Rapping Monk of Japan!

Jan 31, 2011 | Views: 1,076

This is a Japanese monk named Kansho Tagai, also known as Mr. Happiness (or MC Happiness).

Kansho Tagai heads a 400-year-old Kyoouji Temple in central Tokyo (Japan) and over the years he has seen a steady decline in his people’s interest in the temple. He realized that it was the younger generation who found temples too foreign…and because they didn’t understand Buddhist texts (sutras), the youths found Buddhism as a whole, hard to relate with…

Kansho Tagai told news reporters that upon hearing rap music for the first time, he didn’t understand a word as it was all in English…it then made him realize that it was probably the same with lay people hearing Buddhist sutras. It naturally came to him to appeal to the youths by making Buddhism more modern.

2,000 years ago, Buddhism had already incorporated music into their ceremonies with Buddhist monks in Japan using traditional Japanese music. Today Kansho Tangai is updating it to Japanese rapping!

Initially the other monks found it hard to accept Kansho Tangai rapping in the main hall of their historical temple…but after seeing the success of his unconventional methods, they have started to support the idea. It is within the main hall of the Kyoouji temple that Kansho Tangai and youths would come together and rap. The audience can be seen to participate and bob their heads to Kansho Tangai rapping Buddhist sutras in modern Japanese.

Kansho Tagai has said that “Many ordinary people come here for the first time for one of the concerts and then later come for a day-long Buddhist retreat and then learn more about the religion”.

“In the modern world, we need to deliver. If people won’t come to my temple because it still feels like a foreign place, I must take Buddhism to the people. I am a delivery man”.

What a cool and very kind approach that Kansho Tagai has taken. He has plans to have tap-dancing and samba within the temple as well. Other Buddhist temples have started to adopt Kansho Tagai’s philosophy: not sacrificing Buddhist teachings but presenting it in an open and modern way. Some have opened bars that serve alcohol to attracts those who like to go out drinking at night…and some monks and nuns have done fashion shows to attract the fashion-conscious youths.

The Buddhist teachings have not changed, it is just the way they are presented. If the end result is that more people get drawn to Buddha’s teachings…why not?? Unconventional methods are not wrong methods. If the old way doesn’t work…then out with the old and in with the new! hehe

Japan is a very modern and advanced country but people who practice spirituality has declined. However, the Buddhist monks in Japan are very creative and innovative. There is a monk who uses disco music to attract young people to go to the temple; there is a monk who sings to spread Dharma and this monk uses rap music to get close to the younger generation to connect them with the 3 Jewels.

As time changes, we have to change our ways to benefit people. We cannot expect them to follow our ways but we have to think of ways to go into their lives and benefit them with Dharma. It is just like how Tsem Rinpoche is using social media platforms to spread Dharma. People from all around the world are able to learn Dharma without coming to Malaysia.

In order to benefit people, we cannot be too rigid. We must think out of the box. We have to be alert and aware of what people like and need, then we can find ways to help them. Life is not all about ourselves but it is about how we make ourselves useful to help others.

Kansho Tagai is a very creative monk, really great to see such a skill monk used his skilful and unconventional method to spread Buddhism to people. I like his quote, “In the modern world we need to deliver. If people won’t comet the my temple because it feels like a foreign place, I must take the Buddhism to people, I am delivery man.” It doesn’t matter what way, as long as people can learn buddhism in that way, it is a good way. Thank you very much Rinpoche for sharing an interesting video and article.

Amazing way of spreading Buddism.A Japanese monk in Tokyo is using rap, hip hop and chanting to bring Buddhism to a younger audience.Kansho Tagai is the head of the 400-year-old Kyoouji Temple in Tokyo.

What a cool monk spreading the dharma through rap. In this modern age.Kansho Tagai did whatever that works to get his message to the public and promote Buddhism.Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this cool article about Rapping Monk! 🙂

Kansho Tagai is a modern and happy Japanese buddhist monk. He used his skilful and unconventional method to spread Buddhism to people. Quote ‘In the modern world we need to deliver. If people won’t come to my temple because it still feels like a foreign place, i must take Buddhism to people, i am a delivery man. His method worked and became successful! Thank you for sharing this interesting video and article.

Wow! This monk named Kansho Tagai is so creative, he spreads Dharma by rapping Sutras. What a brilliant idea. After he started rapping more people joined his Buddhist organization thanks to rapping Sutras. I hope that all the teachings in the world will spread widely through the world.

Kansho Tangai is a modern monk. Rinpoche’s approach is also the same. Rinpoche did it in his way and Kansho Tangai did it in a Kansho Tangai way. Amazing! It shows me everyone is different; everyone is unique with their way. I accept.

  9. lewkwanleng on Sep 14, 2011 at 11:44 pm

To me this is very skillful ways to attract people to Buddhism. From where I grow up, Buddhism is being coined as boring, and as such, not many young people get into Buddhism since young. By changing the methods while still keeping essence of Buddhism, we can attract more younger people to practice generosity and compassionate from a much younger age.

