Holy Place of Kuan Yin

Mt. Putuo lies to the east of Zhoushan City. Zhoushan City is situated on Zhoushan Island that in turn gives its name to a group of some four hundred small islands off the east coast of China in Zhejiang Province. These islands are in fact the peaks of submerged mountains and so rise steeply from the sea. Mt. Putuoshan dominates the small rhomboidal land mass with its total area of about 12.5 square kilometres (4.8 square miles). The mountain is of one of four in the country that are held sacred by Buddhists and it was here that over the centuries a once large Buddhist community was to evolve.

The island’s scenic beauty meant it was the perfect setting for temples and other religious buildings. In due course, it became known as the “Heaven of the Sea and Kingdom of the Buddhists”. In its heyday, the island had eighty-two temples and nunneries together with some one hundred and twenty-eight shelters that between them housed 4,000 Buddhist monks and nuns. Even today visitors to the island will encounter monks in their traditional robes as they walk along the many paths that criss-cross the picturesque landscape.

Mount Putuo is the home of Guanyin, and Guanyin is probably the single most popular name in China. Guanyin is the symbol of peace and mercy, and has become the spiritual support for many generations of Chinese believers. Over the long history, many folktales have been told about Mount Putuo and Guanyin.

In 863, there was a Japanese monk Huie visiting and studying on Mount Wutai in China. When it was the time for him to leave the mountain, he asked to take a Guanyin statue with him, to be worshiped in Japan. Huie carried the sacred statue carefully by himself, and traveled by land to Kaiyuan Temple at the port city of Ningbo. He planned to take a boat from here back to Japan. When he tried to board the boat, however, the Guanyin statue suddenly became heavy, and he couldn’t move it by himself. So he asked help and eventually about a dozen people worked together to lift the statue and put it on the boat. The boat soon arrived the lotus sea near Mount Putuo. To everyone’s surprise, the ocean that was smooth like silk turned into a vicious monster, and among the high waves, there were also countless iron lotus flowers scattered the ocean. There was no way the boat could sail further. At night, Huie had a dream. In the dream, a monk told him: “as long as you let me stay in this mountain, I’ll give you the wind that will send you back to Japan”. That woke Huie up and he told the dream to his companions. After worshiping Guanyin, they were able to move the boat to the shore of Mount Putuo, and Huie built a simple straw hut near Chaoyin cave to house the Guanyin statue. The boat was then able to leave the lotus sea, and Huie was back to Japan. Because the Guanyin statue didn’t want to leave for Japan, it was named “reluctant to go” Guanyin. A local resident, Mr. Zhang, learned the story and modified his own house into small temple. The Reluctant to Go Guanyin was moved to the temple and he named the temple Reluctant to Go Guanyin Temple.

People believe that it was Guanyin himself chose Mount Putuo as his place (Dojo) for teaching Buddhism. Not long, the story spread across China and east Asia. Because monk Huie was from Japan, the story was well believed in his home country. Since Tang Dynasty, there has been large amount of Guanyin pilgrims visiting Mount Putuo from Japan. Due to the popularity, later Mount Nazhi was established as a Guanyin Dojo in Japan, and it was modeled after Mount Putuo. Even so, Mount Putuo is still regarded as the original Guanyin Dojo. In September of 1993, the Japanese Guanyin scholars visited Mount Putuo for the third time, and they brought 33 Guanyin statues representing 33 Guanyin temples in Japan. These Guanyin statues are now worshiped inside Huie memorial.

There were three major renovations in Mount Putuo’s history. The largest renovation probably was in 1731 under Emperor Yongzheng. The renovation lasted three years and amassed over 2000 workers. It was also managed by the provincial governor directly, under the policy of “renew all that’s old, build all that’s lacking”.

Emperor also bestowed two white jade plaques with royal inscriptions, one each for Puji and Fayu temples. These unusual treatments was widely speculated as a reward to Mount Putuo for its help during the emperor’s throne succession. Yongzheng was the fourth son among the nine to succeed the throne. The competition was fierce. The story was that in 1720, Monk Zhenliuyuan became the abbot of Puji temple. During a routine teaching session, he singled out the 4th prince (Yongzheng), and gave him special prayers. That was two years before Yongzheng’s father passed away, and the fight inside the palace was still brewing. How did an abbot on a faraway island know the outcome at that time?

Everyone should visit this holy place of Guan Yin (also spelled Kuan Yin: Avalokitesvara) as a sacred pilgrimage site named Mt Putuo or Putuoshan in China.

