and getting lots of money. These norms of happiness are pursued mindlessly and then, all too often, the pursuit grinds to a halt, with unexpected illness and then death. At the end of the road of life we will inevitably meet death, no matter how we push out all thoughts of it from our minds and persist in denying it.

There is generally no room for spirituality in our pursuit of happiness, as this pursuit is all about ME and MY happiness. Soon enough, instead of finding the happiness we have been seeking, deep-seated negative emotions and mental diseases pervade our minds and destroy our peace. Anger, loneliness and depression pull us down; some people even spiral all the way downwards towards suicide.

UNExpected, a book compiled by the creative team of JP Thong and Joy Kam, voices the need for adding spirituality to our lives, while continuing to enjoy the beautiful things that come our way. “Show care for others; take care of our minds”, that is what H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche advises. For many years, Rinpoche has been teaching his effective spiritual methods of how to be happy and to lead a meaningful life. Though they may outwardly appear to be unconventional, his methods and teachings are in fact deeply rooted in the Buddhist tradition, with a basis and a lineage to be found in the timeless, ancient wisdom of Lord Buddha’s teachings from over 2,500 years ago. UNExpected thus shows us this powerful, yet seemingly unconventional approach of Tsem Rinpoche’s towards spirituality for ultimate peace and happiness.

Although Rinpoche was raised by a family who adhered to conventional societal norms and expectations, he himself broke away from these norms that held his family enthralled. And despite a childhood of great suffering, he has successfully cultivated a mind of real inner peace and joy through the methods that he now teaches and skilfully guides people in, with great love and compassion.

The modern world we live in is filled with distractions that disturb the mind more than bring the peace and happiness so desired by all. UNExpected is therefore a manual of how to use unconventional methods to be truly happy and to live life peacefully in this world that is so disturbed by stress and competitiveness, and the focus on “I” and “Me”. This book presents the gems of Rinpoche’s wisdom, which spell out creative and powerful methods to achieve true freedom from suffering, lasting peace and happiness, and even enlightenment. These methods are error-free as they are based on the timeless wisdom of Lord Buddha’s teachings. Many great Buddhist masters and scholars have immersed themselves in these methods and, through them, found their way to their goals of ultimate peace and enlightenment.

I find the following aspects of UNExpected most impressive and inspiring.

Add Spirituality to Our Lives:
Let’s not forget others

“We can still enjoy the beautiful things around us, but let’s not forget to take care of our minds and let’s not forget others.”

  1. “In the Buddha I trust.” From the insights he developed in meditation over 2500 years ago, Buddha Shakyamuni taught us with exact precision why we suffer when we think we are going to be happy. We suffer because we cling to the objects that we think will bring happiness – objects like wealth and our relationships. These ‘conventional objects’ of happiness disappoint us in the end because they are impermanent. We cling to them and we try to make them permanent, and that reinforces our suffering when we are faced with the reality of time and decay that they are not.
  2. “Happiness is a choice.”
    1. The choice is between following cultural and societal norms of achieving happiness through pursuing relationships and acquisitions of wealth, or adopting Buddha’s way of letting go of our clinging to all these conventional objects of happiness. For in truth, these conventional objects bring suffering. So we can choose conventions, or turn instead to the unconventional path of caring for others and benefiting them.
    2. But it is a difficult choice. It is difficult to accept the unconventional as we have been habituated and taught from young “conventional is right and unconventional is wrong”. For may people, society and the people around them becoming overwhelming in their assertion of what is right and what is wrong. People who are creative and intelligent but are unconventional are often dismissed, without a second thought, as “strange” or “weird”, and may even end up becoming “social outcasts” simply because they do not follow what is expected of everyone else.
  3. Choose with wisdom as this choice concerns a path that will lead us to a truly happy and meaningful life, with a peace that will endure. Wisdom comes from studying the Dharma (the Buddha’s teachings) and contemplating deeply on them. When clarity arises in the mind, thanks to greater knowledge and contemplation, then we will naturally develop wisdom.

