The Dragon and the Five Elements

The Dragon: A Wood Sign

The Dragon sign is of the Wood element. Generally, Wood bestows an expansive, open characteristic to people born with this element. They find it easy to get along well with others, especially in a group context and bring good, energising vibes to any situation. They are compassionate people, who look for ways to help others and bring justice.

.

The Metal Dragon – 1940, 2000

The Metal Dragon is the most strong-willed among all Dragons. These Dragons possess all the qualities to achieve great success: enthusiasm, unwavering confidence and intense determination.

The Metal element only serves to strengthen the already powerful Dragon. They are born leaders who are very expressive, and at times may be unknowingly critical. They are unfazed by challenges and will never give failure a thought. Intensely driven to accomplish big things in life, they have a rigid “zero-tolerance” rule for laziness and playfulness, which applies to themselves and others.

Despite the fact that they are whole-heartedly content on working on their own, they will attract a legion of followers. They have the courage of a general leading his army into war, and hence followers naturally feel convinced with every word the Metal Dragon utters. After all, with a Metal Dragon, victorious success is the only option.

Their words can either make it or break it. They are able to persuade non-believers into passionate fighters. However, they will not fare well in situations which require some level of diplomatic skills. Disagree with what he has to say? He’ll march off with his head up on his own solitary way. Tough and bright, they will compete with all their might!

Life Lessons:

The Metal Dragon’s intention and speech may at times conflict with each other. He says what he means and means what he says – but it may not necessarily be words that are kind or constructive. Being consciously aware of the feelings of those around him will help him create fewer enemies.

.

The Water Dragon – 1952, 2012

The calmness and coolness of Water pacifies the naturally aggressive Dragon. This attribute will provide the Dragon with clarity and balance making them good negotiators and diplomats. Unlike the Fire Dragon, they are able to take time out to think and plan their next move wisely.

The secret to their success lays in their ability to be humorous when necessary, hardworking when necessary and to bite their tongue when necessary. They are able to control their emotions and thoughts providing them the composure and stability the other Dragons lack.

Passionate, opportunistic and progressive, they will not feel defeated even when they fall flat on the ground or if a door is slammed in their face. To them, it’s part of the growing process that everyone must go through – they are no different so there is nothing to be ashamed of!

They believe in a slow-and-steady approach, as opposed to the Metal Dragon who charges towards a goal. They are patient enough to know that good things come to those who wait. Don’t mistake their patience for inertness or passiveness. Just remember, who won the race: the rabbit or the tortoise?

The Water element will also make him expansive, open and gentle with others. The Water Dragon enjoys company, cooperativeness and sharing.

Life Lessons:

They are never reluctant to share their ideas with others but by their openness, they have the tendency to over-stretch themselves. They will need to set their limits and not spread themselves too thin.

.

The Wood Dragon – 1904, 1964, 2024

The Wood Dragon is characterized by his uncanny ability to attract fortune and luck in spite of his often peculiar choices. Wood Dragons possess a natural curiosity towards everything and are unafraid to explore the unexplored. They have the fearlessness of an imperial Dragon and the ego of Mother Teresa.

Unaffected by what others say, coupled with their creativeness and innovativeness, they have what it takes to be the revolutionary developers necessary for society’s growth.  They are able to generate a dominating force within anything they set their minds to. They are original, innovative thinkers and doers – they enjoy intellectual stimulation more than to strive for corporate success. Success to them falls not within society’s definition; they may be successful in life, but perhaps not in their career.

They are non-confrontational and it is uncommon for the Wood Dragon to be on anyone’s hate list. Although they are unaffected by what others say, they will avoid stepping on anyone’s toes – why cause trouble when harmony is a viable option? However, his naturally curious nature will also mean that he has a tendency to overanalyse things to a point that exasperates everyone else around him. Don’t forget that he is still a Dragon and has a naturally large ego that must always look out for itself and what will be most advantageous to him.

Life Lessons:

The Wood Dragon’s differing perspective on life will take them down an unpredictable path so they need to be more open to the advice and opinions of others. Before embarking in a particular direction, they may want to consider their long-term priorities: is money or passion more important?

