Para pembaca yang budiman,

Saya merasa terhormat mendapat kesempatan untuk menulis tentang Lama Tsongkhapa, salah satu guru dan filsuf Buddha terbesar sepanjang masa. Saya mengagumi dedikasinya yang tanpa pamrih untuk melestarikan dan menegakkan kemurnian ajaran Buddha. Melalui dedikasi ini, beliau mampu melenyapkan kebingungan dan pandangan salah yang menyebar luas pada masanya, sembari menginspirasi banyak orang untuk mempraktikkan filosofi Jalan Tengah seperti yang diajarkan oleh Nagarjuna. Di luar semua kualitas luar biasa yang beliau miliki, saya sangat menghormati fakta bahwa beliau hidup sebagai praktisi murni yang biasa-biasa saja meskipun beliau telah mencapai realisasi dari dari Anuttara Yoga. Beliau telah terhubung dengan kita secara pribadi dengan menunjukkan kepada kita bagaimana cara memulai, bertumbuh dan menyelesaikan tahapan jalan menuju pencerahan. Jika beliau telah muncul sebagai sosok luhur sejak semula dan memanifestasikan banyak keajaiban, maka warisannya tidak akan bertahan, karena praktisi saat ini tidak mudah percaya pada keajaiban. Oleh karena itu, adalah penting bagi Lama Tsongkhapa untuk terlahir sebagai praktisi biasa, untuk menunjukkan dan menginspirasi kita dengan apa yang bisa kita capai. Terima kasih pada Rinpoche karena telah memberi saya kesempatan untuk belajar dan akrab dengan riwayat hidup dari sosok guru yang luar biasa ini.

Buddha Shakyamuni yang mengajarkan jalan keluar dari penderitaan setelah mencapai pencerahan di bawah pohon Bodhi. Lukisan oleh Kritsana Suriyakarn.

Prediksi tentang kelahiran Lama Tsongkhapa telah diberitahukan oleh Buddha Shakyamuni yang Mahatahu, di Bodhgaya, India Utara. Suatu hari, seorang anak laki-laki, yang merupakan putra seorang brahmana, mendatangi Buddha Shakyamuni, bersujud dan mempersembahkan mala (tasbih) kristal yang jernih kepada-Nya. Setelah menerima mala tersebut, Buddha Shakyamuni meletakkan tangan sucinya yang berwarna keemasan di atas kepala anak laki-laki itu dan membuat prediksi kepada salah satu murid-Nya, Ananda. Beliau meramalkan bahwa anak laki-laki ini akan lahir di ‘Tanah Utara tempat Para Barbar Berwajah Merah’ (merujuk ke Tibet). Dalam kelahiran terkait, anak lelaki itu akan menghidupkan kembali ajaran Buddha Shakyamuni di era kemerosotan. Buddha Shakyamuni juga meramalkan bahwa anak laki-laki itu akan terlahir kembali sebagai emanasi Manjushri, Buddha Kebijaksanaan, dan bahwa ia akan dipanggil Sumatikirti atau Lobsang Drakpa dalam bahasa Tibet. Beliau akan mendirikan sebuah biara bernama ‘Ge’, yang berarti ‘kebajikan’, di antara Dri dan Den.

Anak laki-laki ini akan terlahir kembali sebagai Lama Tsongkhapa, seorang guru Buddhis terkemuka yang merevitalisasi ajaran Buddha dengan penekanan disiplin dan moralitas selain menyarikan ajaran paling murni dari para guru Buddhis termashyur pada masanya. Beliau juga akan mempersembahkan mahkota dan ornamen pada rupang Buddha Shakyamuni di Lhasa, sebuah aktivitas yang masih dikenang hingga hari ini.

Setelah membuat prediksi, Buddha Shakyamuni meminta salah satu muridnya, Mahamaudgalyayana, seorang Arhat dengan pencapaian tinggi yang memiliki kemampuan untuk berjalan sangat cepat dalam jarak yang sangat jauh, untuk mengubur cangkang keong di Tibet di mana nantinya Biara Gaden akan terbangun. Cangkang keong ini diberikan oleh Nagaraja kepada Buddha Shakyamuni saat ia mengajar di tepi Danau Anavatapta. Buddha Shakyamuni meniup cangkang keong ini di Gunung Kailash (Gunung Salju Ti- Se) untuk mengumumkan kehadiran-Nya dan mengumpulkan naga besar dan dewa duniawi. Suara yang mendalam ini melambangkan penyebaran ajaran Dharma sekaligus tercerhakannya para makhluk dari kebodohan batin. Cangkang keong juga melambangkan ucapan Buddha, yang mengemukakan bahwa kelahiran kembali anak laki-laki di masa depan akan menjadi wakil dari Buddha Shakyamuni sendiri. Beliau akan menyentuh hati mereka yang mendengar ajaran Buddha.

Cangkang keong, representasi dari ucapan Buddha.

Pada tahun 1409 M, cangkang keong yang dikubur oleh Mahamaudgalyayana pada masa Buddha ditemukan dalam penggalian saat Lama Tsongkhapa memulai pembangunan Biara Gaden. Penemuan cangkang keong melambangkan terpenuhinya prediksi Sang Buddha. Cangkang keong kemudian dipindahkan ke Biara Drepung hingga pertengahan abad ke-20.

Nubuat tentang Lama Tsongkhapa juga disebutkan dalam Manjushri Mulatantra. Seperti yang dikatakan Buddha Shakyamuni kepada siswa hati-Nya, Manjushri:

“Setelah saya wafat dan ajaran murni saya tiada,
Anda akan tampil sebagai makhluk biasa,
Yang melakukan aktivitas seorang Buddha.
Dan mendirikan Tanah Sukacita, Sang Pelindung Agung,
Di Tanah Negeri Bersalju”

Di sini, “Tanah Negeri Bersalju” mengacu pada Tibet dan “Tanah Sukacita” mengacu pada Biara Gaden dan ajaran Gaden

Oleh karena itu, Buddha Shakyamuni memberikan prediksi dalam dua kesempatan tentang kedatangan Lama Tsongkhapa. Yang pertama untuk anak laki-laki yang mempersembahkan mala kristal bening dan yang kedua untuk Manjushri. Buddha Shakyamuni dengan jelas menyatakan bahwa kelahiran kembali anak muda tersebut di masa depan adalah emanasi Manjushri. Hal ini dimungkinkan karena batin yang cerah disebut memiliki tiga jenis tubuh – Tubuh Kebenaran Kebijaksanaan (Dharmakaya), Tubuh Kenikmatan (Sambhogakaya) dan Tubuh Emanasi (Nirmanakaya). Dalam Buddhisme, emanasi adalah makhluk hidup atau benda mati yang dimanifestasikan oleh para Buddha atau Bodhisattva dengan tujuan memberi manfaat kepada makhluk lain. Oleh karena itu, Lama Tsongkhapa adalah emanasi Manjushri, yang bermanifestasi untuk menyebarkan ajaran murni Buddha Shakyamuni.

Lama Tsongkhapa sebenarnya dianggap sebagai emanasi dari tiga bodhisattva agung – Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri dan Vajrapani – karena beliau memiliki kualitas mendalam dari welas asih, kebijaksanaan dan kekuatan spiritual cerah yang masing-masing dimiliki oleh ketiga bodhisattva.

Avalokiteshvara atau Chenrezig adalah personifikasi tanpa cacat dari welas asih sempurna yang berikrar untuk membebaskan semua makhluk dari penderitaan. Nama Sansekerta ‘Avalokiteshsvara’ berarti ‘Yang Mulia yang memandang dunia dengan kasih sayang’. Dalam Sutra Teratai, Buddha Shakyamuni berkata bahwa jika makhluk yang menderita mendengar nama Avalokiteshvara dan dengan tulus memanggilnya, Avalokiteshvara akan mendengar panggilan tersebut dan membebaskan makhluk tersebut dari penderitaannya. Avalokiteshvara sering digambarkan memiliki 11 kepala, 1.000 tangan dan satu mata di setiap telapak tangannya, umumnya dikenal sebagai Avalokiteshvara Berlengan Seribu. Ribuan mata memungkinkan Bodhisattva untuk memahami penderitaan makhluk hidup dan seribu lengan melambangkan ketrampilannya untuk membantu mereka.

Manjushri adalah salah satu tokoh terpenting dalam Buddhisme Mahayana. Nama Sansekertanya berarti ‘Ia yang mulia dan lembut’. Manjushri pertama kali muncul dalam literatur Buddhis di sutra Mahayana, khususnya Sutra Teratai. Berikut ini adalah penjelasan kualitas Manjushri oleh guru Zen Taigen Daniel Leighton:

“Manjushri adalah bodhisattva kebijaksanaan dan wawasan, yang menembus ke dalam kekosongan fundamental, kesamarataan universal, dan sifat sejati dari segala sesuatu. Manjushri, yang namanya berarti ‘Yang Luhur dan Lembut,’ melihat ke dalam intisari dari segala fenomena. Intisari hakekat ini adalah bahwa tidak ada sesuatu pun yang memiliki keberadaan tetap dan terpisah dengan sendirinya, terlepas dari seluruh dunia di sekitarnya. Kebijaksanaan bekerja lewat penglihatan yang menembus dikotomi ilusi diri-orang lain, yaitu keterasingan yang kita bayangkan dari dunia kita. Mempelajari diri dari sudut pandang ini, kesadaran cerah Manjushri menyadari kualitas dari diri yang lebih dalam dan luas, terbebaskan dari semua karakteristik yang kita buat-buat dan tidak pernah dipertanyakan.”

Menurut tradisi Mahayana, Vajrapani adalah salah satu dari delapan siswa dekat Buddha Shakyamuni dan digambarkan dengan wujud yang damai. Namun, dalam konteks Vajrayana, Vajrapani sering digambarkan dalam wujud murka sebagai pengemban utama, pemegang dan pelindung teks Tantra, Sastra dan ajaran Buddha Shakyamuni. Oleh karena itu, beliau memberkahi praktisi Tantrik agar mencapai realisasi di jalur Tantra. Beliau diprediksi menjadi Buddha ke 1.000 yang akan mewujudkan pencerahan sempurna dan memutar Roda Dharma dalam masa kalpa ini, dengan cara yang sama seperti Buddha Shakyamuni. Karena itu, beliau dikenal sebagai perwujudan dari kekuatan transenden dan upaya terampil dari makhluk yang cerah.