Why do we study Lord Buddha’s teachings to find the way to real happiness and meaning in life? Buddha Shakyamuni had lived it all; every single conventional object of happiness that you can ever imagine was laid at his feet. He was a handsome prince living as Prince Siddhartha in a luxurious palace with a beautiful wife and a son, when he decided to go in search of the meaning of life. He left his palace and lovely family to find a path to the cessation of suffering and yet, to this day, there are still people who express disapproval for what he did!

Nonetheless, a study of his life will show us that, without a doubt, Prince Siddhartha left his family because he worried about how they would live, grow old and die, without any meaning and purpose to their lives. So he sought the truth to the meaning of life for his family as well as for all beings. He subsequently spent six years in deep meditation and from that he discovered the path to the cessation of suffering, and unchanging happiness. He then spent the next 40 years of his life teaching this and the methods to real happiness and peace.

After him, many great pandits and teachers studied his teachings (the Dharma) and followed his path to find their own true peace and happiness. The Buddha’s way is the way of kindness and compassion, peace and love.

  1. The Wisdom Way – Kindness

“Kindness is the best religion. It doesn’t matter what religion you are. Just BE KIND.”

Practising kindness and care towards others, instead of indulging in self-grasping and self-cherishing, is the way of wisdom. It is the way to go. Tsem Rinpoche has advised us “not to forget others” – the poor, the homeless and the needy.

As Mother Teresa had said, “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you took me in.”.”

In the same vein, Steve Jobs has this reminder for us:

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.”

What is truly important, that we all too often only realise at the point of death, is not any of our material wealth, our relationships or even our body, our name or our fame. These do not matter because we have to discard all of them and leave this life alone.

What is truly important are the seeds of kindness and wisdom sown in our minds, which will bring us real inner peace and lasting happiness. Once you have developed a peaceful mind, you will be able to view all things of this life as impermanent and graciously let go of them. You will be able to accept all the pleasurable and sad moments that life brings you, and graciously let go of them too, knowing that they too will pass. When death comes, you will be able to graciously let go all that you had acquired but have to leave behind.

Be kind to other beings who have inherited the earth like you and me. Be kind to animals , birds and fishes. Be kind to the environment. Be kind to planet earth. Be vegetarian, save lives, and adopt them. To be kind and giving to the poor and needy, to save animals and the environment – all these acts of kindness and compassion are generally not so readily acceptable because they do not follow the norm of behaviour in any society. To take money and resources, and use them in our own pursuit of pleasure seems to be the norm. We keep habituating ourselves with the belief that this is the right thing to do as this is what society tells us to do, or the advertisements on mass media lull us into believing we should do.

But look at the elderly among us, who have spent their whole life in pursuit of their own wealth and happiness. See how broken down they are in the end, how depressed and lonely and bitter! Deserted by the young who are following in their footsteps of chasing the same dreams!

  1. Kindness is our inherent nature. We all have the inherent nature of kindness, compassion and love. Spiritual guides like Tsem Rinpoche have been patiently and skilfully guiding their students towards awakening these innate good qualities in us. We should therefore add spirituality to our lives by cultivating wisdom and kindness for true peace and happiness.

 

Add Spirituality to Our Lives:
Take care of our minds

Spirituality is also about creating peace in our minds, through wisdom.

  1. All thoughts are creations of the mind, even anger. Let it go. Do not let anger control you, for anger destroys peace.
  2. Winning isn’t everything. It’s how you play the game so have integrity. Abandon hurting others, as all harming of others will come back to you.
  3. Be focused on gaining wisdom through meditation, so that you can confront the crazy and confused world with a clarity of mind, to direct your choices and course of actions well.
  4. Engage in contemplation. Calm the mind and gain clarity for wisdom to arise and peace to abide there.

