Shadow People

SP-01

Dear friends,

Have you heard of the ‘Shadow People’? I frequently hear friends share their personal experiences about spirit disturbances and one of the dark beings they will talk about is known as the Shadow People.

It is fascinating to hear these stories because from these paranormal stories, we learn that beings like that do exist and there are other forms of life besides ours. The afterlife is not just a fairy tale made up by people but it is in fact a reality. Being a Buddhist, we learn that everything that we do creates karma, which in turn determines what happens to us in the future, be it in this lifetime or future lifetimes.

I would like to thank Martin, Beatrix and Pastor Jean Ai for helping me in this article.

Best regards,
Vinnie Tan

SP-02

The presence of Shadow People may be seen or even felt. Commonly we hear how the Shadow People can be like a peripheral vision – we know it’s there but we cannot make it out clearly (usually something see from the corner of our eyes), or it can be like having a strong feeling that something or someone is watching you. It can also be like a shadow that appears vaguely and then disappears quickly from your vision. The first records of Shadow People were by the indigenous people in around 1153 BC. Today, we hear reports sightings of Shadow People all over the world, and the way they are described concurs across cultures and borders. It shows that these Shadow People are not bound to a specific place, society, country and ethnicity.

Who or what are Shadow People?

The Shadow People are believed to be neither human nor animal in nature. Their form can differ and vary in size and features. However, they are generally black or dark figures that do not have any specific definition so it is difficult to make out what they truly look like except to say they are best described as shadows, hence the name Shadow People.

The most common description of the Shadow People by people who have seen them is that they are like dark silhouettes that do not have distinctive features. What is common is that some of them appear to be wearing a hat or a coat and at other times, they are described as having yellow or red eyes. It is because of these red or yellow eyes that rumours began that the Shadow People are a form of demon. Yet nothing else apart from the colour of the eyes would indicate that they might be demonic.

SP-03

The Shadow People like to cause fear and anxiety which they then feed on, resulting in victims feeling tremendous dread. Like all beings, they can be harmless or they can harbour negative intentions. Therefore when we attempt to make contact with Shadow People without knowing their true nature, we may incur more harm than good in the long run. When harmful things like that happen, it is difficult for us to protect ourselves except to seek for spiritual intervention through the protective prayers and practices of powerful protective deities like Dorje Shugden, Sengdongma or Dukkar.

There are a few theories of who or what these Shadow People really are. For a start, people who are skeptics and do not believe in the paranormal will say that these beings are a part of our imagination. Others say that these spirits are the souls of dead people who are unaware of their death and are still living their lives as though they were alive. Some say that these are astral bodies of the living, astral-travelling while they are asleep. However, the theory that I personally think is the most plausible is that Shadow People are the mind or consciousness of the dead trying to communicate with the living for something. As these are afterlife beings, they can also be demonic entities that have made their way to us for more sinister reasons.

Shadow People are often thought to be male in appearance, although there are accounts that have described them in the form of a woman, child or an animal. These beings move quickly and they are able to disappear into walls, walk through doors, vanish into thin air, and perform other similarly unexplainable acts. Most of the time, accounts from people who have witnessed these entities say that the Shadow People will just stand and watch them from a corner. Ironically, when they are being directly looked at, the Shadow People will avoid eye contact and will shift away and eventually disappear. However, even after their disappearance, the person suffering the ‘attacks’ of the Shadow People will still have a constant feeling of being watched.

SP-04

Some of these Shadow People ‘attack’ when we are at our most vulnerable such as when we are asleep or about to fall into a state of deep sleep. ‘Attacks’ can come in the form of sleep paralysis or something else, which is scary because during the experience, victims will not be able to help themselves at all. They can struggle and try to scream or call out, but their shouts cannot be heard and their struggles cannot be seen by others around them. Those Shadow People who attack are more malevolent and they want something from the people they appear to. It is said that sometimes these Shadow People want the souls of the people that they come into contact with.

One of the very distinctive characteristics of these Shadow People is that they are able to move very fast and travel at very high speeds, which is possible. In Buddhism we learn that there are beings that can travel at the speed of thought. Thus, if we have some karmic connection to these beings, even by the mere thought of recalling them, we actually summon them to come to us. The only way to protect ourselves is through our daily sadhana practices and also our practice in our respective religious faith.

The fact that Shadow People disappear when they are looked at indicates that they are aware of their actions. They know when we are looking at them, which also means that when they show themselves to us, they intend for us to see them. The reason they fear us paying attention to them might be because they are negative in nature and want to create chaos when we are not paying attention. Thus when the living pay attention to them, they are afraid their intentions will be known to us. This may lead the potential victims to take precautionary or remedial measures, which they do not want. There are cases where people, after waking up from their sleep, experienced a Shadow Person in a hat and long trench coat saying, “I almost got you.” It shows that some of these Shadow People are very malevolent and will harm you.

SP-05

Through the many accounts of experiences that others have shared online, it seems the greatest harm Shadow People have caused is disturbance in their sleep, sleep paralysis (whereby the victim cannot move or talk but they are fully awake), and communicating to get people to do things for them. Some people suffer from depression, anxiety and even mild insanity due to pressure from others who do not believe them about the Shadow People disturbing them. This is also another way Shadow People harm their victims, by alienating them from their loved ones and close friends.

Types of Shadow People

Three of the most frightening accounts I have heard of the Shadow People are known as ‘The Hat Man’, ‘The Yellow-Eyed Being’ and ‘The Red-Eyed Being’. What the three types of Shadow People have in common is that they are extremely dark, as though there is no light that can pass through. These particular Shadow People feed on the fear that people have. Thus when some people have encounters with these beings, they always feel very drained and tired no matter how much they rest.

There are other accounts of how a man-like Shadow Person wearing something like a fedora appears at the corner of the room or even by the bedside, just staring at the person. This is why Shadow People are also called ‘Hat Man’ sometimes. Everyone who has come across this Hat Man have said that they have never seen the Hat Man remove his hat. But what is common is that he will tip his hat when he knows that his presence has been noticed. After that, he will disappear. There are no other explanations as to why he does this. However, my guess is that these Hat Men are not able to do anything to the person they approach when they are in full consciousness. They are only able to do harm when the person that they have approached is in the state of sub-consciousness.

SP-06

The Hat Man is sometimes seen with red eyes. Those who have cross paths with Red-Eyed Hat Man have described the eyes as being extremely red and unlike anything they have seen before. Just by looking at these beings, witnesses say their hearts will sink and they will suddenly feel very depressed. They immediately experience an anxiety and get sense of impending doom. There are records saying that sometimes there are people who are woken up in the night, only to see long bony hands reaching for their throats. When they look up, it is a very dark man-like shadow with brighter-than-blood red eyes looking directly at them. These Shadow People are recorded to have a long trench coat and a hat.

Or view the video on the server at:
https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/TheHatManDocumentary.mp4

Whenever people see red or yellow-eyed beings, they usually link it to demonic activity. The main reason for this is that the experiences of Shadow People always leave a negative and disturbing feeling behind. There is nothing that is nice about it.

Both the Red-Eyed Shadow People and Yellow-Eyed Shadow People are said to have prominent eyes that shine penetratingly in the dark. Both these beings are reportedly able to speak to us directly and we can hear what they say without any technological aid. Their voices are deep and otherworldly, and the things that they say are usually something that is not pleasant.

However, there are instances where these beings will just stand in places that makes it obvious they are there and they will make their presence known to you even if it is just for a few seconds. The people who have came across these beings always say that they know these entities are malevolent and are there for a very nasty reason.

SP-07

Through my research, I came across an eyewitness who shared his experience. One time before he went into deep sleep, he saw two Shadow People at the corner of his room. One of them had yellow eyes, and the other had red eyes. The eyewitness knew that these Shadow People were nasty and negative beings. He felt that the Red-Eyed Being was more malevolent and vicious. However, he was lucky as these beings did not do anything to him and he came away unharmed.

How you can protect yourself

What you can do if you have sightings or feel like you are being watched by Shadow People or similar beings is to light some juniper incense (you can get them from VajraSecrets), then recite this prayer and request the protector Dorje Shugden for protection. At the same time, use the smoke from the juniper incense to clear the energy of the space around you. Make sure the smoke permeates every corner of your room, house or office or wherever you have experienced the Shadow People.

SP-08

If you happen to come face-to-face with these beings, you can chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden, Sengdongma or Dukkar, seven times or more. Then blow the mantra onto these Shadow People to bless them and also as protection. After doing so, if you are still freaked out over what has happened, you can continue to chant the mantra under your breath until you feel better.

