The Collapse of Waterfall Feature

Caught on Tape: Watch how the waterfall feature collapsed

(By Pastor Loh Seng Piow)

This was the waterfall feature of the fish pond in Kechara Forest Retreat, it was being built to keep fishes, especially fishes that His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche always rescues from pet shops which kept the fishes in poor condition, and also for animal liberation(放生池).

The fish pond consisted of three-part ponds and a waterfall feature. It was supposed to be completed within a short period of time as there was no heavy consturction involved, however the contractors that were in-charged of building the fish pond were not up to standard – not only did they not keep to the promised timeline, the quality of the work was poor.

When the work dragged on for weeks, Rinpoche became concerned, not only that the ongoing work affected the daily operation of the people near the fish pond, Rinpoche was also worried that the shoddy work would harm the fishes later, for example the fish pond may crack later, or the drainange around the fish pond was not properly done and mud and debris would be washed into the fish pond and pollute the pond, probably killing the fishes too.

So, a few days ago, Rinpoche met with Liaison Beng Kooi and Liaison Henry who were overseeing the construction of the fish pond. Rinpoche insisted on stopping the construction work because Rinpoche had a bad feeling about it. Rinpoche did not say exactly what would happen, but it was a recurring and constant bad feeling that the fish pond work should be stopped immediately. Beng Kooi and Henry, with their consistent guru devotion and 100% faith in Rinpoche, agreed to give the stop-work order without much hesitation, although they did not know and did not see anything so serious about the fish pond that the work needed to be halted, but they followed Rinpoche’s advice anyway simply because they trusted Rinpoche whole-heartedly, as they always did.

Then on the next day, the first day which no worker was working on the fish pond after so many weeks of continuous work, at around 6:40pm evening time, something bizarre happened – the waterfal feature collapsed out of a sudden on its own. There was nobody near the structure when it collapsed so there was no human interference (watch the video recorded by CCTV camera).

Once again, as in many many other incidents before this, Rinpoche had predicted something happening precisely and gave instruction in time to prevent further damage and loss, and in this case, the loss of human lives. Imagine if there were workers working around and under the structure at that moment, which they usually did in the past few weeks and even the day before, because it was still within their working hours, then someone might already be crushed and injured, or dead.

Rinpoche has this unusual ability to sense something before it happens, be it good or bad, and combined with the students’ 100% faith to carry out Rinpoche’s advice from His feelings, things will always come out beneficial in the sense of disasters averted, and lives preserved, no matter how bizarre and improbable Rinpoche’s initial advice may seem.

Therefore, Trust Rinpoche, 100%. We can NEVER go wrong by trusting Rinpoche and have complete faith in His words and advice.

Wow, i have to say, this is quite amazing that Rinpoche is able to sense when bad things are going to happen. I couldn’t imagine what would have happened if the work at the waterfall was not stopped. Someone could have gotten injured, or worst..could have died. Rinpoche saved the workers lives. We must always have trust in our guru, no matter what they say.

  4. edward ooi on Jun 20, 2013 at 4:03 pm

Dear Rinpoche, my Dad told me that before the waterfall feature collapses Andrew saw wind pushed down the feature and found out that the feature is hollow. And it’s very rare for wind to be able to blow down a feature even if it’s hollow. The wind must be very strong and the workers are very lucky too.

I am new to this blog but have a lifetime experience taking care of tropical fish. I would like to ask a question – perhaps this pond is not destined to be there?

As I understand it, the pond is meant for rescued, poorly-treated tropical fish and I support this 100% noble goal. However, there needs to be more thought, deeper thought about the objective of having this pond and if the objective will be met.

First, as nature has it, not all tropical fish can get along or live in similar conditions. So if we were rescuing guppies together with other larger or even worse predator fish, then this large pond will not do. For example, you can watch the invasion of Asian carp in US waters and its destruction of original species. Some of the predator fish sold at pet shops are the tetras, zebras, even the “angel” fish and to a certain extent cichlids. They cannot be mixed up in one big pond. Based on experience, mollies, guppies, swordtails, yes they get along fine.

Second, how are we going to transport these rescued fish and bring them all the way to the centre without killing them in the process. Not easy in my humble opinion. Need oxygen, even sedatives, and will contribute to CO2 emissions (transport).

Third, you will need a huge filter system (standard recommendation is one-third the volume of the pond itself) which will also require high electricity consumption pumps to purify the water continuosly. Believe me, it will not be cheap to operate.