Guru Rinpoche yang lahir dari teratai

1.000 tahun setelah prediksi Buddha Shakyamuni, ada prediksi lain tentang Lama Tsongkhapa yang dibuat oleh Guru Rinpoche yang Lahir dari Teratai, atau Padmasambhava. Menurut sebuah catatan, Padmasambhava menjelma menjadi seorang anak berusia delapan tahun yang muncul dalam sekuntum bunga teratai yang mengapung di Danau Dhanakosha, di kerajaan Oddiyana. Ia tiba di Tibet pada abad ke-8 M untuk membantu menetapkan agama Buddha di sana dan memperkenalkan para insan pada praktik Tantra Buddhis. Ia juga dianggap sebagai pendiri tradisi Nyingma, salah satu tradisi utama Buddha Tibet. Padmasambhava terkenal karena kemampuan siddhi-Nya yang muncul dari latihan Tantra, menghasilkan keterampilan untuk menaklukkan banyak roh jahat dan setan. Beliau meramalkan bahwa akan ada seorang biksu Buddha yang ditahbiskan sepenuhnya bernama Lobsang Drakpa muncul di timur, dekat tanah Tiongkok. Bhiksu ini akan dianggap sebagai emanasi dari bodhisattva yang sangat termasyhur, Manjushri, dan akan mencapai pencerahan dalam kehidupannya.

Dipamkara Atisha yang memiliki arus batin yang sama dengan Guru Rinpoche dan Lama Tsongkhapa

Menurut Yang Mulia Dalai Lama ke-2, Gedun Gyatso (1476 – 1542), Lama Tsongkhapa, Padmasambhava dan Dipamkara Atisha (980 – 1054) memiliki arus batin yang sama. Lama Tsongkhapa juga dikenali sebagai kelahiran kembali dari Nagarjuna, yang merupakan seorang filsuf Buddhis India abad ke-2 M yang mendirikan aliran filsafat Buddhis Madhyamaka. Keempatnya (yaitu Lama Tsongkhapa, Padmasambhava, Dipamkara Atisha, dan Nagarjuna) adalah tokoh penting dalam menyebarkan dan mengklarifikasi ajaran-ajaran Buddha.

Mimpi Pertanda Baik

Pada tahun sebelum kelahiran Lama Tsongkhapa, orang tuanya mulai mendapatkan mimpi pertanda baik. Ayahnya, Lubum Ge, memimpikan seorang biksu dari Gunung Lima Puncak (Wu Tai Shan) di Tiongkok. Dalam banyak kitab sutra, gunung ini disebut oleh Sang Buddha sebagai tempat tinggal suci Manjushri, Buddha Kebijaksanaan. Biksu itu, melakukan perjalanan dari jauh, meminta perlindungan di rumahnya selama sembilan bulan. Lubum Ge dengan senang hati menerima permintaan biksu itu dalam mimpinya.

Shingza Acho terpilih di antara 1.000 wanita lainnya untuk menjadi ibu dari Lama Tsongkhapa

Ibu Lama Tsongkhapa, Shingza Acho, juga mendapatkan mimpi pertanda baik bahwa ia sedang berada di taman yang indah bersama 1.000 wanita lainnya. Di taman itu, ada seorang anak laki-laki yang datang dari timur, berpakaian putih dan membawa bejana berisi air. Ada juga seorang gadis muda yang datang dari barat, berpakaian merah, memegang bulu merak di tangan kanannya dan cermin besar di tangan kirinya. Anak laki-laki itu mendekati setiap wanita dan bertanya kepada gadis itu wanita mana yang cocok untuk wadah tersebut. Gadis itu memilih Shingza Acho sebagai satu-satunya kandidat yang cocok dari semua wanita di taman. Setelah memilihnya, mereka membasuh Shingza Acho untuk mempurifikasinya.

Pada bulan pertama kehamilan, orang tua Lama Tsongkhapa mulai mendapatkan mimpi yang lebih baik lagi. Ayahnya memimpikan bodhisattva Vajrapani. Dalam mimpinya Vajrapani melemparkan vajra dari Tanah Sucinya, yang jatuh melebur ke dalam tubuh istrinya.

Pada tahun 1357 M, Shingza Acho memimpikan para biksu membawa banyak barang ritual sebagai persembahan untuk Avalokiteshvara, memohon pada beliau untuk muncul. Avalokiteshvara akhirnya muncul dalam wujud sosok yang luhur sebesar gunung di angkasa, bercahaya seterang matahari. Saat Avalokiteshvara mendekatinya, beliau mengecil dan melebur ke dalam tubuh Shingza Acho.

Malam sebelum melahirkan, Shingza Acho memimpikan pintu kristal di dalam hatinya yang terbuka dan para makhluk surgawi bermunculan memandikannya. Saat fajar menyingsing, lahirlah bayi yang kemudian dikenal sebagai Guru Agung Lama Tsongkhapa. Mimpi pertanda baik dari orang tuanya ini menegaskan Lama Tsongkhapa adalah emanasi Manjushri, Vajrapani dan Avalokiteshvara.

 

Kelahiran Lama Tsongkhapa

Lama Tsongkhapa (‘Pria dari Tsongkha’) Lobsang Drakpa lahir pada tahun 1357 M dari keluarga nomaden Tsongkha di Amdo, Tibet (sekarang Haidong dan Xining, Qinghai). Sebagaimana yang terlihat pada saat kelahiran suatu sosok luhur, yaitu kelahirannya tidak menimbulkan rasa sakit bagi ibunya. Kedatangan tiga bodhisattva agung dalam wujud seorang bayi laki-laki diiringi oleh nyanyian para daka dan dakini yang luar biasa serta pelangi indah yang muncul di angkasa.

Pohon Kumbum (Pohon 1.000 Rupa Buddha)

Sebuah pohon cendana yang besar dengan lebih dari 100.000 daun muncul di lokasi tepat di mana setetes darah dari tali pusar Lama Tsongkhapa jatuh. Daun-daun pohon itu membentuk garis rupa Buddha Simhanada, sehingga pohon itu dikenal sebagai Pohon Kumbum atau Pohon 1.000 Rupa Buddha. Dulu, saat musim gugur, peziarah akan mengumpulkan dan menyimpan daun-daun yang berguguran. Daunnya kemudian dihancurkan dan dibuat obat. Mereka yang meminum obat tersebut akan disembuhkan dan diberdayakan dengan kebijaksanaan yang lebih.

Pada tahun 1379, ibunda Lama Tsongkhapa, bersama dengan bantuan sesama umat Buddhis, membangun sebuah kuil kecil dengan stupa di sekeliling pohon ini. Kuil sederhana ini merupakan kuil pertama yang dibangun di Kumbum. Pada tahun 1481, kaum bangsawan dan pengembara di wilayah Kokonor membangun kuil yang lebih besar untuk membuat persembahan di pohon suci. Pada tahun 1560, meditator Rinchen Tsondru Gyeltsen membangun sebuah biara kecil bernama Gonpalung untuk latihan meditasi intensif di wilayah itu. Kemudian, Dalai Lama ke-3, Sonam Gyatso (1543 – 1588) berhenti di tempat retret yang terisolasi dan meminta Rinchen Tsondru Gyeltsen untuk membangun biara yang lebih besar di lokasi yang tepat dan mengangkatnya sebagai kepala biara. Biara baru itu bernama Biara Kumbum. Pohon suci di Biara Kumbum terletak di dekat stupa perak berhiaskan berlian dan masih bisa dilihat di wihara tersebut. Beberapa kelahiran Dalai Lama telah mengunjungi situs ini di sepanjang sejarah. Pohon itu tetap menjadi situs ziarah paling suci bagi yang berdoa di sana karena mereka disembuhkan dari penyakit, rintanganya dipurifikasi, pahala didapat, keberuntungan tertambahkan dan berkah diterima.

Berdasarkan ramalan Buddha Shakyamuni, banyak cendekiawan dan praktisi Tibet telah mengantisipasi kelahiran emanasi Manjushri sebagai seorang Lama Tibet, Je Tsongkhapa. Guru Kadampa bernama Choje Dondrub Rinchen (1309 – 1385) adalah salah satu guru Buddhis tersohor yang mengantisipasi kedatangan Lama Tsongkhapa dan tertarik akan pertanda keberuntungan yang ada di sekitar kelahirannya. Ia belajar dan tinggal di Tibet tengah sebelum kembali ke kampung halamannya untuk membangun dua biara di Amdo. Guru ini juga memimpikan Yamantaka, yang merupakan Manjushri dalam wujud murka, memberitahu bahwa dirinya akan berkunjung ke daerah Tsongkha dalam waktu satu tahun, sambil menunjuk ke area Sungai Tsongkha, “Sekitar masa-masa ini di tahun depan, Saya akan tiba di pedalaman lokasi tersebut. Sampai saat itu terjadi izinkan hatimu tenang.”

Karmapa Rolpai Dorje ke-4

Setelah Lama Tsongkhapa lahir, Choje Dondrub Rinchen mempersembahkan beberapa hadiah kepada orang tuanya bersama dengan sepucuk surat untuk menjelaskan bagaimana cara melindungi bayi mereka yang baru lahir. Ketika Lama Tsongkhapa berusia sekitar tiga tahun, Choje Dondrub Rinchen mempersembahkan hadiah ternak kepada ayahnya dan meminta hak tanggung jawab atas pendidikan Lama Tsongkhapa. Menyadari kualitas unggul putranya semasa dininya, ayahnya mengirimnya ketika ia baru berusia tiga tahun untuk menerima ikrar upasaka dari Karmapa Rolpai Dorje ke-4 (1340 – 1383). Ia diberi nama Kunga Nyingpo, dan Rolpai Dorje meramalkan bahwa anak laki-laki ini akan disebut sebagai ‘Buddha Kedua’.

Lama Tsongkhapa meninggalkan orang tuanya untuk tinggal bersama Choje Dondrub Rinchen pada usia tujuh tahun. Bahkan di usia yang sangat muda, ia menunjukkan kecerdasan yang luar biasa. Ia bisa membaca dan menulis teks-teks Buddhis hanya dengan mengamati gurunya. Choje Dondrub Rinchen memberinya inisiasi Heruka, Hevajra dan Yamantaka, tiga dari inisiasi Anuttarayoga Tantra yang paling terkemuka, dan transmisi lisan dari banyak sutra termasuk Manjushrinamasamgiti. Ia juga diberi ajaran mendalam tentang praktik Tantra ini. Selama periode inilah Lama Tsongkhapa mulai berlatih meditasi. Ia baru berusia delapan tahun ketika ia menerima ikrar sramanera dan mendapat nama Lobsang Drakpa (yang diterjemahkan menjadi Sumatikirti dalam bahasa Sanskerta), yang sekali lagi merupakan pemenuhan prediksi Buddha Shakyamuni.

Pada usia tujuh tahun, Lama Tsongkhapa muda mengalami penampakan murni dari Dipamkara Atisha (982 – 1054), seorang guru Buddhis yang mulia, yang aktivitas hidupnya adalah untuk memulihkan kemurnian Dharma di India dan Tibet. Penglihatannya akan Atisha menunjukkan bahwa ia akan mengikuti jejak Atisha dalam mengklarifikasi ajaran Buddha.

