Rinpoche in funerals

(By Pastor Loh Seng Piow)

Losing our loved ones is one of the most traumatic and saddest events of our lives, and His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche always did the best He could in funerals, not only to bless the mind of the deceased and let them have a …good rebirth by performing powerful rituals, Rinpoche also consoled the family of the deceased by giving them Dharma talk to help them deal with their loss. At times, Rinpoche would also give them statues, pendants, chakras etc. to connect them deeper to the Dharma.

These are some of the continuous acts of kindness which we see of Rinpoche behind-the-scenes, when Rinpoche is not on the Dharma throne teaching, we see how Rinpoche spends every minute of every day thinking, working and acting for the benefit of his students, friends and people around Him, many of whom he hardly knows.

The heartbreak of grief is the hardest. The death of a loved one who was a meaningful part of our life can absolutely lead to significant shifts. Those people in deep sorrow at the loss of a loved one need mental support and a lift up. Having Rinpoche blessing the mind of the deceased and let them have a …good rebirth is really beautiful indeed. That’s the time the family of the departed needs most the company of friends and so forth. The behind scenes of Rinpoche did was really touching not only the Dharma teachings, Rinpoche will go all the way to help the deceased family, spending every minute of every day thinking, working and acting for the benefit of all around him and many of whom he hardly knows.
Thank you Seng PIow for sharing the look behind the scenes of what Rinpoche does.

Rinpoche did everything good for every sentient being he came across and even those he didn’t come across in his prayers. Bodhicitta doesn’t fail anyone. Thank you Rinpoche for coming to this world in this time. Or maybe I should say I am glad I know of you in this lifetime of mine.

  3. David Lai on Nov 26, 2013 at 7:33 pm

The best is for people to do Dharma work / practice. Rinpoche said that it is because of relatives, loved ones or the people who are dying have been doing Dharma work and that he was able to dedicate their merits accrued from the Dharma work so that the Dharma Protector is able to lead the newly deceased to a favorable rebirth.

In this case, Rinpoche has been doing the prayers to dedicate the merits and invoke the Dharma Protector to assist the deceased. However, we don’t necessarily need the Lama, anybody especially those who are close or related to the deceased who know the prayers, can do it for them. Rinpoche had said this before and for many of his senior students, he would tell them to do the prayers instead and he said that would be more powerful and effective to help the deceased.

Bereavement care is one of the toughest to offer to others. The reasons being 1) the sensitivity of the moments make it difficult for us to express ourselves 2) we also fear our own death. 3) it is tiring

We can see that Rinpoche is tireless in giving love, care and kindness to others in these difficult situations. This is a sign that Rinpoche’s compassion is overwhelming and authentic.

    Thank you, Rinpoche.

Thank you Seng PIow for sharing the look behind the scenes of what Rinpoche does. Many people are very curious what Rinpoche does in his time, Rinpoche works non stop with his ideas, advise to bring dharma to many and help those who are making life’s final journey.

  7. Cliff on Sep 26, 2013 at 12:55 am

Rinpoche has never stopped caring for others, towards strangers or friends Rinpoche treated everyone without discrimination. Rinpoche wouldn’t judge anyone but only goal is to help them. Rinpoche has always been so compassionate towards others and realizes how painful it is for someone to lose their loved one and does what ever Rinpoche can to relieve that pain and also for the deceased to take a better rebirth. With Rinpoche’s bad back, Rinpoche would still get up and travel to the family and do what ever Rinpoche can. Rinpoche’s compassion for others is limitless. Thank you for being an inspiration to us all Rinpoche. Rinpoche really leads by example and shows us the potential in all of us that it isnt that hard to be compassionate towards others.

  8. AdelineTan on Sep 26, 2013 at 12:40 am

In time of grief Rinpoche will always console and give advice to the bereaved family members and sometime Rinpoche will be there to perform the powerful pujas to bless the mind of the deceased and helped the deceased to get good and swift rebirth and connect to the dharma. We are so fortunate to have a living Bodhisattva near us. Thank you Seng Piow for sharing.