The best way to protect yourself is by doing the protective prayers of deities like Dorje Shugden, Sengdongma or Dukkar daily to ask them for their blessings. These deities are known for their ability to help us with spirit disturbances and pacifying black magic spells. Through the practice it generates blessings and protection for us. Hence, through invoking these deities by chanting their mantras, we will be able to protect ourselves using the sound of the mantras. Personally what I find very useful is the practice of Dorje Shugden who has helped me get over many instances where I was in fear because I thought that there is an entity near me.

A short story

This story was told to me by a friend about how a black figure is always with him since he was young. To protect his identity, we shall call this friend of mine ‘Harry’. This figure that Harry spoke about fits the characteristics of Shadow People where the figure is intensely dark with no distinctive features. The only feature that can be worked out is that it is not in the form of a human, but an animal with yellow eyes. It is a big beastly entity that is bigger and taller than any average man.

SP-11

When Harry was a kid, he did not know better and would always play with this Shadow Entity. As he got older, the Entity would ask him to do things to hurt the people around him and also to hurt himself. When asked why he behaved in such a way, Harry would say that it was his alter-ego (the Shadow Entity) that was telling him to behave like that. In the 30 years since Harry began communicating with this being, it formed a very strong connection to him and would often ‘possess’ Harry to use his body for harmful things. Harry would have no choice but to allow this to happen as the being threatened to hurt his children.

Whenever Harry wanted to break that connection with the Entity, it made it very difficult for Harry to do so. The being would create more disturbances in his daily life which included having things flying across rooms. Harry’s family members would suddenly have very bad medical conditions that required them to be hospitalised, but the doctors would not be able to diagnose what is wrong. Harry would also keep hearing a voice that telling him that the Sengdongma practices he does are of no use. The Entity would even tell him that if he wants his family members to be alright and not die due to the unexpected illnesses, he would have to stop the Sengdongma practices. This was very scary as the Entity used Harry’s love towards his family and the fear of losing them to control him. It was trying to force Harry to give up the practice as relying on Sengdongma would break the bond between them (Harry and the Entity).

SP-09

Harry is still doing the Sengdongma practice today. He has told me that the attacks are getting more frequent now but he knows that he should persevere with the practice because of the beneficial result it will eventually have. It is only a matter of time before the being has to let go thanks to Sengdongma’s protection, and Harry feels that the Shadow Person knows it too. That is why the Shadow Person is trying so hard to discourage him from continuing with Sengdongma’s practice. Harry knows that by doing the Sengdongma practice, it will help to break that connection that he has with the Shadow Entity.

I would like to wish Harry all the best in his practice and hope that everything will be good for him and his spiritual journey.

Conclusion

Through this sharing, I hope that you now have more information about Shadow People. These beings may not appear to harm you at first, but their initial benevolence might be just a ploy to encourage you to create a connection with them before they start demanding things, and harming you and your loved ones.

SP-10

Please do not engage with any form of supernatural beings that are unenlightened and never rely on them. When we do that, we will only get hurt because such beings are not operating out of compassion and wisdom, and they do not have clairvoyance on an enlightened level to see where their advice will lead us. If we rely on them and follow their advice, by the time we see the damage, it is usually too late when we could have prevented the harm by just not engaging in matters like that.

This is great to finally read something regarding the shadow people. I’d like to share my experience of what happened one night I saw what I thought to be a shadowman. He looked just like the photo shown the man with the long coat and fedora…One night at my house i had my uncle n his partner over, my children were asleep in bed. My uncle, his partner and I had been working most the night setting up furniture and laying carpet as I only moved in few months earlier and was still setting up afterwards we sat down for a coffee and smoke and I felt the urge to look up so I did and that’s when i saw the shadow man I was fixated I couldn’t look away must’ve only lasted a few seconds but felt much longer, he appeared near and open end wall and walked across the wall I could see his hat and coat and side profile that’s when he turned to look at me then turned away and reached his arm out and his arm extended belong the wall so his fingers touched the curtains hanging, he pushed the curtains open then disappeared as to walk out thru the curtain. I had goosebumps n my hair were stood up on my arms I immediately looked at my uncle’s partner and she had the same look she asked if I just saw that aswell, i confirmed…my uncle didn’t believe immediately until his partner also told him then he said to us less check the time I bet ita 3.30(AM) so I pulled my phone checked the time it was exactly 3.30am I was in shock a few moments later I hear my son scream from the room and I go to investigate my uncle held me back and said NO, I’ll check. Shortly after he comes out and says everything was fine etc. A few days later he tells me when he went to the room to check on my son, that my son who was 4 at the time was standing up in the room rubbing his eyes there was no blanket or pillow on his bed so my uncle asked what happened he said my son told him that my other son had pulled him out of bed, but as my uncle recalls my other son was heavily asleep in the bed beside him. I should also mention that the same son kept complaining ONLY afterwards of a shadow hand on his door and each time he tried to show me I couldn’t see it, until one night I laid on my sons bed and turned my head a certain way I could see the shadow hand and it was very clearly am elderly frail shadow hand with long nails dropping. I scrubbed it off it was a white chalky substance then I check to make sure it was gone and it was and my son began sleeping in his room but a few weeks later the same shadow hand is back. I dont think it’s anything to be worried about could you help shed further light?

  4. Laura on Jan 17, 2019 at 9:41 am

I have had 2 encounters with shadow people . First was the hat man wearing a trench coat, it was standing at the bottom of my bed, I was petrified but it disappeared when I turned the light on. Second time I was on holiday and woke during the night to sleep paralysis but out the corner of my eye I could make out 2 shadow people who were pushing me down on the bed. I remember asking them to leave in the name of Jesus Christ and it stopped. These were both a few years ago and I truly hope it never happens again.

Thank you Vinnie for this very interesting article about Shadow People. These few days I suddenly recall back that I have encountered Shadow People many times in my Grandparents house where i grew up in. I always see these shadows at the corner of my eyes at a glimpse but it didnt disturb me and i didnt feel scared. I thought there was something wrong with my eyes and just ignored it. Now I think back and maybe it could be our family ancestors because my next door neighbour aunty had the same experience with her late mum’s soul coming back to visit her everytime.

  6. Andrea Lai on Nov 26, 2016 at 10:59 pm

Interesting article. When I’m reading this, memories flash back many years ago. I experienced myself this shadow people appeared several times at the same place but in different occasion. It happened at my close friend house where I used to hang around.

When I first encountered this black figure I thought it was my eyes problem. When I start seeing few times,I started get curious and tell my friend about it. What she told me, the existing of black figure was most probably from person who have passed away which she mean was her belated father. Since then, I will see this figure whenever I traveled with her family or have big grand dinner with them. Though it may sound scary,to me it is harmless. There is one time, he stand very close, almost 5ft away from me!From my fast glance,I could see smoke on top of his head as I knew he smokes. The last time,I saw him was my friend’s mom funeral where he stood lying stylishly on a bike..lol.

Overall what I see that shadow people appeared merely for a reason. For me, their existence is to show they care and concern of their love ones.

  7. Sarah Yap on Nov 7, 2016 at 7:27 pm

Very interesting. When I was younger, I used to see dark shadows at the corner of my eye, but when I turn to have a good look, it will disappear. I cant say for sure if it’s a shadow people incident, but the dark shadows that I used to see gradually faded as I got older.

I do not doubt that there are supernatural beings around us all the time.

  8. Wan Wai Meng on Oct 27, 2016 at 11:56 pm

I thought i had a supernatural experience when I was very young, I woke up but felt paralyzed It was dark and I could not see anything. At that age I had learnt Amitabha’s mantra, I recited it as best I could, and I kind of broke away from that paralysis.

  9. Pastor Patsy on Aug 26, 2016 at 4:41 pm

Thank you for this interesting post. There is nothing nice about the Shadow People. These beings are around due to their karma to be this realm of existence.

I have a friend who had these experiences with the Shadow People for some time and his health was also deteriorating. Not many people believe what he was experiencing and he even had to visit a psychiatrist but to no avail. He started taking refuge in The Three Jewels and also started on Dorje Shugden’s practice. Recently he told me that the “voices” and disturbances became less, he can sleep better and his body ache has lessened. He told me that occasionally when he is disturbed during his sleep and the body ache becomes intense, he will recite Dorje Shugden mantras and blow onto his body and the pain will subside. Hopefully with faith and devotion in his practice, my friend will be able to break off his karmic affinity with these entities.

  10. Edward Ooi on Jul 6, 2016 at 6:26 pm

I am very glad that Harry knows that Sengdongma’s practice will definitely get rid of the negative entity and I hope that he will have supreme faith in Sengdongma and that he will not give up. I simply cannot imagine how much fear Harry is feeling when he’s being threatened by the entity. The worst part is that the entity has been with him for more than 30 years which definitely is terrifying.