We should thus add spirituality to our lives by training and controlling our minds and, through meditation, gain clear and deep insights into true reality. Thus will we develop a mind of peace through wisdom.

 

Achieving the Impossible Is the Spirit and the Way to Go

Taking the path less travelled – the unconventional path – to ultimate peace and happiness requires extraordinary courage, patience and perseverance. As Rinpoche says, “How much we want anything is how hard we make it.” Everything may seem to be a struggle now but we should not give up because one day we will win.

We should also walk this path with optimism and I particularly like the phrase “No Way But Up”; it really is the right positive attitude to take.

For all of this, we need a qualified and experienced spiritual guide to lead us on the path. Over and above it, though we take responsibility for our choice of which direction to go, we should take advice and guidance from an experienced and qualified spiritual guide who has walked the unconventional path himself.

 

Being the Light. Being You – Unique, Different and Special

Be you. Be unique, different and special. Be unconventional but live by the way of peace, compassion and wisdom. Everyone’s different so accept all and not be judgemental. Make your decisions and your choices and take responsibility for them. In the midst of the crowd, find yourself. Be yourself.

I find that UNExpected is a distinctive manual of how to live a life of meaning and attain a state of mind of true peace and happiness, by walking the unconventional path of kindness and wisdom. It is unconventional because it requires us to behave in a manner that is against the social norms. Unconventional because it goes against what society tells us is the correct thing to do. But simply because society tells us what is the correct thing to do, does not mean that on an ultimate level, it is correct for everything that exists within society is a social construct. It is not the universal law of truth, kindness and wisdom that is appreciated everywhere regardless of race, religion, background, upbringing and socioeconomic status. So for me, UNExpected also shows us clearly that we should walk this path with fierce conviction, and a courage and determination to succeed. When we follow it all the way, we will find that there is no way to go but up. In truth, there is really no other way but this UNExpected way to true peace and happiness.

    This article is a reminder for us to be kind ALWAYS!. We do not need to be spiritual to be kind, we just need to be human. It is easier to bring out the inherent goodness in us as it is natural. Human has feelings and can relate to another human being. When someone is suffering, then we should help ease their suffering. This is what is always taught by our Guru, Tsem Rinpoche.

    Happiness is a choice we make every single minute with all that is happening in our lives. We can be struck by disaster anytime and whatever we cling on to will not mean anything to us when we leave this earth. So, make a conscious choice to be happy no matter what. May not be easy at first but as we practice, we get better at it. In every bad situation, there is a silver lining. Keep our focus on the positive and we will see the situation change for the better.

    We are taught since young to excel in exam so as to get a well-paid job, to be successful in society and be wealthy. Material and relationship has been the main focus that everyone pursues and clings on to, thinking that by achieving all these, we will be happy forever. Unfortunately all these searching will not guarantee us peace in mind and eventually we will leave this world without any possession of the wealth or relationship. All the things we pursue in the world will somehow create more greed and more sufferings. And we eventually forget the real purpose of us being in this world; forget about what the real happiness and peace is. It’s the awareness for us to realize that happiness and peace can only be searched within, not through any materialistic achievement in the external world. All we need is great courage to take the unconventional route, to study and practice Dharma; be kind and care for others. Through meditation and contemplation, we can gain more clarity and wisdom to lead a truly happy and meaningful life.