Thank you so much for sharing the wonderfully informative article of the holy place of Kuan Yin. It’s allowed me to understand the popular mother Goddess of Chin. She is beloved goddess of over a billion Buddhist in the world over. This female divine also well
known as a great healer who can cure all illness.

I have seen her images in many forms, but Kuan Yin sitting on lotus is my favourite.
Respecting the hidden wisdom of ordinary people, we might see Kuan Yin devotion as a kind of skillful means used by the Buddha to bring the Dharma to such people in the midst of their suffering.

I am bless to see the pleasant vision of the huge statues of godmother Kuan Yin and the
beautiful scenery of the spiritual environment. Hope to visit this holy place once in the life time.

China is a very blessed place for Buddhists. There are four sacred places in China of the four different Buddhas. Mount Wu Tai is the abode of Manjushri; Mount Hua Yan is he abode of Ksirtigarbha; Mount E-mei is the abode of Samantabhadra; Mount Pu Xian is the abode of Chenrezig (Guan Yin).

Throughout history, many highly attained masters had made pilgrimage trips to these sacred mountains to pray, do retreat and pay homage to the Buddhas. These places are charged with lots of positive energy.

When we go to these places, we should make very good motivations and aspirations. The energy here might help to open our good karma to walk on the spiritual path or change our life for good.

This is indeed a wonderful place for pilgrimage to Kuan Yin, the Buddha of Compassion on the beautiful Mount Putuo. It is very meritorious to make a pilgrimage and pray at the feet of this very famous Buddha in China.

Please find many more inspirations for a pilgrimage here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/travel

And of course, if you happen to be in Malaysia, you can visit Kechara Forest Retreat in Bentong, on Chamang Road. A wonderful place with many sacred Buddha statues and much more for your blessing. Kechara Forest Retreat is open every day from 10am till 5pm.

Mount Putuo has been a pilgrimage site for over a thousand years and was one of the four sacred mountains of Buddhism throughout China. Mount Putuo is covered with many temples and monasteries, both large and small. The most visited by local and tourist are the Puji Temple, Fayu Temple, and Huiji Temple. Has became a center of Guanyin worship. There were many interesting story behind these Mount Putuo. I have not visited this beautiful Putuo island located southeast of Shanghai before, expensive though, it is worth visiting. There are many amazing Buddha statues here and Putuo Island is the home of GuanYing Buddha.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this interesting post.

This is a lovely magical story about a holy place of Kuan Yin. I do hope one day I can have the good fortune to make a pilgrimage to this place. Its important to go to pilgrimage places, such acts can inspire us on our path to feel the energy of the practitioners who gained realisations in those areas.

Thank you for posting such elaborate information here. The history and folktales is very interesting. The Shanghai group who went to for the Kechara Tea House opening was planning to go visit while in Shanghai. However, the drive was 6 hours there and another 6 hours back. That means we will need to stay overnight around the area of Mt Putou and time forbids. Also it would have been too tiring for the driver. Such a pity we didn’t make it to such a holy pilgrimage site. I was so looking forward to it. Hopefully sometime in the future, I will get to make a trip there as the pictures look very enticing.

Mount “Puto” – known as the home of Kuan Yin, denotes a symbol of peace, tranquility and mercy. Kuan Yin is likened to a spiritual “Shepherd-like-boddhicitta” who is always at hand to look after her flock of sheep and takes care that no sheep remains behind and that each one reaches safe shelter! She has become the spiritual of support for countless generations of believers(especially the chinese) over a long history of time. Kuan Yin is said to have pledged to teach, help, guide and lead all sentient beings to Buddhahood before she achieves her own. That is why her famous mantra, “Om mani padme hum” is so popular with the young and old, who somehow seems able to recite it consciously or unconsciously after a short span of time of teaching. It is said that the recitation of “Om mani padme hum” transmits the qualities of compassion, grace and strength of Kuan Yin’s wishes to help all beings. People of all walks of life, whether chinese or otherwise, should visit this holy site of Kuan Yin as a sacred pilgrimage. “OM MANI PADME HUM”.

In China in the city of Zhoushan on the island of Zhoushan. The many other small islands near Putuoshan. This is one of the four mountains which house all Buddhist temples and other religious buildings among its beautiful scenery. This houses many buddhist temples, centres where over 4000 monks and nuns live. When visitors walk around the island they can always can come face to face with the monks and nuns . I understand later that the Chinese also has built a very big Kuan Yin on the island. There was a teaching session in the temple when monk Zhenlinyuan was abbot of Puji temple. He had singled out Emperor Yongshen’s 4th son and gave him some prayers 2 years before the father Emperor Yongshen died But there was still a fight even when the Emperor has passed away. The picture of the big Kuan Yin statue towering above the island reminds me of the statue of Liberty in New York.