Just like Vinnie has mentioned, spirits are just like people where some of them are good and some of them are bad. I have heard many stories of people having a “Guardian Angel” by their side ever since they were kids, not only that the “Guardian Angel” would also protect those people whenever they are in danger. The “Guardian Angel” would act like a parent and they would sometimes also communicate with those people. Some of the people said that their Guardian Angel are their deceased parents or someone who hold them close from previous lifetimes or even in this current lifetime. It may actually sound sweet but it is actually very sad because the dead cannot let go of their attachments and move on to the afterlife and take a good rebirth. They are basically stuck in this realm, unwilling to let go.

There was a part of the Hat Man documentary where they shared a story where a person woke up in the middle of the night and saw a Hat Man near to his bed and he said: “I almost got you. That specific part really petrified me. Imagine if we were in the person’s shoes. Thank you Vinnie for sharing this awesome article with us.

Thanks Vinnie for sharing this article on Shadow People, it’s informative, with well done research and real story sharing; most importantly sharing on effective ways to protect oneself when one is face to face/facing the Shadow People. Having the correct information about things we fear of, is the first step for one to get help and apply any method might help them.

I find the information about the Shadow People is quite complete and helpful for one to learn more about the being. I observe the similarity of Shadow People and people with negative energy, or bad intention. All could instil fear and not good feeling being around them; and they are not helpful…Even we might not be able to help many, but we can always try hard to not leave negative feeling to those come near us…

  12. Pavara Lam on Jul 4, 2016 at 11:39 pm

There is really no lie that the shadow people exist.
It is kind of scary to know that these beings can harm even though they can’t be seen. When they are visible there really isn’t much one can do to get rid of the shadow people. Therefore it is really important to practice Dorje Shugden, we may never know when these beings are around and when they will strike us thus it is better to be prepared.

Thank you Vinnie for sharing this post.

I have never stumbled upon these things, am thankful for that. It would be a nice post to share with those who has interest on this. Instead of being afraid of them, we should gathered up our courage to have compassion for them. One will never know if we can actually do that unless…. we are in it!

Thanks Vinnie for this post on Shadow Man.

  14. HelenaC on Jun 28, 2016 at 1:33 pm

Its very interesting article. thanks for sharing Vinnie. Shadow people might be harmful or might not be but it is best for us to not connect with them. Whenever i feel uneasy and feel some negative feelings wherever i am i will chant DS mantra and dedicate to them for their better rebirth and as well as protection for me. Hope they will suffer less.

  15. pammie yap on Jun 24, 2016 at 9:56 pm

Thank you Vinnie for this interesting post. This is actually the first time I hear about the shadow people. And the scary part was that I was reading it alone in my cabin at night… And listening/watching the videos was not helping either… lol. But I am not scared because I have Dorje Shugden by my side…

I believe that the shadow people are not good people. From what I have read and heard above, I have not gotten any thing positive on them. Whether or not they are positive or negative beings, we should not even make contact with them.
As Buddhists, we are lucky that there are practices for someone encountering such problems. But like Harry, perseverance is the key for the practice no matter what happens because in the long run, the practices can only benefit and help.

  16. Sock Wan on Jun 20, 2016 at 2:48 pm

Thank you Vinnie for the interesting article, when I was young I used to see dark shadow at the corner of my eyes when I was in my grandparents’ house. I thought it was just my imagination, but I think they must have been the shadow people. They did not do anything harmful, maybe they were just passing through the house. In any case, even if we can see the normally unseen beings, we should not establish a connection with them, some of them are evil, they will try ways to hurt us or try to take over our body like the friend Vinnie. When we deal with the unseen, we should not have fear, but with compassion. Recite mantra with the motivation that they maybe liberated from their sufferings, not trying to chase them away with anger. We do hope they can take a better rebirth so they do have not to suffer anymore.

I have so many stories I don’t know where to start since I was a baby my mother would tell me that I will always talk to things that she couldn’t see I grew up that way I’m 46 this June 20th and all of my kids would always tell me that they saw Shadows shape people and when they would get real scared white light will shoot out from the light bulb and all the shadow people go away in to the corners ,this is before we even had internet so I knew they weren’t lying. My kids grew up very honest there are already all pretty much adults. I told them and I showed them how not to fear them because they do feed from our fears . I would tell them to grab a Bible and keep reading until their stomach doesn’t feel upset anymore as I grew up I taught them how to do the incense and how to pray around the house in the area Exedra . Sadly it got pretty violent scratching growling noises voices . One of the Dark Shadows kept appearing in my closet with red eyes, one of my boys went to dump the trash outside it was hiding hunched over behind the trash can grabbed his leg , he threw the trash and ran inside. when it got that bad we just blessed house the whole house from head to toe every cabinet every entry everywhere. We did not do it right the first time and what i mean by that my childern wete not being serious things.Things got worse the second time we did it my kids were very tough very brave With Tears in their eyes with strength in their heart we blessed the house again. I put holy water on their forehead and bless them to make sure nothing will try to go into us after we finished blessed the house there was a smell of roses, one of my kids said I smell roses the other one said no it smells like vanilla, The other one said do we have cookies in the oven. Then one of my boys said my friend his mom they go and bless people houses they volunteer and they said when they do it right they get the smell of vanilla cookies are roses. He said we did it right . So things were quiet for a very long time but WE STILL see them in the yard. Coming home from work late at night heavy fog driving very slowly in my neighborhood a block away before I got to my house. I saw heavy black shadow.I look up at it,it looked like a black caped prehistoric bird . It glided of a low hanging tree to the front of my car lights then slide it back off the street on to the tree across . It just slid softy into the tree it could see the branches move it was huge it looks like humongous bird .I prayed a lot before I got out of the car so I could go into the house with no fear so it won’t follow mme in .I believe it was the one my son saw behind the trash can .Of course you have to continue to do the ritual of blessing your house because if not they’ll start coming back in again. My kids and I have always been pretty clairvoyant it runs in my side of the family my mother tould me it’s from generations ago not a fun gift. My dreams are very intense forget about deep sleeping. Myself I could have episodes of the lifetime in less than 12 minutes of closing my eyes justs minutes and sleep traveling into bodies that were already had passed away realizing that I was in that bodies that was never me in different countries recently jumping into a actually spirit and I walked around in my dream and people couldn’t see me they could feel me and they would creep out
I bumped into another spirit that had passed and he was talking to me about Spirit transformation a triangle and something about Prophets I was too busy trying to ask him questions about how did I jump into a spirit not a body of spirit.Of course I did research once I woke up and found out information about triangles and transformation that I wasn’t aware of that all whatsoever . Thats the kind of information I get from my dreams and other Spirits trying to talk to me in my dreams. I could tell which Spirit feel they’re ok and then which ones or the bad ones but.to those I do exercise and I do I exercise them in they turn into ashes just disappear, Sometimes butterflies. the ones that are trapped and need to descend usually are the ones that turn to ashes then fade Away into the air and they turn into butterflies .In my dream I have learned to be able to pull my spirit out of my body while I’m sleeping and travel . I learned how to do that slowly from my horrible experiences of being pinned down in bed by my attackers. Any who I have alot to share if you want to contact me that’s OK. Something tould me to share it’s good that everyone is coming out of the fear and sharing. It’s the only way we can protect each other time to on pass the word if not you be manipulated into a corner. that’s why I would let my kids be openly to me always and not shut them away and tell them that it was there imagination. I didn’t tell him anything about myself until they started coming out with all their stories and then I started teaching them how to take care of their spirit. I’m dyslexic so sorry if this is hard to read .That’s why I don’t like to post too much it’s a pain LOL !!! Peace 🙂

What an interesting article. This reminds me of a story that I was told by a friend of mine. She moved into a house out in the countryside and the first night she was there, she experienced sightings of Shadow People. There were two of them, one male and one female standing in the hallway near her bathroom. She told me that they must have been the previous owners of the house who had become ghosts, and they really didn’t want her in their house.

Actually, from a Buddhist point of view this can really be the case. When people take rebirth in the Hungry Ghost realm, they are usually governed by the affliction of jealous that comes from their attachment to something. That is why you often here of places or objects being haunted, as the ghost or spirit it attached to a place or object. It is when we go to those places, or touch those objects, the ghost can get angry and come after us if we have the karma.

In cases like these we need to break the karmic link between ourselves and the ghost who harm us. This is done through generating compassion for these beings are they are suffering under the influence of their attachment, jealousy and the form that they are in. Another most effective method would be to engage in the daily practices of Dorje Shugden, especially in the form of Trakze. This practice is extremely effective in protecting oneself from the negative effects of such afflictions but also of other obstacles in our life.