Fourth, having such a big pond is like putting all apples in one basket. One rotten one may wipe out the whole pond if pristine, hygenic conditions are not maintained.

So please do have a re-thought about this pond. May be better to have people like me (I have a 10,000 gallon Koi-only pond) to foster these ill-treated fish. P.S. I have room for about another 10 small Koi to foster.

The featured waterfall falls, lucky no one there working, if not, you just imagine the concrete falls on that person, he will either hurt badly maybe dying.

This is not the first time Rinpoche gave unexpected instruction like this, and every time it came out to be true and many unwanted incident has been avoided.

Beside Rinpoche giving instruction, there also must have student to take it seriously and has 100% devoted, then only things will work out accordingly, that’s why in our spiritual path, guru devotion is very important or else, this spiritual path will be very difficult to proceed as we will keep falling down when we go against the teacher’s instruction.

  8. Jimmy Choy on May 29, 2013 at 5:08 pm

interesting… this has broaden my mind

  9. Lim (KH JB) on May 28, 2013 at 1:33 pm

Thanks Seng Piow for the sharing, Beng Kooi and Henry show us the best example of Guru Devotion.

If we want 100% result then we should believe 100% to Guru.

  10. Jessica Yap on May 27, 2013 at 6:03 pm

The video sort of scared me! Thank Buddha nobody was hurt.. What a close call. BK and Henry listened to Rinpoche’s instruction and it helped save lives!

Another case of how Rinpoche saved lives. There are countless stories on how Rinpoche helped others and made a difference in their lives. When our samaya with our Guru is clean, our Guru will be help us in any way they can and also when we just believe in our Guru and listen to His instructions, we will be ‘protected’ for sure.

Understanding the 50 Stanzas of Guru Devotion is instrumental in our spiritual growth especially so if we have taken refuge with our Guru.

    Thank you for sharing, Rinpoche!

Thank you Rinpoche for alerting Liaison Beng Kooi and Liaison Henry to stop working at fish pond construction site.

  12. Elsie Toy on May 23, 2013 at 7:54 am

Wow, thank you Rinpoche for stop work advice to Beng Kooi and Henry. Most important is no-beings was hurt in the process. If it has been built and the accident were to happened later then there will be casualties. Thank you Rinpoche for preventing an accident way in advance where no one is hurt and no lives taken. Thank you Beng Kooi and Henry.

  13. June Tang (KHJB) on May 21, 2013 at 2:48 pm

Thank you Seng Piow for sharing this post.Yes,we should follow Rinpoche’s instruction 100% because there is reason behind which might beyond our wisdom to understand it.Thank you Beng Kooi and Hery follow Rinpoche’s instruction, there was no lives sacrifice in this incident.Thank you Rinpoche’s compassion, kindness and always caring for all peoples!!

  14. Felix Kong on May 21, 2013 at 1:19 pm

We are so lucky that have bless and protection from Rinpoche . We can prevent hurt in any accident by 100% faith in Rinpoche , this case had proven that 100% trust Rinpoche and we are 100% safe . May Rinpoche long life and healthy .

  15. Jutika Lam on May 20, 2013 at 9:29 pm

Whew….. I am just so glad that not even a single life was hurt in this very very serious incident that could have killed and injured many people especially the workers working on the Fish Pond.

Though it is very sad to know that something Rinpoche has wanted the most was a big fish pond for the fishes he has rescued from pet shops to have a big place for hem to swim around and play we all have to except the fact that because of the shoddy work done by the contractors the waterfall feature of this fish pond has fell and has caused much damaged as well as money wasted.

I truly agree that if we listen to Rinpoche and trust Rinpoche 100% and follows his instructions there can only be nothing but lives saved, more resources and time wasted saved.

It’s amazing how powerful Rinpoche is to be able to sense bad things about to happen and yet he will not try and show off his great powers but to keep it as small as possible so not to show any pride.

I hope that the Fish Pond Waterfall Feature will soon be rebuilt (this time with more experienced and better people) so that more fishes will not have to suffer in small fish tanks anymore.

Thank You Seng Piow for sharing.