Pada usia 16 tahun, Lama Tsongkhapa meninggalkan Amdo menuju U-Tsang untuk melanjutkan studinya tentang risalah agung Buddha. Sebelum dirinya pergi, Choje Dondrub Rinchen menginstruksikan Lama Tsongkhapa untuk berfokus pada praktik Yamantaka, Vajrapani, Manjushri dan Amitayus, dan untuk menenangkan tiga Pelindung Dharma (yaitu Vaisravana, Mahakala dan Dharmaraja/Kalarupa) untuk menjaganya di jalan spiritualnya.

Karena ia memiliki firasat kuat bahwa ia tidak akan pernah kembali ke kampung halamannya, Lama Tsongkhapa memberikan persembahan mandala yang indah, yang tampak seperti permata yang berkilauan, kepada Choje Dondrub Rinchen sebagai hadiah perpisahan. Ia juga melafalkan ‘Pujian Nama-nama Manjushri’ kepada gurunya saat ia berjalan menjauh dari gurunya. Saat ia mencapai bait, “Mereka yang tidak kembali ke siklus samsara, mereka tidak akan muncul lagi,” ia tahu bahwa ia tidak akan kembali lagi. Pada saat itu, ia merasakan kesedihan yang luar biasa sehingga air mata mengalir di pipinya. Choje Dondrub Rinchen tetap berdiam di Biara Jakyung, yang terletak di sebelah selatan Biara Kumbum.

Pencarian Lama Tsongkhapa akan Pengetahuan

Pada musim gugur 1373, Lama Tsongkhapa memulai perjalanannya ke Biara Drikung, Tibet Tengah. Butuh lima hari untuk sampai di tujuannya dari Lhasa. Di biara ini, beliau berlatih di bawah bimbingan kepala biara Chennga Chokyi Gyelpo dan belajari berbagai topik termasuk petunjuk rahasia yang disebut ‘Untaian Berlian’, Enam Yoga dari Naropa dan Mahamudra, yang juga dikenal sebagai ‘Segel Agung’.

Kompleks Biara Drikung

Lama Tsongkhapa muda melanjutkan perjalanannya ke Gungtang, di mana beliau mempelajari delapan ranting diagnosa medis di bawah bimbingan dokter hebat Lhadje Konchok Kyab. Beliau belajar kedokteran untuk menunjukkan dedikasinya yang murni dalam mengikuti kode etik Bodhisattva. Seorang Bodhisattva harus melatih setiap seni dan sains yang akan bermanfaat bagi orang lain. Meskipun beliau menguasai risalah medis, beliau tidak pernah benar-benar mempraktikkan kedokteran. Namun, karena keahlian medisnya, dokter lain sering berkonsultasi dengannya mengenai pengobatan terbaik untuk pasien mereka.

Lama Tsongkhapa melanjutkan pencarian pengetahuannya di salah satu biara terbesar pada saat itu, Chodra Chenpo Dewachen di Nyerthang, setelah menyelesaikan studinya di Biara Drikung. Beliau belajar di bawah bimbingan Tashi Senge dan Densa Gekong. Di Nyerthang, beliau mempelajari karya Buddha Maitreya dan mencapai pemahaman lengkap tentang Kesempurnaan Kebijaksanaan (Prajnaparamita). Karena itu, beliau sudah terkenal sebagai sarjana hebat di usia muda 19 tahun.

Biara Samye

Kemudian, beliau berdebat di Biara Samye, menerima inisiasi Heruka di Zhalu dan mengikuti ujian Prajnaparamita di Sakya. Menurut otobiografinya ‘Rampungnya Tujuan-tujuan’, beliau mempelajari teks dan topik seperti ‘Lima Kitab Maitreya’ secara panjang lebar. Beliau juga mempelajari karya-karya terkait dengan Asanga (abad ke-4), Abhidharma dari Vasubhandu (abad ke-4), sistem logika Dignaga dan Dharmakirti (abad ke-6) dan Madhyamaka sistem Nagarjuna (150-250 M). Kajian mendalamnya tentang filsafat dan logika kemudian menjadi intisari dari Tradisi Gelug.

Selama masa studinya, beliau juga mengikuti debat filosofis di berbagai biara, seperti Biara Sakya, Sangden, Garong, Ngam-ring dan Nenying. Ketenarannya terus meningkat setelah mengambil bagian dalam debat dialektis tentang empat Risalah Agung Maitreya di Tse-tang.

Beliau berkomitmen untuk mengembangkan pemahaman yang benar tentang Dharma dan bertekad untuk menggabungkan pendidikannya dengan praktik sutra dan tantra. Lama Tsongkhapa juga tertarik pada bidang studi lain seperti komposisi puisi, astrologi dan konstruksi mandala. Baik guru maupun siswa lainnya menghormatinya karena kecerdasannya yang tertinggi dan debatnya yang terampil. Pengejarannya akan pengetahuan berlanjut dari 1373 hingga 1393 saat ia melakukan perjalanan ke seluruh Tibet dan belajar di bawah 45 guru terhebat dari berbagai aliran Buddhis. Terlepas dari pamornya akan penguasaan Dharma, Lama Tsongkhapa tetap rendah hati sepanjang hidupnya.

Rendawa Zhonnu Lodro

Selama mencari ilmu, beliau memusatkan perhatian pada tradisi Sakya dan tradisi Sangpu yang berasal dari Biara Sangpu yang didirikan oleh Atisha. Salah satu guru utamanya adalah Rendawa Zhonnu Lodro (1349 – 1412). Rendawa adalah pendukung pandangan Prasangika dari filosofi Madhyamaka (Jalan Tengah) Nagarjuna. Selama waktu ini, Lama Tsongkhapa mengabdikan dirinya terutama pada pembelajaran dan pelatihan dalam Komentar Kognisi yang Valid. Beliau mengembangkan hubungan Guru-siswa yang kuat dengan Rendawa. Mereka saling menghormati dan mengagumi satu sama lain, dan Lama Tsongkhapa bahkan menyusun doa untuk Rendawa sebagai tanda kekagumannya:

Pemimpin Bijaksana Tanpa Cela, Manjushri,
Kasih Sayang yang Bebas dari Objek, Avalokiteshvara,
Mahkota permata para orang bijak dari Negeri Salju,
O Rendawa Zhonnu Lodro, di kedua kakimu aku membuat permohonan ini;
Berikan perlindungan kepadaku; seekor lalat yang sedang mencari pembebasan.

Doa murid kesayangannya ini menggerakkan Rendawa. Namun, beliau merasa doa yang dibuat oleh Lama Tsongkhapa lebih dapat diterapkan untuk menggambarkan kualitas siswanya. Oleh karena itu, beliau membalas dengan mengganti namanya dengan Lama Tsongkhapa bersama dengan sedikit perubahan lainnya:

Kasih sayang yang bebas dari objek, Avalokiteshvara,
Pemimpin Bijaksana tanpa cela, Manjushri,
Penakluk gerombolan mara, Vajrapani,
Mahkota permata para orang bijak dari Negeri Salju,
Lobsang Drakpa, di kedua kaki-Mu, saya berdoa.

Doa yang berisi berkah Lama Tsongkhapa dan Rendawa ini juga dikenal dengan mantra Migtsema. Mantra ini adalah salah satu doa terpenting bagi praktisi Gelugpa dan pemuja Lama Tsongkhapa.

Mantra Migtsema Lama Tsongkhapa adalah mantra yang luar biasa berkekuatan yang cocok untuk siapa saja pada semua tahap latihan. Selain itu, mantra Migtsema adalah titik utama Guru Yoga Lama Tsongkhapa, yang awalnya diajarkan oleh Manjushri kepada Lama Tsongkhapa. Lama Tsongkhapa mengajarkannya kepada Sherab Senge dan beliau secara bergiliran memberikannya kepada Palden Sangpo yang menuliskannya sampai ke anak cucu. Berikut adalah manfaat yang diketahui dari melafalkan mantra Migtsema, umumnya dikenal sebagai mantra Lama Tsongkhapa:

  • Menenangkan karma dan rintangan negatif.
  • Meningkatkan pahala kebajikan, rentang hidup dan realisasi Dharma.
  • Meningkatkan kasih sayang, kebijaksanaan dan kekuatan spiritual.
  • Melindungi dari setan dan kematian sebelum waktunya.
  • Menciptakan hujan untuk tanaman dan mengontrol cuaca.
  • Menyembuhkan penyakit ‘drib’ (sejenis gangguan mental yang membuat kita kusam dan mengantuk terutama selama belajar Dharma) dan disebabkan oleh golongan roh tertentu.
  • Melindungi dari bahaya senjata.
  • Menyembuhkan penyakit angin atau ‘paru-paru’ (penyakit jiwa lainnya yang membuat emosi kita naik turun karena tekanan mental yang timbul dari berbagai sebab).
  • Menyembuhkan cacat fisik dan mental.
  • Melindungi dari bahaya seperti perampok.
  • Menenangkan hambatan untuk bercocok tanam seperti serangan serangga.
  • Melindungi mereka yang bepergian.
  • Mereka yang mengucapkan doa tidak akan pernah lapar atau menginginkan makanan.

Mantra Migtsema adalah mantra dari Lama Tsongkhapa

Banyak pertanyaan muncul karena fakta bahwa para praktisi Gelug berdoa kepada Lama Tsongkhapa, seorang guru yang tampaknya biasa saja, alih-alih kepada Bodhisattva Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara dan Vajrapani secara individu. Alasannya adalah karena Lama Tsongkhapa, guru Dharma yang rendah hati dan cemerlang, adalah perwujudan dari tiga Bodhisattva agung. Oleh karena itu, melafalkan mantra Lama Tsongkhapa sama saja dengan memohon dan menerima berkah dari tiga Bodhisattva agung.

Selain Migtsema, ada berbagai pujian bagi Lama Tsongkhapa yang bisa diucapkan sebagai doa untuk menerima berkah darinya. Ini termasuk:

Pada tahun 1370, Lama Tsongkhapa dan Rendawa pergi ke Ngam-rim, dimana Guru Rendawa menyusun komentar tentang ‘Ringkasan Abhidharma’ (Abhidharma Samuccaya). Lama Tsongkhapa muda juga mendengarkan ajarannya tentang komentar Pramana-vartika. Lama Tsongkhapa begitu terpesona dan tersentuh oleh makna dan realisasi dari Pramana-vartika sehingga getaran kebahagiaan menggulung-gulung di tulang punggungnya dan air matanya mengalir deras.