  20. CindyH on Jun 17, 2016 at 8:25 am

Basically if the Shadow Spirits are in that form, it is safe to conclude that it didn’t arise from positive karma. As explained by Rinpoche and even in the Lamrim, such spirits/beings suffer through attempting to fulfil their samsaric/worldly desires yet it is an exercise in futility, because they lack the physical bodies to be able to act out such lusts. Thus, any dealings with them logically will not be generally positive.

It is one thing if one happens to have the karma for such being to harm/attempt to harm you (in which case there are many protective mantras and rituals which can be done to exhaust such karma between the spirit/being and you. To name but a few; Dorje Shugden Trakze to Dispel Black Magic & Spirits = https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/trakze-to-dispel-black-magic-spirits.html and Protection from Black Magic and Spirits = https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/protection-from-black-magic-and-spirits.html ), it is just extremely risky if you are actively seeking /continue contact with such beings for your own reasons. It is always going to be a question of time as to when you need to pay the “high price” in exchange for such “favours”. Harry’s experience (although quite unfortunate for him) where the spirit threatened Harry with his family and proceed to wreak havoc in their lives (when Harry refuse to allow such spirit who suffer from earthly lusts and addictions from seeking to fulfill those desires or “highs” through Harry’s physical body) serves as cautionary tale of such high price to pay.

Rinpoche has always stressed that such beings have to be treated with compassion and not feared. Technically, we are in the same boat as them too, as we allow our attachments/desire to govern most of our thoughts. And the only difference between us is that now we have a physical body. Also read before that when we chant mantras and recite Buddhist texts such as Lamrim out loud, all beings round us, including such spirits, will benefit from such exposure to Dharma and it is also an act of compassion.

I believe Shadow people exists since young. They can be harmful or unharmful. Thank you Vinnie for sharing this article as this has further proven that “they” do exist. This is something that scientists can’t explain till today. Scientists and psychologists will define and diagnose patients as having hallucination or mental problem or psychic when they tell them they were being bothered by the dark shadows. From young, I believe only the high lamas or monks can only help these people to be free from the “dark shadows”.

My son was disturbed by “something” once in the middle of the night where he woke up and cried very badly claiming that his leg was in pain and something disturbing his leg and something crawling on his leg. I examined and found no injuries nor any mosquitos or insects bite marks. He hugged me and said he was scared. Being a devotee of Goddess of Mercy for 25 years and then a Kecharian since Aug 2015, I immediately started to chant The Great Compassion mantra and OM Benza Wiki Bintana Soha to ask for protection. Upon finishing my mantra reciting, I blew the mantras onto my son’s leg. My son thereafter stopped crying and he told me he was ok and ready to go back to his room and sleep. The following night, my two children and I were sitting around the bed and started to recite OM Benza Wiki Bitana Soha and Migtsema mantras to ask for protection before they went to sleep. My son even put his Tsongkapha tsa tsa that been blessed during the Wesak Day beside his bed. Since then, the incident has never happened again. For this, I am very grateful to Kechara Sunday Dharma School as the teachers and pastors have taught my children how to recite Migtsema mantra and Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha. This is really important as mantras can always protect us from being “harmed” by the spirit.

From Vinnie’s write up, I feel thankful to her as I learn something new tonight ie to use Juniper incense to clear the energy then recite this prayer and request the protector Dorje Shugden for protection. Thank you to my Guru Tsem Rinpoche for setting up this blog to benefit so many people like myself.

Thank you vinnie for the great sharing, and it shows people that they do “exist”, I have this experience too in Singapore. We might felt nervous when we met , after practicing dharma, it turn to be calm and know the way to handle it. The only way to protect ourselves is through our daily sadhana practices and the faith.

  24. Cynthia Lee on Jun 14, 2016 at 3:20 am

In honesty, I have great fear for the unseen. I understand it’s due to my self-cherishing mind. Hence, what I find most interesting about this article is to chant and blow mantras onto these entities to bless them! Shadow people are sentient beings after all and nothing can harm me unless I have done harm to them.

Since I wouldn’t know for sure. Doing my daily sadhana for protection, clearing my negative karma and dedicating merits to them is the best thing I can do. Compassion is the way to go.

  25. Sharon Ong on Jun 13, 2016 at 3:16 pm

Never knew the name to these shadowy entities until I read your post, Vinnie. Before meeting Rinpoche, I used to get spooked by stuff like this. But thankfully after learning about spirits and such in Dharma class, I am not longer as fearful. Since having a Guru and Dharma protector in my life, I feel safe and protected. These days, whenever I get uneasy feelings or sense unwanted presence, I will chant any of the mantras as mentioned in the post. I also carry Protector Rice with me so that I can burn one grain in case of stronger presence.

This post is also a good reminder not to communicate with the supernatural as we do not know what their intentions are or if they are harmful. Some powerful and malevolent ones will even manipulate our thoughts to do harmful actions.

    Thanks for another great read!

Thank you Vinnie Tan for sharing this panaromal story with us. It is indeed very scary if anyone ever encounter such a being because a lot of us a helpless most people do not know where to seek for help and they have to suffer from fear and constant attack by this being in worst case some of them even lost their life, we are lucky because we have Rinpoche guidance and blessing to help us if any of us encounter these being .

  27. Edwin Tan on Jun 13, 2016 at 12:35 pm

    Dear Vinnie,

    Thank you for the article.

Many of us have the feelings of being watched, yet we do not know who or what is watching us. That itself creates a lot of anxiety and fear.. and I believe it is another feeding source for these shadow beings.

I thought on occasions I catch glimpse of them.. however, I will dismiss it as tired eyes.. of course, when I get really scared, I will chant Dorje Shugden’s mantra to bless and protect me. Sometimes Ducker’s mantra.

Just like what Beatrix mentioned, what we usually hear of are people in white or long hair.. might be more typical in this region.. maybe adaptive appearances? Worth more research… however, my encounters are usually with long-haired females in white.. sometimes with a child.. female too…

With Rinpoche’s blessings and protection, and with Rinpoche’s advice on daily saddhanas.. my sleep paralysis and disturbances stopped for many years.. and I wish it to be that way.

Nowadays, I always feel a glow of white light protecting me and my family, and whenever I feel “threatened” by sudden “odd” feelings, I will think of Rinpoche and Dorje Shugden and chant Protector’s mantra to keep calm and feel protected.

    Thank you.

  28. Beatrix Ooi on Jun 13, 2016 at 7:55 am

This is a very interesting article as it describes something I don’t normally hear people talk about, it’s not like any other long-haired or white-dressed spirit encounter. It’s scary how these beings would latch onto a person and use him/ her to perform negative actions to harm others. Now we see the importance of not engaging with spirits because if the karmic affinity is there, they can take over our body anytime.

  29. Doreen Teoh on Jun 12, 2016 at 11:59 pm

it is out of ignorance or not knowing that about this form of supernatural beings like “Shadow People” are fine for us to rely on them. When this forms appears or harms us, it is also own-self karma that causes this incident. So, if ones do encounter this experiences or is making contacts, building a relationship with this beings, it is very important to seek help, and family members that have anyone that tells you this kind of issue, please do listen to them, and help them to get out of this issue.

  30. Fong on Jun 12, 2016 at 5:54 pm

We get a lot of stories of different kind of supernatural beings in smaller towns which is assumed to be idle chatter to pass the evenings – a source of entertainment watching the frightened faces of kids.

Then there is the then famous Haw Par villa in Singapore with its graphic statues depicting Hell. That gave me another glimpse into the scary world. It’s when I started learning about Buddhism that I realized where these stories and depiction comes from.

Now, from the various articles by pastor David and Vinnie I see the different types of beings. There really is a lot to learn. It is good to know but better still if we know the precaution we can take. Knowing the remedies available is even better.

Most times, whenever I feel uneasy at any place I just chant Dorje SHugden mantra OM BENZA WIKI BITTANA SOHA. It helps a lot to calm my nerves. But then again I use the same mantra for a lot situations.

I guess, these stories are brought to us not just for a good night’s laugh. It is real, and we can take precaution and even apply remedies. Thanks, Pastor Shin for the links to the articles about Trakze and Sengdongma.

This is an interesting read as many of us have one way or another encountered these Shadow people before. I am not sure if they can be class as “spirits”? Because I’ve heard these being could be entities from a different realm coming into our world to cause harm. Their nature is harmful that is for sure.

My experience with a shadow entity was the one with glowing eyes, can’t be sure of the colour but definitely looked like the picture Vinnie posted up of a long haired figure with long limbs, glowing eyes and squatting. I saw this entity when I went camping with some friends in KKB. It can move extremely fast and it seem to have appeared from the dark depth of the forest and came crawling over to see us.