This Guan Yin is really magnificent. I had the privilege to visit Mt Putuoshan this year and love this island. The energy is so serene and positive. The temples are beautiful. Thank you Rinpoche for detailing out the history of the island. Such rich history and I can experience that the Chinese people are very spiritual even though a lot of culture and practices were destroyed/banned during the cultural revolution. China is the next place to be. It is really worth the 4:30 hours of travelling time to the island.

What a lovely post with such detailed information on history of the blessed Mount Putuo.

I have not visited this place, but after reading this post, I really do want to make it a point to visit.

It is amazing to me that so many magnificent spiritual places and monuments were built during the time of Kangxi Emperor(Yongzheng’s father) and Yongzheng Emperor. The famous Yonghegong Temple in Beijing which houses a huge Lama Tsongkhapa Statue is also built by these two Emperors. The father started the construction and the son completed it. Such strong karmic affinity that these two royalties share with Buddhism.

I read that during their reign, much spirituality blossomed in China. They were also known to be the most benevolent rulers in the history of China’s Emperors.

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing with us this splendid post. It is always such a pleasure reading Rinpoche’s Blog. I learn so much every single time. It is spiritual, educational and even fun!

    Thank you again.

Religion and politics are two of the hardest things to talk about. Living in a country , we should be given religious freedom to choose what we want to pray. But it not mean we are spy of that country. Disappointed the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) accuses Dorje Shugden practitioners as Chinese agents just because they practice Dorje Shugden. Rinpoche has been accused by the CTA . They said that said Rinpoche was a spy and an agent paid by China. All these were definite not true at all. Rinpoche had received the Dorje Shugden’s practice 30 years ago, been passed down from Rinpoche’s Guru. Many high lamas have been practising Dorje Shugden for the last 400 years, it is ridiculous to say they were Chinese spies too. All major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness. But sad the CTA ,having a fuss over it , and has created disharmony among Buddhist practitioners. It’s a matter of choice we choose to pray nothing political related to China. Just because we are Chinese , we are paid by the China , we are Chinese spies, that’s does not made sense at all. Regardless of our race or religion, we all want and need harmony. Hatred and conflict are often rooted in differences between people of different races and religions. We all need to respect people of different races as well as people of different faiths and religions.

An agreement for living together by mutual consent is a marriage vow . As a similar line of thought, we believe all actual facts and in reality how and why Dorje Shugden arosed. Dorje Shugden arosed as our enlightened Dharma Protector as promised to protects the Dharma teachings. It’s a commitment between Dorje Shugden and Gelugpa lineage for more then 400 years, still going stronger despite all those lies , controversy the Tibetan Leadership trying to create. The Tibetan Leadership is trying to break this strong relationship with all the allegations on Dorje Shugden. Many highly attained lamas and masters had propitiated for Dorje Shugden for years . They cannot be wrong in their practice after all. Dorje Shugde is not a devil or spirits as claimed by some. HH Dalai Lama already said its does not harm and we can practice. With the recent speech in India at Bodhgaya on 2nd January 2020, HH dalai Lama also said that if people wish to practise Dorje Shugden as a birth deity or land god (Tibetan: kye lha yul lha), THAT WOULD BE FINE.
Thank you Seow Choong Liang for the wonderful analogy to understand better.

Buddhist Temples of Siem Reap , Cambodia is amazing filled with incredible architecture, Khmer Culture. The beautiful temples in Siem Reap is a must-see place when visiting. Buddhist Temples in Siem Reap each year attracted millions of visitors, especially those in the expansive Angkor Archeological Park. Well listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992, there are about 50 Buddhist and Hindu temples dating back to the 12th century within its grounds. Simply amazing to see but I have not been there yet. Would wish to see for myself those beautiful ancient architectural temples.

Very rare and precious video , to see how much affection between our Lama and Dorje Shugden was. Its not planned and of a sudden , during Rinpoche visit to that monastery and hotel, Dorje Shugden taking trance . According to the practices of Tibetan Buddhism, there are several ways to induce the trance state including dancing and music. But this was different as Rinpoche was at the monastery, a monk sudden went into trance . In the hotel an oracle monk-in-training took spontaneous trance too. While in trance, Dorje Shugden suddenly entered the oracle-monk in both occasion. Its a blessing able to see the oracles from the video.