Beberapa tahun kemudian, beliau menghabiskan musim panas di Biara Narthang di mana beliau mendengarkan ajaran tentang komentar dari Pramana-vartika yang disusun oleh Lotsawa Donsang yang agung dan berpartisipasi dalam debat filosofis di sana.

Dengan bertambahnya jumlah muridnya, Lama Tsongkhapa memutuskan bahwa sudah waktunya beliau menjadi biksu yang sepenuhnya ditahbiskan. Lama Tsongkhapa menerima sumpah sebagai biksu yang ditahbiskan sepenuhnya di Yarlung, dikelilingi oleh 20 biksu. Tsultrim Rinchen, guru dari Empat Topik Agung menjadi guru pembimbing ikrar.

Biara Narthang

Selama tinggal di Biara Tsel, Lama Tsongkhapa memeriksa dan memahami seluruh luasnya Kangyur, kata-kata yang diucapkan Buddha, dan Tengyur, komentar-komentar ajaran Buddha, membukanya untuk wawasan baru ke dalam seluruh tubuh ajaran Buddha. Di Biara Tsel beliau mulai menulis komentarnya tentang Abhisamaya-alamkara dan terlibat dalam kompetisi menghafal secara informal bersama tiga biksu lainnya: Ling Tsungme, Jampel Trashi dari Domey dan Sakya Drup, yang merupakan ahli kitab yang terkenal. Namun Lama Tsongkhapa, dengan kecerdasan adibiasanya, muncul sebagai pemenang.

Sebelum menyelesaikan komposisi komentarnya tentang Abhisamaya-alamkara, dengan penuh semangat ia menyelesaikan praktik Nyungne di kaki rupang Avalokiteshvara yang muncul sendiri. Beliau juga pergi ke Cikyul dan Dewachen untuk memberikan banyak ceramah. Di Dewachen- lah beliau menyelesaikan komentarnya.

Dari Dewachen, beliau pergi ke Kyormo Lung, di mana beliau menerima ajaran tentang Tantra Kalacakra dari Tokden Yeshe Gyeltsen, guru dari Yang Suci Karmapa Rolpai Dorje ke-4. Tempat tersebut juga merupakan tempat di mana Lama Tsongkhapa memiliki kesempatan untuk belajar tentang Komentar Agung Roda Waktu (penjelasan Kalacakra) secara lebih rinci, serta mata pelajaran terkait seperti persiapan grafik astrologi.

Selama musim panas di Olkha Cholung di Yarlung, beliau mengadakan retret yang berfokus pada istadewata meditatif Heruka. Di sana, beliau melakukan Enam Latihan Niguma dan latihan pernapasan dalam 100 kali selama setiap sesi. Beliau mengembangkan kesadaran tinggi sebagai hasil dari praktiknya. Pada musim semi 1390, beliau pergi ke daerah Tsang dan tiba di Nubchu Lung di Rong mana ia mendengarkan ajaran Keranjang Tantra dari Drakpa Shenyen.

Lama Tsongkhapa belajar di bawah bimbingan banyak guru besar termasuk:

  • Chennga Sonam Gyeltsen (1378 – 1466), seorang Lama Drigung dari siapa beliau menerima Enam Yoga Naropa;
  • Lama Jonang Chokle Namgyel (1306 – 1386), dari siapa beliau menerima siklus Kalachakra;
  • Guru Sakya Rinchen Dorje, dari siapa beliau menerima Lamdre ajaran dan Hevajra Tantra;
  • Khyungpo Lepa Zhonnu Sonam, dari siapa beliau menerima siklus Guhyasamaja;
  • Đến Nga Drakpa Jam-chup di Biara Tel, dari siapa beliau menerima Enam Yoga Naropa, tulisan-tulisan yang dikumpulkan dari Pakmo Drukpa, tulisan-tulisan Jikten Gonpo dan ajaran Jalan dan Tujuan; dan
  • Lama Dampa Sonam Gyeltsen Pelzangpo, dari siapa beliau menerima siklus mandala tubuh Heruka Chakrasamvara.

Berbekal pemahaman konkrit tentang filosofi Madhyamaka, beliau mulai menggubah karya awal terpentingnya tentang Prajnaparamita berjudul ‘Untaian Emas’ (legs bshad gser phreng).

Beliau mempelajari logika dan penalaran secara intensif pada usia 22 tahun dengan berfokus pada karya-karya kognisi yang valid oleh Dignaga dan Dharmakirti. Beliau sangat terkesan dengan karya Dharmakirti dari Suwarnadwipa, ahli logika Buddha abad ke-10 dari Sriwijaya, Sumatra. Dharmakirti juga dikenal sebagai guru Dipamkara Atisha. Sebagian besar karya Dipamkara Atisha didasarkan atas karya Dharmakirti dari Suwarnadwipa. Selama 11 tahun berikutnya, beliau melakukan perjalanan dari satu perguruan tinggi monastik ke perguruan tinggi lainnya untuk mempelajari pengetahuan filosofis baru dan memberikan ajaran.

Ketika Lama Tsongkhapa berusia 33 tahun, beliau bertemu dengan Lama Umapa yang luar biasa dari Tsang, yang bepergian untuk belajar bersama Lama Tsongkhapa. Lama Umapa memiliki kemampuan khusus untuk berkomunikasi langsung dengan Manjushri setelah melakukan praktik ekstensif yang berkaitan dengan Manjushri. Lama Umapa kemudian menjadi media komunikasi Lama Tsongkhapa dengan Manjushri. Mereka sering menghabiskan waktu bersama dalam retret di mana Lama Umapa menyampaikan nasihat Manjushri dan menjawab dengan jawaban dari Manjushri atas pertanyaan Lama Tsongkhapa.

35 Buddha Pertobatan

Suatu hari, selama retret meditasi mereka, Lama Umapa menyampaikan pesan penting dari Manjushri. Manjushri menasihati Lama Tsongkhapa untuk berhenti bermeditasi secara berlebihan karena beliau tidak akan mencapai realisasi hanya dengan meditasi. Meditasi penting untuk mengumpulkan pahala kebajikan positif dan memurnikan karma negatif, tetapi itu tidak akan cukup bagi Lama Tsongkhapa untuk memurnikan karma negatifnya pada tingkat yang diperlukan baginya untuk menjadi tercerahkan. Manjushri memerintahkannya untuk pergi ke retret purifikasi.

Seperti yang diinstruksikan oleh Manjushri, selama musim dingin tahun 1392, Lama Tsongkhapa berhenti dari kewajiban mengajarnya dan menarik diri dari publik selama empat tahun. Beliau hidup sederhana dengan sekelompok delapan siswa dekat. Retret purifikasi dimulai di Pertapaan Chadrel pada tahun 1392 dan dipindahkan ke Olkha Cholung beberapa tahun kemudian. Selama empat tahun retret purifikasi, beliau melakukan 100.000 namaskara kepada masing-masing dari 35 Buddha Pertobatan, menyelesaikan total 3,5 juta namaskara, sehubungan dengan praktik Triskandhadharmasutra (‘Sutra Tiga Tumpukan Unggul’). Jejak bekas tubuh-Nya bisa dilihat di tanah setelah mundur. Praktik purifikasi-Nya membuahkan hasil karena beliau memperoleh penglihatan langsung dari 35 Buddha Pertobatan. Beliau juga menyelesaikan 1,8 juta persembahan mandala hingga lengan bawahnya terluka dan berdarah akibat menggunakan lengan bawahnya selama proses persembahan.

Menjelang akhir retret, Manjushri muncul dalam penglihatannya. Manjushri memberitahu bahwa karma negatif-Nya telah dimurnikan, dan sebagai hasilnya beliau sekarang dapat berkomunikasi langsung dengan Manjushri tanpa harus melalui Lama Umapa. Beliau juga mendapatkan penglihatan tentang Buddha Maitreya. Retret purifikasi Lama Tsongkhapa menginspirasi banyak guru dan guru untuk lebih berdedikasi dan berkomitmen dalam menginvestasikan lebih banyak upaya selama perjalanan spiritual mereka.

 

The Lamrim Chenmo: The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment

Lamrim Chenmo (Risalah Besar tentang Tahapan Jalan Menuju Pencerahan) telah diterjemahkan ke banyak bahasa lain termasuk Inggris dan Tionghoa.

Pada tahun 1398, beliau menyusun ‘Pujian terhadap Ketersalingbergantungan’ usai mencapai realisasi dan pemahaman yang sempurna tentang Madhyamaka setelah memperoleh penglihatan kumpulan guru besar Prasangika India. Pada tahun 1402, pada usia 46 tahun, Lama Tsongkhapa mulai menulis sebuah buku tentang jalan bertahap menuju Pencerahan yang disebut Lamrim Chenmo atau ‘Risalah Besar tentang Tahapan Jalan Menuju Pencerahan’. Buku paling terkenal ini didasarkan pada teks Dipamkara Atisha yang berjudul ‘Bodhipathapradipa’ (‘Lampu Jalan Menuju Pencerahan’). Karya ini menjelaskan secara rinci jalan bertahap menuju pencerahan dari sudut pandang sutrik tetapi juga memasukkan aspek tantrik juga. Lamrim Chenmo ditulis selama beliau tinggal di Biara Reting dan dianggap sebagai salah satu aktivitas luar biasa Lama Tsongkhapa.

Setelah menyelesaikan Lamrim Chenmo, beliau mulai menulis beberapa karya lain sekitar tahun 1407 dan 1408, khususnya komentar tentang ‘Bait-bait Mendasar Jalan Tengah’ dari Nagarjuna yang disebut sebagai ‘Samudra Penalaran’ dan ‘Esensi Kefasihan’. Pada tahun 1415 beliau menyusun Lamrim Dring atau ‘Risalah Panjang Menengah tentang Tahapan Jalan Menuju Pencerahan’, yang merupakan versi ringkas dari Lamrim Chenmo.

Sebagai pendamping volume Lamrim Chenmo, beliau menulis Ngakrim Chenmo, atau ‘Risalah Besar tentang Tahapan Tantra dari Jalan Menuju Pencerahan’ pada tahun 1405. Volume tersebut mencakup semua empat kelas tantra sesuai dengan tradisi Sarma (seperti sebagai aliran Kagyu dan Sakya) dengan penjelasan rinci tentang dua tahap Anuttarayoga Tantra, yang juga dikenal sebagai Tantra Yoga Tertinggi. Karya tantrik penting lainnya termasuk karyanya tentang Guhyasamaja, terutama ‘Komentar tentang Vajrajnanasamuccayanama Tantra’ yang disusun pada tahun 1401 dan ‘Penjabaran Lima Tahap Guhyasamaja’ yang disusun pada tahun 1411.