.

The Fire Dragon – 1916, 1976

The Fire element strengthens the naturally fiery Dragon. They breathe power and ambition, and are unsurprisingly the most competitive of all Dragons. They have intense energy and place high expectations in all areas of their life: love, career, self-development etc.

As self-cultivated perfectionists, they become an unstoppable force due to their high intelligence. They have the Midas Touch and will succeed in whatever they do. If they choose to be, they have the potential to become great leaders. This is especially so if they are able to subdue their temper and energy-exhausting pace. Others may mistake their overzealous and powerful approach towards leadership to be dictator-like! The Fire Dragon demands as much from others as he demands from himself. Their emotions have a tendency to control their actions, and at times they may react recklessly causing them to accumulate plenty to regret.

However, although they may shoot fire at others, they in actual fact place great care towards others’ well-being. They will be the first to donate towards a charitable cause and the first to uncover the truth on behalf of the wrongly accused.

With their vibrant charisma and larger-than-life personality, it’s no doubt that most Fire Dragons become celebrities, e.g. Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Renolds and Alicia Silverstone, to name a few.

Life Lessons:

The Fire Dragon must learn to curb both his impulsiveness and tendency to rely only on his own judgment. He needs to understand that powerful as he is, not everyone can match his might. He could learn to be more patient, forgiving and open to hearing what others have to say before reacting on a whim.

.

The Earth Dragon – 1928, 1988

The Earth element allows the Dragon to be more grounded, level-headed and stable. Their friendships are long-term commitments, and they tend to be more sociable than other Dragons. However, despite the fact that they are naturally liked by everyone – peers and teachers, colleagues and employers – they have the tendency to remain impersonal, mostly because they are more concerned with creating realistic, practical outcomes than indulging in fanciful ideas.

Their innate talents can be developed and enhanced due to their patient and hardworking nature. As self-motivators, they constantly have the need for personal improvement even if the external world does not call for it. This causes them to be contemplators, who like to spend plenty of time in introspection.

Their need for logic and common sense sees many Earth Dragons maturing into morally-sound and well-rounded individuals. They have clear objectives in life that are realized due to their business acumen, flexibility and creativity. With their reasonable, level-headed approach to goals and their naturally generous nature, they are able to generate wealth as easily as they are able to obtain support for their work. Then, once they have what they need, they have the skill of churning everything to its greatest potential. This Dragon is especially resourceful and broad-thinking, producing benefits for the greater good.

It’s not unusual for Earth Dragons to receive accolades within their profession, e.g. Andy Warhol, Che Guevara, Rihanna and Adele to name a few.

Life Lessons:

The Earth Dragon is quick to snap back when their integrity and dignity are criticised. Disembarking from their high horses would help create more admirers and long-term support, which the Earth Dragon secretly desires. He also tends to overspend on many reckless, impulse buys. Curbing his expenditure will create less waste and build more financial stability.

I wish I was the lucky soul Dragons are supposed to be! Even a small powerball would make me a very happy person indeed!!! Yes I am usually the non-confrontational one but if I’m mad enough I take care of it in a passive aggressive way. I have a lot of Taurus and more than a few dragons around me so I guess birds of a feather eh? I know for a fact the stuff about the dog and the dragon can’t stand each other is true, most dog people I know are not considered close friends and a water dog friend of mine married an earth dragon and it only lasted a couple of years. I am now involved with an earth rooster who acts a lot more like a metal rooster (but the sign is metal so no surprise really). I do not live my life by the horoscope but I always find it amusing at just how many nails get hit on the head on a regular basis. I have always liked dragons even before I found out that I is one. Thanks for the great site.

I find that true about a lot of dragons that they are charismatic and seem to have good luck. It’s not the case with me though! Also description here doesn’t match very well with myself. I must be the odd one. haha

Thank you for the kind reminder. It came at the right time for me to look back on to my thoughts and action.I must practice mindfulness and respect towards others.I must use my inborn abilities to help others to create harmony and progress.