Beautiful Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, built in 1679, is the largest Gelug Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan province. Known as little Potala to many locals and tourist. Well this magnificent group builidngs of the monastery is so simply amazing. The main structure built in Tibetan style has a gold-covered copper roof similar to the one at the Potala Monastery in Lhasa. I was there few years back , looking at it is a blessing. It looks like a castle, a walled complex with group buildings including living quarters for monks and high lamas. I was so fortunate when I was there the monks were doing prayers . Listening to the prayers , with joy then in a tranquil place to dwell my soul.Offered some offerings to those beautiful Buddhas statues. Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, a hot destination in Yunnan, have been attracting thousands of locals and tourist yearly. A place worthy visiting and going on pilgrimage.

He then further his studies under many eminent lamas and been able to masters in the five major and five minor sciences. Panchen Sonam Drakpa studied the entire breadth of Sutra, Tantra and their various commentaries with great intensity and became one of the greatest tantric masters in Tibet. He was a great scholar served as abbot of the three main Gelug monasteries – Ganden Monastery, Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery. He composed many written works on various topics, amazingly his collected works spans fourteen volumes, which been still used today. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this heart-warming story . Well it is Dorje Shugden that showed Rinpoche to this Phelgyeling Monastery of all the monasteries at Kathmandu. Unplanned stop at the monastery led to meeting with an old kind monk. Rinpoche ‘s connection with Dorje Shugden was so strong and deep that it lead Rinpoche to the monastery that happens to practise Dorje Shugden. Wow… it must be from previous lives’ imprints that in this life, when Rinpoche needed help most at that odd hours, Dorje Shugden came calling. Rinpoche remembered that kind monk not knowing his name till in 2018 ,Rinpoche found out his name Gelong Tamdrin. Rinpoche’s student were at Kathmandu and were granted an audience with Gelong Tamdrin during which Rinpoche was able to reconnect and make offerings to him. Such a beautiful moments . Looking at those beautiful pictures tell all.

Thank you for raising awareness of how empty one’s life can be without Dharma.Dharma is said to teach us how to live our lives, how to integrate our minds and how to keep our everyday live peaceful and healthy.
No Dharma practice is without obstacles and its a rough road to ride. But if you can overcome it. You will get the good results.

Thank you Pastor Jean Ai for this heart felt article which tells us the other side of our lama Tsem Rinpoche. Rinpoche caring, loving and compassionate relationship with some of the close students will be remembered a long long time. I have heard beautiful stories of Rinpoche spending great moments together with them. Rinpoche hugged , loved , joked , scolded, teased , giving teachings in Dharma to name a few. At times tough too , sitting on the same table with Rinpoche. I could imagined that situation.
I am fortunate to have met Rinpoche last July with my friends unexpectedly, first at the Gyzene Chapel and later in the audience room. For me meeting Rinpoche for the very first time had me speechless, cold sweat but feeling blessed, and happiness. Words cannot describe how happy I am ,to meet a living Buddha. Meeting Rinpoche has changed my life and many of us in the group that met Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s compassion , caring, loving and for most his teachings had inspired me. I am deeply grateful for all the profound teachings, and many more to go from the blog.
Rinpoche’s life would have been very, VERY different…..agree with Pastor. During Rinpoche’s parinirvana the many monks came all the way from across the globe has showed us Rinpoche was a special Lama and well known by many . May Rinpoche have a swift return , all of us are looking forward to meet you again.

Very touching article, at the age of learning to understand things and happily play around, the poor little girl has lost her legs in an accident. The tragedy tremendously changes the faith of the girl. I felt very sad to see the photos of the little girls moving around with an old basketball and the wooden pads.

Life would have been very challenging and though for their parents to lift the little girl up. What puzzled me was her attitude, she didn’t see fear and obstacles in her disability, she was brave, strong all the way irony of life to face of great adversity and became successful athlete. I believe God was with her, push her to the right path to achieve her goals and to bring her happiness throughout her life.

Thank you for the great inspiring sharing. However we cannot avoid the unexpected events in our lives because it is these events that challenge our complacency in life.

Thank you very much for the good article. From this, I feel that the devotion, respect and faith will arise spontaneously and effortlessly. We must learn to see the good qualities of other, even though we may have received only harms.
The story about calling the adoptive mother is a very good example of how by having guru devotion, following the guru’s instruction we are able to get ourselves out of suffering and become a better person.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