  16. Davin on May 20, 2013 at 9:20 pm

Thankfully no one was around when this incident had happened. It was because the liaisons had strong faith in Rinpoche have prevent tragedy to happen and they have saved the situation with no one being hurt. Always have complete faith and trust in Rinpoche advice.
    Thank you Rinpoche

  17. Soon Huat on May 19, 2013 at 11:00 pm

Thanks Rinpoche for stopping the tragedy happened and saving the workers’s life or anybody would work close by. Human life is so precious and priceless.
Thanks Beng Kooi and Henry for trusting Rinpoche 100%. It will never go wrong to trust our Guru.

  18. Low KHJB on May 19, 2013 at 10:52 pm

Thank you Seng Piow for the sharing. It was most fortunate that the liaisons had strong faith in our Guru to avoid a disaster from occurring at the KFR.
The workers for the contractor of the waterfall should thank Rinpoche for halting the work at the site and the contractor should compensate for the damages gladly as it did not involve human lives for their negligence.
Thank you Rinpoche for your guidance.

  19. Lucas Roth on May 19, 2013 at 4:54 pm

i am sooooooooo happy that nobody got hurt and that Rinpoche could see it coming and stopped building there, if not someone could have been injured or killed. thank you Rinpoche for seeing this coming and warning the people to stop.

  20. Datuk May on May 18, 2013 at 11:42 pm

So often, Rinpoche will tell us something or to do something and with all our delusions, we tend to question. Not only do we suffer from delusion but utmost stupidity.

Thank you Beng Kooi and Henry for showing such trust and saved the situation with no one being hurt.

Most of all thank you Rinpoche for always protecting and caring for all of us.

  21. beatrix ooi on May 18, 2013 at 12:30 am

This is one of the many accurate predictions Rinpoche has predicted throughout all these years, I’m glad that no one was hurt during the incident. The collapsing of the waterfall is really erratic, no one would ever know that it’s gonna fall and will keep working on it. If Rinpoche hasn’t asked to stop the construction, things may have gone worse.
Thank You for sharing Seng Piow.

  22. William on May 17, 2013 at 6:16 pm

Just in the nick of time the construction of the fish pond was stopped by Liaisons BK and Henry. If not, there will definitely be people hurt when the waterfall feature topples over. This is because they have been working till late night everyday to rush to finish up the job. Maybe that is why they have not checked on the quality of work and stability of the structure.

Nevertheless, what we can learn from this is that we should have full trust in our Guru like what BK and Henry has. Just follow what the Guru says and it will not be wrong. This case in hand is a good example.

  23. Cliff on May 17, 2013 at 1:44 pm

This is an example of how irresponsible some workers are, their job as construction workers do not consider the consequences of their craftsmanship. People’s lives could be at danger and even their own. I’m glad no one was around when this incident had happened, a huge crisis avoided. It’s amazing how Rinpoche had sense such an occurance would happen and it had reduced the amount of damage that could have possibly been done. I hope the damage can be easily rectified soon. It’s a very good thing this was captured on CCTV, clear proof of Rinpoche’s clairvoyance. Thankfully no one was hurt. I hope Rinpoche is feeling better.

  24. Patsy on May 17, 2013 at 1:11 pm

Because of Henry and Beng Kooi trust and faith in Rinpoche and following Rinpoche’s instructions, no lives were lost in this incident.

Sometimes it may seem weird why Rinpoche give a certain advise/instruction, but no matter how insensible we perceived it, just trust Rinpoche and abide to the instructions. We can never go wrong following our Guru’s advice.

  25. DR on May 17, 2013 at 11:02 am

This is just one of the many many advices Rinpoche has so compassionately given us through the many many methods Rinpoche has to devise due to our deluded minds. Sometimes through humour, sometimes through ‘normal tone’, sometimes through examples, sometimes through wrathful means, etc.

Sometimes when advice is not adhered to, we had to learn it the hard way. Luckily the Project Managers Beng Kooi and Henry followed to the T. There was no lives sacrificed nor hurt in this accident.

  26. grace (KHJB) on May 17, 2013 at 9:22 am

Thank you Rinpoche, Thank you BK and Henry for the 100% trust to Rinpoche, it have prevent further loss especially human life.It was blessing no one were hurt in the collapse.i fully agree trust Rinpoche 100%, we can NEVER go wrong.

  27. Adrian Cho on May 17, 2013 at 1:05 am

Wow…. This is really so scary, that the waterfall collapse itself, just like someone pushing it on the back till falling down, but watch on this video at CCTV, it is no ones around at there… Luckily nobody around there that time, If not it will really get serious injured. All safe and really bless.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this interesting post and video.