Another encounter of this similar being was with my late husband Justin who told me someone was trying to grab him from his leg to throw him out of the window and this was when he was conscious he said. The very next day we went to volunteer at Kechara Paradise (KP) SS2 outlet and suddenly Rinpoche decided to pay KP a visit and as if Rinpoche knew exactly what had happened to Justin, without anyone saying anything to Rinpoche, Rinpoche asked Justin if he had just recently experienced something negative and describe the being exactly like how the picture above looked like. A figure with long wavy like hair, all black and squatting trying to cause harm. I remembered Rinpoche said something like this was not a “spirit” but an entity from another realm/dimension. Then Rinpoche proceeded to do a “gako” or Vajrayogini protection ritual on Justin and those of us who was there. Rinpoche basically closed Justin’s chakras to prevent negative energies from entering and placed Vajrayogini’s wrathful protectress (dakinis) at all our chakras to protect each chakra which is a door way for these negative entity to enter us. After that Justin never experienced anything negative again. Thank goodness!

I guess at the end of the day if we have the karma to connect with them and experience them, we will surely cross path with them but most importantly is knowing how we can protect ourselves and not create anymore karma with these beings. Thank you Vinnie for yet another interesting creepy paranormal post that helps us understand the paranormal world more and how we can protect or prevent ourselves from experiencing their negative energies.

  32. Eddie Yee on Jun 12, 2016 at 12:32 am

Even today, there are many classes of spirits or pretas existing, as said in the teachings of our Rinpoche. By reciting the mantra of Mitgsema, Ganden Lha Gyema, Dorje Shugden etc., these spirits, though powerful as they are, cannot afflict us, bother us or harm us. Yes, unnecessarily we should not meddle or engage ourselves with any class of such spirits, as always cautioned by our Guru. As further advised, these spirits can trick people, pretend to be other dieties by saying good things, but actually trying to trick us in believing in them. Then they take advantage to possesing people, enter their bodies, make them say crazy things to harm themselves, and finally to make one to do harmful acts causing him or her to die. Yes, I too have seen such happening in the past! As fortunate practitioners of Kechara House and doing Dharma work everyday, and practising and doing pujas for others, and many other spiritual practices too, these lower realm beings will not like to get near to us if we do not encourage them. Best of all prevention is to keep ourselves away from them, have full faith in our spiritual practices and do our spiritual work well devotedly and have nothing to fear! Om Mani Padme Hung.

  33. JP on Jun 12, 2016 at 12:27 am

Thanks for the interesting research on Shadow People. I have had experiences with entities that are “shadow” like but they don’t wear a hat nor have red or yellow eyes. They are a black silhouette of a person. Some I can see clearly and some I can only see at the corner of my eye.

The one I could see clearly was climbing on the wall up to the ceiling. Similar to Spiderman. It didn’t do anything to me. Perhaps it was just trying to get my attention.

The ones that could only be seen at the corner of the eye are exactly what Vinnie wrote. Somehow they will never let us see them clearly.

  34. Stella Cheang on Jun 11, 2016 at 3:50 pm

Before reading this article by Vinnie, I always thought the dark shadow that I caught at the corner of my eyes during late nights or sometimes during twilight hours are just the effect of bad lightings. Little do I know these are actual beings that lurk in the dark, stand and watch their human victim from a corner. When they are being directly looked at, the Shadow People will avoid eye contact and will shift away and eventually disappear.

I find interesting the fact that Shadow People disappear when they are being looked at directly. As pointed out by Vinnie, it could indicate that the Shadow People are aware of their actions, which is negative in nature and want to create chaos when we are not paying attention. Thus when we pay attention to them, they are afraid their intentions will be known to us.

Since these beings could be sinister in nature, we should always be prepared to protect ourselves against their attack. One way is to use Juniper incense (we can get them from VajraSecrets), then recite this prayer and request the protector Dorje Shugden for protection. At the same time, use the smoke from the Juniper incense to clear the energy of the space around us. In the worst case if we come face-to-face with them, we can chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden (Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha), Sengdongma or Dukkar, seven times or more. Then blow the mantra onto these Shadow People to bless them and also as protection.

Thank you Rinpoche and Vinnie for this interesting article.

    Humbly, bowing down,
    Stella Cheang

I knew this topic would show up eventually. lol. They are very interesting paranormal entities to know about. They have been known to follow people from location to location. I’ve seen shows where people tell their experience with them, generally it’s never good in nature. Most paranormal groups and people who claim to be real psychics don’t even know how to get rid of them. They usually tell the family to move as there is a good chance they will remain at the location. There is still on going research. They are described to be the next closest thing to a demon here in the west, without them being an actual demon.

Still for something paranormal of this nature it’s best not to get involved with them on any level if possible. Thank you Vinnie Tan for sharing this topic :). It’s nice to be informed about different kinds of paranormal entities/different classifications. I know here in the West we only have three catagories for things like this, Spirits/ghosts,demons or angels. I fear we are far behind compared to the East because I know you have many more different classes of spirits and supernatural/paranormal entities etc (tsen,Gyalpo, rakshasa, yakshas, dakas/dakinies).

  36. Sofi on Jun 10, 2016 at 11:30 pm

An interesting article on Shadow People. I guess they may be those that you glimpse from the corner of your eyes and when you face it, there is nothing there. Usually we will think its our mind playings tricks. I had always thought them to be spirits of deceased people and was interesting to learn that they are not.

Being a Buddhist, we accept them as being a sentient beings within the realm of hungry ghost but I still find it amazing to learn the differences of the beings that exist there. This applies to the other realms too. So many new beings are being discovered now.

I do hope that your friend will swiftly be able to detach himself from his Shadow Person with his continued faith in Sengdongma pujas. I guess the increase attacks show that his practices are working as the entity is giving its all to hang on and knows that the time is coming when he has to go.

Thank you Vinnie for this informative article. Now I may just be more conscious to keep an eye out for the shadows. Its time for more OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA.

King Trisong Detsen (740-798) was the second of the Three Dharma Kings of Tibet He played a pivotal role in the introduction of Buddhism to Tibet and the establishment of the Nyingma. He believed to be an emanation of the bodhisattva Manjushri, that built Samye Monastery the first monastery . King Trisong Detsen aimed to revitalize Tibetan Buddhism so much so arranged a debate known as the Council of Lhasa. The Council of Lhasa, at Samye, was a famous debate, between the Chinese Buddhist monk Moheyan and the Indian Buddhist master Kamalashila. It is also known as the Great Debate, this debate lasted for 2 years. An interesting story behind this long and rancorous debate. The Council of Lhasa is an important event in Tibetan history and shaped the practice of Buddhism in Tibet up until today.

Coming across this post of suspended coffees truly had me wonder if in Malaysia will come up with this compassionate concept. A suspended coffee is a great way to pay forward for a coffee meant for someone else who cannot afford a warm beverage. Kindness can come in many forms including the purchase of a suspended coffee,
a very good concept indeed. This is a tradition that comes from Naples, Italy, dated in the 20th century. Buying a cup of coffee for a stranger , who needed it especially during cold nights. A simple act of kindness can change someone’s life. To date, many countries in US and Europe have started these compassion concept and had in fact inspired more. Hopefully one day this will happen in Malaysia .

n the remote mountain highlands of eastern Tibet, there exists a unique lineage of female spiritual practitioners at Gebchak Gonpa. A nunnery of more than 350 from all the Tibetan schools of Buddhism came to study and practice Dharma, upholding rigorous meditation and yoga practices. Gebchak’s yogini nuns are famed for their accomplishments in profound yogas and meditation. These women have devoted their entire lives to practicing the Dharma. Interesting read of those Gebchak’s yogini nuns lives, as stated in the post.
Sadly, during the cultural revolution the Gebchak Gonpa was destroyed and the remaining nuns were dispersed. Yet many of them continue preserving their unique female yogic tradition who had survived the Cultural Revolution. Today, new generations of nuns and lamas are preserving Gebchak’s practice lineage rebuilt and re-established Gebchak Gonpa, despite extreme physical hardships.

Interesting biography of a great Lama Zanabazar was a renowned painter, sculptor, architect and costume designer. He was known as“Michelangelo of Asia”, for his artistic skills which were matched by his literary prowess as a Buddhist scholar, linguist and poet. Zanabazar as a historical figure played an important role in propagating Buddhism in Mongolia. He had established Mongolian unique cultural identity. Zanabazar was the first Bogd Gegeen or high-saint-of-mongolia or supreme spiritual authority, the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in Outer Mongolia. He is believed to be a Geluk protagonist whose alliance with the Dalai and Panchen Lamas was crucial to the dissemination of Buddhism in Khalkha Mongolia. Interesting read with all the rare pictures shared.