I rejoice for Kansho Tagai for his creativity and persistence. I am sure he had quite a lot of rejections when he started this but he persisted and now he is creating results!

  10. patsy on Apr 3, 2011 at 11:40 pm

What a cool monk….spreading the dharma through rap. In this modern age, it would be impossible to spread dharma like it was 2,500 years ago as it will not captivate the modern generation. This monk did whatever it takes to spread the dharma and his method works. He reminds me of Rinpoche, who uses different methods and approach to teach the dharma. To quote Kansho Tagai “In the modern world, we need to deliver. If people won’t come to my temple because it feels like a foreign place, I must take Buddhism to the people. I am a Delivery man.” Well, the essence of Buddha’s Teachings remain the same, only the method is different.

  11. William on Apr 2, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Kansho Tagai did whatever that works to get his message to the public and promote Buddhism. It is a huge risk he is taking but it has born good results to him. Just like Rinpoche whose teachings are relevant in the 21st century. The world is changing and the way Buddhism is presented is also different but the core teachings of Buddhism has not changed.

Rap is wonderful. a ‘rap battle’ reminds me of a Monastic debate. Each person is slinging logic at the other person at lightning speed, no time for contemplation.

    • Joy on Mar 1, 2013 at 11:51 am

Interesting point Josh that you mentioned that rap is likened to Monastic debate…. at lightning speed you are to think and speak your points without contemplating too long! This true because if you can debate fast and quick it really goes to show how much you know and how well you know the subject.

Rap is just another method that is samsaric, used to attract those who perhaps would not be attracted to spirituality, in this case Budhism. Very smart of this Japanese monk. In some ways he reminds me of Rinpoche and the many funny crazy ways Rinpoche uses skillfully to bring Dharma to others. It is like Vajrayogini’s energy, using the desires of this world to attract us in to Dharma. And this is why I suppose Kechara has so many young, vibrant, youthful, cool and hype people in our center which is what makes Kechara so very unique from the rest. And this is how Dharma grows when the methods of presentation adapts to the current trends.

  14. Anila on Feb 11, 2011 at 3:27 pm

In countries like Japan that has been moving upwards so fast and one of the most modern country in the world. You cannot get the younger generation to join you in Dharma unless a more modern type of concept is applied. I was just wondering whether Japanese Buddhism has any rules that they cannot drink alchohol. Tibetan Buddhism abstains you from doing so many things that a Japanese monk can do. The thing is when you drink you will blur your mind. Then how can you pray and practice. I don’t think I am able to comprehend maybe because I still have the old ways of thinking. On the other hand I notice those centres that are liberal and not so uptight in the rules grow faster than those still in the olden era.

Japan, after the 2nd World war, has greatly changed, due perhaps to the great influence of the westernised and modern authorities governing and managing methods then. Japan today, can be said to have been reborn into a very modernised generation, with its elegant standard of living, lifestyle, livelihood or whatever you call it, more extravangant and up to date than any country in the World – and more successful too! As our wisdomised Kansho Tangai has said, “In the modern world, we need to deliver. If people won’t come to my temple because it feels like a foreign place, I must take Buddhism to the people. I am a Delivery man.” As also mentioned in the blog, Tangai’s above philosophy is not sacificing Buddhist teachings, but using more modern, open, suitable and attractive way and style to promote Buddhism to a new generation of people of today’s era! The Buddhist teachings have not changed, but he has to change its way to appeal to the new generation of people. If the mountains don’t come to Kansho Tangai, he must go to the Mountains. SYABAS TO KANSHO TANGAI, AND OUR DEEP GRATITUDE TO RINPOCHE FOR SHOWING US THE WAY!

I love this, what a cool guy. A great way to reach out to others that may not typically be open to Buddhism. Love this 🙂 Thank you for sharing.

Time Changes, people changes and lifestyle changes. The purity of Buddhism never changes but I am so glad to see the methods of teaching such an old traditional and beautiful means of being a better person being changed by the Rapping Monk of Japan.

It is possible to have a world of better people living the Buddhist path.

Look at beautiful pictures of mountains and lakes are Rinpoche past times since young. Ever since then Rinpoche dream to stay near a lake or river with mountains and forests…..a home call home do intense practice. As Rinpoche ‘s promise to his Gurus , Rinpoche will carry on whatever happened. Reading this post of Rinpoche’s thought , longing and loneliness , I have a sense of loneliness as well but it different from Rinpoche. I do feel peaceful and the quiet environment, breathing fresh air up in the mountains. Spending some time alone with nature and broaden my views. The beauty of nature can have a long effect on how we look at things. Rinpoche journey is truly inspiring and I wish Rinpoche ‘s dream will materialise soon. I will do my best to learn as much as I could, and practice dharma, which I have learned from scratch, nothing to something , I do truly appreciate so much with folded hands.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing your thoughts with us.