I am a fire dragon for Chinese and a water dragon for Western. Some of it are quite accurate because there are some facts which I find not what I am. It is true about the forgiving and channelling my energy into something positive which I rather choose positive as I know negative has done nothing for me except being bitter and sad. The zodiacs are really interesting though because we get to know a bit more of other people we meet.

  5. Wan Wai Meng on Sep 18, 2011 at 10:45 am

Such a powerful and resourceful sign hehe. They love being flattered hehe it seems their main Achilles heel. They have tonnes of resources and very resourceful in getting information etc. I would love to work with dragons! And among my colleagues their is an Earth Dragon.

  6. Cynthia on Sep 16, 2011 at 5:39 am

My chinese zodiac is Fire Dragon and my western zodiac is Aries which is a fire sign. Sounds like I am double fiery. Astrology has been a great interest of mine since young. Maybe because I like to know and learn more about myself just as many other people. Thank you for such comprehensive information on the website for me to reflect my good or bad qualities. I can see clearer now which area I need to work on. I also like reading other people’s horoscopes to see if it matches their qualities and to see how accurate of astrology is. Helps me understand better on how to deal with someone.

The heartbreak of grief is the hardest. The death of a loved one who was a meaningful part of our life can absolutely lead to significant shifts. Those people in deep sorrow at the loss of a loved one need mental support and a lift up. Having Rinpoche blessing the mind of the deceased and let them have a …good rebirth is really beautiful indeed. That’s the time the family of the departed needs most the company of friends and so forth. The behind scenes of Rinpoche did was really touching not only the Dharma teachings, Rinpoche will go all the way to help the deceased family, spending every minute of every day thinking, working and acting for the benefit of all around him and many of whom he hardly knows.
Thank you Seng PIow for sharing the look behind the scenes of what Rinpoche does.

Meditation has been shown to have mental benefits, such as improved concentration, happiness, memory, self-control, academic performance and more to go. Even researchers found that meditation may have other health benefits as well, including improved metabolism, heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure .Consistent practice over the long-term can boost our empathy, resilience and compassion too. Having just ten minutes is good enough for us all and powerful.
Its good to do death meditation when we still have the time now. Visualizing our bodies actually decaying and on death will be good. It is a good practice to do so before the time is up.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful teachings.

Tibetan sacred dance, Tibetans referred to as a journey into the religious and folk traditions. Tibetan culture of oracular trance has a great significance as them, where the Tibetans will seek divine help and blessing. Tibet was one of the few places where traditions continued virtually untouched and unspoilt. They do believe the spirits descend from the mountains and enter the bodies of mediums who have inherited the role, celebrated in all the villages. On that day the villagers will dressed up colourfully to welcome the Mountain Gods and join in the dances as well.
Reading this interesting article tells us more the Tibetans do practice spirit worship centuries ago, so as the Tibetan oracles been practice . The Tibetan Leadership believes that Dorje Shugden is a spirit , hence why not they ban all these mountain gods spirit worship too. Dorje Shugden is definitely not a spirit but a Dharma Protector bound by oath. Dorje Shugden is being used as a scapegoat by the Tibetan Leaderships for their own agenda.
Thank you Rinpoche, for this insightful sharing.

A beautiful story of how Pastor Antoinette Kass came all the way to be in Malaysia. She is from Luxembourg meeting H E Tsem Rinpoche in 2011, learning Dharma online from Youtube, blog, Facebook in search of spirituality. Later in 2015 finally she left her comfort zone to be ordained as a Buddhist pastor . Pastor Antoinette’s spiritual journey is an inspiration to many of us. With her determination and courage she found her way here . Wish her the best .
Thank you Pastor Seng Piow for this sharing.

I am blessed to see the amazing and best 10 meditation retreats in the world. I believe it is such because of its rich and long history with pure spiritual practice and way of life, culture and religion.

Traditionally all retreats has a beautiful landscape and quiet environment for anyone to have more freedom, peace and happiness in our daily life. It is also a chance to nurture our inner growth as it’s take time to look deeply in order to transform both our individual difficulties and the difficulties in our society.