Rinpoche is there in our time of need, when we really need him he will be there. he loves us and we all love him so much for all the kind thinks that he has done for us. thank you for being there to help us Rinpoche

  10. Grace Leu(KHJB) on Sep 22, 2013 at 5:50 pm

Rinpoche always show the selfless care to others, , regardless he known them or not.Rinpoche always make sure the people around him always got the good care without any agenda. Rinpoche is our good example to follow to show the care for other and help them to overcome difficult time through Dharma.

  11. Albert Ratchaga on Sep 20, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Rinpoche always do a lot behind the scene, many people do not know and realize the amount of compassion he has towards the sentient beings and his care towards them. Rinpoche always do a lot of prayers daily and dedicate all these merits to the people around so they can have more chance to practice Dharma and gain certain attainment in their lifetime. To be very honest. Rinpoche do not need all of us to spread Dharma, but we need him to practice Dharma, if without Rinpoche, we won’t have what we have today, our Dharma knowledge, our spiritual practice, and the betterment of ourselves as compare to last time. Rinpoche is always there for everyone when they are in need, he can give up so much for us, then what else we can lose in life? whatever attachment we have will eventually be lost one day, so why not learn to let go now and be easier in our later part of life.

What do we want in life? many of us do not realize how important Dharma is to us, we always take life for granted, even though we hear many times people around had cancer, leukemia, died of accident, etc, etc.. But we are just so dumb that can’t even relate the death to ourselves even though it has presented so near to our eyes already, we are going to lie in that little box one day, so what else we still cannot give up? we definitely cannot live forever, putting ourselves in the deceased situation, feel how they feel, then contemplate and realize our action.. we must do something before it is too late..

  12. wansan on Sep 20, 2013 at 5:13 pm

The only thing we hope for after the person has passed on is to wish that the person will take a good rebirth and hopefully meet with the Dharma in his/her next life. But many of us who hasn’t met with the Dharma wouldn’t know exactly what to do..

This is the time when Rinpoche appears to comfort the family members and to do prayers for the deceased. Rinpoche might not know the deceased personally but He still comes and gives blessings and prays for them to have good rebirth. How many of us would actually go to a stranger’s funeral and do that? In face, some of us don’t even want to attend the funeral because of various reasons.

Rinpoche only thinks of benefiting others at anytime and hence we are very blessed to have Rinpoche around during our hard times. Thank You Rinpoche _/\_

  13. Uncle Eddie on Sep 20, 2013 at 3:27 pm

The great consolation received by a person after such a loss, is the welcomed sight of a precious guru at his/her side, especially one who is a Rinpoche. Rinpoche is there not only to bless the mind of the deceased… but also to help them deal with their loss as said. To us all, Rinpoche is known to be a great Bodhisattva, a great being beyond the World and the Door for all Dharma! Om mani padmi hum.

  14. Jessica Yap on Sep 19, 2013 at 2:00 am

At the times where the deceased family are grieving, Rinpoche arrives with His love and care to console the family. Rnpoche brings with Him endless love and care to lessen the pain of the family of the deceased..

How many people do we know that walks the talk? I only know one significant person who truly cares for others and it has been happening for a long, long time.. The stories shared by the students are the ones known to us, I believe there are many more not publicized.. This significant person is non other than Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s compassion and care truly knows no bounds..

What’s even more amazing is that Rinpoche’s love and care transcends time, country, race, etcetc. Inspiring is an understatement.. Rinpoche is a true Buddha indeed! =)

Thank you for sharing, Seng Piow!
    And thank you Rnpoche!

Thank You Rinpoche. I am glad that I am part of Kechara and respect you as my Guru even though I have not yet had chance to take my Refuge Vow under you yet. I feel that Kechara is my house and you are my father (as my Guru, always guide and protect us). It is my personal feeling. I feel safe and protected in Kechara family.

  17. David Lai on Sep 18, 2013 at 5:34 pm

Rinpoche is dedicated towards others but he is also human and has his limitations naturally. Hence, Kechara organization, pastors and future Sangha would be his 1000 arms to reach out to people with kindness, compassion and more importantly with the Dharma. It is no longer a question whether Rinpoche is compassionate but whether we would like to be a part of this set of 1000 arms. We do not need to be physically close but we can find time, effort to be this set of 1000 arms to reach out and be a benefit to others.