Realisasi dari Prediksi Buddha Shakyamuni

Lama Tsongkhapa hidup pada masa ketika banyak biara telah meninggalkan aturan Winaya (kode etik biara) dan praktiknya telah merosot. Lama Tsongkhapa bertekad untuk menghidupkan kembali ajaran Buddha dengan mengikuti metode Atisha. Beliau sangat menekankan moralitas dan terutama disiplin ketat dengan monastisisme. Upaya besarnya untuk menghidupkan kembali disiplin monastik dianggap sebagai yang terpenting dari aktivitas luar biasa-Nya.

Sepanjang hidupnya, Lama Tsongkhapa menulis 210 risalah, yang disusun menjadi 20 jilid. Risalah menggabungkan jalur sutra dan tantra, yang secara khusus ditulis untuk menyatukan Pandangan Silsilah Jalan Tengah dengan praktik Anuttarayoga Tantra.

 

Monlam Chenmo: Festival Doa Agung

Ketika berusia 52 tahun, Lama Tsongkhapa memprakarsai Festival ‘Doa Agung’ saat Tahun Baru (Monlam Chenmo) di Lhasa. Monlam Chenmo dirayakan di Lhasa selama dua minggu setelah Tahun Baru Tibet. Semua biksu, biksuni, dan umat awam dari semua tradisi Buddha Tibet berkumpul untuk berdoa dan memberikan persembahan ribuan lampu mentega. Selama dua minggu periode Monlam Chenmo, yang berlanjut hingga hari ini, orang-orang melakukan aktivitas luhur untuk mengumpulkan kebajikan dengan membuat persembahan luar biasa, terlibat dalam namaskara, pergi untuk menjalani retret spiritual dan mencari Sangha untuk menjadi sponsor. Monlam Chenmo adalah salah satu dari empat aktivitas besar Lama Tsongkhapa.

Lama Tsongkhapa adalah orang yang rendah hati yang lebih suka tidak menunjukkan tanda-tanda mukjizat. Namun, ada beberapa contoh di mana beliau menunjukkan kekuatan supranaturalnya. Suatu hari selama Festival Monlam Chenmo pertama, nyala api dari ribuan lampu mentega di biara menjadi tidak terkendali. Orang-orang takut api besar akan membakar biara tersebut. Setelah mendengar tentang kejadian tersebut, Lama Tsongkhapa memasuki meditasi mendalam dan tiba-tiba semua apinya padam seolah-olah telah terhembus angin. Beliau menahan diri untuk menunjukkan kekuatan-Nya meskipun beliau adalah sosok yang memiliki kecerahan penuh dan memiliki penglihatan dari 84 Mahasiddha yang terlihat oleh mereka di angkasa di atas Lhasa. Beliau ingin orang-orang mempelajari Dharma, daripada berjuang untuk mencapai kekuatan supernatural.

Kehidupannya yang luar biasa menjadi contoh panutan bagi komunitas biara untuk menghidupkan kembali ajaran Buddha. Melalui ajarannya yang jelas dan bimbingan khusus, kode etik biara akhirnya dihidupkan kembali. Prestasi besarnya menarik lebih banyak siswa dan pengikut ke jalan Dharma. Beliau tidak ingin melihat ajaran Buddha merosot di Tibet.

Kuil Dzingji seperti saat ini

Atas saran Manjushri, Lama Tsongkhapa pergi ke Kuil Dzingji untuk melihat Patung Maitreya. Beliau sangat sedih dengan keadaan bangunan yang bobrok dan ikon di dalamnya. Rupang suci itu tertutup debu dan kotoran. Beliau merasa terdorong untuk memulihkannya tetapi tidak memiliki cukup dana untuk menyelesaikan tugas tersebut. Lama Tsongkhapa dan para siswanya kemudian memberikan persembahan dan meminta bantuan Vaishrawana, Pelindung Kekayaan, untuk memberkati mereka dengan sumber daya yang cukup untuk menyelesaikan tugas pemulihan. Apapun yang beliau minta akan terwujud karena niatnya yang murni. Akhirnya, Kuil Dzingji dan Patung Maitreya di dalamnya dipulihkan ke kejayaan mereka sebelumnya. Pemulihan Rupang Maitreya biasanya dianggap sebagai aktivitas agungnya yang pertama.

Biara Gaden (Gaden berarti “Sukacita”)

Seiring dengan bertumbuhnya popularitas Lama Tsongkhapa, para siswa dan pengikutnya meminta beliau untuk membangun sebuah biara. Beliau merenungkan ide tersebut dan pergi untuk meminta bimbingan dari rupang Jowo Rinpoche di Kuil Jokhang di Lhasa. Jowo Rinpoche menasihatinya dalam mimpinya untuk membangun Biara Gaden pada 1409 di Pegunungan Drok Riwo. Biara ini adalah institusi monastik pertama dan paling sentral dari aliran Gelugpa Buddha. Para pengikutnya pertama kali dikenal sebagai ‘Gadenpa’ sebelum nama mereka diubah menjadi ‘Gelugpa’ – ‘Para Pemenang’.

Biara Gaden di Tibet

Lama Tsongkhapa mempercayakan pembangunan Biara Gaden kepada salah satu siswa utamanya, Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen (1350 – 1413). Beliau membangun biara sesuai dengan aturan Vinaya dan dengan ketekunan yang tinggi. Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen pertama-tama memeriksa lokasi tersebut, dan kemudian meminta izin dari Sangha untuk membangunnya. Begitu Sangha memberikan izin dan menunjuknya sebagai kepala pembangun, beliau mengambil tanggung jawab atas semua aspek bangunan, mulai dari menggali tanah untuk dapur hingga menyelesaikan sentuhan akhir pada biara dan representasi di atas altar. Bahkan detail terkecil seperti ukuran ruangan didasarkan pada teks Vinaya. Ketika proyek selesai, beliau mengundang Lama Tsongkhapa dan melakukan semua tiga rotasi pekerjaan dengan cara yang menyenangkan Gurunya.

 

Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen – Pemegang Vinaya (1374 – 1434)

Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen

Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen lahir di daerah antara Tibet tengah dan barat. Seorang murid Lama Tsongkhapa yang rajin, ia menjadikan bodhicitta sebagai komitmen di hatinya yang terdalam dan menjadikan khazanah pengetahuan kitab suci dengan kualitas yang terwujud. Ia juga dikenal sebagai salah satu siswa hati terdekat dari Lama Tsongkhapa, dan menyadari bahwa mengandalkan Guru adalah akar dari semua kualitas dan realisasi yang baik. Setelah Lama Tsongkhapa meninggal, ia tidak akan menggantikan gurunya, melainkan menyarankan Gyaltsab Je untuk naik tahta Gaden Tripa, sebagai kepala silsilah. Karena cintanya yang mendalam pada Lama Tsongkhapa, beliau menyimpan jenazah Lama Tsongkhapa dalam wadah yang terbuat dari kayu cendana. Kemudian ia menempatkannya dalam wadah vas yang terbuat dari 18 ‘dre’ (30 lbs) perak tempaan.

Setelah Lama Tsongkhapa meninggal, ia melanjutkan warisan gurunya dengan mendirikan Biara Tsunmo Tsel (Taman Ratu) di lokasi Istana Gyamadar Jampa Migyur Ling di Uruto. Biara tersebut terletak di tempat kelahiran Raja Dharma Songtsen Gampo dan di mana pengiring ratu biasanya tinggal di taman kerajaan.

Semasa hidupnya, ia melaksanakan tugas besar menghidupkan kembali Vinaya dengan menulis kumpulan karya tentang subjek yang disebut ‘Sila Agung Vinaya’, ‘Nasihat untuk Para Sramanera’ dan ‘Ritual Tiga Landasan’. Ia juga menulis sadhana untuk pencapaian mandala dan komentar, ritual konsekrasi, persembahan luar untuk Chakrasamvara, panduan sesembahan untuk membuat persembahan kepada Akshobya Guyasamaja yang muncul di depan dengan mengandalkan mandala yang bertumpuk, Lima Istadewata Sadhana dari Ganthapa, Pencapaian Roda Agung Vajrapani, Ritual Mandala untuk Chakrasamvara dari Luipa, Sadhana Yamantaka Merah-Hitam, Ritual Mandala Vajradhatu Ishvari, Ritual Kunrig Vairochana, Komentar tentang Purifikasi Alam Rendah dan Praktik Ritual dalam Tiga Keluarga Kriya Tantra.

Beliau disebut ‘Pemegang Vinaya’ karena karyanya yang ekstensif dalam menjaga sistem Dharma dari kemerosotan. Hanya menyebut namanya ‘Dulwa Dzinpa’ adalah sesuatu yang bermanfaat bagi ajaran.

Pada usia 63 tahun, ia pergi ke Tsunmo Tsel dan meninggalkan tubuh fisiknya untuk pergi ke kaki Manjusrigarbha Tsongkhapa yang Tiada Banding di istana Dharma di Tanah Suci Tushita.

 

Biara Drepung

Setelah pembangunan Biara Gaden selesai, Lama Tsongkhapa menginstruksikan muridnya yang lain bernama Jamyang Choje Tashi Palden (1379 – 1449) untuk membangun sebuah biara. Ia secara khusus menginstruksikan Jamyang Choje untuk membangun biara yang lebih besar dari Gaden.

Lama Tsongkhapa menawarinya cangkang keong yang digali selama pembangunan Biara Gaden. Setelah menerima instruksi tersebut, Jamyang Choje Tashi Palden melanjutkan membangun biara yang akan diberi nama Drepung, di mana cangkang keong tersebut tetap ada hingga pertengahan abad ke-20 M. Pembangunan dimulai pada 1416 dan selesai pada 1419.

 

Biara Sera

Biara Sera di Tibet

Pada 1408 Kaisar Yongle dari Dinasti Ming, Tiongkok (yang memerintah dari 1402 hingga 1424) mengirim undangan ke Tsongkhapa mengundangnya ke istana kerajaan di Nanjing. Mengetahui bahwa kedatangannya di hadapan Kaisar akan dirayakan dengan kemegahan dan kemewahan, beliau menolak undangan tersebut. Undangan kedua dikirim pada 1413. Kali ini, beliau mengirim murid-Nya Shakya Yeshe untuk mewakilinya. Shakya Yeshe memiliki kunjungan yang sukses ke Tiongkok dan menerima gelarnya Jamchen Choje dari Kaisar. Persembahan yang luar biasa diberikan kepada Shakya Yeshe setelah kunjungannya, yang digunakannya untuk mendirikan Biara Sera.