Due to the unethical ban on Dorje Shugden practice, Dorje Shugden practitioners, non practitioners and many more had suffered mentally , abuses , discriminations , violence, public services denied and so forth. Sadly all because of the Tibetan leadership , families were torn apart, monasteries divided . The Tibetan Leadership has mixed politics with religion . Should not have happened.
With all these simple memes , hopeful more people will get a better understand and truth of this Dorje Shugden controversy.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing. May the Dorje Shugden ‘s ban will be lifted soon.

It is amazing that a cat can understand the rules that were told and abided by it. Even though the cat cannot chant but it just stays quietly, listening to the chanting and staring at the Buddha statue with full respect. The cat follows the vegetarian diet and refuses to eat meat.

This cat must have a very strong imprint that it follows the monastic rule and so insistent on paying the homage to the Buddha. It must have been a Dharma practitioner before but due to its karma, it took rebirth in the three lower realm. Hopefully, after the cat dies, it will take rebirth as a human and continue to practice.

When I was young, my parents used to bring me to the circus. I liked to go because there were animals that can do various tricks and I was totally amazed by what they can do. At that time, I found it to be very entertaining.

Now that I know how the animals are trained to do the tricks, it bothers me a lot. It was out of ignorance that I found the circus to be entertaining. I will never go to the circus again.

Many people like animals and love them unconditionally. Instead of buying animals, we should adopt one from the shelter. Each year, millions and millions of stray or abandoned dogs and cats are put to sleep because no one wants to adopt them.

One reason not to buy dogs from a pet shop is because very often these puppies are bred from the puppy mill. Most puppy mills keep the mother dogs in the cage all year round, they are filthy and some exhibit strange behaviour due to stress. If people stop buying puppies from the puppy mills, fewer animals will suffer.

I have learned so much about the iconography of Buddhas from Rinpoche’s blog and I can understand now why we have to learn about the iconography. If we don’t know about the iconography, making offering to a Buddha becomes worshipping an idol. If we don’t learn about the iconography of Buddhas, we may reject the practice due to our ignorance. For example, if we learn the iconography of Vajrayogini, we will have doubt why a Buddha is naked and looks wrathful.

Once we learn about the iconography of Buddhas, we will appreciate the manifestation of Buddhas in a certain form. When we share the knowledge we have learned, we can help others to clear their doubts and give them confidence in Buddhism too. When we learn more, we can benefit ourselves and others.

It is very nice to know the army is open for religion practice and Buddhism is benefitting them. Life as an army is not easy and it is stressful. One of the ways to reduce stress is to meditate. Meditation is one of the practices in Buddhism and it is proven to be effective in calming people’s mind.

In some countries, meditation is taught to the children at school to help them calm their mind and control their behaviour. It is said that children who meditate are calmer and are able to manage their emotion better. Some prisoners are also learning how to meditate to help them control themselves.

Zasep Rinpoche Speaks Plainly About Dorje Shugden

Unimpressed with wealth, fame, name or looking politically correct, Zasep Rinpoche is a devoted Dorje Shugden practitioner whose practice has been described by him as being “very close to [his] heart.” He remains loyal to the Protector practice passed to him by his masters, and is very dedicated in his determination to uphold the lineage and be of benefit to others. Having taken his practice as his life, Zasep Rinpoche also believes in the importance of respecting other traditions, and for monasteries and Dharma centres to support each other instead of being divided.

His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche who was one of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist masters of our time. Been the philosophical assistant and junior tutor of the HH 14th Dalai Lama for more than forty years. A direct disciple of the great HH Pabongka Rinpoche. He had edited the book Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand written by HH pabongka Rinpoche .These Lam-Rim texts which is still been studied up to this day in the Gelugpa lineage. He was one of many Gelug Lamas who had taught in the West. Here he is depicted with Dorje Shugden an emanation of the Buddha of Wisdom, Manjushri.

This is such a beautiful story. When Joao found Jinjing the penguin, out of compassion, he rescued Jinjing. He made sure Jinjing has recuperated before releasing Jinjing back to where it came from. Joao didn’t expect anything from Jinjing.

However, Jinjing remembers the kindness of Joao and comes back to visit Joao every year. Animals may not be able to talk but they can feel the sincerity of human beings. Jinjing knows that Joao is very kind and will never hurt it.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

    2 yearss ago
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

After the Bird Liberation, we proceeded with Dorje Shugden puja. Just before we started our puja, Pastor Patsy gave us a short Dharma Sharing. Pastor spoke about Dharma practice in these days and reminded us to always keep our samaya with Guru intact. To honour our promises, reduce our worldly activities and practice Dharma strongly. Thank you Pastor for the valuable advice~Jacinta, KPSG