  18. Andrew James Boon on Sep 18, 2013 at 5:08 pm

It is truly remarkable and how incredibly selfless Rinpoche is and this is just a peek at this compassionate trait that is prevalent in those of us blessed and privileged to call Rinpoche our Guru!

An exemplary figure of compassion and kindness who’s only purpose in life is to help other and spread the Dharma!

  19. sarahyap on Sep 18, 2013 at 2:25 pm

Rinpoche is always very perceptive towards other people’s needs… this is why Rinpoche attended these funerals to do pujas as there is no other time where a family is more confused and filled with grief.

While it is fortunate that the deceased are blessed by Rinpoche so that they can meet the Dharma in a new life… the ones that benefit the most spiritually are the family members because the advice they receive from Rinpoche will make a huge difference in their lives.

Thanks SP for sharing this. We are all very lucky that Rinpoche have a group of dedicated people to assist Rinpoche 24/7. If they were not around Rinpoche, we would not know how Rinpoche actually go out of the way to help others.

  20. Elsie Toy on Sep 18, 2013 at 1:47 pm

We are so lucky to have merits to meet our Kind guru Tsem Rinpoche who thinks only how to benefit others not just the living but also those who passed on. Rinpoche has given his 100% to save as many as he could from falling into the 3 lower realms during the funerals. Not only Rinpoche perform rituals, but Rinpoche also take care the feelings of the deceased family by giving them love, care and guiding everyone along the Dharma path. Thank you Rinpoche for all your loves and care. Thank you Seng Piow for your sharing on Rinpoche’s blog.

How compassionate our Guru is… always making sure that everyone is looked after; the deceased to take a good rebirth and those experiencing loss of their loved ones to let go of their pain …. And his compassion extends beyond. We are so fortunate to fall under his love and care. Thank you Rinpoche!

  24. Beatrix Ooi on Sep 17, 2013 at 10:43 pm

Rinpoche has always been very kind to others, no matter who they are and what they are. I remember that when my grandmother was dying in the hospital, Rinpoche came to visit her and after a few hours later, she passed away peacefully. My grandmother has always trusted Rinpoche after all the help and support that’s been given to us from time to time. I felt very fortunate for my beloved grandmother as before she passes away, she could meet someone so compassionate and powerful. I strongly believe that she has taken a good rebirth, Thank You Rinpoche.
Thank you for sharing Seng Piow.

Rinpoche always cares for others, even if they are not here anymore. When a guru comes and does pujas, this helps the deceased go to a better future life and all the family can benefit from the blessings. His presence will also give us strength to handle the death of our family member or friend.

Rinpoche is always very caring and during the saddest moment, Rinpoche will give advise to the immediate family on what to do and sometimes he will personally be there to perform puja for the dearly departed.

It is tremendous blessings to have Rinpoche perform puja for the departed to take a good and swift rebirth and be near the dharma. Rinpoche’s love and care for others is unconditional and we are very fortunate to have such a compassionate Guru living amongst us.

  29. Julien Roth on Sep 17, 2013 at 5:18 pm

Rinpoche is so kind. He does this because he knows that it is the right thing to do. And that it is a good thing to do. Everyone deserves such a kind Guru like this. A Guru who is kind and generous, a Guru that will help you at a time of need. Thank you for Sharing.

Thank you Rinpoche for being so compassion during our most difficult time, how fortunate we are to have a guru who are here all the time to teach us and to guide us. Thank you SP to sharing this blog post with us.

At this time of great sadness and loss, it is indeed a great blessing to have our precious guru performing puja for our beloved departed ones. His presence and advices also gives us strength to be strong n to be able to go through the 49days fully focused on what is good for our departed, to have a good rebirth. Needless to say, how blessed our departed ones are to have our Guru (who is already attained …a Buddha in human form to teach/benefit us) to perform pujas for their journey into their next rebirth. Thanks SP for this sharing as many will now know another aspect of how compassionate and caring Rinpoche is.