Biara Gaden, Drepung dan Sera menjadi tiga lembaga monastik Gelug yang paling terkemuka di Tibet dan di sana ditempatkan beberapa ribu biksu. Sayangnya, Biara Gaden yang asli, rumah spiritual Gelugpa, dirusak oleh pasukan Tiongkok selama pemberontakan tahun 1959 di Lhasa. Selama pemberontakan, tubuh sarira Lama Tsongkhapa diperintahkan oleh tentara untuk dibakar. Saat ini, pemerintah Tiongkok sedang membangun kembali biara. Setelah eksodus dari Tibet ke India pada tahun 1959, para Lama Tibet di pengasingan mendirikan kembali Biara Gaden, Sera dan Drepung di Karnataka, India, di mana mereka terus menghasilkan guru dan cendekiawan Dharma yang sangat terampil dan terpelajar.

Saat beliau mengajar Tantra Guhyasamaja di Biara Drepung, Lama Tsongkhapa berhenti mengajar di tengah jalan dan lantas berlalu pergi tanpa penjelasan. Saat beliau pergi, tiba-tiba terjadi gempa bumi dan langit menjadi sangat gelap; banyak pelangi dan pancaran cahaya yang jernih bersinar ke arah Biara Gaden.

Dalam perjalanan kembali dari Drepung, beliau mengunjungi Kuil Jokhang untuk memberikan banyak persembahan dan namaskara kepada Jowo Rinpoche. Doanya sederhana, agar Dharma tetap bertahan selama-lamanya.

Ketika akhirnya beliau sampai di Biara Gaden, beliau memberikan banyak persembahan dan mendedikasikan jasa kebajikan untuk semua makhluk dan melafalkan doa-doa Tanah Suci. Menjelang petang, beliau mulai merasakan sakit yang luar biasa di sekujur tubuhnya dan para biksu berdoa untuknya. Ia ditemani oleh Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen, Gyaltsab Je dan murid dekat lainnya. Gyaltsab Je memohon Lama Tsongkhapa untuk memberikan nasehat. Sang Guru kemudian mengambil topi orang bijak dari kepalanya dan melemparkannya ke pangkuan Gyaltsab Je. Ia juga memberinya jubah biksu sebelum berkata kepada semua siswa dekatnya, “Pahami apa yang saya maksud ketika saya melakukan ini; sekarang pergilah dan sempurnakan tekad untuk menjadi tercerahkan demi para makhluk lainnya.” Beliau memberikan instruksi terakhir ini kepada murid-muridnya dan khususnya kepada Gyaltsab Je yang beliau tunjuk sebagai penggantinya.

Pada hari kedua, mengetahui bahwa beliau akan meninggalkan dunia ini, beliau mempercayakan posisinya kepada murid utamanya, Gyaltsab Je, yang akan menjadi Gaden Tripa ke-1, perwakilan Lama Tsongkhapa di dunia. Setelah masa jabatan Gyaltsab Je sebagai Gaden Tripa berakhir, Khedrup Gelek Pelzang menjadi Gaden Tripa ke-2.

Pada pagi hari, tanggal 25 Oktober 1419, Lama Tsongkhapa masuk dalam meditasi Samadhi, memberikan banyak persembahan mendalam dan menghembuskan nafas terakhirnya. Banyak yang melihat tubuhnya berubah kembali menjadi seorang anak laki-laki berusia 16 tahun (beberapa mengatakan ini mengingatkan akan Manjushri yang masih muda) dan pelangi muncul keluar dari sekujur tubuhnya. Pelangi juga terlihat saat beliau terakhir mengajar di Biara Drepung. Tanda-tanda keberuntungan ini menandakan harapan Lama Tsongkhapa agar ajaran-Nya bertahan. Beliau meninggal dunia pada usia 63 tahun, meninggalkan warisan agung Dharma yang telah dimurnikan. Sampai hari ini, peringatan meninggalnya Lama Tsongkhapa pada tahun 1419 pada tanggal 25 bulan ke-10 dirayakan di Tibet dan Mongolia sebagai ‘Gaden Ngamcho’ atau Hari Lama Tsongkhapa.

 

Gyaltsab Je (1364 – 1432)

Gyaltsab Je

Gyaltsab Je atau umumnya dikenal sebagai Dharma Rinchen, adalah seorang biksu yang ditahbiskan dari aliran Sakya yang merupakan seorang sarjana ulung dan fasih. Kecerdasan membuatnya sombong dan awalnya ia ingin menantang Lama Tsongkhapa. Baru setelah ia mendengarkan ajaran mendalam dari Lama Tsongkhapa yang tak tertandingi, ia menyesali kesombongannya. Setelah mendengarkan ajaran Lama Tsongkhapa, ia menjadi sangat setia pada guru yang hebat ini. Ia juga seorang siswa langsung dari Rendawa. Selain sebagai Gaden Tripa ke-1, ia menulis komentar terkenal tentang Bodhicharyavatara yang dikenal sebagai Dar Tik.

Gyaltsab Je menjadi Gaden Tripa (Pemegang Tahta Gaden) pertama setelah Lama Tsongkhapa memasuki cahaya jernih untuk melanjutkan silsilahnya. Sampai hari ini, Gaden Tripa adalah kepala resmi Silsilah Gelug, bukan Dalai Lama seperti yang diyakini oleh beberapa orang. Gaden Tripa adalah posisi yang ditunjuk, dengan jangka waktu tujuh tahun menjabat. Posisi tersebut adalah simbol warisan berkelanjutan Lama Tsongkhapa.

 

Khedrup Gelek Pelzang (1385 – 1438)

Khedrub Je

Khedrup Gelek Pelzang atau lebih dikenal dengan Khedrup Je adalah salah satu siswa utama Lama Tsongkhapa. Ia dianggap sebagai emanasi Manjushri sekaligus kelahiran lampau dari Lobsang Chokyi Gyaltsen, Panchen Lama ke-4.

Ketika Gelek Pelzang berusia 21 tahun, ia belajar di bawah bimbingan Rendawa Zhonnu Lodro, dengan siapa ia ditahbiskan sepenuhnya. Ia belajar Pramanawartika karya Dharmakirti, Abhidharma dan Lima Kitab Maitreya, Nagarjuna bekerja pada Madhyamaka dan Vinaya. Ia sebelumnya sudah menjadi cendekiawan silsilah Sakya yang terpelajar sebelum menjadi salah satu murid terkemuka Lama Tsongkhapa, dan ia juga menerima instruksi Sutra dan Tantra dari Lama Tsongkhapa. Ia dikenang sebagai seorang guru karismatik yang menulis banyak komentar yang sangat baik tentang praktik Tantra, yang disusun dan diklarifikasi oleh Lama Tsongkhapa sendiri.

Karya-karyanya yang terkumpul berjumlah 9 jilid, terdiri dari total 58 risalah dan banyak buku doa. Selain itu, ia menulis teks penting tentang Kalachakra yang masih digunakan oleh Dalai Lama ke-14 saat ini.

Ia terpilih dengan suara bulat sebagai Gaden Tripa ke-2, menggantikan Gyaltsab Je. Ia juga terpilih dengan suara bulat sebagai kepala biara ketiga Gaden (setelah Lama Tsongkhapa dan Gyaltsab Je).

 

Kualitas Biksu Gelug

Jika kita meringkas kualitas baik dari para biksu Gelug dari aliran Gaden, maka akan ada 10 karakteristik inspiratif yang juga dimiliki oleh Lama Tsongkhapa sendiri:

  1. Mereka diuji lewat debat, karena penekanan ditempatkan pada logika dan pemahaman dalam membumikan praktik seseorang.
  2. Mereka mempraktikkan kerendahan hati dan tidak menunjukkan bahwa mereka memiliki pencapaian khusus. Ini karena pencapaian sejati adalah transformasi pikiran dan Enam Paramita, dan bukan kemampuan supernatural seperti terbang, berjalan cepat, kewaskitaan, dll. Ini dipandang sebagai pencapaian biasa.
  3. Mereka fokus pada etika dan disiplin monastik (Vinaya) sebagai intisari dari latihan spiritual mereka. Karena itu, para biksu Gelug mempraktikkan selibat. Mereka tidak terlibat dalam praktik yang membutuhkan pasangan.
  4. Mereka mengandalkan kombinasi jalur Sutrik dan Tantrik dari metode dan kebijaksanaan untuk memperoleh realisasi.
  5. Mereka memfokuskan ajaran mereka seturut garis silsilah Dipamkara Atisha dan mengikuti jalan dari Lamrim.
  6. Mereka berkomitmen untuk menghilangkan gangguan karena pikiran yang mengembara (misalnya gangguan, kecemburuan, kesombongan, keraguan dan kebosanan).
  7. Rasa hormat mereka tidak hanya berdasarkan jabatan, tetapi juga pencapaian. Sistem yang digunakan adalah meritokratis, contohnya seorang anak petani sederhana yang belajar cukup giat, dapat naik ke jajaran Gaden Tripa (perwakilan dari Lama Tsongkhapa di bumi, pemegang tahta dan kepala silsilah Gelug).
  8. Untuk para biksu cendekiawan, yang memiliki welas asih dan komitmen untuk belajar, mereka mungkin dapat memutar roda Dharma dan melestarikan ajaran dan tradisi Lama Tsongkhapa sebagai pemegang silsilah itu sendiri.
  9. Untuk para biksu pekerja dan administrasi, mereka melayani Sangha dengan welas asih untuk membebaskan para biksu dan biksu cendekiawan dari pekerjaan sekuler sehingga mereka dapat fokus dalam mempelajari dan mengajarkan Dharma.
  10. Mereka mengabdi pada gurunya. Menjunjung tinggi guru dengan rasa hormat yang tertinggi karena tanpa guru, kita tidak akan memiliki akses ke Dharma dan mendapatkan kesadaran dan pemahaman apa pun tentang ajaran yang lebih tinggi. Kita bisa belajar dari buku tetapi hal tersebut tidak sama dengan memiliki seorang guru yang dapat menjelaskan Dharma dengan jelas dan terampil, sehingga menciptakan kondisi yang kondusif bagi kita untuk berlatih. Karena kita tidak memiliki pahala kebajikan untuk belajar langsung dari Buddha Shakyamuni, maka guru kita menjaga komitmen mereka sehingga kita dapat terhubung dengan Dharma.

Saat ini, doktrin Gelug telah diterima dengan baik di seluruh dunia dengan adanya banyak Biara Gelug yang besar. Dengan cara ini, warisan Lama Tsongkhapa terus hidup. Beberapa dari biara ini meliputi:

Bentuk Umur Panjang Lama Tsongkhapa

Setiap elemen dari ikonografi Lama Tsongkhapa memiliki arti yang penting dan bermakna. Meluangkan waktu untuk memahami arti dari setiap simbol dalam ikonografi nya akan membantu kita untuk memvisualisasikan representasi Lama Tsongkhapa secara tepat selama doa dan meditasi. Hal ini sangatlah penting dilaksanakan ketika mengundang rupang atau gambar Lama Tsongkhapa sebagai berkah rumah anda karena rupa Buddha harus memiliki ikonografi yang benar.