    All religions are means, principally, to make human beings become better, more creative and more refined as said. In Buddhism, the crucial practice is understood to be for the transforming and improving the mind, whereby our previous negative thoughts can be dispelled and replaced by positive compassionate ones! Like you said, Kechara’s creative team of JP Thong and Joy Kam who have compiled a book called the “Unexpected” has even voiced the need to add “spirituality” to our lives while continuing to enjoy the beautiful things that come our way. “The Buddha taught that there is no enemy more powerful than the mind.” Like our Guru, H.E. The 25th Tsem Rinpoche has also said, “We can still enjoy the beautiful things around us, but let’s not forget to take care of our minds and let’s not forget others.” Yes, the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater our own sense of well-being becomes. Cultivating a cause, warmhearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. This helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter. It is the ultimate source of success in life, that is universally helpful; something that all people appreciate, whether religious or not, i.e. the principle of interdependence! Therefore, by training our minds and getting used to such a view of interdependence make our mind more relaxed and open. This will change our way of looking at things, and gradually will change our behaviour and do less harm to others. Like what our Lord Buddha said: “The thought manifests as the word, the word manifests as the deed, the deed develops into character and the habit hardens into character. So watch the thought and it’s way with care and let it spring from Love, born out of concern for all beings.” A great many thanks to Paster Lim Han Nee for the sharing.

    Reading this I feel that, one of the best ways to live lives could be to keep an open mind at all times. Sometimes the truth is less obvious, and one could even think that it is counterintuitive. Most people would not tread the less travelled path.

    However observing that many people have found happiness practicing Buddhism is some evidence that points to dharma being an elixir that can lift our consciousness to a whole new level and that buddhism is a valid path like many of the system of spiritual practices in this world capable of giving us peace and contentment.

    I had not read the book UNEXPECTED, therefore it is much appreciated to read a review by Pastor Han Nee. The succinct review entices me to want to pick up the book and read it immediately. I especially want to read about “Add Spirituality to Our Lives:
    Take care of our minds”. I strongly believe that what we say and do is a direct reflection of our thoughts in our mind. Therefore, while we embark on the journey of spirituality, we must apply the spiritual nectar into our daily life too. How much we apply is how convicted we are on the path.     This “UNEXPECTED ” book very suitable to many novice spiritual seeker. Tsem Rinpoche keep emphasizing on compassion and altruism. We must remove “I” or self cherishing mind in whatever good deeds we did.
    Apply 8 verses of thought transformation in order to practice altruism which benefit more people.
    Dharma is about mind transformation to achieve timeless happiness.
    This book is very valuable and must share with friends.

    Yesterday is history,tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift live our lives to the fullness and meaningful
    Life’s true gift lies in our freedom to design it beautifully. With each rise of the sun, we get to chase the opportunity to fill our days with meaning—to live our life the way of peace, compassion and wisdom.
    We should take advice and guidance from Rinpoche who has walked the unconventional path. Add spirituality to our lives by training and controlling our minds as advice by Rinpoche inorder to live happyly and peacefully.

    Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.

    Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.

    Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

    All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.

    Winning the lottery was part of my dreams, I tried so hard to win big but all to no avail, until I came across Dr Lucas online who made my dreams come through and made me win 10 million dollars. I was a logistics manager who lives in Lancaster, S.C. and works about an hour’s drive away, in Charlotte, N.C., I stopped at a store to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket during my lunch break, because Dr Lucas gave me all the assurance that the numbers are not going to fail after I did all he asked me to do.     The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

    An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.

They are practitioners dedicated their life to religious observance and their path is illuminated by the light of compassion. Going against all odds to become one.     H E Tsem Rinpoche’s Sungbum project aim to preserve the teachings and practices that have been passed from teacher to disciple in an unbroken line beginning with Lama Tsongkhapa himself . History has taught us the importance of preserving Buddha’s stainless teachings. Its important to preserve and safeguard the Buddhist tradition for future generations.
    Tsem Rinpoche is a clear and effective teacher where his stories and teachings are endlessly entertaining and inspiring. The preservation is very much needed. We are so fortunate given a chance to be involved in such a meritorious project .

    Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. All thanks to our Guru bringing this practice to Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong Malaysia.

    Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .

My Dharma boy (left) and Oser girl loves to laze around on the veranda in the mornings. They enjoy all the trees, grass and relaxing under the hot sun. Sunbathing is a favorite daily activity. I care about these two doggies of mine very much and I enjoy seeing them happy. They are with me always. Tsem Rinpoche

He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'.