Very fortunate for me and friends to have visited these four most worthy pilgrimage sites as mentioned in this blog post. Lumbini where the birthplace of Prince Siddharta Gautama later known as Buddha Shakyamuni, Bodh Gaya the place where Prince Siddharta Gautama reached enlightenment, Sarnath the place where Buddha Shakyamuni turned the Wheel of Dharma for the first time and finally Kushinagar the place where Buddha Shakyamuni entered Parinirvana. So blessed managed to visit all these Holy places just before the lockdown because of the covid pandemic.
Thank you Rinpoche and Novka Kuaranita for this interesting sharing, so as more people be inspired to go.

In the eyes of many people, giving doesn’t count unless it’s completely selfless. In reality, though, giving isn’t sustainable when it’s completely selfless. Tsem Rnpoche is one truly Lama who gives silently without hope of praise and reward. Rinpoche gives selflessly to awaken the sleeping humanity in one’s heart. Spreading love and caring everywhere as Rinpoche goes had inspired many of us. There is nothing more beautiful things we can do. If we ever had the chance of making a big impact on the life of someone else, we know how wonderful it can feel to help someone.
A beautiful story of a selfless Lama who have a heart of gold.
Thank you Rinpoche and Anila for this sharing.

Rinpoche read all notes, letters, and cards that was sent to his labrang. It never comes to my mind at all whether or not our guru Tsem Rinpoche saw, ate, or liked our offerings. All I know that Rinpoche knew for sure what we are doing. I am one of the many that Rinpoche had gave me gifts through all these years. Feeling happy and blessed with what I received. Thank you Rinpoche with folded hands. May Rinpoche have a swift return.
Thank you Anila for this wonderful sharing for many of us to have a better insight understanding of a great Lama.

Reading this article reminds me of my trip there in 2019 just before the lock down. I am glad I made it there as encouraged by our Guru Tsem Rinpoche to go on pilgrimage to Holy places instead of visiting places of interest. It’s a once a life time experienced for me. Went on pilgrimage to Tibet in 2019 and to Sera Choding Hermitage of Lama Tsongkhapa and few other Holy places as well. Sera Choding Hermitage was also the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. It was one of Tsongkhapa’s principal retreat centers, where he gave many of his most important teachings and where he composed one of his most famous works.
Fortunate to go to Kushinagar where Buddha Shakyamuni entered Clear Light , and seeing the Ramabhar Stupa, where the cremation place of Buddha Shakyamuni, and a colossal statue of Lord Buddha at the Matha Kuar feeling blessed indeed. Another holy place as mentioned in the blog is Wu Tai Shan. It is a popular pilgrimage as well. Mount Wutai with its five flat peaks is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China. This Holy place is associated with the rising sun which signifies birth and renewal. Due to this interpretation, it is often regarded as the most sacred of the Five Great Mountains. Went there too much earlier with Kecharians friends. Minhitale Buddha Statue in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, another Holy place. Historically recorded as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura was also the center of Theravada Buddhism for many centuries and has been a major Buddhist pilgrimage site with ruins of many ancient Buddhist temples. A place worth going but I have not visited yet which I love to go some day.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing.

A strong inspiring story that will touch our heart and soul. Reading and watching those videos in this blog post will definitely inspire and motivate us all. Bill Porter was an American having spent much of his life studying and translating Chinese religious and philosophical texts. He is a translator of Chinese texts, primarily Taoist and Buddhist, including poetry and sūtras. Bill Porter stepped into the ancient Chinese literary world, which changed everything. To many Chinese, he is known as Red Pine and the author of popular books on Chinese hermits and ancient poets. Many had wonder if the Buddhist hermit tradition still existed in China, not until Bill Porter discovered that the hermit tradition is very much alive. So many insights into life in China, and the Buddhist renewal after the cultural revolution the historical refuge of ancient hermits. Dozens of monks and nuns continue to lead solitary lives in quiet contemplation of their faith deep in the mountains. Inspiring each of them , living as simple as possible with what they have. That’s a beautiful understanding of Chinese culture, a rare happening , and should be cherished by all who love the Chinese classics .