Berikut adalah arti ikonografi Lama Tsongkhapa:

  1. Wajah seorang anak laki-laki berusia 16 tahun melambangkan kesegaran usia muda.
  2. Wajah yang tersenyum dan bahagia mewakili kondisi batin yang menyenangkan.
  3. Tahta teratai melambangkan bodhicitta.
  4. Piringan bulan melambangkan realisasi dari kekosongan.
  5. Singa mewakili perlindungan terhadap empat ketakutan (Mara): iblis delusi, iblis agregat yang terkontaminasi, iblis kematian yang tidak terkendali dan iblis Dewaputra.
  6. Kulit putihnya melambangkan pencapaian bodhicitta.
  7. Semburat merah di kulitnya melambangkan pencapaian shunyata atau kekosongan.
  8. Tiga jubahnya adalah lambang memegang ikrar (yaitu Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva dan Tantra).
  9. Beliau duduk dalam posisi vajra yang mewakili stabilitas permanen dan abadi dalam realisasinya.
  10. wajahnya merepresentasikan non-dualitas (melihat melampaui ilusi ‘aku’ dan ‘kamu’).
  11. Kedua tangannya mewakili dua kebenaran: kebenaran relatif dan kebenaran tertinggi.
  12. Mudra Dharmacakra mewakili pemutaran roda Dharma.
  13. Dalam wujud ‘umur panjang’ beliau nampak memegang vas, yang melambangkan penyebarluasan nektar keabadian.
  14. Pedang kebijaksanaan yang menyala-nyala melambangkan kesatuan dengan Manjushri, memotong kebodohan dan delusi.
  15. Prajnaparamita-sutra/ Sutra Kesempurnaan Kebijaksanaan bersandar di tangkai teratai mewakili kebijaksanaan yang menyadari kekosongan.
  16. Topi pandit kuning melambangkan silsilah Buddhis Gelugpa (Topi Kuning).
  17. Dua kepakan topi pandit melambangkan garis silsilah (metode) dan (kebijaksanaan) yang luas.
  18. Ujung topi yang lancip melambangkan tahap asaiksa (pencerahan).

Dalam ikonografinya, Lama Tsongkhapa memegang pedang di atas teratai di sisi kanannya. Hal ini melambangkan fakta bahwa saat kita mendengarkan dan mempelajari Dharma, maka seperti pedang, Dharma akan memotong ketidaktahuan kita. Namun, dalam ikonografinya, pedang ditempatkan di atas teratai. Teratai melambangkan kasih sayang dan cinta. Oleh karena itu, pedang bertindak dari belas kasih dan cinta, dan bukan dari niat untuk menyakiti.

Terdapat teratai (welas asih dan cinta) dengan buku Dharma di atasnya di sisi kiri-Nya. Di atas Buku Dharma ada ‘permata pengabul harapan’. Permata melambangkan manfaat dari pengetahuan yang diperoleh saat mendengarkan dan memahami Dharma. Ketika kita memberikan persembahan dan berdoa kepada Lama Tsongkhapa, pengetahuan, kecerdasan dan kemampuan kita untuk berkomunikasi, terutama melalui ucapan akan meningkat.

Lama Tsongkhapa selalu digambarkan dalam posisi meditasi. Postur meditasi menunjukkan bahwa beliau telah merealisasi pencerahan dengan cara belajar, memahami, melakukan retret dan meditasi.

    Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.

    Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.

    Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

    All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves.     The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

    An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.

    H E Tsem Rinpoche’s Sungbum project aim to preserve the teachings and practices that have been passed from teacher to disciple in an unbroken line beginning with Lama Tsongkhapa himself . History has taught us the importance of preserving Buddha’s stainless teachings. Its important to preserve and safeguard the Buddhist tradition for future generations.
    Tsem Rinpoche is a clear and effective teacher where his stories and teachings are endlessly entertaining and inspiring. The preservation is very much needed. We are so fortunate given a chance to be involved in such a meritorious project .

    Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. All thanks to our Guru bringing this practice to Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong Malaysia.

    Jason asked: Continuing from the previous answer, how do we liberate ourselves from samsara if it’s impossible to not create further karma while existing in samsara? If we create karma just be existing, that means that we will keep reincarnating over and over again so it seems like we’re stuck in the cycle
    pastor answered: Dear Jason, You've asked a very interesting follow-up question. Generally speaking, yes if you are in samsara, then you are always creating more karma. That's why the goal of Buddhists is to be liberated from samsara. The Buddha and other enlightened beings achieved this and the practice of Dharma itself is geared towards achieving this. I'll try to explain it here, hopefully I can do so in such a short space. So, normally there is no way out of samsara, but when you practice the Dharma there is. Remember in my previous reply to you, I mentioned that there are differing levels of severity of karma? Some are heavier, some lighter, etc. When practising the Dharma, you reduce the amount of karma that you produce. When you have less effects of karma, due to less negative karma itself, you can focus more on the spiritual practices that lead to liberation. I'll take the examples of the Refuge vows. There are 10 of them, split into three categories related to the body, speech and mind. First is the body, which includes to abstain form killing, as killing creates negative karma. The in the speech section, it includes to abstain from lying. This is harder to do. What is easier - to abstain from killing another human being, or lying to another person. The easier one is not to kill. Hence, you train yourself in this manner, working from those actions that are easiest to avoid, working up to those that are harder. For example in the mind section, one of the vows is not to covet something that another person has. But this is harder to do than either not lying or not killing. In other words, in our spiritual practice, we reduce the karma that we create though the actions of our body, speech and mind. Since we have less karma, we suffer less. And then finally, we are get to really subtle levels of karma, which are like residue in our mindstreams. But it's still there. In order to get out of samsara, you need to realise what we call emptiness (which is way to complicated to talk about here). In other words, the very path of the Dharma is to reduce the karma we create, starting with the easiest and working up to the hardest, which is where it becomes the easiest to understand emptiness. This who journey is a process, that's why teachings such as the Lamrim are indesipensible as it shows us the actual way to practice. Normally, we are stuck in Samsara. But when we practice the Dharma and ultimately realise emptiness (there are many, many steps in between) we are able to get out of samsara completely. This may sound confusing, which is why in Buddhism study, understand and practice is very important. When we say no to people, especially to people who care about us and want the best for us, do we accumulate negative karma from causing them emotional turmoil and pain
    pastor answered: Dear Jason, Thank you for your question. In essence, any action that causes another person harm or suffering whether physical or emotional generates negative karma. But karma is complicated and not as simple as we usually think about it. There are differences in level of severity of karma created, some can be very light and some can be heavy. These are due to the variables when creating karma, such as motivation, the actions, your feelings after it, etc. This can all be found in teachings that talk about karma, especially the Lamrim teachings. In Buddhism we teach that we need to avoid the creation of negative karma for sure. But simply by being stuck in samsara, there is actually no way out of creating karma. That is why Buddhists seek to be free from samsara altogether. Only when we are free from samsara, are we free from the creation of karma. In relation to your situation, if you are young and rely on your parents, for now you should try not to do things that are create division or disharmony within the family environment. That itself if the practice of the Dharma. Then later, when you are independent you can make more of an informed choice about what you want to do. Even in your current situation, you can practice the Dharma, it is not necessary to become a monk or nun to progress on your spiritual path. Dharma can be practiced in any environment, and actually practising towards our family is the best. When we transform our minds and our behvariours and they see just how beneficial this transformation is, this is the best way to show them that Dharma is good. This was a piece of advice that Tsem Rinpoche used to tell people in family situations all the time. I hope this helps you.

    pastor answered: Dear Rojal, Thank you for your question. In regards to meeting your guru, there are many different ways. These days you can meet your guru online as well. For example, many people did not meet Tsem Rinpoche personally, but they consider him to be there guru.     pastor answered: Dear Rojal, Thank you for your questions. It's always nice to see you here wanting to learn more. Yes it is definitely possible to deepen your practice in your sleep. This is done during practice of Highest Yoga Tantra, after receiving initiation and progressed along generation stage practice. This would obviously include everything before receiving such iniation such as having a basis and grounding in the Three Principle Aspects of the Path and the Lamrim teachings. In this practice you are able to use sleep to engage in meditation. This would need you to be able to lucid dream before hand. The ability to lucid dream itself can be developed a number of ways, but the most common is single-pointed mediation concentration during waking life. This is also known as Shamatha meditation. But in this case, the object of your meditation should be a mental one, rather than a physical one. The best would be a visualisation of the Buddha. All of this is outlined in the Lamrim teachings in the section on developing concentration. In terms of Astral Travel, yes it is definitely possible, and again there are different methods to go about this. Again this should be done only after having received the appropriate intiations and teachings from your guru. However, there are quite a few dangers involved with this. As Tsem Rinpoche mentioned before, the two main ones is that your consciousness is not able to return to your body and two that a spirit can take possession of your body if your protection is not strong and you have not invoked a Dharma protector to help with protection aspects. Another thing about astral travel, is that even if learn how to do it, it is not necessary that you can actually visit pure lands or receive teachings, etc. This is because, to do this, would require a lot of merit. So there are many things and practices to develop merit before you should engage in it. Often times, people who claim that they have received teachings or visited purelands, actually haven't though they may think that they did. It could simply be a projection of one's mind and in some serious cases perhaps even due to spirits mascarading. If you would like to learn lucid dreaming, please look into the teachings of single-pointed concentration normally. The ability of lucid dreaming comes naturally for those who progress in their shamatha meditation. As for astral travel practices, I would advise not to engage in such practices unless you receive the appropriate initiations, teachings from and under the strict supervision of a qualified guru.     pastor answered: Dear Rojal, We can understand that you feel this way, and seeing the illusion of life should definitely motivate us to want to achieve something more spiritual. In the past when people asked Tsem Rinpoche the same question, he used to tell people a couple of things: > The first is that there are two methods to deal with our spiritual path. The first is to physically renounce everything and go into the wilderness, like Buddha Shakyamuni and Milarepa did. To cut yourself from everyone and everything and meditate continuously for years until you achieve realisation. But this is very hard to do in our day and age. We still need to have contact with people, there are the necessities of life to think about. Rinpoche said we need to think about things from a practice angle also. It takes a very great level of practitioner with an immense store of merit to be able to do this successfully. > The second method is to keep living within our a community and use them as a support for the transformation of the mind and spiritual progress. For example, that it why we have monasteries and nunneries, or Dharma centres and organisations to help with spiritual practice. This method is more measured, but you can still gain the same results. This is the more practical method. Especially according to the Mahayana path of practice, Bodhisattvas need to practice certain qualities in our minds and we progress towards enlightenment. Such qualities include the Six Perfections, but if we are not around others, how do we practice them? In order to practice generosity, we need others to be generous towards. In order to practice patience, we need others to be patient towards. In order to practice morality and ethics, we need to be in situations to be able to practice our vows. Enlightened beings like Buddha and Milarepa were able to do all of this in their minds during meditation but as mentioned before they were already high level pracitioners with immense merit. For example, Buddha Shakyamuni had three countless aeons of consistent practice life time after life time until his achieved enlightenment. > Another thing that Rinpoche shared, that while understanding the drawbacks of life and the benefits of becoming enlightened, a lot of the time what happens these days is that it is mixed up with emotion due to the challenges of life. People are looking for an escape, but not an escape from samsara into enlightenment, but simple an escape from their current problems. The need for escape, known as renunciation in Buddhism, is not to simply escape samsara, but developed in a certain way through contemplation and meditation. When we have such feelings, we should analyse them to see if they are in accord with the teachings and the methods of developing true renunciation. Many people also have a unrealistic way of thinking about physical renunciation and the spiritual path in general. Most people think it is easy, but it is not, is difficult because we need to deal with our minds, our emotions, our traumas, etc, from countless lives. If we don't have a firm foundation in Dharma practice and transformation before we attempt something like Buddha Shakyamuni or Milarepa, we will give up after a while because we find it too hard. And perhaps give up spiritual practice because the path did not actually match our expectations. So the key is to be as realistic as possible about our spiritual path. So our advice, rather than give up everything, as you may have family or other responsibilities, is to use your current situation to transform your mind, to practice the teachings right now in life, so that you can start progressing along the spiritual life. The best way to do this is to practice the Lamrim teachings, which give you a firm roadmap of how and what to practice in a sequential manner. Giving up everything is not necessary to make real progress on the spiritual path, as outlined in the Lamrim, but sustained and consistent practice is the key. Then use the situations in your life to actualise that transformation. We hope this helps.