We are so fortunate with Rinpoche kindness to have a similar retreat for us to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Such a great place to practice dharma in nature with walks, breath meditations and fresh air.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article and giving an opportunity to explore the beautiful retreats in the world.

This is definitely one of the best way for us to collect merits and plant seed for us to be able to do her practice in future. From this article I know and learn about the very sacred female Buddha. It gives us great opportunity to collect merits and make offering by having Vajrayogini stupa and statue in Kechara Forest Retreat.Thank you very much for the guidance and sharing such a good article.

China to Open its Own Nalanda University in Hainan Province . The campus of Nanhai Buddhism Academy was designed by internationally acclaimed architect which is located in the scenic Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone. That’s wonderful. It’s the only institute of higher education in the world offering instruction. Offering various programs on Buddhist Studies in Han-Chinese Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism and Southern Buddhism . The Chinese government are willing to invest billions in having such a university to benefits the people and for most spreading Buddhism .

Came across this old post . Well for someone to admit one mistakes , realised the true , having the courage to swallow one’s pride and apologise, I rejoice for them. Some might not have the courage to admit it. Admitting a mistake is not a weakness after all on the contrary, it shows an openness of our heart. Every one of us might have made mistakes along our life path. We learn from our mistakes, admit our own before we point out someone else’s and grow from there.
Lobsang Monlam ‘s message is very touching , its better for him to say sorry now than never. Or else he will regret forever. A good teacher like our Lama is hard to find. We are very fortunate to have met Rinpoche in this life , Rinpoche had changed the lives of many.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Seng Piow for this sharing.

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and lack of interest. Different causes can often combine to trigger depression. Whatever it is ….depression comes from our own karma for what we did in this life or the previous life. People who suffer from depression often report feelings of loneliness and isolation. If not treated it could lead to more serious matters related. It will interfere with our daily life for sure. Learning Dharma, practicing it will help us to transform our mind more positively. We will see the light even in the darkest of times in our life.
Thank you Rinpoche for this teachings with folded hands.

This is an amazing news for vegetarian and vegan eaters in California. I strongly believe it a great move to encourage more people to be vegan. Choosing a vegan lifestyle can contribute many beneficial factors to one’s life.

A vegan diet is the most beneficial to mankind as it is one of the healthiest diets in the world, it is the world’s most environmentally friendly diet. Many vegans have found themselves starving while they are traveling and not being able to find any foods free of animal products on the road and this will be very convenient.

Thank you for the interesting sharing, Hope to hear and see more countries could have Vegan Grocery. It will be extremely beneficial to the planet and will encourage a healthier lifestyle.

We have to do our homework……yes I agree with what Rinpoche had said. We can’t go back and change the beginning but we can start where we are and change the present. We have to work it out somehow even there is a hurdle or obstacles to go. In life we bond to have obstacles to clear along the path of life. Accepting those obstacles as they come , learn from there and let it be. Choosing to learn, practice Dharma and putting it into action is the best choice. Doing Dharma I have chosen have make my life filled with happiness.
Thank you Rinpoche for these teachings.

The Heart Sutra is the most widely known sutra of the Mahayana tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. We may try changing who we are in an attempt to fit in and even if we achieve a new feeling of belonging, the emptiness remains. Emptiness is an important door to liberation in life. The Heart Sutra is a very condensed contemplation manual. Will read it over and again to understand better . I still have a long way to go trying to absorb what ever I could. We have to develop a soft heart and compassion, firstly before we read the sutras. At the heart of emptiness is compassion….quoted.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great teachings.

Unbelievable what they did…. Mumu and Oser. They saved an injured tiny bird, bringing to Rinpoche. They are like one of us , can feel and knew that the bird needed help. Mumu and Oser knew who to bring to. Great Job, they did their best, sadly the injured bird passed away. But fortunate to have Rinpoche blessing. Mumu and Oser are amazing dogs had showed us an example to give care, love and be kind even they were of different species.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