  28. Thierry on May 17, 2013 at 12:59 am

    Ayooohhhh….

I am not surprised at all to read how Rinpoche knew that there was danger and acted to avert it.
    Thank you Rinpoche. Thank you.

If anyone reading this is surprised, then be more surprised, positively surprised, and read about Tsem Tulku Rinpoche on this blog, with an open mind and no pre-conceived ideas, just read facts and related stories.

Then when you have been surprised again and wonder what? How? Why? Be curious and learn something new and maybe useful for now, for later, for you, for those you love, for all those you care about and beyond. Discover Dharma and one of its great Teacher right here with us today. It does not hurt and it always is a feast to open up our mind wider, it does not hurt, on the contrary, it heals!

I am not surprised to read that liaisons Beng Kooi and Henry did trust Rinpoche. They are both inspirations to me.
Thank you Beng Kooi and Henry for trusting our lama.

Only now am I worried for the fishes that are supposed to find a refuge within Rinpoche’s care.
    What will happen to them?

Very fortunate for me and friends to have visited these four most worthy pilgrimage sites as mentioned in this blog post. Lumbini where the birthplace of Prince Siddharta Gautama later known as Buddha Shakyamuni, Bodh Gaya the place where Prince Siddharta Gautama reached enlightenment, Sarnath the place where Buddha Shakyamuni turned the Wheel of Dharma for the first time and finally Kushinagar the place where Buddha Shakyamuni entered Parinirvana. So blessed managed to visit all these Holy places just before the lockdown because of the covid pandemic.
Thank you Rinpoche and Novka Kuaranita for this interesting sharing, so as more people be inspired to go.

In the eyes of many people, giving doesn’t count unless it’s completely selfless. In reality, though, giving isn’t sustainable when it’s completely selfless. Tsem Rnpoche is one truly Lama who gives silently without hope of praise and reward. Rinpoche gives selflessly to awaken the sleeping humanity in one’s heart. Spreading love and caring everywhere as Rinpoche goes had inspired many of us. There is nothing more beautiful things we can do. If we ever had the chance of making a big impact on the life of someone else, we know how wonderful it can feel to help someone.
A beautiful story of a selfless Lama who have a heart of gold.

Rinpoche read all notes, letters, and cards that was sent to his labrang. It never comes to my mind at all whether or not our guru Tsem Rinpoche saw, ate, or liked our offerings. All I know that Rinpoche knew for sure what we are doing. I am one of the many that Rinpoche had gave me gifts through all these years. Feeling happy and blessed with what I received. Thank you Rinpoche with folded hands. May Rinpoche have a swift return.
Thank you Anila for this wonderful sharing for many of us to have a better insight understanding of a great Lama.

Reading this article reminds me of my trip there in 2019 just before the lock down. I am glad I made it there as encouraged by our Guru Tsem Rinpoche to go on pilgrimage to Holy places instead of visiting places of interest. It’s a once a life time experienced for me. Went on pilgrimage to Tibet in 2019 and to Sera Choding Hermitage of Lama Tsongkhapa and few other Holy places as well. Sera Choding Hermitage was also the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. It was one of Tsongkhapa’s principal retreat centers, where he gave many of his most important teachings and where he composed one of his most famous works.
Fortunate to go to Kushinagar where Buddha Shakyamuni entered Clear Light , and seeing the Ramabhar Stupa, where the cremation place of Buddha Shakyamuni, and a colossal statue of Lord Buddha at the Matha Kuar feeling blessed indeed. Another holy place as mentioned in the blog is Wu Tai Shan. It is a popular pilgrimage as well. Mount Wutai with its five flat peaks is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China. This Holy place is associated with the rising sun which signifies birth and renewal. Due to this interpretation, it is often regarded as the most sacred of the Five Great Mountains. Went there too much earlier with Kecharians friends. Minhitale Buddha Statue in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, another Holy place. Historically recorded as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura was also the center of Theravada Buddhism for many centuries and has been a major Buddhist pilgrimage site with ruins of many ancient Buddhist temples. A place worth going but I have not visited yet which I love to go some day.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing.