For a while I felt like my mind had transformed and I started being more proactive in helping others and making sure to complete my responsibilities as perfectly as I can to not burden others and taking the initiative to help people that I see are struggling with their work but recently I have been feeling like I’m actually harming others instead of helping them by being kind because I feel like I’m enabling their bad behavior and rude attitude, especially one person in particular that I have to work with. No matter how much I help and show kindness, they don’t seem to change…and now I feel like a pushover for smiling and helping them even though they don’t show any appreciation or respect for it and instead take advantage of me and push even more of their responsibilities on me. I’ve been having thoughts that my kindness and patience has just become a cover for fear of confrontation now. What should I do? I feel like I’m gonna lose control and lash out even though I try to focus my mind on how the people around me must be struggling
    pastor answered: Dear Jason, Thank you for your question. We are very happy to hear that Tsem Rinpoche's Dharma talks have inspired you, especially to practice patience and kindness towards others. Please do keep it up, the benefits of both qualities are immense and are central to spiritual transformation. We should always try our best to practice both patience and kindness, but sometimes practising it in the way we think may not be the best option. For example, in the case that you mentioned, it is not having the right effect on your own mind and also you are enabling your co-worker to exhibit negative behaviours as well. In this case, actually practising kindness would not be to become a pushover, taking more responsibilities, etc. This isn't beneficial for your or the co-worker. So here, practising kindness would actually be not to allow the person to do such things, but it should be practised with patience and not out of emotion. So you would do this in a very skilfful manner. The best would be to have a talk with your co-worker in a very calm manner and explain how you are feeling and how they are making you feel in the work environment, and try to sort out the situation before it progresses. Especially since you are having such thoughts of anger and the posibility of lashing out. Practicing kindness and patience is not at all become a push over or allowing others to skip out on their responsibilities, etc. We really hope this helps. Thank you.

    pastor answered: Dear Sok, Kusha grass and Durva grass are two different types of grass, they are not the same. Kusha grass is also known as halfa grass, big cordgrass, or salt reed-grass. Its scientific name is Desmostachya Bipinnata. In shape, each blade of grass is long and straight. Durva grass is also known as bermuda grass. Its scientific name is Cynodon Dactylon. In shape, each blade looks segmented and has smaller leaves sprouting from it. You can google the scientific name to see the difference between the two. Generally, they can be bought at Indian religious stores if there are any nearby where you live. Alternatively, if you live in Asia, you can buy a traditional grass broom, which you can substitue for the Kusha grass. It is a close relative of Kusha grass and the lamas have said that it can be used as substitue if you cannot find the actual grass. I hope this helps. Thank you.

    pastor answered: Dear Rojal, Nice to see you back here! Shamatha is a tool, basically through this meditation you develop single pointed concentration. But after developing that, you use it to engage in Vipashyana meditation, otherwise known as Special Insight. Different traditions have different version of Special Insight. In our tradition, we use this type of meditation to analyse what we call "emptiness." The teachings on the emptiness are the actual teaching that leads to enlightenment. All other teachings or practices help to prepare your mind to be able to do this. Shamatha comes in, because the topic of emptiness is so deep, that we need single-pointed concentration to analyse it. If we don't have this type of concentration, we will not be able to understand emptiness. Hence, shamatha and vipashyana meditation are used in tandem to achieve enlightenment. This may seem a little abstract. The Lamrim teachings go into this in a lot of detail. They can be found in the chapters dealing with the Concentration and Wisdom as part of the Six Perfections in the Great Scope sections of the Lamrim. Hope this helps. Thank you.

    pastor answered: Dear Jonathan, Thank you for your question. There is no one heart disciple of Tsem Rinpoche. This usually refers to specific person who carries on the teachings and practices of a particular teacher. Tsem Rinpoche wanted something different for Kechara, hence we carry on his teachings and practices as a group, rather than one specific person. Rinpoche trained his students, who are either Sangha, Pastors or senior students in various ways of continuing his teachings, especially through the work that they do. In this way, we continue Rinpoche's teachings as a group rather than any one heart disciple. Hope that this helps. Thank you.

My morning starts by taking refuge and making offerings to the three jewls, followed by Lama Tsongkhapa's Guru Yoga. After this I usually study Lam Rim, and other Dharma Texts. During the afternoon I meditate for a about an hour or so, and somedays I do the Dorje Shugden sadhana given by Rinpoche. Finally at night I finish my day by doing Vajrasattva meditation and confession to the 35 Buddhas. What else can I do to improve my sadhana? What practices would you recomend me to do? Do you have recomendations on texts I could read? I would like to add that I live in Argentina, and I do not have any buddhist temple near sadly, so I cannot go there to practice, learm or collab. I would appreciate advice on this. Thank you in advance.
    pastor answered: Dear Sirius, Thank you for your question. In terms of practice, you are doing a lot. We are very happy to read that you are doing all these beneficial practices. They will be very beneficial for you. What you are doing is very good already, the only thing that I would say is to make the Dorje Shugden sadhana consistent as well as the others. If you are doing the short Diamond Path sadhana, it includes the Vajrasatta meditations, so you don't have to do it separately. We just have some points to help you improve your practice: > First is whenever you do any of the practices, is it vital to make sure you take refuge, generate bodhicitta and practice the four immeasurables before each session. And then at the end of the session, make sure to dedicate. This seals the merit generated from your practice. This is very important as if we don't have the correct motivation at the beginning and dedicate it at the end, since the merit is not sealed, the positive potential is destroyed when we have disturbing emotions, especially anger. > The second is to be consistent in your practices and do them daily. If you cannot be consistent with the practices you are doing at the moment, then reduce what you are doing to make it simple, for example just the Diamond Path (which includes Tsongkhapa's Guru Yoga anyway). Then once you are consistent daily, later you can slow add in other practices and become consistent with them. > The third is to keep revising the teachings on these practices, understand the motivation, deepen your visualisations, etc. > In regards to your meditation, if you are doing breathing or concentration meditation, again, revise the teachings again and again to make your practice stronger and understand where you are on your meditational path. > You can also spend some time every day, maybe five or ten minutes contemplating the Lamrim teachings step by step. This itself is extremely transformational and will propel you along the spiritual path.     pastor answered: Dear Alby, The physical form representations of the Buddhas, including statues, are very special as each form of a Buddha represents not only the path to enlightenment, but the state of enlightenment itself. In fact, even just seeing a Buddha image plants imprints in our minds that will open when the conditions are right, to help us further along our spiritual path. So they are powerful and protective in and of themselves, as long as they have been created according to correct iconography. This last point is very important. That being said, images or statues are just pieces of metal or clay, etc. When statues are consecrated, they actually become the embodiement of the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma and Sangha). That's why making offerings and doing any virtuous activity (even cleaning them) generates merit for your spiritual journey. As embodiments of the Three Jewels there is no way that they can be possessed by spirits that haunt the owner of the statue. Traditionally, statues are made to be hollow and then filled with certain mantras and holy items, then consecrated. Following the traditional method will be the most effective to bless your statue properly. If your statue is hollow, at Kechara we offer a service to fill your statue properly with the correct mantras, etc. The service is part of Kechara Saraswati Arts. This can be a piece of paper with the mantra OM AH HUM written on it (either Tibetan or English is fine). Then roll this up and place in the statue. Otherwise you can use a pearl or semi-precious stone, etc. While statues themselves have protective power, when they are left empty there is a certain type of spirit that come to reside inside a statue as it is completely hollow. It's a spirit that likes hollow places. However, this type of spirit is not usually malicious or harmful. But that is one of the reasons a statue is never left hollow. Once the filling is done, the traditional ceremonies of consecration known as Soongdrup Puja (to bless the insertion items) and the Rabney Puja (to fully consecrate the statues) are performed, which we also offer https://www.vajrasecrets.com/rabney-soongdrup-consecration-puja-fund For those who cannot have the pujas done for whatever reason, you can actually bless the statues yourself. But this type of spirit cannot haunt the person, etc, in that sense. It simply resides in the statue. The reason why statues are blessed or consecrated is so that they embody the Three Jewels, they become immense objects of merit making and protection from spirits, negativity, etc. So, if you do have a statue or are thinking of an inviting a statue, the best would be to have it filled and consecrated properly. However, even if you cannot, you can do the blessing yourself. There is no need to worry about a statue being haunted if not consecrated by a monk before you invite it or bring home. In fact, if you have a personal practice, at the end of your practice you can dissolve your visualisation into the statue, to bless it. This actually makes your statue much more powerful than consecration alone. You basically bless your statue through your own daily practice. I hope this information helps. Thank you.

Welcoming our lineage Gurus to our Penang Chapel today! Pastor Seng Piow explained the significance of having Guru Tree and introduced to us our lineage lamas, Buddhas, deities, protectors and etc.
Umze for the day was Siew Hong. She's just been with us for slightly more than a year now but she's proven her capability in leading the puja. Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night.