Wow this great Lama the third Purchok incarnation the Lozang Tsultrim Jampa Gyatso who had served as tutor to both the Twelfth and the Thirteenth Dalai Lamas . He studied under a number of great masters and became a competent scholar at a very young age. His collected works covering subjects such as commentary on logics, rituals, and biography were compiled into texts. Interesting read.
    Thank you Rinpoche .

Dharma teaches us the ultimate method, the ultimate way of release from samsara. When you receive the Dharma teachings — when you receive the method and you practice it — you will be able to free yourself from sufferings.

Stinginess is the ticket to a long stay in the sad and barren lands of poverty.

Making happy offerings to enlightened and ordinary friends is a recipe for spontaneously arising generosity and the joys it causes.

The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek sun-god Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes, on the Greek island. An interesting mythology behind this huge statue. It was built between the years 292-280 BCE, to honour the Ancient Greek god of the Sun, Helios recording to history. The people of the city of Rhodes in Greece were saved from a terrible siege and that’s where this statue was built. The Greek mythology was strongly influenced by the ancient Egyptian myths. Sound interesting. Rhodes has been famous since antiquity as the site of Colossus of Rhodes, and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This ancient town is a step back in time and is one of the biggest best-preserved Medieval settlements of Europe. It’s the oldest populated medieval city in Europe with some 5000 people living inside the castle walls. Worth a visit to see for ourselves the beauty of this ancient town with many myth stories .
Thank you Rinpoche and Gen. Lobsang Phuljung for this wonderful sharing.

Each of us have a dark story to tell from the past. Reading again this interesting short posts of personal experiences with HE the 25th Tsem Rinpoche by Gen. Lobsang Phuljung . Black magic spells for revenge are an advanced and destructive form of magic that can manipulate or hurt other people. Everybody has been in a scenario where vengeance appeared to be the perfect idea for resolving a conflict. Even if we employ these curses and spells for revenge we are the ones who gets hurt as well. Negatively impacts our physical health by raising our blood pressure, trigger defensiveness and it turns into a destructive force that can harm ourselves. Life can only be understood backwards but it must be lived forwards. May these life experience provide us the inspiration we need to go on in life while learning from it.
Thank you Gen. Lobsang Phuljung for sharing this untold story with us.

We should feel gratitude for all that was given to us. The highest giving would be dharma. From those who have given us dharma, we should show a humble and sincere attitude. Always remember their kindness by practicing and applying. Only with dharma can we find genuine lasting happiness. The person who gave us genuine happiness through teaching us dharma should be remembered, celebrated, respected and be shown gratitude always.

The Sangha has kept Buddhist texts safe over the centuries and has interpreted and taught Buddhist philosophy. The Sangha has also provided inspiration and guidance on how to live a good Buddhist life. Being one of the three jewels of Buddhism, Sangha is an integral part of this community. We turn to these three jewels when we need to feel safety .Sangha is an equally important part of Buddhism where they provides a harbour in time of distress, and at the time of distractions. They help each other to make the journey smooth and spread kindness to everyone around them. It is believed that while walking the path, they will helps everybody to visualize goals clearly and aids in understanding the meaning of life in a better way. Beautiful article by Thich Nhat Hanh explaining the essence of a sangha.

Yunnan is a province in southern China, bordering Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam as well China is a multi-religious country. Taoism, Buddhism, Islamism, Protestantism and Catholicism are the main stream religions in China. Reading this article again and again feeling glad as the practice of Dorje Shugden had spread to many more places. Showing that it is not a minor practice after-all. Its flourishing to the ten direction. Dorje Shugden stupa is located right in the middle of the beautiful and sacred snow-capped mountains. Yulong Snow Mountain is a famous scenic area in Yunnan, after all. Since then it had attracted many locals and tourist .Looking at those pictures tells all. I have visited Yulong Snow Mountain but not been to see that new monastery where the sacred stupa is built. Hopefully I could visit someday.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