A strong inspiring story that will touch our heart and soul. Reading and watching those videos in this blog post will definitely inspire and motivate us all. Bill Porter was an American having spent much of his life studying and translating Chinese religious and philosophical texts. He is a translator of Chinese texts, primarily Taoist and Buddhist, including poetry and sūtras. Bill Porter stepped into the ancient Chinese literary world, which changed everything. To many Chinese, he is known as Red Pine and the author of popular books on Chinese hermits and ancient poets. Many had wonder if the Buddhist hermit tradition still existed in China, not until Bill Porter discovered that the hermit tradition is very much alive. So many insights into life in China, and the Buddhist renewal after the cultural revolution the historical refuge of ancient hermits. Dozens of monks and nuns continue to lead solitary lives in quiet contemplation of their faith deep in the mountains. Inspiring each of them , living as simple as possible with what they have. That’s a beautiful understanding of Chinese culture, a rare happening , and should be cherished by all who love the Chinese classics .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Wow this great Lama the third Purchok incarnation the Lozang Tsultrim Jampa Gyatso who had served as tutor to both the Twelfth and the Thirteenth Dalai Lamas . He studied under a number of great masters and became a competent scholar at a very young age. His collected works covering subjects such as commentary on logics, rituals, and biography were compiled into texts. Interesting read.

The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek sun-god Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes, on the Greek island. An interesting mythology behind this huge statue. It was built between the years 292-280 BCE, to honour the Ancient Greek god of the Sun, Helios recording to history. The people of the city of Rhodes in Greece were saved from a terrible siege and that’s where this statue was built. The Greek mythology was strongly influenced by the ancient Egyptian myths. Sound interesting. Rhodes has been famous since antiquity as the site of Colossus of Rhodes, and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This ancient town is a step back in time and is one of the biggest best-preserved Medieval settlements of Europe. It’s the oldest populated medieval city in Europe with some 5000 people living inside the castle walls. Worth a visit to see for ourselves the beauty of this ancient town with many myth stories .
Thank you Rinpoche and Gen. Lobsang Phuljung for this wonderful sharing.

Each of us have a dark story to tell from the past. Reading again this interesting short posts of personal experiences with HE the 25th Tsem Rinpoche by Gen. Lobsang Phuljung . Black magic spells for revenge are an advanced and destructive form of magic that can manipulate or hurt other people. Everybody has been in a scenario where vengeance appeared to be the perfect idea for resolving a conflict. Even if we employ these curses and spells for revenge we are the ones who gets hurt as well. Negatively impacts our physical health by raising our blood pressure, trigger defensiveness and it turns into a destructive force that can harm ourselves. Life can only be understood backwards but it must be lived forwards. May these life experience provide us the inspiration we need to go on in life while learning from it.
Thank you Gen. Lobsang Phuljung for sharing this untold story with us.

We should feel gratitude for all that was given to us. The highest giving would be dharma. From those who have given us dharma, we should show a humble and sincere attitude. Always remember their kindness by practicing and applying. Only with dharma can we find genuine lasting happiness. The person who gave us genuine happiness through teaching us dharma should be remembered, celebrated, respected and be shown gratitude always.

The Sangha has kept Buddhist texts safe over the centuries and has interpreted and taught Buddhist philosophy. The Sangha has also provided inspiration and guidance on how to live a good Buddhist life. Being one of the three jewels of Buddhism, Sangha is an integral part of this community. We turn to these three jewels when we need to feel safety .Sangha is an equally important part of Buddhism where they provides a harbour in time of distress, and at the time of distractions. They help each other to make the journey smooth and spread kindness to everyone around them. It is believed that while walking the path, they will helps everybody to visualize goals clearly and aids in understanding the meaning of life in a better way. Beautiful article by Thich Nhat Hanh explaining the essence of a sangha.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing

Yunnan is a province in southern China, bordering Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam as well China is a multi-religious country. Taoism, Buddhism, Islamism, Protestantism and Catholicism are the main stream religions in China. Reading this article again and again feeling glad as the practice of Dorje Shugden had spread to many more places. Showing that it is not a minor practice after-all. Its flourishing to the ten direction. Dorje Shugden stupa is located right in the middle of the beautiful and sacred snow-capped mountains. Yulong Snow Mountain is a famous scenic area in Yunnan, after all. Since then it had attracted many locals and tourist .Looking at those pictures tells all. I have visited Yulong Snow Mountain but not been to see that new monastery where the sacred stupa is built. Hopefully I could visit someday.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

  • What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