One of the underrated landmarks in Macau. It is believed that when this statue is built, Macau has become more prosperous, peaceful and economically better. Many locals and tourist visited this beautiful Statue and it’s a popular spot where they will walk along the sea watching sunset. Merely by looking at this Statue is a blessing. Beautiful Yonghe Temple in Beijing, China known to some locals as the‘Palace of Peace and Harmony Lama Temple’ has three world-record masterpieces. This temple is a temple and monastery of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism built during the reign of Emperor Kang Xi (1694). Very impressive buildings and a great insight into Chinese Buddhist temples with 300 years of history . The building and artwork of the temple is a combination of Han Chinese and Tibetan styles.
Looking at the restoration and conservation work of the Lama Tsongkhapa Statue in Yong He Gong is not easy after all. Thanks to Liu Yuming,77, restoration masters of China’s Cultural Relics. He had done a good job helping to preserve those rare cultural relics left in China. It is indeed a uphill task that needs a lot of patience , skill, delicate , and love . Interesting read even though it an old post. Would love to see this master piece of Lama Tsongkhapa Statue one day .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing

Sometimes a single image can speak much louder than words. It’s very painful to see the abused and made to suffer of a Monkey and Child.

It is really sad to discover how many animals sacrificed for fulfilling our taste buds. and not only sacrificing their life.

Why don’t we try to eat more vegetables instead of eating more animals. Vegetables are healthy too, you know! And do you also know that being vegetarian or vegan will not only make you become healthier, it will also make you feel more energetic.

A legendary figure of Buddhism in Buryatia was Lubsan Samdan Tsydenov, charismatic Buddhist master and visionary and national hero, who had spread the Tantric Buddhist tradition. Interesting read of this forgotten story of Lubsan Samdan Tsydenov, a monk who briefly ruled as a dharma king. He amazingly created a nonviolence Buddhist kingdom who protected thousands of women, children, and men at that time. In 1920’s Soviet government considered Lubsan Samdan Tsydenov to be rebels and Traditional Buryat culture was erased since then. Buddhist monasteries in Buryatia were destroyed and many followers were murdered. He was well remembered as a true Dharma King and a national hero. Interesting read of a Great Lama.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

We came to this world with nothing and leaving with nothing. There nothings that belongs to us. Whatever we own is temporary on loan only, so we should be glad in this life we are in human form. We should appreciate what we have at this moment, , doing , learning Dharma and practicing Dharma for a good and meaningful cause. Transforming our mind and benefiting others instead of ourselves.
What Rinpoche had said and explained , very true indeed … we don’t own our body. Well use our body for the greater good of others. Reading the transcript by Tsem Rinpoche tells us more understanding .
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound teachings.

Thank you for the wonderful sharing, it’s truly amazing. Each one of these statues is special and drool-worthy, and they have rightly signified the place where they stand today.

Even when we don’t have the opportunity too witness those beautiful Buddha Statues, yet we are blessed merely by looking at it.

Reading this article again, truly feeling sorry those refugees in Netherlands. Staying in another country far away from homeland is already sad. They need to start from scratch, could imagine their situation living in a foreign facing a lot of hinders such languages, cultures and so forth. The sad state of refugees living in Netherlands is really bad. The Netherlands has had a reputation as a humanitarian haven, with refugees and immigrants as the situation in their country isn’t safe enough. But entering as refugees they ended up living in empty offices, as room . The government authorities failed to provide basic amenities for those rejected ones who have not or cannot leave the country. The refugees are stuck in a system, were call as an illegal immigrant. They wandered in the streets of Amsterdam, moving from one place to another left in the cold winter. Lucky enough they have volunteers helping them supplying blankets , foods for them. Hopefully the authorities could do more to help those refugees out there and the situation right now has improved.
Thank you Melissa for sharing this .

Being generous also makes us feel better about ourselves. Generosity is both a natural confidence builder and a natural repellent of self-hatred. By focusing on what we are giving rather than on what we are receiving. Acts of generosity, such as giving our time, talent or resources, and expecting nothing in return, have been proven to be good for our health. Generous individuals are personally more fulfilled, happier and more peaceful within themselves. Enrich our life and that of others by practicing generosity. That’s what I consider true generosity without anything in return.
Thank you Rinpoche and Datuk May for this sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

ray asked: Dear Pastors, Thank you for clearing my doubts previously about purification practices. Today i have a question about reciting praises to buddhas, why do we recite praises and how does reciting praises to buddhas like Tara, Dorje shugden etc. help and benefit us? Because ive seen certain prayer texts to mother tara which i think is referring to the 21 tara praises stating that : ~If this prayer is recited two, three, or seven times, It will pacify all the sufferings of torments Caused by spirits, fevers, and poisons, And by other beings as well. If you wish for a child, you will get a child; If you wish for wealth, you will receive wealth. All your wishes will be fulfilled And all obstacles pacified.~ Will reciting praises to buddhas also be able to fulfill our wishes as stated? Thank you very much.

Eden asked: Dear Pastors, How are all of you doing? I have a few questions here. I will be very grateful if you can answer them. Thank you. 1) If we are here because of our previous life karma, previous previous karma and so on. May i know when does all of this started? How does this chain of karma started? Im sure we all had our 1st life and everything had a beginning to it. 2) I am currently facing some problem over my career pathway, are there any practices and mantras that I can do to request for guidance?
pastor answered: Dear Eden, Thank you for your questions. 1. Buddhism does not believe in a 1st life, and the reason being is the Buddhist view of time. Most people think of time and existence as linear. It has a definitive starting point and a certain end point. But Buddhism views time as a cyclic. Hence, our universe as we understand it, will at one point cease to exist, and then a new universe will come into existence. However, even though our current universe will end, due to the force of karma and reincarnation, we will take rebirth into the new universe and have many rebirths there. So in Buddhism we say that we have had "countless" rebirths, as you would never be able to count how many lifetimes you have had. This cycle is vicious and leads us to take rebirth endlessly. The only way to stop this cycle is to transcend it altogether, which is the state of Buddhahood, in which you are completely liberated from the cycle, known as "samsara". Also the way in which we think about karma is not linear either. It is not one for one. By this I mean, if you do one negative action, it is not that you will experience only one negative result. You will actually experience many negative results, with differing levels of severity until the karma is exhausted. How you respond to the negative results can lead to either more negative karma, or positive karma. Hence, the law of karma according to the Buddhist view point is much more nuanced then the general understanding of karma that people have these days. The Buddha explained this process in a teaching known as the 12 Links of Dependent Origination, which is quite complex. If you want to learn more about this teaching, H.E. Tsem Rinpoche gave a very profound teaching on it here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/teaching-on-the-twelve-links-of-dependent-origination.html Hence, according to Buddhism, the understand of time is a never-ending cycle in which universes are created, destroyed and created again due to the power of karma. Since it is a cycle, there is no "beginning" or "1st life" for sentient beings. 2. In regards to your career pathway, I would suggest you engage in the combined practice of Lama Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugden. We have heard of many people who are either stuck in their career or who need to find good jobs, succeed in the their goals after engaging in this practice with a sincere motivation. There is a book available regarding the practice here: https://www.vajrasecrets.com/the-dorje-shugden-handbook. We also have an entire section of this website dedicated to various aspects of the practice, including history, other prayers, etc. (https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/category/dorje-shugden). I hope this helps. Let us know if we can help in any other way.

Lara asked: Hello pastors, I have a family member suffering from depression right now. May I know how I can help him to overcome this? Thank you.
pastor answered: Dear Lara, I'm sorry to hear that your family member is going through this. When someone is going through such a difficult time, H.E. Tsem Rinpoche has advised that the person themselves seek qualified medical help as well as engage in the practice of Lama Tsongkhapa, which is well-known to help overcome things like depression. From your side you should be as supportive as possible. Take the time to understand what your family member is going through, and in which ways you can support them to overcome their depression and heal. You can watch a fantastic teaching about the practice of Lama Tsongkha here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/sayonara-to-depression.html. The prayer text for the practice can be found here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/prayers-and-sadhanas/sadhana-prayers.html#19 However, sometimes family members may not be open to the engaging in the practice themselves. In that case, you can engage in the practice yourself and dedicate the merits for the family member to heal, but this will not be as effective as the family member doing the practice themselves. Another thing that you can do, it to make abundant offerings or engage in virtuous activities like as helping the less fortunate, and dedicating the merits from those activities to your family member. You can also have pujas sponsored for your family member. The following two pujas would be excellent: Medicine Buddha Puja - which is good for healing, both physical and mental (https://www.vajrasecrets.com/medicine-buddha-puja-fund) Dorje Shugden Puja - to remove obstacles for a swift recovery (https://www.vajrasecrets.com/dorje-shugden-wishfulfilling-puja-fund) These are the various methods in which you can help. You can do just one or a combination of the methods mentioned to generate as much positive energy and merit as possible for your family member. I hope this helps.

ray asked: hi pastor i have a question regarding purification practices because ive been having some doubts now, is it true that some people say engaging in purification practices bad things would then happen to the practitioner after that? be it being sick or facing obstacles coming after that.
pastor answered: Dear Ray, Thank you for your question. When we engage in purification practices, what we are purifying is our negative karma. If you know about karma, you know that eventually you will need to experience your karma, be this negative or positive. When you experience your negative karma, then you experience negative situations. This could be something major, like having an accident, to something very minor such as feeling bad if say a loved one says something in a way that you perceive as being negative. Any experience you have that you perceive as negative, is a manifestation of your negative karma. During purification practices, through your own effort of invoking upon the enlightened beings and practice of the Four Opponent Powers, you are able to purify this negative karma. However, for a negative karma to be fully exhausted, you need to experience it. Say you have a karma to get into an accident, if you don't purify and exhaust it, then you will need to suffer from it 100%. This could mean getting into a car accident which is very severe and you are hurt badly. If you engage in purification practices then you can purify, let's say 99% of the karma. But for it to be exhausted fully, you still need to experience it. In this case, maybe you do get into an accident. Since you have purified most of the karma, your car only bumps into another car very softly. You don't even feel it, the person in the other car doesn't feel it and you car is not damaged at all. This is the reason why some people say if you engage in purification practices, bad things will happen. And because of that people are put off doing purification practices. This is wrong thinking because if you do experience negative situations when engaged in purification practices, this could be because: a) What you experienced is actually the purified karma, rather than the full force of the karma. In this case you should rejoice that through your effort of engaging in the practice, you didn't experience something much worse. b) It could just simply be the manifestation of a karma that wasn't purified. This means, you would have had to go through this experience anyway. c) Because you are engaged in purification practices, you are thinking of karma a lot. Therefore, when such experiences occur then you attribute it to karma, and then think it is linked to your purification practice. Then you believe that doing purification practices is bad because you have to suffer from such experiences. This is wrong thinking. Perhaps even if you were not doing purification practices, then you would still experience the situation, but you wouldn't actually think anything of it. You would just go about the rest of your day as usual. That being said, when you are doing purification practices, there comes a point were certain negative karma is so weak that you need to experience it for it to be exhausted completely. This can and does manifest as negative situations, such as minor illnesses, or even accidents, etc. However, the point to remember is the karma causing these situations have been purified so they are very mild compared to their full form. These negative situations can also be purified/exhausted in dreams, etc. Another way they can be purified is having mental disturbances or emotional ups and downs when actually doing the purification practices. In essence, you will need to feel the effects of your negative karma in some form or another, so better that you experience it in a very mild form right? This is what purification practices helps you to do. Purification practices are not something to be scared of. In fact, you should rejoice when engaged in purification practices. On a more deeper level, without some form of purification practice it is hard to understand higher aspects of the Dharma. Your negative karma will block you from being able to understand the Dharma and then internalise it. That is why purification practices are emphasised within each and every tradition and are a prerequisite for higher teaching such as tantra. The benefits of purification practices (such as enabling you to exhaust your negative karma in a very mild form, and preparing your mind for higher teachings) outweighs having to experience a very small negative situation. Therefore think about the benefits of purification practice and contemplate on it. This will help you to develop faith in them and get rid of any doubts or fears that you may have. I hope this helps.

vikas baluni asked: abut growth of my business
pastor answered: Dear Vikas Baluni, I am unclear as to the actually meaning of your question but I believe you are asking how to increase and grow your business. According to Buddhism, everything that we go through in life is due to karma, this includes both the good things and the bad things. Therefore, for your business to grow and do well depends on your good karma. Only one type of energy can overcome karma and is always good for your, and that is what we call merit or punya (in sanskrit). So in order to have merit for your business to do well, you have to take actions that generate merit. The main of these is to transform your mind to become a more compassionate and wiser person, to help others less fortunate, to engage in pujas and other such virtuous activities. There are certain deity practices that are well-known in Buddhism to help increase the energies of wealth and success in our lives. These can help your business to grow. Once such practice is that of Bhagawan Gyenze, you can click here to find out more: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/prayers-and-sadhanas/dorje-shugden-gyenze-to-increase-life-merits-and-wealth.html Bhagawan Gyenze will definitely help you to grow your business, if you have a good motivation. If you motivation is only about yourself, then your business will not grow that much. But if you have the motivation help others, then Bhagawan Gyenze will help you even more. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Jason asked: I have been practicing white dzambala and the bathing / water tormas for quite some time now. Recently I have been getting regular dreams where white dzambala appears and just smiles at me, or I dream that I am doing white dzambala chutor practice. I understand that when lama tsongkhapa got dreams of deities he thought that this was Mara acting up and paid no attention to it until his lama said something. My lama is currently on retreat and it is difficult to contact him. Please give me some advice on what is happening. I'm just some normal beginners smuck and I'm getting worried that this is a bad sign. When I wake up I feel at peace... But according to commentaries this could be Mara.
pastor answered: Dear Jason, Thank you for your question. I am really happy to hear that you are engaging in Dzambhala's practice. It's extremely beneficial. You are right that Lama Tsongkhapa ignored his dreams of deities, and viewed them as bad signs. But before jumping to conclusions, we must analyse the reasons why Lama Tsongkhapa ignored not only his dreams, also the visions of the deities he received. The reason that Lama Tsongkhapa did not consider it a positive sign is because as practitioners on the spiritual path, it is all too easy to get carried away with 'signs' or advice, visions, dreams from supposed deities. Sometimes if we 'analyse' them it can lead us in the wrong direction because of our mistaken understanding. Sometimes, other entities can also enter our dreams and tell us things that we believe, hence we start practising things that are not Dharmic in nature. Lama Tsongkhapa warned against such things, rather Lama Tsongkhapa said that we should rely on the Dharma teachings that are genuine and transmitted to us through an unbroken line through our lineage. Generally speaking however, these dreams you are having are literally just dreams, so there is nothing to worry about. One category of dreams we have are known as samsaric dreams. These arise from karma and karmic traces in the mind. This can also include emotions, memories, etc. The meaning we find in these dreams are imputed by the dreamer, and not inherent in the dream. This also applies to waking life. We impute meaning onto situations and circumstances, rather than the meaning being inherent to the circumstance. It is like reading a book. Words in the book are just marks on paper, however, because we use our sense of meaning, we make a meaning out of it. However, this is always open to interpretation. For example, if you tell your dream to two people, they can interpret the meaning very differently, even though you told them the exact same details. When we have dreams such as of our teacher, our practice, the Buddhas, etc., it is still more than likely to be just a samsaric dream. Because we have been engaging in sustained practice, or have imprints from previous lives, these can surface in our dreams hence we have dreams of Buddhas, our teachers, etc. There is nothing to worry about or to consider overly auspicious or a 'sign'. Just realise that you have had the dream, do not allow your thoughts to dwell on it, accept it and move on. However, do take note that you had these dreams and once your Guru is out of retreat, please consult your Guru and inform him/her of these occurances and seek your Guru's advice if any. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Jason asked: I white dzambhala is a wealth deity but can he also act as a dharma protector?
pastor answered: Dear Jason, Thank you for your question. The practice of Dzambhala is actually a Yidam practice, this means that Dzambhala is a meditational deity. When you engage in his practice, as well as bestowing wealth, through his practice you also develop qualities that help you progress towards enlightenment. In the case of Dzambhala, the primary quality he helps you develop is actually generosity, which is one of the Six Perfections. Therefore, although he is known as a wealth deity, he is much, much more than that. When you engage in his practice, you are actually developing virtuous qualities in your mindstream. The function of Dharma Protectors however is to remove obstacles and to create conducive conditions so that you can transform your mind. Hence, the function of a meditational deity and a Dharma Protector is different. That being said, when you engage in Dzambhala's practice properly, you do gain wealth. Generally, we only consider this wealth to be external wealth, but Dzambhala's practice is more than that, because through his practice you gain internal wealth which are virtuous qualities. Due to the fact his practice also brings material wealth, he is known as a wealth deity. When you practice any meditational deity, you will gain some physical benefit as well, which can seem to mirror the effect of Dharma Protectors, but their function is very different. Dzambhala for example grants material wealth, but his actually function is to increase inner wealth. Another example would be Medicine Buddha, outward he heals our physical body, but inwardly he also helps to heal our minds and develop qualities such as compassion. Dharma Protectors can also help to heal our body, but for real internal change, we need to rely on a meditational deity. I hope this answer helps.

ray asked: Dear pastors, i have a question regarding vajra and bells. can one use them if they do not have any sort of initiation or whatsoever?
pastor answered: Dear Ray, Thank you for your question. You are right that traditionally vajras and bells are only used after receiving initiation. However, H.E. Tsem Rinpoche recommended learning how to use the vajra and bell, as a means of creating the causes to receive initiation in the future. That said, there are many dos and don'ts related to using the vajra and bell. You can learn not only how to use them, but also vajra and bell etiquette from one of Kechara's Pastors. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Sandra asked: Respected pastors, Do you recommend doing Tsem Rinpoche’s guru yoga as part of daily Sadhana? I am sure I read on the article for the name retreat that it could be done as daily prayers but now I can’t see that sentence? Thank you.
pastor answered: Dear Sandra, Yes of course, you may include Tsem Rinpoche's Guru Yoga as part of your daily sadhana if you wish. This creates a very strong bond with Tsem Rinpoche. If you are following the Diamond Path sadhana (https://www.vajrasecrets.com/diamond-path), you insert the Guru Yoga after you have completed the Gaden Lhagyama (Guru Yoga of Lama Tsongkhapa). Alternative, if you are using a different prayer text, you insert the Guru Yoga after Gaden Lhagyama, or before any deity prayers that you do such as Manjushri, Tara, etc. After you complete the deity practice section of your sadhana, you continue on to your Dharma protector practice, and finish with your completion dedication. I hope this helps. Do let us know if this is not clear. Thanks.

Sandra asked: Respected pastors, Can a lay person work towards the preliminary practices by accumulating daily ? Many thanks.
pastor answered: Dear Sandra, Yes, of course. Anyone can engage in the preliminary practices, you don't have to be ordained in order to do so. However for one's practice to be considered a full preliminary practice, you need to do 100,000 repetitions of whichever practice you are engaged in without break. That means you must engage in at least one session a day, until the count is completed. 10% of the count is also added on top, to make up for any unintentional mistakes. So the figure would actually be 110,000. If you skip a day, that means you have broken your preliminary retreat. If this occurs you can still dedicate the practice you have done so far, and you will still benefit from the merit generated and the purification of negative karma from the practice, but it is not counted as a full preliminary practice. Also you must adhere to the retreat procedures for the duration of the time it takes you to complete the particular preliminary practice. For example, an altar with daily offerings, retreat seat with swastika, refraining from eating black foods, etc. This may not be convenient for most people in our day and age. So what you can do is to spend a certain amount of time accumulating a specific figure, for example 10,000 repetitions of a particular practice. Seal the practice at the end with a strong dedication, like the King of Prayers. Later on, you can repeat the procedure more times until you complete 100,000. This method was given by H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for modern-day practitioners who do not have the time to complete 100,000 in one go. While it technically does not constitute a full preliminary retreat, you still gain immense merits and purification from engaging in the practice, even if spaced out. As Rinpoche said, it's better for you to do mini preliminary retreats than not doing any of the preliminary practices whatsoever. That being said, if you do have the ability to do a full preliminary retreat and it will not negatively impact you, such as create financial difficulties or strain familial relationships, then of course go ahead! To have the sincere wish to engage in any Dharma practice is wonderful. You can read more about the individual preliminary practices here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/preliminary-practice.html You can watch a short teaching on the preliminary practices by H.E. Tsem Rinpoche here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/cosmic-tantra.html

Sandra asked: Dear respected pastors, what are dreams? Do dreams have significance? Are they simply images the mind views at night - do they resemble the dreamer's state of mind? Thank you for all your replies :) :)
pastor answered: Dear Sandra, Hello. Nice to see you back here. On the normal level, both waking and dream states are both marred by our delusions. The teachings tell us that this deluded state continues through all our experiences, whether during the dreaming or waking states. The way to overcome this is to "wake up" from our delusions, or reach enlightenment. Normally when people think of dreams, they do so in psychological terms and so focus on the content of the dream. When we investigate the nature of the dream itself, we begin to investigate something deeper, the processes that underlies the whole of our existence. Understand this propels you further along the spiritual journey towards enlightenment. We have many dreams during one night of sleep, and may or may not consciously remember then when we wake up. In terms of content, dreams can be used to work through psychological issues or can indicate certain issues and overcoming them (as is common within Western psychological practices). In Tibetan Buddhism, dreams can be used for much more. In the advanced practices, one can transform ordinary dreams to further one's spiritual journey. This is not only in terms of working through psychological issues, but in terms of meditation and practice as well. Generally, there are three types of dreams as described below. Most of us only experience the first type, unless we progress on the spiritual path. 1. Samsaric dreams: these arise from karma and karmic traces in the mind. This can also include emotions, memories, etc. The meaning we find in these dreams are imputed by the dreamer, and not inherent in the dream. This also applies to waking life. We impute meaning onto situations and circumstances, rather than the meaning being inherent to the circumstance. It is like reading a book. Words in the book are just marks on paper, however, because we use our sense of meaning, we take a meaning out of it. However, this is always open to interpretation. For example, if you tell your dream to two people, they can interpret the meaning very differently, even though you told them the exact same details. 2. Clarity dreams: These dreams occur when you are fairly progressed in meditational practices and can carry this into the dream state. These dreams arise not from the emotions, or memories, etc., but from more subtler forms of karma and delusions. However, just like in waking mediational practice, you are not affected by the images or thoughts that appear to you. 3. Clear Light dreams: In the advanced tantric practices, there are teachings called dream yoga. The object of these is to achieve the clear light dreams, which are very difficult to achieve and take years and years of intense practice. The most important clear light mind that arises is actually at the time of our death, if we are trained enough in this very subtle state, we can actually control where we take rebirth. If we are more experienced in this state, then we can actually use it to meditate on the teachings and achieve enlightenment. Clear light dreams are a "lesser" type of clear light mind, that helps practitioners prepare for the time of death. When we have an auspicious dream such as of our teacher, our practice, the Buddhas, etc., even though this is auspicious, it is still more than likely to be just a samsaric dream. There are instances however, when the enlightened beings and Dharma protectors will send practitioners dreams to help with their practice or as methods of divination. Tsem Rinpoche once told us of a very powerful Nyingma lama known for his divination abilities. Students would ask him a question, then he would take a nap, and receive divination advice in this dreams, which he would then relay to his students. This lama was well-known for this ability because his dream divinations were extremely accurate. As I am sure you can tell, the scope of dreams with the Buddhist context is very vast and I will not be able to cover everything here. However, I hope that what I have written helps your understanding. Thank you.

Some of the food items given include rice, noodles, cooking oil and biscuits; in total, we gave 726kg of food to these beneficiaries from the underprivileged class. We are glad to have been able to contribute, especially to families with children and in poor living conditions. We wish to thank GSS for alerting us about those in need, and we look forward to extending more support in the future together with this not-for-profit organization doing good work. - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

In an urgent effort to provide food and necessities to the poverty-stricken in Bentong and rural areas of Pahang, we are launching Food Bank Bentong. With your support, Food Bank Bentong would be able to feed 500 families totaling 2,300 people on a regular basis, giving them a chance to enjoy a basic sense of security we consider a human right. - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

The global pandemic hasn't been easy for all of us. Some find it diffucult to find a job to support the family. Despite that, we are still delivering basic food pack to our recipients nationwide. Thank you to our volunteers, donors, and sponsors. Without your support, we would be unable to reach out to many families. Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

Thanks to the effort of our outstation team, we were able to mobilise food provisions to 600 families living in Kelantan, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor during the Raya period with each of these families receiving RM200 worth of provisions. Adding onto the current 368 families in Klang Valley, a total of 968 families were benefitted from this. More photos taken from our "Hari Raya Hampers" distribution this week. Making sure everyone of our clients have something to be cheerful about. Apart from food, daily used items such as hygiene products, kitchen utensils, assorted fabric items, stationary items and toys were also included into our hamper bags making it extra heavier this month! Food items alone were about 35kg per family! Taking this opportunity to wish everyone of our Muslim volunteers, friends, supporters and clients a Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Maaf Zahir Batin. No doubt this year's celebration will be very different but appreciate everyone is safe and protected from the pandemic. We are in this together and let's work to fight this pandemic together! Thanking all sponsors and donors for the generous support enabling us to continue serve the needy with food, love and care. Big shoutout too to our wonderful team which already depleted by our very own strict SOP. All of you who worked tirelessly behind the s

Amongst all pujas, the fire puja is considered the king of all Pujas. It is the most powerful of all pujas within Tibetan Buddhism and its purpose is basically to remove all obstacles and its stains to enlightenment.
